The oxidation kinetics of UCu5 in carbon dioxide have been studied over the temperature range 350° to 850°C. At any one temperature, two successive parabolic rate constants are obtained. Up to 650°C, the temperature dependence of the reaction is snzall and the first parabolic rate constant is higher than the second. At temperatures of 690°C and above, there is a very marked temperature dependence and the second rate constant is the higher. Metallo-graphic examination has shown that attack proceeds via internal oxidation. THE oxidation behavior of the U-Cu intermetallic compound, UCu5, in carbon dioxide was briefly examined during investigations aimed at selecting oxidation-resistant uranium-alloy coatings.' It was found that an extremely thick, coherent scale was formed coated at the scale-gas interface with a thin, apparently continuous layer of copper. A more detailed investigation of the oxidation of UCus has now been made. Previous published work2 has been limited to a brief examination of UCu5 in connection with the oxidation of a U-1 wt pct Cu alloy in carbon dioxide. No attempt was made to explain its behavior, but the work indicated that attack proceeded by intern oxidation, with the formation of a layer of copper on the surface of the specimen. The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed an alkaline oxidative pretreatment leaching procedure to increase the recovery of gold from arsenopyrite (FeAsS) ores. The best solution compositions for arsenopyrite dissolution were determined using cyclic voltammetry and chronocoulometry. Initial arsenopyrite dissolution occurred at -0.20 V versus standard hydrogen electrode (SHE) in a sodium hydroxide (Na0H) solution. Leaching of a high-grade arsenopyritic ore containing, in percent, 28.2 As, 25.3 Fe, 19.9 total S, and 1.0 Sb and, in troy ounces per short ton, 1.6 Au and 5.5 Ag resulted in >90 pct As extraction at 1000 C, 40 psig O2,4 h, and 2M NaOH solution in a 2-L autoclave. Cyanidation of the leach residues resulted in 90 to 93 pct Au and 60 to 80 pct Ag extractions, compared with only 5 and 15 pct, respectively, without the pretreatment. The procedure was further tested by leaching a low-grade gold ore and a bulk sulfide flotation concentrate prepared from it. Cyanidation of the leach residues resulted in 70 pct Au and 31 pct Ag extraction. The NaOH leachate was partially regenerated by precipitating the arsenate as calcium arsenate [Ca3As04)2] and the sulfate as barium sulfate (BaS04).

The Federal Bureau of Mines conducted research to develop methods of removing phosphorus from the earthy, calcareous hematite ores of the Birmingham, Ala., iron district while simultaneously improving the grade and recovery of the iron values prior to furnacing. An attempt was also made to identify the phosphorus minerals present in the ores. The ores contained about 36 percent iron, 12 to 16 percent CaO, 15 to 20 percent hydrochloric acid insolubles, and 0.30 to 0.36 percent phosphorus. Fractions containing 5 to 15 percent phosphorus were isolated from the ores. Collophanite, Ca3P2O3?nH2O, a member of the apatite group, was the only phosphate mineral identified. Beneficiation methods using flotation and reduction roasting with magnetic separation yielded good grade iron concentrates, but were not as effective for reducing the phosphorus content of concentrates. Reduction roasting followed by fine grinding, magnetic separation, and acid leaching gave iron concentrates containing 62.5 percent iron and 0.04 percent phosphorus with an iron recovery of 82.9 percent and a phosphorus rejection of 93.7 percent. Reoxidation of reduced magnetic concentrates followed by acid treatment gave iron concentrates containing 58.1 percent iron and 0.02 percent phosphorus with 89.6 percent recovery of the iron and 96.5 percent rejection of the phosphorus.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the Pittsburgh and Upper Freeport coalbeds in Hancock , Brooke , Ohio , and Marshall Counties , W. Va . Over 4.5 million tons of coal was produced in these four counties in 1962. Most of this production came from the Pittsburgh coalbed . Twelve coal samples were collected for this study , 11 from the Pittsburgh bed and 1 from the Lower Freeport bed . Two of these samples could be upgraded to produce metallurgical - grade coal . The sulfur content of the Pittsburgh- bed coals was generally excessive --as high as 4.9 percent in the raw coal and 3.19 percent in the float 1.30 specific gravity fraction . The rank of the coals in this area ranges from high-volatile A to high-volatile B bituminous .

"The effects of pH value and dissolved oxygen(DO) in the pulp to the Eh and flotation recovery of pyrite were investigated using potential online detection system. The effects of DO on the Eh and flotation recovery were tested which DO changed from 0.5mg/L to 19.5mg/L in six different pH buffer flotation systems (pH: 4.00, 5.62, 6.86, 9.18, 10.01 and 10.96 respectively). Results of potential detected online demonstrated that the pyrite electrode has nearly the same response to potential as with platinum electrode for the FeS2-xanthate-H2O flotation system under the study conditions. Pulp potential and recovery of pyrite were remarkably influenced by pH, both of them decreased with the increasing of pH and, especially, sharp decreased after pH above 9. As the concentration of DO was increased, the Eh was also increased in all the six different buffer solution, while the flotation recovery was decreased. And the amplitude of variation for Eh was not obvious in acidic and neutral solutions, but on the contrary, the change for flotation recovery was remarkable in neutral and alkaline conditions. This may indicate that the flotation of pyrite will be deteriorated in alkaline and high DO concentration conditions."

An attempt was made to extract niobium oxide from ~98.5% Nb2O5 using solvent extraction processes. Nb2O5 is used as the feed material in carbothermic reduction processes aimed at producing high-homogeneity, super-conductor-grade niobium on a laboratory scale. The Nb metal used for superconductor applications requires a residual resistivity ratio (RRR) > 300, which in turn needs a stringent purity of Nb and allows impurities (substitutional and interstitial) in ppm levels only. In this paper, solvent extraction of niobium was studied under various experimental conditions, such as effect of different extractants, concentration of methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) in the organic phase and concentration of various acids. The concentrate was digested with hydrofluoric acid, with ammonium fluoride (NH4F) as a stripping agent. The extraction of niobium from low hydrofluoric- (HF-) bearing solution was found to be low. Thus, various concentrations of hydrofluoric acid and sulfuric acid, as well as hydrofluoric acid and hydrochloric acid, were investigated towards obtaining a maximum amount of niobium in the filtrate and a minimum amount of niobium in the residue. A McCabe - Thiele plot for extraction of niobium from the aqueous phase, HF-bearing solution using HCl with 85% MIBK in kerosene has been constructed to determine the O:A ratio and the number of stages of the process.

Ecuador's economy continued to slow in 1982 due, in part, to declining foreign demand for oil, depressed world oil prices, and high international interest rates. Real growth of the gross domestic product (GDP) was estimated to be in the 2% to 3% range, down from the revised 4.3% recorded in 1981 and the 4.5% anticipated officially. In current prices, the GDP in 1982 was estimated at $12.1 billion.2 Inflation abated slightly from that of 1981 to an estimated 13.9% annual rate. The sucre was devalued in May by 32%, the first time in more than a decade, as a result of the pervasive flow of capital abroad. Ecuador's production of petroleum increased an estimated 1.9% in 1982 compared with that of 1981. The consortium of Corporación Estatal Petrolera Ecuatoriana (CEPE), the state oil company holding a 62.5% interest, and Texaco Inc. (37.5%) produced an estimated 98%, or approximately 211,000 barrels per day, of the total from the northern part of El Oriente, the eastern jungle region, where a Texaco-Gulf Oil Corp. partnership discovered oil in 1967. Gulf subsequently sold out to CEPE in 1977 for $117 million, Remaining production was from the Santa Elena Peninsula Fields on the Pacific coast where production has been steadily declining for several years.

A new process for extracting cadmium from the electric precipitated dust produced by ISP process was studied. A leaching rate of 89.1% of cadmium was attained by leaching the dust with NH3?H2O-(NH4)2SO4 system under the best leaching conditions: ratio of liquid to solid(l:s)=2.5, c(NH3):c(NH4+)=3:5, total concentration of ammonium and ammonia=8 mol?L-1, leaching time= 1.5h, temperature=35. The most troublesome impurity of lead could be deposited from the leached out solution automatically after put it static more than 15h when the total concentration of zinc and cadmium was up to 45gL-1 , and the final concentration of lead was 0.0047 gL-1, which meant 99% of it was removed. Metallic cadmium which contained cadmium more than 99% was prepared by electrowinning under the conditions: current density=750Am-2, total concentration of Cd2+ and Zn2+>25gL-1. The current efficiency was about 87% and the energy consumption for every ton of cadmium was about 548KWht-1. Main impurities of the metallic cadmium were copper and zinc and all of they could be got rid of in the following pyrometallurgical refining step.

Sewage presently being discharged into the Tijuana River Valley pollutes the valley as well as the beaches in the South Bay of San Diego, making the beaches unusable nearly year round. The SBTO will convey flows down a 8.5 m (28 ft.) by 58 m (190 ft.) deep drop shaft, through a 3.35 m (11 ft.) by 5.8 km (3.6 mile) long tunnel, and up a 46 m by 2.7 m (150 ft. by 9 ft.) riser shaft connecting to a 1.5 km (0.95 mile) of seafloor pipeline and 1.2 km (0.76 mile) of diffusers on the ocean floor. The drop shaft will be sunk through 38 m (125 ft.) of saturated sands and gravels and 20 m (65 ft.) into the dense fine sands of the San Diego Formation. The tunnel liner has been designed as a five piece, single pass, gasketed, bolted, reinforced concrete liner designed to withstand an external head of 76 m (250 ft.) of water and internal operating head of up to 27 m (89 ft.) and to accommodate movement at the numerous fault crossings. The tunnel is contemplated to be driven with a state-of-the-art Earth Pressure Balance Machine (EPBM) or slurry shield machine through a wide range of conditions from clay to gravel with boulders.

The chlorine leach of the anode slime was studied in order to improve the treatment process at the Niihama Nickel Refinery. The anode slime originates from the nickel matte electrorefining and, contains 3-5% of nickel as sulfides. A comparative study has been conducted on the filter cake resulting from the sulfur filtration of the molten anode slime. The kinetic factors of the chlorine leach such as temperature, grain size were defined. Under the optimized condition, 70-80% of the nickel is recovered from the slime or filter cake. On the basis of these results, the chlorine leach process for the treatment of anode slime has been established. The leaching plant has been installed and successfully operated since 1986.

A great deal is known, in a qualitative sense, about the performance of CMI EB-36 centrifuges. The manufacturer can give reliable guidance for the proper operation of its centrifuges and can give general estimates of expected product moisture and recovery. Quantitative estimates of the effects of changes in the various operating parameters are more difficult to find. The engineer faced with designing a preparation plant may be without the specific data needed to make decisions. For example, to obtain optimum product moisture when drying 9.5 mm X 595 µm (0.4 in. x 28 mesh) coal the centrifuge manufacturer recommends having no more than 5% -595 µm (-28 mesh) material in the centrifuge feed. They know that more -595 µm (-28 mesh)material in the feed will cause higher product moistures, but they usually cannot quantify the increased moisture or describe the shape of the product moisture versus -595 µm (-28 mesh) in the feed curve. This study was conceived to provide quantitative information on the EB-36 centrifuges, focusing on product moisture, recovery, and size degradation. All of the centrifuges tested were Model EB-36 dryers from Centrifugal and Mechanical Industries Inc. (CMI), with feeds in the nominal 9.5 mm x 595 pm (0.4 in. x 28 mesh) range. These are typical centrifugal dryers in this application, and many were available for testing.

Aços Inoxidáveis Supermartensíticos surgiram na indústria petroquímica como um material alternativo para confecção de dutos, devido principalmente ao sinergismo de suas propriedades mecânicas e de corrosão. Com esta nova demanda, tornou-se necessária a caracterização deste material em suas diversas propriedades, destacando-se neste trabalho o efeito da microestrutura na resistência à corrosão. Objetivou-se, portanto, o estudo da resistência à corrosão por pite de um aço inoxidável supermartensítico 13Cr-5Ni-2Mo-Nb em função da fração volumétrica de ferrita-delta (d) presente na microestrutura. A variação da ferrita-delta foi alcançada através de tratamentos de recozimento, a 1.050°C, durante diferentes tempos (de 0,5h a 48h). As amostras foram submetidas a ensaios de polarização potenciodinâmica em eletrólito contendo 3,5% NaCl, naturalmente aerado. Quantificou-se, ainda, a porcentagem de ferrita em cada uma das condições através de ataque eletrolítico com solução 20% NaOH. Os resultados obtidos evidenciaram a diminuição desta fase com o aumento do tempo de recozimento, chegando praticamente à sua eliminação com tratamento de 48h. Paralelamente, a resistência à corrosão por pite deste aço foi melhorada de modo proporcional à diminuição da fase ferrita, resultando em um aumento de aproximadamente 115 mV da pior para a melhor condição, comprovando que, de fato, a presença de ferrita-delta prejudica as propriedades de resistência à corrosão localizada.

BERYLLIUM, magnesium, zinc and cadmium, together with mercury, constitute a coherent sub-group of the periodic system and these metals, excepting mercury; have been studied in sufficient detail by the new X-ray diffraction methods to prove their common adherence to the hexagonal close-packed type of crystal structure with a progressive increase in axial ratio as we pass through the group from beryllium to cadmium. The first four columns of Table 1 summarize the data on crystal structure of these metals reported in the International Critical Tables.1 The last two columns are based on results obtained in the present investigation. The period from 2009 to 2012 has witnessed a large rise in the number of blast-generated fume events in Eastern Australia, where highly visible oxides of nitrogen (NOx) are produced from coal mine blasting. Fume production mechanisms have been poorly understood by mine operators, and practical measures to reduce fume were initially elusive. Over time, data on fume events has been collected and analysis has pointed to a range of contributing factors associated with fume production.

In this study, in order to achieve ultra-high strength without reducing plasticity, a novel heat treatment involving a pre-quenching process prior to conventional intercritical annealing (P-IDP) was proposed in a low carbon low alloy DP steel. It revealed that abundant fraction of banded structure was observed after conventional intercritical heat treatment (IDP) due to the inheritance of cold rolling deformation. However, the banded structure in novel heat treatment was eliminated significantly, whilst the refined microstructure was relatively more homogeneous with ultrafine ferrite grains. Moreover, obvious chain-networked martensite grains along the ferrite grain boundaries were obtained. The optimum mechanical properties with ultimate strength of 1238 MPa, total elongation of 17%, product of strength and elongation (PSE) of 21GPa% were obtained by P-IDP treatment, which was much higher than the values reported with similar composition. As to pre-quenching treatment, all of grain refinement, homogeneous distribution of martensite islands and precipitated strengthening of microalloyed carbides were beneficial to improve the final strength and ductility.

Early in February, 1905, a list of species and varieties of iron and steel, with definitions, drawn by the Chairman and Secretary of Committee 24, was sent to every member of this Committee with a request for comments and suggestions. This present report, which is based upon our original list and definitions, and upon the replies to these requests, consists of four parts I. A polyglot, which gives the names of the chief classes of iron and steel in English, French, German, Swedish, Danish and Dutch. We .regret that we have failed to get the Italian and Spanish names. II. English definitions of principal classes of iron and steel. III. A glossary of special sizes and shapes of iron and steel. IV. A note on the boundary between steel and cast-iron. I. The West Lynn Canal subarea of the Juneau Mining District (JMD) is defined by Lynn Canal on the east, Davidson Glacier to the north, Icy Strait to the south and the Glacier Bay National Park Boundary to the west (figs. C-l and C-2). This area extends along the main-land west of Juneau (across Lynn Canal) northerly, to approximately 20 miles south of the city of Haines. The only roads in the area are relatively new logging roads at the southern end constructed to support a U.S. Forest Service timber sale. There is also local road access near the community of Excursion Inlet. Access to the remainder of the region is either by boat, aircraft, or 'foot. Helicopters provide the only time effective access to all but the coastal parts of the West Lynn Canal subarea. Coastal areas may be reached by small boat or float aircraft. There is an unimproved dirt airstrip just north of the mouth of the Endicott River. This airstrip is suitable for use by light aircraft. The subarea lies within the Tongass National Forest and is managed by the Department of Agriculture, U.S. Forest Service. Approximately two-thirds of the forest lands are open to mineral entry under the current Tongass Land Management plan. The remaining forest lands comprise the Endicott River Wilderness area, which is closed to mineral entry. Private lands within the study area are sparse, with scattered homestead tracts along the coastal regions and in the Excursion Inlet area. Sealaska (Southeast Alaska Regional Native Corporation) also has land selections in the southern Chilkat Range. Tidal and submerged lands are owned by the State of Alaska.

STRETCHING from New York southwestwardly to Georgia is a great range of hills and mountains consisting of pre-Palaeozic schists, slates, and gneissic and granitoid rocks, known locally by many different names; in Pennsylvaniaa as the South mountains, the Berkshire or Durham and Reading hills, and in Virginia and farther south as the Blue ridge. To the northwest of this range lies the " Great Valley," underlain by Lower Silurian limestones, and known as the Lehigh valley, Cumberland valley, Shenandoah valley, valley of Eastern Tennessee and Georgia and by other local names, but all these are parts of one valley, geologically and geographically continuous from New Jersey to Georgia. Lying upon and along the northern flank of this range of mountains, and dipping northwestwardly under the limestone of the valley, is the Potsdam formation (Primal or No. 1 of the Pennsylvania Geological Survey), which consists of sandstone or conglomerate overlain by slates. The latter are sometimes arenaceous and occasionally are replaced in part by sandstone. This formation varies from a few feet to several hundred feet in thickness. At the outcrop the slates are completely decomposed, oxidized or disintegrated, forming a belt of clay several hundred feet wide occupying the interval between the outcroppings of the sandstone and limestone. This clay-belt includes a more or less continuous series of iron-ore (brown hematite) deposits, which have been, and still are, extensively worked. The belt is more or less continuously mineralized with iron throughout its length, and hundreds of large deposits of ore have been developed and worked, producing many millions of tons of ore.
