Codelco, a multi-process primary copper producer, is undertaking a full life cycle inventory (LCI) of all its commercial products based on copper and molybdenum. During this work, many questions have surfaced regarding the contribution of process unit design to specific aspects of a product's LCI and, more importantly, how such designs could be improved using a life cycle perspective. Management strategy efforts were undertaken to improve the LCI footprint, however it was found that the corrective actions were almost impossible to apply at the operation level in plant, given the ongoing timing pressures of extractive mining, and costs saving priorities. Additionally, it was found that most of the important comparative differences between operations had structural reasons. In this circumstance, the LCI practitioner group from 1M2, and the environmental managers from Codelco, decided to shift its efforts to place the critical LC1 aspects to the design process of future developments. Hatch Associates has developed unique tools in their Sustainable Plant Design (SPD) package that compliment and enhance LCA methods; these effectively drive sustainability into the heart of the design process. By using LCA and SPD in a project design phase, you cannot only address potential hotspots, but also decide on materials, location and size of certain facilities to optimize for energy efficiency. Moreover, you can avoid the shifting of environmental burdens upstream or downstream within the plant and finally it is extremely useful in identifying opportunities for greenhouse gas reduction.

Although doubt has been expressed many times as to who first brought self-contained breathing apparatus to this side of the Atlantic, there is none whatever that the first organized station was established at Glace Bay, N .S., by the Dominion Coal Company, in 1907. This station was started with 20 sets of 1907 "Draeger" apparatus and all necessary station equipment and supplies. After the fire at No. 1 pit, Sydney Mines, in 1908, the Nova Scotia Steel Company installed 15 sets of "Draeger" and sup-plies, which were housed in a rescue car (a converted pull-man.) In 1909 or '10 a fire occurred at the Back Pit, Stellarton, where the apparatus from Glace Bay was used, and subsequently the Acadia Company erected a station and in-stalled 10 sets of "Securitas" apparatus. In 1912 the station at New Waterford was opened and equipped with "Draeger," and the same year the station at Springhill was built and equipped with the same type. Sometime during past years the Nova Scotia Steel Company acquired a couple of "Proto" machines, and after the explosion at the Allan shaft in 1918 the Acadia Coal Company added some "Gibbs" to their station. From this it will be seen that when the coal-fields were organized under the British Empire Steel Corporation the equipment was rather mixed, therefore steps were taken by the executive to stanardize the whole of the rescue and recovery work.

The various factors considered in recommending the initiation of a gas injection project in the southern portion of the Cedar Lake Field are discussed. Performance history under gas injection operations is reviewed and these data are analyzed, utilizing both the material balance method and the fractional flow and frontal advance expressions. Results of the analysis of the performance data indicate that the injected gas has contacted and affected at least 60 per cent of the reservoir and a substantial increase in ultimate recovery can reasonably be expected. By holding the reservoir pressure appreciably above the bubble point, the well productive capacities have been maintained substantially above the level predicted for primary operations. The analysis of the Cedar Lake project suggests that in certain limestone reservoirs, at least, the probable success of gas injection cannot be predicted simply from ohservation of permeability distribution throughout the pay section, as indicated by core analysis data, on either one or a number of wells. Further, the performance of this particular project fails to indicate any basis for classifying carbonate reservoirs in general as being inherently unsuited to a dispersed type gas injection program, thus indicating that each reservoir should be considered on its own merits, regardless of the composition of the reservoir rock. As a result of these investigations, the decision was made to initiate a gas injection program of sufficient intensity to maintain reservoir pressure at approximately 600 psia, or some 274 lb above the bubble point pressure of 326 psia. A full scale dispersed type gas injection program has been in operation on leases of the Stanolind Oil and Gas Co. in the southern portion of the field for nearly five years, and sufficient performance data are now available to evaluate the benefits which have been derived from this project. It is the primary purpose of this paper to analyze the performance data for the Cedar Lake gas injection project and to point out the significance of the ohserved behavior with respect to certain hypotheses which have been advanced in recent years concerning the probable success of gas injection projects in limestone reservoirs. This paper properly should be regarded more on the order of a progress report, inasmuch as some revision in interpretation will undoubtedly be required from time to time as additional performance data are obtained, although the satisfactory performance of the project to date leaves little doubt as to the ultimate success of gas injection in the Cedar Lake Field. As a result of the success of the project to date, a unit was formed in the southern part of the field, effective March 1, 1951, for the purpose of continuation of the gas injection program. Participants in this unit are the Mid-Continent Petroleum Co. and Stanolind Oil and Gas Co. GEOLOGY AND STRATIGRAPHY The Cedar Lake Field is located in the northern portion of the Midland Basin area as shown in Fig. 1. The southwest portion of the field lies within a playa, or dry salt lake, which covers an area of approximately eight square miles. As might be expected, it was this lake which furnished the inspiration for the name of the field. Except for its value as a salt water disposal pit, this lake has succeeded only in magnifying the difficulties in developing this portion of the field. Typical of this section of West Texas, the area in general is relatively flat and has a semi-arid climate. The localized structure which favored the accumulation of oil is an anticline with approximately 100 ft of closure. The major axis of the structure extends in a general southeast-northwest direction. Originally this structure was defined by seismograph data, which have been subsequently confirmed by development. In general, the geologic column is typical of that found throughout the basin. From the surface to depth of approximately 1,800 ft, surface sands and undifferentiated red beds. probably Triassic. are encountered. Below this point to the producing horizon, all formations are of the Permian age.

Experiments resulted in a satisfactory laboratory method for restoring permeability to clay-containing cores damaged by fresh water. Clay contents of a number of field cores were measured, and permeabilities of plugs from these same cores were then deliberately reduced with fresh water. This damage is attributed to swollen and dispersed clays occupying the pore space. After damaging, a number of experiments were performed to meaJure the amount of damage and to establish some means by which permeability could be restored. The experiments included flooding the damaged cores with water-miscible fluids such as salt water, acetone, isopropyl alcohol and ethanol. Permeability was not successfully restored in these experiments. However, part of the damage was repaired by flooding with oil; when water was removed by distillation in the presence of immiscible fluids such as air or toluene, permeability was completely restored. This evidence suggested that swollen and dispersed clays could be collapsed to their original volume by strong interfacial and capillary forces. It was further postulated that the required forces could be generated by flooding the damaged cores with a solvent partially miscible with water. The flooding experiments were repeated using n-hex-an01 as the partially miscible solvent. Permeability was restored to five of six damaged cores and substantially increased in the sixth. A large fraction of the restored permeability was retained even after water saturation was raised to its original value with 12 per cent salt water. INTRODUCTION Sharp reductions in permeability often occur when relatively fresh water contacts clay-containing formations during drilling and workover operations. These permeability losses are caused by removing inorganic ions from the environment surrounding the clay, and consequent swelling and/or dispersion of clay minerals into the available pore space.' This phenomenon is generally termed clay damage, fresh-water damage, or simply formation damage; it causes large losses in current revenue by preventing oil wells from making their allowable production. Attempts to repair the damage and restore permeability by flowing salt water solutions or brines through clay-damaged cores containing montmorillonite have been unsuccessful.' This irreversibility is thought to result from formation of brush-heap, or edge-to-face, structures when the dispersed clay is flocculated. The brush-heap structures occupy much more space than the close packed domains present before damage.' One solution of the problem is to destroy the clay-water brush-heap and thus restore permeability. Because no satisfactory method existed for restoring permeability to clay-containing formations damaged by fresh water, the work described in this paper was under taken. The laboratory experiments generally consisted of deliberately damaging fresh cores containing clay and then attempting to repair this damage by various means. Results indicate that generating strong interfacial forces within the pore space of damaged cores collapses the clay brush-heap and restores permeability. These forces are most conveniently generated by flowing partially water-miscible solvents, such as n-hexanol, through a core. THEORY OF THE DAMAGE PROCESS The most common clay mineral groups known to cause permeability damage to formations are the mont-morillonites, kaolins, chlorites and illites. These clays are constructed of particles which can adsorb water on their surfaces and edges and, in the case of montmorillonite, between layers of the basic particle itself. This adsorption increases as water salinity decreases. At low salinities the particles disperse into the aqueous phase. When the clays present in the formation are kaolin, chlorite and illite, dispersion accounts completely for permeability damage to porous media. However, unlike the other clays, montmorillonite particles can imbibe water and adsorb ions between layers of sub-particles, or platelets. These platelets have net negative charges on their faces and are held together by exchangeable (or removable) cations such as Na and Ca decrease in ion concentration (salinity) in the fluid surrounding a particle causes migration of water into the clay layers and disperses the basic particle, while diffusion removes the original exchangeable ions from between the platelets. Once these ions are removed, the facing negative platelets repel each other, causing the montmorillonite to swell until, for all practical purposes, the individual platelets are dispersed. For this reason, fresh-water* damage is much more severe in sands containing montmorillonite than it is in sands containing other clays. Many investigators have shown that even trace amounts of montmorillonite can be responsible for marked reduction in the permeability of reservoir sands in the presence of fresh water." ." The Methane Control and the Respirable Dust Groups at the Twin Cities Mining Research Center (TCMRC) cooperated recently in obtaining production samples of approximately 1 ton each, from the loading conveyors of a ripper, a borer, and a loading machine in conventional development headings. These samples were sized, in four stages, from plus 4 in to minus 10 µm. The conventional product had the least fines of the three production methods. The borer product had more fines than did the ripper product, but it also had a greater amount of large pieces. All three products, as sampled, had essentially the same amount of minus 10-µm particles. Photomicrographs and surface?-area comparisons were made. Gas -adsorption, surface-area determinations on particles under 37 µm give essentially the same value. Surface-area calculations, assuming spherical particles and no porosity, give a smaller area to the conventional product.

Since 1985, the Sunshine Mining Company has used a patented nitric-sulfuric acid pressure leaching system for production of silver and copper from a refractory sulfide ore body. To better understand this novel process, a program of lab scale testing was undertaken to quantify the effect of system variables on silver recovery. Some of the factors studied include temperature, agitation, acidity, vessel pressure, particle size, percent solids and oxidizer amount. In turn, this knowledge will be applied in actual plant practice to upgrade reaction time, increase concentrate throughput, raise silver recovery and lower reagent costs. A discussion of plant process changes resulting from lab scale testing is included.

Around 90% of the chromite resources of India are concentrated in the Boula-Nuasahi Sukinda belt of Orissa state. In order to conserve these valuable ore resources strategically, several companies established chrome ore beneficiation plants in this region. The general beneficiation process in these plants consists of gravity unit operations such as Floatex density separator, spiral, wet shaking table etc. Most of these gravity circuits suffer huge losses of valuable minerals in the tailing. Any attempt towards decreasing these losses would not only increase the limited reserves in India but also make the economics of the operations more attractive. Apart from the liberation phenomena, in many of the operating plants considerable quantity of values are lost in the tailings, due to inconsistent feed quality, inappropriate selection of operating and design parameters. Mineral engineers in this regard have to play a proactive and continuous role to improve the performance of all separating units by modifying even small changes based on tests conducted in laboratory under controlled conditions followed by attempts to make necessary changes in the plant. For such improvements, accurate data collection and proper data interpretation followed by making necessary change which is implementable in an operating plant play a very critical role in performance of the circuit. Databank collected over a period of time under various conditions would also help in overcoming the future problems related to either variation in the feed characteristics or specific demand by metallurgical industries. The above concept was adopted in one of the operating chromite beneficiation plant at Sukinda. The approach adopted and practical problems encountered during the study were reported in this paper. The result of trial campaign has shown that, an overall product assaying 30.2% Cr2O3 from the feed (18% Cr2O3 ) can be produced to in single stage. "The stadium development consists of construction of a 68,500-seat, open-air NFL football stadium for the San Francisco 49ers. The main structure will consist of a 7-story above grade steel structure supported by over 3,000 piles. Berkel and Company Contractors, Inc. (Berkel) was selected as the design-build pile contractor who used their auger pressure grouted displacement (APGD) piles for this project. During an indicator pile installation and pile load test program, fifteen piles were tested to develop installation criteria to support demands of 150kips tension and 180 kips compression. Following the indicator pile program Berkel installed 3088 piles in 30 working days. Throughout pile installation data were collected with an automated data acquisition system (DAS). During pile installation field engineers from Treadwell & Rollo observed the pile installation as well as the real-time data from the DAS. Strategic staging and pre-production planning by Berkel along with consistent collaboration with the design team created an atmosphere for a successful and on schedule project completion.IntroductionThe new San Francisco 49ers Stadium in Santa Clara, California will be a 68,500-seat facility, a rendering of which is shown in Figure 1. The main structure will consist of a 7-story above grade steel structure supported by more than 3,000 piles. The north, east and south portions of the stadium are designed as an open seating bowl, while the western portion includes open seating at the lower levels and seven-story tower which houses over 150 suites.The stadium project includes the stadium structure, as well as elevated open pedestrian walkways, commercial community space, and three new pedestrian bridges spanning a nearby by creek. Sustainable designs and innovations such as a green roof, photovoltaic panels, a ground source geothermal system, stadium-wide Wi-Fi capability, and access to public transit are provided throughout the project. The stadium is designed as an open, light, and airy structure and is surrounded by an existing amusement park, office buildings, the Santa Clara Convention Center, and the training facility of the 49ers."

Rock cutting includes many unknown parameters which result in different consequences of the different cutting conditions. However, based on the current suggested models for rock cutting, there are some critical parameters that control the fracture initiation and propagation in the rock domain. In general, there are two major cutting tools are used in rock cutting: drag bits and indenters. Different mechanical attacks of cutters result in different fracture models. For example drag bits break the rock parallel to the rock surface, which is called ‘undercutting’ while indenters cut rocks by pressing normal to the rock surface. Both tools cause rock failure by inducing tensile cracks in the rock. However, drag bits induce more tensile cracks compared with the indenters. The full benefits of improvement in rock cutting efficiency will arise from a clear understanding of rock fracture mechanics principles. Therefore, fracture mechanics principles will be applied to the rock cutting as the rock fragmentation process is based on the rock fracturing. The Oscillating Disc Cutting (ODC) has more advantages than drag bits and disc cutters. The forces transmitted back through the cutting head are much lower with ODC. Although ODC attacks rock in much the same way as drag bits, a combination of the oscillating action of the cutter and the undercutting mode produces the lower cutting forces and causes rock fatigue. Fatigue phenomenon in rock has advantages for the rock breaking by applying less effort and energy due to the cyclic loading. The aim of this study is using the Extended Finite Elements Analyses (XEFM) numerical modelling for simulating the ODC cutting with different cyclic loading conditions. An accurate prediction of numerical investigation requires detail laboratory experiments. A series of laboratory tests were performed to obtain the fracture toughness values of our Monsonite rock samples under various cyclic amplitude and frequency values. The numerical results showed different types fatigue damage mechanisms due to the various cyclic loading conditions. Thus, modelling and understanding the crack propagation behaviour depending on different amplitude and frequencies are believed very important for the dynamic rock cutting researches and rock cutting machine manufacturers.

The 1.1 Ga Midcontinent rift of North America has many similarities to the geology of the Voisey's Bay region in Labrador and the geology of the Noril'sk region in Siberia. These similarities include the hosting of large volumes of sulfur- undersaturated and trace-element-enriched basalt, having igneous centers characterized by crustal contamination, being characterized by metal depletions in some mafic units (an indication of prior sulfide segregation) and having known occurrences of Ni-Cu sulfide mineralization. These similarities along with new geophysical data and refined models for Ni-Cu sulfide deposits suggest that the Midcontinent rift probably contains undiscovered Cu-Ni [±] PGE sulfide deposits, some of which could be the size and grade of a Voisey's Bay or Noril'sk deposit. In particular, intrusions and related feeder systems that occur in northern Michigan and Wisconsin, as well as to the southwest along the rift margin, deserve serious examination.

The enthalpy of immersion is the heat change arising from the replacement of the solid-gas interface with the solid-liquid interface when a solid surface is immersed in a liquid. Although immersion calorimetry has been established as a valuable and reliable means of determining solid surface properties such as wettability, it has seldom been applied in mineral processing research. In this study, precision solution calorimetry was employed to measure the enthalpies of immersion of different minerals in water. The enthalpies of immersion were then related to the first-order flotation rate constant as determined by the microflotation technique. The same measurements were also made on sulphide minerals whose surfaces were modified to different degrees of hydrophobicity using different percentage coverages of amyl xanthate collector. The enthalpy of immersion technique was capable of distinguishing and ranking minerals according to their wettability. All mineral types and collector-treated minerals conformed to the same relationship that was found between the enthalpy of immersion and the flotation rate constant. This conformed, empirically, to a power law equation. As the enthalpy of immersion decreased, there were large increases in flotation response for very small changes in hydrophobicity. In addition, a critical enthalpy of immersion (CEI) was found, above which no flotation could occur. The scatter in the data points could be corrected for by adjusting the rate constant using the density of the minerals to produce a robust relationship between the rate constant and enthalpy of immersion. These results have shown that the enthalpy of immersion is able to indicate both the natural mineral hydrophobicity and the extent to which collectors can render a mineral hydrophobic. This technique has considerable potential to be used as a sensitive and accurate measure of mineral surface wettability in order to predict flotation performance.

Neste trabalho propõe-se o estudo do efeito do processo de SHTPN (Tratamento térmico de solubilização após nitretação por plasma), e do tratamento térmico de têmpera e revenido sobre a microestrutura, dureza e resistência à corrosão do aço inoxidável ferrítico AISI 409. Por meio do SHTPN obteve-se uma camada martensítica de nitrogênio na superfície do aço. Após o SHTPN as amostras foram temperadas de 950°C e revenidas nas temperaturas de 200, 400 e 600°C. A resistência à corrosão foi avaliada por meio da técnica de polarização cíclica e a dureza através de ensaios Vickers. Verificou-se que o SHTPN afetou significativamente a dureza do aço e o tratamento de têmpera refinou e melhorou a distribuição da martensita de nitrogênio. A camada martensítica formada apresentou espessura da ordem de 660 ?m. Os resultados indicam que é possível obter uma camada martensítica com dureza de 620 HV e aumento da região passiva, bem como do potencial de nucleação de pite quando comparado à condição não tratada (ferrítico). O melhor resultado de corrosão foi obtido para a amostra revenida na temperatura de 200°C.

An investigation into different aspects of importance in the understanding of explosibility of hybrid mixtures of coal dust, air and gases potentially found within mine workings through a comprehensive laboratory program of explosibility tests was conducted. Plotting of test results revealed that conditions of potential explosibility could be described using two dimensional flammability limit surfaces- for coal dust/oxygen; methane/oxygen; and coal dust/methane mixtures. From these plots, the three dimensional flammability envelopes defining the explosibility of the coal dust/methane/oxygen mixtures can be defined and illustrated for a coal sample. The surfaces of the three dimensional envelope describe limits which separate inert mixtures of coal dust and methane at varying oxygen levels from those concentrations which are ignitable under defined conditions. It is considered appropriate to generalise that the geometric shapes of these limit regions are applicable to all type classifications of coal dust. There are practical applications of these results to the underground environment.The action of free radical initiators in the propagation of a methane gas explosion was examined for its applicability to the flammability of coal dust/gas/air mixtures. The oxides of nitrogen or NO x radicals have influence upon the lean limits of flammability of hybrid mixtures and this is illustrated by use of three dimensional coordinate geometry. Gases can be introduced to the underground environment through the exhaust gases of diesel equipment. It is concluded that radical species can substantially increase the flammability of gas and dust flames and as a consequence raise risk of mine atmosphere explosibility.

Rock bursts in the deep metal mines of the Coeur d’Alene district present an ever increasing problem in the safe and economic mining of the district’s silver, lead and zinc ores. Hecla Mining Company operates two mines in the district - the Star, a 1100-ton/day lead-zinc mine, and the Lucky Friday, a 750-ton/day silver- lead mine. Rock burst problems at both operations prompted Hecla management to make an all-out attempt to find a practical method of predicting and eventually controlling these bursts. Research by personnel from the Denver Research Center of the Bureau of Mines at ASARCO's Galena Mine indicated that a recognizable pattern of seismic activity preceded some bursts and this activity could be precisely monitored by present- day, off-the-shelf electronic devices. Using information gained by the Bureau and other sources, Hecla designed and installed a 24,- channel seismic monitoring system in the Lucky Friday mine. Installation was completed in December 1973 and after a year of successful operation, it was decided that a similar system would be installed in the Star mine. This second installation was completed in June 1975. Both systems are now operating and providing continuous information on underground seismic activity. Each monitoring system consists of a network of geophones with attendant amplifiers that are connected by shielded cable through an interfacing device to a computer. The origin of each seismic event is determined by the computer and a three-dimensional location is printed out. This information is plotted daily and is used to pinpoint rock burst prone areas and chart their relative seismic activity. This paper will review the causes and effects of rock bursts in the Coeur d'Alene district, the equipment and operation of the microseismic system at the Star and Lucky Friday mines, and the results obtained to date.

Considering the capital outlay, running costs and inherent difficulties of backfilling operations at depth the benefits need to be clearly established, quantified and then exploited. Expansion of Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company towards even deeper, highly faulted ground, and the process of establishing codes of practice for the management of rockfalls and rockbursts, required that a sound support strategy be formulated. This paper describes the derivation of an overall backfilling strategy on Vaal Reefs. Use was made of experience gained over some 12 years with backfilling. Numerical modelling was used to estimate potential benefits of backfilling the deepest mining areas still to be extracted. In exploiting a probably unique opportunity, two contiguous mining areas bounded by the same major geological structures, were compared. One was extensively backfilled and the other not at all. Shaft sinking through a backfilled stope added another dimension to the database.

The effective utilization of resources and process optimization play a crucial role in the sustaining and growth of overall businesses. This principle holds true in the mining sector, where particular attention is required during the comminution steps. This necessity arises from the fact that mining operations often consume substantial amounts of energy in mineral processing. Therefore, it becomes imperative to thoroughly study the integration of comminution steps. In many instances, an approach to be studied is the operation commencing with the drill and blast phase and culminating in the grinding product process. Nevertheless, establishing an optimal integration between drill and blast operations and the grinding phase is a complex undertaking due to the direct influence of rock characteristics on this process. And in many cases, the complexity and variability of such physical characteristics makes mining operations to ignore such influence. Consequently, Enaex Mining Technical Solutions (EMTS), in collaboration with Lundin Mining's Chapada Mine engineering team, and with the assistance of Hatch Consulting and Technology, has undertaken a comprehensive study aimed at enhancing mill throughput at the Chapada operation. The basis of this study lies in characterizing the rock masses present in the Chapada Mine to gain a deep understanding of the material that needs to be comminuted. Subsequently, the mineral processing team determined the most suitable size distribution for the Run-of-Mine (ROM) material. With this information, the drilling and blasting team built a site-specific blast fragmentation model, able to simulate various blast design scenarios. This approach enabled to optimize the utilization of available drilling and blasting resources while striving to achieve the optimum ROM characteristics. Since 2021, the Mine to Mill methodology has been progressively implemented at the Chapada Mine. As a result, the blasting engineering team now utilizes the blast plans generated by the fragmentation model simulations as a foundation for designing blast plans that align with the operational and financial capacities of the mine. Overall, it was predicted that this implementation could lead to an average increase in mill throughput of 13-22 % depending on blend feed, once all recommendations are implemented. Even with partial implementation, plant results demonstrate a 5 % increase compared to the period before the Mineto-Mill project, without any coarsening of the associated grinding product size.

Belt conveyor systems for long-distance haulage are nowadays in a competitive position with conventional methods of transportation such as railways, truck haulage, and also pipelines for solid materials. In a number of cases, the economical use of conveyors is obvious. This is in all those cases where typical features of a conveyor system are showing the outstanding economical position in the very first approach for a certain project. Regarding downhill conveyors, with today's level of belt conveyor techniques nobody would reasonably doubt the justified application of a conveyor system, - as for instance at the Marcona Mining Installation, or at the iron ore mine of Lamco in Liberia.
