The main objective of the experimental study was to investigate the dissolution kinetics of various forms of carbon under iron bath converting or smelting-reduction conditions, i.e., particulate, free moving carbon in contact with a turbulent iron melt. Iron/carbon melts were contained in cast magnesia-lined silicon carbide crucibles heated by a medium frequency induction furnace. The melts were stirred by injecting nitrogen through 2 mm I.D. alumina lances submerged to a depth of 50 mm in the 100 mm deep baths. Particulate carbon in the form of graphite, brown coal char and petroleum coke, were dropped directly onto the turbulent bath. The dissolution rates of the various carbon types were monitored by taking periodic bath samples for subsequent carbon analyses. The effect of carbon particle size (1-6.25 mm), the degree of bath turbulence (nitrogen stirring rates of 0-20 litres/min), and bath temperature (1300-1500¦C) were assessed. The analysis of the results was complicated by particle buoyancy effects, but it was established that the dissolution rates of the three carbon types investigated were similar, and increased linearly with increases in the gas stirring power inputs. Particle size had relatively little effect on the dissolution rates.

The main purpose of this study was to apply the artificial neural network (ANN) models to determine optimal powder factors and predict peak particle velocities, based on a series of observations and input parameters. The used blasthole pattern was V-cut. The locations of blastholes and ignition patterns remained almost constant. The input parameters were 14 geological conditions (i.e., dip, dip direction, spacing, separation, and persistence of 2 discontinuity sets, tunnel orientation, rock strength, RQD, and RMR) and 4 blasting conditions (i.e., distance between blasting points and measuring points, charge weight per delay, drilling length, and blasting efficiency). Data for the ANN application in this study were recently collected in a highway tunnel under construction in Korea. The main rock type in the site was biotitic granite. An optimum ANN model was determined by training models with collected data. The trained model was used to evaluate the prediction capability of the optimum model. It was shown that the ANN model could predict the powder factor and the peak particle velocity depended upon the selected input parameters. Particularly, the ANN model predicted more accurate peak particle velocities than those obtained by the blasting vibration equation. Moreover, the more dominant factors among the input parameters could be determined by analysis of the relative strength effect.

IF you do not make the disc at the same time as the core and as part of it, it is necessary to make it by itself. This is done by spreading on a board or other flat surface a layer of clay as thick and wide as [88] the disc that you made at the feeding head of the first pattern of the gun. When it is dry, mark it exactly with compasses and then, cutting with a chisel or rasp, make it fit exactly into the empty space at the head. Likewise, make a hole just as wide as the thickness of the core exactly in the middle of this clay disc. When you have put the disc in its place in the mould and then pass the core through this hole, it passes exactly through the center of the mould in such a way that it meets the iron ring that you put at the foot of the mould for this purpose. I have been induced to present this paper to the Institute because I have been unable to find any publication containing a disctission of this subject. In some of our technical schools and colleges the student is required to construct or copy (generally the latter) a number of profile sections as part of his routine work; but little attention is given to the methods of projecting observed dips and exposures upon the section line, and still less to the method of constructing the under (or above) ground curves. As a result of this lack of instruction every engineer or geologist is compelled to invent for himself a system, or copy the style of others. Geological profile sections have frequently been used to determine underground structure from data obtained at the surface, but the experience of engineers in the anthracite coal-fields has shown that they are to be relied upon only in exceptional instances. The possibility of indicating underground curvatures from dipangles observed at the surface has been found to be limited to a mere approximation of the larger flexures, As a means of predicting the depth and shape of minor rolls, they have been found most unsatisfactory. In 1997 Chile was the world's largest copper mine producer with around 3.4 million metric tomes of copper. Conventional technology (conminution-flotation- smelting-converting-electrorefining) for copper sulfide ores was used. For copper oxidized ores hydrometallurgical processes (heap leaching-solvent extraction- electrowinning) were employed. Consequently, the most important waste effluents include flotation tailings, gaseous emissions, smelter slags, acidic and alkaline wastewater, electrolytic sludges, solid residues from leaching, etc. The introduction of stricter environmental regulations are forcing the Chilean industry to minimise the generation of waste and promote cleaner production. Gas emissions such as SO2 and arsenic from smelters and process wastewater are the major problems at this stage. The environmental impact assessment of gas emissions in all six largest smelters namely Chuquicamata, Caletones, Potrenllos, Ventanas, Paipote and Chagres led to design a "decontamination plan." The implementation of this plan resulted in (i) the installation of sulfuric acid plants for SO2 abatement and (ii) the installation of electrostatic precipitators to remove arsenic oxides condensed from cooling gases. The aim of this paper is (i) to describe the type of waste associated to the various stages of the metallurgical processes and (ii) review the main abatement technologies used in medium and large size companies.

Since our firm was established by Mr. Price in 1937, we have followed an investment philosophy which is based on the belief that investment in growth stocks is the most assured way of achieving superior, long term investment accomplishment. There are many criteria that we use to select growth companies but the most important is a combination of superior management operating in an industry with above average growth potential. This growth stock approach is the cornerstone of our investment strategy for two of the three mutual funds sponsored by the Price organization and for our private clients. However, during the past 5 years we have seen inflation accelerate due to a variety of factors including the inability of our government to meet seemingly unlimited needs with limited revenue sources. While there might be temporary periods of price stability, we believe that inflation will still continue to be the investor's greatest problem in future years. Our conviction that inflation would increase combined with the acceleration of inflation in the late 1960s stimulated an intensive investment research effort, on our part, to identify those companies with strong natural resource bases -- who own or control large, secure, and low cost tangible assets. Over the longer term and in an environment of a depreciating dollar some of these firms should be able to develop and sell these assets at higher prices. While we still believe that investing in growth companies is a sound investment strategy to offset inflation, we also believe that certain natural resource companies will show well above average investment performance. In the newest Price mutual fund, The Rowe Price New Era Fund, we have, as a matter of policy, placed a large portion of the portfolio in natural resource companies.

It is often a tedious matter to get a solution of pig iron or steel, for the determination of phosphorus, which is absolutely free from silica. Where pig iron rich in silicon is dissolved in hydrochloric or nitric acid in the usual procedure, it is necessary, not only to evaporate the solution to complete dry ness, but to heat the dry residue for some beam in an air-bath to a temperature of about 120° C. The oxide of iron is thus rendered insoluble in nitric acid, and is only slowly dissolved by hydrochloric acid. In the method of determining silicon by nitric and sulphuric acid, described in the Transactions of the Institute, Vol. VII, page 346, arid Vol. VIII, page 508, we obtain in one or two hours a solution of the iron in the form of ferric sulphate entirely free from silica, and containing free sulphuric acid. It occurred to Us that this solution might be made available for the determination of the phosphorus by the molybdate method. The following experiments mere tried with unsatisfactory results. 1st. The iron was precipitated by ammonia, the precipitate filtered, washed, and dissolved in nitric acid. 2d. The iron was precipitated as basic acetate and dissolved in nitric acid. 3d. The solution was neutralized by ammonia, and nitric acid added in small excess. In all these cases the phosphorus obtained by precipitating by ammonium molybdate and magnesia-mixture was too low. The following method was then tried with success. The filtrate from the silica and graphite was evaporated to small bulk and heated in a porcelain dish on a sand-bath. until fumes of sulphuric acid ceased to escape. The dry residue was taken up with dilute nitric acid and the solution precipitated by ammonium molyldate. The phosphorus was weighed as magnesium pyrophosphate. The results were satisfactory. To save time, the original solution of the iron in nitric and sulphuric acids was evaporated to dryness and heated as before until

Early in the year 1875, some difficulty was experienced in the " Old blast-furnaces " of the Cambria Iron Company, at Johnstown, Pennsylvania, arising from the increased use of native coke, prepared in Belgian ovens near the furnaces, in mixture with Connellsville coke, in the production of Bessemer pig-iron. This was the more surprising at that time, because a very caulplete coal-crushing and washing apparatus, after the Bradford plan, had just been put into successful operation, affording a pure coal for coke-making. It was confidently expected that this thorough cleansing of the coal would improve the quality of the coke and fit it for the increasing manufacture of Bessemer pig-iron. But the trouble with the native coke continued. Experiments in fuel charges-increasing and reducing them—failed to correct the irregular working of these furnaces. Increasing the charge of native coke produced abnormal heat at the top of the furnace, reducing it cooled the furnace below. At this stage of affairs, the Hon. Daniel J. Morrell, general manager of the Cambria Iron Company, requested the writer to make the requisite investigation to determine the nature of this coke-difficulty, and to ascertain why the Johnstown coke could not be used in blastfurnace work as well as Connellsville. This task at first did not appear to present any special difficulties, but subsequently it expanded into proportions that caused no little anxiety. The first effort was directed to procuring average samples of Johnstown and Connellsville coke. At this period of the investigation, it was assumed that the whole matter could be intelligently solved by comparing the chemical analyses of the two cokes: Johnstown Coke. Connellsville Coke. The actual amount of any metal volatilized from a mixture of metals depends on the magnitude of its partial vapor pressure under the specified conditions of temperature, and on the circumstances attending the heating—in particular, on the duration of heating, the volume of gas coming into actual contact with the surface of the metal, the extent of this surface, and the rate of diffusion of the volatile metal from the body of the melt toward the surface.' If two (or more) metals are volatilizing from the same mixture of metals, the several conditions are identical except for the difference in partial pressure and in rate of diffusion of the volatilizing metals; the second of these two factors is without doubt only of secondary importance as it is probable that the rates of diffusion of the volatilizing metals would be very similar. Hence, in order to gain an estimate of the relative amounts of two metals that may be volatilized from a given mixture, it is necessary to know the vapor pressure, or, more precisely, to ascertain for each metal its partial vapor pressure in equilibrium with the liquid (or solid) alloy under the particular circumstances. The partial pressure of each constituent depends on the effective concentration of that constituent in the alloy2 as well as on the vapor pressure of the constituent when pure, and it can be calculated when both of the above factors are known. The first step, therefore, is to ascertain the vapor pressure of the several pure metals. During foundry sand reclamation process development, molds formed from reclaimed chromite sand showed a rapid decline in tensile strength during thermal cycling tests. Because this characteristic could limit reuse of chromite sand in the. foundry, the sand was examined in detail Scanning electron microscopy, x-ray mapping, magnetic susceptibility, and x-ray diffraction were utilized to evaluate processed chromite sand. It was found that process variables such as binder composition, reclamation temperature, and processing method had a significant effect on the chromite sand particle surface. X-ray diffraction indicated a crystallographic change in the processed sands. Magnetic susceptibility also increased after processing. Diffusion of iron to the particle surface and increased surface roughness were identified as potential causes of the decreased tensile strength in the molds.

"Coal gangue is industrial waste containing Al2O3 and SiO2 with great recycling and reuse values. This work is aimed at extracting Al2O3 content in the coal gangue by a process of carbonthermal reduction - alkaline leaching. The Al2O3 and SiO2 contents first became a mixture of SiC and Al2O3 in the process of carbonthermal reduction, and then Al2O3 was separated by leaching in NaOH solution, thus producing the sodium aluminate solution for Al(OH)3 precipitation. The products generated at various stages in the process were inspected using XRD and chemical analysis. The effects of parameters such as reduction temperature, carbon ratio, NaOH concentration, leaching time, leaching temperature, stirring speed, etc were investigated in details.IntroductionCoal gangue is an industrial residue resulted from the process of coal mining and washing, accounting for 100 - 150 kg with 1 ton raw coal mined. The existence of coal gangue in large quantities has become a serious problem for environment pollution. On the other hand, the chemical compositions of coal gangue are Si02 and Ah03 primarily. In China, the accumulation storage capacity of Ah03 in coal gangue is not less than 600 million ton at a rough estimate, which should be considered as an abundant second resource [1]. If the alumina can be recycling and reused effectively from coal gangue, it will not only reduce the imperilments caused by coal gangue, but also yield good economic returns.Generally, the processes of extracting Al2O3 from coal gangue can be divided into acid leaching (vitriol or hydrochloric acid) and alkaline leaching (mostly NaOH) [2]. The acid leaching processes have many problems, such as lower leaching ratio, corroding the equipments, recycling the spent acid hardly, etc. The primary matter of alkaline leaching process is silica dissolving with alumina, which brings perplexing desilication process, alumina loss seriously and higher energy consumption."

Total yield and backscattered electron coefficients were measured in this Bureau of Mines study in an microanalyzer as a function of atomic number and of primary crier: ;y in the 15- to 35-kilovolt range. The electron coefficients were obtained indirectly from measurements of the specimen electron current and the primary beam current collected in a Faraday cage and were measured with a precision better than 0.5 percent. Secondary electron emission was suppressed with opposing potential applied to a screen grid surrounding the specimen. The values of the backscattered electron coefficients agreed with published values within 5 percent.

"Steel making technology poses strong potentials for environmental protection in three direction. One is pollution control on steel making process itself. Japanese steel industry has cut down various type of emission drastically since 1970's. Secondary, those process technology can be applied to reduce environmental burden in other industrial sectors. One of the successful examples is municipal waste treatment facility. Thirdly, development of high performance steel products, such as high strength steel for automobile body, can contribute to improve environmental performance during their use, based on the concept of life cycle assessment. Fair market value, in the legal sense , is the price which a prudent and knowledgeable buyer and a prudent and knowledgeable seller, acting without constraint or compulsion , will agree upon to exchange an asset. In the ordinary commercial or engineering usage, the term may imply simply the market value or a reasonable and equitable price. The engineer evaluator who is called upon to express an opinion about the fair market value of an asset may be able to base his estimate on the sale price of similar assets or on the market values of stock. Frequently such indicators of value are not available and the evaluator must devise other means of appraisal. Mineral resource properties may be thought of as having value by virtue of the existing or potential ability to produce at a profit. Conventional procedures permit the computation of the present value of future revenues having due regard for the time value of money and the risks attendant upon the realization of the venture. Such computations have gained wide acceptance as a basis for the estimation of fair market value.

THE problem of the influence of hot surfaces upon gaseous combustion is one which, from a purely scientific stand-point, has engaged, for many years past, the attention of Prof. William A. Bone, of Leeds University and the Imperial College, London; and as his recent work has been the direct outcome of earlier scientific investigation, it will be appropriate, by way of introduction, to review briefly the present position of science with respect to this important subject, as stated by Professor Bone. One may perhaps best arrive at an understanding of the term " ?flameless " or " surface " combustion by considering certain facts which differentiate it from the more familiar processes of combustion as they occur in ordinary flames. All hot surfaces have an accelerating influence upon chemical changes in gaseous systems. If, at any temperature, a gaseous system, A, tends to pass over into another system, B, contact with a solid at the same temperature will accelerate the process. To take a very simple example, if a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen in their combining proportions (electrolytic gas) were maintained in an inclosure with smooth glass walls at a temperature of, say, 450° C., there would certainly be a tendency to form steam, but the rate of change would be negligibly small. If, however, there were brought into the system some porous solid material at the same temperature, so that a large surface was exposed to the gases, the rate of change would at once be rapidly accelerated in the layer of gas immediately in contact with the hot surface. A full understanding of the behavior of sulphur in the basic open-hearth process has been delayed by lack of dependable data covering a wide range of slag conditions in the absence of other complicating factors that are likely to be present under operating conditions. It has been generally accepted that strongly basic slags will dissolve more sulphur than will those in which the acidic and basic constituents are more nearly balanced. It has been known that both slag and metal would absorb sulphur from the flame when the sulphur content of the fuel is high. It has been generally believed that manganese assists in the transfer of sulphur from metal to slag. Almost nothing has been known of the effect of temperature upon desulphurization;the data have been conflicting and there has been a tendency to depend rather heavily upon analogy with the better understood desulphurizing reaction of the blast furnace. Many attempts have been made to build up from open-hearth data a satisfactory theory of the chemical reactions involved in the process. That this has been an extremely difficult task is owing to two reasons that have been very generally recognized. The first is the parallel and simultaneous reaction of sulphur transfer between flame and bath. The second is the difficulty of distinguishing between the factors that ultimately limit the transfer from metal to slag—i.e., equilibrium conditions—and those whose influence is only upon the rate of transfer. It has been the object of the work here recounted to study the equilibrium distribution of sulphur between slag and metal in the absence of these complicating factors, with the hope that a better understanding of the equilibria involved would lead to a better control of the over-all process in the open-hearth furnace. A review of the literature on steelmaking reveals almost complete agreement with respect to the paramount importance of lime in promoting desulphurization. In expressing this effect in quantitative terms, however, and in formulating the relationships between the concentrations of other slag components and the desulphurizing power, there is little agreement. For instance, the "basicity" or basic strength of the slag is commonly measured by some kind of ratio of concentration of basic to acidic oxides.
