This paper presents an outline of several models that have been developed to aid surface mine planners evaluate alternative mining methods and dragline sizes. The models presented belong to a larger group of models that are incorporated in the SEAMPLAN computerized mine and reclamation planning system. SEAMPLAN was developed in the College of Engineering at Montana State University. Initial funding for the development was derived from the USDA Forest Ser- vice and EPA. Enhancements to SEAMPLAN are currently being funded by DOE (Contract DE-AC22-80ET-14173). SEAMPLAN is a comprehensive surface mine and reclamation planning tool that contains a number of major modules: Data Entry and Review, Production Analysis, Reclamation Analysis, and Impact Analysis. The Production Analysis Module contains programs that enable the user to evaluate alternative methods of removing overburden in a surface coal mine and then to assess auxiliary activities required to support the overburden removal operation. A set of these programs addresses the use of draglines for removing overburden. Six basic dragline mining techniques have been modeled. For one-pass dragline operations four methods can be analyzed: (i) simple side cast, (ii) side bench, (iii) extended bench, and (iv) extended bench with side bench. Two methods of two-pass operations are modeled: (i) single dragline, and (ii) tandem draglines.

[In an increasing degree in recent years, especially since the war, men in many parts of the world are turning their attention to the problems of the future, attempting to appraise the basis and extent of man's progress and interpret the problem that he faces in the near future. The war made clear to ma persons the degree to which modern industry depends upon t continuous flow of enormous quantities of raw materials, a especially of the minerals. In many circles throughout t world, the question of adequate supplies of the mine especially the fuels and metals, for near as well as more remo needs is receiving serious consideration. As a result, persons representing the state as well as industry are looking to geologists and engineers for all the data that throw light on the distribution, extent and availability of the minerals that must serve coming generations.] Obviously, in a brief research I have been able to consider only a few sources of the metals in Europe, perhaps fifty out of a total of many hundreds. In order that the conclusions may have value, however, I have chosen districts which have been important sources during some epoch of the last three hundred years or more.

This morning we will start our meeting by turning it over to a very distinguished gentleman. I'm sure all of you know him. He started his work career many, many years ago, but lie doesn't look nearly this old, and his energy belies this. From 1.910 to 1916 he was a chemist with the American Smelting & Refining Co. at. Garfield, Utah. From 16 to '17 he was a broker with J. A. Hogle Company at Salt Lake. From 1917 to 1948 he was a metallurgist, ore buyer, assistant manager and later general manager of the Utah department. ASRC at Salt Lake City; and also president of the Garfield Chemical Co. Since 1951 to the present. time he has been President and General Manager of the Independent Coal & Coke Co. and Vice President of the Western Rock Bit Co. He has held many, many honorary positions; former Chairman of the Board of Regents of the University of Utah, former President of the Salt Lake Winter Sports Association, Past President. of the Community Chest there, and is presently a Director of National Coal Association, a Director of the First Security Bank of Salt Lake City, Utah, and also a Director of the Hotel Utah.

Foreword The three case histories and the liquid fuels planning scenario presented in this paper span a twenty year period, from the pioneering days of computers in the petroleum producing industry during the mid-fifties, to the energy crisis era of the seventies. Inasmuch as two of the main actors, Ian McKinnon and I, are featured in all three case histories, while I am currently involved in the fossil fuels scenario, this paper provides four related and personal spot readings along an evolutionary path: from the one dimensional technical domain to the multi-dimensional techno-socio-economic domain of computer applications in the petroleum industry. Coincident with this evolution in the direction of increasingly comprehensive and powerful computer applications, the evolution in hardware/software capability and in analytical power are also kept in perspective. The three case histories are: 1. The Bonnie Glen-Wizard Lake Case (Calgary, Alberta, 1955-1957); 2. The TransCanada-Great Lakes Gas Transmission Case (Ottawa-Washington, 1966); 3. The Westcoast Transmission - El Paso Pipelines Gas Export/ Import Case (Ottawa-Vancouver-Washington, 1966-1967). This paper describes the results of a digital computer simulation study in which the impact of the proposed truck dispatching on the overall mine productivity was investigated for an operating open pit mine. In the study, the existing operation was first simulated for a one-month period, using both the actual time study data and the computed cycle times. By adjusting certain input parameters to the simulation program, the actual one month production was first duplicated through simulation. Afterwards, the operation was again simulated in a dispatch mode. Comparison of simulation results under the dispatch mode, with the initial base case simulation results, showed a definite improvement in overall productivity with dispatching; i.e., approximately 10% gain for the operation. As expected, the results also showed that the extent of possible improvement did vary with the particular pit configuration being investigated.

An insufficient hydrologic data base exists for most large and small coal basins in Alaska owing to the lack of need in the past to collect data. The runoff process is insufficiently understood which is complicated by specifically northern phenomenon, and the lack of understanding of hydrologic relationships in permafrost environment. This paper presents an understanding of the hydrologic effects of frozen ground and presents methods by which the influence of surface mining upon the hydrologic balance can be analyzed.

In order to explore electrically a terrain composed of a succession of horizontal beds, a current of known intensity i is caused to flow between two grounds A and B, and the resultant drop of potential , caused by the resistance of the earth, is measured between two given points in the soil, M and N. In practice it is convenient to choose the two points M and N so that they lie on the line AB and their midpoint coincides with the middle 0, of that line, although this is not imperative. When the lengths L and I of the two lines AB and MN are varied, equations are obtained which may be solved for the resistivity p of the subsoil at various depths. Recall briefly that the formula 4 x l gives the average resistivity, in the horizontal direction, of a layer of earth which extends to a depth1 about equal to L/4. This elementary concept is adequate for numerous practical applications. Nevertheless, it must be said that, in many cases, a rigorous mathematical analysis may be made, provided it is always a question of homogeneous, superposed horizontal beds. The authors expect to publish, later on, appropriate methods of calculation for some specific cases.

Recent disclosures concerning strengthening of anisotropic sheet materials under biaxial stresses are reviewed. This biaxial strengthening has been termed "texture hardening" by Backofen and is related to the normal anisotropy parameter, R. Measurements of R made on three annealed titanium alloys indicate a Ti-4Al alloy will have the greatest potential for texture hardening, followed in order by Ti-5Al-2.5Sn and Ti-6Al-4V. Relative to sheet texture, a review of the deformation mechanisms in titanium alloys would indicate that a preferred orientation for "texture hardening" is where the (0001) pole is normal to the sheet plane. This was confirmed by determination oj (0001) pole figures for the above three alloys. High R values are related to pole figures with (0001) normal to the sheet plane, whereas low R values are related to pole figures with (0001) split in the transverse direction from the sheet normal. PUBLISHED work by Backofen et al. 1 and Hosford and Backofen2 based on hill's' mathematical theory of yielding in anisotropic metals has indicated that significant strength advantages under biaxial stresses are possible in hcp alloys, provided an ideal (0001) [1010] sheet texture exists. This tendency to strengthen under biaxial stresses has been termed "texture hardening".1 It can be quantita- tively characterized by a strain-ratio parameter, R, where R may be determined from the ratio of natural width strain to natural thickness strain as measured on a uniaxial test specimen cut parallel to the rolling direction. If R is greater than 1.0, then strengthening under biaxial tension would be predicted. Considering the a titanium alloys which have an hcp crystal structure, Williams and Eppelsheimer4 have reported that commercial-purity grades deviate from the ideal (0001) sheet texture mainly in an approximate 30-deg rotation of the basal plane, toward the transverse sheet direction. However, McHargue et a1.5 have shown that the angle of rotation of the basal plane is sensitive to alloy content. In particular, a titanium alloy with 3.8 pct Al was reported to have the ideal (0001) [1010] texture after cold rolling. Additionally, Backofen et a1.1 using plane-strain compression tests have reported R values greater than 5.0 for the commercial 0 alloy Ti-5A1-2.Sn (110-AT). In view of these findings, a program was initiated to further determine the potential of commercial Ti-5A1-2.5Sn and an experimental Ti-4A1 alloy with respect to "texture hardening". Also, because of its wide commercial use, Ti-6A1-4V was included in the investigation. So far my consulting in industrial minerals has been confined principally to carbonate rocks,-salt, coking coal, and glass sand. Much of this work has been for companies either too small for a full-time geological staff or unaware of the value of employing one or more qualified geologists permanently. It gave me considerable personal satisfaction to see several of the latter companies employ one or two full-time geologists after the completion of a consulting contract with them. One possible reason why some companies lack the wisdom to hire geologists is that they are dominated by engineers who still subscribe to the old idea that engineers are self-sufficient in all fields. They could have learned this from their professors. I once knew a Dean of Engineering who got purple in the face when a faculty committee was discussing the financing of a broad gauged engineering project and suggestions were made that assistance be obtained from the Schools of Business and Law and from some of the science departments tie pounded the table and shouted "Engineers are trained to handle all this!" In teaching engineering geology some years ago I used to tell the class repeatedly that the course would not make them geologists, that the purpose was to teach them

THE years 1914-15-16 were a pioneering period in mining, milling, and copper metallurgy generally. It was uncertain just what path the crushing, grinding, and concentrating processes would take. This situation was quite embarrassing to the directors of some of our large porphyry properties, then being equipped for production. Inspiration had already made several designs for its proposed 15,000-ton concentrator, incorporating in them the latest devices developed in the art of gravity concentration, only to have the work vitiated by the rapid march of events. In a little improvised plant, built on ground that is now in the crater of subsidence over the Inspiration- Miami orebodies, flotation was being experimentally ' applied to Inspiration ore by Minerals Separation engineers in 1914, with results indicating that this process would be of major importance in the concentration of the sulfides. How best to apply it, and especially how to crush and grind the ore to the very much finer sizes required for the new process, was a serious question, properly to be answered only by doing it, in full- sized machines, under regular 'operating conditions.

Discussion of the paper of C. F. TOLMAN, JR., presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 110, February, 1916, pp. 401 to 433. Louis C. GRATON, Cambridge, Mass.-Of particular interest at this time is any paper that deals with chalcocite, the characteristic product of secondary enrichment and the copper mineral of greatest commercial importance, and that seeks to aid in the distinction between primary and secondary chalcocite-a distinction of much scientific and practical importance but one which thus far it has proved difficult to draw. The present paper on this subject by Professor Tolman, like the ,many preceding it which he and his colleagues at Stanford have published in the last couple of years, contains much of interest and suggestiveness. Without endeavoring at this time to review or comment upon Professor Tolman's conclusions in detail, I may say that many of them are in accord with the findings that my associates and I have been accumulating in the course of studying secondary enrichment in many of the copper deposits of the country. In a previous paper,l a method was suggested for determining the depth to a bed in the simple case of a uniform overlying layer of constant thickness. The main purpose of the present paper is to show how a slight modification of that method has been used to interpret specific data obtained in the upper peninsula of Michigan by the staff of the Depart- ment of Mathematics and Physics of the Michigan College of Mining and Technology. The method of Tagg2 has also been used on the same data, thus furnishing a comparison of the two methods, as well as a method of using the two methods jointly. The method of measuring the apparent resistivity is that suggested by Wenner,3 and illustrated in Fig. 1. A current I enters the earth at the positive pole C and leaves it at the negative pole D. HAVE given considerable thought during the past year to the subject of licensing of engineers and par-ticularly to the position which the mining engineer should take on this question. I have found, however, that it is not a subject which yields much result for the thought expended on it. So far as any published record will show, mining engineers have been either ignorant of the extent to which the movement for the licensing of engineers has progressed or else indifferent to it. It is true that the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, by a questionnaire sent out to its member-ship, did a great deal in calling this matter to the atten-tion of the mining profession, and so far as I know, the report of its committee, which analyzed the replies received, is the only published statement of the feelings and opinions of our branch of the engineering profes-sion. It is to be hoped that the conclusions shown by that report, namely, that mining engineers are almost unanimously opposed to the principle of licensing and consequently any legislation dealing with it, has received serious thought and that we are ready for an even more thorough consideration of the subject.

"The Ferderber mine consists of a series of Archean gold-bearing quartz lenses within a shear zone that crosscuts the central part of the quartz diorite Bourlamaque batholith. This zone has sharp contacts with the enclosing quartz diorite, and on average strikes N70E and dips 65SE. Along the contact with the shear zone, the quartz diorite is chloritized, sericitized and carbonatized. The chlorite schist within the zone is probably derived from mafic dykes.The geometry and distribution of structural features within the Ferderber shear zone suggest a long history of repeated movements. The majority of gold-bearing lenses were first emplaced during a probable early period of brittle shear which resulted from strike-slip movement. They were then folded and pulled into boudins by a later episode of reverse movement that accompanied ductile shear. New mineralized veins were emplaced in the shear zone and deformed at this time.Mineralized veins are dominated by quartz, carbonates, tourmaline and micas. Gold is more common within pyrite where chalcopyrite is abundant and is generally in contact with both pyrite and chalcopyrite at ""triple point"" grain junctions. This intimate association suggests that copper may have played an important role in gold deposition.Recent exploration has shown that the Bourlamaque batholith is cut by many parallel or en echelon shear zones. Study of ""Landsat"" and aerial photographs has indicated a number of linear structures striking ENE-WSW and ESE-WNW which form a conjugate system. The intersection of these two structural trends presents an interesting exploration target."

EDWIN LUDLOW, the 41st President of the A. I. M. E., died in Muskogee, Okla., on Feb. 10, 1924, after a brief illness of influenza followed by pneumonia. He was born in Oakdale, Long Island, N. Y., March 12, 1858, a son of William Handy and Louise (Nicoll) Ludlow, attended Flushing (L. I.) Institute 1868-75: and Columbia School of Mines (N. Y.) where he graduated with the degree of Engineer of Mines with the Class of 1879. After graduation his first employment was as assistant engineer in river and harbor work on the Delaware River near Philadelphia. In 1881 he went to Mexico as one of the engineers on the Mexican Central Railroad, then building from Laredo, Texas, to Mexico City. The road being in financial difficulties he returned to the United, [states, and shortly thereafter was made superintendent of the Union Coal Co.'s collieries located in the western middle anthracite field, between Shamokin and Mt. Carmel. Ludlow and Arthur H. Storrs, then superintendent of the Neilson Shaft Colliery, in Shamokin, were known throughout that section as the baby superintendents, both under 25 years of age. INTRODUCTION. IN presenting this paper I will attempt to answer certain questions proposed at this meeting and describe and illustrate methods of producing sound steel in an economical and hence commercial manner, which are adaptable to the production of practically all steel manufacturers, by readily effected rational changes in the methods of casting, cooling, and subsequent handling of the ingots. In some of the high-grade mills of America, where it is essential to obtain perfectly sound billets or blooms, it is the practice to discard from 35 to 40 per cent. of the crop- or pipe-end, and even with this excessive discard, secondary pipe or shrinkage-cavities are frequently discovered during subsequent working of the blooms and billets into their various manufactured products. The usual discard of from 10 to 20 per cent. from the crop-end of the ingot, which is made by the present generally employed methods of form and solidifying of the castings, certainly does not give the slightest assurance of the saleable product being physically sound or chemically homogeneous. I am aware that in the past there has been and at the present time there still is a decided difference of expert opinion as to what constitutes physically sound steel.

Considering the two great interests of to-day, in iron upon the one hand and steel upon the other, and recognizing with measurable distinctness the peculiar fitness of each for special services to which they are applied, the proposition to unite the two metals in combination, to bring into simultaneous use the peculiar advantages which each offers, has great attractions. The limited success which has been attained by trying to bring about such combinations of the two metals through the use of fluxes in welding, has led to the general adoption of the opinion that an effective union of the two metals is impracticable, or to the view that if practicable it would have but limited commercial value. Such opinions are, I think, premature and erroneous, and having gained some knowledge of the character and value of the "Wheeler process" for welding iron and steel without the use of fluxes, I submit the following observations and opinions of the matter for your information, with the hope of eliciting such a discussion of the subject as it may require. The principle of the invention is to bring the two metals simultaneously to a welding heat in one pile, and then to manipulate it.

The spherical element computer code DMC (Distinct Motion Code) used to model rock motion resulting from blasting has been enhanced to allow routine computer simulations of bench blasting. The enhancements required for bench blast simulation include: 1) modifying the gas flow portion of DMC, 2) adding a new explosive gas equation of state capability, 3) modifying the porosity calculation, and 4) accounting for blastwell spacing parallel to the face.
