Bench-scale studies were made on a reductive hydrometallurgical procedure to convert chalcopyrite flotation concentrate to copper metal or a readily leachable sulfide. Reductive conversion of chalcopyrite and dissolution of iron and sulfur were accomplished in hydrochloric or sulfuric acid solution by the addition of metallic copper, iron, or lead. Use of metallic copper as the reductant enabled extraction of 95 and 46 percent of the iron and sulfur, respectively. The products were ferrous iron, hydrogen sulfide, and a copper sulfide. Use of metallic iron or lead as the reductant enabled extraction of 95 percent of both the iron and sulfur. The products obtained with metallic iron or lead were ferrous iron, hydrogen sulfide, and metallic copper.

Barite occurs as bedded and vein-type deposits in Nevada along a north-northeast trending zone that Parallels the Antler orogenic belt. The Nevada bedded deposits presently supply 85% of domestic barite production, used primarily as a weighting agent in the petroleum drilling industry. The ore bodies are controlled structurally and stratigraphically along regional and local structural breaks in siliceous eugeosynclinal rocks of lower to middle Paleozoic age. Evidence for the origin of the barite includes sedimentary and hydrothermal features, indicating that localization probably took place along fractures in the sea floor.

Low-temperature heat capacities and standard enthalpy of formation of copper difluoride (CuF2) were determined by the Bureau of Mines. The low-temperature heat capacities were determined from 11 to 302 K by adiabatic calorimetry. The enthalpy of formation was determined by HC1 solution calorimetry. The standard values of entropy (S°) and enthalpy of formation (?Hf°) at 298.15 K are l8.65±0.03 cal/deg mole and -129.02±0.29 kcal/mole, respectively.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the occurrence of slickensides in mine roof in the Pittsburgh coalbed in a portion of the Valley Camp No.3 mine in southwestern Pennsylvania to improve the potential for prediction of slicken-sided zones and determine the orientations of the most prominent slickensided planes. Two distinct types of slickensides were identified; those which were associated with clay veins observed in the coalbed (genetic), and those which were unrelated to any visible structure (nongenetic). The study draws three conclusions: (1) Nongenetic slickensides are not the result of tectonic forces, (2) both genetic and nongenetic slickensides tend to dip at an angle of 30°, and (3) genetic slickensides tend to be alined parallel to the trend of the clay vein and usually dip toward the center of the clay vein. A schematic roof bolting plan is presented that may provide improved roof support where slickensides are present. Roof stability could be improved by supplemental bolting in the direction normal to the plane of slickensides.

IN a previous paper1 a method for the measurement of the compara-tive desulphurizing power of slags was described and data, were presented covering the range of likely slags containing up to 10 per cent MgO. In the present work the range is extended to include Tags containing up to 20 per cent MgO, and the effect of temperature on 5 per cent and 15 per cent MgO sings over the range 147.5° to 1525° C. is included. The method used was that described in the previous paper except that some of the temperature measurements were made with a noble-metal thermocouple instead of a tungsten-graphite thermocouple. Twelve-gram charges of 0.S per cent sulphur-metal and 5-gram charges of slag were subjected to heating for 30 min. at a prescribed temperature. The charges were analyzed for sulphur content. For purposes of comparison, desulphuriz-ing power is defined as the ratio of the percentage of sulphur found in the slag to that found in the metal. Six slag and metal charges were made coincidentally in holes in a section of all electrode graphite rod. One slag and metal charge was used as a control by means of which adjustment in the desulphurization value could be made for small varia-tions in temperature and other factors. For convenient presentation of the data, the slags are arranged in groups -in each of which one of the four main slag components is constant. Thus, the 15 per cent MgO slags are presented separately from those containing 20 per cent MgO.

A produção de peças cerâmicas pela indústria da cerâmica vermelha é composta por diferentes processos, dentre eles, se destaca o processo de queima. O processo de queima é um dos principais responsáveis pelas propriedades finais da peça cerâmica, tais como: resistência mecânica e porosidade. Por ser um processo gradativo, onde a temperatura é elevada até determinado grau, o ambiente proporcionado pelo forno é fundamental para a homogeneidade de queima das peças, no entanto, existem diferentes formas para a realização dessa queima. O objetivo deste projeto é comparar e avaliar o processo de queima por forno Hoffman e forno Caieira. Para caracterização da argila foram realizados os ensaios de granulometria, densidade real dos grãos, limites de Atterberg e análise química. Para acompanhamento da temperatura do forno foi utilizado um termopar digital e verificada a temperatura durante o processo de queima. Para avaliação do melhor processo de queima foram realizados os ensaios de variação linear e absorção de água das peças cerâmicas. Os resultados indicaram que as peças cerâmicas queimadas pelo forno Hoffman apresentam propriedades superiores aos do forno Caieira.

Two 6.17-m-diam (20.25-ft) shafts, said to be the largest ever opened with mechanical raise boring techniques, were completed in May and June 1978, at Monterey Coal Co.'s No. 1 mine near Carlinville, Ill. According to the shaft contractor for the project, Frontier-Kemper Constructors, the openings are 60% greater in cross section than the largest previous raise-bored shaft, which had a diameter of 4.85 m (16 ft). Both vertical shafts are 93 m (305 ft) in total depth, with the upper 28-30 m (90-100 ft) sunk and lined by conventional methods through unconsolidated overburden and the remainder mechanically bored through sedimentary rock. The two shafts will be used for service access as well as to augment ventilation.

Fe-Ni and Fe-Ni-C martensite specimens have been deformed in compression at room temperature and the habit planes of operative deformation twins determined by two-surface optical trace analysis. The full orientations of the martensite crystals were determined from divergent X-ray beam diffraction patterns. The experimental results are in excelled agreement with predicted twinning modes. In particular, the habit planes of some deformation twins in bcc martensites are consistent with a "Type XI compound'' twinning mode with Kl, Kz, 71, 77~ elements given by {5, 8, 11) {ioi}, (33) (ill) Tetragonal derivatives of this mode are operative in bct martensites. UnUSUAL deformation twinning modes have been reported by Richman' to occur in Fe-Ni-C martensites with bcc and bct structures. The twin habit planes were determined by single-surface trace analysis (pole locus method) and the remaining twinning elements were determined from the geometry of twin-twin intersections. The indices assigned to the observed habit planes are (3 101, "(089)" and "{0, 1,13)" or "{1,2,7} ", and only in the first case do the twinning elements correspond to a predicted twinning mode. This is mode 1.4 in the paper by Bevis et al. The results presented in Ref. 2 indicate that previously unpublished bcc and bct modes should be operative in preference to the (130) mode and anomalous modes reported by Richman. In view of these results and the uncertainties involved in determining habit planes from single-surface trace analysis and twinning elements from twin-twin intersections5 a two-surface trace analysis of deformation twins in Fe-Ni and Fe-Ni-C martensites has been carried out. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Two alloys with compositions Fe-23 pct Ni-0.6 pct C and Fe-30.4 pct Ni were prepared from 4N pure materials by induction melting under a vacuum of 10"5 mm Hg. The alloys were homogenized at 1350'~ for 5 days. Both of these alloys are austenitic at room temperature with M, temperature - — 50"C. The aus-tenite grain size of the Fe-Ni-C alloy was approximately 300 to 400 p. The Fe-Ni alloy was remelted in a vertical tube furnace and the melt lowered slowly from the hot zone of the furnace to produce s ingle -crystal austenite specimens. Specimens approximately 10 by 5 by 5 mm were cut from the ingots and quenched to various temperatures below the Ms temperature. The specimens were elec-tropolished in a 10 pct perchloric acetic electrolyte before being deformed in compression at room temperature. Martensite plates which exhibited profuse deformation twinning were selected for analysis and the specimen polished on a second surface such that the two surfaces which contained the martensite plate enclosed an obtuse angle of approximately 145 deg. The specimens were then electropolished to reveal the traces of the deformation twins on both surfaces. The full orientations of the martensite crystals were determined using a divergent X-ray beam technique (Kossel line technique) employing an AEI SEM2 electron probe microanalyzer. Details of this technique which include a detailed description of the Kossel camera attachment to the microanalyzer used in the present experiments have been discussed elsewhere.3 Only additional details relevant to this investigation are discussed here. The specimens were mounted with one surface normal to the incident electron beam as illustrated schematically in Fig. 1. The martensite plates to be analyzed were located using the normal scanning equipment of the microanalyzer. The position of the electron beam and hence the position of the source of divergent X-rays generated within the crystal could be located to within 1 p. Exposure times of approximately 8 to 10 min were required for back-reflection Kossel patterns and it was found that useful diffraction patterns could be obtained consistently from heavily deformed martensite plates. A reference line (carbon contamination mark) produced on the two surfaces of the specimen by scanning the electron beam in a direction having a known relationship with the reference !ine in the X-ray camera enabled the full orientation of the crystals to be determined. En este sentido, se encontró similitud en la composición mineralógica a niveles macro y microscópico entre los yacimientos mencionados anteriormente. La mineralización en "Río Seco" presenta carácteres geométricos semejantes a los mencionados para el tipo "veta", con un desarrollo notable en el tamaño de todas las fases minerales. Asimismo la diversidad y evolución geométrica de los tipos de mineralización metálica y la transformación química de las fases minerales en cada uno de los yacimientos estudiados, indican la intervención de más de un proceso genético en la formación de los mismos.

A computer program has been developed which will locate the economic limits of an open-pit mine and also designate which ore and waste blocks to remove per period (years or quarters) to maximize the discounted cash flow over the life of the mine. A set of operating constraints was carefully selected so that the following functions are controlled: (1) the removal of overburden by preproduction and production stripping exposes a fixed amount of ore; (2) a constant manpower and equipment usage is insured (except for trucks); (3) the tons of mill ore, concentrate, and stockpiled ore are regulated; (4) the number and extent of shovel moves are minimized; (5) the grindability of the rock is considered as well as the variable haulage cost caused by variable haulage distances and depths; and (6) the size of the shovel working area is regulated. As many as 50 alternate schedules can be produced per computer run. They are arranged in descending order starting with the best solution.

Assets acquired included 100010 of the land and coal leases and 80% of the major joint venture assets including all structures. The remaining 20% is owned by Pohang Steel Canada Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Pohang Iron Steel Co. of Korea. The Greenhills mine had been in continuous operation since 1983 and was finally closed due to bankruptcy of its majority owner on October 31, 1992.A permit to operate the Greenhills mine was issued by the British Columbia government on January 29, 1993, and Fording Coal Limited started mining operations in late February 1993.To return the Greenhills mine to profitability significant changes were required in workforce productivity, mining methods and equipment selection. These mine plan changes are designed to make the Greenhills operation competitive in world markets, provide longterm employment for the company's workforce and ensure that a secure supply of coal is available."
