This Paper will deal with Bucketwheel Suction Dredging and its particular relationship to mining applications. There will be comparisons with other methods of suction dredging and descriptions of two recent bucketwheel installations in the mining area. The Directory of World Dredging Fleets published in the `larch 1984 edition of World Dredging magazine shows that there are about 1.000 conventional Cutterhead Dredges listed throughout the world with 289 in the United States. There are 242 Bucketline Dredges listed throughout the world of which only 6 are in the United States. These figures are not completely accurate because several units are known to the author that are not on the list and, of course, there may be others.

"Textile industries use various kinds of chemicals including dyestuffs and pigments during dyeing and finishing processes. The effluent from these processes includes suspended particles, strong color, high pH and high chemical oxygen demand (COD) that are extremely toxic and make environmental hazard. Although physical, chemical, photochemical, and biological methods are available for treating such wastewater, the electrochemical technique, electrocoagulation (EC), has emerged as an efficient, simple, and cost-effective technology in the last few decades. In this study we present the applicability of EC technique for removing dye, such as direct red dye using iron electrodes, and the optimized conditions such as dye concentration, current density and pH. The degradation of dye molecules was investigated using UV-visible spectroscopy. The EC-floe was also characterized using SEM/EDS, XRD and FTIR.IntroductionWastewaters generated by textile industries contain large amounts of toxic aromatic compounds, especially azo dyes. Azo dyes and their degradation products, such as aromatic amines, are highly carcinogenic. These effluents are also responsible for causing high levels of color. The colored wastewater released into the environment is also a source for disruption of aquatic life and aesthetic pollution as well [1].In most textile industries, dyeing and finishing are the two important processes which are generally applied. These two common processes generate significant amount of wastewater, which may contain, suspended particles, high pH, strong color and high chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration [2]. Low pH and high temperature are other polluting factors from the waste water. Textile industries make use of about 10,000 dyes and pigments [3]. Disposal of these colored wastewaters poses a major problem for the industries as well as a threat to the environment. In textile industries, because of the low efficiency (60-90%) of dye fixing on textile fibers, substantial amounts of unfixed dyes are released in waste waters. The conventional method for treatment of textile wastewater was a combination of biological, physical and chemical methods [2]."

Flotation plant simulation, a relatively recent methodology in mineral processing, is defined and corresponding uses are discussed. Typical simulation structures are compared. Current problem areas exist although these are not insurmountable. Following a brief state of the art discussion, the N. I. M. simulation program is reviewed. In general, digital plant simulation is expected to be of substantial benefit in the near future.

There is currently much interest in how extraction of gold and silver from ores with acidic thiourea solution compares with extraction using alkaline cyanide solution. Agitation leaching tests were performed by the Bureau of Mines on 14 precious metal ores using sodium cyanide (?NaCN) and thiourea [(NH2)2CS) as extractants. The objective was to compare the results of the two extractants. NaCN was used at a concentration of 2 g/L with and without H202 as an oxidant. (NH2)2CS was used at concentrations of 2 and 20 gjL, and the solution potential was controlled at 390 to 420 mV standard hydrogen electrode (Eh) with Fe2(S04)3. With both reagents a.t 2 g/L extractant levels, NaCN extracted more gold and silver than (NH2liCS from all of the ores. At 20 g/L (NH2)2CS compared with 2 g/L NaCN, (NH2)2CS extracted more gold than NaCN from two ores, the same amount from one ore, and more silver from one ore. NaCN extracted more gold than (NH2 )2CS from 10 ores and more silver from 4 ores.

Even under the heavy pressure of a total preparedness program there should be a smooth flow of the right coals from mines to plants. The more than 100,000 industrial plants of the nation must he served with coal of such characteristics and qualities for their individual requirements that no loss of production due to coal failure shall occur. From time to time the Bureau of Mines has received requests from persons who wish to destroy unwanted explosives, and although the information that follows has been accumulated from sources considered reliable,4/ the. Bureau of Mines assumes no responsibility for accidents that may result from following the suggestions offered. Explosives to be destroyed may be fresh material from damaged packages, usable material for which there is no further need, or material that has deteriorated either from natural aging or from improper storage to the point where it is unfit for use.

A versatile acid leach process has been developed which is applicable to a broad range of oxide nickel ores. Inherent in this process are high recoveries of nickel and cobalt, as well as a relatively low energy consumption. These features extend the range of economic exploitation of laterite deposits to low grade limonites and to garnieritic ores not suitable for pyrometallurgical processing. Particular advantages can be realized in treating orebodies containing both limonite and garnierite and ores containing significant amounts of cobalt.

BECAUSE of the nature of the environments in which metals are handled, it is natural that gases should be suspected of intruding into metallurgical operations, there to produce effects both beneficial and detrimental. The problem of tracing and controlling such effects is often made difficult by the complexity of the conditions surrounding 'their occurrence, even though the fundamental mechanisms involved may be simple and of familiar type. Many gas-metal reactions are known to be implemented by processes of diffusion. These form a homogeneous group of phenomena which become more readily understandable when viewed together, in that the knowledge gained from one serves to interpret the next. It is the purpose of the present paper to present, by means of examples drawn from practice, a brief survey, of the ways in which gas-metal diffusion serves and obstructs the purposes of the metal-fabricating industries. The selection of the cases described was made by consulting more than thirty-six practicing experts whose combined experience provided an extensive coverage of the field and who were in a position to supply examples of occurrences of present day interest. The response was generous and it is regrettable that space permits the description of only a limited number of typical examples with but brief mention of parallel cases. THE NATURE OF GAS-METAL DIFFUSION The term "gas-metal diffusion," although commonly used, is ambiguous in so far as it implies that a definite group of substances may be identified as gases and may be expected to behave in a manner distinct from other substances in association with metals. "Gases" such as oxygen and hydrogen when diffusing through a liquid or solid metal are properly components of the liquid or solid solution; they behave as alloying elements and are not to be distinguished in their diffusion characteristics from other elements, except that each has an individual rate of diffusion. On the other hand, a number of metals in certain temperature ranges are volatile to the extent that they may appear in the form of vapor in metallurgical operations. For the sake of greater definiteness, therefore, it will be convenient to- regard as "gas-metal diffusion" any process in which the result depends upon one or more of the diffusing elements appearing, at some stage, in the gaseous state, or as a compound gas. Introduction Although gold production in British Columbia began in 1859, lode gold was not produced till 1893. Since 1900, the annual production of lode gold has fluctuated between $3,000,000 and $6,000,000. About twenty per cent of this production may be regarded as by-product gold from base metal mining. The remainder comes from a few isolated but important mines, such as the Rossland mines, Nickel Plate, Surf Inlet, Premier, Pioneer, Bralorne, Reno, and Cariboo Gold Quartz, and from several less important mines. All of the above, except Pioneer, Bralorne, Reno, and Cariboo, are approaching or have reached the point of exhaustion, but all are now receiving, under the stimulus of the. present gold-mining boom, drastic resuscitative treatment, with, in some cases, signs of resurrection. Notwithstanding this, however, the main interest at the present time is focussed on the Bridge River and Cariboo fields. Both these fields were discovered in the early 'sixties' and, apart from the Cariboo placer production, both have from time to time contributed small amounts of lode gold; but it is only during the last two years that the real possibilities of these areas were discovered. and that they began to assume the appearance of goldfields of major importance. The two fields are sorme three hundred miles distant from one another and contain deposits of distinctly different types, so that the only reason for including them in one article is the fact that they came into prominence more or less simultaneously and at a time coinciding with, but not otherwise related to, the present gold-mining boom.

Pure respirable quartz is a known pathogenic agent for lung disease. However, for mixed dusts, neither mineralogical nor in vitro cytotoxicity assays unequivocally predict the contribution of quartz to their pathogenic potential.First, although Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) and Progressive Massive Fibrosis (PMF) prevalence have been found to correlate with total respirable coal mine dust exposure, and with coal rank (Attfield and Morring, 1992), epidemiological studies generally have not found the quartz component of coal mine dust as measured by X-ray diffraction or infrared spectroscopy (each of which essentially measures the mass-percent quartz in a bulk sample) to be clear predictors of CWP prevalence or incidence (Walton et al., 1971). Second, the properties which distinguish the extreme fibrogenic potential of quartz are not revealed by conventional in vitro bioassay comparison with other silicate mineral dusts. As an example, quartz and kaolin (aluminosilicate) clay in vitro cytotoxicities are comparable for lavaged primary pulmonary macrophages.The studies discussed here address these two anomalies from a general hypothesis that the pathogenic activity of respired quartz particles is associated with properties of, and interactions with, the particle surfaces. One factor in the expression of toxic activity by a particle surface is the biological availability of that surface. Anomalous lack of correlation of disease prevalence with mass percent quartz in exposures to some mixed composition respirable-sized dusts suggests that individual particle surface features, invisible by bulk sample mass analysis, may alter the biological availability of a fraction of quartz particles in a dust. For pure-surfaced mineral particles, the comparably strong prompt membranolytic activities of quartz and kaolin in vitro suggest that upon deposition of such particles in the lung there must be other interactions with particle surfaces which distinguish quartz. This might be due to toxic surface-associated sites specific to silica, or to interactions of other sites on other mineral particles which affect the biological availability of their toxic functional groups. For example, alurninol groups on clays affect the availability or activity of adjacent silanol groups. Surface activities which distinguish quartz pathogenici ty might be manifest in one or more of the sequential interactions upon deposition in the lung; first with the pulmonary surfactant system, then with extracellular and phagolysosomal enzymatic digestive processes, or with subsequent cytotoxic processes.

FMC built its first angle bolter in 1969. This was a single mast unit which could drill holes for conventional bolts or angle holes for installing roof trusses. From this drill we learned very quickie that the mast design was an important factor to the success or failure of any angle bolter. The first mast installed on this machine (EXHIBIT 1) was fixed in length with endless chain and hydraulic motor feed. It took less than a shift underground to determine that the fixed length was not going to work. The undulating top created conditions where the mast was too long to be positioned at a 450 angle. Several mast designs were tried and discarded before we felt we had the answer to our problems. (EXHIBIT 2} We developed a mast that would extend or retract without moving the position of the drill unit. This allowed the operator to "wedge" the mast between the floor and roof before starting his drill feed. This arrangement worked exceptionally well, but unfortunately the demand, as perceived by our Sales Department, for angle bolters did not materialize. This unit became an "orphan" and was used by many coal mines until it died a natural death. FMC did not decide to re-enter this market again until 1979. At this time many coal producers were contacted to determine what features should he incorporated into a dual mast angle bolter. From this information we were able to arrive at three main areas of concern that we should consider when designing a new machine. 1. Eliminate overturning moment on drill unit. 2. Provide some sort of steel support near roof line to aid in starting a 15° hole. 3. Dual mast units need a method of raising center of mast rotation to facilitate various mining heights and still maintain a 45° angle and proper distance from rib. I would now like to discuss each of these individually. EXHIBIT 3 indicates the overturning moment resulting from the feed cylinder thrust and the reaction of the drill hit against the roof. To eliminate this moment a mast was designed using two feed cylinders mounted in the plane of the drill center line, thus removing all overturning moments on the drill unit carriage. This mast has been used extensively in vertical drilling with no downtime attributed to wear on mast guides and drill unit supports. The cylinders are designed to provide uniform thrust and feed speed throughout the total stroke. For manufacturing and economic reasons, the final mast design on the first drill was not used for this new drill. A drill steel support mounted on the mast, and positioned by a hydraulic cylinder provides the needed guidance near the roof for starting a hole at a 45° angle. (EXHIBIT 4) This support does not surround the drill steel but simple cradles the drill steel for "collaring" the hole. Once the hole is started, the support can he lowered. The support plate is hinged to allow the drill mast to pass. The advantage of having vertical motion of the center of rotation on a dual mast drill is shown in EXHIBIT 5. Following the criteria recommended by Birmingham Bolt Company, the truss bolts should he at a 45° angle and one fifth of the width of the entry from the rib. Therefore, in an entry 20 ft. wide, the hole should be drilled 4 ft. from the rib and at the 45° angle previously mentioned. With the limitations inherent to dual boom drills, that is, the masts cannot pass each other nor can one mast pass the center line of the machine even if the other is positioned out of the way, it is impossible to accommodate much variation in seam height and maintain the recommended criteria. As shown in EXHIBIT 5, a center of rotation 17 inches above the floor will start a hole 4 ft. and 45°angle at a height of 67 inches. Any height above 67 inches

The disposal of sludges and other similar industrial wastes is a major problem. Liquid wastes from industrial operations, when treated, produce significant volumes of sludge which are difficult to dispose of, because of the chemical and physical properties of the sludge. In the mining industry sludge is produced from various water treatment operations, in particular mine drainage neutralization. Waste water from coal preparation plants also produces a sludge however the sludge is in fact a slurry containing clays, coal fines and coal impurities. In many areas the disposal of these sludges is producing a serious problem. Mine drainage sludge consists of a variety of hydrous iron oxides, usually ferric oxides, contaminated with other neutralization products such as calcium sulfate. From its modest beginning in 1957 with one mill grinding section handling 3000 tpd Pima has steadily expanded. In July 1966, work was completed that allowed the concentrator to treat in excess of 18,000 tpd. Almost immediately Pima embarked on another expansion program that will increase plant capacity to 30,000 tpd during the summer of 1967. This repeated expansion has corresponded with the development of additional low-grade ore deposits and with the improved operating economics realized by handling larger masses of material. Early in the life of Pima it was known that a mineralized area was present on the flanks of the high-grade orebody which systematic drilling had shown to be a low-grade copper orebody. Many months of engineering studies revealed that this was sufficient to allow Pima to compete with other large scale, low-grade copper operations in the Southwest.

The paper explains required practice and equipment for capturing airborne fumes and particulates in hot-dip zinc galvanizing plants. An economic and technical comparison of enclosure and tank rim suction options is presented. The paper also compares the performance of various filter media in filtering fumes, to determine the effect of changes in flux as well as changes in filter finishlcoating methods. This includes a recommendation for how to achieve the best result with respect to pressure loss and cleaning behavior of the filter.

The efficient and acceptable disposal of fine coal refuse (28MxO) is one of the highest priority problems facing the coal industry today. For many years the established system for the disposal of this fine refuse slurry has been to concentrate the solids in a static thickener and pump the resulting 20-40% solids underflow to lagoons or impoundments. Although this technique has served the coal industry well, increasing environmental concerns and refuse related disasters, such as Buffalo Creek, West Virginia and Aberfan, Wales, Great Britain have resulted in federal and state regulations which now control fine refuse disposal methods. As a consequence of these regulations, the capital costs of constructing, maintaining, and operating regulatory complying impoundments has become in many cases economically unattractive. Areas processing topologies similar to those coal preparation plants of the Appalachians are particularly burdened by these regulations and are consequently turning to alternatives for handling and disposal of their fine coal refuse. The basic requirements of impoundment alternatives as defined by environmental and plant demands are: (1) A relatively solids-free liquid (1000 ppm or less) to serve as plant make-up water in a "closed circuit" system, and (2) a sufficiently dewatered solids product which can be combined with the coarse refuse to form a compactable stable land-fill.
