The rocks which cover the east flank of the South Mountain are chloritic schists typical in character. A specimen of this rock from near the Bechtel shaft, Hamilton Ban Township, Adams County, Pa., was selected and analyzed in my laboratory by Mr. C. Hanford Henderson, with the following results: Ignition,........2.740 CaO,..........7.040 SiO,,..........41.280 MgO,.......... 7.486 AI,O,,.........18.480 K,O,..........2.208 Fe,Os,.........9.440 Na,O,.........3.523 FeO,......... 8.200 100. As one penetrates the range by moving westvard, these schists are replaced either by epidotie quartz or by orthofelsite. In the former case, a belt of copper-bearing rock is traversed, but not in the latter case. Inasmuch as this junction of the chloritic schists on the southeast and orthofelsite on the northwest, separated by the epidotic quartz, is several times repeated, we find two or three copper belts arranged in general parallelism to the axis of the chain, because the copper horizon is generally at this junction. Thus, in going west from Fairfield, after entering the low spurs on the South Mountain, one is fairly within the chlorite measures. At the " Virginia Mills " a chlorite schist comes in with a dip of S. 1.5 E.-74 Half a mile up Middle Creek, large numbers of fragments of chlorite schist, decoruposed epidotic matter, and quartz are encountered. The former rock, where in place, dips E. 40" S.-57o. About 4000 feet west of the intersection of this road with the so-called Tape-Worm Railroad, near the house of one Singly, large masses of chloritie schist are found loose on the road. A hundred yards farther west, near a triangle in the road, the latter is less in quantity and much epidotic quartz appears, after which a very large display of orthofelsite succeeds on the left bank of Middle Creek. All these last-mentioned rocks, however, are in fragments. "A hierarchical four-character code designed for geological and allied data may be used to log exploration drill-holes and store the information on magnetic media. The code is intended for use in semi-free format and permits the collection of as much, or as little, data as the geologist may require for the purpose in hand. A method of data storage by variable length records is discussed.Information may be retrieved by means of a simple enquiry language. Optional output facilities could allow the retrieval of data in a form suitable for direct input to a contouring package. The enquiry parameters and interrogation program can thus provide the interface between the data bank and associated application systems."

IT is generally recognized that fluid is lost from rotary drilling mud s to permeable strata during normal drilling operations;1,2,3 but that this fluid is the filtrate from the mud, rather than the mud itself, has been shown by various workers.1,4,5 . The presence of this filtrate in oil-bearing or gas-bearing strata is undesirable and harmful. The decreased permeability of the stratum to oil effected by the presence of water has been pointed out by several investigators,6,7 and since, in the production of the reservoir fluid, the greatest pressure drop occurs immediately adjacent to the borehole, it follows that infiltered water is particularly objectionable in this region. Again, this filtrate tends to make electrical logs less reliable, since oil in the proximity of the borehole is probably flushed out to an appreciable ent by the water.8 Observation of side wall cores may be misleading for the same reason. Drill-stem tests in low-pressure areas may be of doubtful value where no oil is recovered, unless sufficient time is allowed for production of water lost from the mud. The infiltered water may hinder drilling operations by softening shales and causing sloughing; the "tight hole" occasioned by excessive deposition of filter cake in the hole is a common occurrence. The filter cake remaining on the face of the producing formation may itself sometimes be detrimental to production.9 In view of these implications of the importance of filtration of mud, an investigation was undertaken to determine the factors involved in the infiltration process, and to correlate these in such a manner that the values obtained in routine filter tests employing a conventional filter of the "wall-building tester" type,10 together with data on size of hole, drill pipe, and rate of mud circulation, could be used to estimate water loss and distance of penetration of the filtrate into strata.

"The EGAT Mae Moh coal mine is an open-cut coal mine in Thailand that produces about 16 million tons of lignite annually to generate 2,400 mw of electricity. The surface mine pit covers is 4 by 7 km (2 by 4 mi) with mining depths ranging up to 260 m (853 ft). A large pit slope is formed with the progression of the mining operation. However, massive slides in the pit slope often occur due to weak planes, such as faults and bedding, and the weak mechanical properties of the rocks. Hence, a 200-300 m (656-984 ft) boundaries of rock block including coal seams is left in front of faults in order to prevent slides and maintain the stability of the pit slope. As a result, there are significant coal reserves beneath the abandoned area along the pit slope.The focus of this paper is on the applicability and design of the highwall mining for recovering much of the coal left along the pit slope.INTRODUCTIONThe EGAT Mae Moh Mine is located about 630 km (186 mi) north of Bangkok, Thailand (see Figure 1). It is the largest coal mine in Thailand and produces about 16 million tons of lignite annually from open-cut mining (70 % of the total coal produced in Thailand). The coal is used to generate 2,400 mw of electricity at the Mae Moh power plant, which is situated near the mining area. The mine pit covers an area of 4 by 7 km (2 by 4 mi) at varied depths up to 260 m (583 ft) as shown in Figure 2. As the mining operation progresses, the pit becomes to be deeper and deeper. In the year 2035, the bottom of the pit is expected to reach depths of 500-600 m and the open-cut mining operation will be finished. The possibility of an underground mining operation is being investigated.A large pit slope is formed with the progression of open-cut mining. However, massive slides often occur in the pit slope along weak planes including faults and bedding planes due to the weak nature of the rock. As a result, 200 to 300 m (656 to 984 ft) boundaries of rock including coal seams are left in place in front of faults to prevent slides and to maintain the stability of pit slope. Moreover, the dip of the slope is less than that of the planned design. As a result, there significant coal reserves abandoned along the pit slope."

The forces of nature have concentrated sand at various geographical locations that are being mined and processed for a large variety of industrial uses. While most operations serve a number of industries, this paper deals only with the foundry requirements. The forces that have decomposed a source rock, transported this material and redeposited it, have created two general types of sand. These types are classified as the (1) Lake and Bank Sands and (2) Silica Sands. The Lake and Bank sands will contain 92 to 94% Sio2 while silica sands are in excess of 98.5% Si02 and most of the producers wash these sands to up grade their products to 99.5% or better. Included in the Lake and Bank sand would be the river sands that are used primarily for construction purposes. The Foundry Industry is broken down into three types of castings : 1. Grey Iron Foundries The grey iron castings largest market is the automotive industry in Ohio, Northern Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. These castings are poured at temperatures ranging from 2400° to 2700°F. The Silica Sands or the Lake and Bank Sands will satisfy the requirements of the grey iron castings. There are 2 ½ to three million tons per year shipped from the state of Michigan far grey iron castings by the Lake and Bank Sand Producers.

The term "konimeter" is used generally to designate a type of dust-sampling instrument that collects the dust from a small volume of air by impingement on a glass plate prepared aced with an adhesive film. The konimeter was first developed by Sir R. N. Kotze about 20 years ago and was followed a few years later by the circular-type konimeter, by which a number of samples may be collected on a glass disk. The present discussion will be confined to the circular type, as it is used most. Various techniques have been developed for using the konimeter, and many materials, such as petrolatum, mineral oil, and glycerine jelly, have been used in preparing the adhesive film. In South Africa, Australia, and Canada, where the konimeter has been employed most widely, dust samples are treated by ignition and washing before being counted. In Canada the dust samples are collected on a disk of special heat-resistant glass prepared with a film of mineral oil; the disk is then heated to a dull cherry-red in a muffle-furnace to remove the film and organic matter, cooled, and washed with a few drops of 50-percent hydrochloric acid followed by distilled water and alcohol, and then heated again to remove residue left by evaporation of the alcohol. After this treatment, the dust samples are counted under a magnification of 150 diameters with dark field illumination.

Goldfields Abosso Goldfields Limited (AGL) is a Ghanaian registered company that owns and operates the Damang Gold Mine. Gold Fields Ghana Holdings Limited holds a 71.1 per cent interest in AGL. The Damang concession held by Gold Fields Ghana Holdings Limited covers a total area of 271 km2 located 40 km north of the town of Tarkwa in the south-western part of Ghana. Gold Fields as a company registered on the New York Stock Exchange is legally obliged to be SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley). Sarbanes-Oxley Section 404 (SOX404) is on management assessment of internal controls. The Mineral Resource Management (MRM) function of AGL manages three Prospecting Licenses and two mining licences. At least ten pits/prospects are scattered along the two limbs of the Damang Anticline and have two main types of mineralisation notably Paleoplacer and Hydrothermal. Thus SOX404 procedures are put in place to treat each mineralisation type in the best way for reliable resource outputs and estimates. Generating auditable resources for AGL is a prime but most important function of MRM. Thus important checks are built and designed to ensure that all relevant geological and geostatistical inputs conform to procedures outlined under SOX404 requirements. More importantly sign offs are designed to ensure that technical personnel involved in all aspects of resource and reserve generation are satisfied and can be held accountable.

Much has been contributed to the Transactions of the Institute concerning the construction and operation of American blast-furnares ; but the following compilation is offered as possibly furnishing additional information upon the general features, dimensions, locations, capacities, etc., of the blast-furnaces of the United States; while, incidentally, the ores upon which they rely are noted in a general way. The paper is presented chiefly as a compilation, and the figures given are selections from most reliable sources, or averages calculated from official statistics, placed for convenient reference, with a view of assisting those who consult the Transactions in determining the present relative merits and importance of various sections of the country. The scope of the paper has been restricted to as few topics as possible, and all the details of special plants, or notable outputs have been ignored. While every effort has been made to give correct figures and data, the changes which are constantly taking place in the iron-producing industry, will, undoubtedly, by the time the paper is in print, develop some errors. It is difficult to determine which of the blast-furnace plants of the country should or should not be considered as upon the active list. A number which have not been in operation for years are still reported as active, some of which will scarcely be put in blast again, and others are handicapped so that they can only operate in times of abnormal profits. It is therefore scarcely probable that there are over 600 blast-furnaces in the United States which can properly be considered as active; but so many considerations affect the various plants, that, it being impossible to determine the exact number, I have relied upon the annual reports presented to the American Iron and Steel Association. Concerning the number of plants which could be stricken from the list, the Secretary of this Association says: "In January last (1885) we enumerated 669 furnaces, which included many stacks which had not been in blast for a very long time, and others which could not be operated except during short periods of exceedingly high prices for pig iron. We have gone over this list very carefully and have eliminated 10 anthracite, 19 bituminous, vol. xiv.—36

The report on cut and cover construction as assembled by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development covered 17 different countries based on a total of just under 400 individual replies of which about 30% of the replies were from the United States. In general, the review of replies to the questionnaire led to the impression that cut and cover construction is a very inadequate method which needed many improvements. This unfavorable judgment, however, resulted in the manner in which questions were asked rather than in the method itself, It can be concluded that the cut and cover construction method has proved itself as an excellent method and that it has reached a high degree of technological perfection, but inadequacies stilt exist, and for purposes of complete evaluation, comparisons with mining tunnelling methods should be carried out. The principal problem in cut and cover construction is the interaction during construction between the construction process and the existing use of the surface and subsurface environment. The greatest impediments to cut and cover construction have little to do with the physical works being constructed, but more with creating a site in which the work can be performed. Utility relocation, traffice maintenance, and protection of existing structures are major problems for the construction contractor, and too frequently receive insufficient attention in preconstruction planning and design. WHAT are known as insulating firebrick are lightweight firebrick with low thermal conductivity designed primarily for use in direct contact with furnace gases. These are a recent development in the refractories industry, and are really an outgrowth of the type of insulating brick suitable for use behind refractory walls developed by the insulation manufacturers. To differentiate between these two types of brick, the manufacturers have recently agreed upon the use of the term "Insulating Firebrick" to apply to the type of brick suited for use in direct contact with furnace gases, and the term "Insulating Brick" for the type suitable for use behind refractory walls. Insulation was applied to steam pipes as far back as 1900. This was a low-temperature insulation, the most common type being magnesia blocks. The next development was applying insulation to the outside of furnace walls, a service which necessitated an insulating material of higher temperature resistance. Natural diatomaceous earth, both in the powdered and brick form, was used; this was efficient and is still used extensively for backing up refractory walls where the inner surface temperature of the insulation does not exceed 1600° F.

The effects of process variables such as solution chemistry, flocculent type and dosage, intensity and duration of mixing, and solids type and concentration, on the performance of flocculation/clarification/thickening processes are described. System response is evaluated in terms of the specific effects on floc settling, supernatant clarity and sediment compressibility. The implications of these results with respect to industrial practice are discussed and general guidelines for direct application to plant design and operation are suggested.

A three-dimensional photoelastic study was made to determine the stress state around the wall and bottom of a wellbore due to fluid pressure within the wellbore and unequal principal geostatic stresses. Models simulating the wellbore were made from a phthalic anhydride-cured epoxy resin. The frozen stress technique of three-dimensional photoelastic-ity was used to determine the stresses within the model. Two separate problems were solved: (1) hydrostatic pressure on all sides of the model with the exception of the inside of the hole, and (2) uniaxial compression perpendicular to the center line of the hole. The results are presented in the form of contour curves for each stress component. The curves cover a region which extends several hole radii from the bottom and wall of the hole. By proper use of these results, the state of stress may be calculated for any point on the wall or bottom of the hole, as well as for any point within the material that surrounds the hole. A systematic method is given for calculating these stress components for any combination of fluid pressure within the wellbore and system of unequal principal geostatic stresses, provided one of the principal geostatic stresses is parallel with the wellbore. The results show that stresses around the wall and bottom of a wellbore, induced by an uneyual system of principal geostatic stresses, are appreciably different from those induced by geostatic stresses that are hydrostatic. For uneyual principal geostatic stresses, the experimentally determined stresses on the wall of the hole several radii from the bottom are in good agreement with the stresses calculated by elastic theory. INTRODUCTION Interest in the problem of determining the stresses around and near the bottom of a wellbore, due to geostatic loading and fluid pressure within the wellbore, originated in the petroleum industry. The stresses on the wall of the wellbore are of interest due to their relation to lost circulation during drilling, the fracturing of formations during squeeze cementing and hydraulic fracturing of producing formations. The stresses on the bottom of the hole are of interest to the drilling segment of the industry because to produce a hole in the earth it is necessary to remove material from the bottom of the hole. This removal of material is produced by structural failure of the rock, whatever the criterion for failure may be. Cunningham and Eeninkl have shown that for certain conditions the effect on drilling rate of the bottom-hole stresses caused by a hydrostatic overburden pressure is small compared to other effects. This question, however, needs further experimental and analytical investigation. Much information concerning the stresses on the walls of wellbores has been published considering both equal and unequal principal geostatic stresses. The problem of determining the stresses around the bottom of the wellbore is considerably more complicated. However, previous investigators have obtained numerical and experimental solutions to the problem for equal principal geostatic stresses. whitworth2 and woods3 have obtained numerical solutions. word415 obtained a three-dimensional photoelastic solution, Durelli and Deily 6 obtained surface stresses only by photoelastic means, and Cheatham and Wilhoit7 determined the stresses around the bottom of a short cylindrical cavity. While Miles and McGuire, Harrison and Kieschnick and Hubbert and Willis 10 obtained the stresses on the wall of a wellbore for unequal principal geostatic stresses, they did not concern themselves with the stresses near the bottom of the hole. The estimates made by Hubbert and Willis of the differences between the principal geostatic stresses indicate that, to obtain a satisfactory solution for the stresses around the bottom of a wellbore, unequal principal geostatic stresses should be considered. Mantoverde is a heap leach-SX-EW plant that was commissioned in December 1995 at a production rate of 42,130 tonnes of copper per year and 5.4 million tonnes of ore per year. Copper production was steadily increased reaching a maximum of 62,239 tonnes in 2012 for an ore throughput of 10,5 million tonnes. In order to get these production and throughput rates, a number of changes have been made in the metallurgical parameters of the plant operation since the start up, among them particle size, heap height, acid addition distribution in curing and leaching solution, leach cycles and pad type. Most of the modifications have been implemented after carrying out extensive column test work programs. The modifications implemented and the results obtained, as well as the test work programs carried out, are discussed in this paper.

Cominco is making substantial savings in secondary breaking by replacing dynamite with a new nitrate-based explosive. Compareo with dynamite. the new explosive, known locally as "Fine NCN," is significantly cheaper, more effective and safer to use. It also works better than prilled NCN, which is unsatisfactory for secondary blasting because of inadequate sensitivity, low strength and awkward handling properties. A simple apparatus has been devised for pulverizing prilled NCN to a fineness practical for effective secondary breaking. Blasting systems using cheap detonating cord for initiation have been developed.

Because of a shortage of diamonds for the drilling industry in the 1970s, efforts were made to develop synthetic diamonds. The resulting development of polycrystalline diamond compacts (PDC) enabled the evolution of a new generation of rotary-drilling drag bits. Bits based on PDC cutters were very successful in drilling soft, abrasive and medium strength rocks. However, because of their thermal instability, they failed rapidly when drilling hard rocks. Thermally stable diamond (TSD) was then developed for hard-rock drilling. The rate of penetration (ROP) and bit life significantly influence the drilling cost. The ROP and the life of the TSD bits or cutters are affected by a number of complex factors. However, in laboratory testing and infield operations, the principal factors that need to be considered in predicting drilling and wear rates are bit design characteristics, bit operating parameters and the characteristics of the penetrated rock. These characteristics are comprehensively reviewed for both laboratory and field drilling results using TSD bits. Optimization of these parameters increases the drilling rate, prolongs the bit life and reduces the drilling cost.

This paper deals with the effect of various bit geometric parameters on failure characteristics of rock material. Improvement of rock cutting efficiency of continuous mining machines has been an interesting research topic for the last few decades. In the current study, an automated rotary rock cutting simulator, duplicating a continuous miner, was utilized to study these parameters in the laboratory. Improvement of bit performance in terms of its life, cutting efficiency, dust production and energy consumption has drawn wide spread attention over the years. Research shows that optimizing bit parameters can result in efficient fragmentation of rock. Indiana limestone rock material was utilized in this study while bit tip angle, bit tip size, bit spacing, depth of cut and cutting velocity of rotary drum were varied to investigate the failure characteristics. The cutting pressure, penetrating pressure and the depth of cut were monitored on the simulator during the cutting process. Air borne dust and settled dust were measured for each experiment. Then, the specific airborne dust and specific energy were determined for the each type of bit. Triaxial tests were carried out to correlate the failure angle of the rock in static case to dynamic cutting process failure. The physical and mechanical properties of the rock were also determined in order to assess their influence on the wear characteristics of each bit.

The unprecedented high price of zinc ore prevailing through the early months of 1915 caused great activity in the Joplin district of Missouri. The Media mill is conspicuous as one of the first of the new "big mills" of the district. The mill was built over a mine previously worked but abandoned in 1912 because of the leanness of the ore and the large quantity of water encountered. The ore prices prevailing—$100 a ton in June, 1915, as against $50 in 1912-—favored the new undertaking. The mill was designed for good recovery so that it might operate in times of depression. In design and equipment, the mill is exclusively local in conception and construction. Former Exploitation The tract of land is a part of the large Guinn holdings; 70 acres are comprised in this particular lot, which is situated just a mile north of the center of Webb City on the Alba line of the Southwest Missouri Electric Railway. The ore lies 242 ft. below the surface at the top of the knoll which is surrounded by the well known properties: Black Cat, Ground Floor, Florence, Hurry-Up, Electrical, and Mercantile. Since the abandonment, in 1913, of the Yellow Dog a bit farther to the north, the Black Cat, Ground Floor, and Florence workings had been flooded. However, as there was no cut through from this side into the area it was proposed to exploit, it was thought that moderate pumping facilities would take care of the water. Three shafts had already been sunk to the ore horizon during the previous operations; the ground was connected by wide drifts and possibly 10 acres mined out, principally about the two southerly shafts which at surface are 8 and 13 ft. lower, respectively, than the collar of the shaft at which the new mill was built. The former mill on the lease was known as the Bohemian Girl. This mill, built in 1910, was removed after some 3 years' work.
