A prerequisite of this process is the need for close interaction between geologists, mining engineers and metallurgists to facilitate an understanding of the orebody based on the parameters impacting on each discipline. Simullaneous ultrasonic attenuation measurements of both quasishear waves propagating in single cryslals of aluminum indicate that, in the undeformed annealed state, the dislocation density is generally not uniform on all slip systems. Change oof attenuation measurements made during plastic defortnation of crystals , which possessed specific orientations ideal for studying the orientation dependence of dislocation damping, indicate that, for low strain levels, dislocation motion occurs on additional slip systems besides the primary one, even for crystals oriented for plastic deformation by single slip. THE sensitivity of internal friction measurements permits such measurements to be used successfully in studying the deformation characteristics of metal crystals. On the basis of experimental observations, T. A. Read1 was the first to associate internal friction losses with various dislocation mechanisms. Since that time further work2-' has been performed and a dislocation damping theory has been formulated by Granato and Lucke.6 In the amplitude independent region, this theory predicts the attenuation a to be dependent on an orientation factor O, a dislocation density A, and an average loop length L. if is a constant, independent of crystallographic orientation. For a given crystallographic orientation, changes in dislocation density and loop length give rise to the observed attenuation changes accompanying plastic deformation. The Granato-Liicke theory suggests the investigation of the orientation dependence of attenuation measurements in hopes of obtaining information to separate dislocation motion losses from other losses.7 An experimental study of the orientation dependence of attenuation in undeformed annealed single crystals should yield an insight into the uniformity of dislocation distribution throughout the entire specimen. A similar study on crystals plastically deformed in a prescribed fashion should give information about the alterations in the dislocation distribution on the slip systems activated during plastic deformation. The possible modes of elastic waves which can be propagated in aluminum,8 copper,9 zinc,10 and other hexagonal metals" have been calculated. Associated with each mode of wave propagation are dislocation damping orientation factors, which are based on the resolution of the stress field of that particular elastic wave onto the various operative slip systems in the material. These orientation factors have also been calculated as a function of crystallographic orientation in the papers cited above. Einspruch12 obtained agreement between predicted and observed attenuation values of longitudinal and shear waves in (100) and (110) directions of two undeformed aluminum crystal cubes. He ascribed the slight deviations between predicted and observed values to a nonuniform dislocation distribution, or to other loss mechanisms. In shear deformation of zinc crystals, Alers2 found that the attenuation of shear waves having their particle displacements in the slip plane was very sensitive to the deformation, while the longitudinal wave attenuation was affected only when the wave propagation direction was not normal to the slip plane. Using aluminum single crystals oriented for single slip, Hikata3 et al. found that during tensile deformation the change of attenuation of the shear wave (actually quasishear) having particle displacements nearly perpendicular to the primary slip direction exhibited the easy-glide phenomena, while longitudinal waves did not. Similar results were reported by Swanson and Green5 during compressive deformation of aluminum crystals. These results are in qualitative agreement with the calculated orientation factors for specimens of this orientation. In well-annealed, undeformed aluminum crystals, the damping is expected to be due to dislocations vibrating on all twelve slip systems. The orientation factors associated with this initial damping will be designated by O2 and O3, where a, represents the average orientation factor for the slow shear (or quasishear) wave and O3 represents the average orientation factor for the fast shear (or quasishear) wave. The calculation of these values for aluminum crystals by Hinton and Green8 shows that they vary very little as a function of crystallographic orientation—at most, by a factor of 2.47. If the dislocation density and loop length are uniform, then in the initial undeformed state, Here the subscript zero refers to the initial value of the attenuation. Also for aluminum, the calculations8 show that the orientation factors for primary slip only, associated with each shear wave, exhibit a sharp minimum for particular crystallographic orientations. A composite plot of the two shear wave orientation factors for primary slip only is shown in Fig. 1. Since these orientation factors are associated with dislocation motion occurring on the primary slip system only, the proper condition to check these factors might be attained by slightly deforming a single crystal oriented for primary slip. The Bureau of Mines investigated the use of dilute polymer in brine solutions to increase the efficiency of air in gas flooding model oil reservoirs. Slugs (0.23 pore volume) of 500 ppm polyacrylamide were injected into a model, consisting of a high- and a low-permeability core, that had been previously gas flooded to residual oil. Gas flooding was then resumed. Of the total gas volume injected, the percentage entering the high-permeability zone was greatly reduced after polymer injection but remained unchanged when slugs of water without polymer were used.

The need to comply with environmental regulations and increase production has resulted in modifications to the East Penn blast furnace operation. Changes made include furnace design modifications, closed loop water cooling with heat recovery, automated weighing and charging, automated tuyere punching, ammonia scrubbing of tail gases and improved metal and slag handling to minimize environmental impact. These changes have resulted in a marked increase in yearly production and compliance with many of the air, water and solid waste regulations.

Methane predrainage from coal seams in the Western Area of the U.K. has been practiced over the past decade. The differing reasons for the practice include the controlling of gas emission rates in coal headings required to win out coal faces and also the need to control the gas emission rates in the roadways of retreat faces in order to comply with the statutory requirements. There are some similarities with predrainage experience in the Bulli Seam NSW. The several case studies highlight the varying conditions in the Western Area coalfield where the use of predrainage was Required.

Tars paper is intended only to give a preliminary account of experiments made, and conclusions reached, concerning the treatment of certain refractory low-grade gold-ores, the profitable reduction of which may furnish a useful guide to the solution of similar mining and metallurgical problems, not only in the gold-bearing belt of the Southern United States, but perhaps in other regions also. It must be regarded as simply a ?report of progress," preceding a more elaborate and conclusive report of regular practice. The mines of the Hillabee Gold Mining Co. are located upon what is generally known locally as Hog Mountain, on the northern edge of Tallapoosa county, Ala., about 15 miles from Goodwater and 14 miles from Alexander City, stations on the Central of Georgia Railway. Gold has been known since 1839 to exist on this property, where it was discovered in that year by a man named Johnston. The property was worked for placer-gold by the old miners, and there are now the remains of four attempts to operate it by stamp-mill and plate-amalgamation. The present owners purchased it in 1896, and since that time they have experimented at frequent intervals, in order to devise a process that would satisfactorily recover the gold. In 1903 regular operations were begun. Geologically, the mountain consists of an intrusion of what has been pronounced true granite in altered sedimentary slates. The cooling of the granite produced shrinkage-cracks, which have become veins. There is considerable question as to the period of the slate formation; but it is undoubtedly, in my opinion, of Carboniferous age. An alternative development drilling strategy to the one currently in use at an open pit mine was investigated using geostatistics for a portion of the pit. The massive orebody, the 3-D nature of the problem, and the location of ultimate pit limit in the study area all created some unique problems in devising the development drilling strategy. Rather than using confidence interval of the global reserve estimate as the main criterion for development drilling, the confidence interval of short and medium range mine planning blocks was used as the objective. Based on somewhat arbitrarily selected level of confidence, the results from the study showed that a total of 50 diamond drillholes (DDHs) rather than the planned 62 DDHs is sufficient in the study area, if the selected confidence levels are acceptable to the management. The paper also emphasizes the importance of particular objectives being used in development drilling and how they influence the "optimal" placement of the development drillholes.

Results of a preliminary study of the ammoniacal leaching of covellite (CuS) in an aqueous oxidizing system in the presence of a non-miscible organic sulfur solvent are described. Up to 60% of the sulfur can be recovered from the solvent as elemental sulfur 1 while achieving high degrees of solubilization of the mineral. The effects of temperature, particle size, oxygen pressure, ammonia concentration and ammonium ion concentration on the degree of sulfur recovery were investigated. Maximum recoveries were achieved at moderate temperatures and in well-buffered systems, with a large excess ammonia concentration. Oxygen pressure and particle size were found to have little effect on fractional recovery of sulfur. A simple empirical model based on electrochemical theory correlating the effects of some of the parameters cont-rolling the degree of sulfur recovery is presented. The results of this work also confirm that in any proposed reaction mechanism for the oxidative ammoniacal leaching of copper sulfides, the primary oxidation product of the sulfide ion in elemental sulfur.

Different parts of the world in which mineral separation by flotation is practiced experience vastly different natural temperatures, and in some districts there is a big difference between summer and winter temperatures. It will be shown in this paper that the temperature is of considerable importance where it is desired to separate pyrite or arsenopyrite from other minerals. It is probable that some of the differences obtained in the flotation of these minerals at plants working under otherwise similar conditions are due to temperature variations. The influence of temperature on the flotation of galena, chalcopyrite and sphalerite by xanthates is less marked than its influence on pyrite flotation. Experimental Method The methods used have been described previously.l-4 In each test the clean mineral specimen was immersed in a solution prepared by adding the reagents in the following order: (1) sodium carbonate and hydrochloric acid as necessary to buffer the solution and to give approximately the pH value desired, (2) sodium cyanide, (3) copper sulphate, (4) ethyl xanthate, followed by (5) a final adjustment of pH value. After ½ hr. the mineral was tested for a xanthate film by bringing a bubble of air into apparent contact with the submerged polished surface. If true contact (spreading) was not obtained within ½ min. and after cleaning the surface by wiping with a small linen pad, it was concluded that the adsorption of a xanthate film had been prevented. Following the method already described (ref. 2), curves have been constructed such that for a solution composition corresponding to any point below the curve, contact between mineral and air is possible, whereas for a solution composition corresponding to any point above the curve, contact is impossible.

We can confidently predict such obvious long-term trends affecting the minerals industry as - increasing consumption, exhaustion of easily discovered near-surface ores, and sharp limitations upon open pit mining by environmental considerations. There- fore, we must intensify the exploration for, and the development and exploitation of, deep bodies of potash and other ores. This paper examines the state of the art of the search for, and the evaluation of, potash from both a geological bias and a mining practicability. The use of indirect geological methods and geophysical techniques, followed by expensive deep drilling, are the conventional approach to evaluation and development of mining plans. The geologist and the geophysicist will have to find ways to perform both of these tasks better and cheaper.

GALFAN, the Zn-5% Al-mischmetal hot-dip galvanizing alloy is coated onto steel sheet, wire, and tube using high-speed continuous galvanizing lines. Factors critical to producing high quality GALFAN are reviewed, The relationship between minimum mischmetal content in the GALFAN alloy and furnace dewpoint will be described. The relationship between peak annealing temperature and furnace dewpoint will also be shown. Typical suategies for operating multi-purpose hot-dip galvanizing lines including GALFAN will be described. A recent development has allowed preparation of steel smp for GALFAN coating using aqueous fluxes rather than high temperature annealing. This allows production of GALFAN-coated smp without over-ageing of the steel, and allows high steel strengths and hardnesses to be obtained. The principles of this process will be described.

APOCRYPHAL, no doubt, but widely entertained is the proposition that top-flight mining geologists never agree with each other on anything. Being rugged individualists, they frequently seem intolerant of opinions that conflict with their own. However, one may suspect that controversy is often more apparent than real. For example, at last summer's meeting of the American Mining Congress, Ira B. Joralemon and Reno H. Sales, discussing "Mining Geology, Today and Tomorrow," seemed to be in serious disagreement over various phases of the subject; but much of this arises from the different angles of approach of the two distinguished and successful ore finders.

One of the most difficult places to ventilate in any mine is the working face area. With an everchanging configuration, continual modification and extension to the ventilation system is necessary to maintain an adequate supply of fresh air and to avoid mixing and recirculation in the face area. In coal mines, methane emissions and high dust levels as coal is broken and removed from the face area can produce unhealthy and dangerous conditions if ventilation is not adequately monitored.

A strong step towards acknowledgement of mining as a skilled trade has been taken by the Tintic Division of Kennecott Copper Corp. In May 2 ceremonies, a pilot program was signed into force which, possibly for the first time in US history, recognizes mining as an apprentice trade and grants journeyman status to those who complete the prescribed training sequence. The apprenticeship standards, hammered out after months of consultation between management, labor, and government, are presently limited only to underground hard-rock mining and only within Kennecott's Tintic Division, but the architects of the program are confident that the concept will spread-first to other underground operations where miners desire documented evidence of their special skills, then to open-pit and soft-rock operations.

[One of the earliest records of pillar removal can be found in the 16th Chapter of Judges in the Old Testament. Here we read where the mighty Sampson removed the pillars from beneath the prison house causing the collapse of the structure resulting in his own death along with the deaths of the 3,000 Philistine occupants. Our problems at the Mi Vida Mine differ somewhat from those of Sampson of old, in that it is our aim first to remove the pillars and get out from under the back before the "house falls in" and, secondly, to remove the pillars without the lose of a single life or without even a single casualty. This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report describes a chromatographic method that is used for rapid field determinations of carbon dioxide in natural gas streams at a USBM helium production facility. The method employs a commercially available portable gas chromatograph that is equipped with a 10-m fused-silica capillary column coated with a porous polymer. The instrument operating parameters permit determinations to be performed over a concentration range of 10 ppm to 10 pct with a frequency of 20 samples/h. The speed at which determinations can be performed is an important factor when evaluating efficiency or troubleshooting processes at the helium facility.

An increasing number of gold and silver mining operations are employing cyanide solutions to effectively dissolve silver and gold from finely disseminated ores. Many of these operations use small, packaged processing systems like the State of Maine filter system, which employs zinc precipitation of gold and silver. Solution-clarifying filters in these systems become blinded with calcium carbonate (CaC03) scale and require frequent (every 2 to 10 days) dismantling of the filter units for acid cleaning, This is a hazardous operation as it is not compatible with the alkaline cyanide leach solutions and may result in the evolution of toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) gas during cleaning and during any accidental acid spill. The Bureau of Nines has investigated an alternative, nonacidic method of cleaning blinded State of Maine filters that employs ethylene- diamine-tetraacetic-acid (EDTA) type chelating agents to dissolve the scale. In situ cleaning of a 150-st/d State of Maine filters with EDTA- type chelating agents was successfully demonstrated. Greater than 90 pct of the CaC03 scale was removed in about 10 min with circulation of 31 L of 2.5-pct-EDTA solution through the filter unit. The EDTA cleaning method not only eliminates the cyanide hazard in filter cleaning but is advantageous from the standpoint of operating costs and productivity.
