Production blasting of Dc Beers Consolidated Mines Limited, Koffiefontein and Finsch Mines involves both uphole trough rings of 9 to I I holes and near vertical 360 degree compound rings of 42-54 holes. The rate of production from these stages is dependent upon being able to achieve a specified fragmentation size range and this has driven the derivation of blasting practices to consistently achieve this target fragmentation. At the Dutoitspan Mine, in Kimberley, where mining of the kimberlite pipe is by block caving, 100 per cent extraction of the undercut level by ring blasting is essential. If this is not achieved, pillars are formed which not only inhibit the efficient initiation of the caving process, but also concentrates load onto the extraction level, causing damage to draw points and pillars. These two case studies demonstrate the importance of achieving optimum blasting performance for downstream mining efficiency; ie fragmentation for increased productivity at Koffiefontein Mine and 100 per cent undercut extraction for efficient initiation of the caving process at the Dutoitspan Mine. The case studies also serve to highlight the long road towards blast optimisation taken by De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd (Koffiefontein. Finsch, Premier and Kimberley Mines) since 1989.

The operation described in-this paper will be confined to the Nemacolin Mine of The Buckeye Coal company, Nemacolin, Pennsylvania.' This mine is-located on the Monongahela River approximately sixty miles south of Pittsburgh. The mining is in the Pittsburgh seam that has an average thickness of 88 to 90 inches. The current practice is to mine approximately 80 inches, leaving 8 to 10 inches of roof coal. All of the coal produced is used solely for by-product coking by the parent Youngstown Sheet & Tube Company, Youngstown, Ohio. Eight to ten inches of top coal are left by the miners to prevent air slacking of the draw slate. In addition, this top coal which will float at the washing gravity has a very high ash and sulphur content, and when mined, seriously affects the quality of the clean coal product.

Early in my term of office it was announced that my Presidential Address would make particular reference to the subject of Mine Taxation in Canada. With this purpose in view there was drafted a Balance Sheet and Earnings' Statement of a Gold Mining Company. This in turn was submitted to the Dominion Income Tax Authorities in Ottawa and to the Minister of. Mines of each of the several Provinces of Canada. The response to the invitation was not as complete as we had hoped it would be, but the figures that were obtained will be presented during the present meeting, and they constitute, I hope, a sufficient basis for extended study and additional enquiry during the year to come ( 1) . In the form letter that accompanied our request to have the submitted earnings assessed, I made the following assertion: "In this work we have three objects in mind. 1.--We will get direct comparison between the different Provinces in Canada. 2.-We will in this way educate our members concerning taxation as it affects the mining industry. 3.-We will publish the details as to how the assessment is calculated by each body, so that a Mine Manager in the most remote district will have a ready reference to guide him in his annual return to the taxing bodies. As things stand, there is no intention of making this a basis for a critical attack on the present rates assessed. It is intended as an authoritative summary of actual conditions as they presently exist".

The Pseudo capacitance of layered type Mn02 electrode material for electrochemical capacitors (EC's) was investigated. MnO2 was synthesized in our laboratory. Mn02 was prepared from heating of KMn04 at 300°C in air. Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) experiments were carried out using three electrode system, Saturated calomel electrode as reference electrode, platinum mesh as a counter electrode, and MnOz composite material mounted in a platinum mesh used as a working electrode. Two kinds of composite working electrode materials were used, one was mixture of MnOz and 25 wt% acetylene black, while the other was MnOz, 25 wt% acetylene black and 25 wt% carbon. All the experiments were carried out at 25OC. A maximum specific capacitance of 130 Fig and 118 Fig were observed at the scan rate of 2 mV/s and 20 mV/s respectively in 1M KC1 for composite electrode made with carbon. Results obtained in this study are compared with that of other electrode materials.

After stating the advantages of the magnetic roasting technique as applied to iron ores, the authors report on technological research by I R S I D * in the field of magnetic roasting in fluid-bed furnaces This investigation was conducted first on an experimental two stage fluid-bed furnace which processed permanently 100-200 kg/h of ore, then on a three stage fluid-bed furnace with 1-2 t/h working capacity and at last on a 250 t/day pilot furnace The specific features of the IRSID process comprise - on the one hand, using special burners in the roasting reactor thereby ensuring a high production rate of the furnace - on the other hand, using a heat-exchanger where the preheating and cooling stages of fluidized ore are associated, so as to allow an efficient and simple cooling of both roasted ore and waste gases flowing out of the roasting reactor, thereby supplying heat to the crude ore and combustion air for the reactor burners Starting in 1965 the operation of the 250 t/day pilot plant at the Bazailles mine gave IRSID the opportunity of improving the conveying appliances and adapting them to the process, while perfectly confirming the metallurgical results obtained under ideal laboratory conditions

The theory that maintaining a high back-pressure on the oil sand lowers the viscosity of the oil has been generally accepted. The theory has also been advanced that lower viscosity permits the oil to be moved through the sand to the well at an expenditure of less gas per barrel of oil than would otherwise be required. It seems reasonable to assume that production of oil at the minimum gas-oil ratio will result in a greater ultimate recovery of oil. During the past five years the writer has acquired data on thousands of tests made on wells to determine the best rate at which to produce them. In the majority of cases reduction in back-pressure did not definitely increase the gas-oil ratio. The information obtained from these tests has raised doubt in the mind of the writer as to the correctness of the theory that lowered viscosity results in lower gas-oil ratios and in higher ultimate recovery of oil. The reasons that explain the results obtained in these tests cannot yet be definitely stated, but the hypothesis is being tentatively assumed that there are other factors which outweigh the influence of viscosity. Energy in Gas Moves Oil to Well The general opinion is that in most cases it is the energy in the gas that moves the oil to the well. In wells flowing naturally it is also the energy in the gas that lifts the oil to the surface. In a flowing well, there are two very distinct operations: 1. Moving the oil through the sand to the well. 2. Lifting the oil to the surface. The more important function of the gas is that of moving the oil to the well. Means for lifting the oil can always be found once it has been delivered to the well. In spite of many investigations of the occlusion of hydrogen in iron, the nature of the process and the reasons for the accompanying effects upon the metal are still open questions. This is in large part due to three causes: (1) the difficulty of obtaining iron of adequate purity as starting material; (2) the occurrence of allotropic transformations, which complicate the effects; and (3) the fact that the body-centered cubic modification does not lend itself readily to crystallographic investigation. The present paper attempts a critical review and correlation of the somewhat scattered and disconnected existing observations, and an experimental determination of the extent to which the conclusions that appear to follow from these are applicable to iron of really high purity, studied under well-defined conditions. Review Although only a comparatively few investigations have so far been made on the pure system iron-hydrogen, there is a much larger volume of literature which throws some light on the problem but falls short of a place in the systematic investigations, either because no attempt was made to measure equilibrium conditions or because the metal used was not iron or the gas not pure hydrogen. Such results have been variously dismissed in the past as of no importance, or as too complicated to try to explain; or they have been explained in terms of any of a dozen or more pictures, each of which is contradicted by data from other sources. The present importance of these data thus arises from their very mass and diversity, which present a picture of occlusion as a phenomenon whose variability cannot be ignored. We have attempted to organize the literature into groups comprising similar experiments or data leading to similar conclusions, thus of necessity sacrificing accuracy of historical order. The Quioma Mine is located along the axis of the Cordillera Oriental, 130 km southeast of Cochabamba, South Central Bolivia. Silver, lead, zinc, antimony, and gold have been intermittently produced from veins in the Quioma area since Colonial times. Mineralization occurs within steeply dipping fissure veins transecting moderately folded Lower Ordovician sediments. Tectonic activity is early to mid-Tertiary and the vein system parallels the fold axis of a major northwest-southeast striking, doubly plunging anticline. Vein sets occur within a 2 km wide band over a strike distance of 13 km along the northeast limb of the anticline. Economic mineralization occupies syntectonic pre-mineral fault zones developed in more competent stratigraphis units of Lower Ordovician clastic sediments. Veins average 55 cm in width, although mineralized structures up to 3 m wide with a known strike length of several hundred meters have been mined. Mineralization consists of siderite, argentifferous galena, sphalerite, and quartz, with minor amounts of chalcopyrite, barite, and bournonite. Pyrite is rare except at the Boston vein where it occurs with stibnite that contains trace amounts of gold. A marked characteristic of veins in the district is evidence of repeated stages of movement during mineralization. Intrusive rocks are rare in the Quioma area. Narrow porphyritic dikes of Andesitic composition averaging 1 m in thickness have been observed. These dikes occasionally show a close spatial relationship to the veins and are often kaolinized and carbonitized. Vein and dike contacts are sharp and alteration does not appear to extend into the wall rock. Mineral zoning is suggested by antimony mineralization observed in peripheral areas of the anticline.

The critical distance determination test through direct recording for the mine in Phase 03 was carried out in January 2024, and in it the vibration and pressure models were obtained for the Sedimentary breccia unit. The method of obtaining the records is based on the capture of individual pressure waves generated by distant loads, sequenced in periods of 600 ms for easy identification. The test set up corresponds to a variation of that used to obtain the vibration model, and uses 08 wells for loads and 04 for instrumentation. The results apply a safety factor of 1.2 and 1.5, being 16,000 PSI and 13,250 PSI respectively. The values are valid for any distance greater than 5.5 m, this being the minimum established between wells for loads according to the configuration defined in the field, also considering that in 5.0 m of instrumentation the section of the drill hole with the sensor called S1 collapsed. The results of the analysis of the test, generated with Heavy Anfo 82 explosive, with a final density of 1.15 g/cc, are presented. The results of the modeling and generation of the graphs and tables presented show behavior in line with the concept of scaled distance. It is important to consider that in water conditions there is a high impact by the condition, which causes the records to be higher than those expected in dry conditions and present less variability. It is for the above reason that the row corresponding to distance with safety factor 1.5 is declared valid. The results are only valid for the rock analyzed, whose medium is homogeneous and constant in terms of lithological composition and that present similar resistance characteristics, fracture frequency and water table levels. As future steps, the objective is to quantify the increase in pressure generated between wells by analyzing time and sequence factors. This analysis aims to explain the occurrence of dynamic pressure events in areas where critical safety distances are observed.

Deposition velocities play an important role in many fields of engineering and an impressive range of measured data has accumulated in the literature. Numerous workers have addressed the problems that are associated with the prediction of deposition velocity because of its particular relevance to the design of pipelines and pumping stations. However, despite this extensive effort, the calculation of friction heads still requires reference to experimentally based graphs to determine Durand factors and there is still scope for improvement in the prediction of the deposition velocity at different solids concentrations. Equations to characterise the relationship between the Durand factor and the volume concentrations of solids in the slurry are presented. A correlation for the prediction of the deposition velocity is also developed and tested against some of the classical experimental data. The application of predicted values of deposition velocity in assessing the potential for the sanding-up of spiral separators is then described and a case study is presented.

MICRO SWITCH also offers a broad line of industrial control devices including heavy- duty limit switches, relays, manual controls and proximity switches. Other product lines are solid state keyboards for the computer industry and high-performance d.c. motors used in computer related equipment. So you can see that we are a component manufacturer. With the exception of the keyboards, every one of our products would "fit comfortably into a breadbox." Some are so tiny that one could easily fit several thousand into a man's hat. Procedures were developed for reclaiming high-temperature alloy scrap in the form of standard cobalt-base alloy. A cobalt-base, multicomponent, high- temperature alloy, such as S-816, can be successfully melted from scrap, and its specified chemical composition can be retained. Induction furnace melting in a controlled atmosphere was used to obtain ingots that were subsequently fabricated by impact forging to provide specimens for heat treatment and testing. Of the numerous metal elements in S-816 alloy, only small quantities of molybdenum were lost in the melting operation as finally developed. Test results indicated that the scrap material, after melting, forging, and heat treatment, was equivalent in room-temperature tensile strength, in high-temperature creep and stress-rupture properties, and in chemical composition to commercially produced S-816 alloy made from virgin material.

The development and operation of three large open cut brown coal mines in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria, Australia, requires a wide range of drilling techniques for coal resource evaluation and stratigraphic defi- nition, material property identification, open cut dewatering, and instal- lation of groundwater monitoring bores. This paper describes in detail the range of drilling techniques, equip- ment used and associated problems with drilling, in a deep sedimentary basin containing several major brown coal seams, multiple aquifer sys- tems of varying pressures and thin layers of hard materials including pyrite, siderite and basalt. Methods of rotary drilling include wireline core drilling, conventional core drilling, conventional flush drilling, diamond core drilling, reverse circulation air lift drilling and bucket auger drilling. Cable tool drilling is also used for strata definition and aquifer sampling.

The geodiversity of seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) deposits at the slow- and ultra-slow spreading ridges is of great variety (Fouquet et al., 2010). Tectonics and magmatism are the two principal factors which control SMS formation and localization. The geological setting of SMS deposits is determined by their position relative to the rift valley and by the types of rocks hosted (Table 1). Depending on the first parameter, SMS deposits could be localized at [ ] the axial volcanic ridge or at the flank of the rift valley. Basalts, deep-seated gabbro, and serpentinized peridotites are distinguished among the hosted rocks. The outcrops of deep-seated rocks are exposed at the flanks of the rift valley. The tectonic mechanism of the lower crust and mantle rocks exhumation process is connected with very large offsets along the detachment faults, resulting in a forming oceanic core complex (OCC) (Smith et al., 2006; MacLeod et al., 2009). The SMS related to OCCs are represented by such ore clusters as Ashadze, Logatchev, Semyenov, and some others (Table 1) and are increasing steadily in number. This fact in combination with widespread OCC formation at the slow-spreading ridges (Escartin et al., 2008) and high grades of metals in SMS related to OCCs has provoked considerable scientific and economic interest in these types of deposits. It could be mentioned in this regard that the first two applications to the International Seabed Authority for prospecting and exploration of sulfides have been submitted for the areas in the spreading centres with wide distribution of the core complexes.

The present work evaluated the use of copper ore flotation tails as flux in the process of smelting copper concentrates. For this purpose, experimental and simulated liquidus lines were obtained at different ratios of tail/flux. Experimental variables included temperature, partial pressure of oxygen and sulfur dioxide and the conditions of tridymite or spinel saturation. The results indicate the feasibility of replacing the flux by increasing the temperature of the smelting process by 20°C. Results of simulation using FactSage and HSC confirm that the required increase in temperature can be achieved by increasing the flow of concentrate, enrichment of oxygen or increasing the matte grade. INTRODUCTION In the pyro-metallurgical process of copper production, the smelting stage produces two liquid phases, a sulphide phase rich in copper and another composed mainly of oxides called slag. The slag phase is the product of oxidation of the iron contained in the flotation concentrate. The smelting process which is carried out at temperatures of 1250°C, require the addition of silica as a flux and the injection of air enriched in oxygen (Schlesinger 2011). Currently, one of the most important aspects of the mining industry is the minimization of costs, the optimization of the use of available resources and the reduction of environmental impact. Under this context, the use of flotation tails from as a flux in the copper smelting process has the potential of reduced production costs and generate an environmental benefit by reduce the disposal amount of this waste material Regarding the use of copper tails as flux in the copper smelting process, a thermodynamic simulation study using the FactSage software had been reported in the literature (Parra et al., 2011). The results indicated an increase of 35°C in the temperature the liquidus for the equilibrium matte/spinel and a subsequent requirement of energy in the process of approximately 350 [MJ/ton slag]. Given that the calculated viscosity remains in the same order of magnitude, the melting temperature is a more relevant parameter for the evaluation of the use of tailings as flux.
