On the 18th November, 19'58, the first coal was delivered to the Morwell Power Station from the adjacent Open Cut using conveyors for the transport of the coal from the working face to the boiler bunkers. As the cut develops the coal seam will be worked for its full depth of about 360 feet from four benches, each feeding a conveyor line along th.e face and up out of the cut to the power station and briquette factory. By 1970 the estimated maximum daily demand reaches 60,000 tons and the total annual output 18 million tons. The complete conveyor installation will then total some 9 miles with a capital cost of over £3~ million.The choice of conveyors in place of the more usual rail system was made possible by the development of movable belt conveyors which use mechanical conveyor shifting, high belt speeds and flexible high strength belts and the paper deals with these and some other aspects of the scheme.INTRODUCTIONThe development of brown coal deposits is usually based on open cut workings equipped with a few large dredgers giving an almost continuous output of coal or overburden which has to be hauled a comparatively short distance. These are ideal conditions for conveyor operation, and it is surprising that, until recently, rail transport has been used almost exclusively in brown coal open cuts. In some cases inclined conveyors have been introduced to take the coal from the coal levels up out of the cut to bunkers at groundlevel, but trains have been left to operate between the ditch bunker feeding the conveyor system and the dredger.

IN THEIR course across Ecuador, the Andes fail to show the mineral wealth with which they abound in Peru, Bolivia, and Chile. This may well be due merely to the concealment of recent volcanic ash and dense tropical jungle, but at any rate Ecuador has lacked the stimulation to development and progress afforded to the southern countries by the mines of Cerro de Pasco, Potosi, etc. 1 There is, however; in Ecuador, near its southern border, one mining district that, in recent years under North American management, has become a steady producer of mineral. wealth and. a community in which the sanitary and mechanical elements of modern life are displayed, for ;the first time, to the Ecuadorians of the lowland forests. The mining district of Zaruma is .situated in the province of El Oro, near the southwestern corner of Ecuador, about 50 km. (31 mi.) from the coast. Pizarro's first landing on the mainland was at Tumbez, at the mouth of the river that drains the Zaruma area; and the gold so abundantly found in this Indian town was soon traced to its source. In 1549, Mercadillo, one of the original (band, reached Zaruma, having worked his way up-stream through canyons that .are now regarded as impassable. The Bureau of Mines conducted a 4-year research program at Uravan, Colo., on a 2-1/2-acre reclamation plot on the slope of a uranium tailings pile that had been covered with mine waste rock. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of plant species, type of irrigation, type of fertilizers, and use of dust control chemicals on plant growth and surface coverage. Best grass coverage, nearly 100 percent with 240 plants per square foot, was developed in a section that was seeded with crested wheatgrass, fertilized with sewage sludge, and sprinkler irrigated. For comparison, a section that had been treated with commercial fertilizers developed 3.1 crested wheatgrass plants per square foot and 24 percent coverage without irrigation, and 8 plants per square foot and 75 percent coverage with irrigation. Results of spraying a dust control chemical were inconclusive. Russian-thistle invaded all test sections and ranged in density from 0.6 to 7.3 plants per square foot.

The selection rules fir twinning in fcc, bcc, and hcp lattices as established in Part I are used to predict the positions, relative to the matrix (untwinned) reciprocal lattice, of reflections due to double diffraction from the twins. These doubly diffracted reciprocal lattice points, which often coincide with ordinary matrix reciprocal lattice points, are deduced from kinematical considerations. 1. INTRODUCTION. A Bragg diffracted beam under certain conditions may be rediffracted to produce a third beam i .e., the incident beam, the first diffracted beam, and the rediffracted beam). In such a case an initial incident beam is diffracted by a set of planes; the diffracted beam may then be rediffracted by a second set of crystallographically different planes. The initially diffracted beam acts as an incident beam for the second set of planes, thus resulting in a twice-diffracted beam. This twice-diffracted beam may be regarded as a singly diffracted beam from a set of lattice planes whose structure factor is zero. In order to find the reciprocal lattice point corresponding to the doubly diffracted beam, it is customary1,2 to combine vectorially the component reciprocal lattice vectors which head to the extra reflections. For example, hcp metals may exhibit the forbidden (0001) reflections.* As Fig. 1 shows, the (0001) reciprocal lattice point results from: (1010) + (1011) = (0001) Similarly, combination of the beams (1011) and (1010) gives rise to: (1011)- (1010) = (0001) As Pashley and stowell2 have pointed out, even if in fact the double diffraction points lie on the Ewald sphere, they may not actually represent observed doubly diffracted beams because the initially diffracted primary beam, i.e., the source, must also correspond to a reciprocal lattice point which lies on the sphere of reflection; however, the reciprocal lattice point corresponding to the planes causing the rediffraction need not lie on the sphere. A little consideration of the Ewald construction in Fig. 2 makes this argument clear. In Fig. 2 the incident beam is represented by the wave vector ko. This beam is initially diffracted by the lattice planes (hkl) which are represented by the reciprocal lattice vector r(hk1) The reciprocal lattice point (hkl) of course lies on the Ewald sphere in order that the Bragg condition be satisfied. The initially diffracted beam is represented by the wave vector kl. If now kl is rediffracted by a second set of planes (h'k'l') resulting in k2 the lattice point (h"k"l") must lie on the Ewald sphere if the double diffracted beam k2 is to be observed. It is clear that (h"k"l") is the vector sum of (hkl) and (h'k'l'), and that (h'k'l') need not in fact lie on the Ewald sphere. In the usual1,2 analysis the origin (000) of the reciprocal lattice is shifted to the point (hkl). However the translation (000)— (hkl) automatically shifts the point (h'k'l') to the Ewald sphere, i.e., (h'k'l')— (h"k"1"). It is to be seen that (hkl), the source reflection, must lie on the Ewald sphere; if it does not the translation (000) — (hkl) places the "new" origin off the sphere, not satisfying the Ewald construction and hence the Bragg condition. The point (h"k"1") of course must lie on the sphere if it corresponds to an observed doubly diffracted beam. It is to be noted that crystals having the hcp structure, as just discussed, are intrinsically capable (i.e., without lattice defects such as twins) of double diffraction, as contrasted to fcc and bcc crystals which are extrinsically capable (requiring lattice defects or reoriented lattice regions). A time-consuming and expensive preshearing program to minimize the adverse effects of blasting on slope stability at Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Ruth Pit in east-central Nevada has been eliminated in favor of down-the-hole, nonelectric delayed blasting which can produce a smooth wall effect and improve blast fragmentation. The new blasting approach resulted from a Kennecott engineering investigation aimed at improving the stability of the extremely variable rock conditions found throughout the pit by reducing the vibrational energy imparted to the walls with conventional bench blasts.

Considering the main idea of the paper, namely that the interaction energy of reagents serves as a criterion used for their selection, as well as due to their insufficient study, the authors have therefore considered studying the aspects of computer modelling and molecular dynamics of largely used collectors for the flotation of nonferrous and precious metal ores. Three-dimensional molecular models for sulphydric reagents have been created, studying as well the distribution of the partial charges on their atoms. It has been shown that the value of the partial charge on the phosphorus atom in diethyldithiophosphinate and diethylmonothiophosphinate is high positive. The value of the partial charge of the sulphur atom is negative, strengthening its bond with the metal cations from the mineral surface. The molecular orbitals for the sulphydric reagents have been created determining as well the energy of their level. The computer modelling key parameters have therefore been defined. The new reagents have been tested for gold, copper and rhenium ore flotation. Gold recovery has increased with 4.2 - 4.7 %, copper recovery with 3.3 % and rhenium recovery with 15.5 %. A number of new flotation reagents have been recommended, such as: diethyldithiophosphate, (C2H5)2NCH2CH2OC(S)SNa, (C4H9NH)2P (S)SNa and also (C2H5)2P(S)ONa and (C2H5)2 P(O)S Na. I. INTRODUCTION. IN the summer of 1908, R. B. Cochran, Superintendent of the Compania Metalurgica Mexicana at Sierra Mojada, Mexico, presented to the Department of Geology and Mineralogy at Case School of Applied Science an interesting series of silver-, copper-, and lead-ores from the Veta Rica mine. These ores contained several interesting minerals which were associated in a somewhat peculiar manner, so that I was impelled to make a closer study of their occurrence. The investigation has brought out several new facts concerning the geology of the district and the geological occurrence of the ores, and therefore has seemed worthy of record. Two papers have been published previously about the region, one by Chism1 in 1887, and the other by Malcolmson2 in 1902. These articles, however, treat of the district more from the stand-point of the metallurgist and mining engineer, and not much attention is devoted to its mineralogy and economic geology. II. GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION OF THE DISTRICT. The Sierra Mojada is situated in the extreme western part of the State of Coahuila, near the Chihuahua boundary. It is reached best via the Mexican Central railroad from El Paso, Tex., to Escalon, Chihuahua, a distance of 494 miles. From this point, a branch line, the Mexican Northern railroad, runs 78 miles in a NE. direction to the mines, which are its northern terminus. An improved method of logging formation density has been developed in which the formation is bombarded with a collimuted beam of gamma rays. By means of a scintillation detector and pulse height discriminator, the gamma-ray energy band is accepted and recorded which corresponds to deepest penetration into the formation. Laboratory tests on a field tool revealed no borehole diameter effect for smooth holes and no effect of formation chemistry, except insofar as chemistry affects density. In extensive field tests, the density log has exhibited satisfactory agree-ment with core measurements and has correlated accurately with other logs. INTRODUCTION This paper describes an improved method of logging formation density by means of back-scattered gamma rays to penetrate the formation together with energy discrimination to select only that energy (or frequency) range corresponding to deepest penetration into the forma- tion. This method of density logging was developed at the La Habra laboratory of California Research Corp.* Field instruments have been built and tested by McCullough Tool Co. and commercial service has begun in some areas. All of the data discussed here were obtained for the original field tool. The density log can be a valuable adjunct to existing logs because of its use in determining porosity quantitatively. It is useful also in connection with seismic and gravity surveys where formation density information is of interest. PHYSICAL PRINCIPLES The intensity, I, of a beam of gamma rays after traversing a distance, x, in an absorbing medium is given by I = loe -ax where I, is the intensity of the beam entering the medium and a the attenuation constant or macroscopic cross section of the medium for gamma-ray absorption. The macroscopic cross section depends on the number and types of atoms per unit volume and the gamma-ray energy. In brief, it is the sum of the atomic cross sections of all atoms per cubic centimeter. The density of the material is the sum of the masses of all atoms per cubic centimeter. Thus, the density and the macroscopic cross section for gam-ma-ray absorption vary in propor- tion to the number of atoms per cubic centimeter. The density of the material increases, of course, if the atomic masses increase without a change in the number of atoms per cubic centimeter. When the density increases in this latter way, the macroscopic cross section increases also, but disproportionately. This results from the fact that part of the gamma-ray absorption arises from the photoelectric effect and the pair-production effect**, which are proportional to the sixth and to the second power, respectively, of the atomic number of the absorber. The remainder of the absorption results from the Compton effect, and is directly proportional to the atomic number. The gamma rays that undergo Compton scattering are not immediately absorbed. Since these rays are scattered in all directions, a fraction will emerge from the face of the medium at which they entered. If a gamma-ray shield is placed between the source and detector, most gamma rays reaching the detector will be those scattered out of the medium. The purpose of this paper is to describe the possible application of two relatively new technologies: flat load cells, and improvement seeking computer programs (referred to in the literature as heuristic programs); to a very old problem, inventors control of ball mills. The combination of these two technologies seems most applicable to grate discharge mills operated closed circuit. It is possible that other applications such as controlling the inventory of autogeneous mills might also be found. Direct control of ball mill inventory has been the goal of a number of investigators over many years. Many patents and articles on the subject have claimed success, but operating installations are hard to locate. An excellent review of the advantages and problems of direct inventory control is contained in an article by Oswald and Ziegler (1). Figure 1 is a conventional representation of throughput vs. inventory with other factors such as slurry consistency and rock twee held constant. There are common sense, physical arguments? and experimental evidence supporting the existence of a unimodel curve of this twee? though direct measurement of the shape is difficult and how it moves as rock type changes is riot well known. Figure 2 represents the problem faced by all mass measurements of inventory, a tare weight of about 25 time the inventory mass. "A numerical model of the induction hardening process of steel cranks has been developed and the predicted results of temperature and phase distribution during this solid state phase transformation process are verified with experimental data from the literature. This heat treatment process involves heating the crank to the austenitic temperature range followed by rapid quenching in water to harden the surface of the crank. The model has been developed using ABAQUS, commercial FEA software. The formation of martensite, pearlite, and retained austenite phases are modeled and implemented through a user defined function in ABAQUS. A sensitivity study on the various process parameters affecting the amount of phase distribution has been carried out.IntroductionThe type of surface and sub-surface microstructure as well as the residual stresses that are present in a component after manufacturing, significantly affects it fatigue performance. The wear resistance of the automotive components such as crankshaft, gears, camshaft and bearings depends on the surface hardness. In order to achieve the surface hardness, these steel components are subjected to a type of quench hardening heat treatment process. There are several heat treatment processes available for the industrial application to improve the mechanical properties of the final part. Case hardening using induction heating is one of the widely used industrial techniques for improving the surface microstructure of a steel component. It consists of two stages i.e. induction heating cycle, followed by quenching in a fluid medium (usually water or oil)"

As part of its goal to minimize the requirements for critical and strategic minerals, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research to foster the use of domestically abundant materials such as molybdenum. This report describes the development of an investment shell molding technique that can be used to make castings of molybdenum and its alloys. The mold material is cubic Zr02 with a monoclinic Zr02 binder. The shell, formed by standard investment molding techniques described in the text, is prepared for molybdenum casting by firing for 6 hours at 1,550° C (2,822° F) or for 4 hours at 1,650° C (3,002° F). The resulting castings have predictable and reproducible dimensions with good detail. As-cast strength is poorer than the strength of wrought materials below 1,600° F. At and above this temperature, tensile strengths of cast and wrought materials are nearly equal. Aqueous corrosion of the castings in most media is insignificant.

FLAKING or hair-line crack formation has been a major problem confronting the producer of large alloy steel forgings.' Today it is generally conceded that hydrogen in one or more forms in alloy steel sections is a requisite for flaking. Hence an obvious remedy is a thermal cycle that reduces the hydrogen content to some low level. In practice, this generally means holding the material at some subcritical temperature for a period of time depending on the size of the ingot or forging. THERE are three matters related to ore-hunting which I wish especially to discuss here: first, the paucity of the special writings applying to it; second, the failure of scientists to concern them-selves importantly with it; and, third, resting on these conditions, certain possible activities for economic geologists. First, as to the writings. Geological papers. are being produced in the United States alone at the rate of 10 to 12 shelf-feet per year.1 But papers specifically for the ore-hunter would go in a slim, annual pamphlet; all that have ever been written would go in a briefcase. "A numerical algorithm has been developed to simulate the movement, breakup, and entrapment of the oxide film inclusions encountered during the mold-filling processes of aluminum castings. The flowfield is solved using the well-known Marker and Cell (MAC) method by a time marching process. The Volume of Fluid (VOF) method is used to track the free surface boundaries. A kinematic approach is employed to track the movement and breakup of the oxide films on the free surface or in the bulk liquid metal. The computer program based on the proposed algorithm is able to model the flow behavior and oxide film movement, breakup, and entrapment in mold cavities for aluminum castings.IntroductionMetallographic and fractographic studies of the aluminum castings show tangled networks of oxide films in the castings. These oxide films can form in the furnaces or during the mold filling processes. Green and Campbell [I] concluded that the oxide film defects dominate the strength of aluminum castings. The main cause of oxide film entrapment into the bulk molten metal during the casting processes is the surface turbulence. In film-forming alloys, if the surface breaks, due to a drop, a fountain, or a breaking wave, then the surface film is folded over and incorporated into the bulk liquid. The incorporation of surface films leads to cracks in the casting and other defects that are nucleated by the presence of the folded films, such as porosity and hot tears. Campbell [2] estimated that up to 80% of scrap in light-alloy casting is the result of surface turbulence."

Sedimentary francolite and magmatic apatite are characterized by specific laser-induced time- resolved luminescence, which allows phosphate to be distinguished from accompanying dolomite. The "selective window" parameters are: he, = 337 nm, delay time after laser pulse is 0.5-5 ps, and detection spectral range is 400-525 nm. In the case of nonuniform distribution of phosphate minerals, it makes it possible to accomplish lasero- luminescent sorting and to receive intermediate product with a lowered dolomite contents.

Bulk sulfide concentrate produced from Missouri Pb ore concentrator tailings must be reground to liberate sulfide values for subsequent sepa-ration. Studies to determine grinding parameters for optimum liberation were carried out using optical microscopy coupled with image analysis. The major sulfide phases present in the ground mineral particulates are marca-site, pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, siegenite. and bravoite. Results showed that the base metal minerals were liberated by grinding to 74 micrometers (200 mesh), but the siegenite and bravoite required grinding to 20 micrometers or less to achieve liberation. Both the experimental method and results are presented.
