The current limit to power transmission for grinding mills through one mill pinion is approximately 7,500kW. Above this power rating either twin pinion arrangements or Gearless drives are required. The SMTP concept was developed to overcome this limitation by using two pinions with a single large drive motor. The SMTP mill drive offers major advantages in capital cost and greatly simplifies plant layouts, while using an innovative adaptation of industry-proven single helical gearing. Through the use of a single motor, provision of variable speed drive is greatly simplified. The SMTP can also be used for significant power upgrades on existing mills.

INTRODUCTION The principal means for transporting men, supplies, and mined material in an underground or surface mine are rail systems, conveyor belt systems, or a combination of the two. Typically, large underground mines use rail haulage from the mining sections to the hoist, with conveyor belts being used within the sections. Small mines use conveyor belts in the mains and sub- mains as well as in the panels. The size and layout of surface mines also contribute to variations in the way these haulage systems are applied. The following sections address the typical problems confronting mining engineers in designing these haul- age systems. For rail, these include rail selection and turnout design, locomotive tractive-effort calculation, and motor sizing. Belt haulage calculations include belt width and speed specifications, tension and take- up requirements, idler spacings, and motor sizing. TRACK LAYOUTS Introduction The adequacy of mine track layouts is dependent upon such factors as rail weight (Table l), suitable ties, a well-drained roadbed, and properly designed curves, grades, and track alignment. As long as the installation conforms to the manufacturer's recommendations, good service can be expected from the rail system. Typically, mining-engineering calculations for rack layouts have dealt almost exclusively with the design of turnouts. As such, the following section provides the necessary information for computing the theoretically correct dimensions of turnouts. Turnout Design Fig. 1 shows a typical turnout with an identification of the component parts. Fig. 2 identifies the variables that are used to determine the turnout dimensions. Stratabound copper ore bodies in thick Proterozoic metamorphosed sedimentary and volcanic rocks at the Tong Kuang Yu Mine in southern Shanxi Province of China were considered as possibly being amenable to block cave mining. Initial evaluation of caving characteristics was based upon old calyx drilling records, limited underground mining experience and geological mapping, a few diamond drill holes and measurements in surface subsidence features. Classification and mapping distribution of rock quality types aided in mine design, prediction of fragment sizing and explosive requirements, cave assist and ground support requirements. Comparison is made between early feasibility predictions and actual mine experience.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Cu-Ag-Au mineralisation at Kluwih prospect in Eastern Java, Indonesia is related to a high-sulfidation hydrothermal system within a volcanic dome (2.35 × 1.7 km diameter). The mineralisation occurs mainly in steeply dipping, structurally-controlled quartz-enargite-pyrite veins (several centimetres to 2 m wide) and is hosted mainly in porphyritic dacite, volcaniclastic rocks and volcanic breccia of the dome and in an underlying andesite that yielded a zircon U-Pb age of 11.5 Ma.Short wave infrared spectrometer analyses were carried out for alteration mapping at Kluwih. There are two main stages of alteration produced by the hydrothermal activity. The alteration mineral assemblages indicate an advanced argillic alteration. The Cu mineralisation occurred in the form of enargite and subordinate chalcopyrite with an intergrown texture in the early stage. These mineralised veins are characterised by narrow pyrophyllite ± diaspore and dickite selvages (metres wide) and a peripheral K-muscovite envelope (sericitic alteration) up to 100 m wide. The K-muscovite envelope is zoned outward to Na-muscovite or Na-illite. Late-stage kaolinite and smectite alteration overprints the porphyritic dacite and may obscure the nature of early mica-clay alteration. The spatial distribution of different alteration assemblages suggests that the temperature of hydrothermal fluid increases with depth.Both the high-sulfidation mineralisation and advanced argillic alteration are suggested to be related to magmatic-hydrothermal fluids, which are likely to originate from an undiscovered deeper porphyry Cu-Au system below the porphyritic dacite. Based on alteration mapping results and comparisons to similar deposits, the porphyry intrusion could be up to 500 m below the volcanic dome. South Deep Mine is currently undertaking numerous voidfilling projects using low strength aerated cement products. Representative samples from one such site, were taken and tested for the load deformation behaviour under uniaxial loading conditions. The process of sample collection, laboratory preparation and testing are explained in detail. The results of testing were analyzed and the critical aspects pointed out as a design consideration to be implemented as part of the quality control and assurance program. Design aspects and underground application of the aerated cement product are discussed for the particular site on 58 level SV1. A simple instrumentation has been designed and installed to enable monitoring of any future movements in this area. A quality control and assurance process has been formulated enabling all aspects of the support installation in this excavation to be signed off.

"""Pilot Plant Operations"" is a final-year core course given to the Metallurgy and Materials Science students at the University of Toronto. This course involves a laboratory study of an industrial project at an industrial site. Details of this program are discussed and reviewed after eight years of experience. IntroductionEducators in the field of Metallurgy and Materials Science have long agreed that ""hands-on"" experience is an important component in the education of metallurgical engineers. This philosophy is reflected in the undergraduate curricula of most metallurgical schools. The major problems encountered with laboratory-associated courses are the requirements for equipment, space and funds for both purchase and maintenance of equipment. For example, consider an exercise in crushing and grinding treatment in a mineral processing laboratory. Such operations require the handling of tons of material and often equipment of large size. The problems of storage of ore, methods of handling and maintenance of equipment are a few of the concerns facing the department. Considering that metallurgical departments at universities are, in general, relatively small, the support to purchase and maintain largescale equipment becomes an annual budgetary concern. In reality, universities today are not geared to operate mini-pilot plant equipment, either in terms of space or personnel.For the above reasons, in 1972an undergraduate core course called ""Pilot Plant Operations"" was introduced to the fourth year curriculum in Metallurgy and Materials Science at the University of Toronto. This course consists of I to 2 full weeks (8 hrs per day) of pilot plant laboratory study at an industrial site on a project of mutual interest with the industrial organization whose facility is being used. The first 5 years of the program were carried out at the pilot plant facility at the Ontario Research Foundation; Stelco's Research Centre in Burlington, Ontario, was used for the last 3 years. The nature of the projects undertaken during the 8-year period is shown in Table 1."

In the Shanghai area, the soil conditions are such that bearing piles have become an essential foundation part of the new highrise buildings. In order to reduce the settlements under the high working loads of about 2300 kN/pile, the Chinese building authorities require the pile tip to penetrate into the compact sand layer, situated at approx. 60-70 m depth. No H-piles have yet been tested under these conditions in Shanghai. This paper describes the driving of 8 H-bearing piles with 4 different shapes and with lengths varying from 45 to 75 m. Dynamic measurements are performed during driving and after a wait time of approx. 40 hours in order to assess the change in bearing capacity in function of time and in order to get an idea about the resistance distribution along the piles by using a stress wave analysis program (CAPWAP). One pile is equipped with channels between the flanges for executing verticality measurements with an inclinometer. However, this test has not yet been performed. One month after driving, two piles of 75 m length are statically loaded both in vertical and in horizontal directions.

The spatial distribution of copper grades at the Mansa Mina project is highly variable due to the presence of high grade copper/silver/arsenic breccia bodies. Copper grades within the breccia bodies tend to average about 4.5% copper while grades in the surrounding stockwork average about 1.0%. The breccia is known to occur in the vicinity of significant controlling structures, however, the outline and therefore the thickness of the bodies are far from regular. Due to the high grade of these bodies a significant proportion of the value of the project is derived from the breccia tonnages. The irregularity in the outlines/thickness translates into an uncertainty in the breccia tonnage and therefore in the value of the project. Acknowledging the economic importance of the breccia bodies and the risk associated with the breccia tonnage uncertainty, significant additional drilling has been proposed to both understand the spatial distribution of the breccias and reduce project risk. The costs associated with this additional drilling are not inconsequential; thus, a reasonable question is ‘what value is derived from this additional drilling’? To obtain an answer to this important question, a simulation approach is applied. First the deposit is simulated using the existing drilling and the uncertainty in the resource is defined. Next the proposed drilling program is simulated and the simulated data are added to the existing data. Using this expanded data set a second simulation of the deposit is created and once again the uncertainty in the resource is defined. Using this approach, the reduction in the uncertainty in the resource can be determined. To convert this reduction in uncertainty (or reduction in risk) in the stated resource into a dollar value, a method of defining the increase in the project rate of return necessary to account for risk is presented. Using the two different rates of return, the difference in project NPV and hence the value of additional drilling is determined.

Recently, the quality of sinter feed ore used in sintering process has deteriorated. In particular, Fe has decreased and gangue component has increased in the sinter feed ore. Increase of gangue is not only the factor to influence sinter qualities, but also the factor to increase coke ratio in the blast furnace operation as the increase of slag ratio. Therefore, to cope with the deterioration of iron ore qualities, studies on alternative iron ore resources and development of its utilisation technology have been required.In that kind of new iron ore resources, authors focus on high-grade magnetite fine. High-grade magnetite fine decreases sinter productivity by the decrease of permeability of sintering bed. Therefore a new study for using large amount of magnetite fine is required. In the past, there are some studies about the effect of mixing ratio and size of magnetite fine on productivity and quality, but there are few studies about magnetite fine segregation in charging.In this research, the melting behaviour and interfacial reaction calcium-ferrite, which has important role as bonding agent among iron ores, melts into hematite substrate and magnetite substrate was studied. As the results, it was defined that upper segregation of high-grade magnetite fine is suitable for productivity of sintered ore. In 1930 the Bureau of Mines published a description3/ f the concentrating process of the Magma Copper Co. as it had been developed to that time and was then employed. The prevent paper revises the description to the end of 1943 and includes a description of the smelting processes. Data from the mild and smelter operations for, 1942 are given in tables 1 to 14, Billing costs are included, but it is not permissible to publish smelter costs.

Measurements from an old survey are being machine processed as a pilot project in the development of a computer-assisted method of structural mapping in shield areas. The key element in the system is a field data sheet which requires the geologist to determine a textural hierarchy in each exposure. The pilot system is limited to orientation analysis and utilizes a prior textural analysis, but this would not usually be a problem in utilizing the system ab initio for exploration. A data processing system of this general type offers promise of considerably increased productivity of field geologists by reducing compilation time and improved technical supervision through centralization of processing, and would make structural analysis an economically viable tool in mining exploration and development.

Flue dust from the sintering of base metal sulphides was leached to remove cadmium and arsenic. Leach liquor contained cadmium, zinc and small amounts of other base metals as chlorides. Results are reported of the use of a cation exchange resin Zeocarb 225 to separate the base metals from the arsenic. The resin was eluted with sodium chloride or sulphate to give a solution of relatively concentrated cadmium suitable for recovery by zinc cementation. The limited solubility of sodium sulphate presented some practical problems which were investigated. Another problem was the precipitation of lead sulphate in the resin during elution.INTRODUCTIONWhen lead-zinc sulphides are sintered prior to smelting, the gases passing to the flue are mainly uncondensable but contain a certain proportion of sublimates and dust particles which deposit in the flue or are carried, after condensation in the gas stream, to some form of dust extraction equipment.The recovered dust is a complex mixture of base metal sulphates, sulphites, sulphides, chlorides and oxides, the composition depending on the original concentrates. A large proportion of the cadmium and some of the arsenic originally in the concentrates finds its way to this flue dust, the treatment of which can be a convenient means of removing these elements and controlling their concentrations in the main lead-zinc smelter circuit. However, disposing of this material represents an appreciable waste of base metals as well as a serious toxicity hazard.Sulphide Corporation Pty. This paper describes a mobile laboratory developed specifically for nickel prospecting, and which was designed to be operated by sub-professional staff in remote areas independently of established laboratories. An atomic absorption spectrophotometric procedure was used to determine nickel, cobalt, lead, zinc, and copper ID latentIc and sulphIde samples, with a detection limit better than 25 µg/g for all elements. The procedure was applicable to both soil and drill samples and the accuracy of the procedure, which was ±5 per cent relative at the 1,000 µg/g level was sufficient for the preliminary assessment of mineralized samples and the control of drilling operations. The analytical procedure and the means taken to ensure the necessary reproductibility and accuracy are described. One operator can carry out 400 elemental determinations per 8-hr day at an approximate cdst of 6 cents per elemental determination. The results are returned within a single day, a factor which can contribute materially to the efficiency of drilling operations.

An increase in the importance of low-grade materials as sources of gold and silver has led to the need for improved analytical methods on leach solutions, ores and various effluents, residues, and in-process streams. These are required by plant operators as guides to process control and for accounting pldrposes. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) and AAS preceded by pre- concentration have been applied successfully to resolve many such problems. However, AAS is no panacea and imprecision or loss of accuracy can result if adequate precautions are not taken to prevent losses and eliminate interferences. The recent methods are discussed together with methods for overcoming difficulties. Comparisons with more classical analytical techniques are also given.

It seems that mining has been in the doldrums for awhile. Except for gold, metals prices remain depressed. And economic conditions in the United States and around the globe have put governments in a financial bind. This affects new building and infra-structure repairs, which, in turn, have a major impact the building materials industry. Add to that the severe environmental and regulatory restrictions placed on the mining industry in developing new mines and expanding existing ones. It’s enough to make a mining engineer/geologist/metallurgist go sell real estate. So why do those employed in the mining industry stay in the business and remain optimistic? Many of them will say that they have been through down cycles before and know that an upswing is in the offing. They also know that society will always need the commodities they produce. And they love the challenge. The challenge in mining’s case is producing commodities as cheaply as possible, in an environmentally sound manner and improving the quality of life in the communities where they work.

An integrated mine system must be capable of displaying and reporting valuable information that can be used to easily understand, manage and take action on the key parameters being reported.One of the key aspects of integration is the standardisation of the mine information up to a level capable of adapting the main characteristics of past projects at the mine and enforcing the same or higher standards for newer projects being developed.At the El Teniente mine, photogrammetry is used to map the advance of horizontal developments, and the constructed 3D representation of each face is then used by the geologists to obtain structural information about the areas being photographed.The mine realised that valuable mining information could also be extracted from the photogrammetry being applied, with three possible areas of development envisioned.The first area was creating a link between the developments being planned on a yearly and monthly basis and matching them with plan sections of the 3D developments of the system to account for any deviations.The second area was to use vertical sections of the 3D developments to estimate the overbreak of the excavations in different areas of the mine.The third area was the provision of a more detailed analysis of the sections so that they could provide information on the thickness of the shotcrete being applied.This paper presents the different alternatives being used and examines how the project is currently being developed and managed at the mine. A range of supported gold catalysts was prepared by ion exchange, varying many of the preparation variables, including concentration in the precursor solution, washing procedure, as well as drying and calcination procedures. These catalysts have been characterized extensively. TEM images show essentially the same crystallite size distributions, between 2?5 nm, for almost all catalysts, the only exception being catalysts not washed in ammonia, which did not show any small crystallites. Additional characterization with SEM yielded an interesting discovery. Catalysts that appear identical on the TEM also contain some large crystallites in the range of 50?500 nm. Differences in dispersion due to the drying procedure not seen on the TEM can now be observed. Oxygen chemisorption is being investigated as an additional method to characterize gold based catalysts to complement the typically used electron microscope techniques.
