Ces travaux ant conduit ala découverte et ala mise en valeur de gisements de granite architectural, de graphite, de dolomite et ant aussi permis de repertorier des gîtes et des indices prometteurs de wollastonite, de silice, de calcite. de dolomite, de silicates d'alumine et de terres rares. Les gisements récemment découverts sont actuellement exploités au sur Ie point de l'être et les gîtes et les indices les plus prometteurs ant été jalonnés.ABSTRACTSince the late 18oos, the Grenville Province in Québec has been an important and diversified source of industrial minerals. The Ministere de l'Énergie et des Ressources du Québec, under the Canada-Quebec Mineral Development Agreement, and the private sector have put an emphasis on exploration, mapping and evaluation programs in the Grenville Province for minerals, particularly since 1983. These programs have led to the discovery and the development of deposits such as architectural granite, graphite and dolomite, and have also led to inventories of occurrences and prospects of wollastonite, silica, calcite, dolomite, alumina silicates and rare earths. The deposits discovered lately are presently being quarried or will be in the near future. The most promising occurrences and prospects have been claimed."

A study including effects of 7) pH value, 2) fatty acid collector, 3) fuel oil, 4) interfering ion, 5) particle size, and 6) operational variables. Test results indicate feasibility of fatty acid flotation under certain restrictive conditions. FATTY acids have been used as standard collectors for floating the matrix1-8 but not the leached zone phosphate ores. After a series of investigations, Davenport9 and Tarbutton10 concluded that the Florida leached zone ores tested were unamenable to fatty acid flotation and must be upgraded by floating the siliceous gangue with Armac-T as collector. The cationic flotation was estimated11 to cost almost ten times as much as a fatty acid process that would ideally give the same flotation grades and recoveries of phosphates. Mineralization: Extensive deposits of leached zone aluminiferous phosphate occur in Florida."= The ore sample used for this work was obtained from the Virginia-Carolina Chemical Corp., Clear Springs area, Florida. The ore is a potential source of uranium and aluminum as well as phosphorus. Since the uranium and the recoverable aluminum are contained in some of the phosphate minerals, an upgrading of phosphate results in a corresponding enrichment of both uranium and aluminum. The phosphate minerals in the ore are primarily pseudo-wavellite, millisite, and carbonate fluorapatite, with a minor amount of wavellite. Quartz and clay are the common gangue minerals, quartz being predominant. Others present in small amounts are ilmenite, hydrated iron oxides, staurolite, monazite, and zircon. Experimental Procedures: After being dried to less than 1 pct surface moisture the material was dry-ground in a Hardinge conical ball mill to —6 mesh. The ground product was classified into 6/20, 20/200, and —200 mesh size fractions. On the basis of Table I, the coarse and fine size fractions were considered as phosphate concentrates, because of their high phosphorus contents. In contrast, the 20/200 mesh fraction, which was low in phosphorus, was used as the flotation feed. All the flotation tests, unless otherwise stated, were performed in a laboratory Fagergren machine under the following conditions: 1) 400 g of solid feed for each test, 2) 2000 rpm impeller speed, 3) 8.9 pH and 4-min conditioning, and 4) 3-min flotation. The procedure used for the quantitative bubble pick-up tests has been described previously.18

The self-potential or spontaneous polarization method is one of the oldest in the field of electrical exploration. When applied in prospecting for ore bodies, it is one of the most rapid and inexpensive means of locating indications of ore bodies at shallow depth. Usually, the procedure is to survey the equipotential lines of the electrical field that is generated by the electrochemical activity of the ore near the ground-water level, and to localize the so-called negative centers or points of greatest negative anomaly. Another field procedure involves the measurement of potential differences along potential profiles, generally laid out at right angles to the assumed strike. Again, in such survey, the basis for establishing the presence of ore is the location of negative potential anomalies. The earlier writers on the subject, notably Schlumbergerl and R. C. Wells,2 did much to clarify the fundamental electrochemical phenomena involved. Interpretation of the field data, however, remained largely qualitative. In 1925, A. Petrovsky3 analyzed the relation between the shape of the potential anomaly curve and size and depth of an Ore body by assuming the subsurface body to be a polarized sphere.' Along similar lines of approach, Edge and Laby5 considered the ore body a dipping sheet with limited extent in the direction of strike, while Poldini6 based the theory on the assumption of a dipping bar. The following study endeavors to enlarge upon these earlier investigations and attempts, on the basis of the potential distribution of a polarized bar, to indicate certain characteristics of the anomaly curve that make possible the determination of depth, size and dip of a subsurface body. The Spontaneous Polarization Field Set Up by an Ore Body If a sulphide ore body is subjected to oxidation varying in degree in its upper and lower parts according to the difference in the concentration of oxygen within the surrounding medium, an electrical potential field is set up. The form and distribution of this field will be investigated herein with special reference to its components on the earth,s surface. Under the simplifying assumption that the ore body may be considered as a dipole with the point sources Q1 and Q2 situated at its upper and lower ends (Fig. I), the potential of the spontaneous polarization at point P is given by the following equation:

"From a lifecycle point of view, biologically digested sludge is a valuable product that should be reused if possible. In contrast to landfill and incineration, application of digested sludge comprises the recycling nutrients and organic matter and reflects the policy of resource conservation and sustainability in waste management. Sludge may be applied to agricultural land for further sludge treatment and improvement of the characteristics of the soil. The characteristics of sludge that affect its applicability for soil conditioning include moisture content, pathogens, nutrients and metals. In this paper, the use of solid anaerobic digestion sludge of the lignocellulosic residues to condition soil was investigated in regards to nutrient composition, water content/retention capacity, hygienic quality (contamination of pathogenic bacteria) and heavy metal adsorbing/releasing characteristics of the sludge.The digested sludge had approximately 44.5% free and immobilized water and 46.9% bound water. The water-holding capacity of the sludge was high. This was the first merit to apply the sludge to agriculture in dry areas. Secondly, the sludge was rich in macro-nutrients (N, P, K) and a series of micro-nutrients (Ca, Mg, Mn, Na, Fe, Cu, Zn, B). The water-soluble fractions of macro-nutrients in the sludge were found considerably low. This implied that the loss or leaching of the macro-nutrients from the anaerobic sludge to the aqueous environment be slow. The nutrients loss owing to leaching could be reduced. However, because of a lower macro-nutrient content of the anaerobic sludge, comparable to the chemical fertilizer, it is advisable that the anaerobic sludge be applied together with commercial fertilizer to the agriculture land. Thirdly, the anaerobic sludge had strong selective adsorption affinity for heavy metal ions; non-heavy metal ions such as K(I) and Ca(II) could be released easily from the sludge in a wide pH range, such as pH from 1.0 to 8.0. Since the metal toxicity to the environment mainly comes from the mobile heavy metal ions, the selectivity to adsorb heavy metal ions of the anaerobic sludge can be utilized to reduce the availability of heavy metal ions to plants and humans in aquatic environment. Fourthly, the anaerobic digestion under thermophilic conditions showed a promising disinfecting effect to the sludge, in contrast to the landfill digestion."

"The development of mobile phone technology has increased the replacement of outdated equipments for more modern models, transforming disposal of such devices into a serious environmental problem. Recycling appears as an attractive alternative to minimize the environmental impact of disposing such large quantities. Recycling can be accomplished by treating the printed circuit boards of used mobile phones by using the same techniques used in ore treatments with hammer mill; magnetic separation, electrostatic separation and grain size range. Before performing the recycling process a PCB characterization was performed to identify the fraction with the higher metals concentration/content. This study demonstrated that the electrostatic separation was not the best metals concentration of PCB aiming the recycling, while the non-magnetic residue had presented a more significant metal concentration. Furthermore, after the magnetic separation was possible to separate the following metals: iron and nickel.IntroductionPortable electronic devices have gained increasing acceptance over the last decades. Mobile phones sales in Brazil, for instance, have reached 104 million in 2007, and 128 million in 2008. It is estimated that, around the world, 100 million mobiles are thrown away every year, either because of loss of functionality or because newer models are launched in the market [1,2, 3]. Printed circuit boards in mobile phones are made of many materials, with approximately 83% in weight being metals and fiber-glass, and the balance being plastics pl. Several metals can be recovered from the electronics waste, such as copper, tin, iron, lead, nickel, titanium, aluminium as well as some precious metals such as gold, silver and palladium [4, 5, 6, 7, 8]. Concurrent with the increasing world demand for copper, there average metal content in ores has been decreasing. Economically interesting copper mines used to have 4% metal content, whereas presently, such content is around 1%, i.e., for every 1 ton of ore extracted, only 10 kg are copper [9, 10]. Approximately 33% of printed circuit boards (PCBs) composition is copper, that is, for every 1 ton of PCBs waste, 330 kg are copper [1]. Research in recycling PCB waste focuses on mechanical, electrometallurgy, pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes [3, 8]. Collecting and recycling obsoletes electro-electronic equipments is very important these days, in order to, not just preserve the non renewable natural resources but also to keep the environment and the population safe from the pollution caused by the toxic materials and heavy metals present in this kind of waste."

The thermal coefficients of linear expansion for several stainless steels have been determined over the temperature range from —300° to 1000°F. The steels studied include types 301, 304, 316, 347, 310 and 330. This wide selection of compositions allows an insight into the effects of austenite stability and alloy content on the expansion characteristics. THE recent increased use of materials in low temperature applications has created a field for which the properties of austenitic iron, chromium, nickel alloys are particularly suited. Tensile and impact values of stainless steels at subzero temperatures have been made available in the technical literature but, as yet, little information has been published with respect to expansion characteristics. In order to supply this need, a study was made of several of the more common compositions. Those selected were types 301, 304, 316, 347, 310 and 330 stainless steel. Both the mean and instantaneous coefficients of linear expansion were determined over the temperature range from —300°F to 1000°F. Procedure The materials used were commercial grades with the exception of type 301 which was made in a 10# high frequency furnace. The compositions are listed in table I. All steels were given an anneal at 1950°F for 30 min and water quenched prior to machining the expansion specimens. Expansion readings were taken on specimens 0.250 in. in diam by 4.000 in. long with a fused quartz tube expansion apparatus similar to that described by Hidnert and Souder.1 Temperature measurements were made with a chromel-alurnel thermocouple calibrated for use at subzero temperatures. A bath of propane was used for temperatures from —300° to —100°F and one of alcohol from —100°F to room temperature. These baths were contained in large mouthed Dewar flasks and cooled to the desired temperature levels by passing liquid nitrogen through glass cooling coils placed in the flasks. The baths were stirred constantly for temperature equalization and were heated by immersing metal rods which were replaced frequently enough to give a heating rate of approximately 150°F per hr. A resistance wound furnace was used for heating from room temperature to 1000°F and throughout this range rates of about 450°F per hr were maintained. The furnace was designed so that the temperature gradient over the specimen was within 5°F. In most instances, the expansion readings were taken during heating from —300° to +300°F at

In May, 1919, a crosscut on the 1400-ft. level of the Briggs mine, a Calumet, & Arizona property at Bisbee, Ariz., penetrated a deposit of pyrite and chaleopyrite that had replaced quartzite and limestone and was cut, especially in the quartzite, by numerous fractures. As the drift advanced through these fractured portions, they were found to be free from copper-sulfate minerals although '(sooty" chalcocite was present in the fractures and also as coatings and replacements of pyritc. Howcver, sulfate soon made its appearance in certain fractures, filled them, and began to form stalactites. Several centers of incipient growth were noted for subsequent study, observations in the drift at frequent intervals during the past 17 months affording the opportunity of determining the rate of formation of the stalactites. The one to attain the greatest growth during the period of observation measured 27 in. long and averaged 1 in. in diameter. A close study showed it to be composed of small interlocked crystals of chalcanthite radiating from a small central tube-like opening. The trielinic form of the crystals was evident with prism and pinacoid faces recognixable. Assuming that the supply of copper-sulfate solution was constant (luring the 17 months—-and such an assumption is supported by the fact that the number of drops of excess solution falling, per minute, from the tip of the stalactite at the times of observation checked closely—thc stalactite, it has been estimated, grew at the rate of 1.58+ in. per month. Curtiss, in the monogr:tpll on Eureka, Ncv., say:: that a stalactite formed in limestonc grew 5/8 in. in three weeks and continued to grow as long as it had a drop of water or solution at the lower end. Another grew at the rate of 3/8 in. in the same time. In the case cited by Mr. Mitchell, the growth was about 136 in. in three weeks. A year ago we had an instance of the formation of cubes of galena on a railroad spike. "A research program on modelling cement grinding circuits has been in operation at Hacettepe University, Ankara, for four years. It has concentrated so far on tube mill and air separator grinding circuits for cement clinker, with emphasis on plant sampling surveys, including axial sampling inside the tube mills. The methodology is to use plant data to build the models and to supplement this by laboratory data where necessary, for example the determination of breakage functions. The plant data come from comprehensive sampling surveys and so far 33 surveys of clinker grinding circuits have been carried out in 9 plants. The operating conditions have been• mill sizes – 3.2 to 4.8 metres diameter and 8.5 to 15 metres long,• mill feed rates – 46 to 158 tonnes per hour,• air flow through mills – 25000 to 125000 cubic metres per hour,• cement clinker work indexes – 10.3 to 18,• separator sizes – 2. to 3.1 metres diameter,• separator feed rates – 132 to 689 tonnes per hour,• separator speeds – 12.3 to 21 metres per second.The ball mill model is Whiten’s perfect mixing model and the separator model is the Tromp curve with a fish-hook. This paper emphasises on the importance of calculating the breakage rates and the discharge functions with three case studies at five different circuits which were selected for discussion because they show how particular features of circuit operation can be included in the general models. Size distributiongraphs are used to illustrate every aspect of the discussion.In case I the special emphasis on calculating the breakage rates and discharge rates separately is given in a high pressure grinding roll-ball mill-separator circuit. The tonnes of each size fraction in the mill and the calculated values of R/D, D and R are determined. The values of R per mw are also given to allow comparison with mills of other sizes. The circuit allows the comparison of the static type (V Sep) and dynamic type separators (SKS). Comparing the reduced efficiencies shows that the dynamic separator is slightly more efficient than the static one.In case 2 data are given from two compartment tube mills having the same diameter and the motor power but different ball size gradation. The breakage rate particle size variation of the second chamber of two mills indicate that having finer ball size distribution causes higher breakage rate values."

IN a previous paper§ the authors reported on the mechanical properties of a 65 per cent copper, 10 per cent manganese, 25 per cent zinc alloy as compared with similarly processed cartridge brass. Additional investigations by these laboratories, on higher copper alloys, have demonstrated that at lower zinc concentrations even larger amounts of pure manganese may be added to copper-zinc alloys without exceeding the single-phase solid solution limits, and that similar increases in tensile strength, yield strength, and hardness may be obtained without excessive decreases in ductility. Several compositions in this range showed also a decided color change with increasing manganese. The normal "brassy" color was considerably lightened and reduced to a faint yellow cast at 15 per cent manganese. With higher manganese contents the alloys were essentially white and similar in appearance to the nickel-silver alloys. From this work it appeared that it would be desirable to determine more completely the properties of the wrought and annealed white alloys. Accordingly, a more detailed study was planned of an alloy having the composition 70 per cent copper, 20 per cent manganese, and 10 per cent zinc. This alloy remained single-phase throughout the working and annealing cycles of the preliminary tests and appeared to be about the strongest of the white single-phase alloys. The project included also an investigation of additional alloys, deviating from this composition by 5 per cent of each of the three components to evaluate the effects of variation in composition; also a study of the properties of the central alloy made with silicothermic manganese. MATERIAL PREPARATION Electrolytic manganese, wirebar copper, and electrolytic zinc were used for the preparation of the alloys. Representative analysis of the electrolytic manganese seldom exceeds 0.01 per cent iron, 0.02 per cent sulphur and 0.02 per cent lead, with no silicon or aluminum. A typical sample of the silicothermic manganese metal contained 2 per cent iron, 0.81 per cent silicon, 0.i6 per cent carbon, and 0.36 per cent aluminum. Melting and alloying were performed in a high-frequency furnace with magnesia crucibles. Melts were deoxidized with small aluminum additions and cast into 25-lb. slab ingots. Care was exercised in deoxidation to avoid excessive amounts of residual aluminum, which has been found to have significant effects on alloys in this system. This paper describes a graphical technique by which the operating points for a two-fan ventilation system can be represented as the intersection of the modified fan curves. In constructing the diagram, the air quantities associated with the fans are considered to be independent variables and employed as the axes of a rectangular coordinate system. The diagram may include, in addition to the modified fan curves, contour lines for resistances, pressures, and air powers. Procedures for drawing the diagram are discussed and illustrated with an example of the ventilation system.

This paper describes a process for separating non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, copper and zinc, from other residential and industrial waste by means of permanent magnets. Although the separator may be used in the recovery of non-ferrous metals from auto scrap, most of the testing to date has been aimed at recovery of non-ferrous metals from municipal solid waste, especially recovery of aluminum from the heavy fraction of a resource recovery plant. In most resource recovery plants the incoming solid waste material is first shredded and then air classified into a light and a heavy fraction. The light fraction which contains mostly paper, cardboard, etc., can be used either as a fuel for power generation or in the production of new paper products. The heavy fraction which remains consists mostly of glass, ceramics, wood, ferrous metals and non-ferrous metals. The ferrous metals may be removed from the heavy fraction by conventional magnetic separators. After primary shredding, most of the glass and ceramic is fine in size and may be screened away leaving a residue of wood, cardboard, and non-ferrous metals. This residual heavy fraction is the input material for the separator described in the present paper.

"Wolf Creek Dam and Lake Cum berland in Russell County Kentucky is operated by the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USAGE) Nashville District It is a combination 3,940 ft long (1,200 m) non-zoned clay embankment, a maximum of 215 ft (65.5 m) above top of rock and 1,796 ft long (547 m) concrete gravity section. Built in the 1940s, the limestone beneath the embankment is characterized by an extensive interconnected network of solution feature; varying from fist size to largecaves.In 2005, studies conducted by the Nashville Distrect concluded that a new seepage cut-off wall was needed as the existing cut-off wall, installed in the 1970s, did not go deep enough and did not extend laterally far enough to intercept all major karst features The dam was classified as a ""Dam Safety Action Classification I (DSAC 1) – Urgent and Compelling,"" the highest risk under USAGE risk category rankings. Also in 2005, under a USAGE risk screening program of its entire dam portfolio, Wolf Creek was classified as a Dam Safety Action Classification 1-Urgent and Compelling, which put it in the highest category. In 2007, an Independent External Peer Review from outside USAGE, concluded there was compelling evidence that a piping failure mode had re-initiated and was in an ""advanced continuation"" stage of development.Impounding approximately 6 million acre-ft (7.4x102m3) of water at flood storage, Lake Cumberland is the largest reservoir east of the Mississippi River and ninth largest in the United States. It took advantage of the experience and innovation of contractors by soliciting technical proposals that were evaluated independent of cost. Those proposals deemed technically qualified and responsive then underwent a trade-off analysis between ccst and technical approach and a selection was made of the one deemed to give the best combination."

For some time, selenate has eluded water treatment by conven­tional means such as precipitation and clarification. This has been due to the nearly universal solubility of all oxidized sele­nium species, the low levels required for surface discharge, and almost identical chemical behavior to all forms of oxidized sul­fur. The last characteristic makes selenate particularly difficult to deal with in acid mine waters where sulfate can easily be on the order of one gram per liter. Approaches such as ion exchange or reverse osmosis often tum into total demineraliza­tion schemes for the sake of removing a "trace" selenium species that may be present on the order of 108 sulfate/selenate. Reduction of selenate to selenite or elemental selenium by chemical means has been relatively unresearched. Some limit­ed success has been reported (Murphy, 1988) using ferrous hydroxide as a reducing agent; however, the reaction time as reported is too slow to be useful in a practical plant design. One significant difference between selenate and sulfate is that selenate has been discovered to be reducible in acid solution by elemental iron when catalyzed by soluble copper. Since the +4 or zero valence states of selenium are rather easy to deal with by coprecipitation with iron salts or alum, the elemental iron dis­solved in the process contributes to the overall process by pro­viding sludge upon raising the pH that can be separated by con­ventional clarification. Commercial production of selenium using copper catalyzed reduction of selenite to selenium metal via sulfur dioxide is well established, however, at the < 5 ppb requirements for surface discharge this reduction process equili­brates at levels far too high to be useful to low level selenate removal criteria. The reaction reported herein uses elemental iron for reduction of selenate with copper acting either as a cata­lyst or as a coprecipitation agent. This method, employed with conventional sludging, clarification and filtration can provide an economic method to achieve non detectable selenium (< 0.005 mg/I). Iron consumptions for the conditions tested have been on the order of 3 lbs/1,000 gallons treated. This represents as little as $0.06 or $2.00 per 1,000 gallons based on using a scrap source of iron or the purchase of electrolytic iron for the process.

Austria.—Austria produced some 430 cisterns of 10,000 kg. each of crude oil of a 0.9428 sp. gr. during 1934. Gosting II well near Zis-tersdorf was placed on the pump in August and at the end of the year was still producing about three cisterns daily. This well is owned by the Erdöl-Produktionsgesellschaft while Gösting I is owned by Raky-Danubia. Only five wells were completed in the republic during the year. These accounted for 1783.5 meters of the 2225 meters drilled. The only producer completed was Gosting 11. At the close of the year, four rigs were in operation and one rigging up. At least 8 or 10 new wells are planned in Lower Austria for 1935. The European Gas & Electric Co. put its 6-km. gas line into operation in May and has sold 12,301,550 cu. m. of gas to the Vienna City Electric Works. A 2-km. pipe line was built from Gösting II to the railway loading rack near Zistersdorf. Hungary.—No oil or gas was produced except a small amount of gas trapped from flowing artesian wells. The Government completed and abandoned a 1500-m. hole at Tisztaberek in northeastern Hungary and is drilling at 967 m. near Bogáes, 120 km. northeast of Budapest. It is unofficially reported it plans to drill two new wells in 1935. The European Gas & Electric Co. has a rig up for a test at Mihalyi in Transdanubia. Czechoslovakia.—In Gbely (Egbell) there were produced 1283 cisterns of 10,000 kg. of 0.935 sp. gr. oil and a small amount of gas used for fuel. This field is operated by the Government; 17 shallow producing wells and three dry holes were drilled, with a total of 3351 m. of hole completed. In Hodonin (Goding) there were produced approximately 1300 cisterns of 10,000 kg. each of 0.91 sp. gr. oil and a small amount of gas used for fuel. The field is operated by the Apollo, which drilled four producing wells averaging 460 m. in depth, one small gas well of 550 m., one small gas well 260, and one dry hole 230 m. Two wells were deepened a total of 80 meters. The Government is drilling below 800 m. in a wildcat test in eastern Czechoslovakia near the Rumanian frontier.

In the paper, a comparison was made between flowsheets using the screen bowl centrifuge and disc filters, respectively, as the primary dewatering device. The authors very effectively show that by raising feed temperature, mechanical dewatering is enhanced through reduced viscosity of the water. When a final coal moisture of 10% is required, the net effect of heating the feed is a reduction in thermal requirements because of the lower evaporated load on the dryer. The flowsheet comparison on this, however, was not completely correct. Disc filters do not generally utilize enhanced mechanical dewatering through increased temperature. Horizontal belt filters, through the optimal use of steam heating of the filter cake, have shown significant cost reductions over disc filters where steam is not used. In addition, the authors forgot to mention that there is a certain fraction of the feed that is so fine that it cannot be recovered by the centrifuge economically. That is the function of the filtration device shown in [Fig. 4]. In subbituminous pipeline coals, this fraction represents more than 10% of the feed. Even after flocculation and belt pressing, the moisture content in the fine fraction is 30%-40. Recent tests on a subbituminous pipeline coal slurry, compared an Eimco-Extractor horizontal belt filter with the screen bowl centrifuge flowsheet shown in [Fig. 4]. Mechanical dewatering was enhanced through the use of a steam dry zone after the initial dewatering zone. Vacuum pump horsepower was reduced by more than 50% through the use of condensers, and heat recovery was utilized to minimize thermal costs. Thermal drying to 10% moisture by weight was required in both flowsheets. The 0.5 wt% fines in the filtrate were flocculated and recycled to the filter, thus eliminating the belt press and solids mixers. When the three major operating costs (which normally account for 50%-75% of the coal operating costs) of steam, electricity, and flocculants at current prices were calculated, the flowsheets utilizing the Eimco-Extractor had cost savings vs the centrifuge flowsheet of 89c/t (81c per st) of surface dry coal. This advantage increases with increasing thermal and electricity prices. I congratulate the authors for the strides made with the screen bowl centrifuge. However, filtration flowsheets continue to be improved and their simplicity and low thermal and electrical requirements should not be so quickly dismissed.

Mine operators often rely on mine rescue teams to save lives during an underground emergency such as an underground fire, explosion, roof fall or water innundation. It is extremely important that team members are provided with adequate exploration equipment and that training simulations are conducted in a realistic manner. A series of mine rescue training exercises was developed, conducted, and evaluated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Deep Mine Safety and several mining companies. The exercises were conducted at NIOSH’s Lake Lynn Laboratory and operating mines during 1995 to 1999 and resulted in improved technology and training for mine rescue teams. For example, existing technologies were identified to help rescue teams during exploration. These included various chemical light shapes and laser pointers to identify team members and mark crosscuts and mine materials, strobe lights for mapping out escapeways and marking crosscuts, and thermal imaging systems to see through smoke. A hands-free communication system showed potential for enhanced communications between team members and the fresh air base. Anew team lifeline that allows for flexibility of movement between team members was developed. A positive-pressure inflatable escape device (IED) was used to isolate the “hazardous” environment from fresh air and allow rescue team members to traverse through. An inflatable feed-tube partition that can rapidly block large openings such as underground passageways and simultaneously provide a feed-tube for high-expansion foam generators was also deployed for several simulations. During the simulations, mine rescue team members donned self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBA) and traversed more than 400-m of mine passageways filled with nontoxic smoke. Visibility ranged from 0.3 to 0.9-m. In one area of the mine, a kerosene heater was used to simulate a fire and reduce the oxygen concentration. In another area, a 1.5 pct methane zone was established. The team members searched for "victims,” administered first aid, mapped the passageways, built temporary stoppings, and ventilated the smoke-filled entries. Advanced training included the extinguishment of a conveyor belt fire in a surface fire gallery. Two teams, each carrying charged waterlines, were escorted into the fire gallery through both doors. These teams controlled the rollback smoke and extinguished 7 to 9-m of burning conveyor belt. Team members indicated that the exercises were extremely beneficial due to the realism of thetraining simulations.

"While serving as surgeon with rescue car No 11 of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the writer visited the principal metal-mining camps of Utah during the latter part of 1919. In visiting the mines, meeting and conversing with miners, and talking over the medical situation with physicians in the various camps, the number of cases of lead poisoning encountered was great enough to attract attention.With a view to procuring more definite information as to the number and distribution of cases of lead poisoning throughout the State, a study of the records of the State Board of Health was undertaken. Utah had no ordinance re¬quiring the reporting of occupational diseases, so it was not possible to secure data an cases A study of the mortality records by years gave the following results.:Year Deaths from lead poisoning.1910,11911,01912,21913,11914,61915,41916,11917,31918,11919,2These few deaths would seem to indicate a fairly low case rate, but when it is realized that lead poisoning is rarely an immediate cause of death and that the train of sequelae in this disease frequently leads to chronic involvemeets of the digestive, nervous, circulatory or genito-urinary systems, it is apparent that the number of deaths showing lead poisoning as the cause can not be taken as an index of the cases prevalent. The time elapsing between the presence of the active signs of lead poisoning and the terminal illness from pathologic conditions excited by lead absorption may be years, and the initial cause, lead poisoning, is frequently lost sight if entirely, hence the death certificate shows no evidence of the primary cause."

Outokumpu flash smelting of copper concentrates was introduced in 1949 and flash smelting of nickel concentrates in 1959, both at Harjavalta in southwest Finland. The first flash smelter outside Finland was started up in 1956 in Ashio, Japan. Between 1956 and the present about 25 flash smelters for copper, and nickel concentrates have been put into operation in different parts of the world. Outokumpu"s research organization has been highly involved in the development of flash smelting. For example, a direct blister flash smelting process was developed in 1975 and introduced in Glogów, Poland, in 1978, and another has been designed for Zaire. This straight metal process is based on low iron content of the concentrate, which reduces the amount of recycling slag copper. Additionally, the concentrates are rather low in impurities.
