California's Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA) was passed in 1975 to identify and protect mineral resources in areas of high land-use conflict and ensure reclamation of mined lands. Under SMARA, aggregate resource availability is quantified and compared to forecasted demand in specific market regions. Fifteen regions studied thus far cover 20,000 square miles and contain 50 billion tons of high-quality aggregate resources which have been legally designated as ?regionally significant?, providing a measure of protection previously unavailable. SMARA reports and State testimony at local hearings have supplied objective information and helped reduce conflict in mine-permitting decisions.

The relationship between coal characteristics and power plant performance has become a matter of increasing interest to utilities. This relationship can affect the value of coals, decisions as to coal washing, setting penalties for delivery of coal that fails to meet specifications, and justifying buying better coals (at higher costs) before public utility commissions. The study described in this paper was directed to identifying how coal characteristics impact on boilers and related coal and gas handling systems. TVA data for the period 1962-1980 was the basis for the study. Models were developed for boiler efficiency, boiler availability, and maintenance costs as a function of such coal characteristics as ash, sulfur, and moisture content and boiler age. Boiler load and maintenance efforts were considered as variables in some of the models, but were found not to be statistically significant. Although the results of this study are strictly applicable to only the TVA system, they can serve as guides or first approximations for other utilities.

The goal of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) coal preparation R&D program is to develop technology to reduce the ash and sulfur contents of United States coals to levels such that the resultant product can be formulated into a high- quality solid or slurry fuel that could replace oil or natural gas in both new and retrofit applications. The Coal Preparation program is implemented by the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC) and is conducted both in-house and by a cross section of industrial organizations, universities, and national laboratories.

Liquid ferrous silicates that are related to cop- per slags have been studied as media for the transfer of heat in pyrometallurgical processes. The effective thermal diffusivities have been measured from 1025Oto 1400°C, and values in the range of 0.004 to 0.007 cm2/ sec have been obtained. The heat-transfer characteristics of these slags have been determined by measuring the rise of temperature of a cold nickel sphere immersed in the liquid slag. The sphere is spun about its vertical axis to obtain a well characterized flow of liquid about the sphere. The principal barrier to the transfer of heat from the bulk slag to the metal sphere is a solid shell of slag that forms around the sphere and subsequently melts. It appears that the detailed nature of this shell is important to theheat- transfer process. A mathematical model is used to predict the rate of heating of the sphere, and to evaluate various aspects of the system that can influence the transfer of heat.

"Stoppings in coal mines serve, important and. vital functions, such as coursing the ventilating current, sealing off abandoned or dangerous workings, sealing fire areas, and separating mines at boundaries. Stoppings may hold back water, but normally that is not their function; their design is, or should be very different from that of a hydraulic dap which is designed to a definite load, often a very heavy one, from one direction over an indefinitely long period. Hence, a dam usually requires an arched structure to resist hydraulic pressure, and it must be massive to meet vertical stresses due to heavy ground pressure.Stoppings are designed primarily to resist a pressure applied laterally through air or gases. Their strength cannot be stated without specifying the direction of applied load. A stopping may be placed in stress by proof pressure subsequent to erection, through extraction of pillars in the vicinity which may act direct, or by squeezing the ribs or heaving the floor. These forces act more or less parallel to the faces of the stopping and may be very great but measures must be taken suitable to each case, and it is impossible to allow for these in general specifications other than to call for normally good construction. A stopping is principally designed to resist the action of forces at right angles to its face, such as the shocks of blasting, the pressure of gas from instantaneous violent out bursts such as have occurred in certain British Columbia coal mines, sudden compression of the air by great falls of roof in closed spaces, and at time pressures that accompany an explosion of either fire damp or coal dust or both. This paper deals with the tests of pressures of explosions only."

En este aspecto se revisa el código boliviano, cuyo reglamento es considerado no solo por sus jefes y trabajadores, sino por la autoridad gubernamental administrativa que los dirige. Los aspectos que comprenden la aplicación de este código-modelo tales como el uso de los consejos científicos de un comité de salud, el examen físico a los trabajadores y la estipulación de las facilidades y servicios entre trabajadores y jefes, permiten la formulación de un reglamento de salubridad más completo e integro para las grandes industrias. At the 1976 Annual Meeting of AIDE, Alan Merson reminded his audience that economic' success comes to those who understand things as they are, rather than as they have been or what ideology says they should be (1). He went on to say that, measured by this standard, the mining industry is in trouble. The mining firms had recognized long ago the importance of effective lobbying in Washington and the state capitals. But, he pointed out, those methods are nearly worthless anymore in coping with many land use problems because the critical decisions are likely to be made at the local level. There the tactics are far different as are the relations of the decisionmakers to the parties before then. Furthermore, in his estimation the trend is to leave land use regulation largely to the local level of government. All who are concerned for access to land for mineral development will be benefited by reading Professor Merson's paper lie is speaking effectively about the context of decisionmaking for specific cases, the shape of things in the here and now. There is, however, a longer-tern set of considerations that if pursued will be likely to foster the creation of public support for mining developments. At that sane meeting I spoke on two foundations of the long-term relationships: namely, the growth in requirements for minerals implied by projections of increasing consumption; and a rationale for fostering mineral exploration and development. I mentioned in passing the social decisionmaking process for public uses of land (2). This paper is intended as a complement. The growth of requirements for Minerals and the rationale for development based on the Entropy Law will be only mentioned. The main concern will be on the process of social decisionmaking in the context of access to land for mineral development.

The Bureau of Mines is currently developing methods for reclaiming the metal and mineral values contained in unburned urban refuse. One important phase of this research deals with recovering Mastic from shredded refuse using in electrodynamic separation process. The results of this study have indicated that mixed plastic concentrates analyzing 99.4 percent plastic can be consistently recovered from the light material fraction of shredded refuse, leaving a mixed paper traction analyzing 99.9 percent paper. Recovery of the plastic exceeds 99 percent.

The Devonian salt basin, which contains the Saskatchewan Potash deposits, extends from just east of the foothills in Alberta, north as far as the Peace River area, across Saskatchewan and into Manitoba as far east as Range 10 west of the First Meridian and south into Montana and North Dakota. The basin is closed everywhere except to the northwest. The known potash deposits are confined almost entirely to the Province of Saskatchewan, with the exception of a small area in western Manitoba bordering the Saskatchewan boundary. The following discussion will concern only the Saskatchewan part of the basin. The evaporite series in the basin is defined as the Prairie Evaporite Formation of the Elk Point Group, of Middle Devonian age. Recent work done by potassium-argon dating methods has indicated an Upper Middle Devonian (Givetian) age of from 265 to 347 million years for the potash. The Elk Point Group consists in ascending order of the Ashern, Winnipegosis and Prairie Evaporite Formations. The Ashern formation, sometimes called the Third Red Bed, consists of dolomitic shales or shaly dolomites. The Winnipegosis is a reef type dolomite, usually with good porosity, and in many cases oil-staining, although to date no production has been obtained. The Prairie Evaporite formation consists of anhydrite overlain by halite and finally, in Saskatchewan, by the potash beds. In almost all wells which have been cored for potash the lowest potash bed is underlain by one or two bands of anhydrtte, which are used as marker horizons. Cores from a few wells which cored to the bottom of the salt series have shown flecks of potash throughout the halite.

Investments in fuel minerals and non-fuel minerals by petroleum companies are not a new phenomena. During the past 25 years, oil firms have entered mining via the acquisition route as well as by the direct development of grassroots mines. In the early 1980s, the "merger mania" in the natural resource industries came to a head. Oil company takeovers of mining firms, as well as other mergers between oil producers, captured headlines repeatedly, and speculation ran wild as to who would next acquire whom. Table 1 summarizes leading mining company mergers in the past two decades. There are some special features to the latest round of minerals investments undertaken by oil companies. First, direct takeovers of mining companies have become the preferred means of entry into minerals, with entry from scratch being relegated to the sidelines. This was not always the case. While there are instances of oil firms buying coal and copper companies dating back to the 1950s and 1960s, most of the early minerals work by petroleum firms was from internally generated projects. When the oil companies first became involved in uranium, for example, the uranium mining industry was in its infancy. There was not much market structure to buy, and it was relatively easy for everyone to get into uranium on the ground floor.

The new combination gypsum plaster and gypsum wallboard plant of Compania Industrial Kaiser S.A., the first of its kind in Mexico went into production in April of 1969. This was approximately fourteen months from the signing of the formal order for the plant and equipment. Compania Industrial Kaiser S.A. is an affiliate of the Kaiser Gypsum Company in the United States and will market practically the same line of products and to the same standards as those produced in American plants. Located in the City of Puebla, the plant will readily service the major Mexican sales areas. It is approximately 85 miles away from Mexico City on a modern, four-lane, divided highway and distribution to other major consumer areas can be readily effected by the use of a good highway system, as well as, by rail. This, plant is the, sixteenth Gypsum Wallboard Mill supplied abroad by my company, United States Wallboard Machinery Company. Other installations are in Australia, New Zealand, Chile, England, Scotland, Ireland, Finland, South Africa, Latvia and Germany. Two new mills are on order; a small unit for Brazil and a comparatively large unit for New Zealand. All these mills have one thing in common with plants in the United States and Canada; they are equipped with standard, time-proven and tested equipment and they are designed in accor¬dance with the latest engineering thinking in order to produce efficiently, the highest quality product at lowest cost. They differ generally in the size of plant, the factors that brought them into being and in the market that they supply. I believe that these differences will be of interest to you.

Off-gas monitoring of experimental reactors give little information about intermediate reaction products and reflect chemical equilibria at reduced gas temperatures. A reactor design with optical access was designed and tested in order to be able to qualify and quantify gaseous species from their emission spectra. By use of a sequence of sapphire, UV fused silica and IR transparent sapphire and CaF2 windows and lenses optical access to a hot, maximum 1800 °C, reaction zone was gained. A cooled area behind the reaction zone was used as a background in order to avoid signal saturation from reactor walls. In addition to molecular emission spectra, atomic emission lines are used to characterize stable gas constituents and radicals. The setup has been designed for the study of methane dehydrogenation experiments in order to investigate the carbon activity of reduction of oxide with methane, but has also been used to monitor gaseous silicon suboxide.

THERE are about sixty bodies which chemists call elements ; the simplest forms of matter which they have been able to extract from the rocky crust of our earth, its waters, and its atmosphere. These substances are distributed in very unequal quantities, and in very different manners. As regards the frequency of these elements in nature, neglecting for the present those which constitute air and water, and confining ourselves to the solid matters of the earth's crust, there are a few which are exceedingly abundant, making up nine-tenths, if not ninety-five hundredths, of the rocks so far as known to us. The elements of which silica, alumina, lime, magnesia, potash, and soda are oxides, are very common, and occur almost everywhere. There are others which are much rarer, being found in comparatively small quantities. Many of these rarer elements are, however, of great importance in the economy of nature. Such are the common metals and other substances used in the arts, which occur in nature in quantities relatively very minute, but which have been collected by various agencies, and thus made available for the wants of man. It is chiefly of the well-known metals, iron, copper, silver, and gold, that I propose to speak to-night; but there are two other elements not classed among the metals, which I shall notice for the reason that their history is extremely important, and will, moreover, enable us to comprehend more clearly some points in that of the metals themselves. I speak of phosphorus and iodine. Young's modulus doto ore presented for W, Mo. Ta. V, Cr. Ni, Ti, and Zr as a function of temperature up to about 0.7 of the melting points. A plot of reduced temperature us reduced modulus produces a general correlation except for titanium and zirconium. Young's modudlus data for some representatiue commercial graphites are given up to 2400°C. All results were obtained from longitudinal resonance-frequency measzrrements of 4-in. long samples, corrected for simultaneously measured thermal expansion. Comparison of poly crystalline and single-crystal tungsten behavior indicates that all the observed modulus values are frequencv -dependent at the higher temperatures. STATIC measurements of elastic properties of materials at elevated temperatures are extremely difficult to make since the elastic behavior is obscured by relatively large first-stage creep effects. Dynamic methods which avoid this difficulty by utilizing the measurement of the resonance frequency of a simple vibrational mode have been described in the 1iterature.l-3 The authors have extended the operating temperature range of this type of measurement to above 2000°C and have described the equipment elsewhere.~ The Young's modulus data presented here were obtained with this equipment, using samples about 4 in. long and 1/4 in. diam, supported horizontally at the center and excited to the fundamental longitudinal resonance frequency. Young's modulus was calculated by the formula: E = 4f2f2p where E = Young's modulus, / = frequency, 1 = length, and p = density. Dilatometric data were obtained simultaneously by optical measurements of the change of length of the sample. For the metals tested, an attempt was made to obtain modulus values that would be representative of the pure, strain-free, randomly oriented material. All of the graphites studied exhibited a high degree of elastic anisotropy, while the method assumes an isotropic homogeneous material. However , when the values for Young's modulus obtained for AUC graphite were compared with those taken from static measurements at room temperature they were found to be only about 4 pet higher. This is excellent agreement considering the low precision of modulus calculations from stress-strain curves. The difficulty in using data of apparent Young's modulus for anisotropic materials arises when the attempt is made to use these data and shear-modulus data to obtain Poisson's ratio. The results are usually meaningless and sometimes absurd.' RESULTS Table I lists the sources, impurity content, thermal history, and dilatometric constants of the metal samples that were investigated. All the metal samples were tested under a vacuum of 1 to 5 x 10-5 Torr. Where our dilatometric data agreed with previously published data, the table lists the previous values and the literature reference. Where no reference is given, the constants were determined from our dilatometric data. Table II presents the modulus data in units of millions of psi as a function of temperature in degrees centigrade. The numbers were obtained from curves fitted to the experimental data. For some types of calculations, such as those attempting to correlate creep data, the slope of the modulus curve is of interest, and this information also is reported in Table 11. It is always tempting to try to fit physical-property data into some general pattern and then use this pattern to predict the behavior of other similar materials. The general pattern for an elastic modulus of a metal seems to be a linear deoro- with increasing temperature Over the range between 0.1 and 0.4 of the melting temperature, then a progressive1y decreasing value up to the melting point. Substantial evidence indicates that many petroleum producing horizons contain naturally occurring, ordered fracture systems and that within a particular geologic zone, vertical fractures induced in wellbores often will be directed along a particular compass direction. Both conditions will seriously alter the fluid displacement behavior within reservoirs. In this study the effect of induced fracture orientation and length on sweep efficiency is determined for a five-spot pattern. In general, it is assumed that all wells are fractured and directed along the same compass direction. Using the electrical analog to steady state, two-dimensional fluid flow in porous media, boundary conditions are obtained from which flood fronts are tracked numerically. The numerical computations require a particle tracking routine for approximating flood front histories. It is shown that recovery is sensitive to the length and orientation of fractures for the pattern studied. with the proper design of fracture-pattern systems, recovery can be enhanced considerably. INTRODUCTION Hydraulic fracturing introduced in 1949l gave the industry a rather inexpensive means of increasing the fluid injection or production capacity of wells. It has been used with particular success to increase the production rate of wells completed in tight formations, such as in western pennsylvania2 where producers have fractured in depleted or near-depleted fields and observed economic responses. Once the natural energy declines in such a reservoir where all wells have been fractured, waterflooding is generally suggested as means of further increasing recovery. Of the dual objective sought in waterflooding — high injectivity and high breakthrough sweep efficiency — the former condition can be obtained if all wells in the flood pattern are fractured; the latter condition should depend on the nature of the fracture system. Considerable theoretical work has been published on the nature of fractures induced in boreholes.3-5 Although discussion persists concerning the possibility of forming a horizontal fracture at a given point within the wellbore, it is generally conceded that only vertical fractures will develop below a given depth, i.e., where the fracturing Pressure is less than the overburden load. Given the fact that fractures will be vertical in most cases of interest, it is also important to know whether there is order to fracture orientations within a given geological region. Kehle has suggested that in tectonically relaxed areas of uncomplicated geology, the stresses are fairly uniform and all fractures in the region should be parallel.5 Dunlap arrived at a similar conclusion in a theoretical investigation of localized stress conditions surrounding the borehole.6 He concluded that most vertical fractures are propagated in a preferred azimuthal direction. Fraser and Pettitt, in extending these theoretical suggestions to a specific field case, used an impression packer to record both a vertical fracture and the orientation of this fracture in the wellbore of a well in the Howard Glasscock field, Tex.7 Use of this information enhanced the waterflood recovery of the field. Anderson and Stahl also used impression packers on three fractured wells in the Allegheny field. N. Y.. and found that the fractures were oriented more or less along the same compass direction.8 Orientation of the fractures in this manner depends on the stress condition within the formation during fracturing. Equilibria involving Cu-Pt alloys, copper oxides, and atmospheres of known ox2gen pressures have been determined at 1000' and 1200 C. The data obtained have been used to calculate activity-composition relations in the alloys. A moderate negative deviation from ideality is found. At high copper concentrations, the results of the present study are in good agreement with those of previous investigators, whereas at low copper concentrations the activities obtained in this investigation are slightly higher than those reported previously. The present study is part of a research program dealing with the determination of phase relations and thermodynamic properties of copper-containing systems at high temperatures. The information available for such systems is very scanty, particularly for copper oxides and their combinations with other oxide components. Platinum is commonly used as a container in studies of oxide equilibria. To evaluate quantitatively the extent of reaction between the oxide and the container, a knowledge of activity-composition relations in Cu-Pt alloys is necessary. Such data are not available for Cu-Pt alloys in the temperature range of particular interest in the present research program, and particularly for alloys low in copper. Studies of various aspects of the systems Cu-Pt and Cu-0 have been reported in previous literature. The system Cu-Pt is known1 to form a continuous solid-solution series above 812.C, whereas ordered phases are present in certain composition ranges at lower temperatures. Thermodynamic data for the system have been reviewed by Hultgren et al.,' who presented free energies of mixing at 65Oo C, mainly derived from electromotive force cell measurements by Weibke and Matthes.3 Enthalpies of mixing at 640°C have been obtained by Oriani and Murphy4 with liquid tin calorime-try. Their results differ considerably from those derived from the temperature dependence of the data of Weibke and Matthes. Thermodynamic data for the disordered alloys have been obtained by Assayag,5 and more recently by Schmahl and Minzl,6 by Myles and Darby,7 and by McCormack, Myers, and Saxer.8 The two latter sets of data7'' became available after the present study was completed. In the system Cu-0+ two oxides are stable at high temperatures, CuO and CuzO+ each having only minor deviations from stoichiometry. Equilibria in the liquidus temperature region of the system Cu2O-CuO have been studied by Roberts and systemsmyth,9'10CuzO-CuO by Vogel and ocher,I1 by Osterwald,12 and recently the the present authors.13 The system is of the eutectic type with a eutectic temperature of 1083.C The composition of the eutectic liquid corresponds to Xcu0 = °.44, and the oxygen pressure of the coexisting gas phase is Po2 = 0.55 atm.13 Equilibrium oxygen pressures for coexistence of solid CuO and solid Cu2O have been determined by Schmahl and Muller,l4 by Gadalla, Ford, and white,l5 by Bidwell,16 and recently by the present authors.13 There is reasonably good agreement among the various sets of data. Free energies of formation of Cu2O(s) from the elements have been derived by Tretyakov,17 by Bidwell,16 by Kiukkola and wagner,18 by Pal'guev and Neuimin," and by Steele and Alcock,20 There is particularly good agreement among the latter three1'-20 sets of data. A magnetic field has been used to damp out liquid convection during the solidification of castings. Ingots of Al-2 pct Cu were poured from various sperheats (10" to 65°C) into a room-temperature graphite mold located between the poles of an electromagnet. The effect on ingot structure of varying the strength and time of application of the magnetic field was investigated, and the results are interpreted in light 01- current theories of ingot structure. In the solidification of alloy systems, thermal gradients in the melt and differences in density of the constituents are expected to produce convective motion in the liquid. The thermal convection caused by temperature gradients should be present during the freezing of both alloys and pure materials, while the solute convection caused by density differences should be of concern only for alloys. The possible influence of this natural convection on the structure of castings has been discussed by Ruddle,' Chalmers, and Tiller. More recently, an experimental investigation of such effects was carried out by Cole and Bolling. These workers took stationary molds containing lead- and tin-based alloys and. using a brine solution. quenched them from various superheats above their respective liquidus temperatures. When grids were placed across the mold diameter to suppress convection, the grid region was later observed to contain a larger percentage of columnar grains than other parts of the casting or than similar castings poured without the grids present. From thermocouple measurements, they found the temperature in the grid region to be higher than that in the region outside the grids throughout the freezing process, and concluded that convection should be an important mode of heat transfer in normal castings. In addition to such convection arising from thermal gradients or differences in density of the constituents, a further source of convective motion, which we shall call "momentum convection", may be particularly important in small (laboratory-size) castings. By this term we refer to the convective motion produced in the initial pouring process, a motion which is damped out as the linear momentum and angular momentum of the liquid are dissipated. Besides these sources of convection, which are present to some extent in all castings. external influences may also be effective in producing convective motion. Examples of such "forced" convection which have been discussed in the literature include stirring the melt, shaking the mold, rotating the mold, and so forth The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of convection on the structure of castings poured into a cold mold. The technique of magnetic damping was previously used by Utech and F1emings" in their study of convective effects on impurity banding and other substructure in alloy crystals grown unidirectionally from the melt. In their investigation, fields as small as 200 gauss were found to be effective in damping the convection currents which influence the banding. This paper presents the depletion-performance correlations developed using data from PVT studies and well-completion tests of 27 rich gas-condensate and volatile-oil reservoir fluids. The PVT behavior for each fluid war determined experimentally in the laboratory, and the depletion performance of each fluid was then calculated. Well-completion test data consisting of reservoir pressure and temperature, initial total gas-oil ratio, and stock-tank oil gravity were used with the depletion-performance data to develop general performance correlations. Three correlations are presented. The first equation shows the empirical relation of gas in place per barrel of hydrocarbon pore space with reservoir pressure and temperature, and initial total gas-oil ratio. The second equation is the correlation of stock-tank oil in place per barrel of hydrocarbon pore space. The third equation relates stock-tank oil production (to 500-psia depletion pressure) with pressure, temperature and oil gravity. All three correlations are also presented in convenient graphical form. Gas production to 500-psia depletion pressure is approximately 92.6 per cent of the gas in place for each fluid, so no correlation was developed for gas production. INTRODUCTION The rate of discovery of shallow, low-pressure and low-temperature oil reservoirs in the United States has been declining in recent years. For this reason, the search for oil has gone to greater depths where high pressures and temperatures are encountered. A high-pressure and high-temperature reservoir is the environment in which many rich gas condensates and highly volatile oils are found. Because of this trend, the performance prediction of such reservoirs has become an important task of the reservoir engineer. The need and usefulness of a performance correlation based on field data that are available from the usual well-completion tests have previously been established. These earlier attempts have shown that the phase behavior of rich gas-condensate systems and volatile-oil systems can be correlated with fluid properties, pressure and temperature. However, very little information on gas-condensate depletion performance5 was available at the time of these earlier attempts. The availability of more recent data has made possible the development of an improved correlation. The data, as listed in Tables I and 2, are for 25 gas-condensate and two volatile-oil systems that were studied. The problem was to correlate the data for in-place fluids and the production data with the initial total gas-oil ratio, initial reservoir pressure and temperature, and stock-tank oil gravity. These correlations were obtained by multiple regression analysis, whereby the data were fitted to an equation by the method of least squared error. BASIS OF THE CORRELATIONS 1. The data used in the development of these correlations were obtained from depletion-performance calculations6 and well-test or production measurements. 2. All of the independent variables used in the correlations are available from the usual well-test completion data. 3. The reservoir volume considered is 1 bbl of hydrocarbon pore space (HCPS). 4. The gas-oil ratio used is the total standard cubic feet of gas (at 14.7 psia, 60F) coming off the entire separator train per barrel of stock-tank oil. This minimizes the effect of separator conditions which might vary from system to system. 5. The correlated pressures are the actual reservoir pressures which might or might not be the saturation pressure of the reservoir fluid.

"Electron spin resonance (ESRJ spectrum of the hydroxyl (· OH) radical spin adduct with .the spin trap 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrrolintt-N-oxide has been obtained in suspensions of freshly ground quartz particles. The concentration of the spin adduct (and hence of the • OH radicals) increases with the amount of grinding. The dust's potential for the generation of the· OH radicals is maximum when fresh (i.e., immediately after grinding) and decreases to 50% in about a day on storage in air. Studies involving metal chelates .indicate that the • OH radical formation involves mainly the silica surface and H20 rather than the Fenton reaction. The results suggest that hydroxyl radical reaction(s) could be important in the lipid peroxidation and fibrogenicity by quartz dust, particularly .in acute silicosis. INTRODUCTIONIn this paper we report on our electron spin resonance (ESR) detection of the formation of hydroxyl (·OH) radicals in aqueous suspensions of freshly crushed quartz particles. This work was undertaken with a view to find possible clues to the role of free radicals in the pathogenesis of quartz-induced fibrogenicity, commonly known as silicosis. We noted that while silicosis is one of the major health hazards in coal and mineral industries, the mechanism by which the quartz particles exert their toxic action on cells and the process(es) by which these actions progress to fibrogenesis are still poorly ·understood (Reiser and Last, 1979; Singh and .Rahman, 1987). It is generally thought, nevertheless, that the action of quartz particles on the biological membranes is the starting point of the silicotic process (Parazzi et - al., 1968). A possible clue to the mechanism of the membrane damage by quartz particles, in terms of the role of oxygenated free radicals, is suggested by the following observations. A suspension of quartz particles in contact with alveolar macrophages has been reported (Gabor et al., 1975; Koike et al., 1982) to initiate an enhancement of lipid peroxidation, defined broadly as the oxidative deterioration of polyunsaturated components of lipids. Hydroxyl (· OH) radicals are known to be capable of peroxidation by abstracting hydrogen atoms from cell-membrane lipids (Halliwell and Gutteridge, 1985) and of initiating lipid peroxidation in lysosomal membranes. (Fong et al., 1973). Arong other lines, it is known that exposure of cell membranes, fatty acids, and unsaturated food oils to ionizing radiation, which generates· OH radicals, causes rapid peroxidation (Halliwell and Gutteridge, 1985). Thus • OH radicals (and also other oxygenated species such as Oi, 10 2, and H20 2) might be expected to play a role in the toxicity of quartz. Earlier studies of the aqueous chemistry of quartz suspensions have reported detection of H2O 2 (Kalbanev et al., 1980), implicating the formation of ·OH radicals as transient species. However, we are not aware of any report of the detection of • OH radicals in quartz reactions, and thus the present study was undertaken. Since it-is known that, because of their high reactivity (hence short lifetime) in aqueous media, the • OH radicals cannot be detected via ESR directly (Finkelstein et al., 1980; Buettner, 1982) we have used .ESR combined with the spin-trap methodology (Finkelstein et al., 1980) for studying the· OH formation. The results show that· OH radicals are indeed formed in aqueous suspensions of freshly ground quartz; thus pointing to ·a possible new clue to the cytotoxicity of freshly formed quartz particles and thereby to silica fibrogenicity."
