Techniques utilized to incorporate geological data in computer modeling and ore reserve estimation have undergone considerable evolution during the past fifteen years. Computer analysis and evaluation of two precious metal deposits are presented as examples of innovative computer techniques developed at Asarco. The first is a gold deposit occurring in a steeply dipping Pre-Cambrian greenstone sequence. The second is a manto-like manganiferous silver deposit occurring in a relatively flat sequence of Late-Paleozoic sediments. In both deposits, four sub-horizontal zones of geological influence are evaluated.

The Bureau of Mines was created in 1910 by an act of Congress and subsequently directed to: "...conduct inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining, and the preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances with a view to improving health conditions, and increasing safety, efficiency, economic development, and conserving resources through the prevention of waste ..." Under this broad charter, the Bureau's responsibilities have changed and grown from an almost exclusive concern with coal and coal mine safety to the present emphasis on a full spectrum of mineral producing and consuming problems. In the past 30 years, the domestic consumption of coal, oil, gas, metals, and industrial minerals has more than quadrupled, in parallel with the rapid and enormous growth in industrial production. Of the scores of metals and nonmetals essential to the Nation's progress and security, many are scarce and difficult to wrest from domestic sources. Reserves of some ores are dwindling. Available ore resources are becoming leaner and more difficult to treat. In recognition of this many faceted problem, the Bureau has engaged in a continuing quest for new and improved technology to enable economic exploitation of marginal minerals and fuels, to find substitutes for minerals in short supply, and to create better materials to meet the expanding and diverse requirements of the growing economy. The current central concern of the Bureau is focused on meeting projected fuel, metal, and mineral demands at the lowest real cost by recovery from available resources by new and improved technology that minimizes waste, hazards, and social and environmental problems.

Lithium bearing lepidolites from three deposits in the province of Goias in Brazil were investigated to determine whether there is a correlation between the lithium content of the mineral and the colour of lepidolite and associated tourmaline. Such a correlation can be a useful guide to field geologists for outlining high grade ore zones. It was found that mauve-pink lepidolite associated with pink tourmaline, and brownish lepidolite associated with black tourmaline have high lithium contents, but the colour of lepidolite is not due to lithium. The pink colour of lepidolite and tourmaline is likely to Mn3+, and the brownish tint of lepidolite and black colour of tourmaline to Fe3+. Lepido lites appear to be lithium-rich when the lepidolite and associated tourmaline contain relatively high amounts of Mn3+ and/or-Fe3+.

It is generally accepted, that oxygen is a necessary reagent for the flotation of galena with xanthate. Recent measurements have shown (1) that under plant conditions oxygen may be in a short supply to the extent that it limits the rate of flotation. Thus, it becomes important to define the exact role of oxygen and establish a model for the rational design and control of flotation separations, involving oxygen as a reagent. All theories or, the flotation of galena assign oxygen the role of an oxidant. However, they disagree on a number of questions: 1) Is the galena or the xanthate being oxidized? 2) Is a lead dixanthate or dixanthogen the actual collector? 3) Is the oxidation process in which oxygen participates of a chemical or an electrochemical nature? The last question arises from the observation (2) that an anodic bias as well as oxygen will make a galena surface hydrophobic in the presence of xanthate. Theories which are based an the premise that the influence of oxygen is of an electrochemical nature offer elegant models of galena flotation. However, full advantage has not been taken of available electrochemical techniques to discriminate between theories and this is the area towards which this research has been directed (3).

Geologic features such as structure (faults, folds, fractures, etc.), water bearing zones, aquifers, pemeability variations, and porosity variations are important for mine planning and in situ energy recovery processes. Features important for planning a mine will be important for planning the recovery of energy by in situ processes. Various geophysical techniques might be used to obtain the necessary geologic information. In this paper, case histories will be discussed of the use of electromagnetic geophysical surveys at a potential underground coal gasification site and a potential tar sand oil recovery site to obtain pertinent geologic information. Results show that the controlled source audio- frequency magnetotelluric technique shows promise for mapping faults and natural fracture systems when there is a sufficient resistivity contrast.

One of the most important fundamental characteristics of iron ore pellets is their porosity. This importance arises from the fact that the pores are the busy avenues whereby many changes are brought about in the life and form of the pellet from the time it is made until the iron it contains emerges as a molten stream from the blast furnace. As a green iron ore pellet is first heated in the drying cycle of a typical heat-hardening process, the pores act as conduits to allow the escape of steam from the water or vapor from the oil which served as binders to hold the green pellet together. After the release of the steam (or oil vapor) the pores then act as conduits whereby oxygen can enter the pellets to 1) convert magnetite (Fe304) to hematite (Fe203), if appropriate, and 2) promote solid state grain growth between adjacent particles of iron ore. The rate of oxidation and the rate of grain growth are directly related to pore size' and pore size distribution. Rate of oxidation is also directly influenced by length of pore and length of pore is obviously related to pellet diameter. It is well to keep in mind that the heat-hardening process does not harden the mineral grains themselves. What it does is weld them together to change the green pellet from a doughy mass, composed of thousands of tiny individual particles, into a strong, intergrown monolithic structure. In the blast furnace the pores again act as conduits for gases, but in this case they trans¬port reductants such as hydrogen (H2) and carbon monoxide (C0) which remove most of the oxygen from the ore. Rate of reduction is also directly related to pore size and pore size distribution.

The basic part of solar water heaters is the collector and the main functional part of the collector is the absorber layer. In this work, a commercial locally available black painting (PACEN code 10382 colour 890), used for swimming pools solar heating, was modified by adding nano-graphite dispersion. The effect of nano-graphite particles percentage on the spectral absorbance of the material was examined on samples containing two values of 1.5 and 2.5% nano-graphite particles by weight. Fourier transform spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis was also used to identify the functional groups in the developed material. A simple experimental setup was designed to evaluate the performance of the developed nanodispersed selective coating polymeric based material, by measuring the increase in temperature of circulating water. It was shown that adding 1.5–2.5% nano-graphite particles to a polymer based black coating causes an increase in the optical absorptance, and an increase in the circulating water temperature.

The gas-based CO reduction of Panzhihua vanadium titanomagnetite concentrate from 1100°C- 1250°C was investigated in this paper. The reduction degree increased with increasing temperature and increasing reduction time. At a temperature of 1250°C and a reduction time of 20 minutes, the metallisation degree reached 92%. The iron-titanium oxide phase transformation during reduction process was Fe2.75Ti0.25O5→Fe2.5Ti0.5O4→FeTiO3→FeTi2O5 according to the X-ray diffraction analysis. The SEM and map scan by energy spectrum of results of reduced samples at different temperatures indicated that the metallic iron particle size increased gradually as the reduction temperature increased. High temperature mechanical properties of 50Cr5MoV roll steel was investigated by Gleeble 1500 thermal simulator testing machine The morphology, composition and microstructure of fracture surface were observed and analyzed by OM, SEM and EDS The results are indicative of that, there are two brittle temperature zones of 50Cr5MoV roll steel at the temperature of 600°C~950°C and 1300°C~1450°C, respectively. The section shrinkage rate is less than 60% The fracture mode changes from mixed ones dominated by intergranular to toughness transgranular one with the increase of temperature at the range of 650°C~1300°C. The fracture is along the solid--liquid phase at the range of 1300°C~ melting point It is crucial to formulate the 50Cr5MoV casting technology, to prevent the cracks and improve the quality of 50Cr5MoV roll steel.

The vector sum peak particle velocity (PPV) of blast vibrations describes the blast vibration intensity more completely than the PPV of a single component waveform. It is more logical to use a vector sum PPV as a vibration limit than using a single component PPV. In 1980 the USBM recommended the frequency related peak particle velocity criterion. So far this method has been only applied to single component waveforms, but not to the vector sum PPV since there is no method available to associate a frequency to the vector sum PPV. The present paper describes a method to define a principal frequency associated with vector sum PPV. The method is based on the weighted average of the principal (zero-crossing) frequencies of the three tri-axial components at the time of the PPV.

Flat jack stress determinations in selected colliery roadways have revealed a range of measured stress from 330-p.s.i. tension to 3,750 p.s.i. compression. Photoelastic examination of loaded plastic and actual rock mo.odel mine openings has shown that the primary horizontal stress required to attain these measured stresses would be from one to three times the superincumbent vertical load.Examination of roof movement with a. borehole oxtensumeter and a series of anchors at various horizons to 30 feet in a. vertical roof borehole showed that when a standing face waa.s advanced the roofmovement was practically confined to the lower two feet. The ma.j ority of this movement occurred during the 36 hours after mining at this face commenced.The use of a. radioactive isotope and a. scintillation counter in a. pair of parallel bcreholes promises to be sensitive and accurate method of roof bedding plane crack detection.

A vacuum silicon thermal reduction lithium process is developed in present work which used lithium hydroxide, alumina and calcium oxide as raw materials. The process contains two steps, which are that Li5AlO4 clinker is prepared in ambient environment, and that metal lithium is extracted from Li5AlO4 clinker with ferro-silicon alloy as reductant in vacuum. On the basis of thermodynamic analysis and investigative experiments, feasibility of this process is proved. The results show that Li5AlO4 can be generated by calcination lithium hydroxide and alumina, the burning loss is above 31% under the conditions of calicination temperature above 750℃ and time more than 90min. The main phases of calcination product are Li5AlO4 and CaO. When the calcination product is reduced by ferro-silicon alloy in vacuum, the lithium reduction ratio can be over 80% under the conditions of reduction temperature 1200℃ and reduction time 60min.

The anomaly ratio is obtained by dividing the analyzed value of an element by the anomaly threshold value of the element. The sum of anomaly ratios for all anomalous elements in a sample may be compared with similar sums for other samples, so that the samples having the greatest anomaly-ratio totals can be recognized easily. In partial or full-suites-of-ore-elements the use of anomaly ratios is more meaningful than analyzed values because the ratios quickly indicate anomalous elements and call attention to samples and localities that should be investigated.

The Anaconda Minerals Company operates a molybdenite and copper producing mine and mill facility near Tonopah, Nevada. Included with the milling facility is a ferric chloride leach plant for removal of copper mineralization from the molybdenite concentrates. Discussed are the engineering and construction schedules associated with the leach plant. In a recently completed research project for the U.S. Bureau of Mines - Twin Cities Research Center, a computerized costing procedure for uranium in situ leach mining was developed by the NUS Corporation. This costing procedure, termed a cost model, employs a process engineering approach for estimating total project costs as well as equipment and manpower requirements for uranium in situ leaching operations in either Texas or Wyoming. 80th capital and operating costs are generated by the model along with the overall production cost/pound U3O8 subject to a known rate of return. Conversely, rate of return on equity can be solved for, subject to a given price of yellowcake. During the course of the research effort, this cost model was applied 50 typical site conditions in Texas and Wyoming. Sensitivity rests were conducted for numerous key parameters to determine the cost influence attributable to incremental changes In parameter values. The results of these sensitivity tests along with a description of the in situ leaching cost model have been documented as Bureau of Mines, Mineral Research Contract Report No. J019912, "Cost and Sensitivities Analysis for Uranium In Situ Leach Mining," dated March 1981.
