The Indian Head fine has been in existence since 1922. For over 56 years there have been North Dakota people mining coal at this same location. The area affected will fit inside a circle 5 km in diameter, and the coal is lignite. The seam thickness has varied from 2.4 m to 3.65m, and the overburden from 6 m to 30 m in depth. me Lignite coal which is being mined at the Indian Head Mine is from 15.8 x l0 6 to 16.7 x 10 6 J per kg; it has a moisture content of 33 to 38%; an ash content of 5 to 10%; and a sulfur content of from 0.5 to 0.7%. The moisture content and the fact that we crush the coal co a top size of 14 cm x 0, are two of the characteristics or the product which cause it to freeze and remain inside of the railroad cars on the slope sheets. The market for the coal initially was almost entirely local coal sales. That is, coal was sold to people in the area who used the lignite to heat their homes, stores, offices, schools, and churches. Back in the early 1920's, there were no stoker-fed boilers, or pulverized fuel boilers, as we have in today?s marketplace. Basically, all of the coal was sold as lump coal, pieces about 30 to 35 cm square, to be used in furnaces: and nut coal with a top size of about 7.5 cm to 10 cm to be used in the old kitchen cookstove. All of the coal fines, less than 5 cm, were screened out and layed onto a pile. There was no market for the smaller sizes of the lignite coal. It has been our experience that when the coal is in lumps or chunks larger than 7.5 cm to 10 cm, there is a very slight possibility of freezing. That is the chunks themselves freeze, but by their nature, they do not cling to one another or form large masses of frozen material which are difficult to remove from the slope sheers of the railroad cars.

The development of large quantities of ground water for any major use in an area is always of environmental concern to representatives of regulatory groups, citizens, agricultural and industrial users. From these concerns, state and federal congressional representatives receive a variety of impulses from their constituents and in turn begin a series of questions upon which to-base appropriate legislative actions. The kaolin industry in Georgia is substantial to the economy and the welfare of an important segment of east-central Georgia. It uses large quantities of water for processing. This constitutes an important source of income and tax revenue. Pumping test procedures to provide an accurate and efficient dewatering scheme have been developed and carried out at a number of mines in the kaolin district of Georgia. This paper highlights one such test and is directed at an assessment of the impact of this industry on ground water supplies of an area.

This paper discusses the longwalling practices used at the San. Francisco Mine of Compania Minera Autlan in Mexico, in. the mining of a sedimentary, manganese deposit. Bethlehem. Steel Company is a part owner of this property. The San. Francisco Mine is located approximately 580 miles west of Mexico City, on the outskirts of the town of Autlan, in the State of Jalisco. The ore is shipped from the port of Manzanillo 120 miles southwest of Autlan. The mining method is a variation of the longwall retreat system, using friction. props that, until recently, had been used only in coal mining operations of Europe and the United States. However, due to the structure of the ore body and the modified longwall system that is practiced, there exists some unusual variations, such as: .1) friction props set by a mechanical two-step lifting device, 2) drilling and blasting, against the friction props, 3) a highly fractured and undulating, volcanic tuff roof; 4) displacement faults-up to 5 meters, and 5) a relatively stable, irregular floor.

Various chemicals, including compounds of copper and lead, were added to a mixture of No. 2 and No. 6 fuel oils that was fired in an experimental furnace. Tests were made to determine (1) the effectiveness of these chemicals in removing soot deposits on probes devised to simulate heat-transfer surfaces in boilers and (2) the effectiveness of the chemicals in preventing the deposition of soot on the probe surface. Test conditions were regulated so that the temperature of the products of combustion adjacent to the probes was in the range of 625° to 700° F. The clean-metal temperatures of the air-cooled probes were comparable with the water-tube temperatures in boilers operated at 40 to 100 p.s,i.g. The dosages of the fuel oil additives used in these tests were generally larger than those usually recommended for most proprietary compounds.

This late 1979 Bureau of Mines report presents current stocks and monthly consumption rates for Guyanese refractory bauxite (GRB), with emphasis on the impact of the GRB shortage on the refractory and downstream industries, general background material, and an evaluation of the situation resulting from the strike of Guyanese bauxite workers during the summer of 1979. A study by the Bureau indicated that industry stocks contained little more than a month's supply of GRB--30,000 calcined short tons (CST), at present consumption rates of 25,000 CST per month. The report was requested by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FW) in response to refractory industry requests that the Government release GRB from the National Stockpile to minimize forecasted industry problems. The report traces the historical innovations in the high-alumina and/or bauxite-type refractory products industry, eventually leading up to fabrication of modern, high-quality firebrick and monolithic refractories.

Traditionally, mine drainage systems have not received the high level of emphasis on careful engineering design which has been rendered to many of the other auxillary operations. This may be due, in part, to the situation-response approach toward dealing with an influx of water. When the installed system becomes inadequate, costly alterations to the pump, such as staging or speed increases, are considered expedient solutions. In order to rectify this situation, computer-aided solutions to mine drainage problems could represent an efficient alternative to the methods presently used. This paper will consider the application of microcomputer technology to mine drainage problems and will show how the relative economy and convenience of microcomputers can make them become valuable analytic tools at any mine site.

Chemisorbed oleate films on the surfaces of fluorite, barite, and calcite were studied by means of infrared spectrophotometry. Evidence is presented which indicates the mineral anions, i.e., fluoride, sulfate, and carbonate, are displaced from the mineral surfaces as a result of the adsorption from aqueous solutions. Also, chemisorption reactions between oleic acid and fluorite or calcite occurred spontaneously in the absence of water. Carbon dioxide was identified as a reaction product when dry calcite was contacted with oleic acid. There was no evidence of reaction between oleic acid and barite in the absence of water.

The electrodeposition characteristics of seven binary alloys of titanium have been investigated. The object of the electrorefining experiments with an alloy was to determine the efficiency of titanium separation from individual alloying elements under established conditions. Reported results are only indicative. It is conceivable that numerous duplications of tests might give average maximums that would vary from those noted in this report; however, in the few tests that were repeated, the magnitude of transfer of the alloying elements was of the same order. The results detailed herein are for a given set of conditions. Many combinations of operating variables are possible, and the results achieved under different conditions probably would differ from those reported.

The INRED process has been developed step by step by Boliden since 1972 at MEFOS, the Foundation for Metallurgical Research, at Lulea in Sweden. The demonstration - plant is number five in this series. The purpose of this plant, which has a nominal capacity of 60,000 tonnes per year of hot metal is to: 1) prove the process on a sufficiently large scale to provide the basis for construction of production plants, 2) test various kinds of raw materials on behalf of licensees, 3) train operators of the first production plant, 4) develop the process further for special applications.

This study investigated flotation of phosphate from a low-medium grade 8-12% P2O5, 65-73% SiO2 sedimentary phosphate ore from Kropz Elandsfontein (herein referred to as Elandsfontein) in South Africa. Quantitative evaluation of minerals by scanning electron microscopy (QEMSCAN) was used to determine apatite grain size distribution, liberation and mineral association in the F2 horizon sample. The mineralogy indicated that apatite was liberated and for the Elandsfontein plant to operate at the design throughput, the flotation feed has to be milled to a coarse grind ranging between 300 μm and 425 μm. Reverse flotation process routes using varying reagent dosages, and flotation feed top sizes that could possibly yield a final product of 31% P2O5,10% SiO2 at a reasonable +70% P2O5 recovery were investigated. Based on the results, a split circuit of coarse (-300+212μm) flotation and fine (-212+20μm) flotation, was mostly preferred as compared to treating the whole ore. A final combined concentrate of 31% P2O5 and 10% SiO2 with P2O5 recovery of 84% could be produced from the reverse split circuit. The robustness of reverse flotation for both coarse and fine fractions was further investigated. Reverse flotation of the fines fraction was found to be robust and produced a final product of 31% P2O5. It was however more challenging to achieve the required product grade and recoveries on the coarser fraction (-425+212μm), suggesting that reverse circuit was not adequately robust at fractions coarser than 300μm. Acid mine drainage is a serious water pollution problem, for its contaminants will eventually effect the quality of the receiving streams. According to the Appalachian Regional Commission (1969)1, 10, 500 miles of streams have been polluted by mine drainage, and 70 percent of this acid pollution is accounted for by underground mines. Due to the severe damage to aquatic life, to recreational and industrial use, and to domestic water supply, more stringent mining and anti-pollution laws have been legislated and coal mine operators are required to treat the mine water discharges to meet the minimum standards. For years now, abatement and treatment methods have been extensively studied. Progress reports presented in the Fourth Symposium on Coal Mine Drainage Research, 1972 1 suggest that a thorough investigation and understanding of the basin discharge is necessary in order to cope with the mine drainage problem. The extent of mine water discharge contamination can be considered as a function of the basin streamflow and acid generation load.' A conservative treatment cost estimation these days is $0.40 per 1, 000 gallons for water with 100 ppm iron, 500 ppm acidity. These figures need not include collection and pumping costs nor the cost of dispersing of chemical waste by-products. To achieve optimal abatement and treatment of mine drainage, predictions of the quantity and quality of mine water discharges are needed. Basin discharge is a continuous process and it can be considered as a. macro-system. This system can be subdivided into micro-systems to describe the various mine discharge .types in the basin. The mining activities could produce acid water discharges from deep mines, stripmines, or associated gob piles. A total study entitled ?Resource Allocation to Optimize Mining Pollution Abatement Programs?* will consider all of these sources. However, this paper will discuss only one micro-system, the drift (deep) mine type. We will look at a single mine and its watershed. The total research project considers a multiple mining complex in an extensive stream basin.

Iron Mountain Mines, Inc., (IMMI) ore de- posits are located in the southeastern portion of the Klamath Mountains in the West Shasta copper/Zinc Mining District in Shasta County (Figure 1). The original massive sulfide ore deposits totaled 22,895,000 Mt (25 million st). The remaining ore deposits contain 12,875,000 Mt (14,183,000 st) of proven massive sulfides and 2,769,000 Mt (3,050,000 st) of proven gossan deposits. The addition of magnetite deposits and tailings (now marketable) brings the total of proven and probable reserves to 20,433,000 Mt (22,508,000 st). The massive sulfide ore bodies are generating a natural flow of acid mine water which has been slowly leaching minerals out of these deposits. This flow varies in volume, depending on rainfall, and contains variable concentrations of copper, zinc, iron and precious metals. This mine water has been treated for the past 50 years at the mine site to remove copper. The treatment process, utilizing scrap iron precipitation, continues at a production rate of approximately 54,430 Kg (120,000 pounds) of copper precipitate annually.

This is an introductory paper on a new method of prospecting for mineral deposits which has been developed by Scintrex Limited. The method, which we call Luminex, for luminescent mineral exploration, is based on time- resolved mineral luminescence created by an ultraviolet light source. It has the ability to detect and resolve a group of key minerals which are either ore minerals themselves, or more often, are accessory or pathfinder minerals for certain types of economic ore deposits. Fortunately, these minerals are commonly found at the earth's surface, even in areas of considerable weathering. The method extends the range of mineral deposits which are remotely detectable from the air to include those such as tungsten, tin, molybdenum, gold and bedded lead-zinc deposits and, is therefore, a natural supplement to our three classical methods of airborne geophysics.

THERE are about sixty bodies which chemists call elements ; the simplest forms of matter which they have been able to extract from the rocky crust of our earth, its waters, and its atmosphere. These substances are distributed in very unequal quantities, and in very different manners. As regards the frequency of these elements in nature, neglecting for the present those which constitute air and water, and confining ourselves to the solid matters of the earth's crust, there are a few which are exceedingly abundant, making up nine-tenths, if not ninety-five hundredths, of the rocks so far as known to us. The elements of which silica, alumina, lime, magnesia, potash, and soda are oxides, are very common, and occur almost everywhere. There are others which are much rarer, being found in comparatively small quantities. Many of these rarer elements are, however, of great importance in the economy of nature. Such are the common metals and other substances used in the arts, which occur in nature in quantities relatively very minute, but which have been collected by various agencies, and thus made available for the wants of man. It is chiefly of the well-known metals, iron, copper, silver, and gold, that I propose to speak to-night ; but there are two other elements not classed among the metals, which I shall notice for the reason that their history is extremely important, and will, moreover, enable , us to comprehend more clearly some points in that of the metals themselves. While costs of most commodities and services have increased markedly over the past 25 years, the cost of electricity has steadily declined. One of the reasons for this price decline is the improved efficiencies of generating plants which is shown in Fig. 1. 1,2 Another reason for this is the decline in coal production costs. Efficiencies for the best plant increased from about 32 percent in 1540 to about 40 percent in 1962 and then decreased slightly to 38 percent in 1965. The increase in efficiency for all plants (US average) has been even more notable, progressing from less than 15 percent in 1940 to about 32 percent in 1965. The chief reason for the improved efficiency is the change in operating steam temperatures. These increased about 12 F per year until 1200 F was reached in 1962. At this high temperature excessive corrosion of super-heater and reheater tubes was experienced and steam temperatures were dropped back to 1050 F and even 1000 F in some cases. To successfully compete against other energy sources for generating electricity, this corrosion problem must be solved so that operation at higher temperatures and thus, increased efficiencies will be possible.

"One of the main functions of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, as authorized by Congress, is to investigate safety and health conditions, to disseminate information regarding safe and unsafe practices in mining, and to aid in improving safety and health conditions of mining communities and in promoting the welfare of the miner. Among several methods of reaching the miner and interesting him in safety work, perhaps the most effective is through the 11 mine safety stations and 11 railroad cars known as mine rescue, or more correctly, mine safety cars.Frequently, the Bureau of Mines receives requests for information regarding the purpose, equipment, personnel, and construction of its safety cars used in the field service. It is the intention of this circular to present to the mining public in particular, and to the public in general, some definite information regarding these safety cars and their functions.The cars are operated throughout the mining fields of the United States and are headquartered as follows (see fig. 1): Car 1, Reno, Nev.; Car 2, Raton, N. M.; Car 3, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Car 4, Terre Haute, Ind.; Car 5, Pineville, Ky.; Car 6, Pittsburg, Kans.; Car 7, Huntington, W. Va.; Car 8, Duluth, Minn.; Car 9, Butte, Mont.; Car 10, Des Moines, Iowa; Car 11, Anchorage, Alaska.One of the most important purposes of the U. S. Bureau of Mines safety cars is to render service at mine fires and explosions where human life is endangered. State mine inspectors and other interested persons are supplied with itineraries of the car operating in their districts from time to time, so that they may know at all times where the car can be found in case of emergency. When these disasters occur the car may be reached direct or through its field headquarters, and upon receiving word of a mine disaster, or request for assistance, it immediately proceeds to the scene of trouble. Frequently a special locomotive is supplied by the railroads and in many instances the movement of the car is given the right of way over all other railway traffic. Upon reaching the destination, the facilities and personnel of the car are immediately available for rescue and recovery operations.Following most mine disasters a thorough investigation is made by engineers of the Bureau of Mines, and a confidential report is submitted to the operator. The information gained in this manner from a large number of mine fires and explosions, together with the knowledge gained from the experimental work carried on at the Experimental mine of the bureau at Bruceton, Pa., serves as a basis upon which the bureau is able to recommend preventive measures whereby similar occurrences may be averted. The bureau car is often used as headquarters for the investigating engineer when such an examination is being made."

In the early part of 1893, I had occasion to make for the owners a professional examination of the Rich Patch tract; and, with their permission, I present in this paper, omitting the commercial portions of my report, those portions which may be valuable to future students of that region. Location, Topography And Geology. The Rich Patch tract comprises about 9000 acres, located about 3 miles west of Low Moor, on the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, in Alleghany county, Va., and immediately adjoining the Low Moor property. In shape the tract is roughly quadrangular, being about 3 miles broad in a northerly and southerly direction, by about 6 miles long from east to West. Potts creek and Jackson river run along its northern boundary. It is drained by Hayes Gap run, Mill branch and Laurel creek, which flour north into Potts creek, and by Karnes creek, which flows northeasterly through the Low Moor property into Jackson river. The topography of the tract is shown by the accompanying map (Fig. I), and need not be described here. The valleys are cut down from 1000 to 1500 feet below the mountain summits, which generally reach an altitude of about 3000 feet above tide. The geological structure of the district is indicated by the geological cross-sections shown in Figs. 2 and 3. These sections show that the formations underlying the property extend from the Lower Silurian lin~estones up to the Devonian slates, including the numbers of the Paleozoic system of rocks as defined by the geological surveys of Virginia, Pennsylvania and New York, from No. 11. to No. VIII. • No. IX. Layered LiMn0.5Ni0.3Co0.2O2 was prepared from Mn(NO3)2, Ni(NO3)2, Co(NO3)2 and LiOH by co-precipitation and solid state reaction. XRD, C-V and galvanostatic charge-discharge methods were used to examine the structural and electrochemical characteristics. The LiMn0.5Ni0.3Co0.2O2 delivered a high discharge capacity of 167 mAh/g between 2.5 and 4.3 V with excellent cycling stability.

The National Steel Pellet Project and the Butler Taconite Project are operated by The Hanna Mining Company in the vicinity of the towns of Keewatin and Nashwauk, on the western Mesabi Range. Production began in 1967, after seven years of exploratory and development diamond drilling and reconnaissance magnetic surveys, Previously, direct shipping hematitegoethite ores and gravity concentrates had been produced in the area from numerous open pits and several underground mines since the start of the century. Total shipments of these oxidized ores amounted to more than 200 million tons, but at the present time such reserves are nearly exhausted, and there are no mining operations in the Keewatin-Nashwauk area except at the two taconite projects. The locations of all of the present taconite operations on the Mesabi Range are shown in Figure 1, extending for a distance of about seventy miles from the Butler plant to the Dunka River area. The Butler and National plants have a combined rated capacity of 4.4 million tons of pellets. Their reserves cover a combined strike length of about eight miles on the Biwabik iron formation. All of the intervals between present taconite operations on the Mesabi are potential sources of additional magnetic taconite; in particular, exploration and economic studies have been carried out by Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation in the Biwabik area between Aurora and Virginia, and by Pickands Mather and Company in the Hibbing area. However, west of the Henna and Butler holdings, it appears unlikely that magnetic taconite exists in commerical quantities at economic depths due to extensive oxidation of magnetite to hematite.
