The paper has focused on possibilities of interconnecting information sources concerning monitoring & control of mining industry technical processes (TP), and the related safety hazards. The key issue is the comprehensiveness of the information presented to users. Information can be presented by virtual reality means, when the seemingly true presentation of the production process scene along with user friendly presentation of related information is available. The user in its role of a process supervisor is not only a mere scene observer but, thanks to the interactive functions of virtual environment, he participates in the scene of his control. As such his control and management abilities increase because he can absorb, more easily understand and asses the information provided.

O aço em estudo (SAE8620MOD) é um material utilizado na aplicação de estruturas de óleo e gás. Essa liga modificada é utilizada em estruturas off-shore para produção de amarras. Para garantir a qualidade do produto são realizadas uma série de ensaios, dentre eles propriedades mecânicas (RT, LE, Alongamento e redução de área) bem como resultados de dureza e impacto. O ensaio de impacto está relacionado diretamente com a microestrutura obtida durante o processo de solidificação do aço e com o tratamento térmico realizado. Microestruturas com alto grau de bandeamento podem comprometer a variabilidade dos resultados de impacto. A redução ou até mesmo a eliminação do bandeamento é um caso de amplo estudo, principalmente em aços com processo de lingotamento contínuo. Muitas soluções já foram propostas para a redução do bandeamento, o de agitação eletromagnética tem se mostrado bastante efetivo na redução dos níveis de bandeamento e segregação dos produtos lingotados. O ensaio consiste em avaliar a intensidade do campo eletromagnético (FEMS) para o comportamento do nível de bandeamento do material. Foi utilizada uma corrida para teste via lingotamento contínuo, onde a velocidade de lingotamento permaneceu constante e variou-se a corrente dos agitadores em três condições: tarugos com baixa agitação (FEMs com corrente baixa), tarugos com alta agitação (FEMS com corrente alta) e tarugos sem agitação (FEMS desligado). Com baixa agitação no FEMS conseguimos obter um nível de bandeamento menor se comparado com os outros resultados. Como consequência a variação dos valores de impacto apresentaram-se menores que as demais condições, devido a homogeneidade do material. Dessa forma podemos dizer que a redução do nível de bandeamento no material reduziu também a variação dos resultados de impacto, tornando o processo mais estável.

The Jeffrey operation of Canadian Johns -Manville Co. , Ltd., at Asbestos, Quebec, is considered to be the world's largest asbestos mine. It accounts for approximately 37% of Canadian production of chysotile asbestos and about 13% of world production. Rated capacity is over 600,000 stpy (540,000 mtpy) of fiber, of which well over 90% is exported to the United States and seventy other countries. During the early 1970's the company completed a five-year modernization and expansion program which included the installation of a unique 72 in. by 93 in. gyratory crusher to handle the extremely blocky serpentinized peridotite ore. Because of the large diameter of this crusher the top ring of the shell was made in two halves which were bolted together. Hundred-ton trucks dump from two sides of the crusher into the 200 st (180 mt) dump pocket which is equipped with dust collecting ducts in the walls of the other two sides. The installation was designed to accommodate the eventual use of 200 -ton trucks. Crushed ore at a. size of 7 ½ in. (191 mm) falls into a uniquely designed crushed ore pocket equipped with three sloping steel sides and one vertical side, which make it totally live. Infrared heaters installed in back of the hopper sides prevent the ore from sticking to the steel. Another interesting feature is an eccentric removal bridge which is permanently mounted inside the crushed ore pocket. The two halves of the bridge are let down by electric winches to form a platform on which the eccentric cart travels and from where maintenance is done. Level indications in the crushed ore pocket are by radioactive indicators. Under the crushed ore pocket is a 72 in. by 28 ft (1.83 m by 8.5 m) apron feeder which operates at 7. 2 to 50 fpm (2. 3 to 15. 3 mpm). Crushed ore is discharged to a picking belt for tramp removal. A crossbelt magnetic separator is also mounted over this belt. Permanently mounted belt reels are also situated over the picking belt to facilitate the changing of this unit. A 60 in. (1. 52 m) wide takeaway belt then elevates the crushed ore to t.he surface facilities. Instead of discharging to a crushed ore stockpile, the takeaway conveyor delivers the ore to a 300-ton distribution bin. The ore is then screened and secondary crushed; and the plus ¾ in. (19 m) is "stored in a 3,000 ton bin while the minus ¾ in. is dried and then sent to storage. This system of directly screening primary crushed ore is similar to that used at both the Endako molybdenum and Gibraltar copper operations in British Columbia. While it would seem connecting processing equipment directly to a primary crusher would have an adverse effect on the crusher availability, the 94% of scheduled time this crusher

NITROGEN used as an alloying element in steel has received increased attention in recent years. Its merit as an austenite stabilizer and hot strengthener has long been recojinized, particularly by European investigators.' Recent work' indicates that nitrogen contents of 1/2 pet or more allow the addition of several percent of ferrite-forming hot strengtheners, such as molybdenum, without subsequent austenite decomposition at elevated temperatures. The room temperature properties of such alloys are characterized by high yield and tensile strengths with excellent ductility, even after cold working, as shown in Tables I and 11. The 1350°F creep-rupture properties of Cr-Mn-Mo-N steels are comparable to those of commercial alloys such as Timken's 16-25-6, containing 16 pct Cr, 25 pct Ni, and 6 pct Mo, as shown in Table 111. Cr-Mn steel containing 1/2 pet N must be made under pressure if ingot gassing is to be avoided. However, there are difficulties attendant to this practice. Pressure melting restricts the ingot size, and the equipment required is costlier and more complicated than comparable air melting facilities. An effort was made, therefore, to determine more economical methods of adding nitrogen. The pressures generated in centrifugal casting usually range from 5 to 10 atm and are sufficient to prevent the gassing of high nitrogen Cr-Mn steels. A centrifugal casting was made of an alloy containing 16 pct Cr, 18 pct Mn, 2 pct Mo, and 0.73 pct N. A risk, 8 in. diam and 11/2 in. thick, was cast at 1000 rpm. It has been calculated that a pressure of 9 atm was developed at the periphery of the disk at this speed. Metallographic inspection of specimens taken from the disk revealed no gas holes or other defects. The elevated temperature properties of radial and circumferential specimens taken from this casting are given in Table IV. The creep-rupture life of this cast nickel-free austenitic steel was equivalent to that of the wrought Cr-Mn-Mo-N steels. Although centrifugal casting appears to lend itself to the manufacture of high nitrogen austenitic steels, its applicability is limited to relatively small sizes. A process applicable to the production of large ingots of high nitrogen steels is suggested by low carbon rimming steel practice. Gas holes formed during ingot solidification are not detrimental so long as they weld shut during hot rolling. An economic advantage of gassing ingots is the increased ingot-to-slab yield, especially if the ingots are mechanically capped. Also, it is probable that higher nitrogen levels can be achieved with mechanically capped ingots than with hot-topped ingots. A series of gassy heats was made under both atmospheric and higher pressures, as indicated in Table V. Several of the air melted ingots were mechanically capped by chilling the molten ingot tops with a steel plate. The ingots were allowed to freeze in steel molds without hot-tops unless otherwise indicated. A comparison of Table 111 with Table V shows no significant difference in the creep-rupture properties of the gassy and the nongassy ingots after hot work- ing nor between the gassy ingots produced under different conditions. The "conductivity ", Kr, of a spherical void in a linear temperature gradient due to radiation is calculated by integration of the general expression for diffuse radiation between two gray surfaces of arbitrary orientation. The spherical geometry allows an exact evaluation of the phenomenon without resorting to up-proximate expressions for the radiant heat flux. The resulting expression for Kr is three quarters of the approximate value obtained by Loeb. IN the determination of the thermal conductivity of porous materials such as sintered UO2 and ThO2 fuel pellets, the magnitude of the thermal conductivity in the pores due to radiative heat transfer across the pore, Kr, may be important in assessing the total conductivity of the pellets. Loeb' has calculated Kr for various pore geometries by approximating the net flux of heat between two surfaces of temperature difference AT as 4eT~AT and obtained: K,=4yoet3odp [1] where a is the Stefan-Boltzmann constant, E is the emissivity of the radiating surface, To is the average absolute temperature of the region across which radiation occurs, dp is the largest dimension of the gap in the direction of heat flow, and y is a geometric factor. That is: y = 1 for laminar pores and cylindrical pores with axes parallel to the heat flow direction, y = 2/3 for spherical pores, y = /4 for cylindrical pores with axes perpendicular to heat flow direction. It was the purpose of this work to obtain an exact expression for K, in spherical pores by integration of the general expression for the net heat transfer between two incremental areas on the surface of a spherical pore. This procedure yields a value of Kr 3/4 of that obtained by Loeb. I) CALCULATION OF Kr Fig. 1 illustrates the general geometry which defines the problem. The total emissive power for a gray body is given by: E = EoT4 [2] where E is the radiated energy per unit area of the radiation surface per unit time, T is the absolute temperature, o is the Stefan-Boltzmann constant (o = 5.67 X lo- '' watt per sq cm-"K1), and E is the emissivity of the surface. Although Eq. [2] gives the exact expression for the total emissive power of any gray body, all practical problems involve the net exchange of thermal radiation between a body and surrounding bodies. The two major considerations in the solution of such problems are a) shape and relative position of the surfaces and b) the emissivities of the surfaces. In this work it shall be assumed that all incremental areas on a pore have the same emissivity and, further, that little or no reflection occurs (i.e., the radiation hitting a surface is either absorbed or transmitted). Thus, the solution of the stated problem requires only that consideration a be satisfied. Consider two incremental surface areas dA 1 and dA2 of the same material in a general orientation to one another. Let dAl be at temperature TI and dAz be at T2. Fig. 2 illustrates the geometrical parameters involved. Due to always getting stricter environmental legislations as well as increasing land filling fees the efforts for treating residues from metallurgy are continuously increasing. In case of filter dusts from metallurgical industry, the high zinc bearing electric arc furnace (EAF) dusts or also dusts from secondary copper industry are important sources for the recovery of secondary zinc oxide. Because of low capacities for secondary zinc concentrates (like Waelz oxide) in primary zinc metallurgy, the upgrade of such concentrates to a quality that meets the requirements of high quality (technical) zinc oxide becomes more and more important. This would open the opportunity to break into new markets and use it for example directly in electrolytic galvanizing. Therefore this paper will summarize possibilities for an elimination of halogens from secondary zinc oxides. Furthermore selective volatilization trials, with a synthetic mixture according to the analysis of Waelz oxide, were carried out to remove impurities to achieve an upgraded product quality.

"This paper, an overview of our recent findings on mechanical activation (MA) of minerals/materials, emphasizes the importance of sample genesis, mechanically induced/altered porosity and surface area, mineral interactions, glassy inorganic materials, surface alteration and zeta potential changes and, mechanically induced reactivity of solids. Materials investigated include Al-oxyhydroxides (gibbsite and boehmite), fly ash and granulated blast furnace slag. Planetary, attrition, vibratory and conventional ball mills are used for MA. Genesis of boehmite has been found to have a bearing on its behavior during MA. For example, BET specific surface area (SSA) of boehmite prepared by thermal dehydroxylation of gibbsite has decreased from 265 to 65 m2/g during 240 min of MA; in contrast, the SSA of hydrothermal boehmite has increased from ~2 to 36 m2/g. Mechanisms of surface area changes in the two boehmite samples differing in their genesis is explored. MA of gibbsite and its mixture with hematite/quartz using attrition milling has indicated that the presence of the second phase promotes amorphisation. Amorphous materials show signs of change in nature of bonding during milling as illustrated by MA of fly ash. Physicochemical changes during MA are not restricted to the bulk phase. The genesis of zeta potential changes in MA solids can be many; for example texture induced zeta potential changes as observed for gibbsite, while zeta potential changes during the milling of granulated blast furnace slag occur due to enhanced (possibly non-congruent) dissolution. Interesting manifestations of mechanically induced reactivity and its correlation with physicochemical changes are illustrated in terms of alkali leaching of boehmite and, hydration of MA slag. New findings reported here are associated with several open questions and are highlighted in the paper."

"It has been a major challenge to reduce the intermixed grade formation during ladle change-over operation in continuous casting process of tundish steelmaking. The F-curve generated by step input of the tracer (new grade steel) tells about the intermixed grade amount for different grade specifications. Use of flow modifiers is beneficial in reducing the intermixed grade because of the change in slope (in different time zones) and position of the F-curve due to their placement at tundish bottom. Present study aims at investigating the role of dam placed before the outlet in a multi-strand tundish with reference to the slope behavior of F-curve in different time zones during the teeming operation plays an important role in determining the intermixed amount.Introduction In Continuous casting process, the old grade steel remaining in the tundish (reservoir between ladle and mould) from the old ladle gets mixed with new grade steel from new ladle and leads to intermixed grade which is considered to be of inferior quality. Although formation of intermixed grade is inevitable with the sequential method of casting, its amount can be controlled by changing the flow behavior of steel inside the steel. Intermixing in a slab caster tundish was simulated using 3-D numerical model based on k-å turbulence equation and compared their result with that of water model experiment Yeh and Hwang [1]. Huang and Thomas [2] reported that quantity of residual fluid in tundish affects the composition distribution in the transitional slab and thus the intermixed length. Huang and Thomas [3] developed three sub models to predict mixing in tundish, liquid core of strand and solidification. Thomas [4] developed a one dimensional model to simulate the final composition distributions in slab caster of continuous casting and investigated the effect of process variables on the intermixing. Alizadeh mehdi et al., [5] simulated of the intermixing phenomenon for slab casting for three different sub models. Goldschmidt et al. [6] developed a numerical model that predicted the location of the intermixed steel in a four line round caster. Lan and Khodadadi [7] studied for the transient fluid flow of liquid steel, heat transfer and solidification during the flying tundish change process. Cho and Kim [8] developed a mixing model to predict the outlet concentration of the tundish during grade transition. Most of the work reported in the literature has dealt with intermixing in slab caster tundish. Billet caster units are more often being used by steel industries due to growing demand of billets. The multiple outlets lead to varying degree of intermixing with time owing to their different distance (location) from the inlet. Use of flow modifier to minimize the intermixed amount, however has also not been discussed in detail so far. Further no work has been reported regarding effect of slope of F-curves obtained through different outlets on intermixing. Hence keeping these objectives in mind attempt has been made by authors to analyze the slope of Fcurves after dividing them into three different time zones and the effect of these time zones on intermixing."

Phelps Dodge Mining Company (Phelps Dodge) is operating a pressure leach vessel (PLV) for copper concentrates at the Bagdad Mine facility in Arizona. This single PLV unit was engineered and constructed based on continuous laboratory testing, reaction chemistry and kinetics, and available pressure vessel technology. The challenge of designing for optimum process retention time, agitation, oxygen mass transfer, temperature and pressure will be reviewed in this paper. The PLV interior lining, agitation equipment and compartment configuration chosen for the PLV will also be reviewed.

Many ore reserves are harvested by a combination of open pit and underground mining methods. In these cases, there is often material that could be mined by either method, and a choice has to be made. The area containing this material is referred to as the transition zone. Deciding where to finish the open pit and start the underground mine is referred to as the transition problem and it has received some attention in the literature since the 1980s.In this paper, we provide a review of existing approaches to the transition problem encompassing: graph theory-based optimisation employing an opportunity cost approach, heuristics and integer programming.
