Since Honda and Murakamil in 1918 proposed their constitutional diagram of the carbon-free iron-tungsten system, considerable effort has been expended by several investigators in attempts to define more positively the structural features of the alloys. The existence of an intermediate phase corresponding to the formula Fe3W2 (68.7 per cent W) was proposed from evidence of a purely metallographic nature by one of the present authors2 in 1926. Since that time the identity of this phase has been confirmed by Arnfelt3 and by Takeda,4 both of whom employed X-ray methods as well as the microscope and the chemical analysis of isolated microconstituents. According to Arnfelt, Fe3W2, as crystallized from the iron-rich melts at a temperature above 1450° C., contains by analysis 68.7 per cent W. The lattice of this phase is characterized by trigonal symmetry. Arnfelt, moreover, proposed a second intermediate phase formed at some temperature between 1450" and 1000" C. by a peritectoid reaction involving Fe3W2 and the iron-rich solid solution. A melt containing 25 per cent W was cooled to 1000" C. and heated for 100 hr. The precipitated tungsten-rich constituent was separated and found by analysis to contain 62.6 per cent W. This composition agrees closely with that represented by the formula Fe2W (62.2 per cent W). Diffraction patterns from the concentrated precipitate showed a hexagonal unit cell. Takeda confirmed the data of Arnfelt regarding Fe3W2 but was unable to detect Arnfelt's second intermediate phase. While Takeda failed to describe in detail the treatments employed, he stated that in alloys containing 40 per cent W which were quenched after heating at various temperatures between 1200" and 1450" C. no evidence of the second phase (Fe2W) was observed 'either in the microstructure or in the diffraction patterns of isolated residues. He therefore considered the existence of this low-temperature hexagonal compound as disproved.

Petroleum Division, holds a commission as Lieutenant-Commander in the Naval Reserve and is attached to the office of Inspector of Naval Petroleum Reserves in California. During World War I he left his studies at Stanford University to join the Army and was granted a commission as Second Lieutenant of Infantry. He remained in the Army Reserve until 1938 when he resigned to accept a commission as a member of the Naval Petroleum Reserves Advisory Board. Born in San Francisco Jan. 29,1899, where his father had lived since 1880, he was in that city during the turbulent year of 1906 where the city was ravaged by fire and earthquake.

The yttrium-manganese system has been investigated by thermal, metallographic, and X-ray diffraction methods. There are three intermetallic compounds present: YMn2 which melts congruently, YMn4, which undergoes syntectic decomposition, and YMn,, which undergoes peritectic decomposition. The compound YMn4 is ferromagnetic at room temperature with a Curie temperature of 214°C. There are eutectics at 25.2, 60.9, and 82.0 wt pct Mn which melt at 878°, 1100°, and 1075°C, respectively. Crys-tallographic data are given for YMn4, and YMn12 . The terminal solid solubilities are low. In a general program of study of yttrium metal in this laboratory some alloy systems of this metal with elements of the first transition period have been examined. This work was originally instigated by experiences in cladding yttrium with jackets of some protective metals such as Inconel for high-temperature service in air.' In some cases a low-melting phase was observed to form between the Inconel and the yttrium resulting in failure of the samples. In characterizing this reaction, a survey was made of the systems of yttrium with chromium, manganese, iron and nickel,, and it was found that a eutectic was formed between these metals and yttrium on the yttrium-rich side of the system. This present study of the Y-Mn system was carried out to examine in more detail the alloying nature of yttrium, and to correlate trends that have been observed in previous related studies. It was observed by Voge13 that in the systems of lanthanum, cerium, and praseodymium with each of the metals in the first transition series, the tendency to form compounds diminished in the order nickel, cobalt, and iron while no compounds were formed with manganese, chromium, or titanium. Beaudry and Daane4 observed a similar behavior in the systems of yttrium with some members of the first transition series except that the tendency for compound formation was greater. Both the Y-Ti5 and Y-Cra systems consist of simple eutectics, while in the Y-Fe,7 Y-CO, and Y-Ni4 systems, there are four, eight, and nine compounds, respectively. In addition to the above trends, the similar atomic radii and electronegativities of yttrium and thorium invite a comparison between their alloying behaviors with a common element such as manganese. In crys- tallographic studies, Florio et al.' have identified three intermediate phases in this system which are ThMn2, Th6Mn23, and ThMn,,. Gschneidner and Waber10 have examined published information on alloy systems of the rare-earth metals and have correlated this information with current alloying theory. From their study, they predicted that the Y-Mn system would contain one intermetallic compound. On the basis of this prediction, the trend in the alloying behavior of yttrium with the elements of the first transition series and the alloying behavior of thorium with manganese, one might expect from one to three intermetallic compounds to form in the Y-Mn system. A consideration of Hume-Rothery's rules of alloying based on size-factor, electronegativity, and valency suggested a small terminal solubility and possible compound formation. The present study was undertaken to confirm these predictions of low terminal solid solubility and compound formation and to establish the general alloying behavior of yttrium with manganese. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The manganese used in this investigation was obtained from the Foote Mineral Co. as electrolytic plates of 99.9 pct stated purity; the yttrium metal was prepared in this laboratory. Table I gives the analyses of these materials. For the solubility studies at the yttrium-rich end of the alloy system, distilled yttrium, whose major impurity was 200 ppm Ti, was used. Preparation of Alloys. The alloys were formed by comelting the two metals in an are-melting furnace under an atmosphere of argon. The buttons thus formed were inverted and remelted three to five times to promote homogeneity. Due to the high vapor pressure of manganese, it was assumed that the weight lost during are-melting was all manganese. High temperature pressure oxidation (>190°C) is a wellrecognized and versatile metallurgical oxidative pre-treatment process commonly used to liberate gold from refractory sulfide ores and concentrates. The pressure oxidation of refractory gold ores was first commercially applied in 1985, at Homestake Mining Company’s McLaughlin mine in the United States. Since that time numerous refractory gold and other high temperature pressure oxidation facilities have been built throughout the world. The design of each facility was met with unique challenges and opportunities which have led to an array of plant configurations, pressure oxidation autoclave sizes, and sulfide oxidation capacities. This paper presents a historical review of high temperature pressure oxidation operations and current projects in execution with a focus on the autoclave vessel design, circuit configuration, and unit sulfide oxidation capacity as a basis for characterization and comparison.

A financial-economic model incorporating physical, market, and policy variables is developed for mining investment in Bolivia. Additional risk criteria emanating from political instability. new mining legislation, recent environmental regulations, and a new minerals taxation system are accounted for and are integrated into the investment decision model. Results of the model indicate that geologic and market variables have the dominant effect on the investment-worth function. Among policy variables, exchange rate and taxation policies have the most significant influence. Depreciation allowance for infrastructure development has negligible weight in the investment-worth function. The business structure of the firm considering investing in the Bolivian Polymetallic Project is found to be an instrumental factor in the investment-worth outcome. Specifically, undiversified mining companies whose operations exclude zinc production as the primary source of revenue would benefit most from adoption of this project.

Negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistors are required to have good electrical stability for many domestic and industrial applications. The aging phenomenon of NTC thermistors can be described as the change in electrical resistance due to thermal stress with time. In this study, Ni0.5CoxMn2.5−xO4 (x = 0.5, 0.8 and 1.1) ceramics were fabricated by the conventional solid-state reaction method. The powder mixtures of manganese, cobalt and nickel oxides were ball-milled for 5 h. The powders were calcinated at 900 °C for 2 h. The samples were sintered at 1100 °C for 5 h. To investigate the aging behaviour, the samples were held at 150 °C for 400 h. Aging in the samples were calculated by the following equation; ΔR/R0 = (R − R0)/R0 in which R0 is the resistance at 25 °C before the aging test, and R is the resistance at 25 °C after the aging test.

The treatment of gold-plant tailings with ferrous sulphate to remove the cyanide is currently in use, on several gold plants. In some cases there is scope for optimization the process. The present work provides a detailed study of the reaction between cyanide and ferrous sulphate. Optimal conditions for the removal of total cyande required a ph of 5,.5 to 6,5 and an Fe:CN molar ratio of 0,5. Ferrocyanide ion is shown to be unstable In aqueous acidic solution, with rapid oxidation to ferricyanide, (Fe(CN) 6 ), and formation .of Fe(CN)5H2O3- at pH values below 4, The precipitate from the reaction between cyanide and ferrous sulphate consists mainly 01 Insoluble Prussian blue, Fe4[Fe(CNI&!.3,and IS shown to be unstable in the presence of alkaline solution, since it decomposes rapidly at pH values above 7 to form ferrocyanide, (Fe(CN)6 ), in solution and various insoluble iron oxides,

"Zinc is the fourth most widely used metal in the world after iron, aluminum and copper. The primary zinc production is through flotation of zinc concentrate, roasting, leaching and electrowinning. Close to 60% of the metal produced is consumed in galvanizing the steel by making a thin layer of zinc coating on the steel surface by hot dip galvanizing. Process Research ORTECH Inc. has developed an efficient energy-saving sustainable technology for the recovery of zinc from secondary sources such as galvanized steel scrap, dross, dusts etc. The process consists of treating the zinc containing scrap in an alkaline solution to remove the zinc and thereby producing a zinc free steel scrap for recycle. The zinc containing leach liquor is subjected to a solvent extraction process to recover value added zinc oxide as the final product. In this paper, important industrial processes for the recycling of zinc including the PRO process will be discussed. Global refined zinc output increased by 2.7 per cent to 13.16 million tonnes in 2011 and is expected to increase by an additional 2.4 per cent to 13.48 million tonnes in 2012 [1]. The primary zinc production is through flotation of zinc concentrate, roasting, leaching and electrowinning. Close to 60% of the metal produced is consumed in galvanizing steel by making a thin layer of zinc coating on the steel surface by hot dip galvanizing. Other major usages of zinc are in the production of brass and bronze, die casting and zinc-air batteries. The additional demand for zinc could come from its addition to fertilizers to increase crop yield.While the demand for zinc is increasing, many mines are scheduled to close in near future after being depleted of ore. The mines set to close between now and 2015 are Teck Resources’ Red Dog Mine in Alaska, Minmetals’ Century Mine in Australia and Vedanta Resource’s Skorpion Mine in Namibia [1]. The depletion of resources due to continued use and exploitation is becoming a great concern for the zinc industry. As a result, the sustainability of natural resources for continued societal care has become extremely important. Resource conservation and recovery by recycling with minimal environmental impact is a key element for sustainable development. In this paper, important industrial processes for the recycling of zinc including the PRO process are presented."

WORK described herein was undertaken with the aim of determining some of the physical-chemical properties of electrolytes suitable for the electrodeposition of pure zirconium metal. In this paper the phase diagram, vapor pressure, and activities in the melt are considered. In a companion paper,' the electrolytic conductivity of some of these melts is reported. The melts studied were mixtures of NaCl and/or KC1 with ZrC1,. Chloride melts were chosen for study because 1) if the electrolyte is to be useful for industrial electrodeposition of zirconium, the chlorides will be preferred to the relatively costly bromides and iodides; 2) fluoride melts were being studied in another laboratory (Horizons Inc., Cleveland); and 3) melts containing oxygen, in any form, are unsuitable for preparation of pure zirconium, because of the great affinity of this metal for oxygen. Unlike electrodeposition from aqueous solution, the fundamental behavior of fused-salt electrolysis is poorly understood. In most cases, such basic electrochemical information as the phase diagram of the melt system, activities in the melt, conductivity, the nature of the current-carrying ions, the equilibrium electrode potentials, and the overvoltage behavior of the electrodes is unknown to the researcher who would develop a new electrodeposition process employing a fused salt. This research project was designed to supply information about some of these basic physical-chemical properties so that an intelligent choice of electrolyte for electrodeposition studies could be made. Experimental The experimental difficulties-encountered in this work result from the properties of zirconium metal and ZrC1,. ZrC1, is a solid which sublimes at 334°C. It is rapidly hydrolyzed by moist air to HC1, ZrOCl,, and ZrO,. Unusual precautions were exercised in this work to prevent hydrolysis of ZrC1, and rigidly to exclude oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, and carbon from the melts under study. These elements are known to react with and contaminate zirconium metal. All melts were studied in vacuum systems, i.e., in the presence of ZrC1, vapor only. Between 1993 and 2003, a series of AG and SAG mill pilot plant trials were conducted using Hardinge Ical pilot plant scale SAG mills on numerous ore samples and ranging across a wide variety of operating conditions. The data from these tests were used to evaluate the design of SAG and AG mill circuits for over a dozen projects, of which about half were eventually constructed and commissioned. The data were also used in the development of SAG mill modelling, scale-up and simulation procedures by several consultants who had access to part of the data set. Recently, we have had the opportunity to bring this data together and further analyse the consolidated dataset. This paper reports on the outcomes of this analysis that has identified the impacts of different AG/SAG circuit flowsheets and operating conditions on energy efficiency and operating cost.

A technique is described for the solvent extraction of zirconium. In this method, zirconium has been extracted quantitatively from 0.005 M sodium salicylate solution at pH 2.5 - 3 using 0.01 M triphenylphosphine oxide dissolved in toluene as an extractant. Zirconium has also been recovered quantitatively from 0.2 M potassium thiocyanate solution, but extractions in nitric and hydrochloric acids (as media) were negligible. The resulting extracted metal ion has been stripped with sulfuric acid (0.5 M) and determined with inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. This method has been applied successfully to achieve 95% recovery of zirconium from zircon concentrate.

Research and development are ongoing in TBM guidance; prediction of TBM cutter wear and tunneling induced ground deformations; and robotic arms for segment installation, inspection, cleaning, and maintenance of TBM cutting tools. This paper presents a case study of geological profile reconstruction using multimodal machine learning. The results from this study can aid the development and application of multimodal AI technologies to generate data reports and geological profiles in real time, taking voice recordings, photos, or videos obtained directly from the field as inputs.

"The process described has been developed to utilize low-grade scrap -turnings, borings, tin cans and other types of ferrons scrap which currently has been of limited or no use in conventional steelmaking processes. If scrap of this type can be converted into high-purity iron by chemical means then there is a potential saving of several million tons of metal annually in North America.The process is chemically quite simple and consists of dissolving ferrons scrap in hydrochloric acid, followed by evaporation and crystallization of the resultant solution to yield ferrons chloride crystal.s. These crystals are dries, briquetted and converted to non sponge by reduction in hot hydrogen. The HCl produced from the reduction step. is absorbed in water and the hydrochloric acid so produced is returned to the dissolver circuit. The hydrogen produced from the initial dissolution of the scrap is used to reduce the ferrons chloride. Purity is maintained by bleeding off impure chloride solutions from the evaporator-crystallizer circuit, and converting these chlorides to oxides and HCI in a high-temperature spray roaster. The HCl produced in the roaster is absorbed in water and the hydrochloric acid returned to the dissolver."

One of the main factors that reduce strip cleanliness are iron fines, which are formed due to the abrasive interactions of the roll surface and the strip in the roll bite during cold rolling. They can cause a problem in fouling of the cold rolling mill as well as downstream processes. It has been repeatedly observed that chrome plating the work roll improves strip cleanliness. In the present work, scratch tests and reciprocating sliding tests were carried out under lubricated conditions to explore the influence of chrome plating on iron fines formation. Scratch tests were conducted to study the influence of chrome plating on iron fines formation at single asperity scale due to its intrinsic property. Reciprocating sliding tests were performed to study the influence of chrome plating a rough surface on iron fines formation, taking into account the initial roughness. The scratches made using chrome plated pins showed lower friction, generated less iron fines and exhibited lower material transfer. Reciprocating sliding tests done using the uncoated pins showed galling at different sliding distances depending on the roughness of the pin. On the contrary, reciprocating sliding tests with the chrome plated pins exhibited no galling irrespective of the roughness.

The temperature and pressure dependence of the reaction of tantalum in oxygen were investigated from 500° to 1000°C at pressures from 10 mm Hg to 600 psi total oxygen pressure. Tantalum was found to oxidize linearly under the above conditions. Three distinct regions of temperature dependence were found with different energies of activation. From 500° to 600°C the rate of oxidation of tantalum was found to be essentially independent of the oxygen pressure at the pressure investigated. The oxidation rate increases rapidly with an increase in pressure from 600' to 800°C. The dependence of the oxidation rate on the bulk concentration may be expressed by V = k'?, where k' is the specific rate constant and ?=k1Co2/(l + K1Co2), where k, is the equilibrium constant for the adsorption of oxygen on tantalum. ONLY a limited amount of data has been presented in the literature on the oxidation behavior of tantalum metal. Some values of its oxidation rate were reported in the Corroston Handbook' and by McAdams and Geil.' The first extensive investigation of tantalum was the work of Gulbransen and Andrews." They determined the reaction rates of tantalum in O2 and N2. Their results indicate that this metal follows the parabolic law in the temperature range of 250" to 450°C in O2 at pressures of 7.6 cm Hg with an activation energy of 27,400 cal per mol. In nitrogen, the metal follows the parabolic law from 500" to 800°C at 7.6 cm pressure. All experimental determinations were of 2 hr or less duration and deviations from the parabolic rate conceivably could occur at longer times. A spectrophotometric study of the oxidation of tantalum by Waber, Sturdy, Wise, and Tipton' indicated good agreement between this method and the microbalance technique. The experiments were conducted in air from 220" to 350°C. The metal was found to follow the logarithmic law up to 320°C and the parabolic law at higher temperatures. The activation energies in the logarithmic region were reported as 12.57 kcal per mol and 12.0 kcal per mol, respectively, for the microgravimetric and spectrophotometric methods. In the parabolic region the activation energy was found to be 27.2 kcal per mol, in good agreement with the value of Gulbransen and Andrews." The present paper is concerned with the behavior of tantalum from 500" to 1000°C in oxygen at pressures ranging from 1/2 to 40.8 atm pressure. Earlier preliminary data by McKewan5,6 indicated the following facts concerning the behavior of tantalum: 1—At temperatures from 500" to 600°C, the metal followed the linear law. 2—At 575°C the rate of oxidation was found to increase with O2 pressure. 3—The Arrhenius plot in this temperature region was nonlinear. The nonlinearity of the Arrhenius plot was indicative of a more complex behavior than originally suspected for this metal.

High-purity aluminum and an Al-10 pet Zn alloy zvere tested in axial fatigue from 80" to 900oF, at struzn vales of 5 and 150 pct per min, at a strain amplitude of 1 pcl. Cycles to failure were recorded as well as the load per cycle during the entive test. Several grain sizes were examined in each material. Examination was made of modes of deformation, initiation and growlh of' cracks, and vecovery mechanisms such as srbgrain formation and boundary migration. Strain rate effects on cycles to failure are first observed ahoi'e 50O0F, the highev vate vesulting in longer lije. Crack initiclion at room temperature may be truns-or iutercrystalline but fructures are transcrystalline. Abore 600'F, crack iniliation and growth ave largely inlercvystalline. Boundary wzigratiotz to 45-deg positions is observed above 70Oo F, and fractrrves are a combination of grain bol~ndary voids and cvacks. It is only in recent years that studies of deformation and fracture which prevail in fatigue at elevated temperatures have attracted significant attention.' Of such studies considerably less attention was given to high strain-low strain rate fatigue. Moreover, the majority of high-temperature fatigue studies were performed at conventional machine speeds (1000 to 10,000 cpm). As it is well-demonstrated in uniaxial creep-rupture series, at high strain rates, even at high temperatures, metals undergo work hardening with little or no attendant recovery or recrystallization thus the nature of deformation and fracture which is observed is similar to that encountered at lower temperatures.'-" Thus, for example, fatigue testing of a stainless steel at 750°F does not involve high-temperature deformation processes,2 and might more correctly be termed "fatigue testing at an elevated temperature". It was the purpose of this work to study deformation and fracture in fatigue as a function of low strain rates and temperature, selecting conditions which would result in grain boundary sliding, migration, fold and subgrain formation, and intercrystalline cracking in high-purity aluminum and a high-purity A1- 10 pct Zn alloy. Grain size was an additional variable. Extensive studies of the deformation and fracture behavior of these aluminum materials in simple creep had been done in the authors' laboratory, and were to serve as a basis of comparison for the observed effects in fatigue:'-'' the range of the creep test temperatures was 80° to 1150oF. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The compositions of the 99.99 pct pure A1 and the A1-10 pct Zn alloy are shown in Table I. Button-head specimens, with a liberal fillet, of 0.20 in. diam and of gage length 0.40 in. were machined from wrought bar stock. The ratio of 2:l gage length to diameter was selected after preliminary tests showed that a shorter length gave a shorter life, probably due to end effects, and after evidence of buckling in longer gage length specimens. After machining, the specimens were chemically polished to remove the worked outer layer, and were subsequently heat-treated to stabilize the selected grain sizes. Both the high-purity aluminum and the A1-10 pct Zn alloy were heat-treated to produce grain diameters of approximately 0.5 and 2 mm in each case. These grain sizes are referred to in the text as fine and coarse grain, respectively. One lot of the high-purity aluminum was heat-treated to produce a still coarser grain size in which the cross section was occupied by 2 to 3 grains. This structure is referred to as very coarsegrained. After heat treatment, the specimens were again electropolished. To avoid complications of both stress and strain gradients in the cross section of the specimen, a hydraulic, axial fatigue machine was designed and built. A button-head specimen, 1/2 in. diam at the head, was firmly gripped in a split-type holder free of any play in the grips. The test temperatures varied from 80" to 900°F. The strain amplitude in all of the reported tests was 1 pct for a total strain amplitude of 2 pct. The strain range was set by precision micrometers and measured by a precision dial gage. Constant strain rates of 5 and 150 pct per min were selected so that high-temperature type deformation and fracture would occur in the higher-temperature tests5,6 The strains and strain rates must be regarded as nominal values because they are based on the original specimen dimensions, which changed significantly as a result of necking and crack propagation, as can be observed from Fig. 8. For the elevated-temperature tests, a thermocouple was inserted into a well in the head of the specimen; the selected temperatures could be maintained with less than ± 5oF fluctuation during the entire test. To avoid changes in grain size before the test, specimens were heated to the test temperature in less than 15 min; similarly, they were cooled to room temperature after fracture with an air blast to avoid or minimize recovery or recrystallization. During the fatigue tests, load vs strain curves were recorded by a strain gage load cell for each fatigue cycle. In addition, the maximum values of load amplitude were recorded for the entire test.

Working with junior mining companies as a valuer, my experience with regulators is that simplicity works and the sales comparison method is the way to go. What I like about Mr. Ellis?s approach (as in his Table 7) is the integration of commodity prices with the timing of acquisitions and the implication of price changes in gold on the adjustment of individual project valuations. However, the sample gold-related appraisals in Ellis?s paper are pre-2008 transactions and readers should be made aware of the current market for such projects. Before moving on, to be noted is that the effective date of the Las Brisas appraisal (Ellis?s sample Appraisal 3) is Feb. 10, 2006; given that the subject value of Transaction 9, Choco 10 in Ellis?s Table 6 was listed as $353 million for a 95% interest in the con-cession, I am uncomfortable accepting that the acquisition was suddenly worth the adjusted value of $1,205 million (as given in Ellis?s Table 7). In some cases, illiquidity discounts can apply, and commodity-wise, in the one-month period between the acquisition in January 2006 and the adjustment to the Las Brisas conditions as of February 10, 2006, the indicated gold price change was only 41 cents/g ($12.60/oz); i.e., from $17.50/g to $17.91/g ($544.40/oz to $557/oz).

"Recent concerns over the availability of many mineral raw materials, and newly available technological developments, produced renewed interest in deep-sea mining. However, environmental concerns, with variable degrees of justification, are raising opposition to the concept. The forecast for the behavior of consumption versus availability of many raw materials, nearly all critical metals, arguably show that consumption will grow much faster than resource discovery onshore. Finding new sources of raw materials seems inescapable. The deep seafloor stands out as the only likely candidate.Sea Floor Mining and the EcosystemMarine mining has already started, decades ago, for diamonds, currently up to depths near 400m. Although the industry recognizes there is a footprint, it considers the footprint quite minor, because the area mined is small: in Namibia, where offshore diamond mining is now 70% of the country’s total, only 3% of the concession of 3,700 sq miles (9600km2) have been mined. As plans to mine deep-sea massive sulphide deposits and polymetallic nodules progress, the environmental concerns grow. Dimension stone includes a wide variety of natural materials that are put to an equally wide variety of uses. It is possible to classify dimension stone according to the end use to which the stone is put or according to the lithology of the stone. Both schemes are used by the United States Bureau of Mines in the annual Minerals Yearbook. The 1969 Yearbook lists 15 specific uses and has additional miscellaneous catagories. The same Yearbook lists five specific rock types or lithologies, and also includes a miscellaneous category. In a short presentation it would hardly be possible to list and define all these categories, much less discuss the evaluation of deposits with regard to all possible combinations. Besides, I am only slightly familiar with some of the uses and their requirements. I have therefore chosen to limit my remarks to some special problems in evaluating dimension stone that is to be cut and finished to specific sizes, tolerances, and finishes for use in buildings and some monuments. This use class is called cut stone in the Minerals Yearbook. In terms of dollar value it is the largest single use category. In 1969 the dollar value of cut stone was $29,122,000 which is more than twice the value of the next largest category. For those of you who are interested in other use applications of dimension stone I suggest that you start with recent articles by Bowles (1960), Currier (1960), and Barton (1968).
