Flocculation of fine coal is usually accomplished with the addition of commercially available organic flocculants. Recently it has been shown that biopolymers derived from microorganisms can be used to flocculate coal. The biopolymers flocculate coal efficiently and render the coal surface hydrophobic. The increase in hydrophobicity can be utilized either to separate the coal flocs from mineral matter. It can also be used for reducing the moisture content of fine coal. In this regard, flocculation and settling tests of fine coal with biopolymers and synthetic flocculants was undertaken and the results are discussed here. Also, a transport model was developed for the time-dependent settling tests for fine coal.

Primarily, 1961 was a year for widespread application of tools and techniques which have become operational in the past several years • • • Raising --Raise climbers and climber raising techniques have been improved; narrow veins as low as 55° dip are now being mined from climber raises. Climber modifications include: larger motors, tighter radius curves negotiated, improved lubrication and new methods of stowing the climber during a blast. Climber raises are now ventilated in several ways: a 12-in. diam flexible vent tube behind the climber rail; a 6-in. diam pipe behind the climber rail (with fan); or a 6 to 8-in. diam drill hole along the axis of the raise. In hot raises, these ventilating techniques have resulted in more rounds per shift. When driving raises from crosscut and lateral development, mucking machine loading of raise rock is preferred over slusher ramp loading for the following reasons: a) faster set-up and teardown of climber facilities; b) easier access for climber maintenance, repair and loading of raising supplies; c) area at the bottom of the raise can be kept cleaner. Both wide and narrow veins are mined from 7 x 7-ft climber raises at Butte and at Republic, Wash. At Republic, climber rollers have been modified to support increased weight when driving 55°dip raises • Drilling-The new largebore, short-stroke push feed drills are much faster drilling than previous models and are most satisfactory in hard ground. Although reports on maintenance studies of the new drills are not yet available, increased steel and bit wear and breakage, and increased drill maintenance are seen as potential problems. Mines in Montana and Idaho continue to test rubber-collared drill steel. The fabricating methods used are successful but advantages in increased steel life have yet to be proved. Underground applications of down-the-hole drills continue. Drilling speed and accuracy are reported as the outstanding advantages. Manufacturers are now hopeful of making drills which will operate in any direction. Present applications are for ventilation holes (to 8 in. diam) for climber raises, holes for hydraulic fill distribution, drain holes and "predrilled" raises. Good drilling accuracy has been reported to a depth of 200 ft. Cutting holes in drifting is seen as a future application

"Verifying the quality of cast-in-place foundation applications, particularly those cast under slurry, is of course important, due to its great dependency on the methodology employed and on the practices of the site personnel. Due to the techniques used to install these elements, it is usually not possible to inspect the hole prior to grout or concrete placement, but there are several Non Destructive Test (NDT) methods available to assess the integrity of the completed foundation elements. This paper will compare several NDT methods with the Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP) method for verifying the integrity in Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) piles and Bored Piles. The Thermal Integrity Profiling method will be described and some examples will be presented where TIP testing was used to confirm the structural integrity of CFA piles and Bored Piles.IntroductionThere are several Non Destructive Test (NDT) methods available for integrity testing of foundation elements. Each of those methods has advantages and disadvantages (White et al, 2008). Some methods test the integrity based on the reflections of a stress-wave generated by low or high-strain impact, while others require tubes to be installed prior to concrete pouring, and test the integrity between those tubes, or within a small proximity of them. The former methods (especially the low-strain) are faster and more cost-effective, but are not able to detect the quadrant where the damage is located. The latter methods are able to determine the quadrant, but do not test the region outside of the reinforcing cage, that is, they are not able to determine the concrete cover. The Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP) NDT method overcomes the limitations of these other NDT methods.Overview of Shaft Integrity MethodsUntil now, the most widely used methods to test the integrity of Bored and CFA piles were the low-strain pile integrity testing and the cross-hole ultra-sonic testing. The low-strain method for integrity testing (PIT) involves attaching an accelerometer usually to the pile top (using a putty or wax) and striking the pile surface with a handheld hammer, which causes a compressive wave to enter the pile. This wave is totally reflected when it reaches the end of the pile or a major defect, and is partially reflected when it encounters any change in crosssection, or a change in the resistance or density of the pile material. These reflections arrive at the top at a time determined by the distance and wave speed, and causes a noticeable change in the signal detected by the accelerometer. The acceleration signal is normally converted to velocity by simple integration, and sometimes the force applied by the hammer is also measured. The velocity (and force) signals can be processed by the pulse-echo method (in the time domain) or by the transient response method (in the frequency domain)."

Real time analysis of ore quality between the mine and mill provides major benefits to copper mining and processing operations. Prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) is a proven technique that has been successfully applied for real time conveyed flow multi-elemental measurement. The advantage of PGNAA is that it measures through the full conveyed cross section continuously and provides representative element measurement without the need to constantly sample coarse (primary crushed) conveyed flows. High specification PGNAA analyzers enable accurate measurement over time increments as short as thirty seconds. Elements such as copper can be measured to a precision of 0.02% copper which is sufficient for high confidence in decisions for bulk flow diversion. Increments of eight tonnes are being diverted through a bulk ore sorting application to remove batches of waste from mill feed as well as divert material to different stockpiles based on ore quality. Longer measurement increments of two to five minutes are suitable for blending control of ores to reduce feed quality variability and to control average ore quality within a target range. Feed blends can be adjusted as frequently as required but typically multiple measurement increments are composited to produce a rolling average ore quality. The paper details two case studies where analyzers have been successfully used to measure conveyed flows for blending and bulk diversion applications. The real time measurements of ore composition are also used for ore reconciliation, in metal accounting and providing process operators with advance warning of ore quality changes that may affect grinding performance and cause process upsets. Real time ore quality measurement has proven beneficial in improving copper processing performance through better utilising plant capacity in a leaching operation, optimising ore feed quality, and reducing unnecessary processing of waste. INTRODUCTION Representative real time elemental analysis of conveyed ore quality using fully penetrative technologies has been available to the minerals industry since the 1990s. The Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) technique was developed into a conveyed material analyser and soon adopted by the cement and coal industries which recognised the benefits in real time quality management. These commodities were ideally suited to this measurement technique as operations generally involved conveying bulk material prior to processing. Measured quality was used to divert material to different destinations or used to control blending for improved quality consistency. Uptake in the minerals industry, however, has been slow until the last ten years, and particularly until the mid-2010s.

THESE days of great industrial and social problems in America produce many suggested solutions and great changes. The practical engineer and employer of labor views these problems differently from the labor leader or the social reformer, but as never before he is sincerely interested in solving them in a way that will be just to all. The inevitable tendency of the day is toward "industrial betterment," "safety," "industrial education," "efficiency," and the many other things' which have become so familiar to progressive employers. There is no longer any question that these things are worth while from both the hu¬man and economic standpoints. They "pay" in dollars and cents. The very center of final success in improving conditions and increasing the efficiency of workingmen must be the spirit of fairness and a knowledge on the part of the employer of how to deal sympathetically and intelligently with his employees. Every progressive employer knows how greatly he desires foremen, superintendents, managers and others who possess these qualities. On the other hand, we are all familiar with serious mistakes made by young graduates of engineering schools who have had no opportunity to develop these qualities, and who have no real appreciation of the worth of the workers. Indeed, one wonders whether much ill-feeling, labor difficulties, and many strikes could not be avoided if such men had the right attitude. Is there any way of remedying this condition? If this particular difficulty can be solved, if these young engineers, many of whom are our coming leaders of industry, can be given the right perspective and the right understanding of these other problems in addition to fair, sympathetic methods of handling men, many of our other problems will be solved-not at once, but gradually and permanently, as these men make good and become influential in paths of industrial righteousness and industrial peace. Many progressive employers of to-day have enlarged their own perspective and realize the great importance of enlarging the perspective of those who shall follow them.

THE constitution diagram of the iron-copper system derived by Daniloff' exhibits, at the iron-rich end, phase fields similar to those of the iron-carbon diagram. At 1484° 1094°, and 850°C there are, respectively, a 6-y-L peritectic, a y-E-Lperitectic, and a a-y-E eutectoid. The phase designated E is copper-rich, containing 4 pct Fe or less according to the temperature. The composition of copper-saturated ferrite (a-solid solution) has been determined previously only twice as a function of temperature. By electrical conductivity measurements, Buchholtz and Köster2 found 3.4 pct Cu in ferrite at a eutectoid temperature of 810°C. They represented the composition of saturated ferrite by the equation, log (%Cu) = 4.32-4125 (1/T) Gregg and Daniloff3 reported that Köster later modified his opinion, raising the indicated eutectoid temperature to 833 °C and the copper content of eutectoid ferrite to 3.7 pct. The literature contains several indications4-7 that the work of Köster and his co-workers is not reliable. Norton,8 using an X-ray method, found that 1.4 pct Cu dissolved in ferrite at the approximate eutectoid temperature of 850°C and that the solubility decreased to about 0.3 pct at 700°C. Below 700°C his experimental data show almost no change in solubility. These findings, although inconsistent with the work of Ruer and Goerens4 and of Smith and Palmer,7 have been used generally since their publication. In investigations involving the observation of arrests in temperature during continuous heating or cooling the precise location of the eutectoid temperature has been obscured by a large hysteresis. The more reliable work 579 where the results are not effected by this hysteresis indicates a eutectoid temperature between 840° and 850°C. The foregoing discrepancies, along with a few observations in this Laboratory relating to the precipitation of copper from ferrite, prompted us to rein-vestigate the lower temperature portion of the Fe-Cu system. In this investigation the solubility of copper in ferrite was obtained by the chemical analysis of high-purity iron equilibrated with copper-silver alloys. This method eliminated the necessity for retaining by a quench the physical state of the specimen existing at the equilibration temperature. With processing a variety of orebodies at Glencore’s Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) has come a changing mineralogy and more complex requirements for treatment in the concentrator. From mid-2013 and into 2014 the grind size required to achieve sufficient mineral liberation for production of a quality concentrate has reduced significantly. What was once a final P80 of 35–45 microns was forced to 20 microns. This has necessitated some creative changes to the flow sheet that previously had a 937?kW Vertimill regrinding a rougher concentrate to 40 microns. EHM is able to utilise an existing M10 000 3 MW IsaMill previously used for magnetite processing, to provide a quick convenient solution without large scale capital expenditures. Operating the Vertimill and IsaMill in parallel in closed circuit was successful at reducing the P80 of the regrind circuit to below 20 microns which increased the final concentrate grade by four per cent. This circuit and intermediate circuits used are discussed. A new process for extraction of titanium metal from its oxide is demonstrated. In this process, row material to be reduced is titanium oxide synthesized from ilmenite. The reducing agent is the Ca+CaCI2 two-phase mixture. TItanium is elaborated in the medium consisted of liquid Ca, Caq and solid TI02 at the temperature range 1200 to l300K by means of mixing mechanically the ingredients in the reactor into a smooth paste. Fluidity of the feed which enables continuous scheme depends on the CaCl2 content. The oxygen level of the reduced titanium is the range 500 to 1000 mass ppm varying with the operational conditions. The Ca+CaCI2 reducing agent is taken out from the electrolysis of CaC12 at 11401(, and this CaCl2 is produced by aqueous chemistry conversion using Cl2 gas recycled from the electrolysis.

Vigorous agitation of suspensions of coking coals in water (or light mineral oils) will often result in catast rophic loss of caking properties. It is shown that this deterioration is not a consequence of oxidation of the coals (by dissolved oxygen), but that it can be qualitatively connected with internal "solid-state" reactions which appear to derive their activation energies from cavitation of the liquid.

The Boliden Aitik concentrator in Sweden processes 2,000 tph of low grade copper ore. The plant consists of five grinding lines feeding four bulk flotation banks with a scavenger concentrate regrind mill, and a column cleaner circuit with a regrind mill. The authors installed a model-based expert, optimizing control system to maximize copper recovery in the bulk flotation circuit while maintaining an appropriate copper grade in the cleaner feed. The optimizing control system uses on-line assays and calculates and implements set points for cell pulp levels, air rates and reagent addition rates. It combines the power of a dynamic population balance model which estimates mineral liberation in each stream, an optimizer which computes appropriate set points and a rule-based module which implements the strategy. The benefits have been evaluated over three months. The model-based expert, optimizing control system generates a measurable increase in copper recovery, around 0.5 per cent and an optimized bulk concentrate grade. The need to maintain the optimizing control system and other practical aspects are discussed.

The Conda phosphate mine, eight miles north of Soda Springs in Caribou County, Idaho, was opened up by the Anaconda Copper Mining CO. in 1920. Except for brief periods, during the 20's and early 30's, the mine has maintained a continuous production, and 2,100,000 short tons of phosphate rock have been shipped to the company's phosphate fertilizer manufacturing plant at Anaconda, Mont., or to independent processing plants on the Pacific Coast; a small tonnage of the rock has been shipped to the Hawaiian Islands. The Phosphoria formation on the Conda property consists of two, commercial-grade phosphate beds separated by 147 ft of black to brownish colored phosphatic calcareous shales interbedded with softer mudstones, clays, and occasional narrow seams of oolitic phosphate. The main lower phosphate bed in the series averaging 7.1 ft in thickness, is called the "foot-wall bed," which lies coriformably on the Wells limestone formation, the 1atter often containing irregular bands of chert. The upper or " hanging-wall bed" of phosphate rock averaging 7.2 ft in thickness, is overlaid by thick quartzite beds, locally called the " Rex chert" member in the upper portion of the Phosphoria formation. (Fig 1.) There are two anticlines on the property with axis striking approximately parallel to the mountain range beneath which extensive development on phosphate rock has been conducted in the past, and is now in progress. The phosphate beds have been eroded to a large extent from the tops of these anticlines, leaving at least three well-pronounced outcrops of the phosphate beds exposed within the boundaries of the Anaconda Copper Mining Cornpany's properties. At present, mining operations in the Conda No. 3 mine are confined to the two phosphate beds along the east flank of the easternmost anticline, where the dips on the beds vary from 50° to 60° east, thereby affording favorable conditions for the sublevel mining system now in use. Mining operations formerly were confined to the footwall or lower oolitic phosphate bed because of its higher phosphate and vanadium contents (32 pct P²O5 and 0.29 pct V2 O 5); this bed averages 7.1 ft in thickness. The oolitic portions of the upper bed were of satisfactory grade, but the shale and clay partings (Fig 2) diluted the mined rock and could not he separated economically by selective mining or by sorting. Experiments in beneficiating this rock were carried on for a number of years. Recently, a simple washing process was adopted, which gave a satisfactory grade of concentrates and a high recovery of P² O5. In 1947 it was decided to expand Anaconda's production of treble superphosphate and phosphoric acid by approximately 90 pct. This rock will be obtained from the footwall and hanging-wall beds, and the rock from the hanging-wall bed will be benefici-ated at -Anaconda.l In order to take advantage of the previous development on the 500 secondary haulage level, short crosscuts will be driven at approximately 950 ft intervals from the existing lateral drifts through the hanging-wall shale beds. From the inner end of each crosscut, short lateral drifts will he driven in both directions, so that four working raises can he put up on the dip of the phosphate bed at proper intervals along each of the lateral drifts. OPERATION of a pilot mill of 100 tons' daily capacity during 1930 and 1931 proved that the copper minerals of the Colorado and Clay sections of the Morenci ore body could be successfully concentrated by the flotation process. Economic conditions caused postponement of further testing work until late in 1938 when the former No. 6 Concentrator at Morenci was converted into an experimental mill of 1500 tons' daily capacity which was known as the Test Concentrator. The Test Concentrator began continuous operation on April 3. 1939, using such crushing and grinding equipment of the No. 6 Concentrator as was appropriate. Modern classifiers and certain flotation machines were installed and later other types of flotation machines, a large grate-type grinding mill. mechanical screens, a short-head cone crusher, and a disk filter were added to the test equipment. Operation was uninterrupted until Dec. 31, 1941.

DURING a current program of research on the structure and properties of liquid sodium alloys, the need arose for information on the solubilities as a function of temperature of several B subgroup metals in liquid sodium. In the absence of reliable information in the literature for several of these systems, par- ticularly at temperatures in the range 100° to 300°C, an apparatus was constructed to determine solubilities by a direct melt-sampling technique, followed by wet-chemical analysis for both sodium and the solute metal. The details of the technique have been described previously.' The solubility of indium in liquid sodium was determined at eight temperatures in the range 100° to 270°C. The solubility as a function of temperature is shown on Fig. 1; this represents the liquidus line over this composition range. A cooling curve was plotted after the completion of the sampling and an arrest was observed at 94.9°C which must be interpreted as being the result of a eutectic reaction. By extrapolation of the liquidus to this temperature, the eutectic composition was estimated to be about 0.25 at. pct In. The present estimate of the eutectic temperature and composition are in good agreement with the values of 96.0° to 96.2°C and between 0.28 and 0.45 at. pct In, respectively, which were reported by Heycock and Neville.2 However, no further information on the liquidus of this system at the sodium-rich end could be found in the literature for comparison. It is shown that dewatering of fine coal particles (D50 : 21 microns) is enhanced near the point of zero charge. The coal surface is modified by the addition of copper ions and adjusting pH to precipitate surface active metal hydroxy species which promote agglomeration and produce low moisture cakes. Filtration kinetics data are used in calculating filter cake parameters from an integrated form of Darcy's law. The influence of copper ions and pH on filter cake parameters and correlations among them are presented.

REVISION of the United States mining law is needed. chiefly because of the following reasons: 1. The conceptions as to the characteristics of orebodies that were held at the time the statute of 1872 was enacted have since proved to be in many respects erroneous. 2. The operation of the existing law has been found to work unnecessary hardship upon many claimants to mineral land. 3. The existing statute fails in large degree to encourage development of mineral resources. 4. The existing law often produces conflict between placer and lode-claim rights, working unnecessary injustice to placer claimants. 5. The methods of establishing the rights of locators on United States mineral land are defective, and are not uniform throughout the States within which such lands exist. LAW OF THE APEX The objections to the so-called "law of the apex" are so well known as to require no detailed statement. It is sufficient to point out that the apex rule was based upon the notion that ore deposits consisted of well-formed veins included between definite walls, like the slice of ham in a sandwich. The fact is that veins conforming to that simple type are rare. Irregularity is the rule, and the chief metal production of the United States comes from masses which bear no resemblance to the tabular form of vein. Manifestly the law of the apex fails completely in such cases. Moreover, the tendency is constantly toward the exploitation of ores of lower grade than could formerly be worked, and such deposits exist mainly in the form of large irregular impregnated zones and masses, so that the future. development of our mineral resources would be continuously embarrassed by shadowy claims to extra-lateral rights by the locators of so-called apexes

"The average consumption of zinc dust for purification of zinc leaching solution is more than 25 kg per tonne of electrolytic zinc. Authors proposed to remove impurities in zinc leaching solution by electrolysis instead of cementation by zinc dust. The effects of copper and arsenic on electrodeposition of cobalt in zinc sulfate solution were examined fundamentally using a potentiostat. It is observed that cobalt is easily deposited on a cathode at potentials under -480mV with arsenic. Mesh cathodes of stainless steel and lead anodes were used in a small electrolytic cell and the electrolyte was circulated through 'the electrodes during the electrolysis. The effect of electrolyte circulating rate , pH, cell temperature, current density, and concentration of copper and arsenious ions on removal of cobalt were studied. Removal of Cd and Ni are also examined.IntroductionCobalt is difficult to remove from a zinc leaching solution by a simple cementation reaction using zinc dust. However, it is easily precipitated by zinc dust with co-addition of arsenious or stibinous oxide and copper ion in practical operations(I), (2), (3). The consumption of zinc dust for purification is 16-152 kg per tonne of electrolytic zinc and 65% of this zinc dust consumption is used for cobalt purification. The average retention time for purification of cobalt is 4.5 hours (1). A more economical process for purification is desired instead of zinc dust. The mechanism of this acceleration effect of copper and arsenious oxide on removal of cobalt are explained by the authorsas follows; a galvanic cell is formed between zinc dust and copper which is precipitated firstly, and cobalt is reduced on copper as Co-As alloy by this galvanic current(2). This assumption was confirmed in experiments using a galvanic cell with a membrane( 4). The following galvanic reactions occur between zinc dust and copper precipitate; on copper cathode,2H+ + 2e -= Hz(g)2Coz+ + 2HAs02 + 6H ++ 10e -= 2CoAs + 4HzOand on zinc anode,Zn = Zn = 2+ 2e –This galvanic current becomes almost zero in a zinc sulfate solution which includes only cobalt and no arsenious oxide, and cobalt is weakly deposited on a copper cathode. Cobalt deposition requiers a high degree of cathodic polarization. However, the galvanic current flows almost constantly in an electrolyte, which includes arsenious oxide, and the cathode potential is kept at about -500mV. Cobalt is precipitated as Co-As on the cathode.The authors assumed that cobalt may be removed by electrolysis at a very low current density instead of zinc dust and the following experiments were carried out. In the first part of this paper, the fundamental experiments using a potentiostat on the behaviour of cobalt in zinc sulfate solution are described. In the second part, the results of the electrolysis are reported. Cobalt is removed by a new type of an electrolytic cell, which was desigoed to <Iccelerate the rate of deposition of cobalt. The removal of cadmium and nickel in a solution which includes cobalt and arsenic are also examined."

A numerical technique has been developed to permit estimating the pressure gradient associated with laminar flow of thixotropic liquids through long Pipelines. For this purpose the pipeline is divided into a number of radial and longitudinal increments within which rheological properties of the fluid may be considered as constant at any time. Then, provided only that the fluid flow curve is defined at every duration of shear, it is possible to predict the instantaneous pressure gradient at any cross-section along the pipeline for each desired flow rate and pipe size. The technique consists of an iterative integration of shear rate to establish the appropriate value of the wall shear stress at each location. Consistency of fluid in the increment is determined by the flow history of that increment, while the radial flow associated with variations in velocity profile is accounted for by adjusting the width and radial position of the increment. A number of pressure profiles, computed at each of several flow rates, provide a convenient basis for pipeline design and pump selection. INTRODUCTION In recent years considerable attention has been given to predicting pressure drop associated with the isothermal laminar flow of time-independent non-Newtonian fluids in pipes and annuli. 6,11,12 The approach generally has been to develop analytical relationships between flow rate and pressure drop based on simple constitutive models which hopefully provide an approximate description of the rheological properties of the fluid. Analytical solutions are highly desirable since the influence of all pertinent parameters can be readily determined. Unfortunately, however, this approach is restricted to simple flow geometries and- frequently leads to erroneous results due to inadequacies in the model. In certain cases a solution may be obtained through applying appropriate numerical techniques.l,14 For example, a digital computer program is available for predicting the velocity profile and pressure drop encountered by any Newtonian or time-independent non-Newtonian fluid flowing under laminar conditions in a cylindrical pipe or annulus.l In this paper the consistency behavior of the fluid need only be described in terms of basic rheological data. Analyzing flow systems involving fluids with time-dependent rheological characteristics is considerably more complicated since substantial changes in consistency may occur because of sustained shear action. This sensitivity to shear frequently persists for several hours. Consequently, variations in pressure drop and/or flow rate resulting from the aging process and addition of unsheared or partially sheared fluid to the system must be considered for purposes of pipeline design. This paper outlines a numerical method for predicting the transient and steady-state laminar flow behavior of a thixotropic liquid in a pipeline of arbitrary length (i.e., at a specified constant flow rate, the instantaneous pressure gradient may be determined at any time after start up and at any location along the pipeline). Several such pressure gradient profiles, computed at several flow rates, may be combined to produce a complete portrait of the system response. This flow portrait provides a reasonable basis for pipeline design and for selecting a suitable pump characteristic. TIME-DEPENDENT RHEOLOGICAL BEHAVIOR The most familiar time-dependent rheological properties are those exhibited by thixotropic liquids. Many of these materials, particularly thixotropic crude oils, generally display an apparent yield stress in that a finite pressure gradient is required to initiate flow. "Abstract-A variety of techniques for interpreting systems of mineralized echelon veins is discussed using examples from Panasqueira and SW England. As aids for exploration and mine planning, and as a tool for ore reserve evaluation, particular emphasis is placed upon establishing vein morphology in the third dimension, and upon understanding vein dilation and propagation histories. Special attention is also placed upon investigating vein thickness and spacing relationships, and upon understanding vein segmentation. The relevant data for these techniques are all readily obtainable from stope and core sources.The vein systems described were produced in host-rock sequences that underwent incremental dilation in response to fluid overpressures, and individual veins display evidence for mineral infilling synchronous with their propagation. Echelon vein geometries resemble those reported from igneous dikes and sills: vein walls are stepped and veins are divided into segments arranged in echelons. Changes in vein geometry, from arrays to composite structures, reflect both the evolution of the vein system with time, and the changes occurring between the margins (arrays) and core (composite structures) of the system. These characteristic morphologies can be used to infer vein propagation and fluid injection trends, proximity of neighboring veins, and the shape of the system as a whole. The techniques are applicable to systems of echelon veins produced under tensile conditions in rocks where faults were absent at the time of vein formation, and where subsequent deformation has been minimal. Further work is required to assess the application to echelon vein systems formed within more complex tectonic regimes."

The Longwall Strata Control and Maintenance System (LoSCoMS) is designed to monitor shield pressures in real-time from longwall faces and to provide on-line information related to underground strata behavior and longwall mining operation. The information includes shield pressure data with statistical analysis of setting, developing and final pressures, prediction of shield pressures for the following shift or day, etc. and maintenance data on the shields. The LoSCoMS has been installed and tested at Shoal Creek Mine operated by Drummond Company, Inc. The system is providing valuable information to mine operators for better understanding of underground behaviors. As a result, it has become an effective tool for minimizing ground control hazards and reducing out of seam material.
