Pasminco Century MineÆs slurry pipeline was commissioned in November 1999. It currently transports zinc and lead concentrate slurries in batch form to the Port facility, 304 km away in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The Pipeline and the Port have gone through several stages of continuous improvement to match the successful ramp-up of the concentrator. Improvements in the Pipeline and Port Operations have included: commissioning of the first slurry pipeline that delivers two products in the same pipeline in batch mode; management of batches throughout the pipeline and port system to minimise cross contamination of both concentrates; operation of the slurry pipeline to achieve high availability of the system; operation of the pump station interfaced with preventive maintenance to minimise unplanned shutdowns; continuous monitoring of pressures throughout the single-station, 304 km slurry pipeline; redesign of the Rotary screw feeder; redesign of the Dryer Control System; installation of a larger Induced Draft Fan; optimisation of the dryer internals to achieve a product of narrow size distribution and pellet integrity; redesign of the stockpile ventilation system; and the development of a surface sealant. This paper describes the early commissioning of both the Port and the Pipeline and the continuous learning and Quality Improvement Project initiated at the Port to focus on concentrate quality given the propensity of the fine concentrate to self-heat during storage.

Deformation studies have been conducted at room temperature on single crystals of magnesium and magnesium alloys with thorium and with lithium. Single crystals oriented to suppress shear on the easily activated basal slip systems were deformed by plane-strain compression. Compression along the C axis was accommodated by {1011} banding. Compression perpendicular to the unconstrained c axis activated {1012} twinning, and, after virtually complete twinning, deformation continued by {1011) banding in the twinned material. Compression perpendicular to the constrained c axis was accommodated by the simultaneous operation of (1012) twinning against the constraint and (1011 ) banding. Although this orientation was favorable for {1010)(1210) prism and {1011}(1~10) pyramidal slip, these modes were not observed in pure magnesium or in Mg-0.5 pct Th. However, {10i0)(1~10) prism slip was observed in crystals of Mg-4 pct Li during compression perpendicular to the constrained c axis. Fracture in all materials occurred parallel to (1124) or {l~il) depending on the orientation and composition of the specimen. THE mechanical behavior of the hcp metals is strongly anisotropic. Although several slip systems have been reported the slip is cpmmonly in the directions of closest packing, the (1210),' and this does not produce strains parallel to the c axis. Hence the inherent anisotropy. The deformation mode most easily activated in magnesium at room temperature is (0001)(1210)- basal slip. Also {1010}(1~10) prism slip and {1011)(1210) pyramidal slip have been reported, primarily at elevated temperatures.2"4 However, at room temperature the shear stresses to activate the prism and pyramidal modes are roughly a hundredfold greater than that required for basal slip.'j4 Thus prism and pyramidal slip may be expected only under special conditions of loading. Strains normal to the basal plane can be produced by twinning, however. Many twinning modes have been reported for magnesium,' with (1012) twinning the most common and relatively easy to activate. Magnesium can deform by (1012) twinning when stressed along the c axis jn tension, but not in compression. In contrast, (1011) twinning is activated by compression along the c axis and not by tension. In addition to primary twinning, secondary twinning or slip can occur within the reoriented material of primary twins.' In general at least five independent shear systems must be active to bring about an arbitrary shape change such as that in the individual grains of a deforming polycrystalline material.' Because basal slip can_ provide only two independent shear systems and (1012) twinning can only accommodate an extension of the c axis, other deformation modes must be active in magnesium for an arbitrary shape change to occur. The purpose of this investigation has therefore been to study the various deformation modes in magnesium at room temperature, with special emphasis on those modes that are less easily activated. The effect of the alloying elements, thorium and lithium, has also been investigated. In polycrystalline aggregates, unambiguous identification of deformation modes is extremely difficult and the direct evaluation of the resolved shear stresses to activate them is not feasible. On the other hand, uni-axial tension and compression experiments on single crystals may not activate some of the- deformation modes because basal slip and/or {1012) twinning cannot be suppressed in most orientations. However, it should be possible to activate all possible deformation modes using oriented single crystals and plane-strain compression. Identification of active deformation systems and evaluation of the resolved shear stresses required to activate them should be facilitated. Wonsiewicz and Backofen have recently completed an investigation of the plasticity of pure magnesium crystals at various temperatures utilizing plane-strain compression and selected crystal orientations. This technique has also been used in the present work. The seven orientations selected for study are indicated in Table I. Plane-strain compression along the c axis (orientations A and B) should activate some deformation mode _other than basal, prism, or pyramidal slip, or (1012) twinning. In orientations C and D, prism or pyramidal slip would be expected to take place. When the compressive load is applied perpendicular to an unconstrained c axis (orientations E and F) the three slip modes should be suppressed but not (10i2) twinning. In orientation G, basal slip should occur.

Measurements of grain boundary sliding were made on polycrystal and bicrystal tensile creep specimens of Al-2 pct Mg at 500oand 700oF. Grain and pain boundary orientation factors were studied with respect to their effect on the magnitude and direction of grain boundary sliding. It was concluded that a large part of the observed sliding may be caused by the operation of slip crossing the grain boundaries. Supporting evidence for this model from other investigations is also given. GRAIN boundary sliding in metals during elevated temperature deformation has frequently been thought of as an independent mechanism with its own characteristic stress, temperature, and structure dependence. Further, it is common to regard the grain boundary as the weak link during creep deformation since: 1) the strength of apolycrystallinemetal, as meas-sured by creep rate or rupture life, decreases at\a more rapid rate when sliding comes into action, and 2) grain boundary sliding, as revealed by "boundary darkening" and fold formation is often the first visible deformation. On the other hand, more quantitative observations, in both polycrystals and bicrystals, have shown boundary deformation to be closely related to the over-all deformation of the specimen. The curve of grain boundary contribution to elongation vs time takes a shape similar to that of the total creep curve,',' and the apparent activation energy for sliding appears in most cases to have the same value as that for total creep.3 In order to reconcile these observations, one is left with these possibilities: 1) The grain boundary and grain deformation rates are both controlled by the same rate limiting processes. 2) The rate of sliding is limited by accommodation deformation in the grains. 3) Sliding is the consequence of grain deformation. 4) Grain deformation is dependent on prior grain boundary deformation. Alternatives 2) and 3) would view grain boundary sliding as occurring in series with another deformation process which could be rate controlling. McLean prefers item 3) as the sliding basis,4 where subgrain rotation results from dislocation accumulation in the substructure at the grain boundary. Crussard and Friedel's5 treatment of grain boundary migration considers that dislocations are forced into the grain boundary and are dissociated into dislocations with Burgers' vectors nearly parallel to the grain boundary. The movement of these partial grain boundary dislocations then produces the sliding. The results of this investigation have indicated alternative 3) to be the most appropriate and it is this aspect of grain boundary sliding which will be analyzed. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Three types of tensile creep tests were employed in this study: (I) A constant load test of one very coarsegrained polycrystalline specimen at 500° F, 3600 psi, 1 pct per/hr strain rate to examine the grain and grain boundary orientation factors in grain boundary sliding. (II) Constant strain rate tests of polycrystalline specimens at 510o and 715o F, 2 pct per/hr strain rate to determine the grain boundary contribution to elongation at very low total strains. (m) Constant strain rate tests of bicrystals of various grain and grain boundary orientations at 500°F, 2 pct per/hr strain rate to obtain further information on the orientation effects in grain boundary sliding. The material used in the tests was a high-purity Al-1'.92 mg alloy, kindly furnished by Alcoa. Its composition is given in Table I. The alloy is a solid solution at the test temperatures. The coarse grained polycrystalline specimen for test (I) was prepared by recrystallizingthe machined specimen, straining it about 1pct intension at room temperature and annealing at 900°F for 8hr. The constant strain rate specimens (11), with an 178 in. sq. by 1/2 in. long gage section, were cut from 1/8 in. thick sheet of cold rolled and annealed (8 hr at 1000oF) material. The latter specimens were supported in a special jig during the milling operations to avoid any bending, and the gage section was subsequently heavily electropolished to remove the cold-worked surface layer. "The effectiveness of sulphuric acid, nitric acid, and hydrogen peroxide pressure oxidation on the cyanide extractability of gold from a double-refractory concentrate is presented. Whileover90% of the sulphide content could be oxidized by either of the two acid pretreatments, only 65% was achieved by the peroxide oxidation. Carbon oxidation by both acid and peroxide pressure oxidation were less than 15%. Although the peroxide pressure oxidation pretreatment resulted in much lower sulphur and carbon oxidation, it gave pretreated residues with decreased levels of preg-robbing activities and higher gold recoveries during subsequent cyanidation, thus indicating some deactivation ofthe preg-robbing carbon during pretreatment with hydrogen peroxide. The refractoriness due to carbon preg-robbing activity was found to contribute more to the refractory behaviour of the concentrate than the occlusion of gold particles by the sulphide mineralization.IntroductionGold ores and concentrates are classified as refractory when a significant portion of the gold content cannot be extracted efficiently by conventional cyanidation, even after fme grinding (Weir and Berezowsky, 1984); (Demopoulos and Papangelakis, 1987). The refractory behaviour of precious metal ores and concentrates is generally attributed to two main factors: The presence of carbonaceous materials which could cause preg-robbing activity during cyanidation (Zaitseva et al., 1973); (Nice, 1971); Scheiner et al., 1971); (Eisele et al., 1983), or occlude gold-bearing minerals (Wells and Mullens, 1973); (Gasparrini, 1983); (Chen and Reddby, 1990), and the occurrence of sulphide minerals which can occlude gold, thus reducing the access of lixiviants (Schwartz, 1944); (Weir et al., 1986); (papangelakis and Demopoulos, 1990); (Michaelis, 1989); (Schweigart, 1965). When the refractoriness is due to a combination of these two factors, the ore or concentrate can be referred to as being ""double-refractory"". Because of the rarity of gold ores exhibiting this double-refractory phenomenon, only a few studies have been carried out on their suitability for pretreatment by existing techniques."

INTRODUCTION The planned 166 kilometer (103 mile) Metro rapid rail transit system in Washington, D.C. is being designed and constructed by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. At the present time, 112.6 kilometers (70 miles) of this system is in operation and contains 21 route-kilometers (13 miles) of rock tunneling, and 14.5 route-kilometers (9 miles) of soft ground tunneling. An additional 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) of single track tunnels in rock are planned and 6 additional contracts will consist of some 8 kilometers (5 miles) of twin tunnel, resulting in 16 additional linear kilometers (10 miles) of single track tunnel in soft ground. The Authority plans, upon its evaluation and the recommendation of the General Engineering Consultant, to include an alternative design incorporating the convergence confinement method of construction known as the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), for Sections E-5, E-6e and E-8a of the E-Route. The Metro system is constructed in a variety of geological conditions and crosses the boundary of two major geographic provinces. The unit-train concept of moving raw materials .is considered by many railroad men as the most signifigant contribution to reducing rail freight costs since the introduction of the diesel locomotive. The idea, which involves assigning railroad equipment to only one haul and keeping the equipment rolling results in the maximum utilization of equipment. For example before the unit train was plaged in servige on coal hauled to one of Mid. Continent's customers, about 900 cars and 9 locomotives were needed to move the coal requirements for this plant, compared with. 250 cars and 6 locomotives used by the present scheduling of unit trains. If the economics of unit-train movements are to be achieved, coal companies no longer can use railroad cars as small storage bins on wheels to accumulate their coal in trainload shipments, but, rather, must build large bins which incorporate facilities for the rapid loading of railroad cars in a minimum length of time. In this manner railroad equipment is operated at a high degree of efficiency 'with consequent dollar savings. After negotiations between Mid-Continent, the customers and the Railroad, it was decided a unit train loadout and storage facility at Carbondale was required in order to reduce the delivered price of coal to the customers and thereby contribute to the reduction in the cost of manufacturing steel. Carbondale was selected as the bin site location, because the cost of constructing a railroad to Redstone could not be justified for the tonnages anticipated.

At that time information about the new developments in the peculiar brown hematites of the region was becoming widely circulated and interest was especially keen. For some years exploration had been conducted with pits and trenches and so great an area had been shown to contain ore in the Mayari, Moa, and Cubitas or San Felipe districts, that the reserves conveniently situated for the consumption of American furnaces were estimated as quite two billions of tons. "The Ostwald ripening and growth and coarsening of the secondary dendrite arm are studied using a phase-field model. The phase-field parameters are obtained at a thin interface limit proposed by Kim et al. In Ostwald ripening analysis, the difference of the concentration due ·to· the curvature effect is shown. The third power of the average particle radius Rav is proportional to time and the ripening constant shows a good agreement with the value by Deppers et al. The particle radii distribution shows the transition behavior to attain a self-similar stationary shape. The growth and coarsening behavior of the secondary dendrite arm is also analyzed using a phase-field model. The estimated arm spacing and its dependence on time are in good agreements with experimental data.IntroductionThe ripening or coarsening process controls the microstructure during the late stage of solidification. The ripening phenomena are recognized firstly by the Ostwald [1]. The first quantitative analysis for the Ostwald ripening in the limit of vanishing solid fraction was provided by Lifshitz, Slyozov and Wagner (LSW) [2,3]. In their study, that the mean radius grows proportional to the cubic root of time and the size distribution of precipitations shows a ""self-similar"" shape are shown. Most of the studies for the Ostwald ripening confirm or predict these two general rules above. In case of finite solid fraction, the general rules are observed but the ripening constant is larger and the self-similar shape is wider than the LSW prediction respectively [4-6]. To analyze· the high solid fraction system, the theories that consider the solute field correlation are proposed [4,7-8]. In the theory, however, since the particle is treated as the point, the effect of the concentration field deviation from the monopole field should be taken into account. Recently the numerical simulation, in which not only diffusive transportation of solute but also convection effect is considered, has been done using a phase-field model [9]."

This paper is based on an evaluation project engaged upon jointly by Mount Isa Mines Limited nnd" IBM Austra]ia Limited. Mount Isa Mines Limited produces most of its copper from large underground open stopes within massive orebodies. Variations in the position and shapes of these stopes can result in improved metal recovery. An interactive graphics system has been developed to assist the mine design engineer optimise his design. The system can assist the engineer throughout the orebody visualis- ation, initial design and optimisation phases of his design. At any stage the engineer may call upon the display of gridded mesh data, digitized ore outlines or existing stopes or development (drives, cross-cuts). This information may be viewed in plan or any vertical section or in three dimensions with rotation. Tonnage and grade calculations may be quickly performed for initial stope outlines or for modifications to them during the optimisation phase. The system design is highly modular. An array of functions for the manipulation of coordinate and line information may be linked with the development or stope design functions in whichever way the designer desires.

STUDIES by many authorities have proved that nitrogen exerts an injurious influence upon iron and steel, but in the casehardening of steel by carbon, nitrogen has the advantage of accelerating the process of cementation. Its influence upon special steels is quite remarkable; it can produce the hardest layer ever known in metallurgical products-a fact hit upon by A. Fry and studied and ascertained by L. Guillet. As there have been very few investigations on the influence of nitrogen on special steels, the writer has listed important articles dealing with this problem and has conducted experiments on nitrification. He also has tested the influence of nickel upon the penetration of nitrogen in electric-arc welding.

WHY DO AN AUDIT? There is increased enforcement of environmental laws and regulations at State and Federal levels with attendant steep fines and even the possibility of jail sentences. We are all aware of environmental and public health and safety incidences (i.e., Love Canal, Bhopal) which have led to stringent laws and regulations (i.e., CERCLA, RCRA, SARA). In some cases, the courts have specified that a company institute an audit program as a condition of settlement of claims which related to lack of environmental control. The U.S.EPA issued an Environmental Auditing Policy Statement in the November 8, 1985 Federal Register (pp. 46504-46508) which encourages the use of environmental auditing by regulated entities. Elements of what EPA considers to be an effective environmental auditing program are outlined and briefly explained. These factors combine to indicate why there is a growing number of companies which have instituted an audit program. Briefly, the program can and should be used to monitor compliance with environmental regulations and corporate policy, to prevent violations, to improve policies and procedures, to raise the level of environmental awareness, to encourage communication among operations and all management levels about environmental problems, and to measure risks and control costs. AMAX Inc. has had an environmental audit program since the early 1970's. The AMAX Environmental Affairs Department, working with the Law Department, oversees and coordinates environmental audits and analyzes the findings which an audit reveals. Facilities are audited on a regular schedule; those having the greatest potential for environmental liabilities are audited at least annually; other facilities are audited less frequently. The question of who performs the AMAX audits was settled in favor of the audit team being independent of personnel from the facility being surveyed. Other methods of auditing could be the following: - Independent contractor (Appendix A) - Combination of independent contractor and in-house staff - Self-audit by site personnel The merits and demerits of who should conduct the audit can be analyzed to suit your particular needs. Next you need to decide on the procedure for the audit and the form for reporting and follow up. Environmental publications referenced in Appendix B can be helpful to you at this point. After deciding on the form of auditing, a schedule is prepared and followed to the closest extent possible. This schedule should be published and distributed to the sites so facilities know when they are being audited. This is not designed to be "a game of hide and seek." Various elements of the AMAX Audit Program are as follows: Team selection Pre-visit preparation Site visit Exit interview Report Using the audit Follow-up Team Selection The usual make-up of the team is the audit manager, the environmental specialist who normally provides assistance to the site or has knowledge about the operation, and a legal representative if his or her schedule allows. The legal representative will review the findings of the audit team if a personal visit is not timely or necessary. Size of the team can be expanded, but a minimum of the audit manager and the environmental specialist is best. Two sets of observations are better than one. The environmental specialist can also provide the rapport which is beneficial to creating the appropriate tone so that the site people will be as cooperative as possible. This is not to be an antagonistic exercise.

Proper control of the moisture content of natural gas is essential to reliable operation of gas transmission and distribution facilities serving northern markets. The moisture content of natural gas is usually determined by dew point measurement at the existing pressure. For any gas of constant moistrire content. the dew Point varies with the pressure. A correlation of the data of several investigators is prezented in graphical form by the authors. These data were correlated by the authors and F. M. Townsend, C. C. Tsao. M. I). Rogers. Jr.. and J. A. Porter. graduate students in chemi(.a1 engineering at the University of Oklahoma. Of articular interest are the hitherto unpublished low temperature data observed by Wickliffe Skinner. Jr., which are included in this correlation. PRESENTATION OF DATA The problem of interpreting water dew points, or saturation temperatures. of natural gas in terms of specific moisture con-tent has increased in importance during the past decade bec.arl.;e of extensive development.; in the transmission and petro-chemical phases of the natural gas industry. Virtually all gas transported to northern and eastern markets must be dehydrated to a low water vapor content to prevent hydrate formation in transmission and distribution lines and resultant interruption.; in gas deliveries. Complete dehydration is required in certain phases of tile petro-chemical industry involving low-temperature operations. It is a well-known fact that the water vapor content of pure hydrocarbon vapors and their mixtures at superatmospheric pressures cannot be predicted with accuracy by assuming validity of the ideal gas laws." Earlier interest in the general problem was concentrated on the water vapor content of pure hydrocarhons and hydrocarbon mixtures in the pressure and temperature ranges common to gas and oil producing reservoirs in order to obtain fundamental data for the improvement of production techniques and the furtherance of reservoir studies. Excellent data are published for pressures ranging from atmospheric to 10,000 psig and for temperatures ranging from 100° to 460° F4,9,10,11 and are found to be in close agreement. However, experimental data at high pressures and temperatures below 100°F are comparatively limited in scope. Experimental data in the lower temperature range have been reported by Laulhere and Briscoe.8 Deaton, et al,2,3 Hammerscllmidt,5,6 and wade," In general, the pressures employed in these investigations ranged from atmospheric to 1.000 psig while temperatures ranged from 32° to 120°F; i.e., the usual conditions encountered in gas transmission line operations, Additional data were reported by Russell, et al,12 at pressures as high as 2.000 psig and covering a rather narrow atmospheric temperature range. In 1947, Hammerschmidt published a correlation of all available data,' in which the water vapor content of gases at saturation. under high pressure and low temperature. was predicted by extrapolation. In 1948, Wickliffe Skinner. Jr.. presented data on the moisture content of a low nitrogen content gas at low temperature and at pressures ranging upward to 1.500 psia.1-3 Comparison of Skinner's experimental data with the extrapolated data of Hammerscllmidt revealed an appreciable variation in the lower temperature range. emphasizing the need for a new correlation which would rely on Skinner's data at lower temperatures. Careful scrutiny of available data suggested that presence of an appreciable quantity of nitrogen in a gas mixture may affect its saturated moisture content so that data obtained from gases with more than three per cent nitrogen were not used in this correlation. CORRELATION OF DATA Data employed in this correlation are presented in Table I. The data of Dodson and Standing.4 McKetta and Katz,9 and Olds, Sage and Lacey10 were compared and found to be in close agreement so that the data of Olds. et al, re-plotted in a more convenient form by the Humble Oil and Refining Co.,' were used for temperatures of 100°F and above. Skinner's data were used for temperatures below 40°F. Between these intermediate temperature limits, the data of Hammerschmidt.7 Wade" and extrapolated data of Olds. et al.1 were tabulated

At the Cominco Ltd plant in Trail, British Columbia, the Betts lead electrorefining operation requires that antimony and arsenic be present in the lead bullion for anode slimes stability control. Until 1986 the antimony and arsenic inputs from concentrates to the Lead Smelter needed to be supplemented with high antimony and arsenic content recycles from the Silver Refinery operation to maintain a satisfactory composition. Subsequently the antimony and arsenic inputs have increased as a result of increasing levels of antimony in Sullivan lead concentrate and the purchase of larger quantities of silver/gold bearing concentrates that inherently have higher antimony and arsenic levels. The increase has exceeded the limits required by the Betts process. It therefore became necessary to install a partial softening process downstream of the Continuous Drossing Furnace to satisfactorily control the bullion composition. Process control and oxygen injection techniques used in the partial softening process are reviewed. Approximately 8 tonnes/day of softening slag are produced having a combined antimony and arsenic content of 25 percent. This slag is reduced in a recently commissioned short rotary furnace followed by vacuum distillation of the metal for recovery of the antimony and arsenic values.

The basic methods to remove material from underground mines are to: convey continuously, batch in trucks, or batch in a shaft hoisting system. A critical aspect in shaft hoisting is accurately batch loading the conveyance or skip. During the 20th century, the almost universally accepted method of loading was via a measuring flask. A measured quantity of material was filled into the flask as the conveyance traveled through the shaft and then, when the conveyance arrived at the loading position, it was ædumpedÆ into the skip for hoisting. Two skip loading conveyor systems have been developed in Australia: BHP BillitonÆs Cannington Hoisting System, installed in 1996, is believed to be the first conveyor loading system designed for two skips. Two parallel conveyors were installed with a two-way gate controlling feed onto each belt. Cannington was ideally suited to conveyor loading as the very high ore density and relatively low production rate required a relatively small volumetric storage capacity on the weighed belt. Newcrest MiningÆs Telfer Hoisting System, which is to be commissioned in 2005, consists of a single slewing conveyor loading each skip with 32 tonnes of ore. The development of this system eliminates the two-way transfer, improves the accessibility and minimises the excavation required. While every hoisting system must be considered on its merits, conveyor loading offers significant advantages to the Mining Industry in the 21st century.

Minor magnetic anomalies which may be un represented on a magnetic contour map can be extracted from the original survey data and plotted by the described method to provide a rapid interpretation of the magnetic survey, provided that the data has been recorded digi- tally on magnetic tape. The example used comes from 40 kilometers south of Charters Towers, Queensland.

Selective flocculation studies carried out with iron ore tailings generated at Kudremukh iron ore plant indicate that a concentrate containing 63% iron can be obtained from the tailings containing 34% iron with around 60% recovery. This opens up the possibility of recovering most of the iron lost in the tailings generated at 2 kt/h (2200 stph) while processing 22 Mt (24 million st) ore per year. This would mean that the productivity could increase by around 50%. In these studies, it has been established that caustic degraded tapioca starch is a most effective agent for selective flocculation. While potato starch after caustic degradation can also be used, neither the parent starch nor the amylopectin compound is as effective.

In this decade mining companies in western Canada have searched for reliable and inexpensive ways to improve mine productivity. Truck dispatching systems, equipment vital sign monitoring and sensing, vehicle guidance systems, have all been considered. In this paper the off -highway vehicle monitoring systems used or planned to be installed at surface coal mines in western Canada are described. The monitoring systems are divided according to their function and application; installation and testing procedures are described, as well as the economic benefits to the mining operation.

Stress -induced ordering of carbon atoms is studied in a series of Fe-Mn-C alloys. A prominent peak is found in the vicinity of 280°C at frequencies of the order of 1.0 cps, with an associated activation energy of 37 kcal per mole. The height of the peak is linearly rekzted to the concentration of carbon in solution. The distortion of octahedral holes by manganese atoms appears to be predominant over carbon-carbon pair interactions. RELAXATION by stress-induced ordering of point defects is expected whenever the introduction of these point defects produces distortions which have a lower symmetry than that of the lattice. Under zero stress, the isolated point defects occupy the crystallographic-ally equivalent positions in the lattice, as these represent states of equal energy. However, if the defect sites are asymmetric, application of an uniaxial stress will split the energy states, and a redistribution of the defects among various states will take place. This is the case of the internal friction peak called the Snoek peak,1 resulting from isolated interstitials in bcc metals. The interstitial sites in this case have tetragonal symmetry. In the case of fcc and hcp lattices, such an effect is not expected from isolated point defects because of the symmetrical nature of the interstitial sites. However, internal friction peaks arising from interstitial diffusion have been reported both in hcp2,3 and fcc4-8 lattices. These peaks are often explained on the basis of stress-induced ordering of interstitial solutes, caused by the deviation of interstitial sites from their cubic symmetry through the presence of nearby defects. In the case of fcc lattices, evidence for interactions of both the substitutional-interstitial4,6,13 and interstitial-interstitial types5'798'14 have been presented by various investigators. The purpose of the present investigation was to study the internal friction peak attributed to the diffusion of interstitial carbon atoms in high purity austenitic manganese steels and to account for the peak in the light of the existing models. MATERIALS The Fe-Mn-C alloys used in the present investigation were made in two different ways, designated as Type I and Type 11. Type I alloys were made from high purity Fe-Mn alloys obtained in the form of 0.04- in.-diam wires from Materials Research Corporation, Orangeburg, N.Y. These alloys were carburized to different levels using gas mixtures of H2 and CH4 at 1000°C. Type I1 alloys were made in this laboratory starting with zone refined iron, spectrographically pure manganese, and spectrographically pure carbon. They were melted in an argon arc melting furnace and drawn into 0.04-in.-diam wires. All the wires were annealed at about 900°C for 3 hr prior to the internal friction experiments. After the measurements of internal friction, the phases in the samples were identified by X-ray diffraction and the carbon determined by the combustion method. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE In the present work, a classical Ke-type pendulum was used. The details of the equipment were described previously by D. T. Peters.9 Dry helium at 40 torr was used in all the experiments. The internal friction, measured as the logarithmic decrement of the torsion amplitude of vibration was determined as a function of temperature, from ambient to about 500°C. The background internal friction was assumed to have the form of the exponential of the inverse temperature and was subtracted from the raw data. The height of the peak was measured at the position of the maximum in the plot of the internal friction versus temperature. The activation energies of the peaks were measured by the peak shift method. The internal friction values for an alloy were obtained as a function of temperature at different frequencies of vibration. The position of the peak changes with frequency, the higher the frequency the higher the peak temperature. The activation energy of the process associated with the peak is obtained using the formula

The slags derived from the smelting of lead and copper ores are composed essentially of silicates. The problems arising from the smelting of these ores consequently involve the study of silicate fusions. In the absence of specific knowledge concerning the compounds occurring in slags, it has been the practice of metallurgists to treat them in terms of their total chemical composition. Slags have been classified as monosilicates, bisilicates, sesquisilicates, and subsilicates according to the relative amounts of oxygen in the acid and basic radicles of the hypothetical salt produced. While this has been a useful guide to metallurgists in computing the furnace charges, it falls far short of a basis for the scientific investigation of slags. In order to understand the nature of a slag as a whole it is necessary to learn the physical and chemical properties of the mineral compounds which go to make up that slag. The efficiency with which an ore is smelted in a furnace depends primarily on the physical properties of the compounds formed during the operation. When the melting points and fields of stability of each of the mineral compounds in slags have been established, it will be possible to determine the properties of any given slag by examining the nature and amounts of its mineral constituents. Earlier Investigations In 1884 and succeeding years an extensive survey of lead and copper furnace slags was made in Europe by Vogt, and a large part of the present knowledge of the subject is due to his publications.' Vogt's interest in artificial fusions was directed primarily towards the explanation of problems in igneous and economic geology and his subsequent works have been confined wholly to that subject.
