This paper provides a brief overview of the history of the Chaffers Dewatering Project which was successfully commissioned in August 1993. Until the end of 1992 the `Superpit' and the deep mines of the Golden Mile had all been dewatered by a staged pumping system from the 28 level in the Lake View Shaft, which was removed at that time when the Lake View Mine was absorbed into the Superpit. Feasibility analysis had indicated that adaptation of oil industry technology offered the greatest potential for a low cost solution to the problem of dewatering the open pit and deep mines. A KCGM engineer and one of the authors visited the Jackson oilfields to look at the deep well pumping technology in use there in early-1991. In the final analysis a new dewatering station was established in the 23 level crushing station of the Chaffers Shaft using conventional plunger pumps, but the rising main was screwed 178 mm OD (7 inch) casing the suspended from the surface to a depth of 686 metres, and was installed using oilfield personnel and methods. Only the second installation of its kind in Australia, the project achieved the dewatering objective at about half of the capital cost of the more conventional approach and at lower operating costs as well.

It is scarcely necessary to augment or amend the "Appreciation" of Dr. Douglas, from the pen of Dr. Albert A. Ledoux, which appeared in January, 1916, in Bulletin No. 109 of the Institute. The author of that admirable summary enjoyed the great privilege of expressing while Dr. Douglas was yet among us (though already marked for death) the love and esteem with which we all regarded him. But now that his earthly life has ended, the historian must still be the eulogist. No line need be added or deleted in the portrait of him already drawn; it has only to be accepted now as a true likeness, and hung in the gallery of the immortals, illuminated by the crowning glory of another world. James Douglas was born at Quebec, Canada, November 4, 1837. His father, James Douglas, was a distinguished physician and surgeon, known in many lands, especially in the Orient, and famous in his own country for his philanthropy as well as his skill, having established and directed for many years the first retreat for the insane in the Dominion. of Canada. One of the latest literary labors of the son was the editing and publishing of his father's journal and reminiscences—a fascinating volume, the review of which, though a tempting task, I must here forego. Nearly fifty years ago, I had the great pleasure of spending an hour with the elder Douglas, who guided me through his collection of Egyptian and Asiatic treasures. I might almost say souvenirs; so many of them were connected with personal experiences and exalted personages. The veteran's memory had already begun to fail with age, but his vivacity and imagination glowed all the more brightly; and his reminiscences of travel and adventure were embroidered with Oriental magnificence. I felt, after that hour, as if I had visited a stately, half-ruined edifice, overgrown with vines and flowers. The father's genius, adventurous spirit and generous philanthropy descended to his versatile, yet practical son. Like other men of such temperament, James Douglas tried many things before circumstances beyond his own control forced him into the line of his principal lifework. At the age of 18, he was sent to the University of Edinburgh, where he studied for two years. Blasting is one of the most important operations involved in surface coal mining. The removal of over-burden waste in surface coal mines of India had experienced many improvements in terms of blasting, explosives selection, blast design, equipment selection, deployment. etc. Two case studies of very large surface coal mines have particular importance in their blasting operations. Both these units have been equipped with large capacity excavating machines, hauling units and also have some difficult mining situations. Blasting is done in benches in close proximity to human dwellings and over coal seams developed by underground methods with problems of high wall stability etc, as well. The various steps taken to improve the blasting operations ensure smooth operation of the equipment to meet the targetted coal production.

"Two important aspects of excavation performance of TBM are advance rate and cutter replacement/ring consumption, which is closed to the cost and construction duration of the project. To achieve this, a database of TBM parameters and the geological-geotechnical conditions during the excavation of Yinhanjiwei was compiled and analyzed. Relationships between different geological and TBM operational parameters were investigated. Results of analyzes show that there are qualitative correlation between Field Penetration Index (FPI) and rock geological parameters. And strong relationships between FPI and operational parameters are suggested. In this study, the cutter replacement and ring consumption were analyzed using statistical method for preliminary estimation in similar conditions. 1. ITRODUCTION Hard rock TBM is widely used in tunneling project nowadays because of its advantages to conventional drilling and blasting, especially in long tunnels. The biggest advantage is its high advance rate. However, rock conditions of tunnels are complicated. So TBM performance becomes a primary topic in tunneling engineering, which includes of rate of penetration, utilization, daily advancement, cutter consumption and so on. Many prediction models have been developed to estimate the TBM performance in the project planning phase. The most widely accepted and used models around the world are semi theoretical CSM model (Rostami and Ozdemir, 1993; Rostami, 1997) and the empirical NTNU model (Blindheim, 1979, Bruland, 1998).With increasing uses of TBMs in different ground conditions, an increasing number of researchers have developed new models in order to predict the performance of TBM more accurately in similar geological conditions.(Gong and Zhao, 2009; Hassanpour et al.,2009, 2010, 2011, 2014; Delisio et al., 2013; Delisio and Zhao, 2014)"

FOR several years I have been engaged in studying the behavior of iron' and steel under varying conditions of tension and compression, as well as of shock and abrasion. Some of these observations have been communicated to the Institute at various times. Within the past year I have been looking at the various observations that I have made as a whole, and have been led to the conclusion that there is a regular law of fatigue and refreshment of metals, and that the change which produces either the fatigue or refreshment is a chemical one, which is, however, in almost all cases accompanied by physical and molecular changes at the same time. That metals under conditions that were more or less well understood became worthless, has been known for many years. It has been known to blacksmiths that iron and steel, when improperly treated in their fires, become "burned," as they call it, and could no longer be used, and some of them have had a scrap heap into which such material was thrown. A few of them knew that after a period more or less long the iron or steel recovered some of its original properties and could, with many precautions, again be used, but that these phenomena followed any law has not to my knowledge been announced. My attention was first attracted to the varying conditions under which iron and steel rails break in service. It was not long before I became convinced that there was a general law applicable to all metals which allowed of their being used with safety within certain limits, and caused their rupture when the use extended beyond these limits, and this law I have called the law of fatigue of metals. When we observe the causes of deterioration in iron and steel rails, we find that they are principally shocks, either slight and frequent, like those produced by the passing of a train over a road-bed in good order, which produces a vibration. sensible to the ear laid on the rail, for very long distances, but distinctly audible for only a short one; or from sudden and heavy blows, like the descent of the locomotive and each car successively from a high to a low rail. * Read at the Montreal Meeting, September, 1879.

I was wondering whether we were going to adhere to our text. It seems to me that we are having a very remarkable meeting of mining engineers this year, because no matter what the texts may be that are assigned to us, we get back toward something higher; we turn to the consideration of questions of ethics, and of applied Christianity. Yesterday we listened to the most eloquent and remarkable address by Mr. Rickard in memory of Dr. Raymond, and it was told us that he was to speak about Raymond's achievements as an engineer. He did say considerable on that subject, but he was himself carried away with the spirit of the man and moved us all by his portrayal of Dr. Raymond's continued and fruitful labors for the betterment of mankind—that is to say, his religion. Our President asked me if I would say something this afternoon and I find in the bulbtin that the text of the discourses which we are to have here this afternoon is "Internlttional Cooperation in Mining in North America." But again I find that the eloquent speaker who has just preceded me has dwelt largely on ethical and spiritual cooperation rather than upon cooperation in mining. That is, cooperation as men, rather than solely as engineers. The imaginary line dividing Canada from the United States, unmarked by fort or military post, was mentioned by a previous speaker. There are going to be in the future, I am sure, fewer entanglements of the barbed wire of tariff discrimination along our border-—to that end let us cooperate. But there has always been a reciprocity in men. A Canadian conceived and created our great transcontinental line, the Great Northern Railway; an American made the Canadian Pacific what it is. In mining and metallurgy, American engineers, backed by American capital, have built up great Canadian industries while Canadian experts have developed some of the resources on this side of the line. They have done much more than develop our resources; some of them have been our leaders in sympathy for labor. It is therefore not a question of creating a spirit of cooperation, but of giving it freer scope and a fuller realization of fraternity—or, to use the word now more common and of deeper significance—brotherhood. Briefly, an open stope is one in which the ore is taken out and no filling is put in; the only support for the walls may be posts or pillars of ore. Such a method is limited to orebodies with strong walls and ore strong enough to stand unsupported over the back of the stope. Details vary and depend on the dip of the vein, mode of breaking ground, method of handling broken ore, and so forth. The examples given are the Beat-son, Birmingham district, Mineville district, and Cornucopia.

The defect in wire known as "cuppiness" has appeared and disappeared from time to time but the exact cause of its appearance or disappearance has not heretofore been known definitely. This defect is not limited to one particular metal or alloy but seems to be found at various times in all of the materials that are drawn into wire. Fig. 1 represents cuppy wire made from an aluminum alloy and Fig. 2 illustrates copper wire that became cuppy in drawing without intermediate annealing. Differences of opinion are current among the manufacturers of wire and in the literature (see bibliography at end of paper), some believing that the source of the trouble lies in segregation in the wire rod, oxides, sulfides, slag, etc.; others that the trouble is created by an unevenness of stress distribution across the section of the wire, usually thought of as being a function of die shape. All of the published work is of a qualitative rather than a quantitative nature. With this in mind, it was deemed advisable to make a study of the shape of the wire-drawing dies, as well as the oxygen content of the copper to be drawn. Experimental After several methods were tried, it was found that by studying the contour of the butt-end of the rod after drawing a measure of the "working" across the section of the wire could be made. The butt-end of the annealed rod was not sheared but was sawed off. The end was then smoothed with a fine file so that the plane of filing was perpendicular to the drawing axis. It is to be noted that this method is not an absolute measure of the distribution of cold working but is a very good indicative means of studying comparative values. The method of examining a tension break in wire was found to be the most sensitive in detecting cuppiness. Other methods, such as microscopic examination of longitudinal sections, X-ray radiographic studies, etching away of outer layers with nitric acid, and fracture by bending, can all be used to identify cuppy wire but the tension break will give the fracture characteristic of cuppiness before any of the other methods can

This paper describes the development and installation of equipment for continuously measuring separating density in the dense medium cyclone circuits of the four million tpa Port Kembla B/C plant coal washeries. Monitoring equipment consisting of magnetic coils and differential pressure cells were installed in U-tubes taking the full flow of magnetite from the drain sections of the product drain and rinse screens. The monitoring equipment measures overflow magnetics concentration and overflow density continuously and has operated since 1989. From these measurements and calibration trials, the separating density of operating cyclone modules can be inferred reliably. Variographic analyses of the data show that medium density control to +/- 0.002 RD units and separation density control to +/- 0.007 RD units are achievable. Either method for measuring separation density can be used with approximately the same accuracy, although the overflow density measurement technique suffers from the need to have regular flushing of the Dp cells which complicates the signal analysis. Data from the plant shows that separation density can be controlled by regulating medium density, but the assumption of a constant offset between medium density and separation density is erroneous.

The Porgera Joint Venture and Dyno Nobel have commissioned a joint project to optimise the drill and blast operations to increase the overall profitability of the mine. One of the aims of this project is to increase the throughput of semi autogenous (SAG) mills by optimising the blast fragmentation. A number of test blasts were conducted during the period May 2000 to January 2002 and the ore from these blasts was campaigned through the mill. The data from these trials suggested up to 15 per cent increase in the SAG mill throughput with high energy blast designs. However, changes in ore geology (shape, structure and hardness) and potential ore dilution/loss and wall damage have raised concerns about the economic benefits of these designs over the entire orebody. The lack of a system to track the economic benefits of these modified designs has also compounded these concerns. PJV and DynoConsult, the consulting arm of Dyno Nobel have initiated steps to minimise the potential for ore dilution and wall damage resulting from these modified designs. DynoConsult worked with Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) to develop and implement a blast management system to track the quality of blast implementation and down stream process benefits. This paper discusses the implementation of the system and the results achieved to date.

Large cryslals of high-purily iron (99.996+ pcl) cannot be obtained by the usual strain-ameal technique. Repealed phase transformation by thermal cycling prior to crilical deformation improves the capabilily of cryslal growith but fails to yield satisfactory crystals. Imperfect columnar crystals can be produced by the phase-transition method. The addition of a small amounl (0.005 wl pet) of nilrogen IT was reported'-4 that for metals of very high purity the usual procedures of the strain-anneal technique fail to produce large crystals. This was eliminates practically all the difficulties in crystal growth by the normal strain-anneal procedures. An actual example is presented, showing that most parts of a strip have been converted into a large crystal by this method. The addition of nitrogen, which can be removed from iron with less difficulty, is believed to be more desirable than carbon additions for the same purpose. thought to be due to the strong tendency for recovery in the high-purity metals: hence the critically strained matrix undergoes polygonization instead of recrystallization upon annealing for crystal growth. Although the copper segregation process has been known as a method for treating oxide copper ores since the 1920's, the reactions involved in this process are still a matter of conjecture. However, the evidence turned up in a recent series of experiments at Asarco's Central Research Laboratories strongly indicates that some of the proposed reactions may not be occurring. Experimental work on oxide copper ores from the Sagasca mines in Chile led to the discovery of the copper segregation process in 1923. It was found that the reduction of the copper with coal at about 700°C occurred on the surface of the coal instead of remaining disseminated in the ore. The unusual behavior of the copper, which caused it to migrate from the ore particles to the coal, was traced to the presence of a small quantity of sodium chloride occurring in the ore. Further experiments with oxide copper ores proved that the presence of a halide, either occurring naturally or admixed with the ore, caused the copper to migrate from the ore particles and to segregate in the charge.

Liquids containing suspended solids are encountered in most mineral processing applications. Solids levels cover a very wide range, from ppm levels in cooling water systems to slurries containing greater than 70% solids. When the aqueous phase is recycled or further processed, a solid/liquid separation process is used. Chemical additives used to carry out this process are called coagulants and flocculants. In other cases, one seeks to control or modify the properties of the suspension. Dispersants are chemicals used to aid in suspending solids in a liquid as well as to control the properties of the resulting suspension. Dispersants find a range of uses in mining and mineral processing such as scale control, filter aids, flotation aids, and slurry viscosity modification. Materials used as dispersants include inorganic salts, alkalies, organic surfactants, and polyelectrolytes. This paper discusses the use of dispersants in mineral processing, with an emphasis on control of slurry viscosity. The mechanism of dispersion and factors that affect the choice of dispersant will be discussed.

The wide- spread introduction of roof bolting into coal mines and metal mines is truly phenomenal. The very fact, however, that his paper does cover such a wide range of conditions, makes it the more imperative that any conclusion drawn from his analysis be very carefully considered for any specific case, for in making such analysis the type of prime mover and size must be selected for some one condition which might not be the proper selection had some other condition been assumed as the basic one, resulting in an unfavorable comparison under all conditions except that condition assumed. This paper describes a method of measuring initial and long-term deformations which occur in the medium surrounding mine accessways, and discusses the importance of this type of measurement in assessing support-problem areas. Delineated are (1) description of the rock-deformation monitoring equipment, (2) results of two field tests which monitored rock deformation around 4-foot-diameter raise bores, and (3) a numerical-analysis (finite-element) technique to correlate theoretical with experimental results. Instrumentation developed provided the sensitivity and resolution needed to measure rock deformation around a full-scale raise bore during excavation. Results of the tests conducted at the Lucky Friday mine, Mullan, Idaho, show the relationships between (a) de- formation vs. time, and (b) deformation vs. bit progress. Based on theoretical evaluation of the initial deformation, the medium appeared to behave elastically. Using an estimated field stress of 5,500 psi and Poisson's ratio of 0.20, the gross modulus of elasticity of the rock was calculated to range from 3.15 to 6.0 x 106 psi (with one outlier which was determined to be >12 x l06 psi).

Discussion of the paper of DORSEY A. LYON and ROBERT M. KEENEY, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 104, August, 1915, pp. 1707 to 1730. LAWRENCE ADDICKS, Douglas, Ariz.-I think papers of this character, while general in, nature, are of particular value and interest, because when we figure on competing with the East in electrometallurgical industries, on account of the cheap power on the Pacific Coast, we have to take two or three things into account. In the first place, power very rarely amounts to more than 20 per cent. of the total cost of an operation, even .though it be electrometallurgical, and I think it is the common opinion among those who are not familiar with those particular industries, that it amounts to more than 50 or 60 per cent. Take copper refining; we may say that it is 15 per cent. of the total cost. In the second place, around New York City, with 100 per cent. load factor and a reasonably large load, say 10,000 kw., we can generate from a certain class of coal 1 kw.-hr. for about 0.3c. I might say, however, that 0.3c. does not include overhead charges, interest on the investment, etc. The third factor we have to consider out here is that any product to be salable, must command a retail market. It would be useless to produce wire bars here on the Pacific Coast because there is no place to roll them. If we were going to establish a copper refinery, that part of its output which goes into wire bars would have to be taken care of by building a rolling mill alongside of it to turn it into wire and finally make a product that is salable. I do not think, however, that Mr. Lyon need have excluded copper refining from his industries. There are perhaps 50,000,000 lb. of copper a month refined in this country on a custom basis. I think the smelting companies would be very glad to build refineries here if conditions warranted it. The recent extensions of the Great Falls refinery and of the Tacoma refinery in the last few months give evidence of that.

In a paper on the manufacture of artificial fuel, read at the Philadelphia meeting of February, 1878, I enumerated the difficulties which I had to overcome before succeeding in the mixing of coal-dust and clay, the compressing of the same mixture, and the water-proofing of the lumps. The drying of the lumps, after leaving the press, was the remaining difficulty, and it mas expected that a plan devised by Dr. Charles N. Cresson, of Philadelphia, would enable us to dry the fuel as rapidly as it was moulded, and that a continuous production could in that way be obtained. The company was reorganized. The works were purchased by the new company at an assignee's sale, and the oven was modified, according to Dr. Cresson's plan. Anticipating a possible failure, I had prepared a plan by which I expected to be able to demonstrate that anthracite coal dust nixed with pitch, could be manufactured with our present machinery slightly modified ; so that after all, if we were compelled to give up the attempt to make fuel for domestic use, there was a possibility of succeeding in the manufacture of a good steam-fuel. The plan suggested by Dr. Cresson for drying the pressed lumps of coal-dust cemented with clay, did not work as well as we expected. It enabled us to dry more fuel than we did before, but it could not be made to dry more than one half of the lumps produced by the press. The plan mas abandoned, and I was authorized to experiment with coal-dust and coal-tar pitch. The cement which is used in Europe to conglomerate coal-dust is usually dry pitch, which is prepared by separating from the tar, at a temperature of 572' Fahrenheit, the volatile matters which it contains. Some manufacturers, however, employ crude tar, others, a rich tar, which has been cleared of 25 per cent. of its volatile substances, by heating it to 392' Fahrenheit. But with common tar very weak fuels are obtained, which do riot burn well, and give out a strong smell and a great deal of smoke ; it is also necessary to subject them to a baking process, in order to solidify them, and to eliminate the more volatile of the materials contained. This operation of course requires a special plant, the cost of which increases sensibly the price of manufacture, without counting the products
