"Why geophysics? We will have to drill anyway." Reliance on geophysical methods for detailed target appraisals will increase as direct surface evidence becomes more subtle. This will create a need for more effective and efficient geo- physical programs. Numerous computer-based techniques that deal with a broad range of geophysical problems are described in the literature. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a framework for the systematic application of these techniques to effect an overall optimization of the geophysical appraisal. The concepts described are not technique specific, but should serve as a guide for increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of any geophysical program. Fig. 1 shows a generalized flow chart of the major aspects of the program described. The three main subdivisions of a 'geophysical program are discussed: (1) survey design, (2) data processing, and (3) data interpretation. Detailed flow charts, outlining the goals, the requirements for meeting the goals, and the steps followed within each subdivision are presented at the beginning of each section. The objectives and type problems of each subdivision are defined, followed by a description of applicable computer methods. . References are cited that give a general cross section of computer techniques available in the literature, and examples are given in each subdivision to demonstrate basic concepts and the use. of computers in solving the type problems.

A survey of leaching systems for the dissolution of gold has been undertaken and their advantages and disadvantages evaluated both from their effectiveness at leaching and their compatibility with carbon- in-pulp (CIP) and resin-in-pulp recovery. In the near future it is almost certain that cyanidation in some form will remain the leaching system of.choice although economic and environmental pressures could see the introduction of other leaching systems particularly for treating refractory gold ores. The most likely alternative leaching systems appear to be acid chlorine, acid thiourea and ammoniacal thiosulphate. INTRODUCTION High grade reserves of readily recoverable gold ores are gradually being depleted which, inevitably, must create a greater awareness amongst gold producers, of the efficiency and, in some cases, the suitability of present day metallurgical processes for treating low grade, complex and refractory deposits. One of the key steps in the extraction of gold is the dissolution of the metal using chemical reagents which, ideally, should be cheap or recyclable, selective, non-toxic and compatible with down-stream recovery processes. In practice, meeting all these critera is difficult - if not impossible - particularly in view of the stringent environmental impact requirements which must be met Nowadays.

This paper describes the investigations and results of monitoring of deformations of houses located within the area of influence of a pillar collapse over the Westfalen No. 3 coal mine near Ipswich, Queensland. The subsidence resulted in minor subsidence of at least 18 modem houses and serious damage to 4 others. The history of the events and the measures taken to deal with the physical problems arising are described. The investigations and results are described and related to the mining methods and geology. The stability of coal pillars up to 9.6 m high was considered and computer modelling undertaken to relate surface subsidence to estimates of the extent of pillar failure. Assessments were made of the likely extent of subsidence during the incident. Measurements of distortion and tilt were obtained as the ground slowly subsided and criteria established to determine when the structures were deemed to be unsafe. Detailed surveys of houses affected or anticipated to become affected were also undertaken. Four houses were condemned and subsequently demolished as a result of excessive tilt. The methods of assessment are described and the implications of the results related to the various' house designs.

The total production of oil in Kentucky during the year 1943 reached 7,010,776 bbl., which is more than at any time since 1930. Of this total, 5,287,659 bbl. was produced from the counties west of the Cincinnati arch, 692,359 bbl. from the 18 new pools opened during the year, and 3,260,765 from the Smith Mills pool, which was discovered in August of 1942. This is an important increase in western Kentucky in spite of the low price of crude, and demonstrates effectively the desire of the industry to cooperate in meeting the increased demands made by the war. Western Kentucky Two deep tests were drilled in the Kentucky portion of the Mississippi Embayment this year. Both were drilled to test the St. Peter. One well, drilled in Marshall County by the Adams Oil and Gas Co., did not encounter any St. Peter sandstone but drilled 650 ft. of formation below the position of the St. Peter and above the true Knox dolomite. The other well, in Ballard County, was reported to have tested the St. Peter and to have been temporarily abandoned at 3069 ft. At this depth the well probably was stopped in about the same formation as the Marshall County well. No accurate information is available on the Ballard County well. Several new producing areas were added to the list of fields in the western Kentucky coal basin, in Daviess, Henderson, McLean, Ohio, Union and Webster Counties. The Smith Mills pool was enlarged and production was found in the McClosky (Ste. Genevieve) in addition to the Cypress sandstone from which much of the earlier production had been obtained. There was some interest during the year in testing the Devonian and Silurian formations in the area south and east of the western Kentucky coal basin. In the fall of 1943, a 15 to 20-bbl. well was drilled in Allen County and two more wells are now being drilled. The production was obtained from within a few feet of the base of the Chattanooga black shale, probably in the upper Silurian. One well in Simpson County was drilled completely through the Silurian section before it was abandoned. Several wells were drilled in Logan, Todd and Christian Counties to test the Devonian where it is thinned by removal of the upper formations before deposition of the Chattanooga shale. None of these wells was successful but several other locations are now being tested. The Silurian thins in like manner on the eastern flank of the coal basin as the crest of the Cincinnati arch is approached, and it is along this thinning edge that such fields as the LeGrande, Logsdon Valley, Magnolia, Bowling Green and the Barren County pools were developed. A number of wells were drilled around these old pools in an effort to extend them, some of which were successful. The wells listed this year in Larue, Hardin, Barren, Hart and Warren Counties were drilled in the search for other such fields.

"While thiocyanate (SCN-) is used in a number of industrial processes (production of polyacrylonitrile filaments, synthesis of agricultural chemicals and certain metallurgical solvent extraction and flotation circuits) it is recognized more as an undesirable by-product associated with ' the metallurgical industry. Thiocyanate is present at low concentrations in some waste streams from the iron and steel industry. Of particular significance is the formation of thiocyanate during cyanidation of gold and silver ores, concentrates, tailing s and residues. The thiocyanate levels present in the resulting effluents may range from a few mg/I to several thousand mg/I.At present, thiocyanate does not appear to be as hazardous in the environment as cyanide (CN-) at the same concentration although its interaction with other species and resulting decomposition of products may be unacceptable. Of course the presence of thiocyanate in the leaching circuit and ultimately in the effluent streams may add considerably to the oxidative requirments of any non-selective treatment process for cyanidation wastes.With respect to the thiocyanate as it relates to the cyanidation process, two aspects are evident. Thiocyanate forms and persists in the cyanidation circuit resulting in a ""fouling"" condition with subsequent loss of leaching activity. In order to reduce or control this problem, it is common practice for some mills to discharge daily as much as 20% of the barren leach liquor. Besides contributing to fouling of the leach liquor the formation of thiocyanate represents an irreversible loss of reagent cyanide. It is noteworthy that in some present or proposed mill practice reagent cyanide loss through thiocyanate formation may reach 50%(1). The purpose of this paper is to discus s the application of controlled electrooxidation of thiocyanate with the view of suggesting a process for regenerating cyanide from waste thiocyanate(2). The paper describes the important theoretical aspects and presents experimental data obtained for thiocyanate electrooxidation using both small and large scale electrochemical reactors. Some economic conclusions are presented."

SEVERAL notable studies of the effects of sub- stitutional solutes have been reported. Outstanding among these for its elucidation of general principles, is the summarized work of Hume-Rothery and coworkers.1 For a systematic study of the effects of substitutional solutes on the mechanical properties of the solvent lattice, the work of Brick, Martin, and Angier² on copper; of Frye and coworkers³,4,5 on copper and silver; and of Lacy and Gensamer6 and of Austin7 on iron may be mentioned. Titanium is one of the few elements offering the possibility of a similar study of interstitial solutes since, unlike most metallic elements, it exhibits extended solid solubility for most of the interstitial solutes—hydrogen, boron, nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon. This paper reports a survey of the effects of dilute solutions of nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon on the mechanical properties of high-purity alpha titanium. Previous Work: Van Arkel and De Boer showed" that high purity titanium was quite ductile and De Boer, Burgers and Fast established".' that not only were oxygen and nitrogen very soluble in solid titanium but that, long before the limit of solid solubility of either had been reached, these interstitial solutes rendered the metal brittle. How often does one hear that a recent feasibility study was not a success? Alternatively, when scope of the feasibility study was sent out to tender there was a large discrepancy in tendered prices. If the tendered prices were to be compared to the consumer market, for instance the purchase of a car, where the concept is transport in a controlled and safe manner, prices vary by large factors, but then so do the specifications. In the case of a feasibility study, prices should be within a tighter margin as the tenderers are all quoting against the same concept and specification. Why do these discrepancies occur? Price discrepancies will in every likelihood be attributed to two main factors; one, the perceived amount of work and two, the ability of the bidder to carry the risk associated with the feasibility study. It is, therefore, important that the scoping of the feasibility study covers the detailed requirements as clearly as possible stating what level of accuracy is required. The feasibility study is one of the first activities in the life of a project. The study, like the project it is investigating, is subject to the constraints of time, cost and quality. Its primary objectives are to demonstrate the viability of a project within the outlined scope and constraints.

This paper covers the key issues such as orebody geometry and grade, geotechnical data and metallurgical response. These must be considered in selecting a mining system for a new orebody. It then focusses on the advantages of open pit mining over underground mining particularly in the areas of costs, speed of development and safety. Environmental issues with waste storage is the only negative which emerges. Consequently, the majority of new large mine developments continue to be open pits. It is also demonstrated that underground mining continues to play an important role, particulary for high-grade deposits at depth. The impact on ore recoveries of recent developments in stabilised fill technology in underground mining is also highlighted. The importance of economics to the decision on mining method is continually emphasised as maximising orebody value should be the prime objective of this Work.

Many attempts have been made to write a formula by which to calculate the strength of steel from its chemical composition, but most of these endeavors have failed because there were too many disturbing conditions. It is idle to collect from the pages of trade-papers, books, or the proceedings of scientific societies, a multitude of observations. The combination of such results will simply show that steel of the same composition will vary in tensile strength through wide limits—a fact that has been known for generations. That cold-working, overheating, and many another form of heat-treatment alter fundamentally the strength of steel, is ancient history, although it is only recently that the microscope has pointed out the road to an explanation of the phenomena. It mag be urged that the microscopic structure must betaken into consideration in any formula giving the ultimate strength, but from the standpoint of the present investigation this is unnecessary. We are trying to determine primarily, not what changes in ultimate strength may be made by variations in the condition of carbon, but what effect is produced by changes in the amount of carbon, when its condition remains constant. For such an inquiry, in order that the condition of the carbon should remain as nearly uniform as possible, it is essential that all testrpieces be made under the same conditions; and it is believed that the tests described in this paper satisfy that requirement. "The smelter is described by area; feed preparation, continuous furnace line, gas handling and auxiliary systems, blister refining, Hazelett casting of thin anodes, and scrap remelting. Early smelter campaign data is presented and compared to design. Some modifications to the basic design of the furnaces and gas trains are indicated, with their respective impacts on improving smelter performance.Plant compactness, the use of jumbo tanks, and a highly automated electrode handling system are featured in the refinery description, with brief coverage of the liberator and slimes leaching sections. Alcoa of Australia's Western Australian bauxite mining operations in the Darling Ranges, southeast of Perth, present major challenges in the control of air blast. The close proximity of rural communities and the face profile make the traditional methods of air blast control difficult.An extensive blast noise monitoring programme has been established. The development of a computerised blast noise prediction model and the establishment of a radiosonde weather balloon facility have reduced blast induced complaints by a factor of ten.The meteorological factors affecting blast noise transmission are discussed and examples are given of adverse weather conditions for the southwest region of Western Australia.

This is a story of progress through research, invention and innovation-progress that made a small mine in Missouri into a large and prosperous corporation. The St. Joseph Lead Co. was founded in Borne Terre, Missouri, in 1864. At that time, the mine consisted of a narrow trench eight feet deep; the mill was a hand-operated jig; and the smelter, a charcoal oven with a sloping hearth. During the first year, production was suspended for two months because of an invasion by the Confederate army. There have been few interruptions since that time.

Downhill, or regenerative conveyors have always been a challenge to the design engineer due to their natural instability under load. The last decade has seen the appearance of high tonnage, high negative lift conveyors with several hundred meters of drop. These conveyors have made necessary the development of new braking systems and intelligent drive controls to address their starting and stopping requirements under various load conditions. This paper describes the critical design criteria of large regenerative conveyors and some of the advances in mechanical braking systems and drive control technology developed by Conveyor Dynamics, Inc. (CDI) to address their specific requirements.

Exploration for uranium in Australia commenced only during the 1940s, but in this short period has been very successful as one third of the world's low cost uranium reserves have been discovered in Australia. Total uranium exploration expenditure in Australia up to the end of 1983 was $A(1983) 554 million; this discovered 20 potentially economic deposits and official reserves of 560 000 tonnes of uranium oxide at an average cost of $1 per kg of U 0 . An exponential 8 eserves indicates distribution of uranium r that there could be 54 undiscovered uranium deposits in Australia, each with reserves of 20 000 tonnes U308 or more, in addition to smaller deposits. Using a constant uranium price of $A(1983) 79 per kg, no deposit is economic at a grade below 0.12 per cent U 08 or with reserves of less than 3 000 tonnes. Selecting deposits with reserves of 5 000 tonnes U 0g or more as prime exploration targets, only 39 per cent of discoveries will yield a real internal rate of return (IRR) of 10 per cent or more. After committing a minimum exploration budget of $10 million to this search, an explorer has one chance between 7 and 12 of discovering a deposit that will repay the exploration investment.

This paper describes a method of reversal control of the open-hearth furnace that obtains in practice those effects considered below as essential to a completely automatic control, without appreciable interference with the natural rise and fall in temperature of the regenerative portions of the furnace system. Growing out of some studies of radiation pyrometry in open-hearth regenerators, it was developed during 1934-1938, and has been successfully applied to a number of commercial furnaces. The goal of open-hearth furnace operation is the highest rate of production of steel of proper quality consistent with good refractory life and fuel economy. This requires rapid heat transfer from furnace to charge, which in turn is dependent upon heating the furnace refractories to the highest safe operating temperature. The greater the heat input to the melting chamber, the sooner this limiting temperature will be reached, so that control methods in general that are designed to protect against overheating of refractories should help to maintain maximum fuel input and production rate. For the typical open-hearth system, with fixed regenerator capacity and with rate of fuel input usually restricted in its range of variation, our basic assumption is the idea that the only other important variable —that is, the time interval between successive reversals—should also be held constant or within a small range. The present reversal control was designed therefore so that, under normal operating conditions, no arbitrary limitation is imposed other than to keep the reversal interval within the optimum time range. However, since a near approach to completely automatic operation involves protection of refractories through the balancing of furnace end temperatures as well as emergency protection against temperature peaks above some upper limit, it was also felt essential to employ, as an integral part of the control unit, a temperature-measuring instrument to register the true temperature of the refractory surfaces at some critical region in the hot ends of the regenerative zones. As the basic elements of the control, we thus have one "maximum" and one lLminimum" time relay and a potentiometer recorder-controller, combined with switches and relays to operate as follows: I. Reversal normally occurs within an optimum range limited by the maximum and minimum settings to about 4 to 6 min. variation, but the actual interval usually is less variable and closer to the minimum setting. 2. The margin between minimum and maximum time is utilized, together with a "floating temperature limit" in the potenti-ometric control instrument, to correct any tendency toward temperature unbalance between ends of the furnace. 3. During the past 18 months a rock mechanics project has been in operation at Renison Limited. The project was established to identify and investigate key problem areas that would affect future production at the Renison mine. An in-house approach was adopted, using shall compact equignent, to investigate ground behaviour. Information on the rock stress field was considered to be particularly important for an understanding of ground behaviour. A high horizontal stress component exists, which enables large flat dipping spans of hanging wall to be opened up, with support being provided by post pillars. The amount of support provided by these post pillars has been found to be low.

"The aim of this research work was to produce biodiesel (fatty acid methyl esters, FAME) from canola oil using KOH loaded on y-Al203 support as a heterogeneous catalyst. Different parameters such as effects of the molar ratio of methanol to oil, catalyst amount and reaction time on the yield were investigated. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used for characterization of the catalysts. A biodiesel yield of 86.67% was obtained under catalyst preparation and transesterification conditions of calcinations temperature of 773 K, 4 h of reaction time at 338 K, and using 3.5 wt% catalysts and molar ratio of methanol/oil of 15:1. The leaching of potassium species in the spent catalyst was observed.1. IntroductionBiodiesel is an eco-friendly and alternative energy source for diesel engines that can be synthesized by transesterfication of vegetable oil or animal fat with alcohols [1 ]. There are four principal approaches to the synthesis of biodiesel involving the transesterification of the triglycerides of the plant oils and animal fats: base catalysis [2], acid catalysis [3-5], employing supercritical alcohol conditions [6] and enzyme catalysis [7]. The commonly used homogeneous catalysts are NaOH, KOH and their alkoxides. Homogeneous alkali-catalyzed transesterification is much faster than acidcatalyzed transesterfication [8]. However, a large amount of water is required to transfer the catalysts from the organic phase to a water phase after the reaction. Therefore, it is considerably more costly to separate the catalyst from the produced solution [9]. These disadvantages could be removed by use of a heterogeneous catalyst [10]. The use of heterogeneous catalysts eliminates the neutralization step, hence it results much easier to separate from liquid products. Also, they can be designed to give a higher activity and selectivity and to have longer catalyst lifetimes [11]. A large number of different heterogeneous catalysts have been synthesized for biodiesel production. For example, calcined Mg-Al hydrotalcites [12], zeolite and metal catalysts [13], metal oxides such as calcium oxide (CaO) [14], magnesium oxide (MgO) [15], zirconium oxide (Zr02) [16], and supported catalysts [17] have been investigated as heterogeneous catalysts. CaO and MgO are most frequently used heterogeneous catalysts for biodiesel production [18]. In this present work, we aimed at developing an efficient catalyst for transesterification of canola oil. We have prepared KOH/ Al203 by impregnation and applied to determine the optimum conditions for biodiesel production. Three different variables including reaction time , alcohol to oil molar ratio and catalyst loading with may influence the quality of the produced biodiesel were optimized. Moreover, SEM (scan electron microscope), XRD (X-ray diffraction) and XRF were used for characterization of the catalysts."

A continued exploration programme has further defined the geology of the Tolukuma vein system, verified the resource indicated by Newmont, and identified potential for additional mineralisation. The resource at Tolukuma Hill, designated as zone C, is a mine recoverable 432,000 t at 18.1 g/t Au & 46 g/t Ag. Mining will be by a combination of open pit and underground at a rate of 100,000 t per annum. Processing will be by SAG mill, gravity circuit and CIL plant. A diatreme breccia, localised at an intersection of structures and a relationship of gold to base metal sulphides, are indicative of a strong porphyry association. Typical epithermal features such as crustiform banded quartz and quartz pseudomorphing platy calcite are also present and locally contain lesser gold mineralisation. Pre-existing dilatant structures have acted as a host to the ore fluids, resulting in the formation of the semi-continuous Tolukuma-Gulbadi veins over a 1100 in strike. A fluid flow model suggests that mineralizing fluids were sourced from a diatreme margin and migrated laterally along dilatant structures. Bonanza gold grades are interpreted to be derived through fluid quenching in the flexure between a hanging wall split, which hosts much of the Tolukuma Hill resource, and the feeder graben structure. Thus, the relationship between the pre-mineral structural geometry and fluid upflow at the margins of a diatreme breccia, controls the ore setting.
