Magnetic separation occupies an attractive position in the field of ore beneficiation. It is a simple yet effective method, used for some 150 years and steadily growing more important. This type of beneficiation orginated in 1792, when William Fullarton was issued a British patent covering the separation of iron ore by magnetic attraction. What is magnetism, and why are some materials capable of being magnetized and others not? The study involves many unknowns, and even a partial answer to these questions would be a dissertation in solid state physics and perhaps other fields of science. But the last two decades have revealed basic facts as to why certain materials are magnetic and what happens to them when they are magnetized.

"The Granisle and Bell Copper mines were officially put into production in 1966 and 1972, respectively. The Granisle Mine was purchased in late 1979by Noranda and the two operations were amalgamated as one division. Both mines were closed in 1982after sustaining heavy financial losses during a period of low copper prices beginning in 1981.This paper describes the resumption of operations at the Bell Mine in 1985 after its shutdown period of three years and the dramatic and sustained improvements in productivity and efficiency realized as a result of a commitment by employees and management to the application of Participative Management and Employee Involvement principles. After a general description of the effects of such a philosophy on the operation as a whole, and a comparison to the operation's last full year as a producer, it deals with the practice of this philosophy in the maintenance department at the Bell Mine and the superb results realized.IntroductionThe Bell Copper deposit was discovered in 1963 and came onstream as a 10000 ton s per day open pit mine in the fall of 1972. Identified reserves at that time were 46 million tons of ore containing 0.50% copper. The mine shared facilities of the townsite of Granisle with the nearby Zapata-Granby mine which had established the community six years earlier.Because of easy grinding ore and improvements to milling circuits, Bell's throughput rate was increased to 17 000 tons per day by the late 1970s. In the open pit, improvements resulted in mining of additional reserves with higher stripping ratios. At startup, a half ton o f waste was mined for every ton of ore processed.By the end of 1982, with 48.2 million tons already mined, the Bell Mine had identified additional mineable reserves of 39.4 million tons containing 0.52% Cu.In November 1979 the Granisle Mine was purchased from Zapata-Granby. The two mines, with a total of 700 employees, were operated under common management as the Babine Division until 1982 when low copper price s forced the closure of both for an indefinite period.The outlook for copper prices remained bleak and only 50 people were retained on the payroll to maintain the two plants, most of them working on a part-time schedule.The population of the Village of Granisle dwindled from over 1500 inhabitants to under 500, as people moved away to seek other employment.Prior to the shutdown, the Bell Mine employed 370 people and pit extraction averaged nearly 50000 tons per day of which 16000 tons was mill feed, and the remainder waste. Total cost to produce a pound of copper was C$1.36 in 1982."

SEVERAL very interesting articles have been written on the caving system of mining, but most of these papers have dealt separately with the slusher system or the chute and grizzly system. In this paper, a comparison will be made of the two methods, both of which are being used at the Climax mine. The mine is on the Continental Divide, in central Colorado, at an altitude of approximately 11,500 ft. above sea level. The long, cold winters, characteristic of the high Rockies, create a number of operating problems not usually found in other mining areas. THE ORE BODY The Climax ore body is just east of the Mosquito fault. This structural deformation has brought the granite on the east against the sedimentary rocks on the west. The ore occurs in an intensely altered granite and schist around a silicified granite core. The ore is in a highly fractured zone of moderate silicification. The principal mineral, molybdenite, is found in these fractures. Barren dikes of granite porphyry cut through the ore body and core with no apparent regularity. The grade of the ore is fairly uniform and gradually decreases toward the footwall core and also into the hanging-wall granite. The footwall and hanging wall are determined entirely by assays. The ore body is roughly dome-shaped, with the apex truncated at the surface. It is covered to varying depths with talus. A horizontal section of the ore body on the Phillipson level appears as an annular ellipse surrounding the footwall core. The ring of ore varies in width from 300 ft. to as much as 800 ft. The north-south axis of the core is about 1200 ft. and the east-west axis is about 1800 ft. In the ore zone, the rock is sufficiently strong to maintain reasonably large openings, and openings larger than haulage drifts usually have to be supported. The ore is cut by a great many fractures and shears and breaks into rather large blocks when caved, necessitating considerable secondary blasting. The waste that overlies the ore body breaks relatively fine in comparison with the size of the blocks of the caved ore and tends to run through the broken ore in the cave, causing dilution unless the draw is carefully controlled. MINING SYSTEMS For several years the ore was mined by the chute and grizzly system, a system that differs from that used in other caving mines only in the size of openings and equipment. The aspect of sustainability of ferroalloy processes has long been a serious matter for consideration in many of the world?s industrialized countries. A number of countries can be named where ferroalloy plants that were once flourishing, have all but disappeared. One of the most important factors playing a role in this type of occurrence is the cost and availability of quality raw materials. Given that all natural resources will be depleted with time, users are compelled to develop new processes that are sustainable in the changing environment. The DC arc smelting furnace is one such process that has proved itself, and has gained increasing popularity over the past two decades. This process, amongst other benefits, directly addresses the use of more readily available and more affordable raw materials in ferroalloy production. Since early in the new millennium, GLPS has been involved in various studies for different clients of furnaces for the production of ferroalloys. Two of these recent studies have culminated in the design, construction and commissioning of DC arc furnaces for the production of ferrochrome. One of these furnaces is a 10 MW unit at Mogale Alloys, and the other a 60 MW unit at the Middelburg plant of Samancor Chrome. This paper discusses the approach taken in the design and construction of these two furnaces, which, although varying significantly in size and capacity, are very similar in many other aspects of their design. THe Pocahontas district occupies the extreme southern end of West Virginia, principally McDowell, Mercer and Wyoming counties, and a part of Tazewell county, in southwestern Virginia. The first record of the coal field is a report by Prof. J. P. Lesley, of Pennsylvania, about 1880, in which he mentions a coal opening at the upper end of Abbs Valley, Tazewell county, Va. C. R. Boyd, a mining engineer of Wytheville, Va., published a series of articles in 1881, mentioning coal on Indian Creek, Tazewell county, and on Horse Pen creek, which coals, he stated, extended toward the Ohio River. He also mentions the Abbs Valley coal reported by Lesley. In 1881, F. J. Kimball (who became president of the Norfolk & Western R. R. in 1883)) after examining the Scott mine in Abbs Valley, went northward across Abbs Valley Mountain to the place now known as Pocahontas, where he located what has since been called No. 3 vein of Pocahontas coal. In November, 1882, Jed Hotchkiss and others prepared a cross-section of the Flat Top Mountain coal measures, some notes on which were published by Mr. Hotchkiss, between 1880 and 1892, under the title of " The Virginias.' In May, 1881, the Norfolk & Western R. R. was organized through the purchase of the Atlantic, Mississippi & Ohio R. R., an old line running from Norfolk, Va., to Bristol, Tenn., with branches from Petersburg to City Point and from Glade Springs to Saltville. At that time, charters had been granted for three railroads tributary to the New River Valley, but their proposed routes would indicate that the promoters were concerned with minerals, timber, and a connection with the Chesapeake & Ohio R. R., rather than the development of any coal in the Pocahontas district. One of them was projected to extend up Bluestone River a short distance, but not far enough to reach the coal in the Bluestone Valley, and a little grading was done for a narrow-gage road between New River Station and a point in Giles county, Virginia, near the West Virginia line. All charters and railroads in this district were acquired by the Norfolk & Western R.R.

SUBSTANTIAL deposits of Bessemer hematite have been found recently by drilling beneath Steep Rock Lake, Ontario, which is situated in the northern part of the Lake Superior Region. It will be practicable to divert the waters flowing into this lake and develop open pits on the upper part of two large ore bodies by damming off and pumping out the water in the part of the lake in which they occur. Ultimately, the bulk of the ore will be mined by underground methods. Owing to the generally massive nature of the rocks in the area, no underground flows of major consequence are anticipated after diversion of the lake. The Steep Rock deposits are attributed in origin to hydrothermal replacement. They were formed, for the most part, along an unconformable, brecciated contact between the Steep Rock limestone and an overlying younger volcanic series. The replacing solutions came in as igneous after-effects, following upon the intrusion of basic igneous rocks that invaded the hanging-wall volcanics. It is believed that this took place in a geological period roughly equivalent to late Middle Huronian, which was the period when the most extensive iron-bearing rocks of the Lake Superior Region were formed. Comparison is made with other deep-seated iron-ore bodies in the Lake Superior Region, the origins of which are ascribed in the discussion to hydrothermal replacement.

"Effective January 1, 1990, mines in British Columbia are subject to a new provincial mining tax statute, the Mineral Tax Act. Under this Act, mines are subject to a two-tier tax system, with a minimum tax payable on ""net current proceeds"" and a higher tax paid on net income. For many mines, the present value of tax paid under the new rules should be comparable to the amount paid under the old rules. Earlier cash payments could pose difficulties, particularly for smaller mines, but existing producing mines could benefit in the short-term.IntroductionEffective January 1, 1990, British Columbia has replaced the provincial mining tax regime under the Mineral Resources Tax Act with a new system under the Mineral Tax Act. The new rules borrow some ideas from other provinces (New Brunswick's two-tier concept, and Saskatchewan's indexed costs) with a view to levying a tax that is fairer to both the producer and the province."

Throughout 1928, production of oil from Venezuela steadily increased, and at the close of the year, the output was at the rate of nearly 400,000 bbl. a day. The total for the year was approximately 106,500,000 bbl., representing an increase of about 66 per cent. over the 63,000,000 bbl. produced in 1927. Venezuela now stands next to the United States as the second largest oil-producing country in the world; and there is abundant evidence to suggest that this relationship will endure for a number of years. Reserves were notably increased in the Lake shore fields, and the potential output of the Maracaibo Basin is much greater than the current production. In spite of this, the percentage of production increase was comparatively moderate, and the rate of this increase continued to fall off slightly, as has been the case for the last three years. This does not suggest that further annual increases in Venezuelan output will not materialize; only that the rate of these increases appears to be on the decline, and that with every succeeding year the future tendency will be in the direction of a stabilized level of output. The following table shows the production trend of the country since 1925: 1925 increase over 1924, 132 per cent. 1926 increase over 1925, 80 per cent. 1927 increase over 1926, 75 per cent. 1928 increase over 1927, 66 per cent. Many factors will work to prevent a reversal of this trend, but the principal ones are strong ownership in large-acreage units, and the probable indisposition of the world market to absorb a more rapidly increasing Venezuelan output at prices profitable to the producers. The distress oil element is not a factor in Venezuela; also, any unforeseen jump, such as results in the United States from the discovery of a Seminole or a deep sand at Long Beach, or Santa Fe Springs, is impossible in Venezuela, on account of lack of means for transporting a sudden surplus of oil, and the slowness with which additional transportation equipment in the form of shallow-draft tankers can be obtained.

The paper presents the results of a series of pull out tests performed on roof reinforcement systems currently being adopted in mines in Australia 7mm wire, dividag bar, 15.2mm strand cable, and birdcage cable. The study also investigated the load deformation chara- cteristics and the various design parameters controlling the effectiveness of a cable-grout system. Suggestions for continued work are Highlighted.

Two magnetic parameters are proposed as a basis for the assessment of ironsands beneficiation. The parameters are deter- mined for raw sand prior to dredging and for magnetic separator head feed over a production period of five months. The relationships between these parameters and the performance of the magnetic separators are examined to establish the value of magnetic assessment compared with the traditional soluble iron assay method. The results illustrate that the first parameter, true magnetic fraction (TMF), has a value superior to that of soluble iron when relating raw sand grade calculated by tri- angulation to magnet performance. In terms of the relationship between magnet head feed grade and magnet performance, TMF and soluble iron perform equally as assessment parameters. For the ironsands mined during the five month period, the second magnetic assessment parameter, composite fraction (CR), is shown to merely reflect TMF and offers no additional information for assess- Ment. Conclusions are that true magnetic fraction has many advantages over soluble iron in terms of time and cost of determination and that it is a meaningful and reliable parameter upon which to base all calculations relating to the mining and beneficiation of ironsands.

With continually increasing energy prices, the mining industry has been on the search for new energy optimization technologies. One area that is garnering great interest is Ventilation-On-Demand (VOD). Prior to selection and implementation of a VOD solution, it is important to fully understand the mine requirements as well as its existing infrastructure and the interaction with other automation in place at the site. With this information, a business case can be generated including a cost versus benefit comparison for various control strategies. To assist in the development of the business case, this paper will identify key areas for consideration and recommendations for an implementation plan.

Sandstone paleo-channels encountered during coal mining operation can significantly slow down the advance in mining, and often completely shut-down coal mine production, with consequent extensive economic losses to the mine operator. Definition of the encountered channel usually involves intensive drilling; vertically from the surface and/or horizontally from underground vantage points. Coal operators with limited resources often resort to exploration by extending mine faces toward the channel. Both drilling and underground mining exploration are prohibitively expensive and usually provide only partial information about the location, size and shape of the sandstone channel. A low cost alternative which can also provide a more comprehensive picture of the channel is the application of Underground High Resolution Seismic Methods (UHRSM) developed and successfully tested by GECOH Exploration. UHRSM applies surface seismic reflection technology rotated as needed (usually 90 degrees) to accommodate the faces of the exposed channel, coal rib, or coal in front of the inclusion (sandstone channel, etc.). This entails placing high frequency seismic sources and geophones horizontally across these exposed faces. Refraction and reflection events from the front and back of the channel are isolated, analyzed and inverted, to calculate the channel's location and geometry. This paper presents a summary of the geophysical exploration technique and two case history examples where it was applied. In the first case, the accuracy of the technique was verified through subsequent mining. Mining is yet to commence in the second case. Both cases were applied to room-and-pillar nines where the irregular rib lines significantly extended the data processing effort. This suggests that UHRSM will find the easiest application when used along straight rib lines, but that is not a requisite to the application. The UHRSM should find ready application in longwall mining to delineate sandstone channels and other non-coal inclusions in the middle of the panels or ahead of the gate road faces.

The structural competence of mesh- and fibre-reinforced shotcrete was investigated in two series of tests on full-scale panels. It was found that uniformly distributed loading was marginally less demanding than point loading, mesh reinforcement was superior to fibre reinforcement, Dramix fibre and Melt Extract fibre were similar in reinforcing characteristics, and 30 mm to 35 mm was an optimum fibre length. Furthermore, the consistency of the fibre content could not be assured on practical mining sites, and an average fibre content of about 1,5 per cent was the maximum that could be obtained for fibre lengths not exceeding 35 mm. Also, owing to its greater flexibility, shotcrete reinforced with diamond mesh was preferable to fibre-reinforced shotcrete in mining excavations subject to squeezing conditions. In view of the difficulties associated with assuring the consistency of the fibre content in mining applications, it appears that the sophisticated attributes of fibre-reinforced shotcrete can be effectively exploited only in civil-engineering applications in which quality assurance is subject to explicit contractual control. Load-deflection curves, together with measurements of compressive stresses in the surfaces of some of the panels, enabled the ultimate flexural strength of reinforced shotcrete to be rigorously formulated, and rigorous design procedures for shotcrete subject to bending and direct thrust to be developed. The application of the procedures is demonstrated in a practical design case in which the moments and thrusts in a tunnel lining are determined in a numerical analysis of the interaction between the lining, the surrounding rock, and the rock-reinforcing system.

Ore textures in base metal deposits are an important factor in the liberation of the economic components of the ore, metal recovery and reagent consumption during beneficiation. Optimising the mine profit requires knowing the relationship between ore texture and mineral processing behaviour, and the ability to predict the metal grade and the ore texture at a suitable scale. A new method that generates distributions of mesotextures for any mining block size or shape is proposed and includes: I . establishing a protocol for acquiring mesotexture data: 2. measuring the mesotexture spatial correlations using a multi-texture variogram; 3. generating multiple simulations of mesotextures; and 4. upscaling the simulations to generate the expected mining block/stope mesotexture distributions. Models of the ore textures built using the proposed methodology can be used to assess resources and reserves, enhance ore/waste discrimination and predict the metallurgical behaviour of parcels of ore.

For several years Hatch has been installing fibre optic temperature sensors on the copper cooling elements of smelting furnaces to improve monitoring capabilities in critical locations. The metal/matte tapblock is a key area to monitor in the furnace as it undergoes severe wear from the molten material repeatedly drained through it. The high wear rate around the tapblock means downtime is necessary to perform refractory repairs. A good understanding of the tapblock condition allows the operation to maximize safety and production; consequently the metal/matte tapblocks have been the focus of this study. Fibre optic technology allows the installation of numerous sensors in locations that are very sensitive to refractory thickness, thereby providing information previously unavailable with traditional measurements. The transient nature of the thermal response to tapping and the three-dimensional geometry of the tapblock confound the interpretation of refractory thickness from temperature measurements. This paper focuses on the analysis of both plant data and thermal modelling simulations and details the progress made in relating the temperature measurements to the refractory thickness in front of the copper tapblock.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant is a deep underground facility mined in bedded salt interspersed with persistent clay inter- beds. The clay seams delineate beams of salt above and below the excavations which strongly influence excavation performance. This paper reviews available rock mechanics information relevant to improving drift stability by removing the roof beam. Conceptual deformation mechanisms, relevant field data, and numerical analyses were used to investigate the effects of mining the roof of the excavations along a clay seam. Finally, a case study that applies the results of this investigation is presented.

For more than 100 years, the Republic of Chile has been one of the leading copper-producing countries of the world. Between 1877 and 1880 Chile accounted for over 50 pet of total world copper production. Today it has the world's largest known reserves of copper ore and a capability of producing over 600,000 tons per year. This capacity can and will be increased as the world demand for copper grows steadily during the remaining years of this century. The Potrerillos mine of Andes Copper Mining Co., a subsidiary of The Anaconda Co., was developed in the rugged, high Cordilleras in the early 1920's, and the townsite, concentrator, leaching plants, smelter, railroad, power and port facilities were completed so that it came into full production in 1927. Since then and until the closing o f the mine in June of last year, 1,762,192 tons o f copper were produced.

Thin foils made from the gold-rich region of- short (0.15 mm)Au-Ag diffusion couples annealed at 880°C for 1 hr were examined in ax electron microscope and the structures were compared with that of pure gold subjected to identical heat treatments. The couples underwent Plastic deformation (bending) during the diffusional anneal. The foils prepared from the diffusion zone have a higher dislocation density and incidence of subboundaries than pure gold. The plastic bending of the couple can be interpreted in terms of the climb of edge dislocations, which are pavallel to the bend axis, along the direction of diffusion. THE interaction of lattice defects during interdiffu-sion between two metals has been considered by several investigators. In particular, da Silva and Mehl,1 Barnes,' and Bardeen and Herring3 have proposed models based on interactions between point and line defects to account for the Kirkendall effect (marker movement). Each of these models is based on dislocation climb, which can either add or remove lattice planes, induced by an under- or supersaturation of vacancies. A theoretical treatment of the nucleation and growth of voids by the condensation of vacancies has been presented by Seitz.4 Stresses can arise in a binary diffusion couple as a result of the vacancy flux and the gradient in the lattice parameter. rinkmman' has investigated the effects of diffusion-induced stresses on void formation; the results of his analysis suggest that voids can form and grow under the influence of these stresses in the absence of an excess vacancy concentration. The relationships between vacancy supersaturation and diffusion-induced stresses and void formation have been elucidated also by Balluffi and seigle6 who concluded that the stress generated by a vacancy supersaturation aids the growth of voids. Experimental evidence which indirectly shows that stresses are produced by chemical diffusion has been obtained by several researchers.2,7-9 This evidence consists in part of the observation by light microscopy of the formation of subgrains, a process characteristic of the high-temperature deformation of some metals during creep.'0 More striking, however, is the plastic bending of short (0.2 mm) Cu-Ni couples observed by Barnes2 and of boron-doped silicon crystals reported by Queisser.9 Diffusion-induced dislocations in iron and silicon have been investigated by Ainslie et a1.11and Schwutte and Queisser,12 respectively, the former using transmission electron microscopy and the latter an X-ray transmission technique. Matthews and Crawford13 observed the formation of boundaries by the climb of interfacial misfit dislocations in thin, vapor-deposited Au-Pd couples diffused in situ in an electron microscope. In order to obtain additional information on the phenomena associated with defect interaction and diffusion-induced stresses in binary couples, an electron transmission study of foils prepared from the diffusion zone of short Au-Ag couples was undertaken. The initial objective was to investigate the processes occurring at various points of the diffusion zone. Subsequent research demonstrated that foils could be prepared only from the gold-rich region of the diffusion zone using the technique described herein. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Preparation and Annealing of the Diffusion Couples. The couples were made from annealed, high-purity (99.999 pct). polycrvstalline gold and silver sheets (0.075 mm thick). Shall (0.075 by 5 by 17 mm) elec-tropolished coupons of gold and silver were pressure-bonded by heating the two metals in a graphite device to 770°C and holding at this temperature for approximately 30 min. This paper presents analytical assessments around unintended misfire detonation, within rock debris drilling and bench top cleaning, primarily in the quarrying and mining industry. The main purpose of the work has been to see which operation has the lowest fatal accident probability. To be able to do this a risk analysis model is developed and the basics of the model are described first in the paper. Further a practical approach of the model use is presented. This includes a summary of general fatal injury statistical data, which is used to establish input parameters in the model. The result of the work shows that the rock debris drilling operation has at least half the probability of fatal injury compared to bench top cleaning. The result of the work should bring along rewriting of the Norwegian explosives regulation. The statistical data also shows that the blasting industry generally has a high fatal injury rate compared to other industries and basic risk reference levels. Risk reduction efforts concerning the examined operations are described.

The ores of the Golden Mile exhibit considerable complexity. As a consequence, the operating company, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM), considered it important to develop a coherent database of information describing the nature of the many ore lodes in terms of (1) rock properties and mineralogical content, including relative proportions, grain size, associations and deportment of key elements between minerals, (2) the relative behaviour of consituent minerals in various stages of processing and (3) the nature of the final products and key intermediate streams. The paper describes a sequence of metallurgical tests covering comminution, flotation, gravity concentration, leaching and calcining, carried out on three lodes of the Golden Mile. Key samples generated by the testing were subjected to comprehensive size-by-elemental assaying and QEM*SEM mineralogical determinations of sulphide and precious metal associations. Significant differences between lodes were identified, and the impact of these differences on processing is discussed.
