I DESIRE to say that, owing to the number of papers which have been more or less crowded at this session of the Institute, and the fact that, as one of the Local Committee, I have the distinguished honor to feel somewhat like one of the hosts, I should not tax the patience of members at this late hour, but would have my paper read by title were it in any way possible to do this. But the task I have set myself this evening is to present to the eyes of the members of the Institute certain objects which have occupied more or less of my time during the last eighteen months or two years. The objects I allude to are some of the igneous rocks of this country, which, until quite recently, have been less understood than any others. It will be well known to some of the members that some of the cooled lavas of a previous age of our planet, when not directly coarsely crystalline and granular, were considered and spoken of as " natural glasses," or perfectly uncrystalline, vitreous, or hyaline masses of matter. Among the first results of the use of the microscope was the dispersion of this fallacy. Sir David Brewster, Mr. H. C. Sorby, and William Nichol (the discoverer of the celebrated calcite prism, which bears his name), had, with greater or less success, examined sections of various rocks and minerals, both by transmitted and reflected light, and also in the form of powder. But, until the genius of Vogelsang undertook the subject, these investigations had no permanent value, nor did they constitute an independent line of mineralogical and geological research. Since the close of his labors, by Vogelsang's premature and much-lamented death, the subject has been made one of renewed interest by his brother-in-law, Ferdinand Zirkel, as well as by Rosenbusch, Tschermak, and many others abroad, and at home by the commencement of a systematic study of the traps of Connecticut by Messrs. E. D. Dana and G. W. Hawes, of New Haven, and by the splendid set of described sections of the traps of the West which have been furnished by Zirkel to illustrate Clarence King's report. I had the honor of presenting a large number of thin sections of our traps at the Washington meeting, for the inspection of the members, with the aid of a table microscope belonging to the Smithsonian Institution. The MANUFACTURE of Iron in the PROVINCE of Quebec. The St. Maurice Forges.—The deposits of iron-ore in the St. Maurice district, in the rear of Three Rivers, were probably known to the Indians and .Jesuits, but it is not till 1667 that any discovery is reported. The affairs of the colony were then in the control of the " West India Company," who amongst other monopolies had a right to all mines and minerals." Specimens of the iron-ore were examined in Quebec. in 1668 by the Sieur la Potardière, who reported unfavorably on them. In 1671, Louis de Buade, Comte de Frontenac, was appointed governor of La Nouvelle France ; and in the original manuscripts relating to his administration some allusion is occasionally found to the St. Maurice iron mines.? In a letter to the Imperial Government, dated 2d November, 1672, he says: "The iron mine of which I have already spoken is of great consequence. I have visited it myself, in order that I may be enabled to give a more accurate account of its nature. Since the very beginning of Polish copper mining, special consideration of sink shaft techniques through highly saturated Cenozoic rocks was required. Shaft freezing has been chosen as a method to consolidate these rocks. Due to the rock mass structure and water inflow potential, shaft sinking without freezing was considered dangerous. In the course of time, rock mass freezing technology and experience were evolved and this technology became safer and more reliable. New techniques appeared not only in the technical method of freezing, but also in the matter of designing. Computer aided techniques allow engineers to make a detailed analysis and view of freeze wall development. Nevertheless it is important to determine basic thermal rock properties. In this paper, the evolution of knowledge and engineering experience taken in Polish copper mines and current knowledge level in that matter were shown.

IN January, 1939, Dome Mines, Limited, purchased a few bars of an alloy drill-steel for the purpose of testing its fatigue resisting qualities as compared with those of a straight carbon-steel then in general use at the mine. A steel of the following analysis was selected: Carbon 1.00% Sulphur 0.022 Chromium 1.26 Silicon 0.17% Phosphorus 0.028 Vanadium 0.1 Manganese 0.32% Molybdenum 0.30 This steel has a tensile strength of 180,000 lb. per square inch and a Brinell hardness of 380, as compared with a tensile strength of 114,000 lb. per square inch and a Brinell hardness of 230 for the standard carbon drill steels, in the as rolled' condition. The result of this test showed that about five times as many runs could be obtained from the alloy steel before failure from fatigue. It was therefore decided to replace gradually the one-inch quarter-octagon carbon steel, then in use, with seven-eighths quarter-octagon alloy steel. In January, 1940, six machines was placed on the seven-eighths steel and this was gradually increased until now (March 15th, 1941) fifty per cent of the steel being used is alloy steel. An O'Donovan furnace is used at the Dome for heat-treating their carbon drill-steel. In this furnace, a magnet withdraws the steel when the critical temperature has been reached, and the operator then places the steel in the quenching tank. Not being able to use this furnace for the alloy steel, the management felt that some means should be developed to determine the quenching temperature without depending upon the operator's judgment of the correct 'colour'. With the assistance of the Canadian General Electric Company, a radiation-type vacuum thermocouple pyrometer was adapted to this purpose, with excellent results; in fact, with this instrument no previous experience in hardening is necessary and results are remarkably uniform.

"This paper discusses a method to build a calibrated comminution circuit model, using historic operating data and blend information that is useful for forecasting and optimising plant performance, as well as evaluating expansion opportunities. A preferred method for building a calibrated power-based comminution model is discussed and justified based on two case studies, offering low-cost and effective strategies to utilise existing information for the maximum possible benefit.The first example is the Lefa Gold Mine located in Guinea, West Africa operating a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball milling circuit with recycle crushing (SABC). Daily blend information and operating data was utilised to build and calibrate a power-based model of the comminution circuit. The least squares regression method was used to solve the SAG mill specific energy requirement and the operating work index (Wio) for each individual ore type. The calibrated model was used to evaluate expansion strategies to sustain throughput at higher proportions of fresh ore based on the proposed life-of-mine schedule.The second example is the Ok Tedi Copper-Gold Mine in Papua New Guinea operating a SAG and ball milling circuit (SAB). The circuit limitation would often shift between the SAG mill and the ball mill due to variable ore characteristics and feed blend. Typical SAG mill relief strategies, such as recycle crushing or secondary crushing, required significant capital expenditure and the potential throughput benefit would vary depending on ore type, making economic justification difficult. Daily blend information and operating data was used to build and calibrate a power-based model of the comminution circuit to identify ore types that might benefit from higher blast intensities to increase fines content, thus relieving the SAG mill limitation and increasing overall throughput without a major capital investment.Citation:Zawadski, A L and Putland, B G, 2016. "The project’s goal was to construct the Al Ghazala Intercontinental, a multi-use development in the bay area of Tripoli overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The site of the project is located approximately 500 ft (150 m) from the Mediterranean coast, near the Al Ghazala roundabout in the town center of Tripoli, Libya. The investor of the project was Magna Properties Group, Ltd. – Libya, the main contractor was Man Enterprise S.A.L., and the design and construction management was performed by Dar Al-Handasah Engineering. Trevi S.p.A. was contracted to perform the design and construction of the anchored diaphragm walls and dewatering systems for the excavation of a two-level basement car park, which extends across the full footprint of the site.The site was approximately 640 ft by 230 ft (195 m by 70 m) in plan and nearly flat. The groundwater level typically varies from about 11 ft to 23 ft (3.4 m to 7.0 m) above mean sea level. To construct the required raft foundation, it was necessary to excavate the area down to El. -15.7 ft to -26.3 ft (-4.8 m to -8.0 m), which resulted in an excavation depth ranging from about 27 ft to 39 ft (8.3 m to 12.0 m) below the existing ground surface.Subsurface ConditionsThe subsurface site investigation was performed in three phases by Al-Tamier Engineering Consulting Bureau. During Phase 1, a preliminary investigation was undertaken during the early stages of the project to obtain information about the general stratigraphy and groundwater level at the site. Phase 2 was performed to obtain subsurface information and design parameters, and Phase 3 was performed as a supplementary ground investigation to investigate unexpected ground conditions identified during Phase 2. In total, 14 boreholes were drilled to depths ranging from about 80 ft to 180 ft (24 to 55 m). The generalized subsurface profile is quite heterogeneous, and is predominantly composed of sand with silt and gravel that is underlain by limestone, calcarenite and claystone"

"At the moment climatic conditions are a primary problem of the exploitation of copper ore. The efficiency of preventive actions in order to improve climatic conditions is connected with the knowledge of changing air in underground excavations. This article demonstrates the analysis of types of ventilation dams which are used in sealing abandoned areas on the maintenance of climatic working conditions in excavations has been conducted at the exploitation in Polish copper ore mines. INTRODUCTION The basis for mining activity performed by KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. is mining copper ores from the deposit lying at depths between 600 and 1,200 m below ground level. Activity has continued since 1963. The copper ore deposit is mined in ‘Lubin’, ‘Rudna’ and ‘Polkowice-Sieroszowice’ mines, where difficult climatic conditions occur. The major factor moulding the climatic conditions in headings is the original temperature of rocks, being the result of geological conditions of the lying of the deposit and the existing geothermal degree. In the faces of present opening-out and preparatory headings, driven from mining areas of ‘Rudna’ and ‘Polkowice-Sieroszowice’ mines in order to open out deeper parts of the deposit, the original temperature of rocks reaches 45°C. Excluding the original temperature of rocks, the following are additional factors affecting the deterioration in the climatic conditions: • thermal properties of deposit rocks, • employed room-and-pillar mining systems, which are characterised by a large surface of exposure of rocks, • using self-propelled mining machines with diesel drive, • a high concentration of mining works, • setting up high-power electrical equipment in headings, • complex structures of mine ventilation networks, • a limited number of ventilating shafts, • constantly longer air-transport routes, • a significant accumulation of water increasing the humidity of supplied air. According to the valid Polish provisions (§21, 2013), the primary criterion of assessment of a climatic hazard is the occurrence at a workstation in an underground mining heading of an equivalent climate temperature of more than 26°C, which temperature is determined according to the following dependence:"

Fankou Lead-Zinc Mine produced pyrite concentrate (P.C.) from the zinc tailings by rougher and scavenger flotation before 2010, with the averaged S grade of 40.54% at recovery of 79.34% ( to the feed of S circuit). On the one hand, the economic value of P.C. increases with its purity, on the other hand, when the S grade of P.C. feed to sulfuric acid manufacturer is over 47%, the pyrite cinder can reach a high Fe grade of 62% which can be directly sold as iron concentrate. On this background, engineers in Fankou Mine set the P.C. with S grade of 47% as target. The direct way to reach that goal was to clean the rougher P.C.. Lots of cleaning flotation tests were conducted and the compromised strategy was to produce two ranks P.C. with the S grade of 47% and 38% at the recovery of 44.20% and 36.17%, respectively. The dual-product flowsheet was successfully industrialized in 2010. In order to further improve the quality of P.C., gravity separation was introduced into the flowsheet. The numerical simulation and separation tests were performed to evaluate the beneficiation and classification performance of hydrocyclone as it treated the rougher P.C.. It was shown that the underflow of hydrocyclone could addressed the S grade of 47%, and the finer size overflow could also be enriched to P.C. with S grade of 47% by flotation, due to the contained pyrite with well liberation. That is to say, with the ingenious addition of hydrocyclone to treat the rough P.C., single P.C. with S grade of 47% could be achieved. The new flotation-gravity separation flowsheet was commissioned to produce the high quality P.C. at the end of 2013. The averaged S grade is 47.20% at recovery of 82.26% in 2014. The two steps flowsheet improvement maximizes the enterprise benefits and leads to simple utilization of Fe in pyrite in downstream industry.

Until recently porous bronzes have found many applications for self-lubricating bearings in the automotive, electrical, household appliance and general machine industries. The bulk of an annual production of several million pounds of copper powder had gone into the manufacture of these articles, of which by now more than a billion are in service. However, the war has brought severe curtailment of these bearings because of the scarcity of the two main constituents, copper and tin. The development of substitute materials of equal or superior properties has led to a large-scale replacement by products made from iron powder. In spite of the diminished interest in powdered copper-tin alloys caused by this trend, it was believed worth while to investigate some mechanical properties of these materials as a reference base for substitutes. In addition, experiments using the hot-press method were incorporated to investigate possibilities of saving vital equipment or opening new fields of applications. It must be assumed that by this time the powder metallurgy process of making porous bronzes, a development that found its first industrial applications more than 10 years ago, is well known in engineering. The patent literature and bibliography is volu- minous, most publications referring to porous, self-lubricating bronzes, containing about 10 per cent tin and I to 5 per cent graphite, with porosities in the range of 25 to 35 per cent.l-7 The excellent antifriction properties of these bearings, caused by the uniform impregnation with oil, are dependent on the interconnection of the pores and the uniform distribution of the graphite inclusions. The sintering mechanism of porous bronze, with its structural changes during the transformation of the metal powder into the sintered bearing has been shown in colored photomicrographs by Hall.* Diffusion between copper and tin was found to begin within one minute, when tin-rich transitory phases were formed. After 25 min. a homogeneous matrix of alpha was reached for an alloy containing 9.5 per cent tin and 6 per cent graphite. Price, Williams and Garrand,9 studying certain metal powder combinations in which sintering is accompanied by the cementing action of a liquid phase, including a 90-10 bronze sintered at 925°C., have found that if the treatment is carried out within the liquidus and solidus temperature range of the system, a peculiar process of alternate solution and precipitation occurs. The particles of the major solid constituent are dissolved in the minor liquid phase, but thereafter are reprecipi-tated on certain nuclei, which develop into large grains, usually rounded.

Many of the factors influencing the creep behavior of ferrous alloys have been investigated and reported upon in the literature, including such variables as grain size, steelmaking practice, nature and stability of the microstructure, and the effect of alloying elements in steels. However, with respect to the latter, the microstructures involved are usually heterogeneous and as a result the effect of the addition is related to its effects on the various phases present in the microstructure. In the instances where this structure consists of ferrite and carbide, the behavior of the alloy addition will be related to its action in strengthening ferrite and in opposing temperature softening of ferrite as well as coalescence of carbide. The present paper is the third in a series comprising a comprehensive review of investigations on the properties of iron binary alloys.l,2 Its purpose is to describe the results of isolating one microstructural phase, namely ferrite, and studying its creep characteristics in both the unalloyed and alloyed conditions. This should aid in establishing to a large degree the importance of ferrite in the creep behavior of steels consisting of the previously mentioned ferrite-carbide aggregate. In view of the fact that the present investigation deals only with the effects of silicon, manganese, chromium, molybdenum, nickel, and cobalt, and to a certain extent with the effects of carbon, the review of previous literature will be confined to these elements. Practically no references were encountered dealing with the influence of these elements on the creep characteristics of the isolated phase. However, various contributions have dealt with the creep behavior of low-carbon steels alloyed with the elements under consideration. A particularly concise review in this respect is given by Bullens (Battelle)= and much of this material has been drawn upon. The definite improvement in creep resistance and high-temperature strength conferred by molybdenum is well known. Published suggestions by the A.S.M.E.4 permit of an increase of some 2000 to 5000 lb. per sq. in. in permissible design loads over a temperature range from 650" to IOOO °F. as a consequence of additions of 0.40 to 0.60 per cent of this element in carbon steels of the order of 0.25 to 0.35 per cent carbon content. Babcock and Wilcox Tube CO.5 has published data showing the pronounced increase in stress necessary to cause one per cent creep per 10,000 hr. when additions of 0.5 or I per cent molybdenum are made to a plain carbon steel. These data apply to temperatures over a range from 800° to1000°F. 4

HE success of the sintered aluminum powder material (SAP)' in raising the maximum useful temperature of aluminum alloys has stimulated effort in investigating similar systems in which the metallic matrixes have higher melting points. Examples of such systems which have been studied are nickel-alumina,2, 3copper-silica,4 copper-alumina,4 titanium-cerium oxide,5 and 80/20 nickel-chromium,8 cobalt,= and molybdenum7 matrixes with various hardeners. Conventional precipitation-hardened high-temperature alloys are often thermally unstable in service. The original fine particles that are responsible for good strength properties grow in size at elevated operating temperatures, a process termed "over-aging." This growth of precipitated particles causes a gradual loss in strength properties. A previous paperb describes the factors that govern the process of overaging, and estimates the time required for overaging of a nickel-alloy matrix dispersion-hardened by various precipitates such as are found in current high-temperature alloys, and by alumina. These calculations indicate that nickel-base alloys hardened with Ni3Al, Tic, or TiN are quite unstable at 1340" F (727°F). Such alloys should overage within a few hours at that temperature. A nickel-base alloy hardened with alumina, on the other hand, should behave differently. It should not overage appreciably within a thousand years. It was further shown8 that the thermal stability of the oxide-hardened alloy is mainly due to the low solubility of oxygen in equilibrium with alumina in the nickel-base matrix. Since the oxygen solubility is small, little oxygen can diffuse, and structural changes require very long times. This paper illustrates the effects of time and temperature on the structural stability of nickel alloy matrixes hardened by dispersions of Ni3A1, Ni3Ti, Tic, and alumina, and of nickel-chromium matrixes hardened by alumina. Hardness measurements and metallography have been used as a measure of structural stability. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Using the best information from published phase diagrams,'-l4 compositions of the Ni-Al, Ni-Ti, and Ni-Ti-C alloys were determined so as to have 5 vol pct of precipitate at 1350° F(732°C), the temperature selected to illustrate the effect of time on structural stability. Table I lists the chemical compositions of these alloys. Standard laboratory melting and alloying techniques were used in preparing ingots of the F-Series of alloys. The cast ingots, 1 3/4 in. in diam, were forged to 3/8-in. diam rods.

DURING the past year and a half, the Territorial Department of Mines in Alaska has conducted a modest experimental program for the purpose of determining the extent to which magnetic and resistivity methods can be used in interior Alaska in connection with prospecting, mining and geological studies. Since little information is available concerning previous work,1,2 and since conditions differ considerably from those in most other regions, it was considered advisable to make a general study of the possibilities and limitations of the two methods, rather than a detailed study of any single problem. PROBLEMS One of the most serious handicaps to prospecting and geological study in interior Alaska, especially in the mature regions, is a cover of unconsolidated deposits ranging in thickness from a few feet to several hundred feet. These deposits, some of which are permanently frozen, consist of silt with varying proportions of vegetation and windblown material in the valleys and of residual deposits on the hills.3,4 The problems treated here are caused by the existence of this overburden: I. Location of buried placers. 2. Determination of depth and areal distribution of permanently frozen and of thawed unconsolidated deposits. 3. Location of water-bearing beds under unconsolidated deposits. INSTRUMENTS AND METHODS Magnetic and direct-current resistivity methods were used because they are relatively simple, rapid and inexpensive and because generally they are well suited to the study of the problems indicated. The instruments used were a vertical Schmidt-type magnetometer and a direct-current resistivity instrument similar to those used by the Geophysical Branch of the U. S. Geological Survey.5 For placer surveys with the magnetometer, a sensitivity of about 25 gammas per scale division was found suitable. For resistivity studies of frozen and thawed overburden and of underground water, the Lee partitioning method6 was found to be most generally suitable. In the Lee method a central potential electrode is placed midway between the two potential electrodes of the Wenner four-electrode configuration.7 Nonpolarizable electrodes were made from unglazed porcelain pots about 10 cm. high and 5 cm. in diameter. In order to retard evaporation of the electrolyte the sides of the pots were glazed, inside and out, with clear Duco lacquer. For resistivity work in cold weather, a nonfreezing electrolyte consisting of equal parts of ethylene glycol and a saturated water solution of copper sulphate proved satisfactory. Stainless steel rods of 3/4-in. diameter made excellent current electrodes because their bright finish enabled good ground contacts to be made.

Introduction The San Antonio mine is on the north shore of Rice lake, thirty miles east of lake Winnipeg and 120 miles northeast of the city of Winnipeg. Since production was started in 1932, about 2,000,000 tons of ore have been mined. Currently in progress is an extensive development programme which involves 11,500 feet of crosscuts, 3,800 feet of raises, 1,753 feet of shaft sinking, and 160,000 cubic feet of slashing, all in footwall waste rock. It is the purpose of this .paper to indicate the necessity for this work and to describe the methods employed to carry it out. Where unknown factors are as prevalent as they are in the average Canadian gold mine, a definite answer cannot be given as to what is the most economical and efficient system for mining dipping deposits. At San Antonio, the host rock for the orebodies, locally termed basalt, occurs as a sill some hundreds of feet in width and dipping at approximately 45 degrees from surface to an unknown depth. It may be assumed that it continues well below the lowest depth established to date by diamond drilling. At present, a vertical winze (No. 3 winze) hoists the ore from the 2,360-foot level to the 1,600-foot level, on which it is hauled about 900 feet to No. 3 shaft, also vertical, and there hoisted to the mill bins on surface. To maintain ore reserves at a five-year figure, at full production, additional deep exploration was required immediately. It was decided to sink No. 4 winze, a vertical opening of the same size as the other operating shafts, to provide ten additional levels (17 to 26) at 150-foot intervals, with additional depth to allow for an underground crusher installation and usual loading-pocket facilities for three-ton skip-hoisting. The winze was bottomed at 1,753 feet below the collar, at a depth of 4,117 feet below surface, and is the deepest man-sized opening in Manitoba.

Various analysis techniques are used to determine the nature of a large seismic event that was triggered by a mass blast in an underground mine. This event was recorded by surface accelerometer arrays whose output was doubly integrated using a stable filter to determine the dynamic displacements. The peak dynamic displacements during the blast were 0.09 mm, and during its latter stages, this blast induced a seismic event having a peak dynamic displacement more than ten times larger at 1.26 mm. Polarisation analysis, based on the complex covariance matrix, showed that the seismic event was caused by movement of a known underground fault, close to the blast, which radiated most of its release motion as a shear-horizontal (SH) wave. The change in frequency content with time for the blast and seismic event was initially determined using the Fourier-based reassigned S-method. This analysis showed that the large amplitude seismic event had frequency content significantly lower than that of the blast. Nevertheless, this Fourier technique still retains the problems associated with short time windows as well as the fact that most realistic signals are non-stationary. In order to eliminate such influences, the more recently developed empirical mode decomposition (EMD) was used to obtain the intrinsic mode functions (IMF) of the seismic wave propagation. The EMD vibration analysis showed that each IMF generally exhibited distinct frequency changes throughout the blast and a significant reduction in frequency throughout the subsequent event. It is shown that most of the energy of the seismic event is contained in IMF modes 2, 3 and 4 of the SH wave; the high-frequency first mode (IMF1) contains little energy. The short process of electric furnace steelmaking with direct reduction iron (DRI) as raw material is an important process for smelting high-quality and special steels. In order to prepare high-quality DRI, the pellets with basicity of natural basicity and 0.4 were prepared from magnetite concentrate (MR=0.09, MR=0.4) and hematite concentrate (HR=0.02, HR=0.4). Based on the HYL method, the gas-based direct reduction experiments were conducted under the condition of rich hydrogen (H2/CO = 2.6). The reduction index (RI), reduction swelling (RSI), cold compressive strength (CCS), and phase changes of the pellets were systematically studied. The results show that the RI of four kinds of pellets is greater than four in the temperature range of 800~950°C. For the magnetite pellets, at a fixed reduction temperature, the RSI increases and then gradually decreases, reaching a peak between 50 per cent and 80 per cent. Moreover, the RSI enhances with the increase of the reduction temperature. In general, the RI, RSI, and reduced CCS of the MR=0.09 pellets are better than those of the MR=0.4 pellets. For the hematite pellets, the maximum RSI decreases from 23 per cent to 17 per cent during hydrogen-rich reduction, while the compressive strength increases from 500 to 1070 Nꞏpellet-1. The main reason is that the glass phase generated by the increase of basicity adheres to the surface of hematite grains, hindering the contact between reducing gas and particles. As a result, the apparent activation energy is reduced, which is not conducive to the reduction process. In addition, the glassy phase attached to the hematite reduces the migration rate of Fe2+/Fe3+, resulting in a difference in the reduction expansion rate of hematite in the inner and outer layers of the pellet. Thus, concentric cracks are formed inside the pellets, the RSI increases and reduced CCS decreases.

"A “green” collector project has been initiated at Vale Base Metals Technology Development to replace xanthate. Bench and miniplant testwork showed comparable metallurgical results between xanthate and DTC (sodium dibutyl dithiocarbamate), a “greener” collector. During the first DTC plant trial, a strong interaction between the process water and DTC negatively impacted the metallurgy. The subsequent investigation showed that the quality of process water including suspended solids and dissolved metal ions had a significant impact on the performance with DTC, while less so with PAX. This paper explains these differences using UV spectrophotometry and batch flotation tests. INTRODUCTIONVale Base Metals is dedicated to sustainable mining and mineral processing. One of the key activities is to find a “greener” collector to replace xanthate (PAX: potassium amyl xanthate), which decomposes during storage and flotation causing CS2 emissions in the work place. As the most promising candidate, DTC (sodium dibutyl dithiocarbamate) was evaluated in the lab and miniplant (Dong & Xu, 2011). Consequently, a plant trial was conducted in the winter of 2010. However, the results were not as good as expected. The subsequent investigation showed that the quality of process water played a significant role in the metallurgical performance with DTC but less so with xanthate.From test work in 1996 and 1997, a series of batch tests were performed at Clarabelle Mill to investigate the winter/summer metallurgical shift with xanthate. As shown in Figure 1, the winter metallurgy was considerably worse than the summer metallurgy (Xu & Wilson, 2000). At 80% pentlandite recovery, the concentrate (Cu+Ni) grade was 21% in the winter and 26% in the summer. At 23% (Cu+Ni) concentrate grade, pentlandite recovery was 85% in the summer and 70% in the winter. In the summer, the process water is much cleaner, with very low concentrations of dissolved metals ions and suspended solids; while in the winter, the water is yellow and cloudy, with much higher suspended solids. Based on these results, it was concluded that the process water in winter has a detrimental impact on metallurgy."

The in-pipe treatment of slurries with polymer addition shortly prior to deposition is a noteworthy emerging technology of increasing popularity. Although polymer treatment has been shown to substantially modify and improve depositional and dewatering behaviour in a significant number of cases, the impacts of polymer treatment on geotechnical performance of tailings are less well understood. For example, certain combinations of polymer and slurry type have been shown to result in lower final densities at a given vertical effective stress. Despite these lower densities, polymer-treated tailings often exhibit peak undrained shear strengths consistent with untreated material. However, the sensitivity and/or brittleness of the material may be negatively influenced by the looser state created. Although these changes have been studied, most testing available in the literature was undertaken on relatively ‘fresh’ samples of polymer-treated material. However, significant shear may occur following treatment and prior to the commencement of settling and self-weight consolidation as the material moves down the beach.To study the effects of shearing on the subsequent performance of polymer-treated tailings, a test program consisting of consolidation, triaxial and direct simple shear tests was undertaken on presheared polymer-treated material. Materials used were identical to those used in previously published studies on the impacts of polymer treatment in a ‘fresh’ condition. Shearing of the polymer-treated material generally appeared to lessen the impacts of the polymer treatment process. However, the behaviour of the material when sheared indicated that the polymer was still impacting the behaviour of the material in some respects. The results indicate the importance of the consideration of shearing on material behaviour when planning and designing a tailings deposit where polymer treatment is to be implemented.CITATION:Reid, D and Fourie, A, 2015.
