The majority of published material regarding the operation of crushing machinery is concerned with simulation of performance rather than design of equipment. The reason underlying the bias in published material relates to why research is carried out and who undertakes the research. Two distinct types of research can be identified: 1. Internal research by crusher manufacturers - generally related to mechanical design, value engineering and to the commercial realities attached to sales demands. Any work on basic crusher geometry or rock/machine interaction is of a sensitive nature and rarely enters the public domain. 2. Academic research - mostly confined to modelling of crusher performance and simulation. This is not because of any bias, but crusher design requires access to manufacturers data or at least an in-depth understanding of crusher design, which is rarely available. The crushing of rock is a complicated problem. It involves three aspects; the machine geometry, the material composition (type of rock/feed size distribution) and the machine/rock interaction. The machine geometry is often ignored in empirical mineral processing simulations, while the response of different feed materials is only nominally addressed in machine specifications provided by manufacturers. The manner by which the machine produces a stress field and causes different types of breakage for different rocks (or the machine/rock interaction) is sadly neglected by both groups. All three aspects must be considered collectively to successfully understand and model the entire crushing process. 1. The importance of crushing is often underestimated. In mining and mineral processing the invisibility of the crushing process is understandable as it merely provides a coarse reduction stage prior to the intricacies of mineral extraction. However in the quarrying industry crushing and screening basically provide the finished product. A brief overview of the quarrying industry shows the importance of crushing. Figure 1 gives production figures for most of the western European countries, Australia and the USA.

"This report investigates whether it is tractable and thereupon reasonable to remove the boosterinfluences when ranking the toxic fumes of non-cap-sensitive mining explosives. The hazard potential is represented by relative fume toxicity RFT, the resultant influence computed from a formulated rule with a restricted set (tally) of fume components and multiplying constants. The RFT result is compared to the rule criterion that represents the worst case tolerable toxicity stipulated by regulations or otherwise. The typical nonstoichiometric booster composition can render notable unwanted influence on the RFT ranking results. Historically, the remedy was to shoot the booster separately and reduce the trial concentrations by the relevant subtractions. Unreal negative concentration results were noted on rare occasions, revealing the faulty nature of the reduction procedure. With thermodynamic reaction chemistry codes TDRC, on the other hand, the booster ingredients can be retained in or removed from the reactant tabulation, yielding reduction factors taken as the concentration ratios for the two circumstances. The underlying presumption regarding reduction factors is that the ratios of component concentrations with and without the booster ingredients when resolved theoretically ought to equal those rendered experimentally, when tractable. Upon rearranging the presumed relationship, the unadjusted fume concentrations divided by theoretical reduction factors yield the wanted readjusted fume concentrations, thereby removing the booster influence without generating unreal negative concentrations."

Gold dissolution can be achieved with a number of complexing ligands, all with varying degrees of stability. Processes based on the use of halogens have been known for many years. Beside providing the necessary complex- ing role, the halogens under the appropriate conditions are very effective oxidants for gold. Of the halogens, the gold iodide complexes are the most stable in aqueous solution. Iodine can establish the desired oxidation poten- tial for oxidizing gold, and unlike chlorine and bromine, the oxidizing potential of iodine is mild enough to avoid the oxidation of impurity constituents like metal sulfides. A series of experiments to investigate the fundamental electrochemistry of gold in different halide solutions was performed. Cyclic voltammograms of gold in the presence of 10-2 M chloride, bromide and iodide, respectively show that for a given potential the rate of oxidation is much faster in iodide solution than in either chloride or bromide. An overlay of linear sweep voltammograms for the anodic oxidation of gold in iodide and the cathodic reduction of iodine species on gold provides an effective method for examining the dissolution of gold in iodideftodine solution. The dissolution rates obtained from both electrochemical and actual leaching results are compared. Optimum leaching conditions are analyzed in terms of the iodide/iodine concentrations. Conceptual processes for the recovery of gold and iodide and the regeneration of iodine are discussed.

Considerable interest has been shown, during recent years, in the possibilities of developing oil fields in the South American Republics, now that the exhaustion of our present fields can be seen in the not very distant future. The demand for fuel oil and its products has been increasing far more rapidly than our increment of production during the last few years. Increase of consumption has been largely curtailed by the lack of sufficient supply. The main factors that have contributed to our previous neglect of the southern fields have been as follows:, (a) Lack of sufficient demand for the product. (b) Competition with producing fields, having large production, low cost, and better geographical position, such as Tampico, Mexico. (c) Greater interest in home fields with ready market at hand. (d) Our ignorance of southern economic and geologic conditions, clue to the distance between those areas and our financial centers. (e) Economic conditions in the southern countries, necessitating high costs of exploration and exploitation of the fields.

I realize even more that I must tell as much as seems necessary since I have already demonstrated the methods of recognizing the natures and locations of the metals, of smelting and reducing them to their ultimate perfection, and finally have taught you to make their associations and alloys. It is especially necessary since this art and work is not well known, so that no one can practice it who is not, so to speak, born to it, or who does not have much talent and good judgment. For this reason and also because it is closely related to sculpture, whose arms are the support of its life, it is very highly esteemed. In order to describe the whole art in every part, I say that the greatest labors of both mind and body are required for its operations in the beginning, middle, and end. It is indeed true that these labors are endured with pleasure because they are associated with a certain expectation of novelty, produced by the greatness of art and awaited with desire, particularly since the artificer sees that it is an art pleasing and delightful even to ignorant men. As a result, as if ensnared, he is often unable to leave the place of work. To conclude: The outcome of this art is dependent upon and subject to many operations which, if they are not all carried out with great care and diligence and well observed throughout, convert the whole into nothing, and the result becomes like its name [cast away]. H. M. BOYLSTON, Cambridge, Mass.-I would first like to ask what machine Capt. Bellis used to make his tests on impact strength. I have made some tests with the Charpy impact machine, the specimen being supported at both ends and nicked in the middle, and, find that the results do not always agree with those obtained by the Izod and other machines. I would also like to ask what effect the composition and heat treatment of the tool steel had on the drilling of his rifle barrels, as compared, with the heat treatment of the steel itself? I notice that the analysis of the composition of steel used shows sulphur 0.050 and phosphorus 0.065; I should like to ask how those high limits of sulphur and phosphorus came to be allowed? I have some data which lead me to feel pretty certain that those high limits make for very unsafe steel in rifle barrels. It has never been explained to the satisfaction of all of us, why the manganese is so high: 1.22 per cent. I believe several reasons have been stated; among them, that it is high in order to compensate for the high sulphur, and also to increase the elastic limit and improve other physical properties of steel. Lastly, I wish to ask whether Capt. Bellis has tried any different methods of heat-treating his steel rifle barrels? Apparently these were all heat-treated before machining; has he had any experience with heat-treatment after machining, especially after drilling? Those questions may seem somewhat outside of the range of this -paper, but they are important, and if Captain Bellis can give us any information, it will be very helpful. Dr. J. A. MATHEWS,* Syracuse, N. Y.-The same subject was discussed here last year, and the earlier papers by Dr. Carle Hayward seem to indicate that nothing was gained by the length of time of 'tempering. (It should be borne in mind that his results were based upon electrical and magnetic measurements and not upon tensile tests.) That idea has been accepted as gospel by steel workers, until late years, and particu-larly in connection with alloy steels, on which there is no question that the effect of time of tempering is very marked.

"Al-Li binary alloys with nominal Li contents of0.15, 1.1and2.8 (in wt%) were aged naturally at room temperature for two months, aged at low temperatures ( 65 and 1 OOEC) for up to 2 months and aged artificially at 190EC for 4 days after water quenching to 25EC following solutionizing at 530EC for 20 minutes. Ageing behavior of these binary alloys were studied by Vicker's Hardness measurements and DSC thermal analysis. Thermal analysis results indicate the formation of GP zones of Al-Li system in Al-2.8wt%Li binary alloy. In the same alloy, rapid quenching from one phase region (a) gives rise to precipitation of small o' particles in a matrix (a) with still high supersaturation. During ageing of this alloy below lOOEC an additional transformation, i.e., GP zone formation occurs proceeding at a very high rate which is described on the basis of the theoretical analysis for the quenched Al-Li system proposed by Khachaturyan et al [6]. Ageing at temperatures below 11 OEC takes place slowly by the formation of small d' particles of lower thermal stability than the quenched-in d precipitates in addition to GP zones resulting in an increase in hardness compared to water quenched samples. During artificial ageing, GP zones transform by dissolution to d' precipitates while d' particles already in the microstructure coarsen during under aged condition at which hardness increases with time till peak aged condition.IntroductionIn binary Al-Li alloys the d' (Al3Li) fully coherent internally ordered inetastable phase of Li2 structure with a=0.4038d [1-5] forms homogeneously between 120 and 190EC before the formation of stable d' (A!Li) phase and cause the superior mechanical properties. This is due to an appreciable age hardening effect resulting because of the d' precipitation during ageing [1]. The response of d' to decomposition and its formation kinetics have been studied previously and it is believed that the decomposition of the a-supersaturated solid solution occurs in a two stage process; i.e., a 6 d' (Al3Li) 6 d(A!Li). Khachturyan et al [6] theoretically investigated precipitation of the d' phase and gave an interpretation of the transformation paths of the quenched Al-Li alloys. They predict that the disordered supersaturated solid solution congruently orders, and then the uniformly ordered solution decomposes into ordered regions that differ in Li-content. Finally, ordered d' phase forms in the disordered matrix."

[Composition profiles for atomic, radical, and stable species, as well as temperature and area expansion ratio profiles, have been determined for a nearly stoichiometric CH4-02-Ar flame and one to which 0.3 percent CF5Br inhibitor had been added. Net reaction rate profiles were calculated for all the observed species. For the normal flame, these and the mole fraction profiles gave rate coefficient information about the elementary reactions in the methane flame, for example, CH. + 0 4- H2CO 0 H, k4 = 1.05 X 1014CM3 mole-1sec-1 for 1,550§T 0,725' K; CO + OH 4 C02 + H, k6= 4.7 X 1011 for 1,350{T X1,750° K. Comparison between the inhibited and normal flame showed that A] and [CH3] were significantly reduced at the lower temperatures in the inhibited flame even though in the hot gas region the [E] [OH!, and [0] were essentially the same in both flames. The CF3Br disappears very early in the flame, relative to the fuel, and the reaction primarily responsible for its disappearance is H v CF3Br 4 HBr + CF3, where k7 is found to be 2.2 X 1014 exp(-9460/RT) for 700-1,550° K. Reaction of the inhibitor with methyl radicals provides for the relatively small amounts of CH3Br observed, but CH3 + Br2 - CHs Br + Br must also occur. The HBr formed reacts rapidly with H atoms to form H2 and Br, but the reaction is soon "balanced" in the flame as may be demonstrated by calculation of the equilibrium constant at various temperatures. The fluoro-carbon fragment produced in reaction (7) also reacts rapidly, in part with methyl radicals to give the observed elimination product CH2CF2 Later in the flame, above -1,400' K, F2CO is formed from the reaction CH2CF2 + 0 P F2CO + CH2 and k., -1.5 X 1013 at 1,600° K. The rather slow decay of carbonyl fluoride is attributed to reaction with H atoms according to the sequence F2CO I H - HF + FCO and FCO + H HF + CO.]

UrbanGold and its partners from Mettop and SMS group have developed a novel technology for the recovery of valuables from all non-ferrous metals’ fractions of WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment), with a special focus on low qualities which are commonly landfilled or incinerated. The technology is marketed under the brand name “UrbanGold Flex” to illustrate the high flexibility in respect of plant design and raw material portfolio, allowing also the processing of low grade material and materials with high caloric values. The process of the technology’s centrepiece, a modified and enhanced bath smelting furnace called “HENRI”, was investigated in numerous pyrometallurgical trials as basis for a scale-up towards a capacity of up to 100,000 tons of WEEE-concentrates per year. All relevant facility components have been evaluated in respect of references, fall-back options, as well as exit strategies (alternatives) to minimize risks when establishing a novel technology. A spin-off within the development is the “UrbanGold Compact” technology which can be seen as optimization of state-of-the-art smelters by using an optimized TBRC as primary processing unit. As an UrbanGold Compact plant will be the first industrial scale reference of UrbanGold’s technologies, it is also explained in the publication. As precious metals recovery is of major (economical) importance when recycling WEEE, major attention has been given to minimize the losses of these valuables. These measures, as well as a sophisticated way of utilizing waste heat as far as possible, result in interesting business cases with gross profits of up to 20% or even more. INTRODUCTION Over the past years, the demand of electrical and electronic equipment has increased dramatically with technological progress. Innovations on the technology of electronic devices led to a shorter usage and lifespan and thus boosted the generation of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). WEEE is one of the fastest growing waste streams, growing at 3 to 4% per year worldwide and is expected to reach more than 52 million tons per year by 2021. Currently, about 45 Mt of these wastes are estimated to arise worldwide, and the trend is rising (Baldé et al., 2017).

"For engineering problems of “three under” coal (coal trapped under buildings, waters-bodies and railways) exploitation, environment protection and gangue separation from raw coal underground exist in Tangshan Coal Colliery. By analyzing concrete technical problems, a technical approach of closed cycle “coal mining-gangue washing-backfilling-coal mining”, i.e. integration of coal mining, gangue separation and solid backfilling, is put forward with key technologies including gangue transportation with great depth, gangue separation from raw coal underground and integration of coal mining and backfilling. Based on the specific geological conditions of Tangshan Coal Colliery, 591m vertical feeding transportation system with great depth is designed; meanwhile, for efficient gangue transportation, ancillary wear-resisting pipe size and buffer equipment are optimized. Underground gangue separation system is created to be joined with the existing production system and backfilling system; besides, as per separation characteristics of coal and gangue, buddle jig is adopted for gangue roughing of raw coal underground. By cooperation of backfilling hydraulic support and other key equipment, the designed stope backfilling system completely realizes integration of coal mining and backfilling. Engineering practice shows that, through the research and implementation of the above key technologies, integration of coal exploitation, gangue separation and solid backfilling is successfully implemented in Tangshan Coal Colliery; moreover, it completely solves the three major engineering problems and realizes waste disposal, underground washing and separation, and ground surface subsidence control.INTRODUCTIONSo far, “three under” coal (coal trapped under buildings, watersbodies and railways) and key state-owned coal resources trapped under villages in China have reached 13.7 billion t and 5.22 billion t, respectively. With the development of coal enterprises, China currently has more than 1,600 gangue dumps (Miao et al., 2010a) with accumulated stack amount of 4.5 billion t, occupying a land area of 150,000 km2; moreover, surface subsidence caused by mining activities has damaged the environments of industry, agriculture, transportation and living, while new environmental pollution sources formed by coal related industries also result in damage to ecological environment (Huang et al., 2011a). On the one hand, due to large scale coal mining, some coal collieries suffering from resource exhaustion are faced with survival problems; on the other hand, coal mining has caused and been faced with increasingly prominent environmental problems, such as “three under” coal exploitation, waste disposal and ground surface subsidence control (Miao et al., 2010b; Zhang et al., 2009)."

Due to recent regulations limiting tolerated lead concentrations in copper alloys, new recycling strategies have to be considered. This study investigates the suitability of technical approaches in order to recycle leaded copper alloys exemplified by CuZn39Pb2 and produce an alloy in compliance with future lead regulations in the European Union. Three pyrometallurgical methods are considered to achieve this goal, namely vacuum distillation, intermetallic precipitation and fractional crystallisation. The impact of essential process parameters i.e. pressure, temperature, time, atmosphere and quantity of additives are identified using thermochemical and kinetic modelling. An experimental implementation reveals a general suitability of all three refining processes. However, the individual efficiency of the different methods strongly differs. Thus, a detailed assessment is carried out in order to provide an evaluation on the efficiencies of these methods from a technological, economical and environmental point of view. Taking a possible industrial realisation into account, the authors recommend the approach of vacuum distillation, although the energy demanded is comparatively high due to the enthalpy of evaporation for zinc, or rather, lead. However, required lead concentrations can be reached quickly without introducing an external element to the material. The prediction of selectivity and evaporation speed, which are immanent variables for a successful implementation, can be validated experimentally. INTRODUCTION In 2016 approximately 1 million tonnes of leaded copper alloy semi-finished goods with an average lead content of 2.1 Ma% have been produced in the European Union (EU). The global production in the same period exceeded 5.5 million tonnes, while the lead concentration has stayed constant at around 2.4 Ma% for the last 50 years. Up to 80 % of the current production volume is covered with end-of-life scraps, which are used for direct re-melting, depending on the alloy composition. Lead has been a popular alloying element in copper alloys in general, and in particular in brass due to its positive impact on various mechanical, physical and chemical properties, especially machinability. Health and environmental concerns were drivers for many governments to implement limitations on lead. In order to further utilise the resource potential of leaded copper scrap, it is inevitable to develop methods to efficiently eliminate lead from circulation as far as possible. Through both single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction methods, ten A6B23-type compounds have been confirmed to exist between lanthanides (A) (plus scandium and yttrium) and manganese (B); A = Y, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, and Lu. The formation of a compound of this type is shown to he extremely atomic size-sensitive; hence it can be classified as a "size-factorH compound. The "enveloping effect", a geometrical consideration observed in its crystal structure, is proposed as the reason for the A6B23-type compound being size-sensitive. The approximate ideal geometrical ratio of the radii R/r is 1.31 while experimentally A6B23-type compounds have a radius ratio lying within the range 1.2 to 1.4. FLORIO t al.' characterized the structure of Th6MnZ3 as fcc, space group Fm3m, with 116 atoms in the unit cell. Since then, a number of isotypic binary compounds, and recently Gd n,,' have been confirmed to exist. The fact that strontium and barium form A6Bz3-type compounds with magnesium strongly suggested the possible existence of Ba6Liz3. However, investigation3 showed the compound Ba6LiZ3 to be absent. Since both strontium and barium are group 11-a elements and are therefore "open metals",6 the nonexistence of Ba6LiZ3 can hardly be explained satisfactorily by valence-electron considerations. On the other hand, the consistent atomic-radius ratio, (R/r),* observed for the known A6Bz3-type compounds,3 strongly suggests that the formation of compounds of this type is atomic size-sensitive. Therefore, one is tempted to explain the nonexistence of Ba6LiZ3 entirely on the basis of the atomic-size difference between strontium and barium. However, this approach is not entirely without objection. Atoms are not rigid spheres and are known to vary in size within certain limits.7 Since the atomic-radius difference between strontium and barium (0.07 to 0.09A) is within these limits, it is reasonable to assume that the size difference would have a negligible effect on the formation of Ba6LiZ3. This view is further supported by the fact that the radius ratio, R/r, in other known "size-factor" compounds is observed to range widely—for example, from 1.08 to 1.45 for ABz-type compounds (C15, MgCuz type)' and from 1.37 to 1.58 for AB5-type compounds (D2d, CaZn5 type).g The present investigation was undertaken in order to find a more satisfactory explanation for the non-existence of Ba6LiZ3 and, consequently, a better understanding of the nature of the A6Bz3-type compound. The primary objectives are to confirm the previous conclusion3 that the A6B23-type compound is indeed a "size-factor" compound and subsequently to determine the atomic-radius ratio range in which the A6Bz3-type compound can exist. In order to achieve these objectives, stoichiometric A6Bz3 alloys, where manganese (B) was alloyed with various lanthanide elements (A), were selected for investigation. The atomic-radius ratios of lanthanide elements with manganese range from 1.26 for Lu/~n to 1.46 for Eu/Mn. This radius ratio range includes and exceeds the range of all previously reported A6Bz3-type compounds—1.32 for Th/Mn' through 1.38 for Sr/Li. Furthermore, the atomic-size difference between successive elements of the lanthanide series in order of atomic number) is of the order of 0.01A (europium and ytterbium are exceptions). The series of lanthanon-manganese alloy systems is ideally suited to a precise determination of the limits of allowable atomic-radius ratio for A6Bz3-type compound formation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The lanthanide metals, in ingot form, supplied by Michigan Chemical Corp. (St. Louis, Mich.) and Nuclear Corp. of America (Burbank, Calif.), were guaranteed by the suppliers to be at least 99.9 wt pct pure (traces of silicon, calcium, and other minor constituents present on occasion, not to be more than 0.05 wt pct) as shown by spectrographic analysis. Manganese metal, in polycrystalline form, was redistilled from the commercial, chemically pure grade and was analyzed to be at least 99.95 wt pct pure. A comparison of the mine site before and after mining is made to demonstrate the ""best practice"" in modern mining.Sustainability in Mineral Resource Development Extraction of mineral resources and other natural resources on the Earth has been and will continue to be an essential activity necessary to support human’s life. We live on the planet and depend on the available resources to survive. The extracted materials form the base to support modern life. However, we must be aware of the fact that mineral resources are limited on the Earth and may not last forever. Every time we extract one ton of materials, there is one ton less. They are not able to regenerate or regrow. One can ask a simple question: How long will they last? Or, is there anything left for our great grandchildren and many generations to come? The answer is not simple. Some minerals have become scarce or about to deplete. Some minerals may last longer. The reserve of a type of minerals depends on what we have discovered and the minable amount depends on accessibility and technology we have. Even if there are minerals in the deep ground, we may be limited by our technological capability. At the same time, we also need to understand the action of mineral extraction from the ground and the consequences of that action. Mineral extraction is a very hard work. We must break the ground to extract the ore, either through surface mining or underground mining. This action means disturbance of the land where we live. The disturbance is much more visible in surface mining than underground mining. The disturbed land, if not properly reclaimed after mining, is not going to be reusable. The very purpose of extracting minerals from the ground is to support our life but the action has a negative impact on our life. How can we reduce and limit disturbance of land from the action of minerals extraction? How can we make the disturbed land reusable? These issues must be properly addressed and a balance achieved."

For the third successive year it appears that demand for platinum will exceed supplies of newly-mined metal, forecasts Johnson Matthey in its "Platinum 1987 Interim Review." Based on data available at the end of August 1987, Johnson Matthey estimates that western world demand for platinum could exceed 93t (3 million oz) for the first time ever in 1987. Given a likely increase in demand of 4.3t to around 94t (140,000 oz to around 3.02 million oz), up by about 5% over 1986, there would be a 1.8- to 2.2-t (60,000- to 70,000-oz) shortfall in 1987 supply. South African mines enjoying undisrupted production last year after strikes affected Impala's output in 1986. The rate of increases in western world supplies, though, has probably not kept pace with the growth in demand. A downturn in US demand for platinum was counterbalanced by substantially increased purchases from Japanese and Western European consumers of the metal. Total imports of platinum into Japan in 1987 may have reached a record level of 45t (1.45 million oz). The largest source of demand for platinum remains its use in autocatalysts US and Japanese auto manufacturers reduced their platinum purchases in the wake of falling car production. Therefore, a small decline in overall 1987 sales of perhaps 780 kt (25,000 oz) was expected in 1987. Western European demand, however, rose strongly as a result of increased output. The spread of exhaust emission control regulations has sharply boosted the number of cars equipped with three-way catalysts containing platinum and rhodium. Western European auto makers probably needed 5.6t (180,000 oz) of platinum last year, a 50% increase over 1986. The jewelry industry, the second largest user of platinum, increased its offtake of platinum in 1987. Japan, the key to the jewelry industry's consumption of platinum, could absorb 24.8 to 26.4 (800,000 to 850,000 oz) in 1987, compared with 23t (740,000 oz) in 1986. Platinum has wide and diverse applications in industry. Other major users are the chemical, glass, electronics and petroleum industries. They were expected to increase their aggregate demand by about 1.8t (60,000 oz), or 11% in 1987. Investment demand for small platinum bars and coins of up to 311g (10 oz) dropped back in relatively inhospitable conditions. This, after rapid increases in recent years and a surge in US demand in 1986. However, Japanese investors purchasing bars weighing 500g or 1 kg (16 to 32 oz), and considered more speculative, recovered last year. Over the first eight months of 1987, platinum performed strongly on the open market with average prices well up from 1986 in dollar terms. But the increase was less marked where measured in sterling or yen. Platinum ad¬vanced by $3.70/g ($115 per oz) between Jan. 1 and mid-September with the average price having been surpassed only in the heady days of 1980. Johnson Matthey believes that supply and demand appear likely to keep more or less in step on a gently rising path. The recent open market volatility will continue with prices fluctuating widely over short periods. Writing in mid-September, and basing its view on the tangible evidence of platinum's price fall since the review was written, the company's assessment of price prospects is unchanged. Demand for platinum remains strong all-round. In October, imports of platinum into Japan were exceptionally high. And in the US and Japan there was a marked resurgence of demand from private investors. Although market sentiment may have been influenced in part by the news of several potential new platinum mines in South Africa, the full effects of these prospects on supply, even if they were all to materialize, would not be felt before the early-mid 1990s, Johnson Matthey said. According to the review, no radical change in platinum supplies is discernible in the near-term. Incremental growth from South Africa can be expected as the major producers continue to make the most of their existing resources. The Soviet Union may be keener to sell than it appeared earlier in 1987, especially if prices hold up, but a substantial increase is improbable. Canadian supplies are not capable of much variation from present levels. The palladium-rich Stillwater mine will make a modest contribution. Referring to the investment market, Johnson Matthey concluded that despite this year's reduction in sales of small-denomination investment products, platinum does appear to have established itself with private investors. Bearing in mind how business multiplied in comparatively unfavorable conditions before 1986, it is reasonable to look for a resumption of growth once the climate improves.

ISOTHERMAL formation of martensite in a copper-aluminum-nickel alloy was previously reported by Hull and Garwood.' In the present work an attempt has been made to investigate some of the character- istics of the formation of isothermal martensite in binary copper-aluminum alloys containing 14.00 and 14.50 pct Al, respectively. Chill-cast alloys were prepared from OFHC copper and aluminum of greater than 99.5 pct purity. They were homogenized for 24 hr at 950° C. Polished samples were soaked at 1000°C and quenched in water to retain the p phase untransformed; martensite did not form during the quench. The surface was then repolished for isothermal microscopic studies at room temperature. The salient features of the martensitic transformation in copper-aluminum alloys observed in this investigation are: a) The transformation progresses (i) by nuclea-tion at new sites and (ii) by simultaneous slow isothermal growth of existing martensite plates. Slow isothermal growth of martensite has previously been observed by Holden2 in an uranium-chromium alloy and by Hull and Garwood in copper-aluminum-nickel alloy. b) Martensite plates nucleate preferentially at the pin holes formed during the casting of the specimen, Fig. 1. c) Some of the martensite plates pass right through other plates lying in their path, Fig. 1. d) Martensite plates cross grain boundaries without any change in the direction of growth. e) An irregular network of markings, Fig. 2, appears simultaneously with the formation of martensite. It was less prominent in the case of 14.5 pct alloy. The markings may arise due to spontaneous deformation under the lattice strains of the martensitic transformation. Crossing of martensite plates was first observed by Kulin and cohen3 when a high-nickel steel was cooled to 77°K. They suggested that the rapidly advancing plates atquire considerable kinetic energy and strike the obstructing plate with a momentum so as to nucleate the process on the other side of the plate. This, however, fails to explain the present observation where the slow isothermally growing martensite plates cross each other. Such plates would not possess large momentum to bodily displace the obstructing plate. Fig. 1 shows the martensite plates crossing each other without body displacements. This should be contrasted with Fig. 3 of Kulin and Cohen's paper where crossing of plates is accompanied by shearing or body displacements of the plates. The present observations can, how-

In the Parkes process of lead refining, after desilverization has been completed by means of zinc additions, there will remain in the lead from 0.5 to 0.6 per cent zinc. At this stage in the refining practically all impurities are reduced to refined lead specifications except zinc and antimony. All excess of copper and nearly all the arsenic goes out with the silver. Silver remaining should not exceed 0.1 oz. per ton. It thus remains only to remove zinc and antimony to produce refined lead. The older practice was to complete refining by means of oxidation processes in reverberatory furnaces. Essentially this consisted of heating the lead to 1200' to 1300" I?. and allowing it to come in contact with a considerable excess of air passing through the furnace, or accomplish the same result by blowing the lead with steam by means of pipes introduced for that purpose, at the same time allowing air to enter the furnace. Usually some procedure involving alternate oxidation and reduction with fine coal or coke was employed in order to reduce the weight of dross or skim finally removed from the furnace. This practice had many elements of weakness in that the main flour of lead, after the preceding expensive operations had been performed, and the whole refining process nearly completed, was subjected to an operation at a comparatively high temperature, which involved much lead loss if the furnaces were not on bags, and the production of 3 to 5 per cent of the weight of the lead as dross or skim, which had to be resmelted and the lead either refined or produced as antimonial lead. In addition, the operating expense of the process was a considerable item. The process of dezincing with chlorine was developed as a substitute for the foregoing described oxidation process, and finally resulted in such advantages as nearly equal operating costs, a practical elimination of the lead loss, and the direct production of a very valuable byproduct, zinc chloride, that may be sold as such or retreated for its zinc and chlorine contents, both of which can be reused in the refining processes. Essentially this process consists of circulating the lead by means of a pump in a kettle through a closed reaction cylinder, gaseous chlorine entering the reaction cylinder with the stream of lead from the pump. R. S. Handy (Santa Rosa, Calif.)—It would be interesting to learn the comparative results of treating the Korean scheelite ore described in this paper according to the following procedure: I—Follow the procedure described in the paper to the recovery of the sulphides by flotation. 2—Dilute the residue from the sulphide flotation strongly with water and disperse the contained colloids by adding a mixture of 75 pct sodium silicate and 25 pct quebracho to dispersion point. 3— Settle the dispersed pulp and decant the supernatant colloids. 4—-Dilute, settle, and decant the pulp until the settled residue is crystalline. Not over 10 pct of the tungsten minerals should follow the colloids. 5—Treat the settled residue by flotation, having established the proper pH. Oleic acid homogenized with cresylic acid or kerosene is more selective for scheelite than is oleic acid alone. (The recovery of the contained tungsten minerals should be practically complete in this operation.) 6—Deflocculate the tungsten concentrate from step 5 with the same dispersion agents as in step 2 and treat the deflocculated pulp by gravity. The minerals that tend to float with scheelite are generally of low specific gravity and the separation is efficient. The heavier contaminants, such as pyrrhotite and magnetite can be removed magnetically, leaving a practically pure scheelite. E. J. Pryor (Imperial College of Science and Technology, London)—It occurred to me that instead of using temperature as a differentiating control, more precision might be obtained with a reagent of a type we developed here for the flotation of high grade fluorspar in cold pulps. This reagent, which is manufactured on a modest scale in England, is based on oleic acid, which has been modified by our patented process to ensure complete stable dispersion at any desired concentration in water. It thus becomes possible to utilise unimolecular layers with good selectivity. In the fluorspar flotation for which we developed it, it is possible to hold a tight control on depressing quebracho for the calcite without substantial loss of flu-orite, and recovery exceeding 99 pct is not uncommon in the mill where it is in use, even under wintry conditions. MOIL Limited is operating 7 underground and 3 opencast mines in central India and producing annually more than 1.2 million tonnes of various grades of manganese ore. The underground mines are operating at shallow - 90 m at Munsar mine to moderate - 353 m at Balaghat mine below the surface with horizontal cut and fill (HCF) or its variant method of stoping with post filling by hydraulic sand stowing. The Munsar mine is being worked underground since 1903. The opencast mining is presently stopped. The ore body below the opencast quarry is geological continuity of the area excavated in past by opencast method of mining. The underground mining is done through the adit in three levels i.e. 270’L, 220’L, 170’L and by incline in western part of the property at 70’L. The horizontal drift development has been developed in the manganese ore body with sill drive of 5 m above the sill pillar in lower level at 70’L and barrier pillar of 5 m thickness is left for protection of upper level at 170’L. Valuable mineral has been locked in sill pillar and therefore rock mechanics investigations have been carried out. On the basis of study now the drift development has been carried out in footwall rock at 70’L, (-) 30’L and below levels and it has improved the mineable manganese ore by about 20%. In this modified HCF stope design, an alternative fill material in place of sand, which has been developed in house by use of overburden (OB) material after treatment, has been used for hydraulic stowing. The experimental trials find out that the alternative fill material of OB is more compact and forming a non expansion floor for the men and machines in the stope. This will certainly help in the introduction of mobile underground mining equipment for drilling in the stopes and mechanical mucking, transportation and loading of the ROM. The paper presents rock mechanics investigations and future use of alternative fill material of OB for better safety and productivity at Munsar Mine of MOIL. "The obscurity which still veils from us the true nature of veins will become more acid more cleared up when they can be considered in connection with the geological structure of the regions in which they occur." 1 THESE words, according to Lossen, the biographer of the late Dr. A. von Groddeck, of Clausthal, were the last received by him from that eminent man, perhaps the most far-sighted and carefully progressive of recent writers on ore-deposits. They seem to me to form a fitting text for what I am about to say ; since I find that many of the conclusions at which I have arrived by my own study of the structural relations of ore-deposits,or, in other words, of the structural and dynamic geology of the regions in which they occur in this country, have been similarly determined by hint within recent years in Europe, and especially in his home field of work, the Harz. I shall not enter upon a detailed account of how far other workers may have arrived at similar conclusions with myself, since these questions of priority are of little interest, except to those immediately concerned; but will briefly present the methods by which, in my work in this country, I have arrived at certain generalizations, and will point out the practical bearing which they may have upon the work of mining engineers.
