The chance that a Howe Memorial Lecturer will be able to refer back to a personal contact with the distinguished metallurgist for whom this lectureship is named grows steadily I I did not have the pleasure of his personal acquaintance, but I did receive from him in 1916, quite unexpectedly, a letter commenting On a paper that I had recently published27 On "Types of Prismatic Structure in Igneous Rocks." The paper was written for geologists and petrologists, but it had an application, naturally, to the crystallization of iron and steel in a mold. The letter impressed me at the time, and still does, with the breadth of of Howe's interests and his perseverance in keeping up with the progress of any branch of knowledge that had metallurgical connotations. Scope of the Lecture During several years preceding the date mentioned I had worked in collaboration with Arthur L. Day and E. T. Allen8 at the Geophysical Laboratory, Carnegie Institution of Washington, on the temperature scale as defined by the nitrogen thermometer at high temperatures. Later (1928-1947) I had the opportunity of helping to apply this experience to the pyro-metric problems of the steel industry. Because of the range of its temperatures, the multiplicity of the methods used, and the variety of its purposes, pyrometry in the open-hearth process has always offered a fertile field for both research and development. I am therefore devoting an hour to the subject of temperatures in the basic open-hearth furnace, the furnace that makes most of our steel in the united States. I would direct your attention particularly to the choice of the first two words in the title of the Lecture. One sometimes hears or reads of the ((temperature of such-and-such a furnace," as if it were a single, measurable, characteristic quantity. I need hardly emphasize to any one who has ever operated a furnace or a kiln that " temperature of the furnace " is a meaningless phrase. Even if we confine our attention to the space enclosed by the roof, walls, and hearth of an open-hearth furnace, it is doubtful whether any such space has ever been so uniform in temperature that the phrase would have a meaning. In any furnace, there are many different temperatures, capable of being measured at many different places, and actually being measured for several different purposes. These pyrometric purposes, methods, and results, if given in detail, would expand this lecture into a book on the basic open-hearth process. I must therefore confine myself to a statement of the range of temperatures as they have been observed in various parts of the furnace, indicating in a general way why they are measured, and mentioning the methods that are available without attempting to describe these

Empirical models used for predicting the performance of screens on the basis of capacity, cut size, water split and grade efficiency curves were evaluated. This paper reports experimental results obtained with single-deck Derrick screens. The performance of the screen was tested with limestone in a separate screen set-up, in a pilot plant and in industrial scale test runs. The results of pilot plant experiments showed that the measured water split was higher than the measured bypass. This is an indication to that water flow does not entrain the same proportion of all fine particles present in the feed which is advantageous for screening. The experimental design for the industrial test runs was made on the basis of the pilot plant tests. Suitability of the existing models has been checked and accuracy compared. The tests showed that best grade efficiency model was the Rosin-Rammler model. An empirical model for the evaluation of the model parameters as a function of pulp density of the feed and the load of the screen is suggested.

The bainitic Fe-C-Si alloys with optimum content of retained austenite serve as ?containers? for storing of hydrogen. Both the vacancies of fcc lattice and the possibility of forming hydrides of silicon and other alloying elements will be used. The idea is based on our scientific hypothesis. There is the silicon threshold (Si=0,50%) in "Fe-Si" system and Fe-C bainitic alloys, above which it causes self-organized phenomena: sudden increase of hydrogen solubility and amount of retained austenite in the alloy after ??ß transformation, formation of two supersaturated solid solutions <a??r>, "rejuvenation? and its reverse process. Rapprochement of iron atoms when Si=0,50%, causes appearance of new covalent forces where uncompensated electrons of 3d-subshell are involved and it provokes synergetic phenomena. They ?free? silicon atoms from the previous bonds. After that silicon itself becomes a getter of hydrogen using vacancies (14) of 3P2(6)d0(10) subshell and it results in sudden increase of hydrogen solubility in metal. Simultaneously sudden decrease of iron activity takes place. That in its turn ?releases? the carbon. Thus, its redistribution, controlling the bainitic transformation, is hastened. It stipulates for creation of ?brittle bainite" B[a(C,H)+?r(C,H)] after ??ß transformation. While weathering of metal, "rejuvenating", hydrogen diffuses in ?islets? of retained austenite and ?relaxed bainite? (B[(C)+?r(C,H+H)]) is obtained. When heating austenite ?(C,H) is obtained, and after cooling ?brittle bainite? is obtained, etc. Presented scientific hypothesis explains the available experimental facts ("rejuvenation? and its reverse process, graphitization, weldability, forming of flakes, reaching high strength, etc.) in a new manner, as well as, gives real opportunity for creating of new trends in many fields, e.g. iron based HAA. Provisional data having been obtained are encouraging.

In the worst case I have observed, viz., two inches difference in circumference, this difference in hardoess, as observed from the cutting, was more marked than in the other cases. Tires are always grouped in sets by the manufactrlrers fiorn their knowledge of the chenlical camposit,ion of the steel, with an attempt to get those in one set which have the same degree of hardness, so that the wear shall be equal all around ; they succeed pretty well on the average, but I have been noting the exceptioiis. Jacob Reese, PittsHukQh, Pa. : I have been very much interested in the reading and discusion of Dr. Dudley&apos;s paper. As far as it selates to the data of work performed by the rails, and the determination of their physical and chemical properties, I have nothing but commendation of Dr. Dildley to express, as the investigation covered a greater range, and was performed with more care in detail, than any similar work which has come under my notice. But I beg leave to differ with Dr. Dudley in his conclusions. What are the factors of hardness? Are they not carbon, silicon, phosphorus, and manganese? Now it is an untlisputed fact among iuetallurgiml experts that pure carbon and pure iron make the best steel of all degrees of carburieation, and for all purposes. While carbon hardens, it also strengthens the metal, but silicon, phosphorus, and manganese, in hardening, make the metal also brittle, and are injarious in any amount. Carbon should be called a strengthener; and I claim that a steel rail made hard with carbon, with the other three hardeners absent or reduced to a minimum, will carry a greater tonnage than any of Dr. Dudley&apos;s soft rails. But until the basic process is put into operation in this country we cannot expect to produce Bessemer or open-hearth steel without the presence of silicon, phosphorus, and manganese, in consitlerable quautities, aod I greatly donht the possibility of reducing the perceutage of any of them by the prment practice without seriously diminishing the output, and correspondingly increasing the net cost of production; which is an important question, since the increased life of the rail may be more than balanced by its increased cost. I think that the soft rails performed a greater amount of work, because they contained a less amorlllt of silicon, phosphorus, and wangatwe (britlkrcr, if I may so term them), and that carbon does wt reduce the wearing capacity of rails. I believe that a rail made by the baqic process, with silicon, phosphorus, and manganese reduced to a minimum, and containing 0.60 carbon, will be stronger

circumstances, would prefer the steel with which they are now familiar, to a specimen that Mr. Sandberg has described as having broken into seventeen pieces under the wheels. After blowing such low manganese steel, it may be coaxed into a rail, but it is a wonder that it holds together so long as it does, with so great a nornber of minute flaws. I would not in any way depreciate chemistry, but I think it should be kept in its proper sphere. Let the chemist look after the quality of pig metal, and apply common sense in the avoiding of extremes, then the most fastidious railroad cannot find fault with the result. PROFESSOR EGLESTON, New YORK City : It is not my place as an engineer to apologize for the chemists, but as no one seems disposed to do so, and as they have had more than their share of criticism, 1 am glad to say that I believe there are chemists in this Institute whose work and word are just as reliable, arid perhaps even more so, than that of the average engineer. But we ought to make a distinction; there are chemists and chemists. With the ordinary commercial chemist, who looks upon the science as so much merohandise, I have not a particle of sympathy; but with the chemist who looks upon his profession as engineers do upon theirs, I have every sympathy. When matiufactorers and engineers go to a chemist and ask him to make an investigation, and scretv him dowu to the lowest point, turning the equivalent of his brains into cents and mills, they ustially get an exact equivalent in poor work for miserable pay, and no one has or should have any sympathy with them, and the under these conditions has no right to ask for any, and no reason to criticise any work that he may get under such circumstances. But I am disposed to think that the chemists who have been replwented and discussed at this meeting do their work conscientiously, and that it is as reliable as that of almost any profession. I believe, however, that this problem of steel rails is being investigated in a wrong direction. I said so at the Pittsburgh meeting, and I think the discussion of this meeting will prove it to all those who have heard it. I think the chemigt is incapable of solving this problem unlees he goes very far into the domain of physical chemistry, so far that it becomes physics and not chemistry; and that the physicist will be the one on whom we must rely in the future for the elucidation of the subject. The chemist may aid the physicist, but it is my decided opinion that we are looking in the wrong place to get the explanation of the phenomena.

A soldagem a laser do Ti-6Al-4V necessita de cuidados especiais quanto à reatividade do cordão com o ar. A fragilidade da solda é apontada como um dos entraves para o uso da liga em algumas aplicações de engenharia. Neste estudo, foram realizadas soldas em chapas de Ti-6Al-4V em diferentes condições experimentais. Verificou-se que a dureza aumenta com o inverso do logaritmo da velocidade de soldagem. A dureza, embora heterogênea na largura do cordão, é resultado da contaminação com oxigênio da estrutura hexagonal da fase a-Ti e da formação de óxido de titânio. Um sistema otimizado de proteção gasosa, protegendo ambas as superfícies e em particular a região do plasma, foi eficaz para melhorar o comportamento mecânico das juntas. Os resultados obtidos em tração uniaxial mostraram que houve um ganho expressivo nas medidas de tensão e deformação. Portanto, o sistema é indicado e recomendado para materiais com sensibilidade à contaminação atmosférica.

IN analyzing the relation between the orientation of new grains and that of the deformed matrix of axially extended and recrystallized single crystals of face-centered cubic metals, a two-stage rotation process" is generally used where the first rotation is made in order to account for an "adjustment of orientation to the environment of strain."&apos; It has been argued that in spite of the difference of orientation, which may amount to as much as 12" (in a brass),&apos; between the octahedral plane as observed in the parent lattice and in the recrystallized grain, it is believed to be a common plane in the sense that it constituted the nucleus in the parent strained crystal from which the new grain grew.&apos; A possible source of the deviation in orientations of a common pole in the new grain and that of the deformed single crystal matrix from which it has grown may be found in the distribution of strain resulting from the plastic deformation. It might be expected in view of the incongruent nature of shear&apos; that the perfection of the octahedral plane along which glide has occurred is disrupted and that this disruption constitutes the strain from which nuclei of new grains can grow during recrystallization. Evidence for the existence of strain along glide planes was first detected by Taylor" in 1927 and substantiated by Collins and Mathewson&apos; in 1940. In their investigations, however, the deformed single crystalline specimens (aluminum) were cut mechanically along the glide planes followed by mechanical polishing. X-ray exposures (glancing angle) of only 8 min with filtered radiation were used. It was later shown&apos; that this type of surface preparation did not remove with all certainty the mechanically disturbed surface. It was felt that a re-investigation of this phenomenon using more refined techniques might reveal a more correct extent of the strain resulting from the deformation which might correlate the deviation of the common pole of the recrystallized grain with the acting slip plane of the matrix crystal. In accordance with these thoughts, a single crystal of a brass (70/30 nominal composition) M in. in diam x 5 in. long, tapered as in previous experiments,&apos; was extended and carefully documented with respect to elongation and shear. Disks about % in. thick paralle&apos;l to the primary slip planes were cut from the specimen by means of an etch cutter." These disks represented volumes of the specimen which had been extended 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 pct. Copper Ka monochromatic radiation was obtained by reflecting 35,000 v copper radiation from the c-cleavage face of a pentaerythritol crystal. The monochromatic radiation was collimated and led on to the disk set at the proper 0 angle for reflection from the primary (111) planes. The monochromatic beam was aligned in a plane containing the active slip direction. Following a 10 hr exposure at the theoretical Bragg angle, the disk was reset at 0 + 1°, 0 — 1", 0 + 2", 0 — 2", etc., until no Bragg reflection was obtained. The disk was then rotated 90" about its polar axis, and the same X-ray procedure was used. The results are shown in Table I. It may be seen from the results in Table I that the plastic deformation (20 pct elongation) produces fragments of the glide plane which are rotated or tilted as much as 25 " from the normal position on a purely block slip model. In addition to the large variation in 0 angle in the slip direction, there is a variation in 0 as much as 20" in the direction at right angles to the direction of slip, i.e., <110>. In view of the results shown, it may now be argued that the strain distribution finds its origin in the incongruent nature of the slip process.&apos; The use of the two-stage rotation process seems valid in attempting to explain the relation between the orientation of recrystallized grains and the matrix from which they have grown. EUROPE continued to be unsettled, financially, commercially and socially. October opened with Germany in a state of turmoil following the Government&apos;s cessation of passive resistance to the French and Belgians. In many places there were riots with much bloodshed. In Bavaria a military dictator-ship was set up in order to keep peace. In the meanwhile France continued in an uncom-promising position.. Great Britain, having been diplo-matically discredited, disappeared from any prominence in the international picture. Under the constraint of circumstances the policy of deflation in Great. Britain was temporarily abandoned. Perhaps no other course was open, for with declining trade and heavily reduced revenue, and no chance for cutting expenses propor-tionately, a check to deflation comes of its own accord. The effects of this should become manifest in the course of a few months and should appear in the form of an improved margin between the prices for commodities and the wage costs in producing them. About Oct. 20 an effort was made to set up the Rheinland as a separate republic. On Oct. 26 were published communications from Lord Curzon to Secre-tary Hughes and the latter&apos;s reply. In these Lord Curzon drew attention to the gravity of the situation in Europe and expressed the hope that France might listen to renewed suggestions for a general inquiry. Secretary Hughes promised American cooperation, in this, with the reservation that the question of inter-national debts should not enter into the situation. In the latter part of October there were military mutinies and disorders in Greece, which resulted in the reestablishment of martial law by order of Col. Plas-tiras, who is virtually the dictator of Greece. The incipient revolt was promptly crushed.

F. D. Richardson—The authors are to be congratulated on this further contribution to our knowledge of the thermodynamics of the interaction between sulphur and carbon and silicon in liquid iron. As the authors state, the influence of carbon and silicon on the activity coefficient of sulphur in liquid iron is clearly of great importance in the blast furnace, since it must cause a three to fourfold improvement in the partition of sulphur between slag and metal. The influence of increasing temperature in further increasing the activity coefficient of the sulphur in the metal in the blast furnace by increasing the carbon content is also of interest. This effect, however, is probably only part of the reason for the general observation in blast furnace practice, that the sulphur content of the metal is lowered by increasing temperature. Other contributing factors are the lowering of the oxygen potential in the presence of carbon by increasing temperature and the probable increase in the activity coefficient of the lime in the slag for the same reason. The former of these effects, which works via the (CaO) + [S] = (CaS) + [O] equilibrium, might possibly account for a 70 pct improvement in the sulphur partition and the latter might give a further 50 pct improvement. C. Sherman—I would like to compliment the authors on their very careful research. If I may, I would like to show results of calculations on the carbon-sulphur-iron system similar to the ones that were shown in our paper for the silicon-sulphur-iron system. For Fe-S-C ternary system k=PHgs/PH2 x 1/(f1°) (f2°) (%S) where fs = sulphur activity coefficient fs&apos; = fs for Fe-S system of equal pct S f3° = f2/f2 for Fe-S-C ternary system This same analysis has been used on other systems, but the results shown in fie.- 7 are for carbon and silicon. L. S. Darken—I would like to make two brief comments in addition to complimenting the authors on an apparently very precise and accurate investigation. The first is that the present work is in agreement with a calculation by Larsen and myself." Our calculation (much less precise than the present work) was based on: (1) Unpublished work on the sulphur content of molten iron (1.5 pct at 1500°C) in equilibrium with graphite and an iron sulphide slag; (2) the distribution coefficient of sulphur between slag and carbon-free liquid iron. We expressed the result in a form equivalent to log 7. = 0.18 [%C] which gives an activity coefficient (?s.) of sulphur only slightly higher than the authors find and certainly within the precision of the earlier work. My second comment concerns the correlation of the thermodynamic findings with atomistics. A rough pic- ture of the atomic arrangement in the liquid solution is rather easily conceived for this particular liquid solution containing iron, carbon, and sulphur. Carbon has a very much stronger affinity for iron than for sulphur. Hence we may conclude that a sulphur atom will but seldom be adjacent to a carbon atom—since this would be a position of high energy. From the metallic radii of iron and carbon we know that six iron atoms pack neatly around one carbon atom. Thus each carbon atom in retaining this shell of iron atoms (which latter may not be replaced by sulphur on account of the high energy requirement) decreases the available positions for each sulphur atom by six. Hence each atomic percent of carbon decreases the equilibrium sulphur content by 6 pct (of itself). Or, at low concentration each atomic percent of carbon increases the activity coefficient of sulphur by 6 pct. This is in good agreement with the observed increase (6 or 7 pct at low carbon content). It is indeed gratifying to find a case where, by such simple reasoning, quantitative agreement is found between precise data and the modern picture of the atomistics of the metallic state. J. P. Morris (authors&apos; reply)—We would like to point out that there is an error in the equation on p. 322 of the paper. The third equation should read: ½S2 (gas) + H2 (gas) = H2S (gas) The authors wish to thank everyone for the interest they have shown in the paper. In regard to the general observation in blast furnace practice, that the sulphur content of the metal is lowered by increasing the temperature, Dr. Richardson is correct in stating that the cause can be attributed only in part to the increase in activity coefficient of sulphur resulting from the rise in carbon plus silicon content of the metal with rise in temperature. However, this factor is probably an important one. The results of one experiment, performed since this report was written, indicate that at a constant temperature the addition of silicon to a melt saturated with carbon causes an increase in the activity coefficient of sulphur even though the carbon solubility is lowered. In this test, 2.5 pct silicon was added to a melt saturated with carbon and maintained at 1400°C. Although the carbon content dropped from 4.85 to 4.1 pct, the activity coefficient of sulphur was increased by about 20 pct.

Philosopher, essayist, poet and novelist.The minerals industry requires specific technical expertise in mining and mineral process engineering, geoscience, environmental science and social sciences to maintain and operate its current business and to develop future projects. A steady supply of new graduates is essential to replace not only retirees, but also those who left the industry during the recent downturn. The supply of trained graduates is however not instantaneous, and there is a four-year lag from entry into university to graduation. It is essential that this lag in human resource supply and a likely shortage of knowledgeable, qualified talent is taken into account when considering risks to the business of mining. The shortage of skilled professionals has in the past resulted in unsustainable salary expectations and is likely to pose financial and execution risk to new projects. This paper will review some recent statistics of students in training from around the world and explore what action is required to not only sustain the training courses that provide future ready talent to the mining industry, but also ensure that graduates from these courses are equipped to create change and be leaders in the industry. The future prosperity of the industry is dependent on delivering sustainable stakeholder returns through the cycle. This will be achieved by developing capable individuals that can respond to the complex, adaptive challenges facing the industry.*This is an abstract only. "Australia’s largest rail freight network operator, the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC), has selected GE Transportation’s Movement Planner solution as the key technology enabler for its Hunter Valley-focused network control optimization program.ARTC’s Newcastle-based network control, is the nerve center of Hunter Valley rail operations, where locally based train control professionals make thousands of decisions every day to safely support the annual movement of more than 24 kt/h (26,400 stph) of freight, and tens of thousands of coal, freight, grain and passenger trains each year.ARTC plans to transform its train control function by integrating and then building on Movement Planner, an advanced software solution by GE Transportation that provides real-time rail traffic planning and optimization to enable freight to move more efficiently. “The Hunter Valley rail network is one of the busiest and most complex in the country, supporting the largest coal export port in the world,” ARTC managing director and chief executive officer John Fullerton said.“As bulk freight demands grow, rail operators like ARTC and supply chains like the Hunter Valley coal network need to be creative in the way they respond so the Australian economy doesn’t miss out. That’s why we have conducted a worldwide search to find globally proven solutions that will improve our network productivity and efficiency,” Fullerton said.The Movement Planner solution considers multiple factors including train schedules, trafficcontrol systems and train movements relative to each other and then develops an optimized traffic plan for the trains throughout the network. Existing GE customers have benefited from increased visibility of network operations, higher velocity, less dwell times, and improved on-time performance across their networks."

A representative sample of ramming paste from a peripheral seam in an aluminium electrolysis cell was taken in order to develop a process to fabricate ramming paste samples in the laboratory. To this end, paste material was compacted in multilayers in a mould designed to be representative of peripheral seams in Alcoa&apos;s smelters. The density distribution in the representative sample was measured ranging from 1.51-1.76 g/cm3. The density range obtained by the proposed methodology in laboratory is 1.47-1.77 g/cm3. The results demonstrate that the proposed fabrication method adequately duplicates paste density from the cell for both one and two layer compaction. Finally, preliminary results related to the compressive strength and Young&apos;s modulus of laboratory samples were obtained at various temperatures and are presented in this paper.

Rare earth elements (REEs) and their compounds are essential in a multitude of mundane and sophisticated applications such as renewable energy technologies, catalysts, medicine, and defense applications. The global supply deficit could be attributed to the destabilization of REE market that has, as a result, incentivized indigenous production of REEs. Cost-effective and environmentally benign opportunities are being explored for the production of REEs from non-conventional mineral sources including coal and coal by-products to stabilize the supply chain. Coal from Healy coal mine and Wishbone Hill deposits in Alaska have been quantified for REEs and were found to possess elevated total REE concentrations as compared to world average levels (60– 70 ppm). The objective of the study was to concentrate the REEs in the froth phase by froth-flotation of the fine size fraction (< 75 μm). A Box-Behnken design of experiment was employed to ascertain the main and interaction effects of operational parameters on response variable by analyzing 3D response surfaces. Experiments were carried out to maximize REE recovery and concentration by modeling and optimization of three operating variables (frother dosage, pulp density (% solids), and collector dosage). Based on the results, the optimum flotation conditions for maximum recovery at an elevated concentration of REEs in the froth fraction was obtained at 4.2% solids and 32.7 ppm of frother dosage for Healy sample and 10% solids and 37.9 ppm of frother dosage for Wishbone Hill coal sample. The quadratic relationship between the input and response variable was found to be independent of collector dosage suggesting good surface hydrophobicity and floatability of the two coal samples.

Although manganese is a metallic element and is widely dispersed in nature, it never occurs except as a compound in combi¬nation with other elements. Use of such compounds in the production of glass is known to have occurred in early Egypt. The dioxide of manganese was considered a compound of iron until 1774 when C.W. Schule first recognized it as an element. In the same year, a Swedish mining engineer, J.G. Gahn, became the first to isolate manganese. In 1856 development of the Bessemer process of steelmaking gave economic importance to manganese, and later, in 1882 Robert Hadfield discovered the benefits of high manganese steels. GEOLOGY Physical Properties Elemental manganese is a silver-gray metal, resembling iron but harder and more brittle and used primarily in alloys (both ferrous and non-ferrous) and a wide variety of chemical compounds. Some of the physical properties of manganese include: melting point¬1 245°C; boiling point-2 150°C; density at 20°C-7.43 g/cm3; specific heat at 25.2°C-O.115 cal/g; latent heat of fusion-63.7 cal/g; hardness on Mohs scale-5.0; linear coefficient of thermal expansion from 0 to 100°C-22 x 10-6. Mineralogy There are over one hundred minerals that contain manganese. These minerals vary from those with compositions that are pre¬dominantly manganese to those having only minor percentages of manganese. Distribution of Deposits Manganese ore deposits are found worldwide and were formed in various geological environments, but only a rather limited num¬ber of deposits have high grade manganese ore in sufficient quan¬tities to be mined and utilized economically on an industrial scale. It is worth noting the fact that almost all of the significant deposits can be classified into two types of deposits: marine chemical sed¬imentary deposits, and residual (secondary) enrichment deposits. There are, however, a much larger number of geological types but these are not of commercial significance at this time. Sedimentary deposits are the most common and are usually stratiform or lenticular. Manganese minerals were formed by a chemical process during the deposition of marine sediments. They usually contain manganese oxides and carbonate minerals, some¬times interbedded together or with other sedimentary rocks such as limestone or shale. Examples of this type of deposit are the Russian ore bodies of Nikopol and Tchiatoura, as well as the Kalahari deposits in South Africa and deposits of Groote Elyandt in Aus¬tralia. Residual deposits were formed in a different way: by alteration of existing manganese deposits or by concentration of the manga¬nese minerals when other minerals were washed away by weath¬ering or ground water processes. The Nsuta deposit in Ghana, the Amapa deposit in Brazil, the Moanda deposit in Gabon, and nodules in the residual clays of the US Southern Appalachians are examples of this type of geological process. In the case of the Ghana and the Amapa deposits, this is only true for the outer layers of the deposit containing oxide minerals, the inner part being comprised of car¬bonate minerals including manganese carbonate, probably from marine origin. Some sedimentary and residual-type deposits have been metamorphosed, giving rise to small high grade ore bodies. These deposits are regionally metamorphosed, occurring in mar¬bles, slates, quartzites, schists, and gneisses. Some of these deposits, such as the Franklin, NJ, deposit are rich enough to be commercial without secondary enrichment; however, most of the exploitable deposits have been secondarily enriched. Due to the diversity and complexity of manganese deposits, both with respect to deposition and chemistry, a wide range of impurities are almost invariably present in the ores. Table 1 shows that the reserves (i.e., a measured resource that can be economically and legally extracted) are estimated at 814 x 106 tons of contained Mn, which equates to more than a 100 year supply at the current level of production. The reserve base is made up of the marginally economic reserves and sub-economic re¬sources and are some 4.5 times greater than the proven reserves. Also apparent from study of Table I is the fact that some 75% of manganese reserves are found in two countries, the USSR and South Africa. On the other hand, North America (i.e., the United States and Canada) have few significant deposits. "The search for technological innovations in the Civil Construction takes as an objective the reduction of costs and increase of the productivity. However, these technologies demand analysis and studies of parameters of control that provide the quality of the products. With the intention of improve the knowledge on industrialized mortars used in mechanized projection machines, a characterization was done in the state anidro, fresh and hardening of three mortars, being each one of a State, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Bahia. The tenors of water/ mortar was obtained through tests done in built environment, it varied from 0,17 to 0,26. "IntroductionMany bituminous coal-mining companies have inaugurated extensive safety Programs, but the failure to have approved or permissible equipment or safe practice in only one part of a mine has resulted in disaster. The necessity of using only equipment bearing the U. S. Bureau of Mines approval plate is emphasized by the fact that many accidents are the direct result of carelessness on the part of trusted employees using non-permissible equipment. A concrete example is found in the case of an explosion on October 26, 1926, in a mine in the Pittsburgh district, Pennsylvania.Story of the ExplosionAt about 10 o'clock on the night of the explosion an examination was made in No 2 butt left and parallel off 7o. 14 north, and was found to be clear of dangerous accumulations of gas. (See figure). Several hours later a crew of two men brought a self-propelling rock-dusting machine within 50 feet of the face of Po. 2 butt parallel before they examined for gas. The machine operator found an accumulation of explosive gas about 18 inches from the roof. He began to wave his arms thoroughly mixing the gas and air. Undoubtedly a highly explosive mixture was created, and as the men attempted to run the machine back to fresh air an explosion occurred.The helper dropped to the floor and was burned about the face and wrists. The machine operator ran down the entry and was more severely burned about the face, neck, and arms. He later developed pneumonia and died. Both men reached the door in the chute between No. 14 and No. 15 north. A pumper, who had felt the rush of air, found the men and helped them to walk outside."

"Steel slag has been stockpiled in many steel mills due to its poor performance in various construction related applications. Free lime in steel slag has been considered as a major barrier for its utilizations. Composite of steel slag and powders of granulated blast furnace slag have been found an excellent cementitious material for concrete. Portland cement is not required in this kind of concrete. Concretes with various amounts of steel slag and powders of granulated blast furnace slag additions have been investigated. Physical and chemical properties of the products were examined. High performance concrete can be obtained. Field testing of the concrete products was conducted for various applications, including buildings and pavements, and the results demonstrated the soundness of the concrete. Drill cores of field tested concrete, with ages up to 26 years, were examined for the microstructures under SEM.IntroductionIn the steel industry, a major source of the solid waste is steel slag. Steel slag has poor stability in construction applications. This is a major reason that only a small amount of steel slag has been utilized. Some of the reported applications include the land filling/creation in the sea, road base materials, soil treatment for acid neutralization and micronutrients supply, and sintering aid in the sintering plant of the steel industry [1].To solve the stability problem for using steel slag as construction materials, the common approach is to find a method capable of depressing or eliminating the expansion of steel slag. Free lime in steel slag is the major component that causes the expansion. Aging and hydration pretreatment of free lime in steel slag are the well known methods for increasing the steel slag stability. However, there has been limited success on these approaches due to that a large portion of free lime is locked in the grains during the pretreatment process."

The pumice and pumicite review arrived too late for the June issue. Estimated domestic production of pumice and pumicite in 1992 was up compared with 1991, according to US Bureau of Mines statistics. The Bureau estimate of domestic production of 400 kt (440,000 st) for 1991 turned out to be 401 kt (442,000 st) of actual production, the lowest since 1989. In 1992, the estimated the value of pumice and pumicite sold or used in the United States was $11.6 million, up only $200,000 from the 1991 value. There was an increase in the mine, or mill, average price from the five-year low of $11.44/t ($10.37/st) in 1986 to $26.42/t ($23.96/st) in 1992. Estimated tonnage produced in 1992 was 439 kt (484,000 st). Apparent domestic consumption was 642 kt (707,000 st), up 135 kt (149,000 st) from 1991. Imports for consumption were estimated to be 215 kt (237,000 st) last year. Domestic production supplied 68% of the demand in 1992, with net imports supplying the remaining 32%. This compares with domestic production sup¬plying 53% and net imports supplying 47% of the apparent consumption in 1988. Exports were about 900 t/a (1000 stpy) for the period 1984 to 1988. In 1989, exports rose sevenfold to 7 kt (7700 st) and to 20 kt (22,000 st) in 1990. The Bureau of Mines reported that the amount of pumice and pumicite exported in 1992 was 12 kt (13,200 st). It is assumed that these exports were from the Pacific Coast because imports, mainly from Greece, continued to be a market factor on the East Coast and the Gulf Coast States in the United States.
