The grade of mineral resource estimates underpin all major economic considerations of mining prospects. While there are reporting requirements to satisfy when stating a mineral resource estimate, an examination of NI 43-101 style reports suggests that authors believe that there are a number of ways of addressing these requirements. As a reader of these reports, some processes are helpful and others are not so in getting a real appreciation of how realistic is the mineral resource estimate. Critical to the quality of the mineral resource estimate is how realistic is the economic mineral concentration component. In many cases, this parameter is called grade. The industry experiences increased difficulty in achieving realistic grade estimates as the sample grade variability increases. The level of transparency in a mineral resource estimate is very much a function of the competence of the author. An objective presentation of the critical data, such as grade sampling variability can assist a reader in determining if the geology of the mineral concentration is adequately understood and how realistic is mineral resource grade estimate. This paper has considered 75 NI 43-101 style reports released in the past 2 years. The review demonstrates features that were helpful in determining how realistic the mineral resource grade estimate is. If there is insufficient transparency in a report, there is a high probability that the mineral resource grade estimate will not be realistic.

Single crystal, bicrystal, and polycrystal tensile tests of aluminum at 4.2°K, 77°K, and 300°K have been used to examine the role of grain boundaries in the deformation process. Results indicate that a grain boundary may affect the extent and slope of easy glide. The stage II hardening rate, on the other hand, is independent of the presence or absence of grain boundaries. This conclusion allows the size of the region of multiple slip caused by an incompatible grain boundary to be determined. For the size of bicyystal sample used in this study, multiple slip occurs in about half of the cross section. PREVIOUS studies of the stress-strain characteristics of bicrystals of face-centered-cubic metals have been limited to aluminuml-5 at room temperature. Recent results, however, indicate that the stress-strain curves of single crystals of such metals may be separated into at least three stages6 in which different deformation processes are occurring7 provided testing is done at sufficiently low temperatures.' Since for aluminum a well-defined stage II develops only below room temperature, previous studies have not been able to relate effects of grain boundaries to all of the three stages of deformation. It is therefore to be expected that low-temperature deformation of aluminum single crystals and bicrystals should clarify the effects of grain boundaries on the different processes of deformation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Single crystals and bicrystals were grown from the melt by the standard techniqueg with aluminum reported by Alcoa to be 99.993 pct pure. Ridges in the boat were used to guide the grain boundary during growth, assuring that the boundary would bisect the sample.10 The rate of furnace motion during growth was 1.0 cm per hr. During growth zone purification resulted, as evidenced by the ability of the first material to freeze to recrystallize at room temperature following severe deformation. Samples were approximately 4.4 X 6.6 mm in cross section and 103.5 mm in length between grips. Samples were annealed at 635" i 5°C for 40 hr and furnace cooled over a 7-hr period. They were then electropolished in a solution of 5 parts methanol to 1 part perchloric acid at a current density of 15 amp per sq dm for about 30 min at temperatures below 0°C. Tensile testing was performed at 295" (room temperature), 77" (sample in liquid nitrogen), and 4.2"K (sample in liquid helium) on the hard-type machine indicated schematically in Fig. 1. The machine con- sists basically of a tube surrounding a rod; one end of the sample is attached to each member, and the rod is pulled up the tube to extend the sample. The rod is rigidly mounted and is moved vertically by a system described by asinski." The pulling force is measured continuously by an electrical strain gage load cell, and the relative displacement of the tube and rod is also recorded continuously by a soft cantilever beam with electrical strain gages. Maximum stress and strain sensitivities were ±2g per sq mm and * 3-10-5. In all tests the strain rate was approximately 5.10-5 per sec. The thin wires in the tensile apparatus introduce softness, which may be corrected for, however, by measuring load vs displacement with the sample replaced by an elastic member. For loads greater than 15 kg the spring constant is 1.875.106 g per cm. The flexible wires also served to reduce substantially the large shearing forces which may arise in the case of grips having horizontal rigidity.'' As in any gripping system, however, bending moments will arise in the course of deformation by single slip. Engineering stress, s = (load)/(original cross-sectional area), and strain, E = (increase in length)/ (original length), are used for stress-strain curves unless otherwise indicated. Tables list resolved shear stress, T=mo and shear strain ? = dm, where m is the usual Schmid resolved shear stress factor for the primary slip system at the start of deformation. The first group of samples to be described forms an isoaxial set, all of the crystals making up the single crystals or bicrystals having the same tensile axis, the orientation of which is indicated by the cross in Fig. 2. For this orientation the primary slip plane and slip direction make angles of 45 deg with the tensile axis and the Schmid factor m has its maximum possible value of 0.5. Rotations about the tensile axis are indexed by means of an angle 0 between the small-area surface of the samples and the projection of the primary slip direction onto the cross section, as defined in Fig. 3. In single crystals, values of 0 were 0 and 90 deg, while in bicrystals 0 values were (0 deg, 180 deg), (90 deg, 270 deg), and (0 deg, 90 deg) as indicated in Fig. 4.

EACH year we gather in this auditorium to honor the memory of a. distinguished American metallurgist and educator. I cannot bring to you reminiscences of Prof. Henry Marion Howe as other lecturers have done. It was not my good fortune to enjoy the-privilege of studying and working under his direction. As I have reflected on the published works of Professor Howe, it has seemed to me that his mind was trained on the nature of metals and on the mechanism which produced known but unexplained effects. He was interested in controlling and regulating the causes so as to produce specific effects, useful in serving mankind. I recall an afternoon in May, 1925, when, at the invitation of Mrs. Howe, I visited his former home, Green Peace at Bedford Hills, N. Y. The purpose of my visit was to receive at the hands of the widow an engraving of Professor Howe, a reproduction of a painting from life. Mrs. Howe showed me his study. The walls of this large attractive room, brilliantly illuminated by the spring sunshine, were literally covered with the scrolls of honors and of decorations which had been conferred on Professor Howe by governments, academies, universities, societies and institutions the world over. As we walked about the room, she pointed out the significance of each honor and recited a few details of each occasion. I sensed the pride with which Mrs. Howe, then in the late autumn of her life, told me of her husbands' achievements, of his struggles, of his disappointments and of his successes. There was a surprisingly familiar note in the recital to which I was listening. I 'have found the same theme running as a disconnected thread through the written accounts of the lives of most men of science. We then went to the drawing room to chat for a few minutes before I said my farewells. As we seated ourselves, Mrs. Howe turned to me and asked: "Mr. Lucas, what of this great microscope of yours? Cannot it be applied to the study of disease? What a great blessing it would be if it could be directed to relieve the suffering of mankind."

These are generally produced using laboratory techniques which may not accurately reflect the quality and performance of the product in the field.

In the last five years, new iron ore pellet plants have been built with significantly reduced air pollution levels compared to the older generation of plants. European and American pollution controls are more stringent that in China and Brazil. The recent American plants have successfully employed circulating fluidized beds for sulfur control, baghouses for particulate control, activated carbon injection for mercury and a new design of specialized low-NOx burners.

Crandell, President, presiding. PRESIDENT CRANDELL: Gentlemen, the meeting will come to order. I presume most: of you have heard the decision of the Supreme Court in the steel case. The decision was six to three that the President had no legal authority to seize the steel industry, and it is reported that the strike is already under way. Gentlemen, it is both a pleasure and an honor to talk to you who come to the meeting of the Coal Mining Institute, many of you, from long distances. Our program committee has suggested that the president give a 30-minute talk, but you may be at case because I assure you I won't take anywhere near that long, when we will pass to more instructive and enlightening subjects. Another reason for the short talk that I am going to make is that many men in this audience know more about coal mining, specialized subjects, than I do.

I note by the program they have me slated for an opening address, but I am going to defer that, proceed with the remainder of the program, and endeavor to go on schedule and keep matters on schedule as outlined on our program. The first item on the program is the reading of the minutes of the thirty-eighth regular meeting by the Secretary. I might say that it has been customary in the past that we omit the reading of the minutes. If that is not agreeable, we will read them; otherwise, I would like for someone to make a motion that we dispense with the reading of the minutes, inasmuch as they are published in our annual report each year. Almost a decade has elapsed since the problem of fine particles processing was first discussed at the National Science Foundation workshop in Arden House (Somasundaran and Fuerstenau, 1976). Problems involved in processing fines are as enormous now as they were then. We still lose 20 to 50% of mineral values during the processing of many ores. While the problem's magnitude has remained at as high a level as ever, our perspective on the causes for the difficulties, I believe, has changed. While we do not yet see any grand unified solution to all the problems in this area, I do feel that we are beginning to get an understanding of the basic reasons for the behavior of fines. I would like to share my views on the fundamental reasons for the problems we face. They are based essentially on results obtained during the last few years. A decade ago, I presented the reasons shown in the [Fig. 1] as the causes for the difficulties in separating fines. We have seen the same type of information discussed by others during the years since then. I now believe that these are not the only primary causes. Indeed, they do contribute, but there are other major reasons we ought to recognize. Mass certainly would have its effect, but since microorganisms and even ions can be separated from each other using flotation, provided correct conditions are used. I do not believe that fines 10,000 times bigger suffer fundamentally from their smallness or lightness. Similarly, the surface energy increase cannot be as important a fundamental factor since, theoretically, we should not see significant changes in surface energy until we get down to particles a hundred times finer than we are concerned with. Increase in surface areas, again, cannot be a primary problem except for an increase in reagent consumption. What possibly could be the reasons? I have added these three items to the list in [Fig. 1]: morphology, mineralogy, and surface chemical composition. Differences that I believe are partly responsible for the behavior of mineral fines are those due to alterations in morphology or mineralogy and surface chemical composition with decrease in size.

PrePatory Note.—The first part of this paper was sent to me by Mr. Emrich nearly nine months ago; and I held it, waiting for the second part, which he had promised to forward soon, so that I might submit the whole to some of his former professional associates, and advise him of their criticisms and suggestions before off'ering his work to the Institute. But, five days before the second part reached me, I received by telegraph the news of Mr. Emrich's sudden death. The paper has therefore not had the benefit of such a revision by the author as might have made it ill some respects clearer and more cornplete. Nevertheless, I believe that experts in the branch of metallurgy with which it deals will find it both original and suggestive.—A. Eilers. I. Partial ReFining iN the ANode-Furnace. During my connection with one of the large New Jersey copper-refineries, and probably before that period, from 15 to 30 per cent. of the copper-bullion received was the very foul, leady blister-copper produced from lead blast-furuace matte. It had been customary to mix a small part of this blister with each charge of purer pig-copper, in the effort to dilute it as much as possible before casting into anodes; but tank-house conditions were such that I was led to try making entire furnace-charges of this blister, and refining it as much as possible in the furnace—afterwards casting to anodes and refining elec-trolytically, in tanks and solution separate from the main bulk of the purer copper. In making this experiment, notes were made, for several furnace-charges, of everything thought to have a bearing on the question, and some interesting facts were brought out, both in the furnace-working and afterwards in the tanks.

Thirty years ago, when I stood on the cliff of red fossil iron-ore, on Red mountain, Jefferson county, Ala., I asked what were the geological relations of this remarkable deposit. In reply I was told that it was a limestone, colored and saturated by some unknown but wholly external influences, and that at a reasonable distance from the surface the color would disappear. I could find no satisfactory explanation, either of the nature of this wonderful external permeating influence, or of the cause of such a ferrous impregnation selecting this one particular bed of limestone, to the exclusion of the higher and lower beds of the same material which are not even stained. I. The Present Theory. Referring to this subject, Dana says :' "The clays, clayey sandstones and limestones of the Clinton epoch, through New York and the Appalachians, show that the mud-flats and sand-banks, and hence the shallow seas of the coast region, still continued.... The beds of argillaceous iron-ore, which spread so widely through New York and some of the other States, west and south, could not have been formed in an open sea; for clayey iron-deposits do not accumulate under such circumstances. They are proof of extensive marshes, and, therefore, of land near the sea-level. The fragments of crinoids and shells found in these beds are evidence that they were, in part at least, salt-water marshes, and that the tides sometimes reached them." At first, this explanation seemed satisfactory, but the more I studied the ore the less satisfying the explanation became. 1. Manganese ore bodies of Banswara Mn belt were classified into stratiform and stratabound types, based on their mode of occurrence, distribution, and their chemical characters. These ore bodies generally composed of braunite, pyrolusite, cryptomelane/ psilomelane, wad, etc. The stratiform-type Mn ore bodies are conformable with the associated host rocks (Mn phyllite, etc.) and occurred in the form of layers, bands, etc., which are variable in their shape and size. These ore bodies are also strongly folded with the enclosing host rocks. The others, which are stratabound-type Mn ore bodies, also showed an intimate association with the associated host rocks. These types of ore bodies occurred in thin layers, pockets, lenses, stringers, etc. The classified ore bodies are confined with Kalinjara formation of Aravalli Supergroup of Paleoproterozoic age. The ore bodies are structurally controlled and well associated with phyllite, schist, limestone, quartzite, etc. The stratiform-type ore bodies constitute a marginal to low Mn grade and are also characterized by lower Mn content (26.19–39.24%) along with the Mn/Fe ratio of 7.16–12.23, while the stratabound-type Mn ore bodies are rich in Mn (35.92–49.64%) along with the higher Mn/Fe ratio of 14.15–23.97. However, the poor Mn grade along with high siliceous impurities of Banswara Mn deposits is subjected to them for intermittent mining activities in the past and, consequently, did not attract the scientific and industrial community for the evaluation of these resources. Therefore, the authors attempted this study in a scientific and systematic manner (mode of occurrence/distribution and possible methods for evaluation/exploration) to evaluate the potential of existed and newer Mn deposit resources in the Banswara Mn belt. The whole findings would be very much helpful for exploration/ mining geologist along with other concerned, to completely evaluate these Mn deposits in the future.

I FEAR most of the Institute members are already weary of the perennial controversy about the apex law. I feel that way about it myself now, though I have been guilty of considerable contribution to the discussion in the past. The discussion does not seem to perceptibly influence previously held views and I would not again break into print on the subject but for the urgent invitation of the Chairman of our, Law Committee. This energetic and able member has firmly determined to secure a revision of the mining law and among other things to eliminate the so-called apex provision from the U. S. mining statutes. He is, however, fair about it and has invited me to make "the strongest possible argument in its favor." I am suspicious that he is acting on the psychological principle that it is usually easier to convince an audience against a cause vigorously but unsuccessfully defended than against one wholly mute. Nevertheless, I realize that personally he wishes me no harm, much as he hates the apex law, and so am willing that the Institute have whatever benefit may accrue from my taking up again the unpopular side of the discussion. I say this because the attitude of a large part of our "articulate" membership seems irreconcilably hostile; their minds are made up; favorable consideration is foreclosed; and they become impatient and even sarcastic at any attempt to elucidate a favorable view of the apex law. The exact question for discussion at the present time is not whether on abstract, or any other considerations, the apex law is the best possible rule, but the very different proposition whether, after nearly 50 years of statutory life and much longer as a practically universal miners' custom, it is now just and expedient to repeal the apex law.

Solar Salt, Lunar Ambitions I Bauerti The title of this paper is `Solar Salt, Lunar Ambitions'. It is largely the result of a lack of imagination and a tight deadline. I was seeking a catchy title to convey the image of being 'here' and wanting to get `there', with `there' being a long way away and our being held 'here' by powerful gravitational forces. I tried `Solar Salt, Lunar Landings', but that implied we had already reached `there' when, on reflection, we had not. A colleague suggested 'Solar Salt, Luna Park' which is a fun park in Sydney and, I must admit, there was appeal in the image of having embarked on a wild roller coaster ride with stomach-wrenching twists and turns and the only reward being a pair of sweaty palms, and a feeling of nausea. That's sometimes how it feels when you launch into change. In the end I settled for the more sedate `Lunar Ambitions'. It contained that suggestion of hope and continual striving which are central to the idea of best practice. I will discuss our experiences in this area shortly, but I would firstly like to provide some background to our business. The salt industry is steeped in history and tradition. As one learned commentator observed, common salt is 'a substance seemingly too ordinary to think about, yet it is the oldest of man's raw materials and the basis of some of his newest inventions' (Multhauf, 1978). From ancient times, salt was recognised as a key necessity of life and it has played a role in the rise and fall of governments throughout history. The Romans recognised its importance when they gave their soldiers money regularly to purchase salt, hence our modern word 'salary'. Today, while culinary use remains important, the main consumer of salt is the chemical industry (Figure 1).

"Saponite is a valuable marketable product widely used foundry, metallurgy and construction, in the chemical, food and consumer goods industries, in medicine, and in agriculture.The feasibility of producing of high-quality construction materials with enhanced physical-chemical and decorative characteristics from saponite-containing products has been given a scientific basis and experimentally validated. The compressive strength of the samples in the sintering temperature range of 800-1000 ?? varied between 35 and 80.9 MPa; the bending strength 8 and 26.7 MPa, which is superior to the high-grade ceramic bricks of the M-300 brand. It has been established that the saponite-containing product obtained using the electrochemical separation of process water has a high sorption capacitance relatively the heavy-metal ions such as nickel and copper (40.7 and 99.8 mg/g, respectively). As a result of sintering at 750 ?? the sorption capacity of the sorbent for the nickel and copper ions increased to 194.2 and 212.8. Using the XRD and SEM with energy-dispersive spectroscopy studies, we diagnosed the metal-containing phases and validated the metal sorption mechanism.This study opens up the possibility of practical realization of the saponite-containing product as high-quality building materials and heavy-metal sorbents while addressing the issue of process water treatment. INTRODUCTION The Lomonosov deposit of the Archangelsk diamondiferous province accommodates 10 kimberlite pipes. The anticipated volume of diamond-bearing ore and dump rock to be removed before reaching the open-pit mining limit is 300 mln t (Karpenko, 2009; Bezborodov, etal. 2003). Rock in the deposit is almost completely displaced by clay minerals, predominantly saponite, amounting to 90% in the vent facies (Karpenko, 2009)."

ZAY JEFFRIES (author's reply to discussion *).-Messrs. Merica's and Humfrey's criticisms of some of my conclusions are rendered in the true scientific spirit by means of which differences of opinion are gradually smoothed out and all participants are benefited. It is true that the statement of generalizations on such a complex subject is hazardous, but I shall endeavor to point out the explanations for the discrepancies noted. Owing to the fact that I am now submitting a long paper on the same general subject to the Institute, my present remarks will be brief. Dr. Meric&s Assumptions' I agree with No. 1 and No. 2, with the modification that the A (amorphous) metal between grains of annealed metal has substantially the same properties as that at slip planes in deformed metal, but the two have different arrangements with reference to C (crystalline) metal and they may be in different conditions as regards internal stress, thickness, and nature of contact with C metal. Assumption 3.-I believe Fig. 1 is wrong. I know of no evidence to substantiate the curves. I believe cc (elongation of C phase) = 0 (approximately) at all temperatures and ?A (elongation of A phase) has finite values at elevated temperatures only; but these play no important direct role in the ordinary deformation of metals at low temperatures. I believe Ec (elastic limit of C phase) = Tc (tensile strength of C phase) because as soon as C metal begins to deform permanently it would rupture were it not for the A metal generated by its breakdown. We know that Ec = Tc in brittle crystals and a crystal cannot be permanently deformed without generation of A metal. Therefore Dr. Merica's

IN October last, I was call upon to examine a copper deposit in the South Mountain, near the Pennsylvania and Maryland boundary. The specimens shown me contained oxides and carbonates with native copper, and were similar to some that had been described to me some years ago as existing at the Luray Gap in Virginia. An examination of Rogers's Report on the Geology of Pennsylvania, led me to expect to see his so-called "Primal Formation," such as exists throughout the southeastern district of the State. I was therefore much surprised on arriving at the summit of the Western Maryland Railroad to find myself on familiar ground. Instead of the "Primal" as I had known it in Southeastern Pennsylvania, I soon decided that the rocks were identical with the "Lake Superior Copper Formation." My visit was unfortunately a short one, part of two days, and in that time I had to pass over a good many miles, but I saw sufficient to convince me that instead of the Lake Superior Copper Formation being a local geological feature, it would have to be considered as a widely extended series of rocks. I was unable to even approximately estimate the thickness either of the trap zone or other members, schists and slates, of the series. In an article on the Copper Range of Michigan, prepared by C. P. Williams and myself in 1862, and published, in vol. xxxiv of the American Journal of Arts and Sciences, we endeavored to divide that range into zones, according to the character of the traps.
