High-grade coal is locked in the shaft protective pillars at 900 m below surface in the Czech part of Upper Silesian Coal Basin. To optimise recovery of coal from the larger size shaft protective pillar, room and pillar (called bord and pillar in India) is trialled to further develop these on smaller pillars. This development followed a constant gallery width of 5.2 m and 3.5 m height. The monitored pillar size in the first developed panel varied from 860 m2 to 1225 m2 of area. The stability of these pillars (i.e., natural supports) at this depth of cover is observed to be a vital issue to control ground movement and safety of the surface structures. A simple calculation of safety factor revealed that application of an empirical method for estimating size and shape of the pillar is inappropriate due to complex geo-mining conditions of the site. Accordingly, geo-technical instruments are installed in the panel for monitoring the stability of the diamond shaped pillar at different stages of the development. Extensive monitoring of the pillar behaviour by these instruments provided an important set of data for such optimum recovery. An established process of simulation-based pillar strength estimation is often used by the mining industry, but calibration is generally done with the help of empirical formulation. However, for the deep-seated pillar, the strength suggested by the existing empirical formulations (except the CMRI formula) is found to be much different from the instrument observations. Using a study conducted at Czech hard coal mines, an attempt is made to develop a strain-softening-based numerical modelling approach to assess pillar performance at deeper cover. The recorded value and nature of the pillar spalling in the field along with the CMRI formula are used to calibrate the developed simulation approach. An assessment of the stability of the developed pillars using simulated models did not indicate any collapse of the natural supports. This paper briefly presents difficulties in pillar design at great depth of cover and field and simulation results of pillar strength estimation in Czech hard coal mines.

THE comprehensive study of the copper-manganese-zinc alloy system in the Bureau of Mines Laboratories has so far been principally concerned with alloys that lie within the alpha solid solution field of the system. Two regions, one centering about 65 per cent copper, 10 manganese and 25 zinc, and the other centering about 70 per cent copper, 20 manganese, 10 zinc, have been carefully examined.1,2 These have indicated that when the alloys are made with electrolytic manganese considerable amounts may be readily introduced and that the strength and hardness are increased without excessive losses in ductility. In the course of the work of establishing the limits of the alpha solid solution range,3 enough of certain of the alloys was prepared to permit determination of their physical properties at a future date. The 60 per cent copper alloys concerned here are part of that series. They cross through the alpha field and into the adjacent alpha plus beta and alpha plus X fields, and are of interest because they offer some information on the effects of manganese on alloys lying in these fields. COMPOSITION AND FABRICATION OF ALLOYS The chemical composition of the alloys involved is given in Table I. They were intended to contain 60 per cent copper with manganese increasing from 5 to 25 per cent in 5 per cent steps and zinc decreasing [ ] from 35 to 15 per cent. The analyses are so close to the intended composition that the alloys will be referred to hereafter by their nominal compositions. They were finished into sheet by cold-rolling and intermediate annealing procedures calculated to produce sheet 1/16 in. thick, cold-reduced by 20, 40, 60, and 80 per cent in thickness. Physical properties were determined on standard flat tensile specimens with 4-in. gauge length, although the test gauge section used was 2 in. The properties were obtained on cold-worked material and on material annealed at temperatures ranging from l00° to 1500°F. after 60 per cent cold reduction. Since an annealing temperature of 1200°F.

MATERIAL used throughout this investigation was high-purity aluminum (99.998 pct). The 1/2-in. cubes were cut out of a cold-rolled slab and annealed at 550°C for 1 hr before deformation. The single crystal specimen was 1 in. in diam x 0.33 in. thick, cut from a cylindrical crystal produced by cooling at about 55°C per hr in a furnace which had a convenient gradient of about 10°C in every 4.5 in. vertical crucible length. Specific data on the ten specimens studied are summarized in table I. Three types of deformation were employed: (I) compression in a hand-operated hydraulic press; (2) impact with a 7-lb sledge hammer; and (3) rolling, using a wedge-shaped specimen' to obtain a gradient of deformations varying from 0 to 50 pct along the length of the wedge. Specimens were either deformed at room temperature, or first cooled in a freezing mixture of dry ice and ether at a temperature of —72°C and then deformed between steel blocks cooled with dry ice. The specimens deformed at the low temperature were ground and polished through 000 emery paper and wheels impregnated with alundum and alumina No. 1. During this entire procedure the specimens were dipped frequently in the freezing mixture of dry ice and ether in order to maintain constantly a frosty surface as insurance against overheating. All specimens were given a final electrolytic polish, using two different electrolytes* to insure that the surface effects observed were not char- acteristic of the polishing technique. With both electrolytes, the annealed specimens gave even surfaces with good polish. Several standard etchants were tried without success. The best results were obtained with an immersion etchant, developed in this connection, containing: hydrofluoric acid, 4 parts; nitric acid, 1 part; glycerine, 3 parts. Discussion of Results Typical strain markings have been observed within deformation bands, as shown in figs. 1, 2, and 4. By stereographic plotting of metallographic measurements, the strain markings within a deformation band in a single crystal of aluminum deformed by compression were found to be traces of (111) planes within a maximum scatter of 6". The edges of the deformation band were found to be traces of the (100) planes also within the maximum scatter of 6" (in agreement with previous workers). At 30 pct deformation, this scatter was considered quite normal because of the fragmentation and rotation of the crystal. This solution, based on the traces on one plane of observation is not unique, but as the planes were observed to be those normally and logically to be expected, further work in this regard was not felt to be necessary. The study of strain markings in a wedge-shaped specimen, rolled to obtain a gradient of deformation from 0 to 50 pct, revealed prominent strain markings at 25 pct reduction in thickness (fig.5). Faint and weak strain markings were visually observable up to a minimum reduction in thickness of about 12 pct. Since strain markings have been observed in other face-centered cubic metals after much smaller deformations;1, 2 and since the rate of recovery in aluminum is high, it is believed that, at lower deformations, self-recovery removes the localized strains at the slip interfaces, thus removing the source of the etching effects that give rise to strain markings. At high magnifications, strain markings sometimes seem to appear as very thin, light-banded re-gions bounded by a pair of dark edges. This so-

CAST-STEEL runners, while not interesting from a commercial standpoint, furnish valuable material for microscopic study. Foley1 found not only the usual ingot structure, but zones of Widmannstattian structure, which he explains as due to differential crystallization. The writer, in examining nickel-steel runners, found a type of pro-eutectoid ferrite that is unusual and most probably new. The runner in question was 8.75 cm. (3.5 in.) in diameter and analyzed at its center 2.69 per cent, nickel and 0.350 per cent. carbon and at its edge 2.62 per cent. nickel and 0.359 per cent. carbon. The macrostructure, which is the usual type, is shown in Figs. 1 and 2, which are a cross-section and the longitudinal surface, respectively. Slight segregation of ferrite can be seen near the center of the segment and at other points near the edges of polyhedral grains. Stead's reagent brings out the dendritic structure within the grains as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. This texture is what would be expected of such a steel. Figs. 5 to 10 show the peculiar swirls of pro-eutectoid ferrite, the finding of which prompted this paper. These swirls, or eddies, if such a term can be applied, occur in all parts of- the runner and in all parts of the individual grains. I he tipper left-hand figure shows this ferrite at a grain boundary; the middle left-hand figure shows the inner portion of a grain; and the lower left-hand figure shows these swirls at the edge of a grain which is also the outer edge of the runner. Straight-lined ferrite associated with swirls is found in the areas of Figs. 11 and 12. The texture of the carbon-bearing constituent of the runner is shown to- some extent in Fig. 12, the pearlite being very fine or sorbitic. Higher magnification does not bring out any new features either in the peculiar ferrite or in the pearlite. Figs. 13 and 14, at 240 diameters, show the curved and straight-lined ferrite.

The Bureau of Mines conducted experiments using bench-scale apparatus to explore the effect of large changes in process variables on the yield and composition of the gases produced by passing 800° C steam through a fixed bed of Pittsburgh seam (hvab) coal. The total yield of combustible gases increased throughout the given range for the following variables: Superficial steam velocity increasing from 0.02 to 0.12 fps, pressure increasing from 1,000 to 6,000 psig, residence time increasing from 0 to 60 minutes, and temperature increasing from 800° to 900° C; however, a greater increase in the yield of hydrogen in comparison with the increase in yield of methane reduced the gross heating value of the gas to around 470 Btu per scf at conditions giving the maximum yield. Pressures of 1,000, 3,000, and 6,000 psig at 0.09 fps steam velocity, 800° C, and 60 minutes residence time, respectively, produced methane yields of 20, 24, and 22 percent, based on maf coal, with the gross heating value of the CO2-free gas decreasing from 552 to 520 and to 470 Btu per scf. Methane concentrations in the CO2-free gas were 26, 22, and 14 percent, respectively. Based on the gross heating value of the coal, the percentage of the heating value recovered in the gas was 60, 71, and 87 percent, respectively. The use of tungsten sulfide as a catalyst for converting carbon oxides and hydrogen into methane was explored briefly using both a sulfur-free gas rich in methane and a sulfur-bearing synthesis gas (3H2:1CO).

"The Red Rose Mine is in the Rocher Deboule Range, 8 miles south of Hazelton. The mill camp (elevation 4,000 feet) is on Red Rose Creek, 11 miles by road from Skeena Crossing. The mine camp is one mile northeast and 1,600 feet above the mill camp on a spur of Red Rose Peak.The Red Rose mine was described in the Jubilee Volume, Structural Geology of Canadian Ore Deposits (Davis, pp. 129-131), but regional geology and mine development have progressed to a stage at which a more complete description is possible.The property was first located in 1912, and for the next 7 years was prospected actively for gold and copper on the southern extension of the Red Rose shear. Scheelite was first discovered in the vein in the northern part of the shear in 1923. The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited optioned the property in 1939, and after a drilling program in 1940 the present mine development was initiated in the vein in the northern part of the shear. A 75-ton-per-day mill started operating early in 1942 and continued until 1943. The property was inactive until 195 l, when Western Tungsten Copper Mines Limited leased the property from The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited. A mill, which later was enlarged to 140 tons per day, started operations at the end of 1951. The mine and mill were closed in December, 1954.The mine has twelve levels and sub1evels, and most of the workings are in the plane of the vein (see Figure 2a). The level interval is not constant, but between the lower four levels is 87 feet (100 feet in the plane of the vein). Access is provided by four adits; the 800 (elevation 5,659 feet), 600 (5,920 feet), 300 (6, 133 feet) and 200 levels (6,237 feet). The 600 level is the main haulage, and from it the ore is transported to the mill by aerial tram. From this level an inclined shaft extends in the vein to the lowest level (I, 100)."

Rock damage around underground excavations has been an important hazard in mines and tunnels. Rock dilation generates buckling that needs to be contained before it causes damage to equipment or safety concerns to mine workers. In seismically active mines, rockburst occurrence has been widely recognized as one of the most important hazards in deep mines and tunnels. While there is a wide range of cases where rockburst hazard can be mitigated through dedicated excavation sequences, reentry procedures or exclusion zones, there are still many situations where large unexpected rockbursting may occur, relying only on rock support as the last mitigation measure to prevent production and safety losses. Considering the previous situations, surface support as mesh, plays a major role containing the failed/ejected rock and providing a safe working environment to the underground operations. While there have been considerable achievements in improving mesh resistance, with more than 26Kj/m2 of energy dissipation capacity, there is still a lack of research in the overlapping mechanism and load transfer between contiguous mesh elements. This paper presents the state of the art in static and dynamic analysis of welded and rolled mesh overlaps, based on experimentation carried on by Geobrugg in their Research Center, leaving clearly established that the difference in meshes is not only in levels of energy absorption, but also concluding that in the case of high resistance rolled meshes overlapping is not necessary and the transmission of stresses can be fully guaranteed by using suitable connecting elements. All these characteristics, supported by operational advantages as light weight and mechanized mesh installation, provides a considerable improvement in safety and productivity, improving the economic value of the project

The fibrogenic effects of silica in experimental animals and humans has been extensively studied (I 7, 20). However, the pathogenesis and molecular mechanisms underlying lung injury and fibrosis resulting from silica exposure remain to be elucidated. It is well-documented that silica can stimulate monocyte-macrophage lineage cells to produce cytokines and growth factors, including interleukin-I (IL- I) (20), tumor necrosis factor-ex (TNF-cx) (I 7), insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-1) (4), and transforming growth factor-P (TGF-P) (24). Consequently, it has been suggested that the fibrogenic effect of silica may be mediated by cytokines in the fater stages of silicosis. During the early phase of interaction between silica and the pulmonary alveolar macrophage, several direct and indirect lines of evidence suggest that reactive oxygen intermediates (ROI) may play a pivotal role in silica- induced tissue damage (2I, 22). One of the most important components of and contributors to ROI is nitric oxide (NO) produced from L-arginine and molecular oxygen under the catalytic influence of NO synthase (NOS) (I 9). At present, at least three NOS genes have been cloned: a constitutive neuron NOS, a constitutive endothelial cell NOS and an inducible NOS (iNOS) (16). A number of factors have been shown to differentially induce iNOS gene expression in different cell lines including bacterial cell products and foreign antigens. During inflammation, NO is a double-edged sword in terms of the host immune defense mechanisms and the physiologic response to an inflammatory insult. The macrophage is one of the major cellular sources of NO. During the early phase of acute inflammation, NO produced from the macrophage appears to facilitate the clearance of pathogens and promotes a local relaxation effect on the microcirculation of vascular smooth muscle. When the production of NO is left unattenuated, especially under oxidative stress, direct cytotoxic effects of NO can emerge through the formation of peroxynitrite as a result of a reaction between NO and superoxide (2).

Otis, Chairman of the Local Committee of Arrangements, who welcomed the Institute to Cleveland, and introduced Col. Charles Whittlesey, who ad¬dressed the Institute briefly on the coal deposits of Ohio. Col. Whittlesey described the situation and character of the coal-beds of the State, and gave a short history of the use of raw coal in the manufacture of pig-iron, and spoke of the excellent quality of metal produced. The aid that a body of scientific miners and metal¬lurgists were capable of giving in the development of coal and other mineral resources was dwelt upon, and the hope expressed that the visit of the Institute to Cleveland might be profitable as, well to its members as to the citizens of the State. The President, Mr. A. L. Holley, responded to the welcome of Mr. Otis and of Col. Whittlesey, and read an introductory address on Some Pressing Needs in the Iron and Steel Manufacture. Within a couple of years I have received many inquiries in regard to the manganese-mines of Brazil. These inquiries were doubtless directed to mc because I had lived and traveled in Brazil for more than eight years, and was therefore supposed to be pretty well acquainted with its geology and mineral resources. Somewhat to my chagrin, I not only knew nothing of manganese-mines in that country, but I had never before heard of the mineral having been found here in quantity, and I did not even know in what State the mines were located. The present summer found me in Brazil again, trying to finish up some of my early geological investigations along the northeast coast, and I have used the occasion to find out something about the manganese-deposits. Very little is known of these mines, even in Brazil. While at Pernambuco I was told that they were in the distant interior of the State of Bahia. In August I reached Bahia, and there I found out, concerning the mines and their geology, enough to be worth telling for the benefit of those interested in the mining or using of this mineral. Thus far, all the manganese-ore shipped from this State has come from two mines, the principal one of which is known as the Pedras Pretas mine. This was the first mine opened, is the best developed, and was the original discovery; the second one is on an adjoining tract, and the general geology and natural conditions are about the same in both. The Pedras Pretas mine is on the Nazareth-Amargosa railway, twenty-six kilometers west of the town of Nazareth, which is on tide-water, at the head of navigation, and is reached from the city of Bahia by a small side-wheel steamer that runs across the bay of Bahia and up the Rio Jaguaripe

Simple methods can be used for the determination of the residual stresses in thin walled tubing if the stresses consist of high tensile stresses at the one surface and high compressive stresses at the other surface. Such a stress distribution is approximated in sunk tubing and in deep-drawn shells. It is possible to cut sections from such articles in such a manner that a major part of the residual stress is relieved by a bending of the Part that is separated from the adjacent metal. The circumferential stress is evaluated from the change in diameter D, occurring on splitting a length of tubing (Fig. Ib) or from deflection resulting from the cutting out of a circumferential tongue (Fig. Ia) .6 The bending moment M released by such a flexure is. Sin embargo los trabajos geológicos y algunos sondajes realizados recientemente en el proyecto, han permitido reconocer un cuerpo mineralizado de oro-cobre (0.40 g/t Au y 0.054% Cu), con ensamble de alteración clorita-caolín-paragonita-muscovita, relacionado a un intrusivo dioritico; observándose una gradación de los ensambles de alteración (arcillas a micas blancas), es decir de una alteración argílica intermedia (dickita-illita) a una alteración filica (paragonita-muscovita), lo cual evidencia una transición de un sistema de alta sulfuración a un sistema pórfido.

Cerro Vanguardia SA (CVSA), property of AngloGold Ashanti, mines gold and silver from a system of vetiforme orebodies located in the south of the Argentine Patagonia, in the Province of Santa Cruz.Surface mining techniques are applied to develop a series of narrow pits with an average waste to ore ratio of 26:1. This quite unique constraint brings into focus the need to maximise inter-ramp and final wall angles, leading to a strong need to optimise wall control drilling and blasting in order to reduce back-break damage to an absolute minimum.The paper describes a program of applied investigation and design modification implemented during?2008?and?2009 in?two?separate pits of Cerro Vanguardia. Three distinct yet complementary damage mechanisms were identified and observed during the field components of the work; vibration induced strain fracturing, surface cratering around blasthole collars and quasi-static loading and unloading of the surrounding rock mass as a consequence of poorly controlled confinement.With these mechanisms identified, a measurement, modelling and modification campaign was conducted in order to reduce the incidence of each source of damage. Interactive design analysis and modelling, near-field vibration measurement, video capture and the application of electronic initiation technology were supported by seed wave modelling and topographic evaluation of the achieved results.Results point to the usefulness of simulation techniques for determining optimum delay timing to reduce vibration impact, while the visualisation of explosive energy distribution produced by drilling and explosive loading decisions assists in reducing the probability of over-confinement.This paper presents relevant aspects of the two fieldwork campaigns:1) describing the application of the techniques, and2) summarising the results obtained.

Nauru Phosphate, which is one of the world's highest grade deposits discovered to date, contributed in 1969, 2.2 million tons of the total world production of 77.7 million tons. Phosphate production, which is the major source of revenue for the island nation, is carried out by the Nauru Phosphate Corporation, headed by a Government appointed Board of Directors. The complete mining operation, including ship loading techniques, is discussed along with proposals at present being investigated to upgrade the Quality of the product.

DEADWOOD and the Black Hills were familiar names to me from childhood, for. I had an uncle who was among the earliest eastern investors there and I used to hear of the Uncle Sam mine and its rich ore back in the eighties. The spring of my junior year at college, in 1893, brought me an offer of summer work at the Deadwood & Delaware smelter, in Deadwood, and full of the thrill of the long journey from New Jersey, I went out as chemist and stayed four months. Within a week or two of my arrival, I went through the tragic experience of seeing an associate drink cyanide by mistake and die within a few moments. I shall never forget the horror of feeling that my lack of knowledge of an antidote might be responsible for his death, but I found later that the solution he drank was so strong that nothing could have been done. A year after graduation, when I had settled down to chemical research work in New York, an offer came to go back to the smelter in Deadwood, and within a few days I was again tramping down "the Gulch" with my lunch bucket and putting in the standard assay office shift of that day, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., with a half-day off on Sundays. During my absence East, the D. & D. smelter had been changed from a pyritic smelter, using native pyrite, and Homestake concentrate to matte the siliceous gold ores, into a copper-matting smelter using copper ores brought from Butte, over the newly-completed Burlington rail-road. The work was interesting, and the laboratory offered many opportunities for making improvements. I remember also undertaking experiments at home on a new method of gold precipitation for the chlorination process and leasing a mine in Strawberry Gulch that promised great things, but soon petered out.

The Avebury nickel mine in Western Tasmania is a disseminated nickel sulfide deposit hosted in intensely metasomatised Cambrian ultramafic resulting from later Devonian granite related hydrothermal activity.Variable metasomatism of the ultramafic has formed two distinct gangue mineral assemblages. Less metasomatised ultramafic is comprised of fine grained black antigorite with minor disseminated chromite, magnetite and pentlandite. Intensely metasomatised ultramafic is altered to a pale grey or green, coarsely crystalline tremolite/actinolite and diopside assemblage with minor magnetite, chromite and sulfides. Both gangue mineral assemblages are frequently intermixed in ore grade mineralisation.The bimodal gangue of either serpentinite or metasomatised ultramafic presents challenges to drilling, mining, resource estimation and mineral processing as they possess very different physical properties. Mineralised serpentinite has a mean bulk density of 2.8 g/cc and the ultramafic skarn a mean bulk density of 3.2 g/cc. Physically, the ultramafic skarn is hard to break percussively creating difficulties in the crushing circuit and reducing mine development rates. However, it is non-abrasive and grinds readily, resulting in increased diamond drilling rates and increased mill throughput. Conversely the serpentinite gangue is softer and breaks easily resulting in accelerated development rates and crushing circuit throughput. However, its fibrous nature reduces grinding efficiency, increasing bond work indices and reducing diamond drilling rates.Predicting the ratio of serpentinised to metasomatised ultramafic is possible through use of the resource blockmodel, assisting mine scheduling, predicting mill throughput rates, energy consumption and grade control drilling rates.CITATION:Callaghan, T J, 2017. Owing to an upsurge in export earnings. Cameroon made substantial economic Progress in 1978 and 1979. With a real growth estimated at 6%, the gross domestic product (GDP) for 1979 surpassed $5 billion.2 Crude petroleum production was providing a new potential in 1978 and 1979 for achieving national self-sufficiency. Among other benefits, crude petroleum exports were helping to offset the escalating costs of refined petroleum imports and to reduce the 14% to 17% annual rate of inflation. Over the 4 years prior to 1978, Cameroon's petroleum imports increased by 12.1% in volume annually, while the import cost increased by 24.5% annually to about $105 million. Total export earnings for 1978 were $805 million,3 to which crude petroleum contributed $25.3 million and crude aluminum product exports contributed $25.9 million. Petroleum exports had increased to about $240 million in 1979 and were in third place after coffee and cacao. Total imports for 1978 were valued at nearly $1 billion. The volume of petroleum imports decreased in 1979 to 552,000 tons, compared with 622,000 tons in 1978. The European Economic Community (EEC) countries purchased over 75% of total Cameroonian exports and provided most of the Nation's imports. The United States purchased $12.4 million in petroleum exports from Cameroon in 1978. The Monroe County Quarry is an open pit granite quarry located near the town of Bolingbroke. Monroe County. Georgia. The quarry has been in continuous operation for approximately 10 years. The quarry covers approximately 27 acres and has an annual production rate of 1.0 million tons. On the morning of April 26. 2000 a sudden rapid highwall failure occurred at the west end of the north wall of the quarry pit. The failure occurred approximately one hour after a three inch-wide crack was observed in an access road located at the crest of the highwall. No indications of failure had been observed prior to the development of the crack. The active mining area had been at the base of the failed area. The pit was successfully evacuated prior to the failure and there were no losses of either personnel or equipment. The amount of failed material was estimated to be in excess of two million tons. In order to ensure a safe working environment at the quarry a slope monitoring program was established in the area of the failure. The program consisted of using an EDM survey instrument to periodically measure the location of survey prisms installed at carious points on the north wall. The locations of the prisms were recorded over several months and changes in location were analyzed in order to identify and characterize the movement of the failed mass. The results of the analysis provided a basis for recommendations regarding access to various areas of the quarry. This paper discusses the factors contributing to the failure, the method of post-failure slope monitoring, anti the interpretation of the monitoring data.
