The Red October Gold Mine, owned by Saracen Gold Mines Pty Ltd, is located approximately 80 km south of Laverton, Western Australia. It is considered to be of a similar nature to many of the Archaean granite-greenstone deposits in the Laverton Tectonic Zone, and presents as an intriguing and relatively young deposit in terms of developed structural and genetic models. Regional deformation events have been proposed for the area, and are relatively well accepted. The most important of these deformation events in the region were the D4b (WNW–ESE sinistral transpression) and D5 (ENE–WSW dextral transpression) which have been attributed to the main Au mineralising phases. At the local scale there appears to have been a rotation of the regional stress field to provide the optimum orientation of maximum principal stress for sinistral movement on the main shear zone.Fully coupled 3D finite element analysis (FEA) was used to simulate the geomechanical response of the system based on structural observations. The geomechanical modelling resulted in highlighting anomalous patterns of stress and strain and subsequent fluid flow as a result of the two main deformation events. The D4 simulation provided a good correlation with the known distribution of subsidiary structures on the main shear zone, and furthermore provided several geomechanical targets that suggested locations of additional subsidiary structures. The D5 simulation provided a great insight into the response of the main shear zone and known subsidiary structures also highlighting additional targets indicating potential for further mineralisation. These targets have since been followed up with a 732 m deep surface reverse circulation (RC) drill hole, resulting in the discovery of two high-grade shoots, with follow up testing currently planned for mid-2014.CITATION:McLellan, J G, Conn, J, Howe, D and Gates, K, 2014. Binary alloys of molybdenum and tungsten were prepared by the Bureau of Mines in laboratory-scale experiments by hydrogen reduction of their vaporized hexafluorides. Near-optimum deposition parameters were determined, and the nature of the deposited alloys was investigated. Dense, homogeneous alloys were codeposited between 650° and 750° C with a reduction efficiency of more than 75 percent. The alloy composition was uniform when the hydrogen ratio in the gas feed mixture did not exceed 3 times the stoichiometric requirement. Regulating the proportions of the metal hexafluorides in the gas feed provided a large degree of control over the composition of the deposit. Hardness of the deposits varied directly with the proportion of excess hydro,,,, in the gas feed and with the weight-percent of tungsten in the alloy. Hardness was not affected by deposition temperature over the range 650° to 750° C for specimens of similar composition. Extreme brittleness and unsuitable physical shapes of the alloys prevented tensile strength measurements.

The Bureau of Mines studied factors affecting ignition of coal mine refuse and on methods for control of burning. Laboratory experiments showed that air permeates more readily through segregated than through nonsegregated refuse and that air permeability is greater through coarse than through fine particle refuse. Minus 3-1/4-inch refuse ignites spontaneously more readily than minus 1/4-inch refuse. The burning of a 1,000-pound conical coal pile was con-trolled by capping with an 18-inch-thick layer of minus 1/4-inch refuse containing 37 percent combustible. In field trials, the burning of refuse at operating mines was controlled by capping with a layer of fine refuse. Water, applied as a spray or by injection, quenched surface flames and cooled the burning waste. Inspection of refuse piles at operating mines showed that the spontaneous ignition tendency is affected by the exposed surface relative to the total volume and the segregation of particles during dumping.

We have confirmed on bench scale the removal of chlorides and alkalies (+95%) and over 2/3 of the zinc, lead and cadmium from EAF dusts. This has been achieved with arrononium acetate solutions alone, or with combinations of water wash, amonia-ammonium carbonate and ammonium acetate solutions. Also confirmed are the process routes for the recovery of the aforementioned elements into marketable products. The technology involves the complete recycling of the reagents. The FAF residue is returned to the electric furnace without risk of impurities buildup. Commercial scale testing with the recycled dust was satisfactory, including quality of the slag and its behavior during the melting stage. A cursory feasibility evaluation is presented.

Jaspilite, a mineral consisting of silica and iron oxide in varying proportions, is one of the host rocks of the high grade ore deposits situated in the Middleback Range of South Australia. As a result of laboratory investigations, a flowsheet was postulated for the beneficiation of jaspilite to produce an acceptable grade product for feeding to blast furnaces, The flowsheet involved the reduction of the hematite in the haspilite to magnetite, the grinding of the reduced product to 95 pct minus 325 mesh Tyler followed by wet magnetic separation, hydroseparation and filtration to yield a magnetite concentrate. Agglomeration of the fine concentrate would then be necessary to meet the physical requirements of blast furnace feed. To prove the postulated flowsheet, to obtain a more accurate estimate of costs and to obtain design data for a commercial installation, a pilot plant was constructed at Whyalla, South Australia.

Coal mine bounces and bursts are major problems facing U.S. mine operators. Bounces and bursts have the potential to inflict severe injury on mining personnel, damage equipment, and cause mine closures. High- stress conditions, at or near the working face, are the common denominator in the burst problem, If mine operators can locate high-stress and potentially burst-prone zones, they can then use stress-relief methods to control the burst condition. One method of locating the high-stress zone is the probe-hole-drilling or drilling-yield method. Probe-hole drilling is used frequently in Europe, the U.S.S.R., and Japan as a means for locating potential burst zones. Consequently, the Bureau of Nines performed tests in the laboratory and in a deep, burst-prone western mine to analyze probe-hole drilling. The in-mine method, very simply, involves drilling a hole into the coal seam and measuring the volume of cuttings obtained. A certain volume of cuttings can be expected from a certain diameter and length drill hole. A significant increase in the volume of cuttings means the zone around that particular hole is highly stressed. In-mine use of the drilling yield method has shown it to be a useful tool for locating highly stressed and potential burst zones. Results from laboratory testing confirm that high stress applied tri-axially to a cube specimen will cause a significant increase in the volume of cuttings from a small-diameter drill hole in the specimen.

The leaching kinetics of chalcopyrite in ammonium iodide solutions with iodine has been studied using rotating disc. The variables studied J include the concentrations of lixiviants, rotation speed, pH of the solution, reaction temperature, and reaction product layer. The leaching rate was found to be independent with the disc rotating speed. The apparent activation energy was measured to be about 50 kJ/mole from 15°C to 35°C, and 30.3 kJ/mole from 35°C to 60°C. "This article first describes the impact of respirable dust on the health of miners in underground coal mines in the United States of America. Second, it identifies the major sources of dust generation, namely cutting tools in the road headings. Two surveys associated with cutting tools were made to determine the useful life of these cutting tools, and to determine the effect of cutting tool wear on productivity of the continuous miners. Third, this article presents the results of a series of experiments carried out in the Rock Mechanics Laboratories at West Virginia University in order to study: 3.1 the effect of cutting tool rate of wear on respirable dust generation, 3.1.1 the effects of rock materials on tool wear and respirable dust generation, 3.1.2 the effect of cutting tool geometric parameters on respirable dust generation, and 3.1.3 the effect of tip materials used in the cutting tool on respirable dust generation. Recommendations in regard to cutting tool design are also presented in this paper.Silica and coal dust are the two major elements affecting the health of underground miners. According to Lemen [1] approximately 1,500 men died due to breathing in silica dust in 1936 while tunneling through a mountain of mostly silica, near the town of Gauley Bridge, West Virginia. Coal dust resulting in lung diseases in one of the major health hazards in underground coal mines. The impact of black lung on miners, coal workers' pneumoconioisis (CWP), has ranged from 16,000 to 23,000 each year since 1982 [1].The trend for conventional mining to continuous machine cutting of coal, using more productive machinery, is inexorable. Intolerable level of dust generated at the face is an indication of inefficient coal/rock cutting by these machines. The federal goverment of the United States paid about 11.7 billion dollars in workmen's compensation to more than 470,000 miners with CWP [2]. Bieniawski and Zipf [3] reported that annual benefit payments were about 2 billion dollars. The enactment of the Health and Safety Act in 1969 in the United States triggered the initial investigation into coal cutting mechanisms and cutting tool designs.The surveys concerning the utilization of cutting bits and performance of continuous miners in underground coal mines were made in order to have first hand information about bit consumption and coal produ¬ction.Three types of used bits, commonly utilized cutting tools on continuous miners, were collected from different coal mines. The used bits were grouped into symmetrically and asymmetrically worn bits. Distribution analysis for weight loss and conical height loss was done. Details of the results are presented elsewhere [4], here the results are summarized briefly. The analysis shows that approximately 50% of the collected bits have worn asymmetrically, which shows that many bits do not rotate properly during cutting. Analysis of the distribution of bit wear showed that the degree of bit wear varied from one type to another and with mining conditions. On average, the weight loss of the used bits was 4% to 7% with a maximum of 31%. Correspondingly, the loss of the conical height was observed to vary between 11% and 23% with a maximum of 71%. ThE materials used in this investigation were furnished by the Aluminum Co. of America and consisted of high-purity alurhinum (99.995 pct) and two aluminum-magnesium alloys containing approximately 2 and 5 pct Mg. The compositions of these alloys are listed in Table I. The materials were received as hot rolled 3/8-in. diam rods and were made from the same heats as the materials which were previously used in this laboratory.'j3 The rods were cold swaged to 1/4-in. diam by 1 in. long, and then had two parallel flats machined over the gage length 0.085 in. apart. The test bars were annealed for 10 min at 700° F, and strained 1 pct in tension at room temperature. They were electropolished (80 pct acetic acid; 20 pct perchloric acid, 70 pct concentration) at a temperature of 60°F at approximately 20 v. A grid, transverse or square, spaced 0.2 mm apart, was impressed by rolling a fine threaded screw (128 threads per in.) across the flat surfaces. The depth of the grooves was less than 5 p. For final annealing and grain size control the specimens were enclosed in aluminum foil and sealed in Vycor tubes. Annealing conditions varied from 1 hr at 700° F to 5 days at 1050° F, depending on the alloy content, to give for most of the specimens a final grain size of about 1 mm. This treatment was followed by electropol-ishing as described above. For the test series presented in Figs. 4 and 5 round specimens were used instead of flat ones, and fine machining marks served as marker lines instead of the impressed grid lines. Electropolishing was omitted. The major advantage is that the spacing of the machining marks is only about 1 u as compared to the 200 u of the impressed grid lines, permitting higher precision in strain measurements. Unfortunately the strain annealing necessary for grain size control also resulted in some preferred orientation of the grains. The preferred orientation of three arbitrary specimens was measured by X-ray diffraction methods and the averaged results are shown in Fig. 1. The possible effects of the preferred orientation on the test results will be discussed later. The testing temperatures were 410°, 515", 725", and 940° F, with one exception in the case of the 5.1 pct Mg alloy. Since the solubility limit of this alloy is 520°F, a test temperature of 545°F was cho-se sen instead of 515°F. The selection of the test temperature was based on two considerations: 1) at 900°F and above, extensive grain boundary migration made it more difficult to measure grain boundary sliding; 2) at 400°F and below, there was so little grain boundary sliding that it was again difficult to make precise measurements. The stress was chosen to give a creep rate of approximately 2.7 pct per hr in connection with Figs. 2

Fly-ash was used as adsorbent to remove butyl xanthate from aqueous solution in this study. Adsorption kinetics investigation reveals that the adsorption process abides by the Lagergren-second-order Kinetic Model, and fine fly-ash prepared by grinding has a higher second-order adsorption rate as 1.25 g/mg?min and a higher saturated adsorption amount as 10.92mg/g. Four influencing factors as adsorption temperature, solution pH, consumption of fly-ash and adsorption time were investigated. Testing results indicate that butyl xanthate removal rates declines slightly with the temperature increase within the range of 15-50?, increases slightly when pH rises from 7.27 to 8.01 and then declines from 99.65% to 98.25% when pH rises from 8.01 to 11.10. An enhancement of removal rates can be observed by increasing the consumption of the adsorbing agent or prolonging the adsorption time. Thermal desorption was adopted to regenerate the used fly-ash, and test results show that fly-ash possess good regeneration performance and could be used as adsorbent repeatedly with little influence on the adsorption capacity.

IN all special branches of the chemical and metallurgical industries, in which large electric furnaces became necessary for carrying out new processes or for the improvement of old ones, the development of the electric furnaces took place on much the same lines. The endeavors to make a success of a new idea brought forth many ingenious designs, which, however, almost without exception, furnished the proof that the safest and shortest way to practical success is the utmost simplicity of construction of the necessary apparatus. Our knowledge of the qualities of materials for building electric furnaces and of the constituents of the furnace-charges, especially their electric conductivity and their chemical affinity . towards one another at high temperatures, is still far from being complete, and from this fact we must conclude that the smaller the number of elements in the construction of a furnace, the fewer the number of unreliable factors both in the construction and in the operation of the electric furnace. This conclusion deserves special attention when an electric furnace for making steel has to be chosen from the constantly growing number of inventions, inasmuch as the chief con¬stituent of steel, the element iron, is a substance which in its liquid phase has so great an affinity fir those elements which are to be removed from the charge, that it is very difficult to comply with the following conditions: 1, to beat the refining-slag to the highest point of its chemical activity ; to prevent the iron from entering the slaw, or, where this cannot be done, to make it enter so that it finally appears in the end-product

INTRODUCTION CERTAIN of the permanent magnet alloys provide ideal systems for the study of the kinetics of the precipitation reaction and the correlation of structure with properties. One such system, Cu-Ni-Fe, was found by Bradley1,2 to exhibit a coherent transition state in the precipitation process analogous to that reported for Al-Cu alloys somewhat earlier.3 The attractiveness of some permanent magnet alloys for study lies in the fact that vertical sections of the ternary phase diagram in certain regions of composition (Fig I) have as their prototype the binary Ni-Au diagram. Alloys of this type decompose into products that have the same crystal lattice type but only slightly different lattice parameters. The advantages that such alloy systems offer for study over the usual in which an intermetallic compound is formed are many: I. Since the precipitate has the same crystal structure as the matrix, complex atomic movements are not required to form the new lattice. 2. Similarly, complex orientation relationships are not involved for both the matrix and the precipitate would be expected to have the same orientation. 3. Small disregistry of the decomposition products at equilibrium (in contrast with Cu-Ag alloys) is conducive to extensive coherent growth in the transient state and thus the transition lattice can be detected by the usual X ray diffraction methods. 4. Finally, the relative quantities of precipitate and depleted matrix can be varied from o to 100 pct* thus permitting wide freedom for the study of the effect of composition on coherent growth and properties. In the Cu-Ni-Fe alloys of appropriate composition, the face-centered cubic precipitate and also the depleted matrix when first formed are coherent with the parent matrix.1,2 The two have the same [ao] parameter as the original matrix but they are both tetragonal; the precipitate has an axial ratio c/a < I while that of the depleted matrix is c/a > I. When coherency is lost they assume the normal face-centered cubic structure with the depleted matrix having a lattice parameter greater than the original matrix and that of the precipitate less. Such a mechanism would also be expected for Cu-Ni-Co alloys because of the similarity in constitution but this had not been demonstrated. The present investigation was conducted on a Cu-Ni-Co alloy. The constitution diagram and magnetic properties of these alloys have been fairly well established 4,5 however, no previous determinations of mechanism of precipitation and no correlation of structure with properties had been made. This Bureau of Mines report is a study of the organizational framework of the ferrous scrap industry, of the products produced, and of the factors affecting the consumption of ferrous scrap by the steel industry. Consumption data from 27 major iron and steel firms in the States of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin during the period between 1957 to 1962 were grouped by type of iron and steel furnace production facilities to determine consumption pattern for various grades of scrap in comparison to ingot production, hot metal consumption, and home scrap generation. Grades of scrap affected by changes in scrap consumption were determined, and the pattern that emerged was analyzed. Correlation of scrap demand and its effects on scrap prices based on price of scrap receipts of No. 1 heavy melting scrap and No. 2 bundles in the Chicago area for the years 1957 through 1962 indicated that demand trends do not always affect the price of scrap, Past and present technological advancements in steelmaking processes are discussed, and their effects on the scrap industry are analyzed.

"The Contract C310 is part of the current biggest infrastructure project of Europe “Crossrail” which is a major new cross-London rail link project and comprises the construction of the North Woolwich Portal, Plumstead Portal and the twin tube Thames Tunnels with a length of approximately 2.6km. Two Mix-Shield TBMs (Diameter 7.12m) were driving through differing challenging ground conditions (Thanet Sand, Gravels, Flint and Chalk) below the ground water table. The two tunnels were underpassing several listed buildings, sensitive structures, operational railway tracks with low overburden and close to existing subway tunnels in an urban environment. Several additional measures as compensation grouting, micro piles and an intensive monitoring has been carried out to ensure a safe tunnelling process. PROJECT OVERVIEW CROSSRAIL Project Crossrail Crossrail is currently the biggest infrastructure project in Europe which has been developed to serve London and the southeast of England. The project includes the construction of twin-bore tunnels on a west-east alignment under central London and the upgrading of existing National Rail lines to the east and west of central London. The new rail track, as shown in Figure 1, starting in Shenfield/ Abbey Wood in the east of London and ending in Reading / Heathrow Airport in the west of London, includes the construction of nine central area stations, providing interchange with London Underground, National Rail and London Bus services, and the upgrading or renewal of existing stations outside central London.Altogether there will be 118km of new rail tracks, including 42km of tunnels and 40 train stations. After completion in 2018, Crossrail expects 200 million passengers per year (Tauriainen, Rädle, Ingram 2013)."

Para ello, se realizó campañas donde se hizo el reconocimiento exhaustivo del límite de afloramiento del Paleoceno en toda la provincia, que va desde Hasi Melehes hasta Villa Cisneros, así como se determinó que las capas fosfatadas importantes estaban localizadas en este tramo geológico. Así también se revela la geografía, sondeos, testificaciones, pozos y calicatas y la organización del trabajo de evaluación de dicho sector.

Magnetic torque studies of ferromagnetic single crystals have been carried out in a number of laboratories during the last decade&apos;s2 and some work has been reported on polycrystalline material showing preferred orientation. Goss3 used the method extensively in developing electrical sheet with desirable magnetic properties, but he used it as a control rather than as a means of studying the texture. Bozorth4 made a quantitative correlation of a torque curve he obtained from some cold-rolled iron with the texture as determined from X-rays, but did not extend his studies beyond the one specimen. Other studies, which have been reported from time to time2,5 have also been incomplete in the sense that no effort was made to study a whole series of samples, differing only in degree of cold reduction or in the annealing temperature, in order to ascertain the effect of such treatments on the texture as revealed by torque measurements. It is the purpose of this investigation to make such a study, mainly in order to see how useful the method can be made when used under favorable circumstances and to find what kind of a correlation can be expected between magnetic and X-ray studies of texture. Before proceeding further, it is desirable to say a little about single crystals, so as to make clear the concepts involved in magnetic torque measurements. Magnetic Torque Method It is fairly well known nowadays that single crystals of ferromagnetic substances have directions of easy magnetization and of hard magnetization. In Fig. 1 are reproduced typical magnetization curves for a single crystal of iron, which show that in a < 100 > direction saturation occurs at low fields compared to those required to saturate the same crystal in a <110> or a <111> direction. The Organic Act of 1910 established the Bureau of Mines and gave it authority and responsibility for conducting research on separation, recovery, and recycling of waste products and scrap generated by the mineral and metals industries and the consuming public.(1)1 It was apparent to our Nation&apos;s leaders even then that mineral resources, once mined, are irreplaceable and that the development of methods for recycling the values contained in wastes would be required to solve the problem of even¬tual scarcity, Estimates of the increase in per capita consumption of mineral resources in this country indicate that the consumption of metals, minerals, and fossil fuels by 1980 will be double that consumed in 1970 (2). The United States can expect to meet its future mineral needs in three basic ways: the first is through increased production of primary raw minerals; second by increasing imports from foreign sources; and third by recycling secondary materials and metals that were formerly discarded as waste. EVERYONE enjoyed the coal meeting and found it profitable. At least your correspondent did, and those to whom he talked. Close to a hundred were there. The Coronado proved an excellent headquarters hotel, though it is two miles or more from the business district of St. Louis; its Crystal Room was suitable for the technical sessions; its Lounge adequate for registration and informal chats; its Club Caprice made an artistic setting for the informal banquet; and its Coal Hole in the basement presumably served other needs-unfortunately we passed up an invitation to find out, and never got another. To be sure, the first day of the meeting (Monday, Oct. 28) was a drizzly one, but that only served to keep people inside where they belonged. Believe it or not, the first technical session was only five minutes late in getting tinder way, with H. N. Eavenson&apos;s words of welcome. M. M. Leighton then took over the conduct of the meeting, and invited Eugene McAuliffe to read his paper on how much coal the railroads are likely to use in the future. E. G. Bailey then presented some written discussion; among other things he wondered about the success of stokers on locomotives, and whether or not the burning of coal in locomotives could not he made a cleaner operation. Mr. McAuliffe pointed out that railroads are built to haul coal rather than to burn it. Maximum firebox efficiency is often subordinated to the traffic situation. Powdered-coal firing has not been a success because of limited firebox space. Stokers have resulted in economies indirectly, because large locomotives cannot he hand-fired and stokers thus make them possible. Nowadays it is not so important to do away with smoke, cinders, and soot, because most trains are sealed up and air-conditioned.

Este trabalho investigou as alterações microestruturais e de dureza em amostras da liga eutética Al-11%Si-5%Ni submetidas ao tratamento por refusão superficial a laser (RSL). Nos tratamentos, foram realizadas seis combinações de parâmetros de velocidade de varredura (V) e potência (P) do laser. As seis trilhas resultantes do processo de refusão a laser foram examinadas por microscopia óptica para verificação da mudança das dimensões das trilhas, por microscopia eletrônica de varredura para averiguação do refino microestrutural e por ensaios de microdureza Vickers para verificação do aumento de dureza. Foi estabelecida uma correlação entre espaçamento dendrítico primário (?1) e microdureza envolvendo resultados do presente experimento RSL e outro envolvendo fundição convencional. A RSL foi eficaz no refinamento da microestrutura, formando dendritas de a-Al e região eutética interdendrítica, obtendo ?1 mínimo de 0,86 µm e elevação da microdureza em até 88% se comparada a microestrutura bruta de fundição.
