O posicionamento de bobinas a quente com seu eixo na direção horizontal protege suas bordas, mas restringe sua área de apoio sobre o solo. Logo, é inevitável que a bobina sofra algum grau de ovalização pela ação de seu próprio peso, o qual se torna particularmente acentuado em algumas situações, como no caso de aços com médio e alto teor de carbono após bobinamento sob temperaturas relativamente altas. O objetivo desse trabalho foi identificar as possíveis contramedidas para minimizar o grau de ovalização das bobinas a quente. Foi constatado que a ocorrência desse problema é crítica para bobinas mais finas, com maior peso e com menor tensionamento entre as espiras, bem como quando seu bobinamento termina antes da transformação total da austenita, particularmente no caso de aços com alto carbono equivalente. Por outro lado, o posicionamento das bobinas em berços com ângulos otimizados contribui para minimizar a ovalização. A seleção das medidas a ser adotadas para reduzir esse problema deve ser ponderada caso a caso, pois elas podem eventualmente interferir com as características finais do produto solicitadas pelo cliente.

"Mercury in flue gas of coal-fired plants was concerned as another serious pollution when sulfur dioxide pollution was controlled now. The adsorbent made from fly ash by thermal precipitation sulfur to remove mercury in fuel gas from coal combustion plant, SEM, BET, TGA and other measurement methods were used to characterize the effect on surface morphology, sulfur distribution and specific surface. High temperature deposition furnace was applied to increase sulfur content in fly ash based adsorbents produced in lab. The study found that sulfur attached to the adsorbent surface, mesopore and microporous structure, increasing its sulfur content of adsorbent. Sulfur was filled in interspace as small molecule S2, S5, increased their surface area and enhanced their adsorption capacity. The specific surface area increased by thermal precipitation sulfur, and specific surface area which increased with increasing temperature.1. IntroductionThe mercury emission caused by human activity has accounted for 10%-30% of total mercury emission all over the world[11, and the emission from coal-fired power plant have a huge proportion of these emission caused by human activity. Active carbon microstructure and surface morphology play an important role in its adsorption capability, which offers the potential for controlling environmental pollutant, such as sewage, fuel gas, atmosphere and et al [2,31, because it is a material with high specific surface area that long been considered as an excellent adsorbent. At present, include activated carbon, fly ash, calcium-based sorbents and other novel adsorbents. The adsorption capacity and production cost were very important in the process of mercury removal by adsorbents, so the mercury removal has focus on developing adsorbents of highly-efficient. In particular, the waste of metallurgical from coal combustion and the others have a significant advantage about the cost, and they have the highly-efficient in mercury removal after modified to enhance their adsorption capacity, such as fly ash of coal-fired. Apart from specific surface area, element content, pore structure, and surface morphology of activated carbon have great effect on its adsorption ability. Compared to adsorbents without modification, active carbon impregnated with other elements, such as chlorine, sulfur, bromine and et al. had more excellent characteristics to remove specific pollutants."

"The empirical approach for pillar design assumes that geological conditions should be perfect, such as horizontal seams, and that pillar strength and behavior will only depend on the coal seam strength and the vertical pressure caused by the overburden thickness on the coal seam; this vertical pressure is based on the tributary area. Empirical methods do not consider the effect of the interface between the roof and pillar or the floor and pillar.The effect of the interface shear strength on final coal pillar strength has been studied since the 1960s. However, few case studies have been generated from that, especially in shallow underground coal mining (less than 100 meters). This case study involves a mining section at the 101 coal mine in the Santa Catarina state of Brazil, which is experiencing pillar rib spalling and yielding because of a 1-to 2-cm-thick clay layer at the area of contact between the coal seam and immediate roof. The depth of the coal seam is 60 m on average and 2.3 m in height. This particular section also has 12-14% (7-8°) of seam inclination. The pillar size varies from l lxll to 13xl2m; thus, the safety factor (SF) based on the ARMPS approach is more than 1.5. The objective of this paper is to determine the cause of the pillar yielding and study the effect of the clay layer at the interface between the roof and pillar, including the inclination of the coal seam. This study conducted empirical and numerical models (2D and 3D) to understand the effect of the thin clay layer. The conclusion is that the clay layer affected the strength of the interface between roof and pillar, causing rib spalling and reducing the pillar strength.INTRODUCTIONPillar stability and deformation depends on the coal seam strength and vertical pressure caused by the overburden thickness on the coal seam, and this vertical pressure is based on the tributary area. The effect of the interface shear strength on the final coal pillar strength has been studied since the 1960s. However, few case studies have been generated from that, especially in shallow underground coal mining (less than 100 m). The production of portland cement requires that four basic elements -- calcium, silica, alumina and iron -- be ground to a fine powder, homogenized, and fed to the pyroprocessing unit, where it is burned to a cement clinker. The raw material must either be ground wet in a slurry form or dried and ground to a dry powder, with a fineness of approximately 85% passing the 200 M screen. According to the Portland Association's Plant Information Summary, approximately 38% of the U.S. capacity is ground wet and 62% ground dry. NO thought had been given to deep level mining at the Alaska Juneau mine prior to 1930, but in that year a prospect winze was started and continued for 1000 ft. vertically below the main haulage or adit level. The point at which this winze was started was selected entirely by the prevailing physical conditions, such as proximity to established workings, convenience, and the presence overhead of a substantial pillar of dimensions sufficient to lo¬cate the sheave wheel and loading pocket. It was, therefore, with some surprise that the unusually high-grade ore found just below the collar of the winze persisted, with certain vari¬ations, to a full depth of 1000 ft. vertically. Likewise this unusually high-grade ore was found to persist on the various crosscuts driven on levels at 200-ft. vertical intervals. To be brief, this deep level work found richer ore than any yet found in the mine over like areas, and inasmuch as the area was sufficient to plan for extensive deep level mining, plans for such work were given extended consideration.

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) THROUGH the courtesy of Dr. James Douglas I am permitted to give, a summary of some of the results obtained in leaching slimes tailings in a series of experiments conducted under my direction at Douglas, Ariz.. during the past year. While the test run for which the data are given deals with a particular case, much of the work is general in its application and may therefore be of interest. This work was done upon the ores of the Burro Mountain Copper Co. A description of the geology of the district will be-found in the paper by R. E. Somers published in the May, 1915, Bulletin of the Institute. The mineral is pyrite and chalcocite very finely disseminated throughout the gangue and a characteristic of all the ores is the large amount of alumina present. A representative analysis of the particular ore under consideration would be about as follows: Cu, per cent 2.35 S, percent 3.0 Ag, ounces per ton 0.05 CaO, per cent 0.5 Au None K202, per cent 4.0 Fe, per cent 1.5 SiO2, per cent 70.0 A120,, per cent 13.0 The leaching of the ore direct was early dismissed from consideration for the following reasons: 1. The ore would have to be quite finely crushed to liberate the mineral for leaching; concentrating after crushing would cost but a few cents a ton; and a higher total recovery would result from leaching tailings rather than ore. 2. Rough concentration would yield a suitable material for roasting to make sulphur dioxide or sulphuric acid in connection with the leaching scheme. 3. Such a program put the question of cost vs. recovery on a basis where flotation and discarding of tailings were directly comparable.

Uniquely colored, thin-bedded quartzite is quarried between Crossville and Crab Orchard in Cumberland County, Tenn. It is produced in all sizes up to the limits of transportation from beds usually ranging in thickness from less than 1/2 in. to 6 in. The stone is very resistant to wear and weathering and is marketed throughout the country for many different purposes in exterior and interior construction. The annual production exceeds 36,000 tons, valued at nearly $1,000,000.

METALLURGISTS and mill operators appreciate, in a general way, .the economic or commercial relationship between recovery and grade of product but few have correlated in detail fluctuating metal prices with the metallurgy. They know that many factors such as metal price, dedusiions for returning charge, transportation, percentage of metal in head ore, etc.; all affect the commercial relationship between recovery and grade of product. In practically every mill some one at some ' time has calculated the amount of recovery that can be sacrificed for each percentage increase in grade of concentrate and from this calculated ratio the commercial or ., economic tail has been established. Such a ratio finally becomes a well-entrenched rule by which the progress of the metallurgy is judged.. When once established, these-, ratios are but seldom corrected to changes of metal prices for each possible grade of concentrate that may be produced. The calculation is tedious when often repeated. Other methods have been suggested and used to correlate the commercial with the metallurgical phase. A factor .derived ,by multiplying the grade of concentrate by recovery is often used, but is of little importance because it does not possess a single commercial quantity. The percentage monetary recovery calculated by dividing the gross value of the ore into the net smelter return gives a good economic index and, is to be commended, but it is difficult to correlate exactly and quickly the work of each day on a commercial basis.

The coal mining industry is now faced with new regulatory requirements that limit the discharge of chlorides into receiving streams. To meet these new regulatory standards for treated mine water, a zero liquid waste approach was developed using advanced treatment technologies. Rheology is the science which deals with the deformation and flow of matter. Thus nccology is concerned with the flow of any material. The mining industry is concerned with digging things out of the ground, extracting the good stuff and throwing away the had stuff. In the upgrading processes associated with mining, is mineral processing, wet techniques are used where the primary material being handled is a particulate fluid, ie a suspension. After the processing operation, with the concentrates extracted, what is left behind generally is a wet material in suspension form, which may or may not contain reagents harmful to the environment. The amount of waste generated in any of the mining processes is large, in fact, the mining industry is the largest generator of solid waste in Australia. In order to minimise the waste generated within the industry it has become of interest to handle the particulate fluid wastes, or suspensions, at high concentrations, thus removing water and some of the reagents which may be harmful to the environment. The resultant highly concentrated suspension is a non-Newtonian hold Rheology deals with the flow of non-Newtonian fluids; therefore i combination of rheological understanding of high density suspensions. ill conjunction with an understanding of the environmental problems hero' faced by the mining industry, can and has led to improved methods of waste disposal in the industry, ie waste minimisation. At this time, over 300 tons of Au are used in electronic equipment each year with other precious and strategic metals such as Ag, Pt, Pd, Cu, Nb, Ta, etc. After the use-phase, the electronic devices become electronic waste (e-waste); consequently it is important to consider e-waste as a secondary supply for recovery of these metals. One of the most important components is the printed circuit boards (PCBs) because the amount of their precious metals is ten times higher than rich precious metals bearing ore. This paper presents the recovery of Au, Ag, Cu and Nb from PCBs of discarded computers using leaching column technique. The amount of these metals in used PCBs was: 613 g/ton of Au, 1515 g/ton of Ag, 36 g/ton of Nb and 23.4 % of Cu. The PCBs were crushed with a hammer mill until reaching a particle size between 3.33 mm to 0.43 mm. Then, it was leached with sodium cyanide solution in a glass column using the following conditions: sodium cyanide concentration 4 g/L, flux 20 L/kg PCBs day, pH between 10.5 to 11 and leaching time 15 days. Every day, after leaching, the pregnant solutions passed through a column with activated carbon to complete the closed loop system. The following recoveries were obtained: 46.6% of Au, 51.3% of Ag, 47.2% of Nb and 62.3 % of Cu. The products obtained are: a) loaded carbon that contains the desired metals and b) processed PCBs with precious metal contents. A preliminary technical-economic study shows the feasibility to create a small-scale PCBs recycling plant. The initial investment is on the order of US$ 155 639, considering the recovered metals from loaded carbon. The internal rate of return for 10 years period (IRR) and net present value (NPV) estimated are 27% and US$ 105 926 respectively. The grinding mill is probably the most common unit operation used in mineral processing. There is, however, much which can still be done in the way of optimization. This paper discusses the results of a well controlled pilot scale test in which the performance of a tumbling mill with a conventional rubber lining equipped with lifter bars is compared to that with a smooth rubber lining of the magnetic type. The results indicate that the smooth lining is about 14 percent more effective with respect to energy consumption. By optimizing the size of the grinding media, the mill capacity can be increased in many grinding operations. In this specific case the -20 mm ball charge required 26 percent less grinding energy than one with a -30 mm ball charge. The energy savings can. in most cases, be converted to increased capacity. The wear of the grinding media is difficult to assess over a short period test but the results suggest it is somewhat less when a smooth lining is used. The wear of the linings has not been included in this study but it is generally accepted that the use of the magnetic lining reduces the lining costs dramatically. Computer simulation using the Millsoft code, developed by Mishra e.a. confirms and explains the increased effectiveness of comminution when smooth lining and smaller grinding balls are used.

The Exposed Treasure gold-mine has, for the past four years, been one of the largest producing mines of Southern California, its annual output havirig con~tituted I per cent. of the total gold and silver production of the entire State. At the present moment the property is idle, owing to the large quantity of water encountered on the lower levels, which will require the installation of a powerful pumping-plant before operations call be recommenced. Moreover, a prompt change in the character of the ore has occurred at water-level, which makes imperative an extensive campaign of development in the region of the un-oxidized ores before a plant adapted to their treatment call be definitely decided upon. The character of the changes encountered in these deeper ores makes the geology of this deposit a matter of importance, riot only for the immediate district, but for the desert region of Southern California in general, where many mines exist having in the oxidized belt conditions that, in many respects, resemble those in the Exposed Treasure mine. The deposit is situated in an apparently isolated butte about 2.5 miles south from the town of Mojave, on the Mojave desert. The butte, though apparently isolated, is in Fact geologicallg part of an extinct volcano, known as Soledad butte, which rises out of the plain 1.5 miles SW. of' the mine, to an altitude of 4,650 ft. above sea-level. Other buttes also rise from the desert plain toward the south and east, and again to the westward, all being closely related geologically to Soledad butte,—the whole constituting a single system as to origin and time. In this work, a detailed characterization of the cyclic damage mechanisms on duty in car heat exchangers has been carried out in order to improve their reliability. The material which consists in very thin (<0.3 mm thick) sheets formed of 3 co-rolled aluminum alloys (4045 /3916/ 4045) has been brazed in order to obtain metallurgical and surface conditions representative of those of the real components. Fatigue tests at constant stress amplitude have been performed at room temperature and 120°C in order i) to characterize the cyclic resistance of the studied materials and ii) to study the effect of temperature on the fatigue damage mechanism. The mechanisms leading to failure have been identified from post mortem fractographic analysis. The Wohler curves obtained show that, contrary to common structural Al alloys, this type of thin sheet brazed multi material can be cycled for several hundred thousand cycles at very high stress level (> ~ 80 % of the tensile strength). This behaviour is analysed with respect to the microstructure resulting from the brazing process and the low number of grains present in the sample thickness (around 5 grains).

The Nena Cu-Au high sulphidation deposit has formed within the Frieda River Intrusive Complex in association with a major dilatant structure. Multiple intermediate intrusives of Miocene age are localised by a splay (Frieda Fault) of the Fiak-Leonard-Schultz Thrust, a several hundred kilometre long structure, formed parallel to the accretionary prism of northern Papua New Guinea.The high sulphidation systems including Nena, crop out as narrow silica-alunite ridges extending for up to 5-6km in length within a dilational structural environment. Alteration at Mena exhibits two phases of hydro-thermal activity: an initial stage, inferred to be volatile-rich, which has produced zoned alteration; and a later phase, postulated to have been a liquid-dominated fluid, which has brecciated earlier alteration zones and deposited gangue phases as well as Cu/Au-bearinq sulphides in open spaces.

The cyanide leaching rate of gold from a multi-refractory gold concentrate (18.05 g/t Au) containing 1.62% As, 20.76% S, 6.95% C and 1.31% Sb was only 1.33%. The enhancement of gold leaching was studied mainly by the pretreatment of oxidative roasting and alkaline sulfide washing. Results showed that after the two-stage roasting (i.e., I stage of 500 °C, 1 h and II stage of 700 °C, 2 h) most of sulfur (93.84%) and carbon (98.27%) were removed, but the gold leaching rate of calcine just reached 71.33% because the residual arsenic (0.63%) and antimony (1.15%) were still high. After alkaline sulfide (i.e., NaOH and Na2S) washing, the residual arsenic and antimony was further decreased to 0.21 and 0.65%, respectively. The gold leaching rate of the treated calcine by cyanidation could increase to 93.52% substantially. Also, the optimized particle size, NaCN concentration and leaching time were −0.045 mm over 85%, 0.1% and 36 h, respectively.

Today?s steel industry is in a vibrant and resurgent mode. This transformation has been in the making for some time now. Over the last few decades, the industry was steadily transforming itself into becoming a high tech industry. New technology was adopted, efficiencies were enhanced, lean manufacturing concepts were brought in and a strong customer focus was developed. Today?s mills employ sophisticated instrumentation, computerized monitoring, on-line smart systems etc. driving processes that are producing at rates of many tons/minute. All this is not possible without judiciously using the latest available technologies in various fields and developing a more sophisticated work force. Prof. Sohn has been a pioneer in driving the concept of process engineering in process metallurgy. In this paper the focus is on some aspects of process engineering ? primarily process modeling - as applied to iron and steelmaking processes. Examples are shown to demonstrate how problems have been addressed. Some thoughts on future directions are presented.

In the present study, the heat balance of the Hirakud smelter aluminium reduction cell has been accurately assessed using only a surface thermocouple and a pyrometer, As it is well known that using a single linear or quadratic relationship to estimate the heat flux from the measured surface temperature does not provide the accuracy required to close the cell heat balance, this approach was not used in this study, Instead, the fundamental natural convection and radiation heat flux equations were used systematically for each measurement point, Practically, this means that the ambient air temperature and at least one ambient radiative temperature must also be known in addition to the surface temperature for each measurement point. Sometimes, the radiative heat flux could not be accurately estimated using a single ambient radiative temperature, In those cases, a more accurate estimation based on two ambient radiative temperatures and corresponding view factors has been used instead, It turns out that although at least three temperature measurements are required to estimate a single heat flux, it takes a lot less time to make those temperature measurements using a pyrometer than directly measuring the heat flux using an expensive heat flux meter, Furthermore, no loss in accuracy was detected when using this approach as the cell heat balance could be closed within 5%, the level of accuracy typical of cell heat balance assessment using heat flux meter.

Com a redução da oferta de minério granulado de boa qualidade no mercado mundial e as restrições ambientais à sinterização, as pelotas de minério de ferro passaram a ocupar um papel importante como matéria prima para produção de ferro primário. Entretanto, embora apresentem maior resistência à degradação, as pelotas ainda sofrem com este problema, embora em menor magnitude, quando comparadas com granulados. Pode-se identificar a degradação das pelotas de minério de ferro em duas etapas, durante o manuseio e sob redução. Uma vez que vários estudos já analisaram a degradação durante o manuseio, a degradação durante a redução torna-se um assunto relevante e pouco explorado. Assim, o presente trabalho avaliou as energias envolvidas no movimento da carga ao longo de um forno de redução direta do tipo Midrex, usando o método dos elementos discretos. Para isso, foi utilizado o software EDEM® para obtenção das energias dissipadas durante as colisões das partículas. Aplicando estas energias ao modelo mecanicista proposto por Tavares e Carvalho [4] para fragmentação das partículas foi possível estimar a taxa de geração de finos no interior do forno. Estes resultados foram utilizados na previsão da degradação mecânica de pelotas no interior do forno, que previu a geração de 1,2 a 2,6% de finos gerados em um forno Minimod®, dependendo das premissas usadas.

Michigan&apos;s production of 17,301,000 bbl. in 1945, which is in line with previous years, has been maintained by extensions to old fields like Deep River, Adams, Fork, and others. There were a number of new discoveries but, as in the past, these are not given very much importance because enough drilling has not been done to develop their potentialities; however, judging by the past, some of them will develop enough production so that 1946 -will probably be in line with other years. Activities in Michigan were confined to the Basin area of the lower Peninsula, which has been under development since 1925.
