Sensor-based sorting is a financially and technically viable technique that is operating with little or no water and relatively little power consumption. Sensor-based sorting has already proven its operational stability at two gold applications in South Africa. Sensor-based sorting cannot only turn waste dumps and diluted mining blocks into reserves. The implementation can also cause a decrease in specific operating costs of mill and mine when for example replacing selective mining by bulk mining methods with subsequent sorting. Successful installations, operational experience, test work data and flow sheet integration from mine-to-mill underline the impact and potential that sensor-based sorting can have on the gold mining and processing industry.

The Environment Weipa is located at 12° south latitude on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula, North Queensland, Australia. The climate is tropical with most of the 1 600 mm. average annual rainfall falling between November and March. During the short winter months (May/ August) the weather is clear and pleasant, with temperatures seldom exceeding 27°C.Throughout the remainder of the year, conditions are frequently oppressive due to consistent high ambient temperatures accompanied by high humidity. The terrain is of low relief, and generally not more than 6 to 10m. above mean sea level adjacent to the coast. The coastline features numerous short estuaries which discharge run-off from the heavy rains collected by creeks and rivers. The whole area is covered by an open forest, the predominant species of which is Eucalyptus tetradonta. These eucalypts have only limited commercial value and are heavily infested with termites. Despite the fact that Weipa is close to the location of the first reported sighting of the Australian coastline by a European (William Janz - 1606), it remains very isolated. There is no developed road or rail connection to centres of population, so that transport of practically all products, personnel and materials to and from Weipa is by sea and air. The Renard kimberlite cluster is located in the Monts Otish region of Quebec, Canada. A Canadian National Instrument (NI) 43-101 compliant resource statement for the Renard kimberlites 2, 3, 4 and 9 and the Lynx kimberlite dyke was first issued in 2008 followed by a Preliminary Economic Assessment and the development of a conceptual mine plan. Following a successful drill program in 2009 that greatly expanded the amount of kimberlite in Renard 2, a revised resource statement was issued in December 2009 comprising 23 million carats of Indicated Mineral Resources and 13 million carats of Inferred Mineral Resources, a threefold increase on the previous estimate. The project is currently the focus of a second Preliminary Economic Assessment and it is expected that a full feasibility and permitting program will commence in 2010 leading to the creation of Quebec's first diamond mine by 2013.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a perennial problem particularly in abandoned mines, occurring due to the oxidation of sulphidic mine wastes. AMD is usually characterized by high concentration of dissolved metal ions, sulphate and low pH. The efficacies of substrates such as rice husk and the bark of Eucalyptus tereticornis (Sm.) are assessed for the removal of metal ions such as iron, zinc and copper from acid mine water obtained from an abandoned copper mine. Over 99 % of Fe, 98 % of Zn and 95 % of Cu removal could be achieved from acid mine water, with a concomitant increase in the pH value by three units using rice husk as an adsorbent. With respect to tree bark as an adsor-bent, about 96 % of Fe, 75 % of Zn and 92 % of Cu could be removed from the acid mine water with an attendant increase in the pH value by two units. The free energy of adsorption of the metal ions onto rice husk and tree bark is found to be negative in both the cases, while the adsorption process is endothermic in the case of rice husk and exothermic for tree bark. The adsorption process is found to adhere to the Lagergren pseudo-first order rate equation. The reduction of sulphate con-centration in the acid mine water is achieved using a typical sulphate reducing bacteria namely De-sulfotomaculum nigrificans. Desorption experiments indicate that about 88 % of Zn, 87% of Cu and over 77 % of Fe could be recovered from rice husk and over 70 % of Fe, 82 % of Zn and 77 % of Cu could be desorbed from the metal loaded tree bark using 5 M HCl. The possible mechanisms of metal ion and sulphate removal from acid mine water using rice husk and tree bark are discussed.

The Tri-State, or Joplin, zinc and lead mining district in south- western Missouri and adjoining, parts of Kansas and Oklahoma is one of the great mining districts of the world. It is in flat-lying or gently rolling agricultural country near industrial centers and coal, oil, and gas fields. The nearly horizontally, lying bedded rocks in which the ore bodies are found were originally limestone but are now largely chert containing minor percent- ages of dolomite and other minerals. The ore occurs in nearly vertical fis- sure zones, large and small, and in blanket (sheet-ground) deposits. The mining depth ranges from surface diggings to $50 feet. The average tenor of the ore mined, in recent years is much lower than that of ore produced in other large zinc and lead districts of the United States. Mining and mill- ing costs are low because of the shallowness of mining, amenability of ores to concentration, efficiency resulting from long experience of management and labor, and other factors. The operators comprise many small and medium-size producing companies and partnerships, as well as individuals and a few larger producers. About 7,000 men are employed in the mines and mills during normal industrial activity. The concentrates produced are sold f.o.b. the mill bins to local representatives of smelting companies at prices quoted on the Joplin market. The productive life of the district began with the discovery of lead near Joplin in 1848, but output was not large until after mining for zinc began near Granby in 1871. In most of the intervening years through 1945 the district produced more zinc than any other field, and it generally ranked third or fourth in the United States in lead production. Figures compiled from sources given later in this paper show a total output for the district from the beginning through 1945 of 20,755,020 tons of zinc concentrates and 3,334,057 tons of lead concentrates valued altogether at $1,110,058,581 in the mill bins. The output, in terms of recoverable metals, was 10,609,408 tons of zinc and 2,529,121 tons of lead, valued in all, at the average yearly market prices of the metals, at $1,691,282,419. During the 39 years (1907-1945) for which complete figures are available, the annual output of the district fluctuated from 23 to 66 percent of the total United States mine output of zinc and from 5 to 18 percent of the total lead; the averages for the period were 40 percent for zinc and 11 percent for lead. peak yearly production was attained in 1926, with an output of 423,800 tons of recoverable zinc and 102;117 tons of lead. Since that yoar the production rate has trended downward, accentuated at first by the depression in the thirties and later ameliorated somewhat under the stimulus of heavy demand and higher metal prices during World War II; the output in 1945 was 139,274 tons of recovorablo zinc and 23,556 tons of load. The above figures show the groat contribution made by the Tri-State district in the past toward the country's supplies of primary zinc and lead, cspecially zinc. The Waterview Tunnel comprises twin 2.4 km long 13.1 m internal diameter three lane road tunnels in Auckland, New Zealand. The City Rail Link (CRL) is a 3.45 km long, 6.24 m internal diameter twin rail tunnel underneath Auckland’s city center. This paper presents an overview of the tunnel geometry, segmental lining congurations, geometric constraints, performance criteria and functional reuirements for the large diameter Waterview Tunnels and smaller diameter CRL tunnels. Other key aspects, which include sustainability, innovations, construction performance and practical aspects are discussed and compared. Lessons learnt from these mega tunnelling projects are also presented.

Asbestos analysis is conceptually simple. The objective, in most environmental analyses, is to determine the number of asbestos fibers per unit area or volume in a sample. The sample may be a consumer product, an ambient air sample, or a water sample. This determination is complicated by several factors including sample collection and preparation, counting techniques, and the operational definition of asbestos in use. Hydrometallurgical processing of sulphide concentrates at medium temperature (150°C) produces residues, which contain valuable metals (Cu, Ni) as well as sulphur and iron bearing minerals and phases. The low solubility of iron during the medium temperature processing of sulphide ores can favour the formation of poorly crystalline, nano-scale iron oxide/oxyhydroxide phases. A better understanding of the formation and structure of these iron precipitates may elucidate key factors that would ultimately result in lower valuable metal losses and more stable leach residues. Residues from two medium temperature leach processes were characterized by Mössbauer Spectroscopy. Some portions of the Mössbauer Spectrum were suspected to be linked to jarosite but could not be positively identified as such. There was a broad range of disorder and substitution present in the material and solely attributing it to jarosite proved difficult. Various synthetic jarosites with Cu substitution were precipitated for Mössbauer analysis. These were then characterized by Quantitative X-Ray Diffraction (QXRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy (ICP-MS) and Mössbauer Spectroscopy. The Mössbauer Spectra of the synthetic jarosites is compared with that of the residues from medium temperature (150°C) sulphide concentrate leaching.

A spectrochemical method of slag analysis is descibed which utilizes fusion of the sample with a flux, then cooling and crushing to put all samples into a common form. The powder, is then fed onto adhesive tape and passed through a spark by means of a special device to provide very reproducible discharge conditions. Combined with a direct-reading optical emission instrument, this system provides speed and accuracy of antilysis heretofore unobtainable for. slag samples by any other method. THERE are many suggested methods for spectro-chemical analysis of slags. The most important are fusion-pellet methods and solution methods. In our company the fusion-pellet method has been used earlier, and is described by Lounamaa. W. H. Tingle and C. K. Matocha have made refinements of the pellet method.' A Committee of the British Iron and Steel Research Association has investigated different methods of spectrochemical analysis of slags. Its purpose was to formulate a method which would give the complete analysis in 30 min with an accuracy of ±3 pct. The committee recommends a solution technique, which was thought to correspond best to their requirements. The method to be described is a fusion-tape method. The sample is isoformed by fusion and grinding. The powder is analyzed with the tape technique. The tape machine and some of its applications are described earlier.4'5 The powder to be analyzed is continuously fed onto a moving adhesive tape, which passes through the spark gap. The sparks break through the tape and vaporize and excite the material to be analyzed. The most outstanding feature of the tape machine is its very high reproducibility. The concept of isoformation has been introduced earlier.= It means a pretreatment of the samples to make them uniform from the spectralanalytical point of view, i.e., cancelling systematic differences between the samples. The purpose of the isoformation is to reduce the influence of particle size, as well as chemical and mineral composition. Before describing the isoformation by fusion plus grinding, which is the purpose of this paper, a few words will be said about two other types of isoformations, i.e., grinding with buffer and ion exchange plus grinding as they have been considered during the application of the tape technique for slag analysis. Grinding with buffer might be a sufficient isoformation in some special cases, where the mineral composition is defined. The time of grinding must, however, be rather long, at least 5 to 10 min, even when using such an efficient mill as the Swing Mill from Messrs. Siebtechnik, Mühlheim, Germany. This type of isoformation is not recommended due to its limitations and due to the fact that the gain in time compared with the fusion technique is almost negligible. The principle of ion exchange plus grinding and some of its applications have been described.5 The following elements of interest in slag analysis can be determined in this way: Na, K, Cu, Mg, Ca, Ba, Zn, Pb, Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni. The chief ore of lithium is spodumene, a lithium-aluminum silicate containing up to 3 pct lithium. The preparation of lithium salts from spodumene is costly because of the low concentration of the metal and the difficulty of separating it from the other alkali metals present. Dr. Kroll's and Dr. Schlecten's recent paper1 has reviewed various methods proposed for preparation of lithium. It will be seen from this paper that the methods proposed to date have required one or another of the lithium salts as a raw material. The high cost of these salts has been the chief item of expense in the lithium metal produced. This situation has made it interesting to investigate the possibility of producing the metal directly from spodumene. When spodumene is calcined at 1000ºC in the presence of lime, lithium oxide is replaced in the ore as is evidenced by the fact that it may be leached from the reaction mixture with water.2 Free energy calculations suggested that lithium oxide might be reduced with aluminum or silicon and the lithium produced distilled from the reaction mixture by heating-to about 1000ºC in a vacuum. These facts taken together suggested that it might be possible to prepare lithium metal directly from spodumene by heating a mixture of the ore, lime, and a suitable reducing agent in vacuum and distilling off the lithium metal as formed. The Replacement of Li2O in Spodumene A series of experiments were undertaken to determine the ratio of lime to spodumene necessary to free substantially all the lithium oxide Present in the Ore. The spodumene used in these experiments was supplied by Foote Mineral Co. in the form of powder of about 200 mesh' Analysis of the spodumene was as follows: PCT SiO2......................... 62.7 Al2O3........................ 29.9 Li2o......................... 4.9 Na2O........................ 0.89 CaO......................... 0.75 MgO........................ 0.49 K2O......................... 0.44 Lime (cp —200 mesh) was added in various ratios to spodumene and thoroughly mixed in a ball mill. Two hundred gram samples of spodumene-lime mixtures were charged loosely in fireclay crucibles and held at 1000ºC in a gas-fired furnace for 5 hrs. The product in each case was ground to pass 140 mesh and then placed in a thimble in a soxhlet extractor. Extraction with water was carried on for 6 hrs. After this period the extract was reduced in volume by evaporation in order to precipitate dissolved lime and was then filtered and titrated with 1/4 normal hydrochloric acid. After correcting for residual calcium oxide in solution, the alkali present was calculated as lithium oxide. The results of these experiments are shown in Table I and Fig I. At lime-spodumene ratios less than 1.5, the products were invariably fused. At the ratio of 1.5 and above, the product was loosely sintered with little evidence of fusion. Phosphate rock is the primary source of phosphorus, an element necessary to all forms of life--plant, animal, and human. While phosphorus finds many uses in everyday life, it is an irreplaceable ingredient in all complete plant foods. With the present need for intensive farming, the fertility of the soil can be maintained only by external additions supplied by mines or other sources. A major consideration in any mining operation is to establish the economic and ecological impact of the development on the local population as well as the national interest. The Commodity Data Summaries, as published by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), is a ready reference concerning the importance of phosphate to the national and local interest. The summary of domestic and world pro¬duction is given in Table 1. During 19722 the demand for marketable phosphate rock exceeded the supply in the United States and the rest of the world. Domestic and world reserves are more than adequate to meet furture demands. Phosphate rock prices firmed and export prices increased, reflecting the change from oversupply to a shortage of phosphatic fertilizers. Demand is expected to exceed supply through 1973. New fertilizer plant capacity planned for 1973-74 will increase the production of phosphate rock by more than 5 million tons in the United States. Morocco and Spanish Sahara are scheduled to increase their production to 18 and 3 million tpy, respectively, within 2 to 3 years. The domestic phosphate rock production for 1972 was 40.8 million tons and 1973 was 42.1 million tons.' Industry, with government-supported programs, will emphasize restoration of mined land and solution of the colloidal slime disposal problem in Florida. The foregoing information comes by courtesy of The Division of Nonmetallic Minerals of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, January 1973. The summary gives a great deal of information but does not give a complete picture. There are many supporting industries which contrib¬ute to the area in which the mines are located. The figures shown in Table 1 deal with concentrates. To produce such concentrates many more tons of waste overburden and ore must be moved. Because of the competitive nature of the phosphate rock industry, data on concentration ratios not only are difficult to obtain but also are not for publication by companies. The concentration ratios vary from one mine to the next in Florida as well as in Tennessee and the western United States. To produce 42.4 million tons of phos¬phate rock in the United States required moving about 350 to 400 million tons of material. Domestic Industry. In 1972 some 26 firms and the Tennessee Valley Authority produced phosphate rock, with several firms produc¬ing from more than one mine. The distribution of marketable phos¬phate rock production was: Florida and North Carolina 82%; Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming 13%; and Missouri and Tennessee 5%. The value of this production was $223 million. The principal consuming classifications were: agriculture 75%, soaps and detergents 5%, plating and polishing 3%, animal feed supplements 4%, and miscellaneous applications 13%. Over 5,000 firms processed end-prod¬ucts for agricultural purposes. Uses of Phosphate Rock. The tendency in the United States has been to produce more phosphoric acid by the wet process, while the production of electric furnace phosphorus, triple superphosphate, and ordinary superphosphate has been on the decline. Exports of phosphate rock have been on the increase for several years and in 1971 reached 33% of total production. However, export sales of phos¬phate rock are expected to decline in the years ahead, both in total tons of sales and in percentage of production as domestic sales increase (see Table 2). The description and chemistry involved in the production of phos¬phate fertilizers is too complicated to be presented here. The Waggaman13 book is a very thorough reference on the subject involv¬ing production, utilization, and chemistry. The various operations generally have chemical plants near the dry plants or ship to associated chemical plants for further processing. Wet rock, dry rock, and ground dry rock of various grades are sold. In addition various grades of calcined phosphate rock, including defluorinated phosphate rock for animal food supplements, are pro¬duced. Various grades of phosphoric acid, superphosphate, triple suerphosphate, as well as diammonium phosphate, are produced. The study investigates the influence of water migration on the fluidity of fresh cemented paste backfill (CPB) with and without flocculant under variable shear rates. The research utilizes nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), rheological tests, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to analyze water migration, rheological properties, and microstructure evolution. The findings reveal that water migrates to more stable states as shear rate increases, and the addition of flocculant enhances water migration and increases shear stress and apparent viscosity. The study establishes relationships between water content and rheological parameters, providing insights into the flow characteristics of fresh CPB for pipeline transportation.

High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) are mostly used prior to pelletising processes to increase the specific surface area (SSA) of iron ore concentrate. For expressing SSA, the Blaine index is utilised as one of the most important dimensional properties of iron ore pellet feed. ISO 21283 is a standard test method that explains the manual of Blaine air-permeability apparatus for determination of this parameter. In this standard, the disaggregation method is based on passing the minus of 1 mm samples from the 0.150 mm sieve. The disaggregation process has an effective role on the results of Blaine airpermeability test especially for regrinding HPGR products. In this research, firstly the Blaine index of samples was measured without disaggregation. Following this, disaggregation was done by passing the minus of 1 mm samples through three sieves with different dimensions, 0.150, 0.090 and 0.045 mm, separately, and the Blaine index was calculated for each one. Finally, lab-mill with rubber balls, called Jar mill, was investigated as another option. Screen analysis and image analysis with SEM were performed to evaluate the effects of the sample's disaggregation on the size distribution and agglomeration of samples. The results showed that the disaggregation method with sieve size 0.150 mm, according to ISO 21283, was not applicable for HPGR products because the particles were still stuck together. In addition, the disaggregation method with the sieve size 0.045 mm or with Jar mill offered reasonable results. The stress associated with the high-dislocation layer at the surface of deformed aluminum crystals was measured by progressively polishing the specimen and determining the change in the initial flow stress when the specimen was reloaded. This surface stress increased linearly with strain in the Stage II and Stage III region. The depth to which the high-dislocation layer extends was found to be 0.0025 in. The influence of the surface layer on Stage I is discussed and it is shown that Stage I ends when, on the secondary slip system, the difference between the applied stress and the opposing stress due to the surface layer is equal to the critical resolved shear stress. In previous papers'-3 it was shown that the surface exerts a pronounced effect on the plastic-flow characteristics of metals. For fcc metals it was possible to increase the extent and decrease the slope of Stages I and II and decrease the work-hardening coefficient of Stage II by removing the surface of the specimen continuously during the deformation process.2,3 More recently,L it was shown that the activation energy for plastic deformation and the activated volume were also influenced by the surface. These changes were related to the existence of a high concentration of dislocations in the region near the surface of the deformed specimen and it was concluded' that the effective stress, T, acting on a dislocation was T = Ta-Ti-Ts [1] where 7, is the applied shear stress, Tj is the internal stress, and TS is the stress associated with the surface region containing the high concentration of dislocations. From Eq. [I] it is seen that the effective stress, 7, acting on a dislocation is a function of 7,. Therefore 7, becomes important in any description of the work-hardened state. In this paper the value of 7, as a function of strain and its variation with depth are reported for aluminum single crystals. In particular, it will be shown that the end of Stage I occurs when the net stress, 7, on the secondary slip system is equal to the critical resolved shear stress. To measure Ts, single crystals of aluminum were deformed in tension to various strains, whereupon the load was removed and a known amount of metal was removed by electrolytic polishing. The differ- ence between the final flow stress before the specimen was unloaded and the initial flow stress upon reloading is designated as ?Tp and is the decrease in the stress due to the removal of the surface layer in whole or in part. The value for Tp is taken equal to -Ts. EXPERIMENT PROCEDURE The details of the tensile apparatus, method of electrolytic polishing, and crystal preparation were the same as those used previously,1"3 The single crystals were 1/8 by 1/8 in. in cross section with a 3-in. gage length. The initial purity of the aluminum was 99.997 pet. The specimens were held in vacuo at temperatures 50°C below their melting points for 16 hr and furnace-cooled. Just prior to the application of the tensile stress the specimens were electrolytically polished to remove 0.004 in. from the thickness. This latter operation was conducted after the specimen was placed in the tensile apparatus. The tensile tests were conducted at a strain rate, i, of 10"5 sec-' and a temperature of 3°C. The aluminum crystals used for the determination of 7, are designated A1-3-12 and A1-116. The orientation of the various crystals used throughout the investigation is shown in Fig. 1. The Chinese coal industry is the largest coal producer in the world. The total production in I995 was 1.28 bnt. On the way towards introducing a market economic system, this mature industry is facing major challenges. The main problems are a large surplus of manpower, shortage of current assets and capital, low productivity, high casualties and a huge deficit. This paper discusses the present situation and the future developments in the Chinese coal industry. The current policy can be stated as ‘rapidly developing the state collieries and improving the village and private mines; integrated development to achieve an economic operating scale and encouraging a diversified economy; rapidly exploiting and developing in the North west and South west; promoting productivity and efficiency; welcoming multi-sources and types of investment; setting up coal exchange markets; and the careful control of resources and the environment'.

Under an approved remining program, mine operators can remine abandoned coal mines without assuming legal responsibility for treatment of the previously degraded water, as long as the discharging waters are not further degraded and other regulatory requirements are satisfied. A U.S. Bureau of Mines review of 105 remining permits in Pennsylvania indicates that remining results in substantial reclamation of abandoned mine lands, utilization of significant quantities of coal, and reduction of contaminant loads (acidity and iron) from degraded mine drainage discharges. Normality tests performed on the water quality and flow data indicate generally nonnormal distributions and extreme right-skewness, tending toward lower values. The water quality of underground coal mines was observed to be more highly degraded in terms of acidity, iron, and sulfate than that of surface coal mines. The optimum baseline sampling scenario is 12 months in duration at a frequency of one sample per month. Analysis of water quality and flow rates before and after remining indicates that a majority of the mines exhibited either no change or a significant decrease in pollution rate because of remining. The discharge flow rate was the dominant controlling factor when the post-remining contaminant load was significantly better or worse than the baseline (pre-remining) load.

X-ray diffraction was used to study the growth of antiphase domains in quenched (or "disordered&apos;? Cu3Au annealed in the range 300" to 385°C. Measurements of the long-range order parameter indicate that a high degree of order is established rapidly at these annealing temperatures. Average domain sizes obtained by Fourier analysis of the superlattice peak profiles show that antiphase domain growth is analogous to classical metallurgical grain growth (i.e.,fol-lows a D2 US kt relation). The activation energy for the growth process, 44 kcal per mole, indicates diffusion control. The anisotropy in the observed effective domain sizes from seven different superlattice peaks can be best accounted for by a configuration involving antiphase domain boundaries on {100 } and (111 ) planes, where the (100) boundary is the low-energy type, {lOO} Type I. The disappearance of the (111) antiphase domain boundary during domain growth is dif-fusion-controlled with an activation energy of 48.5 kcal per mole. On the other hand, the behavior of the parameter representing the amount of (100) Type I boundary indicates that there may be a conversion of the higher-energy boundary types to (100) Type I boundary during the growth process. THE order-disorder transformation in the alloy Cu3Au has been the subject of numerous experimental investigations over the past 40 years, most of which have involved measurements of convenient physical properties such as resistivity and hardness as a function of heat treatment. The interpretation of these data is difficult because measurements of this type have the disadvantage that they yield total changes resulting from several different atomic processes which may be occurring simultaneously. The present study was undertaken to establish by means of X-ray diffraction the kinetic behavior of one of these atomic processes, namely antiphase domain growth. In the completely ordered state Cu3Au has an L12 structure which can be described as an fcc type arrangement of atoms in which the gold atoms occupy the corner sites and copper atoms the face-centered sites. Three other equivalent unit cells can be formed by allowing two gold atoms to occupy opposite face-centered sites and copper atoms to occupy the remaining corner and face-centered sites. These four different unit cells are crystallographically related by a shift of 1/2<110>. Quenching from above the critical temperature (392°C) to room temperature retains the "disordered" structure-a "random" arrangement of copper and gold atoms having the fcc structure. Annealing the disordered alloy below the critical temperature causes ordering to occur through the nucleation and growth of ordered regions at different points throughout the crystal. These small ordered regions, each based on one of the four types of unit cell, grow by consuming the disordered material until they impinge to form a domain structure in which the domains are antiphase by a shift of 4(110). The boundaries between domains are called antiphase domain boundaries (APDB) and they have been found to lie primarily on &apos; {100} planes in highly ordered Cu3Au. Two types of APDB can occur on ( 100) planes. An example of an (001)1/2[110] shear type APDB is shown in Fig. I. Because of the layer of copper atoms separating the domains in this case, there are no near-neighbor violations across the boundary and it has a low surface ener This type of APDB will be referred to as {lOO} Type I. Fig. 2 shows an (001): [011] climb type APDB, (100) Type 11. This type of APDB can be described as resulting from removal of a (200) plane followed by a shift of 1/2<110> to bring the separated regions together. Near-neighbor violations across (100) Type I1 APDB make it a high-energy boundary. There are numerous other possible APDB configurations; however, it is only worth noting that shear type APDB can be produced on the (111) plane by motion of a normal fcc dislocation with Burgers vector 1/2<110> through the ordered structure. A (111); [110] shear type APDB is shown in Fig. 3. Again, because of the near-neighbor violations this type of APDB has a higher energy than the (100) Type I APDB.

"This paper suggests that with the settlement of long-term contracts of fifteen years' duration, with prospects of extension, the coal mining industry has, for the first time, a complete commercial justification for large-scale planning.The labour costs of coal production over past years are analyzed and, with the acceptance of the premise that the basic shift rates are certain to rise in the years to come, the paper suggests that forward planning should provide &r capital investment to make a traditionally labour-dense industry into a capital-dense industry.Automated methods of manpower deployment and timekeeping and the monitoring of all equipment back to a central control point are discussed as ail-important means of obtaining maximum utilization of high-cost capital investment.Principles of payment of the work-force, and the utilization of equipment 24 hours a day, seven days a week and the maximum number of days a year, are dealt with as means of achieving maximum capital utilization. Some of the new technical underground and coal preparation problems which will undoubtedly result from the concentration of workings and maximum machine utilization are discussed, and the author makes suggestions as to how these might be solved.In short, the author predicts that if the coal mining industry is prepared to recognize the problems and invest in modern equipment backed by highly trained staff. then the outcome will justify the high capital investment involved. He stresses the importance of human communications in achieving this end."
