"Due to the time-consuming nature of froth testing in a laboratory environment, practical limitations require the development of a method of applying a single set of performance test data (Visintainer and Whitlock, 2012) obtained for a single froth pump at a given speed to a range of froth pump speeds and sizes, % air content and liquid viscosities. Head, efficiency and flow all vary as functions of both liquid viscosity and air content. As such, it is necessary to develop a technique that can be used to interpolate from existing test data in order to predict froth performance for pumps of various sizes running at variable speeds. Details of the technique developed in order to achieve this goal, as well as the insights gained from analysis of the resulting regressions, are discussed. Additionally, comparisons are made between the performance predictions of this test-derived method and those of the Hydraulic Institute standard for the effects of liquid viscosity on centrifugal pump performance (ANSI, 2010).IntroductionPump performance data (Visintainer and Whitlock, 2012) has been collected for a froth pump using an experimental loop outfitted with an array of pressure transducers, mass flow meters, an inverted U-loop, magnetic flow meter and an assortment of other instrumentation. Experiments were performed on pure water, water and air, pure corn syrup, and corn syrup and air. Data was obtained for % air contents of 0-30% and viscosities of 1- 15,000 cSt at eight specific valve positions (eight different flows as a percentage of best efficiency flow points) and the viscosity was changed by allowing the system temperature to increase during testing. The test pump is a 710-mm diameter impeller, GIW HVF, open shrouded, vented design that has its discharge axis oriented at 45° upward from the horizontal. This report is based on existing reports and recently gathered field data. It discusses mineral resource potential of Tertiary playas in the Fort Irwin region. An estimated 1.3 million tons of measured salt "reserves", and 20 million tons of indicated salt resources, have been identified north of the fort. Other indicated resources include 300,000 tons of celestite, 800,000 tons of gypsum, and 10 million tons of selenite. Zeolitic tuff was mined south of Fort Irwin from 1978 to 1984, and unexplored occurrences are widespread. Calcium-bentonite is mined near Barstow, and more may exist, including valuable sodium-and lithium-based bentonites.

The Friedensville zinc mine of The New Jersey Zinc Company is located about four miles south of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in the Saucon Valley, an infolded and down faulted block of Cambro-Ordovician carbonate sediments surrounded by hills of pre-Cambrian gneiss and Cambrian quartzite except where breached by Saucon Creek at its entrance into the Lehigh River. The Beekmantown formation of lower Ordovician age is the host for zinc and limonite ores, the former occurring in the lower dolomitic portion thereof and the latter in the upper interbedded dolomite and limestone portion of the section. The Beekmantown is overlain unconformably by the Jacksonburg of middle Ordovician age and according to Miller (2) underlain conformably by about 2500 feet of Cambrian dolomites and 200 feet of the basal Cambrian Hardyston quartzite. Igneous rocks, younger than the Cambro-Ordovician carbonate rocks, are absent in the vicinity of the ore deposits. The major structure is a N60°E-trending saddle-shaped doubly plunging anticline overturned to the north. A syncline lies to the north of the anticline. A thrust fault of substantial displacement repeats the south limb of the anticline. The ore consists of sphalerite and pyrite, along with gangue dolomite and quartz, filling and replacing the sedimentary type matrix of a strata-bound solution collapse breccia in the dolomitic portion of the lower Beekmantown. This breccia was produced in pre-Jacksonburg time as a consequence of uplift, erosion, and development of a karst topography and subsurface drainage system in the Beekmantown. Deposits of both zinc and limonite are present on the vertical north limb, on the crest and on the gently dipping (25°) south limb of the Friedensville anticline; consequently, there is no preferred structural setting for mineralization. Rather this distribution supports the view that the folding is post-ore. Features confirming this view are the development of flow cleavage in the breccia matrix, the deformation of some of the sphalerite, and the fracturing of the pyrite mineralization therein. There is nothing to indicate that the age of mineralization is other than Ordovician and older than Taconic deformation. In the absence of intrusive igneous activity younger than the ore host, the writer suggests that submarine volcanic exhalations associated with the volcanic activity recorded in the eastern eugeosynclinal facies of the Ordovician may be the source of the metal ions.

More than twenty years ago Sasol, ISCOR, and some parastatals played a major role in ensuring that South Africa had sufficient technical skills. When the economy became tight and business and government were pressurized to decrease costs, the first budgets that were reduced were the training budgets. It seemed to be too expensive and too time-consuming to train apprentices. According to Stacey2, this is a major strategic issue facing the mining industry in South Africa. Two factors added to the shortage of skills challenge: ? Skills erosion and job losses ? Artisans ? currently the economy produces 5 000 but the need is 12 500 ? Level of mechanization in South Africa less than 10 per cent ? Average age of operators and artisans is 50 ? Greater awareness of occupational health effects of hand-held drilling. ? The mineral olivine has been the subject of continued research by various authors. Paik (1967) conducted infrared and flotation studies of the adsorption of sodium alkyl benzene sulfonates on olivine. These studies are of interest from two points of view. First, in the metallurgical field it is of interest to understand the mechanism of silicate flotation using sulfonate collectors and second to a hydrologist studying the pollution of surface or subsurface waters it is of interest to study the reactions taking place when water plus sulfonates encounter a porous (silicate) medium. On the basis of Paik's study he was able to postulate a possible mechanism for the attachment of RSO3 (sulfonate radical) to the olivine surface. Parks (1969) has been studying the important influence of the structure of a silicate such as olivine on its dissolution mechanism and its related surface charge. Also Luce, a student of Parks (1964, 1965) has been studying the kinetics of dissolution of olivine using the techniques of direct solution analysis and infrared analysis. Certainly a classic in the study of silicate dissolution is the work of Murata (1940) on the reaction of orthosilicates (olivine in particular) with strong acid solutions. Many authors (Dejú and Bhappu, 1966. 1967. 1968, Dejú, 1969; Rhoades and Krueger. 1968, and Faust and blunter, 1967) have reported studies of the behavior of silicates immersed in water (especially orthosilicates) and have found that there is an exchange of cations from the silicate surface for H+ from the water. Studies by Dejú and Bhappu have also included the system olivine-water-amine.

The increasing energy crisis, coupled with stringent environ- mental regulations, has created new demands for high capacity materials handling systems with unit train transporting and continuing surveillance of quality control. Effective and efficient methods of material conveyance are through high speed, high volume conveyor belts with the monitoring of quality through the utilization of automatic sampling. When we speak of high speed, high volume belt discharges we are referring to speed ranges from 600 to 750 FPM and volumes as high as 5500 TPH. To achieve the optimum operating sampling system for high capacity belt discharges, it is imperative that two major design characteristics be investigated and evaluated; namely technical analysis of operating conditions through application of ASTM design criteria and practical experience in the selection of equipment and the design of related components. The task of obtaining a sample of reasonable weight to represent an entire lot presents a number of problems and emphasizes the necessity for using standard sampling procedures.

Grain boundary grooving has been studied in chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten under a variety of conditions using high vacuum techniques and tantalum -gettered argon. The average surface free energy of solid chromium, and the chromium-liquid silver interface free energy were respectively found to be 2200 ± 250 and 500 i 130 ergs per sq cm from groove formation kinetics and estimates of pertinent volume difffusion coefficients. The results for chromium were unffected by variations in interstitial content ranging from 0.003 to 0.09 pct C, or 0.003 to 0.03 pct O. Surface diffusion is the primary mechanism of groove formation in chromium under 1 atm argon at 1200" to 140O°C, and is essentially unaffected by 0.003 to 0.09 pct C, 0.003 to 0.03 pct O , metastable nitrogen contents up to -0.01 pct, and up to 2 torr Ag vapor. At higher temperatures, the major mechanism is volume diffusion in argon or evaporation-condensation in stutic vacuum. Surface diffusion occurs in molybdenum at 0.5 to 0.96 and in tungsten at 0.5 to 0.9 of the absolute melting tempera -ture by a single mechanism, possibly by the migration of single adatoms or vacancies. Results were slightly affected by up to 23 tory Sn vapor, and in molybdenum were essentially unaffected by 0.5 Ti or carbon in the range 0.002 to 0.02 pct. Volume difffusion through the liquid is the mechanism of groove formation in chromium-liquid silver at 1200" to 1400°C and in molybdenum-, Mo-0.5Ti-, and tungsten-liquid tin at 1200" to 2000°C. The solid-liquid interface free energies involved were estimated from grooving kanetics. WHEN a grain boundary intersects a solid surface, a groove tends to form along the line of intersection at temperatures above about half the absolute melting point (0.5 TM). The groove progressively grows by preferential atomic migration either by diffusion or evaporation. Establishment of a groove angle occurs in accordance with the grain boundary and surface free energies involved. The motivation for groove formation is a reduction in the total surface free energy of the system. This study is a continuation of previous work on thermal grooving of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten.&apos; The temperature ranges were extended, and the effect of metallic and interstitial impurities was evaluated. The results were such that certain interface free energies and surface self-diffusion coefficients were deduced from the grooving kinetics. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Materials and Preparation. As indicated in Table I, the 0.05-0.08-cm-thick chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten sheet used was nominally 99.99 pct after recrystallization. Extruded chromium rod,&apos; prepared from iodide process crystals, was warm rolled to sheet at 700°C. Sheet of three Cr-0 impurity alloys containing up to 0.03 pct 0 was prepared by warm rolling arc melted, extruded, and swaged rod. Two Cr-C impurity alloys containing up to 0.09 pct C were made by equilibrating unalloyed chromium with a known amount of CH4 for 24 hr at 1150°C in previously evacuated quartz capsules. Chromium containing nominally 0.015 and 0.06 pct N was similarly prepared by equilibration with NH3. The sheet was recrystallized to give a stable grain size about equal to the sheet thickness. Molybdenum and Mo-O.5Ti were recrystallized in a tantalum resistance furnace 1 hr at 1 x lo-5 torr at 2300" and 220O°C, respectively. Tungsten was similarly annealed for 1 hr at 2500°C. Chromium and its impurity alloys were outgassed at 1100°C and recrystallized 1 hr at 1700°C under 1 atm Ar. Except for nitrogen, the impurity content stayed roughly constant. Nitrogen in both alloys was reduced to <0.001 pct. In fact, over 80 pct of the added nitrogen was lost after outgassing at llOO°C and annealing sheet 1 hr at 1300°C in argon in the presence of tantalum. Such a rapid loss can be rationalized since -2 torr N are required for equilibrium with 0.04 pct N in solution,3 while the equilibrium pressure is ~10-5 torr over tantalum at 1300°C.4 The recrystallized sheet was cut into small coupons which were metallographically ground and polished on one side with a minimum of grain boundary relief. The surface roughness was on the order of 0.01 µ. The tin and silver used were nominally 99.999 spec-trographically pure. After being outgassed at 1100°C and equilibrated in a molybdenum crucible for 0.5 hr at 1800°C in argon, the tin contained 3 ppm 0, <0.3 ppm N, and 0.1 ppm H. Following outgassing at 900°C and equilibration in a chromium crucible 1 hr at 1400°C in argon, the gas content of the silver was 1 ppm O, <0.5 ppm N, and 0.3 ppm H. Grooving Under Argon or Vacuum. All specimens were placed in unsealed containers made from rod or sheet of the same alloy, thereby enabling the polished surface to achieve gas-solid equilibrium. The annealing fixtures are shown in Fig. 1. The specimen was placed in a resistance furnace with a tantalum or Ta-10W heating element plus tantalum fixtures or radiation shields. Chromium was outgassed at 1100°C, and molybdenum and tungsten were outgassed at 1900°C to 1 x l0-5 torr or at the grooving temperature, whichever was lower. Due to its unique properties, chrysotile asbestos is used in many diversified applications. In recent years, a better understanding of the structure and properties of chrysotile has evolved due to the research efforts of many investigators. A summary of the results of some of these investigations is given. An attempt is made to show the relationships between the properties of chrysotile and its crystal structure. Examples taken from the literature are cited in which methods have been developed for modifying the properties to improve the performance of asbestos in some applications. These include the effect of pH on the positive zeta potential and the addition of sodium silicate to improve filtration characteristics. The dehydroxylation and formation of forsterite when chrysotile is heated are also discussed.

The Bureau of Mines determined the factors involved in the corrosion of starting sheets used in the production of electrolytic zinc with the ultimate purpose of adapting zinc starting sheets to commercial practice . Under present practice , zinc is electrodeposited on aluminum cathodes and subsequently stripped for melting . The use of zinc instead of aluminum would eliminate the need to strip the deposit , thereby reducing the cost of handling and melting it , but zinc has not been suitable because it was too vulnerable to the corrosive attack of the electrolyte . Serious attack was found to be limited to the areas of the cathodes situated immediately above the surface of the electrolyte and to re - entrant corners . It was possible to avoid solution - level corrosion by immersing the starting sheets completely , exposing only a relatively heavy suspension member to solution - level attack . Zinc starting sheets could be made as reliable as aluminum and could be continued in residence for periods up to 39 days . Periods as long as a week were feasible under conditions similar to those found in commercial practice . A test of zirconium as a starting - sheet material showed that it promoted corrosion of the deposit to a lesser extent than aluminum and that the deposit adhered less tenaciously . These two properties lend themselves to the development of ways to strip deposits mechanically from zirconium starting sheets . Titanium was unsuitable for use as a starting - sheet material .

"The United States coal mining industry is currently experiencing a decline in both demand and commodity price while facing implementation of more stringent air and water pollution regulations. Company profits have decreased significantly, forcing several major companies to declare bankruptcy. The industry was required to adapt to survive. Many of these companies have adjusted by abandoning mines; the last two decades have seen a drastic decrease in the number of mines. To discover the primary causes of this downturn, three major aspects must be studied: properties of abandoned mines, commodity history and regulatory impact. Trends since 1994Each year, U.S. coal mines are required to submit data on a variety of categories to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). This data include administrative records, production values and information regarding the attributes of the mined material and the mine itself. Each year since 1996, EIA has released a report summarizing the data from two years prior. Additionally, MSHA maintains a database containing a collection of all the most current data. These resources are the primary sources for the figures included in this article. There are several items to note regarding this data:1. The EIA reports from 2016 and 2017 were not released at the time of writing this report.2. The MSHA data set is actively maintained as information is provided. This means the data for 2016 is from June 27, 2016 and data for 2017 is from Aug 24, 2017. All other points represent the end of-year values.3. Each of the figures only includes data pertaining to active mines. EIA defines active mines as both active and temporarily idled mines, and inactive mines as nonproducing and abandoned mines. MSHA separates all four into separate categories, though this paper combines the MSHA values according to the EIA definition for the purpose of comparison."

This review work reports the recovery of potassiumfromdifferent rocks and mineral sources. The global demand for potassiumis rising consistently due to the growth of agricultural production. A major portion of the world potassium production is consumed in making of fertiliser; however, other uses include those in pharmaceutical, glass, ceramic, food and detergent industries. The availability of soluble potash minerals (sylvite, kainite and carnallite) in different countries like Canada, USA, Israel and Russia makes them as major potash producers, whereas agricultural-based countries like Liberia, Somalia, Central African Republic, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia including India meet their potassium requirement through import only. On the contrary, the availability of huge potassium-bearing rocks/minerals (like nepheline syenite, feldspar, mica, glauconitic sandstone) in these countries containing around 4–17% K2O would be a prospective for commercial production of potassium. The potassium recovery from minerals/rocks is very complicated due to the uniform distribution of potassium throughout the crystal structure. Different physico-chemical separation methods like bioleaching, chemical leaching, flotation and roast leaching have been discussed for the successful recovery of potash values from these rocks/minerals. However, the recovery of potassium from hugely available seawater using the chemical precipitation, solvent extraction,membrane separation and ionic exchangemethods is not cost-effective due to the low concentration of potassium.

Ores are becoming extremely variable with mineralogy and hardness disturbing the grinding and flotation circuits. The current grinding and flotation sensors provide large amounts of data for process optimisation. Adding the right context and operational events augments operational knowledge for proactive actions to improve the performance of the grinding and flotation circuits. A data-driven strategy is needed to enable operations, maintenance, and business personnel to quickly and easily take corrective action when abnormal conditions occur. A digital plant template transforms data into operational insights in real-time. It uncovers the hidden, idle and downtime losses. By measuring and managing these unproductive times, people find new ways of avoiding them, improving the profitability of the plant. The information created by the real time analytics enables the calculation of recovery in real time and develops predictive analytics models to find the best operating condition based on the type of ore currently mined. The creation of new workflows and collaboration between mining and concentrator plant and the enterprise, including services providers, are enabled. A grade recovery model is used to identify the best operating conditions in real-time. An optimal Gaudin size distribution shape is used to find the grinding operating conditions that optimise the metal recovery in the rougher sections of the mineral processing plant. Sensors in the flotation circuits enable estimation of metal recovery and determine the optimal froth depth and aeration profiles, using an industrial air holdup flotation model. The implementation of a recovery/grind strategy with industrial examples in non-ferrous metal concentrator is presented in the paper. The first hydrothermal mineral deposits found at a seafloor spreading center were discovered in the Red Sea by multi-national research vessels between 1963 and 1965. At that time, the deposits were considered a special case related to continental rifting and an early stage of opening of an ocean basin. Since that time, examples of almost all major varieties of volcanic- and sediment-hosted hydrothermal deposits associated with basaltic rocks in the geologic record have been found at present spreading centers. Review of over 100 hydrothermal mineral occurrences presently known at oceanic ridges and rifts indicates that a range of deposit sizes from small to large (> 1 x 106 tonnes) occurs at all seafloor spreading rates. However, larger deposits but fewer per unit length of spreading axis appear to form at slow- than at intermediate- to fast-spreading centers based on available data. Larger deposits are more common in sediment-hosted than in volcanic-hosted settings regardless of spreading rate. A spectrum of hydrothermal deposit varieties (stratiform, stockwork and disseminated sulfides; various forms of sulfate, carbonate, silicate, oxide and hydroxide deposits) occurs in almost all of the tectonic settings. High-intensity, ore-forming, subseafloor, hydrothermal convection systems that conserve heat and mass and concentrate hydrothermal precipitates are extremely localized by anomalous physical and chemical conditions relative to nearly ubiquitous low-intensity hydrothermal activity at and flanking seafloor spreading axes at all spreading rates. Bench-scale experiment~ by the Bureau of Mines showed the gross effect of retention times ranging from 0.1 to 14.5 minutes on the conversion of high-volatile C bituminous coal to liquids and gases. The uncatalyzed coal was hydrogenated at 400°, 450°, and 538° C. and 500, 1,000, and 2,000 p.s.i.g. The percent coal conversion increased rapidly during the initial 3 minutes and asymptotically approached a maximum within 7 minutes at all conditions. Reasonably good correlations of coal conversion with time, pressure, and temperature were obtained. Temperatures up to 900° C. and retention times of about 1 minute are recommended for future experiments with the objective of producing only gaseous hydrocarbons and partially devolatilized coal suitable for use as solid fuel. The reactor contained 13 semicircular ledges, and the retention time was controlled by the rotation of scrapers which swept the coal from ledge to ledge. Only coal feeds that did not adhere to the internal mechanism could be used.

WITH the advent of nodular iron as an engineering material, considerable interest has been shown in developing this material for various applications. Generally the strength, hardness, or ductility are the more common properties used for design purposes but occasionally applications involving a knowledge of the thermal conductivity of the material is required. A search of the literature showed, rather surprisingly, that relatively little work has been done on this property for all types of cast iron. Insufficient data are available on thermal and electrical conductivities to develop the Weidemann-Franz ratio, or the Lorentz relationship, for estimation purposes. There are no data on nodular irons and the published data on malleable irons are quite sketchy. For these reasons the conductivity of the group of nodular irons listed in Table I were measured. Irons I to IV were made in such a fashion as to maintain the carbon and alloy content essentially the same while varying the silicon content. Test specimens were cut from the mid-section of 4-in. keel castings. Iron V is a commercial casting of nodular iron. The test specimen of this iron was cut from the center of a large cast billet 3x10x26 in. All alloys were tested in the as-cast condition. A microstructural examination showed that each iron had spheroidal graphite but the size and distribution varied with the silicon content of the iron. The spheroid size decreased while the number of graphite nodules increased as the silicon content of the iron was increased. The matrix structures of each iron consisted of pearlite and ferrite with the proportions varying from predominantly pearlite in the low-silicon iron to mostly ferrite in the high-silicon iron. The commercial heat, iron V, was predominantly pearlite probably because of its higher manganese and phosphorus content. Two methods for measuring the thermal conductivity were used. The first was a modification of the techniques described by Powell and Hickman and Van Dusen and Shelton,² the second method was a simpler technique described by Jakob and Hawkins." Since the agreement of both methods as tested on two sets of duplicate samples was excellent, the simpler experimental technique was used. The results of the measurements are given in Table II along with a summary of the microstructural constituents. These conductivity data indicate that as the percentage of silicon increases there is a corresponding decrease in the thermal conductivity even though the structure is changing from pearlitic to ferritic. Such a change in microstructure is usually accompanied by an increase in conductivity. A third factor involved in the behavior of these irons is the size and distribution of the graphite nodules. The relative amounts of graphite do not change greatly but the size and distribution do. Generally graphite improves the conductivity but in the present case such an effect is probably masked by the alloying effect from the silicon and its dispersion through the matrix. The thermal conductivity of the nodular irons studied is less than that of regular foundry irons by some 10 to 30 pct and is less than that of regular malleable irons.&apos; The cause of the decreased conductivity is probably the more highly alloyed fer-rites obtained in these irons and the changed mode of distribution of the graphite as compared to the regular foundry irons. Heat stress is a major concern for the health, safety and productivity of miners working in hot and humid underground mines. At greater depth, heat inside underground mines increases due to geothermal gradient, heat released from high-capacity machinery, exposed rock surface, auto-compression of air, human metabolism, etc. Prolonged physical work in thermal environments severely affects the health, safety and efficiency of miners. In order to address this important issue, a systematic literature review (SLR) has been conducted. This SLR aimed to identify the research gap in the area of heat stress effect on underground miners and its control. An extensive literature search was carried out on numerous digital databases, grey literature and conference proceedings to identify relevant research work for this review. Moreover, the impactful studies, methodologies and preventive measures undertaken during the past five decades on the effect of heat stress on underground miners were retrospectively analysed, with a broader aim to explore the need for further research on this pertinent topic. Overall, 571 references were identified from the literature review, out of which 51 research articles addressing the sources of heat, heat stress effects on miners, heat stress indices and control measures for heat stress in underground mines were selected as primary papers for detailed review. Pre-developed fatigue is one of the prime causes of health hazard, safety and productivity loss of miners working in underground high heat stress zones. Hence, development of a better heat stress index integrating personal, environmental parameters and pre-developed fatigue (PDF) of miners is essential.

The use of saline water, a product of the sea water osmosis process, for the processing of the mineral from the Bayovar Mine in Peru, is part of the process of final disposal of the studied tailings. In this sense, this paper presents an experimental program implemented for the correct evaluation of this fine low-density phosphate tailings, the behavior of six solids contents prepared in the laboratory with limits between the range 8.5% to 21% were analyzed. The results achieved, from settling and consolidation tests by hydraulic consolidation test, attested to the effectiveness, in addition to being representative, based on the analyzes and comparisons instituted and the definition of the compressibility and consolidation characteristics of the phosphate tailings of the evaluation.

Wall control at the Pipe Open Pit is of primary importance in ensuring the long-term stability of the operation, while keeping costs to a minimum. Blasting techniques have been adapted to the variations in competence and structure of the wall rocks. A portion of the perimeter wall is being developed in incompetent peridotite . A recent change in pit slope design provides a wide safety berm on alternate benches. A support program which consists of pinning the crests of wide berms with vertical reinforced concrete dowels and horizontal bolting of walls shows evidence of increasing the stability of the pit walls. This paper describes the blasting and support techniques which are contributing to successful wall control in the Pipe operation.

El presente texto describe el proceso e importancia del programa de seguridad industrial en el país. Dicho estudio comprende la legislación, definiciones, factores que intervienen en la ocurrencia de accidentes industriales (defectos físicos del trabajador, antecedentes, actos inseguros y condiciones peligrosas), estadísticas de accidentes comprendidas entre los años 1958 - 1959 y costo de accidentes industriales. Asimismo, se recomienda que el Perú comtemple la creación del Consejo Nacional de Seguridad para un establecimiento y control de reglamentos para la prevención de accidentes.
