The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, investigated methods to recover valuable rare-earth materials from NdFeB magnet scrap. Although several processing techniques were evaluated" the best separation of rare earths from the NdFeB magnet ,scrap was obtained by sulfuric acid dissolution followed by precipitation of recyclable rare-earth salts. Both sodium and ammonium intermediate double-salt precipitates' that can be converted to a variety of useful neodymium products were investigated. The sodium system showed a neodymium recovery of 98 pct, while the ammonium system yielded 70 pct during double-salt precipitation. The iron-rich effluent following the rare-earth recovery was treated to produce sodium and ammonium iron jarosites that can be disposed of or converted to hematite. By following this new procedure, many materials handling and economic disadvantages found with fluoride or oxalate direct precipitation were avoided.

THE proposal has been made in a bill introduced into Congress at the last session by Representative Jones of Michigan that an import duty of 6 c. per lb. shall be placed on copper. This action is urged after eighty years of prosperity for the industry in this country; during most of which copper has been on the free list, and during all of which a tariff would have been without real effect. To comprehend the general situation upon which this action would be imposed, we must refer to the past history of the industry and its trends at the present time. The following table supplies us with a picture of the physical growth of the industry in this country and its relation to that of the world as a whole down to Jan. 1, 1921:

"The research is aimed at solving the problem of increasing the extraction of gold from refractory ores, which are the main source of growth in gold production in the next decades. The purpose of the research is the development and scientific substantiation of the reagent modes for flotation extracting of gold from refractory ores using eco-friendly low-cost herbal modifiers (HM), providing increase in gold recovery and quality of gold concentrates. In the course of research laboratory techniques for the preparation of experimental samples of HM were developed, which included the sequence of operations of grinding Heraclium leaves and stems grinding, 2-stages extraction at a temperature of 50-60 °C, short-term ultrasonic treatment, filtration and subsequent unification of extracts. According to the developed method, the experimental samples of HM and conducted research were tested to analyze their sorption and flotation activity related to the extraction of gold from refractory gold ores.New data on adsorption and flotation properties of Heraclium stems and leaves extracts (HSE) in selective flotation of Au-sulfide minerals were obtained using UV-spectroscopy, scanning electronic and laser microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The dimensions and shapes of adsorbed hydrophilic films of herbal reagents were identified and mechanism of formation of stable insoluble compounds on the surface of minerals in flotation was explained.Research flotation tests carried out on samples of refractory gold ore of one of Russia deposits showed the possibility of effective use of herbal modifiers to improve qualitative and quantitative indicators of enrichment compared with the standard reagent regime. New reagent modes, using herbal modifiers in an amount of 5 to 10 ml of the extract (300 - 600 g / t, respectively) improves the quality of the concentrate: gold content attains 14.7 g / t, 1.34 times higher than in the baseline experiment and provides a gain of 3.13% extraction.The developed reagent regime with herbal modifiers is the author's original design, patented (patent of the Russian Federation) and have no analogues in the world of mineral processing. Actual application of new plant extracts as modifiers in flotation of sulfide minerals is the possibility of replacing of highly toxic chemical compounds by environmentally safe substances of plant origin. Implementation of the developed methods of extracting gold from refractory minerals with herbal modifiers will help to improve gold recovery at 3-5% and the quality concentrate of not less than 1.2 times, leading to higher productivity and a reduction of the negative man-made effects on the environment ."

"Gold-silver mineralization at Red Mountain (1992 resource of 2.5 million tonnes grading 12.8 g/t Au and 38.1 g/t Ag) occurs within several discrete zones within a folded sequence of Middle to Late Triassic Triassic sedimentary rocks, Early Jurassic volcaniclastic and pyroclastic rocks, and Early Jurassic intrusions. Three phases of Early Jurassic sills and stocks collectively comprise the Golds/ide intrusions: (1) irregular bodies of medium-grained hornblende monzodiorite (Hillside porphyry); (2) hornblende-biotite + quartz porphyritic monzodiorite to quartz monzodiorite (Golds/ide porphyry; U-Pb zircon ages of 197.1 + 1.9 Ma); and (3) biotite porphyritic hornblende monzodiorite sills (Biotite porphyry). Contact breccias and igneous breccia dikes are common features of the Golds/ide intrusions. Chemical similarities and equivalent ages of volcanic rocks and intrusions, and the presence of intrusive clasts in volcanic rocks suggest that the intrusions are feeders to overlying volcanic units.Hydrothermal alteration affects all pre-Tertiary rocks on Red Mountain, including all phases of the Golds/ide intrusions. Several shallow-dipping alteration zones are developed sequentially above a propylitic quartz stockwork/molybdenum zone. These include: (1) sericite-quartz-pyrite alteration (pyrite-dominant alteration); (2) chlorite-K-feldspar-sericite-titanite alteration with disseminated and vein pyrrhotite (pyrrhotite-dominant alteration); and (3) brown to black tourmaline veins and K-feldspar-pyrite-titanite-actinolite alteration. Anomalous gold(> 0.3 g/t) mineralization is developed at the transition from the pyrite to the pyrrhotite dominant alteration over a > 1 km2 area. Within this anomalous zone, high-grade (3 g/t to 20 g/t Au) gold-silver mineralization occurs in 5 m to 29 m thick, semi-tabular pyrite + pyrrhotite stockworks with intense sericitic alteration and surrounding disseminated sphalerite + pyrrhotite.Stratigraphic, spatial and geochronologic relations and alteration zoning indicate that mineralization formed in a subvolcanic environment at the top of the Golds/ide intrusions and at the base of the Early Jurassic volcanic pile. The Golds/ide porphyry is interpreted to be the mineralizing intrusion. The alteration zoning, molybdenum-copper mineralized quartz stockworks, extensive Ksilicate and tourmaline alteration, and the relationship with a hypabyssal porphyritic intrusion show similarities to many porphyry systems."

The Bureau of Mines investigated pegmatite and granite formations at Copper Mountain, Fremont County, Wyoming, for recovery of tantalum and niobium. Sampling of surface exposures identified about 1.27 mega tonne of pegmatite resource material ranging between 0.02 and 0.04% Ta20, and 0.007% Hb20,. Beneficiation studies were conducted involving coarse-grained and fine grained pegmatite samples. Over 80% recovery of the coarse-grained tantalite was achieved in a concentrate averaging over 45% combined tantalum-niobium oxide. Lower concentrate grades and recoveries resulted from the treatment of fine-grained pegmatite.

As the high-grade copper deposits in the world become depleted, there is an increasing focus on developing lower-grade ores which contain problematic impurities such as arsenic. Indeed, many high-arsenic ore bodies remain undeveloped because of their high arsenic levels. Separation of arsenic from copper at the beneficiation stage is difficult using the current processing techniques and invariably copper concentrates produced from these ores contain high arsenic levels, sometimes so high as to make them unacceptable to copper smelters. New, sustainable approaches are needed to allow development of high-arsenic copper ores while at the same time minimizing arsenic dispersion into the biosphere. The most promising route for separating arsenic from copper at the flotation stage centers on the use of pulp potential control. In recent years CSIRO has demonstrated at laboratory scale, for a number of high-arsenic copper ores, that crude flotation separation between arsenic-bearing minerals and copper-bearing minerals can be made. The differences in specific minerals responses to changes in pulp potential and pulp pH are exploited for this separation. Such separations nominally produce a low-arsenic high-copper concentrate and a low-copper high-arsenic concentrate. The former can be smelted without penalty, while the latter requires further treatment to capture and stabilize the arsenic and to recover the residual copper. Consideration has now been given to treatment options for the high-arsenic low-copper product. A pyrometallurgical option, involving a low temperature roast to selectively fume off the arsenic and leave a high-copper calcine, coupled with an arsenic stabilization step, has been demonstrated in the laboratory, and a preliminary techno-economic evaluation shows the process to be economically favorable. These results were recently published. CSIRO has now investigated an alternate hydrometallurgical option, involving atmospheric alkaline sulphide leaching of the high-arsenic product, where the arsenic is selectively dissolved leaving a copper-rich leach residue. The leaching testwork was carried at on the same high-arsenic low-copper material used in the roasting studies, enabling a techno-economic comparison of the alternate roasting and leaching treatment options to be made. The alkaline leaching work is briefly described and the results of the process option comparison presented and discussed. Microflotation tests were conducted with a modified Hallimond tube equipped with a fritted glass disk and magnetic stirrer to determine whether the results would support an equation that predicts a linear relationship between particle size and the reciprocal of particle density in water for a specified flotation recovery in a given time. Data obtained with the tube for either hydrophilic or hydrophobic solids fit the equation satisfactorily. It was also shown that the natural flotability of molybdenite is somewhat less than that of elemental sulphur and that sodium dithionite is a good depressant for sulphurised pyrite. In addition, it was found that the untreated pyrite and galena used in the study were hydrophilic and did not float by particle-bubble attachment.

A liga de Níquel 718 é bastante requisitada para aplicações na indústria aeroespacial devido as suas excelentes propriedades. Endurecida por precipitação, a liga apresenta alta resistência mecânica sob condições extremas e ambientes severos, representando um avanço tecnológico significativo na produção de motores aeroespaciais. Os reparos realizados nos motores são feitos por diferentes processos, porém muitas vezes são realizados até que as especificações estruturais deixem de ser atendidas. Após os reparos, a liga é solubilizada em temperatura inferior a temperatura solvus da fase d, o que pode levar a precipitação crescente desta fase, podendo impactar nas propriedades da liga. O intuito do presente trabalho é avaliar o efeito de múltiplos ciclos de tratamentos térmicos de solubilização e envelhecimento na microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas da liga. Foi possível observar que os múltiplos ciclos induzem uma crescente formação de fase d, reduzindo a resistência mecânica da liga.

The mining industry depends upon inexpensive water transportation. Today, large quantities of mined products are transported by ships over oceans, from continents to continents, over lakes and waterways to the ultimate users. Sometimes, the routes these Bulk Carriers travel cover only a few hundred miles, sometimes thousands of miles halfway around the world. Most of the products of the mining industries are relatively inexpensive. A significant portion of their cost to the ultimate users are in the cost of transportation and not in loading and unloading these commodities at the ports of origination or destination. So far, the industry has produced very efficient loading and un- loading installations, but has very little influence over marine transportation or the design of the vessels themselves. Very little was ever published dealing with integrated transportation systems properly correlating all phases of the operation; namely, loading, marine transportation and unloading bulk materials.

Agglomeration for the heap leaching of gold and silver ores can be defined as the process of attaching fine ore particles (less than 100 mesh) to coarser particles so the fines are immobilized and uniformly distributed throughout the heap, thus making the heap more porous and uniformly permeable to the flow of a leaching solution. Agglomeration techniques and equipment to be described include drum and disc agglomerators, stockpile and belt agglomeration, and the use of vibrating deck and reverse running conveyors.

Mining wastes can contain base and precious metals, but also metalloids and rare earth elements that are nowadays considered as highly critical for the industrial development of the European Union. The development of alternative routes to conventional processing is still required in order to decrease the cost associated with the treatment of these resources, which are more complex in composition and with lower grades. An ecologically acceptable and yet economic alternative for processing of low-grade sulphidic primary ores as well as mining wastes is the extraction of metals using bioleaching processes. The purpose of this study was to test the potential of bioleaching procedures for the extraction of residual metals contained in sulphide-rich tailing wastes coming from a European copper mine. These wastes are mainly composed of pyrite (60%) and contain cobalt (0.06 %) and gold (0.95 g/t). Bioleaching experiments were performed in 2 L stirred reactors in batch mode and in pilot tanks (110L) in continuous mode, using the "BRGM-KCC" bacterial consortia. High metal extractions were obtained (cobalt dissolution > 90%), which confirm that bioleaching is an effective process for this tailings material. Experimental results were used to design a global treatment process scheme and to perform a preliminary economic evaluation, showing good profitability of a hypothetical industrial project.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the recovery of alumina from domestic nonbauxitic resources, including anorthosite. The United States has large reserves of anorthosite, but its aluminum content is less than 50 pct soluble in acid, unless a source of fluoride is added to the acid. A flowsheet that includes leaching with HCl and fluoride followed by crystallization of AlC13.6H20 from the pregnant liquor by HCl gas injection was designed. Approximately 90 pct of the aluminum values were recovered from the anorthosite when a ratio of 0.14 mole of fluorine per mole of aluminum was used. Sodium chloride is cocrystallized with the A1C13.6H20 but is removed by water washing of the Al203 product. A material balance is given based on results of laboratory studies of the unit operations.

"Currently, large amounts of wastewater containing boron are discharged from industries like coal-fired power plants. Although coagulation-sedimentation is widely employed for their treatment, only a little consideration has been given to its mechanism. An additional problem is that the produced sludge has poor solid-liquid separation. This study is focusing on coagulation-sedimentation using magnesium, examining the mechanism and improving the solid-liquid separation. First, the co-precipitation with magnesium hydroxide was conducted against high-concentration boron wastewater with 500 mg/dm3as B. Second, in order to improve the solid-liquid separation by maintaining high reactivity, low-crystalline magnesium oxide was synthesized from magnesium carbonate by calcination at 400–700°C. It was tested as an adsorbent of boron and compared to co-precipitation with magnesium hydroxide. Co-precipitation showed high removal capacity. X-ray diffraction (XRD) of the sludge revealed the presence of other compounds besides magnesium hydroxide. This result suggests that other processes play a role other than simple adsorption on to magnesium hydroxide, and provides a plausible explanation for the observed high separability. As for the adsorption, the synthesized magnesium oxide immobilized as much or more amount of boron than co-precipitation. Furthermore, the results of fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) suggested the residual magnesium carbonate improved solid-liquid separability due to its poor solubility.INTRODUCTIONBoron is used in various industrial applications. In glass industry, the addition of a little amount of boron into glass products can enhance heat-resistance and chemical-resistance. Semi-conductor industry also employs boron as dopant for silicon. From these industries, large amounts of wastewater containing boron have been discharged. Additionally, coal-fired power plants have been recently discharging highly concentrated boron wastewater because the amount of boron contained in coal has been increasing due to a gradual decrease of the quality of coal. Since boron is partially proved to be toxic for animals, plants, and human beings (WHO, 1998),the guideline of the World Health Organization limit the boron concentration in drinking water to 2.4 mg/dm3(WHO, 2009).Because boron does not precipitate from solutions by simply changing the pH, the removal could be carried by operations such as adsorption or ion exchange. However, since ion exchange is an expensive operation with relatively low capacity, it is not suitable to treat the large amounts of wastewater produced by heavy industries like the coal-fired power plants. Therefore, coagulation-sedimentation method is still widely used as a suitable alternative way."

In this paper, a new approach that uses hot-top DC casting process to producing multi-alloy ingots is present. The different type and size of composite and coated ingots (4045/3004/4045 three-layer composite ingots with section 630mm by 1500mm and 4045/3003 coasted ingot with F140mm/F110mm in diameter) are cast by this approach. The macro-morphologies and microstructures of the composite ingots, the temperature distribution and the element distribution in the interface zone were investigated, also and the interface bonding strength was measured. Results show that the solid supporting layer formed on the cooling plates plays a key role in the casting process of composite ingots. The solid supporting layer can prevent the blending of two melts by resisting the impact of alloy melt, which ensures the stable casting process and casting high quality composite ingots, because the contact height is increased using hot-top DC casting. In addition, fabrication and properties of 4045/3004/4045 three-layer composite ingots with section 630mm by 1500mm are reported in detail.

The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) is the fourth panel cave mine in the East Ertsberg Skarn System, (EESS) which lies 500 m below the producing Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine and up to 1,700 m below the surface. The interaction between the DMLZ and DOZ is occurring as the DMLZ cave grows vertically toward the DOZ footprint. During this process, a rapid change in the global mine system stress is anticipated. This change is forecasted to drive substantial changes in the magnitude and direction of principal stresses in the DMLZ and DOZ mines at PT Freeport Indonesia. These changes will bring the mine system closer to the ultimate capacity of the excavations and can result in significant impacts to mine stability if not managed. Critical to this management, is understanding cave growth and locations, as well as how these changes will impact stress conditions.

The tremendous engineering advances occurring during this past century are very evident within the boundaries of the Anthracite Section of AIME. The Steelton plant of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, located along the Susquehanna River just east of the Commonwealth's capital at Harrisburg, for more than 105 years has experienced a most dynamic life which has paralleled America's industrial growth. (Figure 1) In June 1865, just after the Civil War, a group of men met to organize the Pennsylvania Steel Company. The war had brought into sharp focus the vital importance of the railroads to the country's expansion. Until that time wrought iron rails were used, and the replacing of track after only several months wear had become an almost unbearable cost. The spirit of free, competitive enterprise and the prospects of a lucrative market compelled these men to form that first Pennsylvania Steel Company and to develop better rail products. They issued the following statement: "...our desire to free ourselves from dependence upon a foreign market (has) led to the organization of the Pennsylvania Steel Company, and the parties who have connected themselves with it are determined to produce upon American soil all the principal manufactures of steel that are now, at such a serious cost for freight, commission, insurance, exchange, duty, etc., and often, with so much delay and uncertainty, imported from abroad. As a direct result of the second World War, consumption of nickel in the United States has increased to such an extent that it has been considered timely to investigate undeveloped deposits of the nickel minerals. Funds were made available to the Bureau of lines in 1941 to investigate the extent, occurrence, and quality of nickel ores in the Mirror Harbor area. The Federal Geological Survey mapped' and studied the area during the summer of 1941 and Robert S. Sanford, an engineer of the Bureau of lines, made a preliminary examination in June 1942. A contract for drilling the deposits under the direction of the author was let in July 1942.

Interface levels in flotation columns are generally measured with the aid of a pressure-sensitive Instrument, e.g. a differential-pressure cell. This paper criticizes the use of this type of measurement, and discusses other methods that are claimed to give more accurate measures of interface levels. The paper focuses on the development of methods based on the measurement of conductivity across the froth-slurry interface. These are often sabotaged by variations in the conductivity of the feed slurry, particularly when the pH of the slurry IS being controlled, e.g. In sulphide flotation. Methods of improving the accuracy and reliability of this technique are described. The result IS a robust, easy-to maintain level-control scheme that successfully rejects large disturbances in plant operation (including a 5:1 change in slurry conductivity) while controlling levels to an accuracy of I 4 cm.

The Iron Ore Company of Canada mines, processes and ships crude iron ore, concentrate and pellets from the rich ore bodies of the Labrador Trough area in the extreme north-eastern part of Canada, some five hundred miles from Montreal (see figure 1). There are three main sites of activity. At Schefferville, approximately 12 million tons a year of crude ore (chiefly limonite) are mined, crushed, screened and shipped to Sept-Iles. At Labrador City, 40 million tons of specular hematite are mined annually for processing into 17 million tons of concentrate. Of this, 9 million tons are converted into pellets. All product 1s shipped to Sept-Iles. At Sept-Iles, on the north coast of the St. Lawrence, a six million ton per year concentrator and pellet plant process much of the Scheffervllle ore into high-grade pellets. Also at Sept-Iles are the company's administration offices stockpiles and shipping facilities. The Terminal facilities can berth and load a 250,000 ton bulk carrier at 19,000 tons per hour.

Los dos países desarrollados con grandes reservas de cobre son Estados Unidos y Canadá y estos no tienen yacimientos interesantes, ya que los mismos o tienen leyes muy bajas o sus reservas no son comparables a los prospectos mineros del Perú, Chile, Panamá, etc. De otro lado, se clasifica las reservas con el precio del cobre. Los precios se determinan de acuerdo a la información de las memorias anuales de las empresas propietarjas; así como las declaraciones de los funcionarios de las empresas y de las autoridades gubernamentales en el caso de los países en desarrollo.
