With the continued downward pressure on coal selling prices, mine management must make its operations as efficient as possible. The problem is the same one throughout the mineral industries, streamlining operations to maintain competitive mining costs (Born, 1991). There has been a great deal of research into better using production manpower. But the story is different for operations support personnel. Traditionally, planning man-power requirements are done annually, with modifications to the operating plan occurring generally quarterly. On the other hand, the demands on manpower are often dynamic, being responsive to changing productivity levels ,mine conditions (including water influx, bad roof, poor floor)and unanticipated project requirements (responses to machine breakdowns or a new section setup requirement because of a drop in coal quality in another area). Such changes may impact the manpower structure significantly. At times they may cause serious labor relations problems concurrently. Realignments and the generation of instability in the workforce because of active job switching (bidding) are a result. Most responses by coal operators are reactive rather than proactive, a situation that could be mollified by more accurate and detailed planning of predictable manpower requirements. A manpower planning tool is needed that takes into consideration such things as changing productivity levels and conditions as manhour requirements for different work areas are planned, rather than blindly allocated through traditional staffing modes.

THIS necessarily brief sketch will attempt to summarize the high lights of perhaps the best meeting so far held by the Iron and Steel Division. All sessions were well attended and the discussion was vigorous and of a high order. The technical sessions opened. on Tuesday morning. "Precipitation Hardening of Copper Steels" was discussed by Cyril S. Smith and Earl W. Palmer, and dealt with steel with a 1 per cent copper content. Discussion brought out that there were no fabricating difficulties, but that the surface might be somewhat checked due to intergranular penetration of copper which could be easily taken care of. Probable advantages of steels of this type for high temperatures were pointed out. "An Improved Nickel-chromium Hardened Chilled Cast Iron," by J. S. Vanick, described a wear-resistant cast iron and evoked a lively discussion.

Experimental evidence is presented which confirnis the epitaxial relationship between the deposited silicon and the sapphire substrate. Four distinct modes of orientation relationships have been established. These have been shown to be Single-crystal gvowth retention as a function of surfaces oriented off ideal has been qualitatively indicated. Both full-circle goniometer X-ray techniques and replica electron microscopy have indicated varying amounts of microtwinning in the silicon. film, which may he caused by the mode of silicon formation. Parameters have been found where twin density is less than I pct. The early stages of' epitaxy of silicon m sapphire have been examined by electron-microscope techniques... and mechanisms have been proposed. THE first report of the deposition of single-crystal silicon on sapphire (single-crystal aluminum oxide) was made at the American Physical Society Meeting in Canada' by one of us and was subsequently published in the Journal of Applied physics.* This paper summarizes some of the work carried on in this area since that time, in addition to reviewing some of our earlier observations. The initial single-crystal deposits of silicon on sapphire reported were obtained on sapphire planes produced by cutting a sapphire rod perpendicular to its fastest growth direction, which is approximately 60 deg from the C axis. Direct correlations between the microstructure and X-ray data as to the single crystallinity as shown in Fig. 1 are evident. These deposits were identified as (111) silicon on the substrate oriented near the (1123) of sapphire. (Sapphire notations are designated according to the c over a ratio of 2.73.) Due to the current cost and availability of crude oil in Brazil, Samarco Mineracao S. A., as part of its program of quality and productivity optimization and reduction of operating costs, has undertaken tests to utilize alternate energy sources for fuel oil used in its pelletizing plant at Point Ubu, Espirito Santo, Brazil. The energy program undertaken by Samarco consists of two basic steps. The first step was to reduce energy consumption, that is, to improve the thermal efficiency of the process. Secondly, a program was started to substitute the fuel oil with coal.

Since the first determination of Dumas1 in 1880, many authors have tried to measure the solubility of hydrogen in solid aluminum, or at least the amount of dissolved gas in it. However, the interpretation of the results which have been obtained is still difficult. Sieverts? then Baukloh and Oesterlen,a during their gassing experiments could not determine any solubility of hydrogen in solid aluminum. On the other hand, Portevin, Chaudron and Moreq4 leaving the determination of the hydrogen solubility beyond the scope of their experiments, measured only the amount of gas that they could extract by high voltage positive ion bombardment and found up to 151 cm3 of gas per I00 g of metal. Winterhager,6 by repeated vacuum extraction during severe cold rolling, extracted up to 161 cm3 per 100 g. In both series of experiments, the extracted gas contained chiefly hydrogen with a small amount of nitrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and methan. Later, Schmidt and von Schweinitze as well as Chaudron and Moreau7 showed the importance of the adsorbed layer of hydrogen, the extracted quantities being proportional to the surface and not to the weight of the sample, when its cleaning was not perfect. In earlier experiments, Steinhausers extracted from more massive samples nothing but a little amount (< 0. 5 cm3 per I00 g) of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and methane. Thus, according to these experiments the quantity of dissolved gas is probably very small and the effect of the surface could falsify the results of the extraction. However, owing to the care taken by Chaudron and his coworkers, it was clear that all the hydrogen extracted could not come from the superficial layer, or that the links which bound hydrogen to the surface were so strong that the usual method of cleaning could not destroy them. After the main parts of the experiments reported here had already been carried out, Eborall and Ransley9 published the results which they obtained with an analysor having an accuracy of 0.03 cm3 per I00 g, while that of the usual apparatus was only about 0.2 cm3 per I00 g. During all their experiments the adsorbed layer would have been a difficulty, for the value of the adsorbed hydrogen was approximately equal to that of the dissolved amount. Several parameters controlling the reproducibility of tritium determina¬tion in organic compounds by liquid scintillation counting were evaluated by the Federal Bureau of Mines. These included optimum volume of scintillator solution for maximum counting efficiency, reproducibility of counting a sealed commercial standard and comparison with duplicate counts on laboratory-prepared samples. The error introduced by using microliter pipets, optical differences in counting vials, reproducibility of counting organic samples where quenching is a factor, reproducibility of counting laboratory-prepared samples with an added internal standard, optimum ratio of internal standard activity to sample activity, effect of sample volume upon counting efficiency, count rate at which coincidence losses become apparent, and reproducibility of organic compound radioassay by the standard addition technique are outlined. From the evaluation of these parameters, a technique that can be applied routinely to organic compounds containing tritium has been established, and details are included in this report.

THE metallurgist is familiar with the rapid development of concentration -by flotation and smelting in the reverberatory in recent years, brought &apos;about chiefly by the exhaustion of&apos; bodies of .rich, coarse, direct smelting ore. Geologically speaking, in many porphyry-copper districts, the richer contact or replace let deposits surrounding &apos;the main ore-forming igneous intrusion have been exhausted, and it is necessary to beneficiate the copper minerals disseminated throughout the mass of the intrusion itself. The organization of great companies to treat such low- grade ores on a large scale and the practices resulting from the necessity for an economic method of treatment &apos;are among the most prominent metallurgical developments of the past decade. It is interesting to note the effect of the present trend of practice on the inter-relationship of the concentrator and smelter, on the constituents of the smelter charge, and on smelting in general.

O planejamento de lavra de curto prazo tipicamente confia em amostras obtidas de furos de desmonte em uma operação de lavra a céu aberto. Essas amostras podem conter grande erro de amostragem. O objetivo deste artigo é avaliar o impacto do erro de amostragem na recuperação de lavra. Para comparação, foi utilizado banco de dados Walker Lake exaustivo considerado como a distribuição real dos dados. A metodologia consiste na obtenção de amostras a partir dos dados exaustivo, em um espaçamento regular de 5x5 m. Em seguida, o erro de amostragem foi adicionado às amostras. Posteriormente, as amostras foram utilizados para estimar os blocos e classifica-los como minério ou estéril. Quatro cenários com amostras com 0%, 10%, 20% e 30% de erro relativo. A recuperação de lavra de cada cenário é comparada com a real distribuição dos dados. Além disso, o erro de classificação do bloco é avaliado para os quatro casos. Os resultados mostram que problemas na amostragem e no protocolo de preparação de amostras pobres afetam a curva teor tonelagem e a classificação dos blocos em minério e estéril.

The Thames gold-silver deposits are part of the Hauraki goldfield, situated within the Miocene to Pliocene calc-alkaline Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The Waitangi vein system is one of the mineralised ore shoots in the Thames district. The Thames gold deposits are characterised by shallow-level epithermal vein mineralisation with phyllic to advanced argillic alteration assemblages and abundant sulphide minerals including pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite. Gold occurs as electrum in association with sulphide minerals. Sulphur isotope analyses of mixed sphalerite-galena and sphalerite-galena-chalcopyrite samples yield a narrow range of &delta;34 SCDT values (-1.0 to 0.9 ë; n=5), whereas late spongy pyrite gives unusually light sulphur isotope values (-16.7 to -27.9 ë; n=4). Vein quartz from the mineralised zone at Waitangi yields &delta;18OSMOW values from 6.8 to 12.7 ë (n=23). Fluid inclusion studies indicate a homogenisation temperature range of 190¦ - 296¦C and salinity range of 0.2 - 3.0 wt per cent NaCl equivalent. Similar temperature and salinity ranges have been recorded for the other gold deposits in the Coromandel Peninsula. PIXE (Proton Induced X-ray Emission) analysis revealed that the Waitangi ore fluids have 1090 - 2700 ppm K (average 1600), 145 - 205 ppm Ca (average 180), 80 - 100 ppm Mn (average 90), and 80 - 200 ppm Fe (average 120) but no detectable Cu, Zn, Br, Rb, Sr, Pb and Bi (only one fluid inclusion contains 28 ppm Zn). The sulphur isotopic values of base metal sulphides from Waitangi suggest that the sulphur was derived from a magmatic source (either directly, or by leaching of igneous sulphides). The calculated oxygen isotopic composition of ore fluids is between -2.1 to 3.8 ë at 250¦C and -0.1 - 5.8 ë at 300¦C. Oxygen isotope analyses have revealed significant variations in &delta;18O values with elevation and gold grades. Zones of gold enrichment coincide with a zone of variable oxygen isotope values at the top of the vein system, where boiling and/or fluid mixing most likely occurred. Mixing of ore fluids with convective ground water is a likely mechanism for gold deposition in a shallow environment for the Waitangi vein system and there is also lack of fluid inclusion evidence (eg liquid-rich and vapour-rich inclusions in the same growth zone) for boiling of ore fluids. Oxygen isotope values varying with gold grades within the Waitangi conduits suggest that &delta;18O values may be useful in targeting bonanza grade gold mineralisation in epithermal vein systems.

Thin seam mining presents unique challenges when management or economic conditions require significant productivity increases. These challenges are increased depending upon the presence of various external factors such as labor unions, Federal and state regulations, and market characteristics. This paper explores the turn-around situation occurring at Tanoma Mining Company (TMC), a medium-sized underground coal mining company in central Pennsylvania, USA. Using a systematic approach of improving management controls and direction, labor relations, and communications, coupled with an intensive upgrade/rebuild/replacement program for equipment and systems used at the mine, TMC has begun reversing its&apos; cashflow position from negative to positive within two years.

A novel process using solid metals for the direct reduction of more noble metal ions from solvent extraction organics has been developed. Base metals recovery has been the principal focus of investigations to date but feasibility tests have now also been made on galvanically stripping selected precious metals. In this study gold (III) was loaded from an aqueous HAuCI4 .3H20 solution into a mixed organic 40 vol.% TBP, 10 vol. % D2EHPA in kerosene. The direct precipitation of metallic gold from the loaded organic phase using zinc powder and iron, aluminum and copper slabs at 70 °C was successfully demonstrated. The gold reduction rates were relatively fast even though the conductivity of the organic solutions is very low. The reaction rates were studied as a function of the variables zinc particulate size, oxygen and nitrogen atmosphere, water content in the organic phase, organic ratios and temperature. The gold morphology was usually powdery or dendritic in nature but continuous films were obtained in some instances. Activation energies were calculated and possible reaction mechanisms are discussed. In general, the results obtained were very promising and showed that gold can be successfully cemented from selected organic solvents by galvanic stripping using less noble solid metal reductants.

Ground control problems are an important factor affecting safety, production, and efficiency in underground coal mines. A major portion of ground control problems encountered in underground coal mines can be attributed to geologic features in the strata surrounding the extracted coal seam. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has compiled information from numerous sources on the geological features that contribute to ground control problems in underground coal mines. The compilation includes (1) sedimentary features such as paleochannels, crevasse splays, clastic dikes, mold-and-cast structures, concretions, and lithologic factors, and (2) structural features such as folds, fractures, joints, cleat, and faults. The compiled information will aid in identifying the features, predicting their occurrence in advance of mining, and controlling or minimizing roof failure when these features are encountered in an underground coal mine.

Salt mixtures consisting of KC1, BaC12, and HfCl4 with RbCl or CsCl were investigated as electrolytes for refining hafnium. The presence of RbCI or CsCl in the electrolyte appeared to suppress the volatility of. Best electrorefining was obtained with an electrolyte containing 50.7 percent KCl, 27.l percent BaCl2, 15.7 percent CsCl, and 6.5 percent HfCl4. In this electrolyte, hafnium metal with an average oxygen content of 470 ppm was produced from an anode feed containing l,600 ppm oxygen. All metallic impurities were lowered, except titanium, manganese, and tin.

At the 1980 TMS-AIME world symposium, Dr. Davey mentioned that the traditional lead blast furnace is now being challenged by direct smelting processes. In the copper smelting field both the blast furnace and reverberatory furnace are also disappearing in favour of direct smelting processes such as Outokumpu flash smelting, Mitsubishi continuous smelting, Noranda furnace, Inco furnace and so on. Those new processes all have the following in common: (1) High degree of mechanization (2) Metallurgical reactions carried out in closed vessels (3) Application of oxygen and/or oxygen enriched air (4) Minimization of handling materials and gaseous volume (5) Minimum energy requirements (6) Removal of workers from near the furnace (7) Reduction of emissions of harmful gas to meet environmental regulations. (8) Improvement to the work place environment to avoid occupational hygiene hazards. Direct and continuous smelting of powdered concentrate in one vessel was a romance of the metallurgist since early times. However as mentioned above, in the copper field this objective is being achieved in practice. The industry however can&apos;t deny that the serious and severe regulation of environmental pollution in every country was the prime motive for the modernization of smelters. In early days, to meet regulations, it was anticipated that many economic difficulties such as higher capital and energy costs and extravagant use of resources and waste disposal would be the result. "Turn a misfortune into a blessing" is an old saying which reveals the current thinking and reacent developments in the nonferrous industries. In the last ten years in the lead smelting field, about two decades later than copper, commercial scale smelting using new furnance technology has started. The KIVCET process and QSL process, which is flash smelting and bath smelting respectively, are becoming major competitors. They will be sure to upgrade their processes to remain economically and environmentally viable in the comming decade.

The design of an aquifer depressurization system is discussed. The system uses a number of wells surrounding a mine shaft to reduce the aquifer pressure in the vicinity of the shaft. The effect of various parameters such as number of wells, wellbore diameter, time and well location is discussed. It is concluded that, with a properly designed depressurization system, the aquifer pressure and the water inflow rate to the shaft may be reduced to less than 15X of their potential values in the absence of wells

MY endeavor in this paper will be to tell something of the accomplishments and current problems of the anthracite producer and to suggest some of the avenues for technical development that seem to me to be the most necessary and likely to bear fruitful results. The several subjects, that I find of most interest will be taken up individually with brief reference to the future trend. Underground Mining and Loading ?In this field great progress has been made in the last twenty years, beginning with the introduction of the scraper system. The electrical hoists for the operation of scrapers have been improved, and give little trouble, but there is an open field for the improvement of the auxiliary apparatus, particularly in the application of roller-hearing sheaves to the guiding of scraper ropes. Also notable in the last six or seven years is the introduction of shaker chutes, so that far more anthracite is now loaded over them than by scrapers. This trend should continue to be manifest, particularly if those who are looking ahead and who are charged with the development of this specialty continue constantly to study and improve the mechanical design of their shakers.

"IntroductionTHIS PAPER deals with chemical and mineralogical changes in wall-rocks associated with pitchblende mineralization in the Gold-fields area of Saskatchewan. The localities at which the rock specimens studied were collected, and descriptions of the various rock-types referred to, are given in a previous paper by the author (5).The geological field work upon which this paper is based was carried out while the writer was employed by the Eldorado Mining and Refining Company during the summers of 1948, 1949 and 1950. The laboratory work§ consisted largely of quantitative spectrographic analyses for both major and minor elements, supplemented by an examination of 250 thin sections of both altered and unaltered rocks.Character of the AlterationHydrothermal alteration, with associated pitchbende mineralization, is widespread in the Goldfields area of Saskatchewan. The most intense alteration is restricted to the immediate vicinity of fault or breccia zones, but large areas are affected to a minor extent.In detail, the relationship between alteration and pitchblende mineralization is complex, as individual veins do not in general have separate alteration halos. Pitchblende generally occurs in gash-like calcite veins or stringers in wide, fractured zones associated with faulting. Large, lenticular and tabular masses of slightly to intensely altered rock occur in the same wide fracture zones as the mineralized veins. However, vein deposition appears to be-long to a later fracturing period, after hydrothermal alteration was more or: less completed. Generally, the veins transect and are confined to highly altered rock, but on the other hand many highly altered zones intersected in diamond drill-core are barren of mineralized veins."

Existing research focuses on light-duty vehicle energy losses. However, heavy-duty off-road machinery is understudied. This article presents an energy balance assessment of a mining vehicle utilized in an open-pit mine in Colombia.
