The Port of New York and New Jersey is one of the most heavily used transportation arteries in the world, handling nearly 40 per-cent of the North Atlantic shipping trade and directly providing nearly 230,000 jobs to the local economy. In 2004, $100 billion worth of consumer goods moved through the port. To accommodate future cargo volumes in the port, which are expected to double over the next decade and possibly quadruple in 40 years, deeper shipping channels are needed to provide access for a new generation of cargo mega-ships with drafts exceeding 13.7-m (45-ft) when loaded. Current channels within the harbor range in depths up to 13.7-m (45-ft), thus preventing carriers from using these larger ships, or requiring significant reductions in cargo to achieve lesser drafts to operate safely within the harbor. As part of the Harbor Deepening Project, the Anchor-age Channel would be deepened to 15.2 m (50 ft) below mean low water (MLW), for a length of 5,790 m (19,000 ft). The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) owns, operates and maintains two existing water siphons in the harbor. Due to their shallow depth, both existing siphons must be relocated before dredging of the Anchorage Channel can be completed. Tom Costanzo, manager of capital programs for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), says that ?While the re-location of the existing siphons under the Anchorage Channel is vital to the success of the deepening program, it is also a story of cooperation among key agencies at different levels of government resulting in improvements that will benefit the people of this region greatly.?

Campbell (Battelle Memorial Institute, Columbus, Ohio)—Since the de Boer-Van Arkel process for making titanium metal involves a number of steps in a fairly compact unit, it is difficult to determine simply which of the steps is rate controlling. In any statement as to which step constitutes the rate-controlling process, qualifications appear to be in order. It is possible to design a reaction bulb in which any one of a number of steps is made to be controlling. I—With the filament removed some distance from the crude, as in the case of the authors' experiments, the interdiffusion of iodine and iodide may be controlling. 2—If, as is usually done, the crude metal is placed in a perforated cylindrical basket, or as a briquetted mass, in close proximity to the filament, the rate of deposition is increased (we obtained rates of deposition 5 to 10 times those cited in the authors' paper), and another rate-limiting factor, such as the reactivity of the crude, may take over. In this regard, we have noticed radically different rates of deposition with different crudes, and with crudes in various stages of exhaustion. 3—With a very reactive crude metal and with optimum practical geometry, still another process may be controlling. It is felt that this is a diffusion process in the immediate vicinity of the filament involving the fundamentally adverse situation of a net flow of particles away from the filament. The separate experiments on the reactivity of iodine with titanium are interesting but somewhat inconclusive. Data is still needed on the partial pressure of iodine in an operating decomposition bulb. A knowledge of the gradient of iodine partial pressure from the crude to the filament would be particularly enlightening. Optical absorption may be a useful technique here. Accurate measurements of the total pressure within a decomposition bulb under various conditions would be quite revealing. Preliminary measurements have been made at Battelle in following this line of attack. It is interesting to note that the authors' data on the temperature dependence of deposition rate indicate that the overall rate is not controlled by the kinetics of the decomposition reaction at the filament: TiI1 ? Ti + 4I Any reasonable estimate of the activation energy of this reaction would, if its kinetics were controlling, dictate a much greater temperature dependence than is observed here. The authors apparently attribute the drop in deposition rate (eventually to zero) with increased TiI4 pressure solely to a decrease in diffusion rate. However, there is an equilibrium factor involved here that must not be overlooked. As the partial pressure of TiI4 is increased, a point is reached where, due to the competing reaction of the tetraiodide with titanium to form lower iodides, the equilibrium partial pressure of titanium is reduced to the point that it equals the vapor pressure of titanium at the filament temperature and the deposition rate falls to zero. "INTRODUCTION Aerosols (5 um have not been shown to be consistently generated and characterized in inhalation chambers. Particle deposition in the lungs however may occur with particles as large as 25 um(1). Therefore, in order to closely simulate the atmosphere of an underground coal mine where the distribution is bimodal, with modes at S and 15 um (2), particles much greater than <1 um must be characterized for uniform mixing and size distribution within these chambers. The Hazelton Animal Exposure Chamber has been chosen because it has been best characterized for smaller particles (<1 um) (3), and is the major type used by most inhalation toxicology institutes such as Lovelace Inhalation Toxicology Institute and Battelle Northwest Laboratory.BACKGROUNDPreviously published studies on the inhalation of solid aerosols have attempted to characterize the distrition of particles of <2 um in diameter. There are no published reports of extensive work characterizing either the size distribution of particles <1 um or the concentration throughout the exposure chamber (Table 1).Table 1 shows the variability and sizes of several aerosols <1 um in diameter used in five previous chamber studies.Discussion of Previous StudiesThe study done by Bauermash, Bryan, Dickinson, and Burke (4)stated two major concerns in the development of the 6.5 ft. diameter chamber. The first was that a quantity of animals could be exposed to the same concentration regardless of the location of the animal, and second was that the chamber could be easily cleaned and decontaminated. The solution to the first concern required a circular chamber with the contamination air entering the chamber somewhere along the central axis. The animals could then be changed during exposure time so that each animal was exposed throughout the total volume."

WORK was undertaken two years ago at the Hammond Laboratory for the purpose of determining the magnitude of the elastic range in single crystals of pure metals by means of creep tests, the assumption being made that if a true elastic range exists, the elastic limit represents the maximum stress for no creep. A sensitive extensometer was constructed, and creep tests were made on zinc single crystals at a variety of loads and temperatures1. It was soon discovered that there is tip measurable elastic limit in ductile zinc single crystals at, or above, room temperature. The inference that pure metallic single crystals may not possess a definite elastic range was not justified, however, since zinc had been tested in creep only above its recrystallization temperature, and several investiga-tors2,3,4 had already shown that above the recrystallization temperature polycrystalline metals will flow under very small stresses, while below that temperature stresses of a much larger magnitude are required. For that reason, it was decided to extend the study of the elastic limit to other metals having a higher recrystallization temperature than zinc. Aluminum and silver were selected, because of the ease of obtaining pure materials and of preparing large single crystals, and because the crystallo-graphic glide system of these metals is well known. Owing to the limited time available, the elastic range was investigated by slow tensile tests rather than by creep tests.

"Prediction of a variable sulphur content in Cape Breton seams is important for planning the production of a highgrade metallurgical coal. Two extrapolation methods (Kriging and a version of Universal Kriging) to predict sulphur content in blocks of coal before mining are presented and applied to the New Lingan Mine reserves in the Harbour seam. The uncertainty of the predicted values is expressed by using standard deviations. Some statistical results for the Phalen seam, which occurs about 400 ft below the Harbour seam, are presented for comparison. The two mathematical models consist of two sets of equations which have been used in computer algorithms. Some limitations of the present approach and possibilities for further statistical work are indicated."

This paper presents two main developments: (1) a short, constantly accelerated centrifuge method of measuring drainage capillary pressure properties of cores, and (2) a new analytic method of treatment of centrifuge measurements to obtain saturation-capillary pressure relations. Toward the first objective, a clever experimental method is presented which is certainly more rapid than previous centrifuge methods. Toward the second objective, a new analytic method is derived to eliminate the approximate method of Hassler and runner. The derivation of this new analytic method, however, appears to be in error. The new analytic solution is developed as Eq. 5 in Appendix A. "Gold associations were established in a·biooxidized, chlorinated CIL residue assaying 0.02 oz Ault and in a biooxidized thiosulfate leach residue assaying 0.01 oz Au/t. A detailed mineralogical study involved: assays of screened fractions; light microscopy; ion probe microanalysis to quantify 'invisible' gold in sulfide minerals; proton probe microanalysis to detect and quantify preg-robbed gold. In the CIL residue, most of the gold is preg-robbed (71 %). In the thiosulfate leach residue, gold occurs mainly as submicroscopic disseminations in microcrystalline quartz (chert). In both residues, the 'invisible' gold in pyrite accounts for a minor fraction of the gold assay. Quantitative determination of the gold occurrence in the two residue samples established conclusively that gold adsorption on carbonaceous matter in the thiosulfate leach is of minor importance.Acknowledgement: published with permission of Newmont Gold Company."

Nowadays nearly the half of the world zinc production is used for galvanizing. After their life span most of the galvanized products return as scrap to the steel mill. During the steel process the zinc is collected in the flue dust It is astonishing to notice that between 40 and 50 % of the zinc produced is brought into the steel processing cycle by the coated scrap while only 3 to 5 % of the zinc production can be covered by the recycling of the zinc-bearing steel mill dusts. Responsible for this worse ratio is the fact that the established recycling technologies suffer from high energy consumption, low zinc yields, halogen problems and hardly any iron recovery. A development of new or an optimization of current recycling procedures for the dusts is unalterable because of increasing zinc amounts in these residues and the rising costs for the disposal. Different pyrometallurgical recycling technologies are tested in rotary kilns and vertical retorts at the Department of Nonferrous Metallurgy, University of Leoben, Austria. Various reducing agents from carbon monoxide to hydrogen and combinations are used. The results should make it possible to draw conclusions that allow an economical and ecological judgement of the different varieties. The goal is to support the affected industry to increase the low recycling rate and prevent a loss of high zinc values in the steel industry filter dusts.

In 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied a 12,564-acre portion of the 34,795-acre Rockhouse Wilderness Study Area (CA-010-029) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Kern and Tulare Counties, CA, about 60 air mi northeast of Bakersfield at the south end of the Sierra Nevada. A review of the geologic and mining literature, and a field examination identified a turquoise and a gold prospect in the study area, and another gold prospect and a feldspar prospect within a mile of the study area boundary. Thirty-three rock and 16 alluvial samples were taken.

"Electron beam evaporation of liquid metals is an innovative technology increasingly used in industry to produce very thin coatings of high purity. In this process the surface of a metal ingot, placed in a water-cooled copper crucible, is heated by bombarding it with a high-energy electron beam gun. The material melts, forming a free surface and eventually starting to evaporate. The rising vapor cloud condensates as a thin film on a moving substrate. The strong energy input at the free surface gives rise to vigorous thermos capillary and buoyancy driven convective motion within the melt, leading to unwelcome heat losses. This paper aims to show how these losses can be reduced by optimizing the geometry of the crucible and by using external magnetic fields. We present both experimental and numerical results.IntroductionElectron beam evaporation of liquid metals [l] is an innovative PVD-technology which is excellently suited for the industrial production of high-quality coatings. In this vacuum process a high-energy electron beam heats up the surface of a metal ingot. The ingot melts and forms a free surface. A schematic view of the arrangement is shown in Figure 1. When the temperature of the free surface exceeds the actual (pressure-dependent) saturation temperature of the ambient gas, the liquid starts to vaporize. The rising vapor cloud finally condensates on a moving substrate located at some distance above. To guarantee a superior quality of the coating the melt is typically confined in a water-cooled copper crucible. The intensive cooling is necessary to avoid chemical reactions between the melt and the crucible walls, that is, crucible materials and their reaction products are practically excluded from evaporation."

Sulphuric acid leaching is the most common method of recovering uranium from its ores and in the following discussion various alternative low cost routes are investigated for recovering uranium from milled ore acid leach liquors. Historically uranium has been recovered from dilute impure leach liquors by packed bed ion exchange (IX), solvent extraction (SX) or a combination of both. All three process routes as commonly practised require complete separation of leached solids and liquids, as well as extensive solids washing in order to reduce soluble uranium losses to a minimum. Separation and washing are costly and often require equipment covering large areas of land. The size and capital cost of the post leach solids washing operation is controlled by the ease of washing the slimes fraction of the ore and the key to the problem of cost reduction, as many others have realised, lies in the ability to separate the slimes fraction of the ore from the more easily washed sands, to wash the sands in low cost equipment and to recover uranium from the slimes stream. Sands and slimes are usually defined in this context as the material larger than, and smaller than, 325 mesh (44 microns). The proposed flowsheets which minimise solid-liquid separation and washing have usually incorporated ion exchange (Refs 1,2,3), and resin in pulp is in fact practised in several mills in the USA (Ref 1). The resins used in these flowsheets and [cranium] recovery throughout the world have been strong base resins which load rapidly and are moderately selective for the uranyl sulphate complex anion over the range of pH which is conveniently achieved in an acid leach operation. Strong base resins are, however, not as selective as weak base resins and weak base liquid reagents owing to the adsorption of competing anions, some of which find their way into the product while others act as resins poisons. Ion exchange using strong base resins must therefore be followed by a more selective weak base SX purification step if pure yellow cake is required.

THIRD-LAW entropy data for zirconium-containing compounds are sparse. Kelley a lists entropies at 298° K. for the oxide, tetrachloride, nitride, and silicate, as well as for the metal. The present paper presents heat capacities between 51° and 298° K. and entropies at 298.15° K. for the zirconates of the alkaline-earth metals-calcium, strontium, and barium. The authors believe magnesium zirconate does not exist as a stable compound at room temperature. Entropies of formation from the constituent oxides also are given. MATERIALS The materials used in this investigation were synthesized and analyzed in the Berkeley Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines. Calcium zirconate was prepared by heating an intimate mixture of reagent-grade calcium carbonate and pure zirconia for 30 hours between 1,200° and 1,300° C. and for 32 hours between 1,400° and 1,500° C. As part of the heating schedule, the sample was ground and mixed seven times. Periodic analyses and minor adjustments of composition were made. Analysis of the final product gave 31.19 percent calcium oxide (theoretically 31.28 percent) and 68.67 percent zirconia (theoretically 68.72 percent). The X-ray diffraction pattern agreed with that in the ASTM catalog.

This paper is one of a series, describing current practice in diamond drilling for production at various mines throughout the United States. It describes the drilling and blasting methods, used at the Tennessee Copper Co., which started using deep-hole drilling for blasting in 1927, employing inde- pendent, rotation percussion drills with sectional drill steel. Since 1942 the company has employed diamond drills for deep-hole drilling. This method has now passed the experimental stage and promises to become permanent. The elimination of rock dust and safer working conditions for the drill crews are listed as the main advantages. The higher initial cost of equip- ment is the principal disadvantage.

There are a number of factors, including mine geometry, local geology, geotechnical properties of overburden materials, surface topography, sequence of overburden strata, and extraction rate, affecting characteristics of surface subsidence imposed by large underground excavation. Among the factors, the first three have the major impact on magnitude and area of influence of final subsidence. Hence, a model has been developed, considering mine geometry and geologic and geotechnical properties of the associated area, to predict maximum possible subsidence and subsidence profile at any cross-section within the subsidence influence zone. Based on extensive field measurements and mechanics of strata behavior, under the action of overburden pressure in the vicinity of the large underground excavation, the vertical plane of influence zone has been divided into five areas: 1) excavated, 2) caved, 3) fractured, 4) highly deformed but continuous, and 5) subsided zones. In the final state of subsidence each area maintains a certain volume expansion/contraction, i.e. a factor which depends on geologic, geotechnical properties of overburden strata and state of stress within the subsidence trough. The cumulative volume expansion and contraction partially compensates for the extracted volume and the difference between the two is reflected as the subsided area in the form of the area within a curve defined by a probability function. The input parameters for the model are mine geometry (i.e. length and width of the panel), depth of cover, and geologic and geotechnical properties of overburden strata (i.e. percentage of hardrock, sandstone and limestone, and soft rock, shale within the overburden strata and Rock Quality Designation). The model calculates angle of draw for the site, expansion factor for each zone utilizing empirical relationships, maximum possible subsidence and plots the subsidence profile curve. The model is developed for a longwall excavation with unique characteristics of prediction of angle of draw and maximum possible subsidence for a given geologic and mining condition at any cross-section within the influence zone of subsidence.

Twelve samples from six Barbour County coal beds were analyzed for this report. The samples collected were generally high sulfur content coals, frequently exceeding 3 percent in the raw-coal sample. Many of them could not be upgraded to acceptable metallurgical standards even by rigorous preparation procedures. The production of coal in the county in 1963 amounted to almost 3 million tons of which 44 percent was mechanically cleaned.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and larger scale studies on samples of domestic perovskite and ilmenite ore concentrates to devise a procedure for recovering TiC from these ores. From the concentrates, mixtures of titanium and calcium carbides were produced. The carbides were then ground and reacted with water. This reaction decomposed the CaC2 to acetylene and hydrated lime and simultaneously liberated the TiC. Using a combination of elutriation and gravity-separation techniques to separate the hydrated lime, approximately 93 pct of the titanium was subsequently recovered as purified carbide containing 54 to 70 pct titanium with CaO content as low as 0,6 pct. This combination of techniques can be used to separate more than 90 pct of the CaO from the TiC. Therefore, this carbiding procedure is a viable method for treating titaniferous materials, including perovskite, that contain more than 20 pct CaO. Tests made in a static-bed reactor showed that for the reaction of TiC with elemental chlorine to produce titanium tetrachloride (TiCI4), a temperature of at least 940° F is desirable to achieve a suitable extraction of titanium in a laboratory chlorination reactor. In fluidized-bed tests at 840° F, 98 pct of the titanium contained in TiC was extracted.

"Because rock salt and pot ash formations contain particles capable of elastic deformation, the material has usually been compared with various rheological models containing elastic elements. Extensive laboratory testing of salt and potash samples resulted in various theoretical conclusions based on conditions quite different from those in a deep mine. It is felt that sufficient data have now been collected from underground measurements and observations to demonstrate the inelastic behaviour of salt masses in a deep mine. The conditions in deep salt strata can be defined as near hydrostatic, because the acting pressures are very high compared to the negligible elastic limit of the salt. The pressure field and creep around the single opening is a function of its shape, size and age. The same factors, together with extraction, determine the behaviour of the mining a rea. The application of the correct analytical method in mine design can significantly improve the excavation techniques and predetermine the long-term behaviour of openings."

En ese sentido, el presente texto revisa dichos problemas y plantea soluciones respecto a ellos como: diversas mejoras en el régimen de los concursos de las grandes escuelas y duracíón de la preparación, así como una reducción del número de materias enseñadas y la adopción de métodos activos de la enseñanza en lugar de aquéllos que se limitaban a exigir la presencia física de los alumnos.

El presente trabajo describe la aplicación del método de corte y relleno descendente mecanizado y el método de almacenamiento provisional en la mina Santa Bárbara, ubicada en Cerro de Pasco. Para el primer método, son mayores e intedependientes las operaciones unitarias, limitando la producción y generando mayores costos en el relleno chancado. Mientras que el segundo método, es aplicable en los cuerpos "Vasconia" y "Manuel", siempre que cumpla con tres condiciones principales que hacen posible su efectividad en la mina: la primera, señala que la explotación se realice en los pisos superiores y luego, en los inferiores; la segunda, refiere que la explotación son mayores las se haga en retirada y la tercera indica que el espacio no debe ser rellenado. En este sentido, el método de almacenamiento provisional resulta ser el más idóneo para la explotación de cuerpos irregulares en la mina Santa Bárbara puesto que su capacidad al término del acarreo de mineral es ilimitada.

During the course of the investigation of possible domestic sources of manganese, engineers of the Bureau of Mines examined and sampled two manganese mineral deposits in northeastern Utah. The Daggett Chief claims are situated in the northern part of Daggett County,5 miles southwest of Manila, Utah, and approximately 57 miles from Green-River, Wyo. Owners of the property are J.E. Harris Of Salt Lake City, Utah, Nels Palleson of Manila, Utah, and J. P. Larson. The manganese occurs in a vein 6 to 8 feet wide in a shale and sandstone formation. Two distinct occurrences Of manganese are present Within the vein, and samples of each were subjected to testing. Lot A, representing .probably the major portion of the Manganese; was composed of nodules and veinlets of manganese oxides in a semicompact; gray, shaly formation. Lot B represented a 15-inch vein of dense iron-manganese ore. .Most of the laboratory work at Salt Lake City, Utah, was done on these two samples; but preliminary testing also was carried out on a small sample, physically similar to lot A, submitted by the owners.
