This report describes the analysis tools developed at West Virginia University which can be implemented to optimally design coal mine electrical systems. The basic analytical tools for all power systems are the load-flow and short-circuit analysis. Well known programs have been developed for analysis of ac transmission and distribution systems, but they are not applicable to a system which has combined ac/dc distribution, such as a coal mine power system. Furthermore, the topology of a coal mine electrcal system changes continuously due to the movement of the locomotives on the track. In the first section of this report, algorithms for carrying out load flow and short-circuit analysis of a coal mine electrical system are described. Results from the study of a typical coal mine system are presented. In the second section a method is described to optimally size power cables for cyclic loads. The method is based on the development of a thermal-electric model for a low-voltage power cable. Results from experimental verification of the model are also presented. These techniques are useful in the safe, efficient, reliable and economical design of the coal mine electrical power systems.

The empirical relationship between torque measured during installation and pile capacity has gained a wide acceptance in the helical pile industry in the last few decades. This paper presents a theoretical model developed to estimate torsional resistance of cohesive soils to helical pile installation. The proposed torsional resistance model was then used to establish torque factor, Kt, a factor that is widely used in the industry. The results of the study indicated that the Kt factor is a function of the load path (i.e. tension or compression), pile geometry and soil properties. The assessed Kt factors in tension and compression were validated by the results of 74 installation records and full-scale helical pile load tests. A parametric study was also performed to qualitatively assess the relative importance of different parameters that affect the Kt factors.

The brief comments made in this chapter deal mainly with shaft sinking, but don't assume that freezing techniques apply only to shaft sinking. They can be used on tunnel work, on such things as liquid gas storage in sediment, and I think you will probably see other applications for it as we go along. The method was first developed in 1883 and was used to sink shallow shafts through water-bearing overburden in Germany and in England. One of the early shafts was in Germany and was sunk by freezing to 310-ft depth. The project required 17 months for drilling, roughly 5 1/2 months for freezing, and another 7 months for sinking, giving an average progress of 10 ½ fpm. Fortunately there have been numerous improvements and new developments in this technique through the years. With equipment and techniques available today, we can take a 20-ft-diam shaft down through 2000 ft of water-saturated overburden and the time schedule runs roughly 4 months for site preparation, freeze-hole drilling, installing the casings, and setting up the plant; 4 ½ months for freezing; and 6 months for excavating and installing permanent linings. This gives a progress rate of about 140 fpm, on average. I might qualify that a little in that the special linings that are required for some formations can affect the time. If it's straightforward sinking where one can use a heavy concrete lining, up to 630-640 fpm may be achieved in a shaft; but with special cast-iron tubbing or types like that, 5 fpd is pretty good progress, so the lining does affect the time. The freezing method is used mainly for sinking shafts through unstable water-bearing formations which cannot be grouted either effectively or economically and which are too deep to enclose in pile casing. Even with overburden, grouting methods available today can handle roughly 100 lb water pressure; in the range of, say, 100 to 150 ft from the surface, it's very often best to grout 40 or 50 ft. The composition and the possible utilization of Ti bearing blast furnace from a titanomagnetite blast furnace smelter were studied. The slag contained about 20% Ti02 and trace Sc. The mineralogical analysis indicated that Ti in the slag is mainly as perovskite. By means of magnetite separation, the Ti containing phase could not be enriched. An effective hydrometallurgical approach was proposed with sulphuric acid leaching. The method proposed for processing the studied slag renders product Ti02 and SC203. Besides the recovery ofTiO2 and SC2O3' the leaching process yields fine grained residues which can used as additives for making cement.

This report describes the development and operation by the Bureau of Mines of a pilot plant designed for using high-volatile A bituminous coal-in-water suspensions as a source of preheated coal and superheated steam in the pressure gasification of coal with oxygen. Figure 1 on page 2 is a block diagram of the integrated gasification process, in which a total of 70 tons of coal was fed from slurry and gasified. The present work included (1) development of equipment and methods both for mixing pulverized coal and water to produce slurry and for pumping and metering the slurry at gasification pressure; (2) development of equipment for heating the flowing slurry and, because slurry that can be pumped produces more steam than is necessary as a gasification reactant, developing equipment for removing and metering the excess steam; and (3) demonstration of the process under actual gasifier operating conditions, at a coal rate of about 800 pounds per hour and gasification pressures in the range 100 to 300 pounds per square inch gage. By using the forced-convection principle, a flow of slurry made from a caking, high-volatile A bituminous coal can be continuously heated to 600° F. in a coil-type heater. The flow rate and concentration of the slurry and the temperature gradient along the length of the heating coil must be closely controlled. In a radiant-type heater, involuntary reductions in flow rate, even momentary, can lead to coking and plugging of the heater coil.

AN excerpt from the Alabama State Mining Law, pertaining to, transporting men' into and out of the mines, reads as follows: "A trip of empty cars may be operated for the purpose of taking employees into and out of the mine, where the distance to and from their work exceeds one mile." The State Mining Department of Alabama includes in its inspection the transportation of men into and out of the mines, also studying and noting improvements, or progress made, that would tend to create a greater assurance of safety in this practice. Everyone is familiar with the original safety methods employed in man-trip transportation, such as passing a rope around the trip of cars, or through the cars, fastened in the conventional manner, and with the usual "clog," commonly called a drag, on the rear end. Also there is a more advanced method of transporting men, such as the double-rope system, which is feasible on slopes used exclusively for this purpose, and is very satisfactory. "There has akvays been plenty of discussion around the ‘accuracy of pyrotechnic detonators withmost recognised manufacturers claiming a variability of arourid 1% or less for their ‘superaccurate’ pyrotechnic based detonators. It is only now being understood that this 1% variabilitycan have serious adverse effects on blast performance. For example a 1% accurate 500millisecond shock tube detonator can fire anywhere between 485ms and 515ms. When wecouple these rather inaccurate ‘accurate’ detonators with short delays on surface, such as a 17millisecond connector, the probability of delay crowding and even out of sequence firing is quitehigh."

Size distributions and concentrations of particulates emitted from diesel engine exhausts were measured with cascade impactors. Samples were taken from the exhaust of two types of engines using three types of fuel and operating under five different engine speed and load conditions. The measured mass median diameters of the diesel particulates were typically about 0.3 um. There was no significant difference in mass median diameter between engines or fuels and only a slight dependence on operating mode. Concentration measurements ranged from 14.2 to 250.9 mg/cu m, and calculated mass outputs, from 64 to 10,000 mg/min. Significant differences in mass output were found between engines, fuels, and especially between different operating modes. The quantity of clean dilution air that would be required to reduce the particulate mass concentration below the 2.0 mg/cu m respirable dust standard for coal mines was greater than the dilution air required to meet the standards for noxious gases for both engines tested.

This report compares the quality of zirconium metal prepared by batch reduction of zirconium tetrachloride by (1) sodium, (2) magnesium, and (3) mixtures of sodium and magnesium. Criteria for quality are based on chemical analyses and hardness testing of zirconium arc-melted from sponge. The best quality zirconium with respect to low oxygen content and hardness numbers was prepared by reaction of zirconium tetrachloride with a mixture of sodium and magnesium. It was found that this reaction could be successfully carried out by two methods: (1) addition of sodium and magnesium before the initial reaction and (2) periodic injection of sodium during reaction of zirconium tetrachloride with magnesium. The largest quantity of metal was found to be recovered from experiments in which a mixture of sodium and magnesium was used. Magnesium appeared to be a better reductant than sodium because magnesium-reduced zirconium contained less oxygen and exhibited lower hardness numbers than sodium-reduced metal.

AT A FATIGUE SESSION organised by the A.S.T.M. in 1949, R. E. Peterson presented a brief introductory paper ( 1) in which lie referred to a discussion on the fatigue of metals which took place in England in 1849, and then proceeded to review some of the subsequent researches concerning the mechanism of fatigue. In the course of the review, he discussed metallograpl1ic studies with single crystals and polycrystalline materials, studies with X-ray methods, and the application of the electron microscope. During that hundred-year period considerable progress was made toward a better under-standing of the nature of fatigue, although it is probable that even greater attention was directed to the more practical aspects of the problem, such as the effects of notches, temperature, corrosion, surface treatment, residual stresses, and so on. Since then there has been an appreciable acceleration in the tempo of the fundamental work, partly influenced by the rapid development of the theory of dislocations, with the result that our knowledge of the mechanism of slip, the initiation of fatigue cracks, and their subsequent propagation, has still further advanced, although it is by no means complete as yet. The present paper is an attempt to out-line the more recent developments in these basic studies, to correlate them when possible, and to draw attention to those directions in which research might profitably be pursued.

Abstract. Dynamic experiments were performed in a continuous open-circuit 40x40 cm ball mill using a pseudo-random binary sequence of the feed rate and measuring the variations of the discharge particle-size distribution. The impulse response is calculated by a cross-correlation technique. Then a model involving a discrete transfer function and a time-series stochastic equation is calibrated using maximum likelihood methods. Based on this empirical model. a minimum variance controller with constrained input is designed and its performances are compared. by simulation, to the performances of a conventional PID regulator.

The process of gold recovery by gravity concentration is incorporated in the metal recovery flowsheet at seven Newmont Mining Corporation owned mining operations in Australia, North America and Africa. In 2009 gold recovered by gravity processing was equivalent to nine percent of Newmont's total gold sales of 5.3 million ounces. This paper will discuss these applications in detail including a review of plant flowsheets and presentation of recent operating results. Operating performance will be discussed with reference to ore characterisation procedures, interpretation of results, design considerations and optimisation practices as they relate to the recovery of gold by gravity concentration.

A lead smelter slag with high copper, lead, arsenic and silver contents was treated at laboratory scale for arsenic removal. The slag was first leached at atmospberic pressure with sulfuric acid and oxygen. According to arsenic contents leaching of most of the arsenic was achieved in either one or two stages, producing a lead-silver rich residue and a solution high in copper and arsenic concentrations. Alternative routes were considered to treat the resulting solution. Firstly, solvent extraction of arsenic with a mixture of TBP and 2-etbyl-bexanol was tested and extractions of over 95 percent of arsenic were achieved. Secondly, a copper arsenate precipitation treatment was done to eliminate arsenic and copper from solution.

The Bureau of Mines studied the purification of commercially available vanadium in the 100-kw electron-beam furnace. Purification studies were conducted on a 100-gram button scale by melting and holding the liquid vanadium at temperatures ranging from 2,060° to 2,080° C at pressure of 5(10)-5 torr for periods ranging from 5 to 20 minutes. The effect of doping vanadium with carbon and metallic additions was determined. This study demonstrated that hydrogen was readily removed to 3 ppm or less, oxygen and carbon were reduced to less than 100 ppm each, and the metallic impurities were reduced Co the range of 10 to 500 ppm. The nitrogen content was not reduced in any of the buttons; rather, the nitrogen concentration generally increased as samples were held for successively longer periods. Oxygen was removed much faster and more completely when vanadium was doped with small carbon additions or one of several dopes prior to melting.
