The intimate association of iron formation and massive sulfide deposits has been documented by many investigators (McAllister, 1960; Hutchinson, 1972). In a classic example of such an association four distinct facies (oxide, carbonate, silicate, and sulfide) were identified in an Algoma type iron formation occurring in Paleozoic rocks, but exhibiting physical features (banding) and chemical composition (SiO2 + A1203 + Fe2O3) typical of Precambrian iron formations. The geochemical variation of the iron formation was studied by analyzing 62 samples for Si, Al, Fe, P, S, and CO2. Following a model proposed by James (1954), the geochemical and mineralogical variation of the iron formation can be used as an excellent tool for the exploration of massive sulfide deposits.

A conventional paddle-type mixer and a gravity flow mixing device were evaluated for conditioning of phosphate ore with fatty acid and fuel oil, and for acid scrubbing prior to cationic flotation. Gravity flow mixing required less residence-time, but slightly higher reagent concentrations to achieve recovery levels similar to conventional conditioning. Grade was less sensitive to reagent concentration using the gravity flow mixer. For acid scrubbing, the gravity flow mixer proved equally effective. In this paper, the effect of time, pulp density, reagent concentration, and emulsification on conditioning and acid scrubbing efficiency of the two devices will be discussed.

Coal mine ventilation systems are often subject to high leakage rates. As a result, changes in airflow resistance will strongly affect the efficiency with which air is delivered to the working place. One major source of airflow resistance is the line brattice used to direct air from the last open crosscut to the working face. Because it is a great distance from the fan, the resistance of the line brattice can result in more overall leakage than an equivalent resistance closer to the fan. Substituting auxiliary fans for brattice eliminates this source of resistance, with improvements in system efficiency and cost. Also, in some mines, the leakage that leads to spontaneous combustion can be reduced. The benefits obtained by several different brattice and fan substitutions have been studied by Mine Ventilation Services, Inc., under contract to the Bureau of Mines. Changes in main fan duty were compared with additional costs associated with auxiliary fans. Results indicate that in some circumstances, considerable leakage reductions and cost savings are possible.

Each generation accepts the developments of the preceding generations without full appreciation of the difficulties that had to be overcome or of the effect of any given development on society. Today, the production of pig iron is the yardstick with which general industrial health and progress are measured. So natural and logical does this seem to us, that it is difficult to picture conditions prior to the fourteenth century when pig iron was unknown. Not only was pig iron unknown but iron or steel could not be melted and poured into castings; all iron and steel articles were forged from sponge iron. All castings, as well as many worked articles, were made of non-ferrous metals or alloys. In many parts of the world, over long periods of time, not only was the annual exchange value of non-ferrous metals greater than that of iron and steel, but their combined tonnage was greater. At present, the value of the pig iron produced in a year is of the same order of magnitude as that of all non-ferrous metals combined; the tonnage of pig iron is, however, about twenty times that of all non-ferrous metals combined. Owing to lack of records, we will probably never know the relative importance of the various metals at all periods in historic times. A certain conclusion is that the iron and steel industry, since the discovery of pig iron and the cheap methods of converting it into steel, has grown at a much more rapid rate than the non-ferrous metal industries. Notwithstanding their fundamental fitness for man's needs, iron and steel owe their importance in no small degree to the low cost of production. The low cost was a result of increased knowledge of the production appliances and of the metallurgical processes. This increased knowledge is the key to our modern industrial civilization. It will remain for future generations to determine whether there is now going on a gradual change toward greater importance of the non-ferrous metals, as compared to iron and steel. The world's pig iron production in 1920 was slightly more than twice what it was in 1890, whereas the non-ferrous metals production in 1920 was about two and one-half times that in 1890. Multiseam mining has been carried out at many collieries in South Africa. It the seams are In close proximity difficult and dangerous mining conditions may arise. In the Witbank area multiseam bord and pillar mining has been carried out, while in Natal where the seams are thinner and of a higher quality, total extraction methods are common. Several combinations of multiseam mining have been carried out. The paper highlights a number of case studies and the strata control problems that can arise.

The expanding use of digital control in the metallurgical industry is a significant recent development. From 1970 to 1975, approximately forty metallurgical plants throughout the world have adopted automation techniques based on digital controls (see Table 1). Several recent technical reports have described development of digital control systems in concentrator grinding control, 1,2 flotation,3 and smelter operations.4,5

"The Plastojrost apparatus, developed by Ritter and Juranek in the 1960s has been modified primarily, to automatic temperature control. A limited investigation of carboniferous and cretaceous coal samples showed that both coals undergo the same changes when coked in the Plastofrost unit. Dilatometer plastic range and total dilatation correlated well with the Piastofrost plastic range for the carboniferous Appalachian coal, but not for the cretaceous western Canadian coal. Work to elucidate the characteristics of some western Canadian coals using the Plastofrost is in progress. IntroductionCoke quality is critically affected by the properties of the plastic phase in the coal-to-coke transformation. Since these properties exist in a coke oven and are not measurable, they are approximated by standard laboratory tests, such as free swelling index, plastometry, and dilatometry. Of particular interest to us is the anomalous behaviour of western Canadian coals of cretaceous origin. By many predictive methods, these coals should not produce coherent cokes. When coked in pilot scale test ovens, in fact, they produce cokes of good stability. They typically make up 20% of Japanese coking coal blends and are also used in South Korea, Mexico, Brazil, and several European countries. This anomalous behaviour has been studied in our laboratory<8.9.1O). Plastic properties or rheological tests examine just the external ramifications of the coal-to-coke transformation. To understand the process, however, microscopic examination of the coal and coke seems to be needed. The Plastofrost unit has been shown to be a convenient means to this end."

Although nearly 10 pct of the total tonnage of coal produced annually within the United States is handled by bulk freighters on the Great Lakes, very little of the detail connected with it has been published other than occasional newspaper stories and publication of tonnage statistics. Of the total tonnage floated on the Lakes each year some 10,000,000 is stored and distributed from the port of Duluth-Superior, at the western end of Lake Superior commonly known as the Head of the Lakes. This port has the largest single area concentration of coal docks in the world. Since this area contains the largest ore docks, the largest movable material handling bridge, the largest and highest grain elevator and the largest coal bri-quetting plant in the world, it is entirely fitting and proper that here also should be located the largest coal dock and what we believe to be the world&apos;s largest clam shell. Of the sixteen coal docks operated by ten companies, five are owned and operated by the North Western-Hanna Fuel Co. which has two docks on the Superior, Wis., waterfront and three docks in Duluth, Minn. It is with these five docks that we are primarily concerned, General History In the summer of 1871 a small sailing vessel entered the harbor of Duluth-Superior with the first commercial coal cargo. All the coal brought up that first year did not amount to more than 3000 tons. During the year 1877 the first dock equipped for handling coal was built in Duluth. Coal receipts increased to 52,785 tons in 1879 the first year for which an official record was kept. Since then the volume of water-borne coal to the Head of the Lakes steadily increased to a maximum of 12,688,321 tons in the year 1923. This tonnage was nearly equalled in the year 1927 and the next highest tonnage recent year was in 1946 when 10,105,703 tons were unloaded. The average annual bring-up over a ten year period 1938 to 1947 was 8,605,231 tons. Approximately 30 pct of the coal unloaded at the Head of the Lakes is handled over the docks of the North Western-Hanna Fuel Co. Competition of other fuels coupled with expansion of coal fields in the mid-west have held coal receipts for Duluth-Superior at a relatively constant figure during the last eight years although the total tonnage of coal floated on the Great Lakes has more than doubled in the past 25 years. The Midnite Mine is an inactive, hard-rock uranium mine in Stevens County, WA. Oxidation of sulfide-containing minerals, primarily pyrite, in the ore body produces large quantities of acidic water. An interception system installed by the mining company limits the discharge of contaminated water from the mine. The U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) have been actively involved in planning remediation of the disturbed areas. To assist in remediation, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) initiated research to determine water quality and to define ground water flow characteristics. USBM personnel designed a monitoring network, supervised installation of sampling wells, and collected and analyzed water samples. This Report of Investigations describes interpretation of data collected between December 1989 and April 1992. The computer program WATEQ4F was used to identify aqueous species distribution and to calculate potential solid phase controls of solubility. To assist in interpretation of changes in water quality between sampling locations and to develop models describing proposed flow paths, the computer program BALANCE was used. Using output from these programs and field observations, a description of the chemistry along proposed ground water flow paths at the mine is presented.

A closed grinding circuit, typified by a ball mill-cyclone combination, is often required to treat a feed comprised of a variety of minerals of differing properties. Usually, the individual behaviour of the minerals is not assessed, a procedure which requires sizing and metal or mineralogical assaying of each size fraction. Further, sizing is frequently by screening to perhaps 325 mesh meaning that detail on the important -44 um fraction is unavailable. It is well appreciated that minerals can exhibit both individual classifying and grinding behaviour. Recognizing that cyclone classification results from differential centrifugal settling and acceleration rates, then minerals of differing specific gravity will exhibit individual mineral cyclone performance curves. If the minerals have differing grindabilities, then individual mineral rates of breakage may be expected. When treating an ore containing minerals of a range in specific gravity and/or grindability, individual mineral behaviour in the closed-circuit grind could be notable and perhaps important to the overall concentrator performance. An example is a lead-zinc ore, as shown by Kelsall et al.(1,2) This paper describes the individual mineral cyclone performance curves at sizes down to ti 10 um for the four major minerals at two lead-zinc concentrators; the Sullivan concentrator at Kimberley, British Columbia, and the Pine Point Mines concentrator at Pine Point, North West Territories, both operated by Cominco Ltd. In addition, individual mineral grinding behaviour for the four major minerals at the Sullivan concentrator is presented.

(communication to the Secretary*) :-The very interesting results obtained by Prof. Hofman and his assistants came to my attention when I had temporarily assumed charge of the metallurgical department of the Missouri School of Mines, and had found it, pending the completion of a new building, lacking a furnace in which to roast ore preparatory to the customary lead blast-furnace run. An attempt at lime-roasting had been already determined upon, but the use of a charge which would make a slag of definite composition was a new idea. The results following were obtained by Messrs. Aubrey Fellows, J. C. Long, E. R. Wash, and Dr. T. C. Tseung, under my supervision. It is regretted that the data are not more complete; but the work was done simply incidentally to securing the desired ore for the blast-furnace, with no idea of obtaining any results of especial interest. It is submitted because of the metallic lead obtained, no notice of which has been seen elsewhere. The ore was an aggregate of several lots of concentrates, apparently from Missouri ores. The analysis follows, with that of the limestone and sandstone used, as far as made:. Ore, SiO2, 3.04; Fe, 0.77; CaO, 2.53; Pb, 68.74; Zn, 5.77; S, 13.9 per cent.; limestone, SiO2, 1.0 ; CaO, 54.35 per cent.; sandstone, SiO2, 99.8 per cent. The converter was made in the shops from a sheet of No. 14 iron riveted in the shape of a truncated cone, 20 in. in diameter at the top, 15 in. at the bottom and 22 in. high. The U.S. Department of Energy is charged, by federal law, with the responsibility for developing and implementing programs for long- term storage and terminal disposal of high- level radioactive wastes from both commercial and defense nuclear operations. Approximately 288,000 cubic meters of defense high-level wastes are currently in storage at the government&apos;s Hanford Reservation in the State of Washington, the Savannah River Plant in South Carolina, and the Idaho Chemical Processing Plant in Idaho (U.S. Department of Energy, 1980a). High-level wastes from commercial nuclear power production are stored in water pools or basins at various power plant sites. At the end of 1980, approximately 7.460 metric tons of uranium, contained within 28,300 fuel assemblies was in storage at various reactor basins. Although the present inventory of defense wastes are many times larger in volume and in total level of radioactivity than the commercial wastes, in the future, the latter will constitute a substantial quantity of wastes that will have to be disposed of. The present electric generating capactiy of nuclear power plants in the United States is 56.5 Gigawatts-electric (GWe). The amount of spent fuel that would be discharged and accumulated by the year 2000 from these operating reactors would be 38,000 metric tons. With a projected growth of the nuclear industry to 180 GWe in the year 2000, the amount of spent fuel accumulated at the turn of the century could reach 89,000 metric tons of uranium or approximately 318,000 assemblies. In any case, whether one postulates a no growth pattern or one where nuclear power provides its share in the country&apos;s electric generating capacity in the next two decades, a means for safe and environmentally accept- able disposal of high-level nuclear wastes must be found. Storage of commercial wastes in water basins, either at reactor (AR) sites or at away from reactor (AFR) sites, and storage of reprocessed defense wastes in surface or near surface tanks is a temporary solution and is not an alternative for permanent disposal.

In this paper, a fault detection and identification framework based on feature extraction and topology extraction methods is proposed, and evaluated on a simulated base metals refinery high pressure leaching process. Feature extraction methods included linear and kernel principal component analysis, while process topology information was extracted with linear cross-correlation, partial cross-correlation and transfer entropy. Connectivity maps were constructed to identify possible fault propagation paths to aid root cause analysis. The results indicate that process topology can enhance the fault identification capability of data-based process monitoring methods. The study of the considered base metals refinery pressure leaching process is ongoing, with future work including the creation of a fault library which would lead to further critical evaluation of the proposed fault detection and identification framework.

THE SAMPLING of waste materials containing copper, lead and tin has taken on a new significance within recent years, and is of increasing importance, on account of the entry of some of the copper refineries into this field and the tendency towards consolidations among the smelters. In the past, such material was sold on the basis either of a rough or grab sample or of casual inspection of the lot. The two principal sources of this waste are the processes of fabrication and the scrapping of automobile, electrical, plumbing, railroad and other equipment. In both cases much material can be sorted, salvaged and sold by classification and grade to be melted "as is" or with the addition of new or virgin metal. The increasing care in classifying exercised in the large manufacturing plants tends to increase the proportion of this usable scrap; on the contrary, the increasing use of more complex and special non-ferrous alloys tends to make sorting and grading more difficult in turnings, borings, clippings, etc., and consequently is making sampling of more moment. In tin, lead, aluminum, and zinc furnace by-products such as ashes, drosses, skimmings, etc., the trade practice of evaluation has not varied much. For instance, tin drosses, battery lead, and aluminum skimmings are ordinarily sold on what is called "metallic button" or "metallic recovery" or "metallic yield." Copper and lead waste, however, is being sold more and more on actual copper and lead contents based on sample and chemical analyses. This paper will be devoted chiefly to the sampling of materials suitable only for refining and recovery of one or more of the metals present. The methods described are often based on the fact that but one metal, such as copper, is to be paid for. The loss of volatile constituents in melting does not appreciably affect the final copper result, as the "after-melting" assay can he readily calculated to the "before-melting" basis, but if smelter efficiency continues to increase, so that in time zinc, for instance, may be recovered on a paying basis, the method of sampling dirty brass, for example, will have to be changed also. As a matter of fact, we may expect that improved refining processes will make possible the partial recovery of lead and tin which are now lost.

A serious disagreement as to the effect of titanium on the hardenability of steel exists in published references to this subject. Kramer, Hafner and Toleman reported&apos; that acid-soluble titanium decreased creased the hardenability, with multiplying factors less than unity according to [ ] Grossmann&apos;s system for calculating hardenability from the composition. Crafts and Lamont, on the other hand, showed2 how titanium increased the hardenability, with multiplying factors up to nearly 1.7 for about o.&apos; per cent titanium, though reducing the hardenability with higher titanium. Their data, however, were obtained almost exclusively from steels containing more than 2.4 per cent manganese, and thus should be considered as applying mainly to manganese steels. Likewise, the results of Kramer, Hafner and, Toleman regarding titanium are subject to the limitation that although they eliminated the effect of the insoluble titanium compounds from their calculations, they did not make a similar correction for the carbon that was combined with titanium and therefore occurred in a similarly ineffective form. It is suggested by the literature referred to that titanium may have different effects on hardenability, depending on the mode of its occurrence in the steel. The different effects on strength, ductility, etc., have already been discussed by the author.3 In the present discussion some comparisons, on the basis of hardenability as revealed by the Jominy end-quench test, are given between three titanium and two non titanium steels heat-treated in the same ways, and between other titanium steels heat-treated in several different ways. COMPARISON OF PLAIN-CARBON, VANADIUM AND TITANIUM STEELS The five steels used for these experiments were commercially melted and rolled products received in the form of 1.5-in. rounds from three different mills. Their analyses are given in Table I. Steels 2, 3, and 4 are from the same basic electric heat, containing 0.009 per cent of phosphorus and the same amount of sulphur. They were made by, adding aluminum and low-carbon ferrotitanium to different ingots. No. I is a plain-carbon coarse-grained S.A.E. 1040 steel made by the basic open-hearth -process. No. 5

Following a roof fall in the B12 headgate of a CONSOL Pennsylvania Coal Company (CCPC) underground coal mine in February 1998, CONSOL R&D and Exploration initiated an underground roof geology reconnaissance program along the B13 and B14 developments to define potential roof instability areas and to recommend appropriate supplemental headgate support. This reconnaissance program revealed the presence of a thick, massive Pittsburgh sandstone channel overlying the B13 and B14 panels. Surface and underground core holes confirmed the close proximity and the very massive, nonlaminated nature of the sandstone. To mitigate anticipated adverse conditions at the B 13 and B 14 longwall faces due to delayed caving of the massive sandstone behind the shields, a task force consisting of Operations, Exploration, and R&D personnel was formed in May 1998. Several operational adjustments were made by mine management, including repairing damaged lemniscate links, maintaining immediate forward shield support, and implementing measures recommended by the task force intended to boost the shield set load density at the face. After reviewing available geotcchnical information, the task force also recommended fracing of the massive sandstone over the B13 and B14 panels to enhance caving characteristics and further reduce the bending-induced stresses in the sandstone near the face. Horizontal fracs were created at a horizon about 25 feet above the Pittsburgh seam main bench over the two panels in June and November 1998, respectively. To evaluate the effect of sandstone fracing and operational adjustments on the bending-induced stresses in the sandstone, three finite element models were constructed and analyzed. Results from the finite element analyses indicate that one horizontal frac, 25 feet above the Pittsburgh seam, would reduce the bending-induced stresses in the sandstone by approximately 50 percent, maintaining them at a level below the ultimate strength of the sandstone. Operational adjustments to increase the support set load density and support stiffness could reduce the bending-induced stresses in the sandstone by a maximum of an additional 10 percent. Shield pressure monitoring at the B14 midface confirmed the presence of a lower roof pressure zone inby and outby the 1314 frac holes. This lower face pressure significantly contributed to improving the B13 and B14 longwall productivity and safety. The total production downtime due to bad top at the B 12 face within the interval of channel influence was 30,600 minutes compared to about 3,500 minutes each for the B13 and B14 faces. The average longwall advance per machine shift for the B13 and B14 faces within the channel was about 70 percent higher than that for the B 12 face.

Geologic studies during development at Copper Flat were directed at acquiring the information necessary in evaluating a low-grade porphyry copper deposit. In addition to the geologic mapping and core-logging of a typical exploration project, these studies included the following : (1) careful checks on the sampling and assaying (2) selection of representative samples used to establish the recoverable amounts of precious metals in the ore (3) examination of underground workings driven to provide samples both for metallurgical testing and for assay comparisons (4) evaluation of plant site and waste dump areas as non-mineral, including a placer examination of the taillngs disposal area (5) location of an adequate water supply. All these investigations were carefully documented to provide the necessary data both for the engineering design and, more importantly, for the feasibility studies required for successfully financing the project.

The Mantos Blancos copper-silver district is located in northern Chile about 45 kilometers northeast of Antofagasta, as shown in Figure 1. Disseminated and veinlet copper and copper-iron sulfides containing economically significant silver values are hosted by andesitic to rhyolitic volcanic rocks of probable Jurassic age (Chavez, 1983). Field, mineralogical, textural and lithochemical evidence show that three major alteration types may be recognized within the district: (1) district-wide sodium metasomatism, manifested as albitization of feldspars and development of albite veinlets and pore-fillings, (2) local to widespread, incipient to intense addition (chloritization) or removal (bleaching) of magnesium and iron and (3) local to widespread, moderate to intense hematitization, usually spatially associated with bornite-digenite-covellite (as specularite) or digenite-covellite-chalcocite (as red hematite staining with or without specularite) mineralization. Carbonatization, occurring as veins, veinlets, vesicle fillings and irregular patches of calcite, varies in magnitude of development but is widespread. Sericitization of feldspars and groundmass is only locally intense yet is generally present as incipient alteration throughout the district. The district-wide albitization of the Mantos Blancos volcanic sequence has altered what were originally more potassic and calcic, less sodic, rocks to what are now more properly referred to as keratophyres (Battey, 1955; Gilluly, 1935, Hughes, 1975). The petrographic and lithochemical characteristics of the three major alteration types noted above are summarized below.
