In our never ending search for new and better ways of underground mining, we find that transportation has had its share of new ideas in the past few years. The old and still effective method of track haulage has had some competition from rubber-tired cars and belt conveyors, each of which has its own safety hazards which demand close scrutiny in any safety study. The use of shuttle cars, in particular, has introduced clearance hazards caused by the absence of the more or less positive guides formed by the rails of a track sys- tem; likewise the requirement of greater clearance tends to increase roof hazards which we all know to be great enough with the best of methods. However, the subject of transportation hazards is too broad to be covered entirely in one paper, so I will confine myself to track methods which carry the preponderance of underground tonnage. I am quite sure that to this group it is an evident fact that haulage accidents are of major importance. However, to stress the point, it may be well to look at a few figures. "Reconnaissance geochemical mapping, based on the chemical analysis of waters, stream, and / or lake sediments had its origin in geochemical prospecting surveys carried out in New Brunswick during the 1950s. More recently, reconnaissance geochemical surveys carried out by government agencies for mineral resource appraisal purposes have been seen as a special case of regional geochemical mapping which is carried out with the aim of describing geochemical patterns f or elements which may he interpreted for mineral resource appraisal, environmental or geological purposes. The interpretation of pal/ ems on regional geochemical maps is based on the concepts of landscape geochemistry, in this paper, the regional approach 10 geochemical mapping is described with reference to an experimental regional geochemical survey which was completed in southwest Ontario during 1981-82. The effects of adding from 1 to 50 atomic percent (a/o) to vanadium were investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Properties studied included as-cast and annealed hardness, microstructure, fabricability at room temperature and elevated temperature, tensile strength, electrical resistivity, and oxidation resistance at 625° and 800° 2. Additions of small amounts of hafnium resulted in lessened as-cast hardness, decreased electrical resistivity, impaired roll- ability, increased oxidation resistance, and greater tensile strength. Larger amount of hafnium caused greater as-cast hardness, increased electrical resistivity, further impaired rollability, continued increase in oxidation resistance, and lessened tensile strength. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of hafnium additions on the properties of vanadium and to learn if this binary alloy had any special or unusual properties. This investigation is a part of a larger research project in which new and expanded uses of vanadium are being sought. Domes tic vanadium is found frequently in combination with uranium, and because of the demand for uranium as a nuclear fuel, there now exists a surplus of vanadium-bearing minerals and vanadium pentoxide as a byproduct of uranium production. Primary principles of conservation demand that greater use be made of this readily available surplus; finding suitable metals to alloy with vanadium to enhance its properties is one way to increase its utilization. This report is the result of an investigation of the effects on the properties of vanadium when hafnium is added in amounts from 1 to 50 a/o.

Many coal beds in the State of Washington, pitching as much as 90°, offer unusual mining conditions. This paper describes methods and safe practices of mechanized mining in pitching bituminous-coal beds that have attracted the attention of mining people from most of the coal-producing countries of the world. The development and use of continuous miners as part of the mechanized program apply particularly to the Roslyn-Cle Elum coalfield, Kittitas County, Wash. All three mines now operating in the field use continuous miners and during 1957 furnished 72 percent of the State's total coal production. Mining operations are now conducted in three coal beds of the Roslyn-Cle Elum field. The coal measures range from 3-1/2 to 20 feet in thickness and vary in dip from 5° to 45° in the localities where the coal is mined. Some safety measures adopted by-the principal operating company in the field during the past 30 years of mechanized mining follow: Use of only permissible electrical or compressed-air-operated equipment on other than intake air; providing and using an explosion gallery to test repaired permissible electrical equipment before taking it underground; use of only compressed-air-operated drill augers in preference to permissible

In this study, the kinetics of isothermal solidification during TLP bonding of Inconel 625 and 718 superalloys with nickel based multi-component filler alloy BNi-2 have been studied through a combination of direct experimentation and mathematical modeling in order to determine the effect of process variables and, thus, to optimize the process. The predicted isothermal solidification completion times from the boron diffusion model and migrating solid/liquid interface model were in good agreement with the experimentally determined values and, they were found to be significantly less than those of other nickel superalloys with different nickel based filler alloys. Further, significant reduction of holding time was observed with increasing bonding temperature and with decreasing joint gap. No significant grain growth in the base metals has been observed in the temperature range being investigated (1325 - 1394K).

The arrangement of the larger furnace at the United Verde smelter, together with the boiler layout and connecting flues, is shown in Fig. 1. The important dimensions are given in the figure, and cross-sectional areas of combustion space, flues, etc., are recorded. The location and extent of the baffling in the boilers also are shown because of their importance in the interpretation of the data. Two boilers serve each reverberatory furnace. They are of the class M-26 Stirling type (rated at 713 boiler hp. each). Steam is generated at 178-lb. gage pressure at a total temperature of 528" F., from feed water at a temperature of 113" F. The feed water is condensate from turbogenerators plus make-up softened by the lime-soda process. The make-up is rather large in amount as it must match the amount of steam consumed in reciprocating blowing engines and the like, which are not served by surface condensers. As a result the boiler feed water has a hardness of 1.5 to 3.0 grains per gallon, but this results in the formation, during six months to one year of boiler operation, of scale only of "eggshell " thickness or less. The boilers are set at the same elevation as the tapping floor of the furnace, which results in the introduction of the waste-heat gases at the top of the front bank of tubes and necessitates the inversion of the usual baffling arrangements. The boilers are equipped with valve-in-the-head soot blowers, which keep most of the dust blown off the surface of the tubes, but it is necessary to supplement the soot blowers by high-pressure air lances, inserted by an attendant through side doors in the boiler setting. Deposits of coal ash and of dust from the furnace charge accumulate in the flues between the reverberatory furnaces and the boilers and this necessitates cleaning of these connecting flues by hand during the greater part of one of the three 8-hr. shifts during each 24 hr. This cleaning operation requires the opening of clean-out doors, which, of course, has some effect on the yield of steam. Revebberatory Furnace Practice The United Verde furnaces are fired with pulverized coal of sub-bituminous type of which the screen and chemical analyses are given in Table 1.

Kaiser Resources Ltd. operates a coal mining complex in Southeastern British Columbia. A large surface mine, a conventional underground mine, and an innovative hydraulic underground mine are presently in operation. The products of these mines are fed to the Elkview plant. This coal has to be prepared to 9. 5% ash and 6'o total moisture for export from the port of Roberts Bank near Vancouver, British Columbia to Japan at a rate of 4. 5 Mltpy. The moisture requirement for the coal product was recently increased to 8. 0% total moisture. The entire operation has been described in various publications (1), (2), (3). Details of the venture will not be repeated in this paper. In this paper we hope to describe the modifications made to the original coal preparation plant in order to satisfy market requirements for quality and quantity of coal.

Some serious fires have occurred in bituminous-coal mines because of short circuits on direct-current power systems that do not have adequate circuit-breaker protection. The writer's observation of circuit-breaker installations in numerous coal mines leads to the conclusion that many persons am not properly informed as to the true functions, limitations, and operation of circuit breakers. Faulty protection results in fire hazards that endanger lives and property. Proper circuit-breaker protection would greatly minimize or, in many instances, eliminate the hazards; moreover, many operating advantages of proper application of modern circuit breakers would be gained. The purpose of this circular is to show why fire hazards exist in many mines despite the use of circuit breakers and how, the hazards may be overcome. A method is given for determining whether additional circuit-breaker, protection is required for a specific 250/275-volt direct-current distribution system, and, if so, the approximate locations and capacities of the required supplemental breakers.

This Bureau of Mines study illustrates the economic significance of the Florida phosphate industry to the State and to the Nation. Environmental considerations related to phosphate industry activity are discussed briefly. Based on forecasts of Florida phosphate production in 1975, and using 1972 dollars, regional and national output value, income, and employment created by the phosphate industry were estimated for 1975. State and Federal government tax revenues generated by the phosphate industry, are also measured. Further, the concentrated impact of the phosphate industry on certain Florida areas and on regional industries is examined. Finally, the phosphate industry's importance to the U.S. balance of payments, U.S. agricultural production, and the Frasch sulfur industry is considered, in addition to byproduct fluorine, and potential byproduct uranium from fertilizer manufacturing.

INTRODUCTION Comminution is generally a feed preparation step for subsequent processing stages; exceptions being when a final product such as aggregates, specification sand, Portland Cement, and similar products is produced. Grinding, the fine product phase of comminution, requires a large capital investment and frequently is the area of maximum usage of power and wear resistant materials. Grinding is most frequently done in rotating drums utilizing loose grinding media, lifted by the rotation of the drum, to break the ores in various combinations of impact, attrition and abrasion to produce the specified product. Grinding media can be the ore itself (autogenous grinding -- primary and secondary), natural or manufactured non-metallic media (pebble milling) or manufactured metallic media -- steel rods, steel or iron balls. This chapter will discuss general mill design and the specific design and application of the following types of tumbling grinding mills. Liners The interior surface of grinding mills exposed to grinding media and/or the material being ground are protected from wear and corrosion by rubber, metallic, a combination of rubber and metallic, or non-metallic wear resistant materials. B. Drives Economics at the time of plant design and mill purchase determine the drive to be used. The simplest drive is the low speed synchronous motor with speeds in the range of 150 to 250 RPM connected to the mill pinion-shaft by either an air clutch or flexible coupling.

Some attempts were made to recover and remove of uranium that may be present in refining effluents, mine waste Water, and other waste sources by using microbial biomass. To establish which microorganisms accumulate the most uranium, 135 species of microorganisms (42 bacteria, 26 yeasts, 34 fungi and 33 actinomycetes) were screened. Of these 135 species of microorganisms tested, extremely high uranium absorbing ability was found in Pseudomonas stuzeri, Neurospora sitophila, Streptomyces albus and Streptomvces viridochromogenes. In addition to the research on uranium uptake, thorium recovery by using microorganisms was investigated. High abilities were found in Streptomyces levoris and Bacillus subtilis. The selective accumulation of heavy metal ions by various microorganisms has also been examined. Uranyl, mercury and lead ions were readily accumulated by almost all of the species of microorganisms tested. Actinomycetes and fungi differ from many bacteria and most yeasts in their selective accumulation of uranium, and mercury. The basic features of uranium uptake by Streptomyces viridochromogenes, a microorganisms with high uranium-uptake ability, were investigated systematically. Synthesizing these results, we suggested that the accumulation of uranium into these microbial cells is not directly mediated by any metabolic process:, but almost completely dependent upon physicochemical adsorption on the cell components. In addition to this fundamental research, uranium recovery was investigated in immobilized Streptomyces viridochromogenes. These immobilized cells adsorbed, uranium readily and selectively. The immobilized cells recovered uranium almost quantitatively and almost all uranium adsorbed was desorbed with 0.1 N Na2CO3, These results showed that microbial cells are more stable after Immobilization and can be used repeatedly for the process of uranium adsorption-desorption. These results suggested that these microbial cells can be used for the recovery and removal of nuclear fuel elements, such as uranium and thorium, from refining effluents and mine waste water.

"In recent years, the efficient cementation of mine tailings is a new way to manage mine solid wastes. The traditional cement materials have a slow setting time, large dosage and poor cementation strength for fine aggregate such as mine tailings. Therefore, the preparation of new type cementitious materials for the cementation of fine tailings has great potential in the treatment of mine waste solids. The paper mainly focuses on exploring the critical factors affecting the cementing performance of granulated blast furnace slag and its performance in the cementation of fine aggregate. Results indicate that the fineness of slag has a significant effect on its cementitious activity and Portland cement clinker has a better stimulation effect on the cementitious properties of slag than lime. And, anhydrite has a better early stimulation effect on the cementitious properties of alkali-activated slag compared to semi-hydrated gypsum and dihydrate gypsum. According to a series of tests on the cementation of fine iron tailings, the optimal ratio of slag, Portland cement clinker and anhydrite is determined as 60:30:10. Compared with P.O 42.5 ordinary Portland cement, the new slag based cementitious material shows much better cementing performance on fine tailings sample. Under the dosage of 12%, the compressive strength of fine tailings mortar using slag-based cementitious material in 3 curing days is increased to 168% that of using P.O 42.5 ordinary Portland cement, while the compressive strength in 28 days curing period is increased to 194%."

"Gibraltar Mines Ltd. has been operating its open pit copper mine for fifteen years. In that time, over 140 million tons of waste and low-grade material has been placed on the mine waste dumps. Laboratory and in situ testing indicated that enough leachable copper was recoverable from the dumps to justify a leaching operation which would include the construction of a solvent extraction-electro winning plant. The plant, which was commissioned in October 1986, was designed to process 3000 USGPM of dilute copper solution to produce 5000 tons per year of high-quality cathode copper.This paper deals with the start-up and initial year of operation of this plant. The three areas: leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning are presented with emphasis on the innovations which were made to help overcome the problems unique to the Gibraltar operation.The Leaching CircuitThe mine waste dumps are leached to produce a pregnant copper solution as feed to the SX-EW plant. To achieve this the dumps are sprinkled with a mildly acidic solution which percolates through the dumps. In travelling through the dumps the solution contacts the surfaces of the liberated copper minerals and dissolves the soluble copper into the form of copper sulphate. The leaching reaction is achieved by a combination of bacterial action to oxidize the sulphides and solubilization of the copper into the acid solution.For the bacterial action to occur the dumps must be near the ideal pH of 1.9 to 2.1 and the necessary elements of the reaction must be present. Because a bacterial reaction is involved there is a lag time between the time when the conditions for bacterial growth are achieved and when the bacteria are in their active growth phase. Laboratory leaching tests with Gibraltar ore indicated that bacterial action takes two to three months to reach its maximum rate (Fig. I).The expected lag time for the planned rate of bacterial leaching prompted Gibraltar to start irrigating the dumps in late June 1986 for a plant start in early fall. The lag time proved to be longer than expected and the dumps took until November to start producing copper at the expected rate (Fig. 2)."

DR iron') is a generic term for metallized product that results from the direct or solid state reduction of iron ore. In direct reduction, iron oxides are reduced to metallic iron in the solid state without an intermediate melting step. MIDREX ® Iron is the DR iron material produced in the MIDREX ® Direct Reduction Process. Except for some thermal and mechanical degradation, the external physical form of as-reduced DR iron is the same as the feed material. Chemically, oxygen associated with iron is removed leaving a very porous structure. Figure 1 is the scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the internal surface of a MIDREX Iron pellet obtained from a Swedish oxide pellet during reduction at 760 °C. Figure 2 is the SEM of a polished and etched cross-section through the same pellet showing the amount of intraparticle porosity. As a result of this high porosity, apparent density of DR iron is relatively low, typically a¬round 2 g/cm3, and specific surface is extremely high, typically around 1.0 m2/g or more. Both density and specific surface depend on the raw materi¬al and the operating conditions of the direct reduction plant. Normally, more than 97% of the available iron is reduced into metallic iron with the rest mainly in the form of wustite (FeO). During direct reduction, the gangue in the iron remains essentially unchanged. Removal of oxygen and the corre¬sponding reduction in weight result in a slightly higher percentage gangue in the product than in the raw material.

Electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) was used to determine the-surface characteristics of products from operating Pb-Zn-Cu concentrators on the New Lead Belt of southeast Missouri and pure galena and sphalerite samples treated-with flotation reagents in concentrations similar to those used in the mills. The emphasis was on the action of surface modifiers such as Na2Cr207, starch, SO2, CuSO4 and NaCN in sphalerite flotation and in the galena-chalcopyrite separation. The objective of the investigation was to monitor the relative oxidation states of the mineral and reagent constituents and correlate these surface concentrations and oxidation states with flotation theory and practice. ESCA was able to follow the action of all the modifiers except NaCN. The existence of PbCrO4 on the surface of galena conditioned with Na2Cr207 was verified. The Pb in the bulk PbS-CuFeS2 scavenger concentrate was found to be significantly more oxidized than the Pb in the bulk PbS-CuFeS2 rougher concentrate. ESCA was found to be most useful for investigating the actions of modifiers rather than collectors due to the large amounts of sulfur and background carbon already present on the mineral surfaces. After calibration for the particular chemical system of interest, ESCA can yield semi-quantitative analyses of the oxidation states of many elements (except hydrogen, and helium) present in the outer 10 to 25 A of a sulfide mineral surface.

The complexity in treating environmentally harmful impurities such as As, Sb, Bi from the base metal matte or metal in the smelting stage are responsible for the high cost of the refining process. The impurity capacities (such as arsenic, antimony and bismuth) of slags were calculated a priori using Reddy-Blander (RB) model. The capacity predictions were for a wide range of matte and slag compositions in copper smelting conditions. The calculated impurities capacities and impurity distribution ratios results are in good agreement with the available experimental and industrial slags data. The a priori knowledge of impurities is useful for reduction of energy consumption and enhanced environmental control in the current and future non-ferrous metal processes.

(Communication to the Secretary) : The investigation so fully described by Mr. Laudig was undertaken with the idea of determining if it is possible to learn by expesiment, without an actual trial in the furnace, what economical results can be expected from the use of a given ore-mixture. The research was necessarily preliminary, and the results obtained are only to be depended upon so far as they relate to the samples treated. With the exception of the ores obtained from the stock-piles of the Buffalo Furnace Company, and several samples taken at a neighboring furnace, there is no certainty that the ores represented the average shipments of any mine. For this reason the publication of the names of the ores might do producers a great injustice. The names of the ores arc therefore withheld, and their identity is further .veiled by leaving out of the analyses the phosphorus-contents. The investigation was begun with the preconceived idea that the rate of reduction would be found to be dependent upon the accessibility of the particles of the ore to the action of the reducing-gas. In other words, a spongy, brown hematite or a very fine Mesabi would be the easiest reduced. I had formed a scale with No. 21 first, No. 30 second, No. 1 third, Nos. 5, 24, 25 and the remaining Mesabis fourth, etc , which is sufficient to show how much actual results differ from a judgment based on physical characteristics. "This article describes the project development and successful implementation of a particle sorter at the Kensington mine. The Kensington underground gold mine and associated milling facilities are located within the Berners Bay Mining District on the east side of Lynn Canal about 45 miles north-northwest of Juneau, Alaska. The paper describes the project from concept, through the development phase, including test work confirming feasibility, to a discussion of operational data and includes shared experiences from operation and maintenance. The project has proven successful in recovering gold that was previously lost to the waste dump and has already resulted in a positive return on investment. The payback was achieved in less than one year.INTRODUCTION The first paragraphs of this paper describe Coeur Mining and the Kensington Mine, its history, geology, mining operation and mill. The second part of this paper gives a quick introduction to sensor-based sorting in general and X-ray transmission sorting (XRT) in particular. This article does not cover costs or economic impacts apart from the pay-back period for the investment at Kensington. Interested readers find more in information on this in the literature (Kleine & Wotruba, 2010; Robben, 2013). Since the publication about XRT sorting at TGME in Pilgrim’s Rest (Kleine, Riedel, Ketelhodt, & Murray, 2010), this is the first time that a comprehensive data set on gold ore sorting using XRT is published. Following chapters highlight the aim of the project for Coeur Kensington, project development through testing and operation before concluding. ABOUT COEUR MINING’S KENSINGTON OPERATION Coeur Mining is the largest U.S.-based silver producer and a significant gold producer with five precious metals mines in the Americas employing approximately 2,100 people. Coeur produces from its wholly owned operations: the Palmarejo silver-gold mine in Mexico, the San Bartolomé silver mine in Bolivia, the Rochester silver-gold mine in Nevada, the Kensington gold mine in Alaska, and the Wharf gold mine in South Dakota. The Company also has a non-operating interest in the Endeavor mine in Australia in addition to royalties on the Cerro Bayo mine in Chile, the El Gallo complex in Mexico, the Zaruma mine in Ecuador, and the Correnso mine in New Zealand.
