"A novel hydrometallurgical process for copper recovery from waste printed circuit boards has been proposed, which consists of selective leaching of copper metal as Cu(I) by Cu(II) in ammoniacal alkaline solution, purification, and electrowinning. The distinct feature of this process is much lower power consumption during the electrowinning than that during the conventional one from acidic copper sulfate media, because the deposition of copper metal from Cu(I) at the cathode and the oxidation of Cu(I) to Cu(II) at the anode take place in the present method. In the laboratory-scale tests using waste printed circuit boards, high purity copper which contains 1.1ppm of impurities was obtained in a chloride system. INTRODUCTIONThe recovery of various metals from waste materials is an important issue in order to conserve the environment and metal resources. Copper is used for cables, electric appliances, etc., and is currently a very important material for industries and will continue to be in the future. Among the wastes that contain copper, one of the most complex recycling materials is electronic scrap like printed circuit boards (PCB), which generally contain 10-30% copper as well as plastics, fibreglass and other metals. There are two ways to recover copper, either pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical. Hydrometallurgical treatments generally have more flexibilities in the process scale and control. The separation processes tend to become complicated because of the poor selectivity during the leaching in the sulphuric and hydrochloric acid media. On the other hand, the use of ammonia as a complexing agent, gave a higher selectivity for copper leaching (Nigo, Majima, Hirato, Awakura, & Iwai, 1993; Majima, Nigo, Hirato, Awakura, & Iwai, 1993; Zhou, Shinme, & Anezaki, 1995; Koyama, Tanaka, & Lee, 2006) .In this study, recycling process containing leaching, copper deposition at a cathode and oxidation of copper(I) at an anode from ammoniacal alkaline solutions containing Cu(I) or Cu(II) is introduced. Furthermore, copper recovery from a waste printed circuit boards and impurity behaviour was examined in ammonia-ammonium sulfate (sulfate system) and ammonia-ammonium chloride (chloride system) systems."

Chemical conversion coating is a process to create thin oxide/hydroxide film containing several inorganic/organic compounds by way of chemical deposition reaction. In case of the application to Mg mobile electronic housings, the film should possess a good electric conductivity while keeping adequate corrosion resistance and working as a paint base. The use of toxic/hazardous chemicals is strictly prohibited from the environmental aspects. This paper describes the recent trend of conversion coating used for Mg electronic housings and analyzes critically from the point of surface technology. The importance of cleaning process and understanding of surface microstructure are particularly emphasized with several experimental results.

The effect of reducing oxygen to low concentrations on the fracture of high-purity iron single crystals has been examined at 78° and 20°K. It is found that iron single crystals grown by the strain-anneal method usually contain a few occluded grain boundaries which may become embittled in the presence of oxygen, thereby nucleating cleavage fractures. High purity with respect to interstitial elements was found to inhibit twinning and evidence is presented for an orientation dependence of the resolved yield stress. Deformation occurred by slip rather than twinning at both temperatures of testing with elongations of as much as 9 pct at 20°K. THE fracture properties of iron single crystals have been observedl-3 to be a function of temperature, orientation, and purity. Allen, Hopkins, and McLennan1 demonstrated that at 78°K iron single crystals became increasingly brittle as the tensile axis approached the (001) pole of the stereographic unit triangle. Iron crystals with the tension axis near a (001) pole were completely brittle and orientations near the (011)-(111) boundary were very ductile, achieving a 100 pct reduction in area prior to fracture. Later work of Biggs and pratt2 and of Edmondson3 demonstrated that by reducing the carbon content of the single crystals the transition between brittle and ductile failure at 78°K could be shifted to orientations nearer the (001) pole. Ed-mondson went further and pointed out that any mechanism which tended to increase the yield strength of the iron (i.e., carbon addition, pre-strain) also increased the tendency for brittle behavior at 78°K. Thus by a reduction of carbon content Biggs and Pratt were able to obtain ductile behavior to within 20 deg of the (001) pole, and Ed-mondson was able to obtain ductile behavior to within 26 deg of the (001) pole. Edmondson's material had a total interstitial content (carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen) of approximately 60 ppm and, although Biggs and Pratt reported no analysis, indications were that their iron contained comparable impurities. Stein, Low, and seybolt4 purified iron single crystals to a total carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen content of approximately 20 ppm. They observed a lowering of the yield stress with this increased purity, and thus one might have expected an observation of increased ductility. Although they tested specimens of orientations which the previous workers had indicated should be ductile, the crystals failed at a 78°K in a brittle manner with little elongation. Stein noted,' however, that about 90 pet of the failures could be traced in origin to occluded grains. Allen et al.1 and Edmondson3 do not report examination of their cleavage surfaces, but Biggs and pratt2 reported that microscopic examination of the cleavage surfaces of many of their specimens revealed the presence of small occluded grains. Honda and cohen6 and Keh7 have also observed the initiation of fracture at occluded grains in iron single crystals. Therefore, the additional complication of occluded grains must be considered in studying the properties of iron single crystals and the origin of fractures determined if the ductility exhibited by the crystals is to be considered meaningful. Various investigators8-12 have studied the effects of impurities on grain boundaries in high-purity polycrystalline iron. Rees and Hopkins10 showed that the addition of oxygen to low-carbon (0.002 pet) iron weakened the grain boundaries, causing a shift from transcrystalline to intercrystalline fracture and a progressive decrease on the brittle-fracture stress with increasing oxygen content. In addition, it has been shown by Low and Feustel11 that the addition of carbon to polycrystalline iron containing oxygen eliminated grain boundary brittleness. Thus, oxygen can embrittle grain boundaries in high-purity polycrystalline iron, but the addition of an appropriate amount of carbon can eliminate the oxygen-induced brittleness. The oxygen content (19 ppm) of the iron "single crystals" employed by Stein el al. was large enough to suspect impurity effects at the occluded grain boundaries. Allen et al.1 Biggs and pratt,2 and Edmondson3 may have masked any occluded grain problem in their specimens considering the relatively high carbon levels they employed. stein13 demonstrated that the addition of as little as 0.9 ppm C to previously purified (less than 5 x 10-3 ppm C) "single crystals" would increase the elongation from a few percent to more than 20 pet at 78°K and the fracture was not associated with grade boundary initiation.

Probably one of the most significant departures in tunneling practice is the introduction of Diesel locomotives far haulage (Diesel trucks have been used for some time). The fallacy of the belief that they do not generate carbon monoxide or toxic gases and can be used indiscriminately has been proved by the authors through observation for several years of atmospheric conditions surrounding the use of Diesel engines in tunnels. Diesel locomotives haves been introduced in tunnel haulage for reasons other than safety or health. Except to the extent that they replace trolleys, with their danger of causing electrocutions, modern Diesel locomotives do not increase safety Or remove any ordinary hazards to safety or health. In fact, they create such hazards, the extent of which is limited entirely by the carbon monoxide-content level set, method of ventilation, adequacy of the measures.

Isothermal recrystallization and grain growth in zone- and vacuum-melted irons and Fe-Mn alloys, up to 0.60 pct Mn, were studied in the range 480° to 650° C, after 60 pct cold reduction. In initial stages, rate of grain growth and rate of recrystallization of iron decrease with time. The recrystallization is typical of a growth-controlled process, and rate of growth is determined by the extent of recovery. Mn decreases rates of growth and of recrystallizatzon. The recrystallization process changes at about 0.30 pct Mn and nucleation may become time-depetzdet~t. In recent years, considerable effort has been expended in determining the effects of solute elements on recrystallization and boundary migration in fcc metals. The results have indicated that the effects produced by single solute additions are dependent upon both the element added and its concentration.'-' In contrast, there have been very few attempts to determine the characteristics of recrystallization and boundary migration in high-purity bcc metals, especially after heavy deformation, and the effects thereon of single solute elements.9-11 This study was undertaken to determine the recrystallization characteristics of various "high-purity" irons and the effects of manganese additions at two levels of base purity. It was hoped that the information obtained would improve our understanding of the recrystallization of pure metals and aid in formulating a theory for the effect of solute elements. The interest was not entirely academic, for the annealing of low-carbon steels, which is of very great commercial importance, is but poorly understood. MATERIALS The compositions of the irons and iron-manganese alloys used are listed in Table I. The zone-melted iron and Fe-Mn alloys were made by Battelle Memorial Institute. Iron S-1 was arc-melted in a water-cooled steel mold in an argon atmosphere. The ingot was forged into a bar, then given two horizontal zone-refining passes in an alumina boat. Iron V-4 was treated in a similar manner, but was not zone-refined. The iron for the zone-melted Fe-Mn alloys was induction melted in vacuum in MgO crucibles and cast into alumina molds. The ingots were forged into bars, machined to shape, and a groove milled down one side of each. The best available electrolytic Mn was placed in the grooves, and the bars were zone melted. The vacuum-melted Fe-Mn alloys were induction melted in this Laboratory in MgO crucibles and poured into cast-iron molds. Iron V-5 was purchased from National Research Corp. in the form of a small vacuum-cast ingot. The low-carbon steel was made by induction melting in air at the U.S. Steel Corp. Applied Research Laboratory. The history of the materials prior to the final cold reduction differed; these details are given in the Appendix. The penultimate grain size of the principal materials was kept in the range ASTM 2 to 4, except for the low-carbon steel. PROCEDURES The cold work prior to the final recrystallization anneal was kept constant at 60 pct. Boron, estimated to comprise about 0.001 percent of the earth's crust (Fleischer 10), as an element is never found free in nature, although its compounds are found in many localities. the borates are the most important. Sassolite (B(OH)3) and boracite (Mg6C12B1406), non-borates, are-of-minor importance. The crystal structures of most natural borates are still unknown. A classification based solely on the ratio of boron to the total number of cations has been devised (Palache 28). This classification divides the borates into four, sub-groups; anhydrous borates, hydrated borates, borates containing hydroxyl or halogen and compound borates. Only four or five minerals of the hydrated borates group have ever been used commercially. In more recent years, the sodium borates have comprised all but a 'small fraction of all borates used. Borax, the hydrated borate compound, is the most important of all boron compounds. It has been used so long and so often that the layman often confuses borax and boron and, applies the terms synonymously.

The Bureau of Mines, as a part of its goal to minimize occupational hazards associated with mining and mineral processing operations, has developed and field tested a compact exhaust air muffler for mechanized, jumbo-mounted pneumatic rock drills. The muffler is constructed of 1/8-inch sheet steel and has nominal dimensions of 1-3/4 by 9 by 13 inches. A directed air passage, flexible neoprene baffles, and an expandable slit-type outlet are incorporated to reduce drill exhaust air noise and eliminate muffler icing. Field tests in actual mining operations showed a l5-dbA reduction in exhaust noise and an 8-to 12-dbA reduction in overall drilling noise with no icing problems or decrease in drill performance. Data are presented on muffler construction, laboratory, and field test results.

The emerging importance of pneumatic conveying systems for bulk materials is becoming recognized by more persons responsible for materials management as consultants, at the corporate level and at the plant level. They have learned that the economic advantages of a pneumatic system are frequently decisive when compared to alternate methods. Included in these advantages are relative simplicity, ease of installation, flexibility, ease of maintenance, cleanliness, safety and ease of automation to the degree desired. In general, installed costs favor a pneumatic system when compared to competing mechanical systems if the transporting distances are long or to and from many points. In addition, supplemental use such as cooling, heating, or drying may supply the incremental value required to justify its selection. (1). The main disadvantages of a pneumatic system is the greater horsepower required per unit weight of material conveyed and material limits in abrasiveness and density. In addition, there is a tendency to increase material breakage at changes of direction and at any obstruction such as the imperfect butting of one, piece of pipe to another in the conveying line. Classification of the material at the discharge may also cause problems in dusting and segregation. Materials weighing less than 4 pounds per cubic foot tend to cause feeding and collecting problems although they can be conveyed easily. Material between 4 and 20 pounds per cubic foot can be handled with less problems but flow rate is hard to predict. The 20 to 60 pounds per cubic foot range offers best results; whereas, over 60 pounds per cubic foot, materials tend to drop out of the air stream and settle in the pipe line unless careful provisions are made to prevent it. In Europe, 50% of the copper originates from recycling. High-Cu containing scraps are regularly rich in impurities like Fe, Ni, Sn and Pb. Many high-Cu containing scraps are fed directly into anode-furnace casting installations or furnaces with limited refining capability. The impurities levels of the anodes produced in these processes should however remain acceptable for further electro-refining. The distribution of Sn between copper and slag has been investigated for conditions relevant to copper converting. Unlike previous studies, this work focuses on the behavior of Sn relevant to fire refining conditions, which are essential for anode refineries.In this study, liquid Cu–1Sn and CuOx–FeOy–SiO2 slag, with CaO additions, were equilibrated at 1300 °C in vacuum sealed SiO2 ampoules. After metal–slag equilibration, the samples were quenched in water. The composition of the slag and Cu metal was investigated with Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis. The distribution coefficients of Sn between slag and Cu metal were determined as a function of slag composition.

WE have just heard what must be regarded as a thoughtful, constructive and somewhat painful analysis of the financial function of our industry. While thinking about this, it is interesting to reflect on the conditions which have stunted the growth of the financial side of our affairs. Mining must be regarded as a wealthy business. •while immeasurable grub takes and development budgets have been lost, there can be little argument that a productive ore-body nearly always produces the type of wealth that breeds some extravagance. I recognize that this statement can be attacked from many sides, but an historical comparison with a commercial enterprise involving similar investment will demonstrate what I mean. However, these old times are be-ginning to disappear for a variety of reasons. High amongst these are: ( l) Increased costs of exploration. (2) Remoteness of many new finds. (3) Fixed or declining metal prices (particularly when expressed in constant dollars). ( 4) Constant demands for higher wages.

The mechanical properties of three polycrystalline intermediale Phases that have the y bvass structure were measured in compression between 400° and 900°K. At the lower testing temperatures— termed Region I— no plaslic deformalion occurred prior to brittle fracture. A1 higher temperatuves— lermed Region III—the three phases deformted plaslically for all strain rules from 1.5 to 36.0 x 10-4 sec-1. The homologous temperature for the inilialion of plaslic flow increased in the same order as tile atomic size difference between atoms in each plmse (0.50Tmp for y AgZn, 0.62Tmp for y CuZn, and 0.76 Tmp for y CuCd). The increased flow resistance oj. y CuCd above 0.50Tmp is explaitzed in terms of the more random arrangement of copper and cadmiwn atoms on the laltice sites of&apos; the y bvass slrilctlire. Plaslic deformation of the three intevmiediate phases in the smooth plaslic flow region appears to be controlled by oacancy-induced dislocation climb. RESULTS are reported in this paper on the mechanical properties of three binary intermediate phases having the complex cubic y brass structure (D82, 143m) containing fifty-two atoms in the unit cell. The structure of the prototype y brass phase, y CuZn, was first analyzed by Bradley and Thewlis&apos; based on the X-ray work of Westgren and Phragmen.2 The y brass structure can be visualized as an arrangement of twenty-seven body centered cubes (3 by 3 by 3) into a unit cell containing fifty-four atoms. From this cell the center atom and the four corner atoms are removed and the remaining fifty-two atoms are slightly displaced, resulting in the y brass structure. Approximately thirty-five binary intermediate phases that have an electron to atom ratio of 21:13 have been reported to form the y brass structure. The three y brass intermediate phases selected for this study are formed from elements in groups IB and IIB of the first and second long period. Each compound exists over a composition range that includes the stoi-chiometric composition A5BB (Cu5Zn8, Ag5Zn8, Cu5Cd8). y CuZn (a0 = 9.944A) has solubility limits extending from 57 to 67 at. pct Zn at 500°C apd melts peritecti-cally at 834°C; y AgZn (a0 = 9.326A) has a solubility range from 58 to 63 at. pct Za and melts peritectically at 661°C. y CuCd (a, = 9.596A) melts congruently at 563°C and has a maximum range of solubility extending from 58 to 64 at. pct Cd. In order to minimize coring and microporosity during solidification, the composi- tion of the compounds that form peritectically (y CuZn and y AgZn) was chosen so that the temperature difference between the liquidus and the solidus is only a few degrees centigrade. In selecting y brass compounds for this study, phases were avoided that contained a transition element or that had an electron to atom ratio greater than 1.70. Hume-Rothery et a1.3 has observed that, when the electron to atom ratio of y brass intermediate phases exceeds 1.70, atoms begin to drop out of the unit cell to maintain a constant electron to unit cell ratio. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Each of the three intermediate phases was prepared from elements having a purity >99.999 pct. Only trace quantities of impurities (<0.0001 pct) were detected by spectrographic analysis of the four elements. A master alloy of each compound weighing approximately 130 g was prepared by melting the elements in evacuated sealed quartz tubes heated in an electric furnace. Specimens having the desired diameter for the mechanical property measurements were obtained by remelting the master alloy in a Vycor tube under argon and drawing specimens from the melt into 4-mm-diam quartz tubes. To obtain a smooth surface on specimens drawn from the melt, the inside of the quartz tube was coated with a thin layer of graphite formed by thermally decompositing acetone. All specimens were imbedded in sealing wax and cut to the proper length with a diamond-impregnated cut-off wheel. The individual specimens (4 mm diam by 8 mm long) were then sealed in evacuated Pyrex tubes and homogenized at 500°C for 72 hr. Chemical composition, variations over the length of the rod (10 cm long) were generally less than 0.2 pct and the analyzed composition differed from the desired composition by less than 0.5 pct.4 Metallographic evaluation of the specimens after homogenization showed no evidence of a second phase in any of the compounds. The average grain size of the specimens after homogenization was 1 to 2 mm. All mechanical property measurements were carried out in an argon atmosphere using a compression apparatus described previously.5 Prior to applying the load to the specimen, the test apparatus was evacuated, back-filled with argon, and heated to the test temperature for 20 min to establish thermal equilibrium. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Mechanical properties measured as a function of temperature and strain rate for each of the three y brass phases were similar. From room temperature to the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature, only elastic deformation was observed prior to fracture.

Assaying, mineralogy, and geology appear in ancient records as early as mathematics, physics, and chemistry. Agricola was the first author to unify the earth sciences, the mineral extractive industries and the mineral processing industries. His text, De Re Metallica, published in Latin in 1556, is recognized as the first technical literature. In 1702 mining instruction was started at Freiberg, Germany. The purpose of this school was to train skilled workers, a program corresponding to present-day, on-job, vocational-technical, upgrading extension training. Formal instruction in mining engineering began at Schemnitz, Hungary, in 1763, at Freiberg, Germany, in 1766, and at St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1773. It is interesting to note that these three schools initiated instruction in mining engineering before formal instruction in civil engineering began at Paris, France, in 1775. Early mining engineering, 1763-1900, was expected to cover all eventualities in the mineral industries. Optional curricula were offered early in the 20th Century but did not reach into all branches until after World War I. Specialization crystallized during World War II under three organic units: (1) Earth Sciences; (2) Mineral Engineering; (3) Mineral Technology, the three together constituting the mineral arts and sciences of the modern world (Fig. 10).

An historical background is presented to provide a basis for the lack of normally expected developmental effort over the first 20-25 years of viable zirconium production operations. This is followed by a description of developing technology, which is the result of years of research and piloting effort directed to the development of a more economical method to produce high-grade metallic zirconium. It is predicted that many of the process improvements described will have a significant impact on future zirconium production methods and consequently on future prices and markets.

Halogen vapor-transport synthesis of Ga(As,-,Px) and its preparation into laser junctions are described. Electrical and optical properties of Ga(As,-,PX) laser junctions are discussed. The present limitations in these properties are related to material proble?vzs and the very early state of development of Ga(As,-,PX), and are discussed in this context. Inhonzogeneity problems, fluctuation of As :P ratio, and problems with deep-level contaminants are described and related to Ga(As,-,PX) junction performance. Laser junctions are demonstrated which operate to wavelengths as short as 6470 A (77°K). The prospect that Ga(As,-,P,) will operate to wavelengths perhaps 100A shorter is mentioned. IN this paper we wish to describe some of the more important features of almost 1 year of experience in the preparation and properties of Ga(As,-,P,) p-n junction lasers. Because much data so far available are far from complete, some of the results still must be considered tentative and subject to correction and revision as work on Ga(As,-,P,) crystal problems progresses. Although the electrical, optical, and device properties of Ga(As,-,P,) junction lasers are understandably of considerable interest, the work to date points out that by far the most serious problems extant and those deserving first attention are problems involving the growth, doping, and perfection of Ga(As,-,P,) crystals. One of the most formidable of these is to grow Ga(As,-,P,) sufficiently free of deep levels, either due to contaminants or to structural imperfections, to allow fabrication of laser p-n junctions which can be cooled and not suffer from "freeze-out" of carriers on deep levels (and consequent double-injection behavior). In addition to the problems of growing crystals adequately free of deep levels and generally of the highest perfection, so that the best possible laser junctions can be realized, the further goal remains of increasing the phosphorus content well beyond 40 pct in an attempt to determine the practical lower wavelength limits of laser action in the Ga(As,-,P,) system. Even though the laser junctions prepared in Ga(As,-,P,) are of importance in their own right, we have considered them at this point mainly a means to study the growth and crystal problems of the material. It can be concluded that the laser junctions now available are almost completely limited by the purity and structural deficiencies of Ga(As,-,P,) crystals, and cannot be fairly compared with, for example, GaAs p-n junction lasers until Ga(As,-,P,) crystal growth has been more extensively developed. The basis for the statements above will become evident in the following sections which describe Ga(As,-,P,) crystal and junction preparation, and laser-junction properties. G(As,-,P,) CRYSTAL GROWTH As previously reported,2 we have found it convenient to employ the halogen vapor-transport process3 for synthesizing Ga(As,-,P,) crystals for use in laser junctions. Commercially available GaAs and Gap, separately prepared by halogen vapor tranport, are sealed in the desired ratio in a quartz vessel with a quantity of column-VI donor and a small quantity of metal halide which supplies the halogen for transport. The sealed ampoule, as shown in Fig. 1, is heated at a temperature in the range from 1025" to 1100°C at the position of the source GaAs and Gap. The GaAs and Gap are simultaneously vapor-transported and deposited as Ga(As,-,P,) at one end of the ampoule

"The coals of the Sydney and Pictou coalfields are generally classed as high volatile ""A "" and medium volatile bituminous coals but there are significant differences within and even beyond this rank. These are related to the observation that the coalification in eastern Canada is essentially post-deformational, resulting in a general increase of rank with depth in individual seams.Exploration drilling in the Sydney coalfield has shown that the rank increases offshore to M. V. bituminous at mineable depths and in the Pictou field to L. V. bituminous coal. There is also a marked easterly shift in rank within one seam at the same depth at Sydney, with the result that M. V. coal will be reached sooner in the Donkin Reserve area (at 700 m depth) than in the Lingan-No , 26 Reserve area (at 900 m depth). These rank changes are important for the manufacturing of metallurgical coke as shown with coke stability predictions based on petrographic analyses. The L. V. coal of the Pictou field can be used for blending purposes and is the only known L. They are not constant within the confines of the Sydney coalfield. Four separate areas can be recognized, each with different coalification gradients, which can be related to changes in the paleogeothermal gradients . Variations of 2.5 degrees to 6. 7 degrees CI IOO m are indicated and geological causes for these changes are suggested.IntroductionThe Sydney coalfield is the largest and most important field in eastern Can ad a, and although it has been in production some 200 years, the remaining ""demonstrated "" resources of 1.6 billion metric tons can extend its production capability for at least another 100 years. All coals mined are high volatile "" A"" bituminous and have been used for both thermal and metallurgical purposes. For the latter rank variations even of a minor scale are of critical importance for the manufacturing of metallurgical coke.The significance at the present time of the Pictou coalfield, which has only modest remaining "" demonstrated"" resources of 60 million metric ton s, lies in the discovery in 1975 of a 14-million-ton deposit of low volatile bituminous coal. It is the only known low-volatile coal in eastern Canada and is suitable for use as a blend for metallurgical coal. As such, it could supply the Sydney coke ovens for a period of 30 years at the current rate o f coke production and replace imported American low volatile coal.Consequently, coal rank studies of the Sydney and Pictou fields are important not only from a geological point of view, but also because of economic considerations."

The establishment of the Imperial Smelting Furnace at Sulphide Coporation Pty. Limited for the smelting of zinc and lead made it necessary to design and install sintering capacity to produce approximately 500 t.p.d. of zinc-lead sinter. The updraught sintering process installed is a recent development and the plant was designed with adequate flexibility and equipment to enable operating staff to investigate the process and achieve maximum production under optimum operating conditions.Sulphur dioxide gases from the sinter machine are passed to a contact acid plant for the manufacture of sulphuric acid.

As an aid to studies of grinding, a batch laboratory classifier and elutriator has been developed at the U. S. Bureau of Mines Metallurgical Field Office at Moscow, Idaho, in cooperation with the University of Idaho. It is designed for use in conjunction with other batch laboratory apparatus, such as ball mills and flotation machines. It is shown in Figure 1. Description and Operation of Batch Laboratory Classifier The classifying column is a cylinder 4 feet 2 inches long, of 5 3/4-inch inside diameter, and terminates at its top in a cone or funnel 18 inches in diameter at the overflow elevation. The pressure chamber is of the same diameter as the classifying column, and has a conical bottom; it is provided with two openings, one in the cylindrical portion through which water is admitted, and the other, a small drain hole, in the apex of the conical bottom. The two compartments are bolted together and communicate with each other through the medium of a constriction plate provided with 3/16-inch holes spaced 1/2 inch apart. Constriction plates having any other percentage of opening may be substituted as the needs demand water is admitted to the compartment below the constriction plate at constant pressure. The volume of eater admitted is controlled with a valve. It should be mentioned that the classifying column at the bottom, just above the constriction plate, is glass.

Fluoride activation has been evaluated by Hallimond-tube flotation of collophanite in terms of fluoride concentration, conditioning time, pH, and temperature. The results reveal that efficient oleate flotation of collophanite can be achieved by fluoride activation. Fluoride adsorption by collophanite as a function of fluoride concentration, temperature, pH, and crystal structure suggests that, at low fluoride concentration, a fluoroapatite-type compound may form on the collophanite surface by chemisorption of fluoride ions at calcium sites; at high fluoride concentration, calcium fluoride ap¬pears to form at the collophanite surface invovling a surface-precipitation phenomenon. The formation of CaF2 on the surface of fluoride-treated collophanite is further substantiated by the FTIR spectroscopic measurements, which clearly shows a metathetic exchange with phosphate from the collophanite lattice during surface precipitation process.

Heavy liquids have been used to separate minerals of different specific gravities for many years.4 5 6 7 8 9/ The method permits substantially quantitative evaluation of a variety of minerals and requires much less time than the usual methods of chemical analysis. This Bureau of Mines investigation was conducted to determine the applicability of heavy liquid mineral separation to the evaluation of certain spodumene and kyanite ores, prepared mixtures, and plant products. After careful standardization of the particular mineral and associated gangue, estimates of chemical analyses could be obtained from results of heavy liquid separations.
