An earlier paper1 introduced a rapid solution for mine ventilation network problems, employing the digital computer. In this paper, refinements and additions to the computer program which expand its scope of application and a solution to a ventilation network having a coal-mine configuration are presented. Specifically, the revised program--written in FORTRAN for the IBM 7074 computer in Penn State's Computation Center--is applicable to any mine ventilation network employing natural splitting and having its fan located externally. It accomplishes the following; 1. Distributes an assumed total quantity of air flow among all air- ways of the network, performing iterations until an acceptable level of error is attained and the flow in each airway is known. 2, Computes the pressure drop (head loss) in all airways and the overall network and mine head losses. 3. Determines the operating point for the mine and a given fan, adjusting all air flows and head losses to the actual values.

Mining at the Mt Leyshon Gold Mine in semi-arid north Queensland stopped in 2002. Newmont Australia has recently initiated a thorough post-closure water management study of the site by revisiting the existing information and conducting new water-related investigations. The focus of this paper, which is the first publication on post-closure environmental management of the site, is an overview of the site water quality in view of the sources and spatial distribution of polluted mine water, and also the performance of cover systems in controlling water flux though mine wastes. Since the mine closed the rehabilitation of waste rock dumps and tailings dams have significantly improved water quality in the surface receiving waters. However, the Scats Stockpile, the Heap Leach and Old Plant areas, which can potentially produce acidic waters, enriched with heavy metals and arsenic, are the top management priority. Modelling of the potential transport of contaminants in groundwater needs further investigations. A detailed examination of the waters in seepage sumps showed high concentrations of manganese, cobalt, nickel and selenium, which were previously overlooked. The study also showed distinctive chemical signatures for waters at different locations: the waters draining from scats, supergene materials and waste rocks have distinctly lower pH and higher concentrations of dissolved iron, sulfate, heavy metals, Mg, Mn, U, Se and As. While, the tailings sumps are more alkaline, and are enriched in Na and Cl. The southern tailing sump is characteristically As rich. The waters draining from the supergene materials have higher Cu concentrations. Assessment of the cover monitoring systems showed that although covers pass the design criteria, automated recording of data may ignore any failure of the monitoring system. Recalibration of the moisture sensors not only showed realistic moisture values compared to rainfall data but also showed that the permanently installed system records values that are higher than those of the mobile system. Event-driven recording of data overlooks infiltration events. Besides, with a higher time resolution (daily measurements) the breakthroughs could be clearly detected. Modelling of the water balance in covers is underway and an example is given here. Newmont is currently reviewing water management options and is willing to share the lessons learned.

Heat-capacity measurements were made over the range 8° to 350° K on beryllium sulfate dihydrate and beryllium sulfate tetrahydrate using an adiabatic calorimeter. No anomalies were noted in the curve for either compound. Smooth values of heat capacity, entropy, enthalpy function, and free-energy function were calculated from the heat-capacity data at 10° K intervals and at 273.15° and 298.15° K. The entropy values calculated at 298.15° K were 39.01 ± 0.12 entropy units (eu) for the dihydrate and 55.68 ± 0.17 eu for the tetrahydrate.

The molecular species occurring at the mineral-reagent interface of the galena-aqueous potassium ethyl xanthate system was studied by developing a technique for using an attenuated reflection method in conjunction with standard infrared spectroscopy procedures. Lead ethyl xanthate was detected from the infrared spectra of all galena surfaces treated in the pH range of 7 to 11. At pH 8.5, lead ethyl xanthate formed as a film chemically bonded to the galena surface. A solvent extraction sampling method was employed with infrared spectroscopy to obtain quantitative data on the lead ethyl xanthate removed from the galena surface. The data showed that between pH 7 and 11 thy quantity of lead ethyl xanthate physically adsorbed decreased as the pH was decreased; in the same pH range, the quantity of free lad ethyl xanthate in the aqueous medium remained constant, and the amount of unreacted xanthate varied.

Mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing. The stage of measurement used in the chapter is normally what is termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes for some minerals the product of auxiliary processing operations at or near mines.

The mine development decision is made on completion of exploration to determine whether or not a mineral deposit should be developed to production and, if so, how. This involves the selection of an optimum mine development alternative from a number of technically feasible alternatives and the comparison of this optimum with those of other available investment opportunities. If the optimum is sufficiently attractive, the deposit is developed to production. The selection process is carried out within a framework of corporate objectives and resources. The mine development decision is based on the balancing of two parameters - - rate of production as reflected in plant capacity and cut-off grade. On the basis of available information and experience, detailed revenue and cost 'estimates are made for each feasible combination of plant capacity and cut-off grade. What economic evaluation techniques should be applied to these estimates to reduce each alternative to economic indicators that will enable meaningful comparisons and an informed investment decision? This is the essence of the paper. The determination of optimum plant capacity and cut-off grade has been the subject of intensive research efforts by economists and mining engineers (1-7). Their studies are based on marginal analysis and assume that, at the time of decision, certainty conditions prevail with respect to ore reserves, mining costs and mineral markets. The optimum mine development alternative is defined as that which maximizes profitability.

The thermodynamic behavior of dilute solutions of copper, silver, and gold in liquid tin is not explained by current solution theories.1-3 The relative partial gram-atomic enthalpies, or heats of solution, of silver, gold, and platinum in liquid lead at 623°K have been measured in the investigation reported here. Their interpretation requires a modification of the regular-solution theory although lead-rich solutions may be expected to be simpler than tin-rich solutions. The liquid metal solution calorimeter used has been described.4 At the start of a run the bath consisted of 621 g of reagent-grade lead. Several calibrating additions of lead were made during a run; a value of 3.48 kcal per g-atom5 was taken for H623°K - H273°K Two runs were made with each of the solutes silver, gold, and platinum. Annealed wire samples of 99.999+ pct purity were used. Four to six samples each weighing 0.5 to 1,0 g were added from 273°K to the bath at 623°K and the associated heat effects were measured. The samples dissolved in approximately 3 min. No serious experimental difficulties were encountered. The heat effects of the additions in a run plotted against the average atom fraction of solute before and after each addition314 were linear functions of the concentration in lead of silver, gold, and platinum, respectively. By subtracting the difference between the heat contents of a solute element at 623° and. 273°K5 from the measuredheat effects, the partial gram-atomic enthalpy relative to the solid solute was obtained. The relativ: partial gram-atomic enthalpy at infinite dilution and the concentration dependence of the partial gram-atomic enthalpies obtained from the plots of vs atomic fraction x are listed in Table I. The relative partial gram-atomic enthalpy at infinite dilution of silver in lead of 5.46 kcal per g-atom at 623°K compares with values at 723°K of 5.74' and 5.765 kcal per g-atom. These data yield a temperature coefficient of 3.0 cal per g-atom-OK. The partial gram-atomic enthalpy at infinite dilution of gold in lead at 623°K is 0.89 kcal per g-atom compared with 0.85 kcal per g-atoms (obtained by extrapolation) and 0.95 kcal per g-atom.5 By combining these values for 623°K with those for several other temperatures5" the temperature coefficient of was found to be 3.2 cal per g-atom-OK. This paper presents a case study of the deformation-based design, construction, and performance of stone column ground improvement (GI) beneath a mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall and bridge abutment with heights up to 50 feet. As part of the widening of Interstate 5 (I-5) to allow High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes in Tacoma, Washington, a new approach and span over the Puyallup River will be constructed. During the soils investigation and design phase of the project, low plasticity silts (ML) inter- bedded with silty sand layers and organic silt where identified as being potentially liquefiable. Stone column ground improvement was designed using a deformation-based approach to address static settlement and seismic stability of the proposed MSE embankments. The deformation-based design of the stone columns resulted in significant savings over a limit equilibrium-based approach. This paper presents the results of sonic coring taken from the initial stone columns installed and compares these results to the real-time data acquisition reports from the stone column installations. Vibration monitoring results during stone column installation are included. Settlement monitoring at the face of the MSE wall and buried vibrating wire settlement monitoring elements are presented and compared to the original settlement predictions.

PREVIOUS investigations have shown that lithium is body-centered cubic from near its melting point to the temperature of liquid air1,2,3 Nevertheless there was an incentive to search again for a transformation at low temperatures: C. Zener4,5 has remarked that the low value of the elastic modulus (11 - C12)/2 of body-centered cubic metals and alloys implies a rapid increase in free energy with decreasing temperature, which would favor the occurrence of a transformation; also the shear movement to which this modulus applies is one that can transform a body-centered cubic structure into a slightly distorted face-centered cubic structure. It was confirmed that lithium does not transform spontaneously at liquid nitrogen temperature, but it was found that a transformation can be induced at this temperature by cold working the metal,6 and at slightly lower temperatures a different transformation occurs spontaneously. Transformations were also found in solid solutions of magnesium in lithium. THE NATURE OF THE TRANSFORMATIONS Before presenting a detailed treatment of the technique used and the specific data obtained, it would be well to give a brief survey of the general characteristics of the transformations. A new crystal structure begins to form spontaneously in a specimen when it is cooled below a critical temperature. In lithium the structure appears to be close-packed hexagonal; in the Li-Mg alloys most of the diffraction lines (but not all) are near those for hexagonal lithium. The transformation proceeds as the temperature is lowered and soon stops if the temperature is held constant or raised. The course of the transformation on cooling is indicated by the curve at the lower left of Fig I. This curve is drawn in stepped fashion because the transformation goes by discrete steps with audible clicks. Because of the similarity to the decomposition of austenite into martensite in steels, it seems appropriate to designate the beginning of the spontaneous transformation on cooling as the Ms point. On heating to room temperature after the low temperature treatment only the usual BCC structure is found. On heating, the low temperature modification begins to disappear at a temperature which will be designated as Ac. The transformation on heating is halted when the rise in temperature is halted. The temperature must be raised 40 to 50°C above Ac before the reversion is complete-an interval which is sensitive to the rate of heating and to the time of holding at temperatures above Ac. This behavior on heating thus has similarities also to the formation of martensite in the cooling of steels.

In this study, the leaching rate of molybdenite concentrate was evaluated in sulfuric medium, and the influence of the diverse oxidants including hydrogen peroxide, manganese oxide, copper sulfate on the leaching rate was studied. Also, the effect of the addition of the ethylene glycol to the hydrogen peroxide was studied and results showed that with the addition of ethylene glycol, the leaching rate is increased 55% from 41% up to 80.3%. The optimum condition is achieved as 0.7 M of H2SO4, 4.4 M of H2O2, and 3.5 M of EG at 30 °C within 4 h of leaching time and 500 rpm. Also, inserting the oxygen with the pressure of 6 bar to the leaching autoclave, the leaching rate is increased more up to 86.4%. Finally, the leaching process was studied kinetically and the determined mode of controlling factor was specified based on the activation energy which equals 46.252 kJ/mole indicating the chemical reaction mode.

Machine breakdowns and maintenance delays are large contributors to lost production and increased operating costs in the mining industry. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating the applications of expert system technology to diagnostic and predictive maintenance tor mining equipment. This will help increase mining productivity and decrease operating costs, by reducing the frequency of equipment failures and repair times. The Bureau has begun this effort by applying expert system techniques to the diagnosis of hydraulic system problems on a continuous mining machine. This paper discusses the development of the hydraulic diagnostic expert system.

A model describing size reduction and mineral liberation during grinding has been extended to include multiple classes of composite particles. The majority of the model parameters have been directly determined using computerized image processing equipment to analyze the products from batch grinding tests. A coarse-grained sphalerite ore from Tennessee, representing a nearly ideal binary mixture of sphalerite and dolomite, has been used to experimentally validate the model for the case of dry, batch grinding. In all cases, excellent agreement has been observed between the model predictions and the experimental results.

THE Mather mine, of the Negaunee Mine Co., is within the limits of the City of Ishpeming, on the Marquette iron- range in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It is named for William G. Mather, who has served as President, and Chairman of the Board, of The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. for well over 50 years. The property comprises nearly the square mile of section 2, T.47 N. R.27 W., which, except for 20 acres in the northeast corner, was leased by The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. to the Negaunee company. The latter is a partnership of Cleveland-Cliffs and the Bethlehem Steel Co., organized to equip the property, retaining Cliffs in charge as operator. Shipments of ore from this area are mainly through Marquette, which is 16 miles to the northeast on Lake Superior, or through Escanaba, a Lake Michigan port, 65 miles to the south. Cleveland-Cliffs, in 1943, operated 12 mines in the Lake Superior district, with shipments of 6,635,576 tons for the year. GEOLOGY The north footwall of the Marquette Range synclinorium outcrops near the north line of sec. 2, the iron formation dipping to the south at an angle of about 40º. The south side of the trough reappears at a distance of 4 ½ miles on sec. 26 and the surface geology between shows iron formation or intrusive diorites. The latter are harder than most phases of the iron formation and, as a result of glacial action, appear as buttes or low-lying hills. The general elevation of sec. 2 is about 1450 ft. above sea level, or 850ft. above Lake Superior, and the higher diorite outcroppings about 1600 ft. above sea level. The geological structure has been complicated by a series of major and minor faults, one of which may be illustrated by the diorite sheet, which tilts south with the iron formation in the north half of the section and then reappears near the center to repeat this sequence. Sectionally the geological series includes a nearly eroded capping of Goodrich quartzite followed by the considerable thickness of Negaunee iron formation, which is cut by intrusive dikes or diorite sheets, and underlain by the Siamo slates grading into quartzites. The ore deposits occur mainly in troughs formed by the intersection of impervious dikes and the footwall slate, but include locally enriched lenses or bands in the iron formation and also interbedded with the Siamo slate. The ore is a soft red hematite with an indicated dried analysis from the surface drilling to date of 61.50 per cent Fe, 0.134 per cent P, 5.40 per cent Si, 2.87 per cent Al and 0.015 per cent S. Underground testing was carried out by Ingersoll-Rand, Inc., under contract to the Bureau of Mines to determine the effectiveness of a machine-mounted scrubber system for ventilating the face during an extended advance. A continuous miner equipped with an integral flooded-bed dust scrubber system was instrumented with methanometers and Real-time Aerosol Monitor (RAM) dust monitors. Methane and respirable dust data were collected at brattice setbacks of 7.5 m (current operating distance), 10.5 m, and 15 m (blowing ventilation) during production shifts. Results showed that a suitable machine-mounted scrubber system can adequately ventilate the face at brattice setbacks up to 15 m. No deterioration in ventilation performance was observed as brattice setbacks were increased from 7.5 m to 15 m. The scrubber system effectively controlled face methane levels at large setbacks, though respirable dust levels increased as much as 33 pct at the operator's cab at setbacks greater than 7.5 m.

The role of the laboratory is described in relation to the prospecting and exploration of kaolin clays. Test methods used to evaluate crude ore samples of kaolin clay for commercial consideration are reviewed. A background of the kaolin mineral and known means of prospecting this mineral are presented. Common analytical methods are discussed with special emphasis on those in use today.

This report describes a chemical process for preparing solutions of trivalent rare-earth chlorides from sulfate solutions obtained by treating bastnasite concentrate. The chief impurity in the final solution is cerium, and this element is less than 1 percent of the rare-earth oxides. The solution is used directly in the separation of rare-earth elements by ion-exchange methods. The attractive features of the process are that the chemicals are inexpensive and the steps few. The process starts with precipitating the rare-earth hydroxides from sulfate solutions with caustic soda. After the hydroxides are dried to oxidize the cerium, they are treated with dilute hydrochloric acid to dissolve away the trivalent rare-earth elements, leaving the tetravalent cerium. Details for controlling the leaching step are described. The process shortens older procedures by omitting the usual oxalate or double-sulfate-precipitation step.

The market for thermal coal has recently been growing rapidly and it is projected to continue to do so in the foreseeable future. Both the national and international markets often demand high Btu low sulfur thermal coal in order to minimize the cost of utilization and meet the environmental restrictions. High quality thermal coal can be prepared to compete in the utility market by desulfurizing the high Btu midwestern coal and blending it with low sulfur western coal which is usually low in Btu content. The methods that can be used for optimizing the coal preparation plant operating parameters for physically desulfurizing coal is presented.

Freeze and thaw deterioration is a serious problem In con¬crete pavements. The main cause of distress Is thought to be the pore structure of coarse aggregate. In an attempt to characterize deleterious pores, the Iowa Pore Index test and the Expected Durability Factor, as Calculated from the mer¬cury intrusion porosimeter, were devised. This study Included freeze-thaw and sodium and magnesium sulfate soundness testing of sixteen carbonate aggregate samples. In addition, the Iowa Pore Index and the Expected Durability factor were determined for each of the samples. All of the Above mentioned physicochemical parameters were examined using bivriate correlation analysis with the In¬tent to evaluate the effectiveness of the Iowa Pore Index and Expected Durability factor for predicting the frost dur¬ability of an aggregate. The results from the bivariate correlation analysis showed no significant correlation, between the Iowa Pore In¬dex And- Expected Durability factor with the other physico¬chemical parameters investigated. Rust interesting is that the Iowa Pore index predicted that All of the tested samples would resist freeze-thaw failure, whereas the Expected Durability factor predicted that -ash sample would he non-durable.
