"The flow properties of the blast furnace slag bearing high TiO2 at high temperature like the viscocity may change a lot due to the formation of the carbonitride inside, causing serious problems on the separation between the metal and the slag. Therefore, the critical condition of the formation of Ti(C,N) in blast furnace is vital importance for the ironmaking process with iron ore bearing titania. In this study, the formation of Ti(C,N) in blast furnace and the influences of various factors on the Ti(C,N) formation are investigated by FactSage. It is found that the mass of Ti(C,N) would reach the maximum at 1480 oC, and the product is mainly TiN below 1620 oC, while it is mainly TiC above 1620oC. The order of the factors by the importance from strong to weak was: temperature, the content of TiO2 in slag, basicity of slag, the content of MgO and Al2O3.IntroductionThe titanium dioxide (TiO2) in iron ore bearing titania will be partly reduced by carbon to titanium carbonitride (Ti(C,N)) in blast furnace, causing serious problems on the separation between the metal and the slag because of the change of flow property. In addition, the experiment is difficult to be proceeded when the temperature is above 1600oC. Therefore, it is very difficult to make clear the critical condition of the formation of Ti(C,N) by experiment."

The Kinross DeLamar Mine has been operated for more than 17 years producing precious metals dore' from ores, principally silver bearing with associated gold co-products. In late 1995 a new orebody was commissioned, the Stone Cabin orebody, and the site began a phased shift from silver dominance to gold dominance in terms of precious metals revenue. The Knelson Concentrator was selected to remove gold from a portion of the cyclone underflow stream in the grinding circuit. This paper describes the development of the flow sheet, specific mineralogical impacts on Knelson product and downstream materials, and impacts on mine/mill grade reconciliation.

The newest addition to the Anamax Mining Company's Twin Buttes copper producing complex is a by-product uranium extraction plant which was placed into service in February 1980. The plant is unusual in that it is placed internal to the copper countercurrent decantation, solvent extraction, and electrowinning plant. The plant reached full production within a month and, to date, has produced continually above design rates.

The Indium Corporation of America - Colorado School of Mines Indium Separation Technology was evaluated as a potential means of treating smelter flue dusts stockpiled at the Pintlar Corporation property in Kellogg, Idaho. The patented technology represents a method for segregating the contained indium, lead, and other metals in forms acceptable for downstream processing and recovery. Separation is effected by treating the dust with metallic sodium in a bath of molten lead. Process effectiveness was measured by determining the relative distribution of key metals between the bullion and dross products at small pilot plant scale. The study indicated that application of the technology to the Pitlar samples results in a highly efficient concentration of lead in the bullion, while indium is collected in the dross. The distribution of other key metals between the bullion and dross products and the effect of varying selected process parameters are also discussed.

The burning sulphide ores in the Sullivan Mine generate sulphur dioxide gases. This paper is concerned with a description of the environmental impact of SO2 on air quality in the mine and on the surface in the vicinity of the mine. As a result of surface caving, SO2 has been able to vent to surface and winds have carried it into one residential area of Kimberley. Monitoring practices are described.

To overcome the difficulty of accurately judging the load state of a wet ball mill during the grinding process, a method of mill load identification based on the singular value entropy of the modified ensemble empirical mode decomposition (MEEMD) and a probabilistic neural network (PNN) classifier is proposed. First, the MEEMD algorithm is used to decompose the vibration signals recorded under different load states to obtain the intrinsic mode components, and a correlation coefficient threshold is used to select the sensitive mode components that characterize the state of the original signal. Second, singular value decomposition is used to obtain the singular value entropy. Finally, the load state of the wet ball mill is judged based on the magnitude of the singular value entropy. A characteristic mill load vector is constructed from the singular value entropies of the cylinder vibration signals recorded under different load conditions and is used as the input to a PNN, which then outputs the predicted ball mill load state; in this way, a load state identification model is established. Grinding experiments are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, showing that the method can accurately identify the load state of a wet ball mill. ()

Molybdenite flotation is strongly depressed at pH higher than 9.5 in the flotation of Cu-Mo ores in sea water. Chemically sea water contains mainly Na+ and Cl- ions, but also some secondary ions, such as SO42-, Mg2+; Ca2+, HCO3-; etc., which are not necessarily indifferent for the flotation of molybdenite. The natural floatability of molybdenite in sea water and in NaCl solutions containing different secondary ions is investigated by micro-flotation tests. The tests indicate that the floatability of molybdenite in alkaline media in 0.6 M NaCl solutions is not affected by the presence of anions, such as, SO42- and HCO3-, at concentrations similar to those occurring in sea water. However, a strong depression of molybdenite at pH ranging from 9.5-10.0, is produced by the alkaline earth metal cations (Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions), dissolved in distilled water or in 0.6M NaCl solutions. It was found that effect of Mg2+ions is significantly stronger than Ca2+ ions. Effect of both ions is attributed to hydrolysis and adsorption of MOH+ hydroxy-complexes. This is followed by subsequent precipitation of hydrophilic colloidal hydroxides at the molybdenite/solution interface, and in bulk solution.

The Bureau of Mines, as part of an effort to maximize minerals and metals recovery from domestic resources, has investigated the feasibility of recovering heavy minerals as byproducts from sand and gravel, placer gold, and industrial mineral operations in northern California. Sand samples from about 50 locations were treated by gravity separation to yield heavy-mineral concentrates (black sands). Mineral compositions of the concentrates were determined by chemical analysis and mineralogical examination. Individual zircon, ilmenite, magnetite, platinum-group metals, thoria, and silica products were prepared from heavy-mineral concentrates by selective separation using low-and high-intensity magnetic, high-tension, and flotation equipment.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on the methods and costs of mining uranium on the Colorado Plateau. The Continental No. l mine is at the south end of the Big Indian mining district, San Juan County, Utah. The mine is on a school section owned by the State of Utah and leased by Continental Uranium, Inc. A 70,000-ton uranium-vanadium ore deposit was discovered as a result of an exploratory drilling program completed in 1954.

"A need for increased copper concentrate production and for less nickel contamination in that concentrate at Falconbridge's Strathcona Concentrator during 1993 required the installation of a third flotation column and improvements in the operation of the existing circuit. Innovations in wash water distributor and launder design were fundamental in achieving objectives on a new 3 meter diameter column. Minnovex plug-type spargers were tested on a 2.1 meter diameter column in order to reduce maintenance requirements. The paper details the measures taken to enhance column flotation circuit performance and the results obtained.IntroductionFalconbridge's Strathcona Mill receives 10% of the ore feed from a rich copper zone in the Strathcona mine. This ore typically grades 7% copper and 1 % nickel and, because of its high copper content, it is processed in a separate circuit ('C' circuit) which consists of conventional grinding, rougher flotation with the concentrate being treated with lime to pH 12.3 and cyanide followed by column flotation. The columns are operated with mechanical flotation scavengers and the scavenger concentrate is returned to the column feed. Testwork conducted in 1991 showed that the original flotation column (Column 2) could only produce 5.5 mtph of concentrate with less than 0.5% nickel (Figure 1).Between 1991 and spring of 1993, production was increased at times by open circuiting the scavengers. Metallurgical improvements were obtained by improving the wash water distributor of Column 2 and by wash water sprays in conventional cells (1 ). However, the scavenger concentrate assayed 0. 7 -0.8% nickel and was not acceptable for long term operation. When Copper ore production targets were significantly increased for 1993, it became clear that an additional flotation column was required. The new flowsheet employs mechanical scavenger cells on the column tails as in Column 2 circuit (Figure 2). A -parallel configuration was chosen as pulp solids fraction has been shown to be a critical variable and the second column in series would receive a lower density feed."

The dissolution behavior of gold and silver from Au/Ag alloys in aerated cyanide solutions has been investigated using rotating disc electrodes. The variables studied included concentration of cyanide, oxygen partial pressure and rotating speed of the disc. The dissolution potential and the rate of dissolution were obtained in view of the anodic and cathodic current-potential relationships. The results were discussed in terms of a mixed potential theory. The results showed that the dissolution rate of gold and silver from the alloys was partially controlled by chemical reaction, but largely by transport of either oxygen or cyanide, depending on their relative concentration under the experimental conditions employed in this study.

Many of the mines were developed.A preliminary examination of the Sultan mine was made in January 1945 by the author, who recommended investigation by drifting and crosscutting. The Bureau conducted a project at the mine from April to June 1946. Claims investigated are in sec. 20, T. 25 S., R. 58E., Mount Diablo base and meridian, in southern Clark County, Nev., about 7 miles southwest of Good-springs.The Sultan mine has been an intermittent producer of zinc-lead-silver ore since 1910. During World War II, ore was shipped to the Government stock pile at Jean, Nev., and to the International Smelting& Refining Co.'s smelter near Salt Lake City, Utah. Throughout the past year, ore has been milled and the concentrates have been shipped to the smelter."

Beutter's introductory remarks, being simply a resume of Prof. Hone's paper, with a disclaimer of the intention to criticise it, have been omitted, and the remainder of this contribution lias been somewhat condensed, without omitting any essential statements. M. Beutter, St. Etienne, France* (communication to the Secretary†):—Professor Home observes in $ 47 of his paper that the fluid-compression of steel diminishes piping by forcing the liquid and viscous metal, while the pipe is forming, or after it has formed, into the space so produced, and proceeds to study the different systems of compression, alluding to the four principal ones: Whitworth, Illingmorth, Williams, and Harmet. Having now for many years had in use the last-named process, that of M. Henri Harmet, I shall attempt to explain the difference between it and the three other processes named. The Harmet process does not diminish or close the pipe after it has formed, but prevents it from forming; and I may add that it is the only one of the four which produces this result. It is true that the Whitworth process diminishes the interior hollow by localizing it around the central axis of the ingot, which is afterwards removed by trepanning the hollow forg-ings for which this process has been, I believe, always exclusively used. The Illingworth and Williams processes, which, in my opinion, are applicable only to small ingots, of necessity allow the pipe to form, or (to use the expression of Professor Howe) they allow the surface of the lake of liquid steel to sink into the interior of the ingot, since they involve waiting a certain time before compression, so that (in the case of the Williams process) the ingot-mold can be opened without danger, or (in the case of the Illingworth process) so as to avoid the risk that the steel may enter the grooves produced by the removal of the distance-bars. The residues from mining and processing ores can often be considered as secondary raw materials. However, the material is only available in the form of fine particles (< 3 mm). In order to recycle these wastes, it is necessary to agglomerate it for transportation prior to reprocessing. The resulting agglomerates need to mechanically resist the stress of transportation and loading into the furnace. X-ray computed tomography (CT) is an established method for characterisation of internal structures in material science. This non-destructive technique can provide information on size and distribution of particles and grains. However, the information is not limited to the size, but also can yield structural features like orientation and position of cracks and fractures, which are important features indicating potential for deteriorating the agglomerates. Furthermore, deduced features such as contact conditions of inclusions or boundary surfaces can also be calculated. We studied binder-free tablets of manganese-oxyhydroxide, bentonite, kaolinite and slag powder using micro-CT. Inclusions of highly absorbing particles were identified using a watershed transformation with automatic segmentation by Otsu thresholding. Subsequently, the resulting data was analysed regarding their volume percentage, distribution in size and location within the sample. For the slag agglomerates, the volume fraction of iron could be determined. Furthermore, visible cracks were investigated with the goal to determine the long-term durability. It was shown that the data provided by micro-CT is reliable and helpful for the characterisation of industrial waste agglomerates. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted Cu exchange tests for six common clays under simulated in situ leaching conditions. Regression equations were obtained from the data expressing the Cu exchange capacity as a function of Cu concentration, pH, and temperature. Using these equations, an analysis was made of the impact each clay could have on overall Cu recovery. The results suggest that Ca and Na montmorillonite clays could have a major impact on Cu recovery and that attapulgite and illite clays could have a smaller, but still significant, impact. Kaolinite and ripidolite clays pose little threat to loss of Cu from in situ leaching solutions.

Upgrading of commercial red cake and recovery of vanadium oxide from uranium-vanadium mill solutions were investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Alternative procedures potentially useful for manufacture of high-quality vanadium oxide at the mill site were explored and developed. The simplest and best procedure for converting commercial red cake containing about 10 percent combined sodium and potassium oxides (Na20) (K20) into a 98- to 99-percent vanadium pentoxide (V205 product appeared to be a metathesis in an ammoniacal solution of ammonium sulfate. Molybdenum, as well as the alkali metal oxides, was removed from the red cake by this procedure at a modest expenditure of labor and reagents. When preparing vanadium oxide of higher grade, it was necessary to dissolve the red cake and reprecipitate the vanadium as ammonium metavanadate. Calcination at 450° C, decomposed the metavanadate and yielded oxide of about 99.5 percent V205. By recyrstallizing the metavanadate before decomposition, an oxide product approaching 99.9-percent purity was obtained.

"The inner frictional resistance of open-ended piles depend heavily on the degree of soil plugging. Many factors including pile diameter, relative density and end conditions of the piles influence the degree of soil plugging. In this paper, the effects of inner sleeves attached at the pile base on the inner frictional resistance are discussed. The experiments were conducted on a medium-dense sandy ground using smallscale model piles. The results suggest that the inner frictional resistance is influenced by sleeve height for 50 mm diameter piles although it is independent for 30 mm diameter piles. The results also indicate that soil plug height is influenced by the sleeve height. The results of the incremental filling ratio (IFR) showed that penetration of non-sleeved piles is closer to unplugged state than the sleeved piles. The results of the IFR also reveal that the degree of soil plugging is affected by the sleeve height for 50 mm diameter piles although the variation is very limited in 30 mm diameter piles. The results on the coefficient of lateral earth pressure suggested that it increases from 1.08 – 1.75 when the sleeve height is increased from 10 – 100 mm for 50 mm diameter piles.INTRODUCTIONPrevious studies have shown that the behaviour of open-ended piles is different from closed-ended piles (Szechy, 1961; Randolph et al., 1979; Paikowsky and Whitman, 1990). Open-ended driven piles are widely used for deep foundations, in particular in offshore deep foundations. Generally, it is accepted that a short open-ended pile produces a smaller bearing capacity than a similar closed-ended pile (Nauroy and Tirant, 1983). However, a long open-ended pile can produce a similar bearing capacity as a closed-ended pile due to a large inner frictional resistance mobilised between the inner pile shaft and inner soil (Lehane and Randolph, 2002). The ultimate bearing capacity of an open-ended pile, Qu consists of three components as given in Eq. 1."

A detailed study of carrier flotation of kaolin clay using calcite showed the major beneficiation mechanism to be enhanced aggregation between anatase and calcite under intense agitation conditions. In order to develop an understanding of this selective aggregation, surface charge characteristics of kaolinite, anatase and calcite were studied under simulated flotation conditions. Zeta potential of all these minerals tended towards a constant negative value in ole- ate solutions under certain conditions possibly due to adsorption or precipitation of oleate on them. However, whereas the zeta potential of anatase in the oleate solutions was not influenced by the agitation level, that of kaolinite was found to be strongly dependent on the agitation intensity. The effect of oleate on zeta potential of kaolinite was reduced by an increase in agitation intensity. It is suggested that oleate is much more firmly bound to the surface of the anatase and that this preferential attachment is responsible for the enhanced selective aggregation of the anatase with calcite. Agitation level plays a major role in carrier flotation since intense agitation is considered to en- hance both the chemisorption of oleate on anatase and preferential detachment of calcium oleate precipitate from the kaolinite surface, all of this producing a large difference in the surface properties of anatase and kaolinite, and hence in their tendency to aggregate with calcite.
