"Vanadium is widely utilized as an important element to improve the quality of alloyed steels in iron and steel industry. Moreover, the crystallization process of V-containing spinels plays a significant role due to the aim of achieving a fairly larger size of spinel crystals in vanadium extraction. Thus, a comprehensive exploration and discussion on the competitive precipitation and growth of vanadium, chromium and titanium spinel crystals in vanadium slag during a cooling process were carried out in the present study on the basis of a crystallization kinetic model. To be more specific, the abilities of forming crystal, precipitation order and suitable temperature range for crystallization of the three kinds of spinels were discussed with both theoretical and experimental methods.IntroductionVanadium is an important element which is used almost exclusively in ferrous and non-ferrous alloys due to its excellent physical properties such as high tensile strength, hardness, and fatigue resistance [1]. Various kinds of processes of vanadium extraction from V-containing hot metal are available at present. However, only four processes which are the Highveld process (South Africa), the Pan-steel process (China), the NTMK duplex process (Russia) and the New Zealand steel process (New Zealand) take the dominant positions [2, 3]. Although the type of reactor and the initial vanadium content in hot metal are different in these techniques, they share the same principle that vanadium is oxidized by oxygen into vanadium slag."

To remove hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide in automotive exhaust by oxidation , a catalyst of 4.2 percent Uз Og , 1.7 percent Cr₂ 0 , and 1.7 percent CuO supported on 1 /8 - inch y- alumina spheres was tested in a reactor in place of the muffler of a 1 / 2 - ton truck . Tests were made with both nonleaded and leaded gasolines . With the engine at operating temperature , tests were made with the engine idling and with the vehicle cruising at 30 mph . Auxiliary air was added to maintain an oxygen concentration of 3 to 4 percent in the gas leaving the catalytic reactor . The vehicle was operated for 83 hours (about 60 percent of the time with the engine idling ) and 525 miles with nonleaded gasoline . Conversions of 98 percent of the hydrocarbons and 100 percent of the carbon monoxide were achieved with the engine idling and with 7,000 ppm carbon atoms and 4- percent carbon monoxide in the feed to the reactor . Hydrocarbon conversions of 75 percent were obtained at cruising speeds of 30 mph with a feed of 1,700 ppm carbon atoms ; the carbon monoxide concentration was less than 0.3 percent in the feed and was unchanged in passage through the reactor . Identical activity was obtained initially in switching to a gasoline containing 1.9 ml tetraethyl lead (TEL) per gallon . However, there was a gradual loss in activity thereafter . Conversions in tests with the engine idling about 50 percent of the time , had decreased by 23 percent for the hydrocarbons and by 25 percent for the carbon monoxide from their initial values after 122 hours and 1,300 miles of operation with leaded gasoline . The levels of radioactive materials in the exhaust of the reactor and the radiation in the vehicle were negligible .

"INTRODUCTION The largest known deposits of ilmenite and rutile in Virginia are in Amherst and Nelson Counties. Other deposits occur in the State, but their extent is not known. One of the most promising of the latter is the deposit in Roanoke County on the T. M. Bush and the H. L. Hutchins property near Roanoke. A geophysical survey was made of the deposit, followed by core drilling. In April and May 1946, four holes were drilled, totaling 822 linear feet.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The Bureau of Mines investigated the dimensional changes of ceramic materials exposed to acid environments to evaluate construction materials for emerging technology in chemical and metallurgical processes. Six commercial ceramic materials (two red shale, two fireclay, one silica, and one silicon carbide (SiC» were exposed to H20, 20 and 30 wt pct HCl, 40 and 60 wt pct HN03, and 10 and 50 wt pct H2S04 at temperatures from 50° to 90° C for 300 days. Linear expansions ranged from a low of -0.02 pct for the silica to a high of 0.45 pct for the red shale. A general ranking of the volume expansion of the materials tested, (from high to low), is as follows: high-porosity red shale A and fireclay B » low-porosity red shale B and fireclay A > silicon carbide and silica. A general ranking (largest to smallest) of the effect of exposure environments is HCl > H2S04, HN03 > H20. An autoclave test method was evaluated. Data obtained from 8-to 24-h exposures were compared with data obtained from the 300-day exposures. The relative expansion trends were similar, indicating that this method could be used as an accelerated test.

"Molybdenum mineralization at Boss Mountain is hosted by the Triassic Takomkane quartz monzodiorite batholith and is associated with a Cretaceous monzogranite stock. Ore has been mined from a sheeted vein system that describes a partial annulus centred upon the apical region of the stock and from subvertical breccia pipes that emanate from the stock. Molybdenite precipitation is coincident with CO2 effervescence from a dilute (1.9 mole o/o NaC/ equivalent) hydrothermal fluid over a temperature range of 250°C to 370°C at a pressure of approximately 350 bars, interpreted to be greater than or equal to the lithostatic load and equivalent to a depth of 1.3 km or less.IntroductionThe chemical and thermal constraints on molybdenum transport and deposition to form molybdenum ore deposits are not well understood. To address this problem, the Boss Mountain mine in central British Columbia, operated by Noranda Mines Ltd., was chosen as a well-described (Soregaroli and Nelson, 1976), relatively small and simple example of a Cordilleran Mo~ deposit. It is situated on the northeast slope of Takornkane Mountain, 10 km west of the community of Hendrix Lake (N.T.S. 93A/2W; latitude 52°06'N, longtitude 120°56'W). Access is from 100 Mile House by nearly 90 km of road, the first 50 km of which are paved."

FEBRUARY 26TH. MORNING SESSION: The sixteenth regular meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute was called to order in one of the private dining rooms of the Albany Hotel, Monday morning, at 11 o'clock, with the President, F. W. Whiteside, in the chair, one hundred and one members being registered. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. The Treasurer reported the finances of the Institute in excellent shape. The President appointed J. B. Marks, J. S. Veach and W. A. Ream as a Resolution Committee, and Frank A. Young, M. B. Urquhart and G. A. Murphy a Nominating Committee. There being no further business the meeting adjourned. AFTERNOON SESSION: The afternoon session was called to order in the Ball Room of the Albany Hotel, with approximately one hundred members present, President Whiteside presiding. A. L. Jones read his paper entitled, "The Power Problem of the Coal Mine," and C. E. Drennan, his paper, "Why Alternating Current." These papers were thoroughly discussed, after which the meeting adjourned. EVENING SESSION: At 6:45 p. m. two hundred and fifty-three members and invited guests met in the Ball Room of the Albany Hotel for the banquet. Harry F. Nash was toastmaster, and George Sanford Holmes the principal speaker. Following Mr. Holmes speech, H. N. Wheeler delivered his humorous oration of the "Annexation of Cuba;" following this certain members of the Institute gave an entertainment depicting a fictitious meeting of the United States Coal Commission. Chester Mott, formerly a member of the Institute wrote the words and songs of the entertainment, and directed it. After the show the assembly enjoyed a dance.

This is one of a series of circulars dealing with mining methods, practices, and costs. It describes the method of sinking a shaft 60 inches in diameter with a shot drill, as employed at the Idaho Maryland mine, Grass Valley, Calif. The operation involved a great deal of experimentation in applying the shot-drill method to large bore drilling, overcoming mechanical and other difficulties which developed during sinking, and developing operating technique. Under such circumstances, costs are obviously higher than they would be after the pioneer work has been done, but even so, these actually obtained compare favorably with costs of sinking by more conventional methods. The Hidden Dome gas field, situated in Washakie County, Wyoming, was discovered Sept. 26, 1917. Subsequently five additional gas wells were completed and a large reserve was developed. For a number of years this field completely supplied the domestic market at Basin and Greybull, as well as the refinery at the latter town, and it is still supplying gas in small amounts to this market. Production is obtained from the sands of the Frontier formation at depths ranging from 1000 to 1500 ft. The original rock pressure was 725 Ib. and initial production ranged from 4,000,000 to 28,000,000 cu. ft. per day per well. Porosity of the sand, determined from the size of the productive area and the amount of gas recovered, is over 18 per cent. Area and Management It is estimated that the productive area is about 640 acres. Its outline is indicated on Fig. 5, on which are also shown the locations of holes drilled on the structure and the area of unit operation. The unit area is owned by the Ohio Oil Co. and development and operation have been by this company. No productive well has been completed outside this area. The entire area was Government land filed on under the placer mining law. Results of Unit Operation With six producing wells, or an average of one to each 160 acres, the pool is completely developed. Location of the wells was made with respect to structural conditions plus the requirement that at least one well be drilled on each 160-acre placer claim. Perhaps a somewhat more uniform spacing of the wells might have been accomplished and one well eliminated, but it must be borne in mind that the holes, on account of their shallow depth, were not expensive and that the object was to develop as reliable a reserve as possible. There is no cause to suspect that these holes have not adequately drained the reservoir and there is every reason to think that any additional wells, which might have been drilled under diversified ownership and operation, would have been an economic waste. . F. W. SPERR, JR.,* Pittsburgh, Pa.--Mr. Malcolmson states that the Carbocoal process produces ammonium sulfate in excess of that normally recovered in the ordinary byproduct coke process. Table 3 indicates that 20,000 to 25,000 lb. of sulfate of ammonia are obtained in carbonizing 1000 tons of Clinchfield coal. This is a high-grade coal and yields from 26 to 28 lb. of ammonium sulfate per ton in a modern byproduct coke oven. On the next page, 21 lb. is stated as the yield of ammonium sulfate per short ton of raw coal; this is less than the average production from any well operated byproduct coke-oven plant treating coal of the character usually coked, in Pennsylvania and Ohio. The statement as to the comparative yields of light oil is somewhat misleading in view of the results obtained during the past year or two by the more modern byproduct coke plants. The plants put in operation by the H. Koppers Co., during the past two years, are producing about 3.5 gal. of light oil per short ton of coal, and several of these plants are producing more than 4 gal. per ton. The yield of pure toluene runs from 0.45 gal. to 0.55 gal. per ton. .The quality of the light oil .obtained from the Carbocoal process is of much greater importance than would be inferred by one not closely familiar with the subject. The presence of paraffins in the benzol and toluol fractions seriously detracts from their commercial value; the benzol and toluol fractions derived fro in the Carbocoal process contain about 50 per cent, of paraffins. It should be thoroughly understood what these paraffins are. They are simply hydrocarbons that go to make up ordinary petroleum, and if a successful method for the removal of paraffins from benzol and toluol has been developed, this can at once be applied to several well known processes by which benzol and toluol can be made directly from petroleum, which have as yet been total failures on account of the contamination of these products by paraffins.

Solid-solubility relationships in the Pseudobinary systems UAS-UP, UAs-US. UAS-UC, aid UAs-UN were investigated. The first two systems exhibit complete mutual solubility, whereas the component compounds in the other two systenzs are immiscible. The above information, together with solid-solubility data joy six additional pseudobinary systems , were analyzed for compliance wilh the Hurrze-Rothery rules for rnetallic systems. The relative size difference of the component nonmetal atoms was found to be the dopainant jactor determining the extent of solid solubility between the NaC1-type uranium compounds. The anionic and covalent radii of the nonmetal atoms appear to be inadequate for these systems, but compuled radii based on rare earth compounds yield consistent results for the uranium compounds. THE actinide elements, like metallic elements of the transition and rare earth series, readily form binary compounds with nonmetallic elements of groups IV, V, and VI of the periodic table. Of particular importance are the NaC1-type equiatomic compounds with carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus, and arsenic. The uranium members of this family of compounds have high melting points, are essentially stoichiometric, and exhibit various amounts of mutual solubility. Thus, they are of interest for investigating the factors governing the extent of solid solubility. Previous investigators have determined the solid-solubility limits in the pseudobinary systems between the compounds UC, UN, US, and UP. Anselin et a1 .' reported complete miscibility in the system UC-UN. Baskin and shalek 2 and Allbutt et a1.3 reported that UP and US exhibit complete mutual solubility. Shalek and white4 reported partial miscibility in the system US-UC. At 1800°C the maximum solubility of UC in US is 40 mol pct, but that of US in UC is 4 rnol pct. shalek5 found limited solubility in the system US-UN; the maximum solubility of UN in US is 11 rnol pct at 1800°C, while that of US in UN is only 0.3 mol pct. White and askin 6 found very limited miscibility in the system UP-UC at 1800°C. Approximately 7 mol pct UC is soluble in UP, but there is no solubility of UP in the monocarbide. Phase relations in the pseudo-binary system UN-UP were investigated by askin.' Approximately 0.7 mol pct UN is soluble in UP at 1800°C, while UP is immiscible in UN. The present study was carried out to explore the extent of terminal solubility in the systems UAs-UC, UAs-UN, UAs-US, and UAs-UP. This information, combined with existing data, provided a sufficient basis on which to determine the factors governing solid solubility in pseudobinary systems containing NaC1-type uranium conpounds. I) EXPERIMENTAL 1) Materials. The compounds UC and UN were obtained from the Kerr-McGee Corp. and United Nuclear Co., respectively. The US, UP, and UAs were synthesized by reacting finely divided uranium with H2 S, pH3, or AsH3 gas at low temperature (300° to 500°C), followed by homogenization in a vacuum at moderately high temperatures (1400° to 1700°c).8-10 The materials were essentially stoichiometric, with the exception of UC, which exhibited a C/U ratio of 1.05. Oxygen was the major contaminant in these compounds, ranging from 0.05 wt pct in US to 0.30 wt pct in UC, and it was generally combined with uranium to form UO2. The UO2 content in these materials was usually of the order of 1 wt pct, and did not exceed 2 wt pct. Furthermore, no evidence was found for a high-temperature reaction between uranium dioxide and any of the compounds. Chemical analyses of equilibrated compositions in the systems UAs-UP and UAs-US showed that the non-metal atom to uranium ratios averaged about 1.01, and that the oxygen contents ranged from 0.06 to 0.22 pct. However, the small deviations from stoichiome-try or the presence of minor oxygen impurities do not invalidate the conclusions to be drawn from this study. 2) Experimental Procedures. The component compounds in powdered from were blended in the desired proportions for 5 hr in the ball mill that consisted of stainless-steel balls in a plastic container. Chemical analyses indicated very little metallic pickup from the blending operation and virtually no increase in oxygen content. The pellets were pressed in a 0.270-in.-diam steel die under 40,000 psi pressure. One wt pct of stearic acid dissolved in CCl 4 served both as a binder and as a die lubricant. Chemical analyses revealed that the stearic acid left no carbon residue in the sintered samples. The pellets were sintered in vacuum in an unsealed tantalum crucible. The temperature, measured with a calibrated optical pyrometer, was maintained at 1800" + 30°C for 3 hr. This was sufficient time for attaining equilibrium as no change occurred in either the lattice parameters or the sharpness of the X-ray patterns when samples were annealed for longer periods of time. The pellets were cooled with the furnace. Debye-Scherrer powder patterns were taken at room temperature with a 114.59-mm-diam Norelco powder camera and CuKor radiation (CuGI = 1.5405A). Unit cell dimensions were determined from a Nelson-Riley extrapolation to the high-angle reflections. There are a number of methods for determining relatively small quantities of sulfur dioxide in air. However, those methods require fairly elaborate apparatus and laboratory facilities. Frequently in industrial hygiene surveys it is desirable to have a simple arrangement to obtain "on the spot" determinations. This has been accomplished for concentrations of sulfur dioxide of hygienic significance by using the midget impinger and decolorizing a starch-iodine solution.

"Smelting reduction technology has been developed greatly in recent years. But one of the key problems for this technology is about the refractory that used as lining material in the molten bath. Investigation and test shown that corrosion rate of refractory was much higher and the corrosion mechanism was much more complexity in the molten bath of smelting reduction with iron bath than that of the blast furnace and rotary furnace technology [l-5]. The corrosion behavior and corrosion rate of Al2OrC-ZrO2 series refractory in the melt of smelting reduction with iron bath have been studied by rotary immersion and quasi-static immersion test in this paper. The major factors that affect the interaction between the melt and refractory were investigated. The test results shown that the corrosion rate of AI2O 3-C-ZrO2 series refractory decreased with the ZrO2 increasing when ZrO2 content was from 3% to 10%. Ferrous oxides content, relative moving speed between the melt and refractory and temperature of the molten bath were the important factors that affect the corrosion rate. But the ferrous oxides concentration was the most important one. The corrosion rate was increased as a linear relation with the rising of ferrous oxides content of the melt. The corrosion rate in the quasi-static immersion was much less than that of the dynamic immersion (rotary immersion) for the Al2O 3-CZrO2 series refractory in the same testing condition. The corrosion mechanism of Al2OrC-ZrO2 series refractory is: graphite oxidized in advance, then interaction between the constituents of refractory and melt taken place and deteriorate layer of refractory and new compounds were formed, the properties of refractory was changed.IntroductionSmelting reduction with iron bath is a typical technology [3, 4, 6]. The obvious features of the melt for smelting reduction technology with iron bath are much higher ferrous oxides and much more complexity melt composition and structure than that of the blast furnace technology [2, 5-8]. The properties of the melt were changed dynamicilly and constantly in reduction process. On the other hand, the behavior of the melt depends on the activity and the reduction rate of ferrous oxides in the molten bath[9]. Because of the high concentration of ferrous oxides in slag and high reduction rate in the molten bath, the corrosion behavior and corrosion mechanism of the refractory lining by melt are an important factor in development of the technology of smelting reduction with iron bath. Up to now, improving refractory quality to anti-corrosion of melt and developing high quality and long term refractory used as the lining refractory materials in the molten bath of the final reduction furnace are also the most important questions for developing smelting reduction technology."

Although some of the platinum(II/IV) and rhodium(III) chemistry is considered ?old? and well-known, the application of modern multinuclear NMR spectroscopic methods to this chemistry in solution reveals new details about their rich and relevant solution chemistry. In this paper we will briefly illustrate that the highly-sensitive 195Pt NMR shielding is an excellent probe to explore aspects such as solvation, ion-pairing, and the hydrolysis chemistry of inter alia [PtCl6-n(H2O)n]n-2 (n=0-5). Moreover the novel use of 35Cl/37Cl and 18O isotopes effects as unique NMR ?fingerprints? leading to a new and unambiguous method of chemical speciation of the numerous possible PtII/IV and RhIII complexes present in halide-rich aqueous solutions. In the case of Rh(III) chemistry a new, direct speciation distribution diagram has been established for [RhCln(H2O)6-n]3-n complexes (n = 3-6) in HCl solution at 292 K with these methods.

The benefits of proration of oil production were perhaps more concretely realized in 1932 than at any time since the oil industry adopted nation-wide production control. Reduced output of crude petroleum, which brought the daily average of the United States down to approximately 2,000,000 bbl. from a peak in 1931 of more than 2,600,000, had a telling effect on the trend of oil prices. Mid-Continent crude was advanced in price from 776, for 36-gravity oil, to $1.04 a barrel. California crude, of 26-gravity at Signal Hill, moved forward from 736 to 976 a barrel. Pennsylvania crude, the only exception to the upward trend, rose in price from $1.82 per barrel to $2.02, only to react to $1.72. This was due to local conditions which necessitated an adjustment to overcome competition from other areas of the United States. East Texas continued to exert a far-reaching influence on the crude and gasoline market during 1932. Despite the fact that oil prices were advanced in most fields, large quantities of oil were produced in East Texas in violation of state proration orders, and sold in the market at prices considerably below official postings. This created competitive conditions in the gasoline market that were felt by all refining centers of the United States. The quantity of gasoline produced from cheap East Texas crude was not large, but the volume was sufficient to influence prices in practically all sections of the country. Thus, while the industry's' economic situation showed visible improvement statistically, the unreported and unseen statistics originating in East Texas proved to be an insurmountable obstacle to the economic betterment that was otherwise apparently justified. Somewhat surprising to many was the fact that gasoline consumption was maintained within 10 per cent of the preceding year. Domestic consumption showed only a net decline under 1931 of about 8.5 per cent; exports dropped in volume to the extent of about 23 per cent. As a matter of fact, domestic gasoline consumption was only about 1.4 per cent less than it was in the predepression year of 1929. Exports, however,

[The U. S. Bureau of Mines at its Pittsburgh Experiment Station is frequently called upon to determine by laboratory tests the explosibility of suspensions in air of various dusts encountered in mines and elsewhere. Not all dusts which are combustible or contain combustible material will form explosive mixtures with air under ordinary conditions of temperature and pressure. They may not be highly combustible enough. They may contain a considerable amount of inert or non-combustible material or, the dust particles may not, be fine enough to form explosive mixtures. A knowledge off the chemical composition of a dust together with a determination of the size of the particles often gives valuable indications. But in many cases actual explosibility tests are necessary. Such a case is evidently that of powdered soap, whose explosibility hazard the Bureau was recently called upon to determine, Although an explosion which occurred in a soap plant as early as 1890 was attributed4 to powdered soap, it is apparent, due to the great number of inquiries received by the Bureau, that the hazard presented by powdered soap has not been at all generally appreciated. To the writers' knowledge, no extensive investigation of the explosibility of powdered soaps has been made. It is only recently that pure powdered soap has been manufactured on a large scale. The familiar "soap powder" in the past was usually a mixture of soap with a relatively large quantity of sodium carbonate. Often it contained large amounts of moisture and abrasive material. Even a highly combustible dust when mixed with large quantities of inert dust will not form explosive mixtures with air. Pure powdered soap, however, presents a different aspect. Pure soap is formed by combination of alkali (incombustible material) with fatty acid (combustible material). Comprehensive field tests were made in the Gas Hills, Wyo., to determine whether surface geophysical techniques could be used to detect and delineate faults in marginal uranium deposits. The tests were made on property owned by Federal American Partners, Gas Hills, Wyo., and included seismic refraction, self-potential, induced polarization, magnetometer, electrical resistivity, airborne infrared thermal scanning, and airborne photography. Of the several geophysical techniques tested in the field, horizontal resistivity profiling with electrode spacings in the range of 25 to 50 feet was most diagnostic of faults. The method is quick, cheap, accurate, and one that can be easily used by personnel employed by mining companies to detect and delineate faults.

Electric power generation remains the greatest market for coal in the United States. In 1967, about 272 million tons of coal, amounting to over 51 percent of total coal consumption, were burned to satisfy this nation's hugh demand for power. The size of the utility market is currently five times that of 1941 and continues to grow with the demand for more and more energy. A major reason for this strong market has been the ability of the coal industry to supply a superior product for combustion while maintaining competitive prices. Now that the coal industry is engaged in intensive competition with nuclear power for future energy demand, it becomes ever more imperative that superior coal products are produced. One important problem when burning some coals is a liquid phase corrosive attack on boiler tube metal in the superheater and reheater areas of the furnace where steam temperatures may exceed 1050°F.

The treatment of a complex orebody requires a thorough understanding of its mineralogy. If there is a poor appreciation of the mineralogy involved, difficulties can emerge with the efficient exploitation of the resource. Recently, there has been a lot of interest in automated image analysis systems, which aim to improve the reliability and accuracy of the data, which can be gathered. In this sense, the paper point out the process mineraloggy for complex ores. Mineral modal analysis a description of texture and liberation studies are the basis of these measurements. They have been applied to a wide range of mineral systems including copper, lead, zinc, silver and gold.

The Mile Six pool is located on the La Brea-Parinas Cullcession of International Petroleum Co., Ltd., in northwestern Peru on the west coast of South America. The reservoir pressure in this pool has been maintained within 200 psi of its initial value throughout its history, and gravity drainage has played an important role in the production behavior. It has now produced 95 per cent of its estimated ultimate recovery. It is estimated that this interesting oil pool will ultimately produce 67 per cent of the initial oil in place and that the resulting residual oil saturation may be as low as 19 per cent of the pore volume (29 per cent of the hydrocarbon pore volume). An evaluation of reservoir rock and fluid characteristics and ultimate oil recovery is presented. INTRODUCTION This study of Mile Six pool was made to evaluate its performance according to latest available information. The production performance of this pool has been discussed in various articles in the past. and the reported behavior has been used as an example for application of computation procedures for gravity drainage depletion' and as an illustration of field behavior under gravity drainage or expanding gas cap drive. There have been wide variations in reported values of initial oil in place, reservoir oil volume factor. connate-water sauration, volume of effective sand, and ultimate recovery because of the paucity of reliable basic data. These various factors have been determined as accurately as practicable with the latest available information, and this evaluation is presented herein. The production history of Mile Six is an excellent example of gravity drainage depleion with effective pressure maintenance by gar injection. GENERAL Mile Six pool was discovered by cable-tool drilling in November. 1927. when well 1996 was completed in the Parinas sand. After slow development with cable tools and sporadic production. the pool was opened to continuous pro(iuction in November. 1933. and develpment was completed with rotary rigs. Pressure maintenance was started in December, 1933. by returning gas to upstructure wells. Most of the development was 'completed by 1937, but some additional wells were drilled in the period 1939-1947. and several old wells were deepened. A total of 46 oil and gas wells and 4 dry holes were drilled on approximately 7-acre spacing. Of the producers. 21 are now flowing. 2 are pumping. 44 are gas input wells. 3 are abandoned. I is a gas well shut in. and 15 are shut in because of non-commercial production or high gas-oil ratio. The locations of all wells are shown on the map of Fig. I. Total oil production on Dec. 31. 1952, was 30,867,373 bbl: cumulative gas production was 22,023,777 Mcf; and 26,410,946 Mcf of gas had been returned to the reservoir. These figures do not include oil and gas lost ill a blowout in January. 1940. GEOLOGICAL DESCRIPTION Mile Six pool is located on the northern end of a structural spur projecting from the La Brea-Negritos uplift.' The spur is probably a reflection of a basement structure. It plunges gently to the north, i broken into a complex series of fault blocks. and contain.; the Verdun Alto. Section Sixteen. and Mile Six pools. The Parinas handstone (lower Eocene!. which is the producing formation in Mile Six. occurs at an average depth of 2,200 ft in the pool and dips north and east at from 15' to 20". The pool covers an area of approximately 350 acres. Mile Six is downfaulted about 600 ft from Section Sixteen pool to the soutb. and a major fault forms its western boundarv. The north and east boundaries are formed by the intersection of the sand top with the water-oil contact which occurs at approximately 2.440 ft subsea. An original gas-oil contact probably existed at about 1.875 ft subsea. Fig. 1 presents the latest structural interpretation of the pool. and Fig. 2 is an isopach map showing thickness of the total Parinas formation above the original water-oil contact. The heavy lints of Fig. 1 are contours on the sand top, and the fine lines are contours on the fault planes. This type of straight-line structural map was developed 1)) International's geologists to reflect structural conditions where the bedding planes dip and have no curvature. 'The La Brea-Parinas Concession is highly faulted by normal fault.. The beds are flat wherever exposed. The Parinas formation is approximately 635 ft thick. and it is etimated that 62 percent II the formation is effective sand. The original oil zone was about 565 ft thick. Fig. 211 presents an electric log showing typical Parinas sand development ill Mile Six pool. The Parinas band in Mile Six i. a well-sorted. medium- to-coal-se-grained. cross-bedded sand with minor lenses of shale and small lenses and pockets of pebble conglomerate. The sand grains are subangular to rounded and consist chiefly of quartz with feldspars. biotite hornblende, and augite as accessory minerals. Because of faulting of the Parinas- formation to the east and north of the pool. there is probably l possibility of a significant, natural water drive in Mile six. The faults within the pool. as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. are of smaller disI,laceInent and seem to act only , partial barriers to fluid movement within the reservoir. RESERVOIR CHARACTERISTICS Core analysis data are available from five wells. The data were obtained from three wells (Nos. 3401. 3586 and 3719) at the time of their completion and from well 1996 when the original liner was sidetracked and the well was deepened ill 1946. Data from well 2779 were obtained in 1943 from old cores taken when the well was deepened in 1934. From these core analyses. the average porosity was estimated to be 22.6 per cent. and the average permeability to dry ail. was estimated to be 780 and Measured productility indices varied from 3.1 to 71.4 B/D per psi differential. Specific productivity indices varied approximately from 0.1 to 0.3 B./D per psi per ft of sand.

Wheel loaders are currently being used in many mining applications for a variety of reasons. While they sometimes provide the lowest loading cost, a primary advantage of the wheel loader versus other loading systems is the increased versatility and mobility inherent in a wheeled vehicle. The advent of large wheel loaders with much greater digging capability enhanced wheel loader usage in severe loading applications. To match these severe conditions, machines offered today were designed to work in these rocky conditions. Soon after the introduction of large wheel loaders into rocky conditions, however, it became apparent to many users that tire costs could at times account for up to 50% of total hourly operating costs on large wheel loaders. In some applications, tire costs alone pushed wheel loader economics beyond the economic feasibility for these jobs, prohibiting their use. In an effort to combat high tire costs, several attempts have been made to put fast moving steel around the tires to provide a strong interface between vehicle and ground. Some earlier attempts involved wrapping tracks around tires. Mechanical difficulties with these systems limited their customer acceptance. Subsequently, the development of protective tire chains came into favor. While tire chains offered added protection to the tires, the cost and maintenance of the chains remains a problem in 1972, the Dystred arrangement was announced for usage on a 6 cu yd wheel loader from Caterpillar Tractor Co. (See Figure 1). The Dystred offered the advantages of greatly increased tread life over conventional tires, as well as resistance to tread puncture in most situations. The arrangement basically employed a track system similar to that used on track type loaders. Pin and bushing wear often caused high hourly operating costs and excessive machine downtime. In addition, the connection of shoes through the use of links, pins, and bushings forced a limitation on too speed of the vehicle.
