The U.S. Bureau of Mines performed Cu exchange capacity (CuEe) tests on Ca and Na mont-morillonites and attapulgite clays. Mathematical models were developed from the data that the CuEe's are derived from for each clay as a function of pH, Cu concentration, and the concentrations of metal ions, which compete with Cu for exchange sites. An analysis was made of the impact of competing ions on Cu losses due to ion exchange. The results show that the CuEC's of clays, and hence Cu losses, are decreased by the presence of competing ions, and that AI and Mg have the largest impact of those cat-ions normally present in Cu leaching solutions.

[THE importance of contact angles in flotation has long been recognized, but little has been done to get quantitative relationships between the surface coverage of the mineral by the reagent, the length of the hydrocarbon chain, and the contact angle. It is well known that for a complete monolayer on the surface of a mineral the contact angle ? is determined only by the reagent&apos; and principally by the chain length of the hydrocarbon radical. Although for flotation the monolayer usually is regarded as being complete, early experiments of Wark and Cox2 showed that at very small concentrations of potassium ethyl xanthate the contact angle on galena changed in a continuous way from 0° to the equilibrium value of 60°. Further, Gaudin and Vincent&apos; showed a similar continuity using heptylic acid and sphalerite. This shows that with probably incomplete monolayers, ? varies with the degree of surface coverage. At the time these experiments were made it was impossible to measure the actual amount of surface coverage, especially since the decrease of the collector concentration in the liquor could be influenced by chemical side reactions. Through the use of the radioactive tracer method for the measurement of the amount of collector adsorbed on the surface of the mineral, Gaudin and Bloecher4 were able to determine accurately the actual surface coverage of dodecylamine acetate on quartz, but they did not measure any contact angles. It is believed that the relationship between the surface coverage and the contact angle is extremely important in flotation, especially as Gaudin and Bloecher showed that a 95 pct recovery is possible with a coverage of only 5 pct. Theoretical Considerations The work of adhesion W is the energy bound (in ergs per sq cm) when an interface is formed. It is determined by, the difference of the free surface energies (surface tensions) of the respective phases ?1 and ? 2 before contact and the interfacial free surface energy ?12 after contact. The definition of the contact angle permits the elimination of the unknown surface energy of the solid and hence the calculation5 of W from the surface tension of the liquid ? and the contact angle ?: [W = y (1 + cos ?)[1]] Consider a surface consisting of two components, identified as 2 and 3, 1 being the liquid. The amount of 2 in the composite surface is x, where 0 < x < 1. The respective contact angles with 1 and air are ? and ?3. The total work of adhesion of such a surface is the sum of the values of the components multiplied by their respective areas. A formal relation can be written: [W,,,=x•W2+ (1-x).WR[2] .] in which Wm is the work of adhesion of the composite surface. Eq 1 can be introduced into W2 and W3 but in the case of Wm some discussion is needed. If the two components are segregated, each component forming an integral part of the composite surface there is no physical meaning for a contact angle ?m, calculated from Wm, by using eq 1. If, on the other hand, the area of each patch of the components is small in comparison with, say, the diameter of the bubble used in measuring, it could be expected that ?m would have aphysical significance, because of the action of the surface tension of the liquid-gas interface tending to smooth out sharp corners. The use of secondary sources has become a very attractive option in the production of platinum group metals as the demand for these metals has increased. One of the promising sources are the spent catalysts, which provide an attractive source as they have relatively high metal content compared with the ores where the metal is originally extracted from. The concentration of platinum group metals in catalytic converters is in the range of 0.1-1 mg/g as the concentration in ores is usually less than 10 ppm. Aqueous chloride solutions are claimed to be a cost effective way in which platinum group metals can be brought into solution and concentrated. In this work the effect of different parameters on the dissolution rates of Pt, Pd and Rh were investigated. The parameters investigated were the Cl- concentration, the temperature and applied potential. Chloride concentrations used were 62.5, 90, 125 and 250 g/l. Temperatures were 25, 40, 60, 80 and 94°C. Potentials were 950, 1050, 1150 and 1250 mV vs. SCE for Pt and Rh and 380, 410, 440 and 470 mV vs. SCE for Pd. Dissolution rates were calculated from the current densities determined by potentiostatic measurements. Thin wire electrodes were used in the measurements. As expected, higher temperature, higher potential and higher chloride content generally increasedthe dissolution rate. However, the effect was nonlinear and slightly different for different metals. The results show that strongly oxidizing conditions are needed in order to achieve reasonable dissolution rates. With the highest chloride content and at potential of 1250 mV vs. SCE and 94°C the dissolution rate of Pt was nearly 1 mm/h, whereas in similar conditions Rh achieved a rate of only nearly 100 µm/h. Similarly, with the highest chloride content and at potential of 470 mV vs. SCE at 94 °C the dissolution rate of Pd was nearly 1 mm/h. Keywords: Pt, Pd, Rh, redox potential

Trialkylphosphine sulphides, in contrast to their well known oxide analogues (1,2,3,4), have received comparatively little attention as metal extractants and previous studies have been biased toward analytical rather than commercial solvent extraction applications (5,6,7). The sulphides are soft Lewis bases and only from complexes readily with the limited number of metals in the periodic table which can be classified as soft acids (8) e.g. Ag+, Hg2+ and Pd2+. Consequently, these compounds tend to be more selective than the broad-spectrum, hard-base, phosphine oxide extractants such-as TOPO (trioctylphosphine oxide). The purpose of this paper is to describe a potential application of one phosphine sulphide, CYANEX® 471X extractant, in the selective recovery of silver from base metal sulphate solutions. CYANEX 471X is triisobutylphosphine sulphide (TIBPS).

"Over the last ten years an increasing number of heat and mass transfer models of solidification processes have been presented in the literature. A key component in these models is the coupling between thermal and solute fields. This is achieved by developing relationships based on the behavior at the microscopic scale in the casting (typically a secondary dendrite arm space). An important class of models in this respect are models that describe the local scale redistribution of solute alloy components-collectively referred to as microsegregation models. This paper explores this class of models.IntroductionModeling takes a key role in processing materials for properties. This is particularly time in solidification processes where current computer techniques allow for a detailed treatment of the critical macroscopic phenomena. Typically these macro scale models consist ·of three main coupled components.1. A model of flow in the melt and solid + liquid mushy region.2. A model of heat transfer.3. A model of solute transport.The focus of this paper is the solute transport component, in particular the manner in which process scale transport is coupled to transport ·at the local scale of the solid-liquid interface. This step requires a modeling of the redistribution of solutes at the scale of the secondary arm spaces in the dendritic mushy region-a process referred to as microsegregation. Basic microsegregation models use the limit assumptions of no mass diffusion in the solid (Gulliver-Scheil [l]) or complete diffusion in the solid (equilibrium lever rule) in a fixed and space. Recently, however, more sophisticated microsegregation models that account for finite mass diffusion and coarsening of the arm space have been developed [2-19]. In this paper governing equations for a general microsegregation model for a multi-component alloy in a coarsening and spacing _are introduced. During the late 1940&apos;s and early 1950?s, the Westinghouse Combustion Turbine Division built and demonstrated a residual oil-burning locomotive on six eastern railroads. Plans were made to convert to burning pulverized coal, and a single combustor was operated at a full-pressure condition in the laboratory for about two years. During the mid-1960&apos;s to mid-1970&apos;s, there was considerable interest in coal-burning MHD and a combustor was developed which would also be applicable to combustion turbines. In the early 19801s, the BCR National Laboratory (BCRNL) became affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh, and a program was begun, supported by the Stare of Pennsylvania, to develop an all-purpose combustor for use with industrial and utility boilers and eventually with combustion turbines. In this paper, we review the work of almost 40 years, indicate our present position, and propose steps to be taken leading to efficient and environmentally acceptable power generation from coal, and specifically to coal-burning locomotives.

Geophysical methods are gaining acceptance in the evaluation of coal mine ground control condition. The use of in-seam seismic investigations has contributed significantly to the body of information concerning ground control feature identification and analysis. Seismic methods have been used successfully in locating voids, faults, fracture zones, roof and floor rock interfaces, and more recently in characterizing in-seam stress distribution. Seismic tomography is an effective tool in data interpretation for several of these applications, but as is the case with other engineering application of geophysical techniques, there are limits as to how much substantive information can be interpreted from a given data set. This paper discusses some of the applications of in-seam seismic geophysical tomography, and the limits to which the transformation from raw data to information should be taken.

"Background—It has been suggested that health related job selection is a major cause of the healthy worker effect, and may result in inaccurate estimates of health risks of exposures in the working environment. Improved understanding of self selection, including the role of airway hyperresponsiveness, should improve accuracy in estimating occupational risks.Methods—We evaluated symptoms of the respiratory tract, lung function, occupa¬tional and smoking histories, and airway responsiveness from a cross sectional sur¬vey of 478 underground bituminous coal miners and non-mining controls. Workers with abnormal spirometry were excluded from methacholine testing.Results—Methacholine responsiveness (= 15% decline in forced expiratory volume in one second) was associated in both miners and controls with reduced ventilatory lung function and an increased risk of respiratory symptoms. Miners with the longest duration of work at the coal face had a low prevalence of methacholine responsiveness, compared with miners who had never worked at the coal face (12% v 39%, P < 0.01). Throughout their mining careers, miners who responded to methacholine were consistently less likely to have worked in dusty jobs than miners who did not respond to methacholine.Conclusions—These results provide evidence that workers who are employed in dusty jobs are less likely than their unexposed coworkers to show increased non-specific airway responsiveness, pre-sumably as a result of health related job selection. Surveys of workers in which responsiveness data are unavailable may underestimate the effects of dust exposure on respiratory health."

This group includes an international collection of Placer Dome people who have built mines in Papua New Guinea, Australia, Chile, the United States and Canada. This paper outlines the changing role of the Construction Group from the early days of single projects to today, when several projects are in various phases from feasibility to construction. The projects’ total annual budgets have from time to time exceeded one billion dollars. IntroductionAs the competition increases globally between the major gold mining companies, the impetus continues to build mines at the lowest cost with the shortest construction schedule. Placer Dome has more than met that challenge by building mines around the world at a pace that was not contemplated 15 or 20 years ago. Since 1960, Placer Dome has built 30 mines and expansions at a cost of nearly 4.5 billion dollars.In the last six years alone, Placer Dome has built 14 mines and expansions, worth 2.6 billion dollars. The company’s success is due primarily to Experience, Innovation, People and Standards.The diversity between projects, let alone the pace, has been a challenge. Placer Dome has built mines around the world in a variety of extreme climates and distinctive cultures. The construction experience gained from these projects has allowed Placer Dome to develop an extensive knowledge and data base making it easier to “fast track” projects.Through the years Placer Dome has developed a human resource base. It now has an experienced and adaptable core team of people able to set up construction projects and build mines anywhere in the world. By developing standards and systems to support the projects they can act as soon as a new project is approved, and complete the projects quickly and effectively. The result is that Placer Dome now has the construction expertise to build its own mines, giving them the competitive advantage that allows them to design and construct a mine in the least time at the lowest capital cost. This was demonstrated in March 1997 with the completion of the construction of two new mines in 12 months."

NOW, after a year&apos;s continued impact of war, the task of the petroleum-refining industry stands out clearly and looms up in larger aspect. This time it is not, as it was so largely in the first World War, simply a matter of increased quantity- more and more of the same petroleum products that had substantially been standard for years. In this era the emphasis is largely on newer and improved materials which had been produced, if at all, in comparatively insignificant quantities, and for which manufacturing equipment was not available on a large scale. At the beginning of 1942 four great product needs (besides a number of lesser one-) confronted the industry: 100-octane aviation gasoline, toluene for T.N.T. production, high-quality lubricating oils for aviation and Army equipment service, and petroleum chemicals for synthetic rubber manufacture.

The errors resulting from field sampling, sample preparation and analysis are investigated for drainage sediments derived from homogeneous sandstone, shale, limestone, basic igneous and granite lithologies as a background to a primary reconnaissance survey of England and Wales. Emission spectrographic analyses of approximately 350 samples for Al, Ca, Fe, K, Si, Ba, Co, Cr, Cu, Ga, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sc, Sn, Sr and V and atomic absorption analyses for Cu, Ni, Mn, Co, Zn and Pb have been treated statistically. For routine broad-scale surveys analysis of the unground -80-mesh sediment fraction proves satisfactory. Sampling error between localities in a stream is shown to be less than spectrographic analytical error for many of the elements considered here, except where mineralisation (contamination) occurs, but exceeds the atomic absorption analytical errors in most cases. Unless it it critical to reduce the amount of between-site variability (having regard to analytical errors) in the regional survey, there appears to be no advantage in the use of a more sophisticated sampling technique. The utility of moving-average maps in reducing the width of the confidence belt around the regional 'geochemical surface', and thus compensating to some extent for the sampling errors, is also demonstrated.

The flotation behavior of kaolinite and diaspore using N, N-diethyl dodecyl amine (DEN12) and N, N-dimethyl dodecyl amine (DRN12) as collector have been investigated through flotation experiments. The mechanism of adsorption of two tertiary amine collectors on surface of kaolinite and diaspore were investigated by FTIR spectral, Zeta potentials measurements and calculation of molecular orbital energy. It has been found that DEN12 and DRN12 have stronger collecting power to kaolinite and weaker collecting abilityto diaspore than DDA. Kaolinite and diaspore in bauxite ores can be separated by using DEN12 and DRN12 as collectors at pulp pH below 8 and 6, respectively. The results of zeta potentials and calculation of molecular orbital energy indicated that the adsorption strength on kaolinite surface is in the order DEN12>DRN12>DDA and the adsorption strength on diaspore surface is in the order DDA>DEN12>DRN12. FTIR spectral analysis and Zeta potentials approve that the action between kaolinite and tertiary amine collector is strong electrostatic adsorption and that of diaspore is weak electrostatic adsorption in the range of pH 5~6.

"The macrosegregation patterns and convective behavior of a Pb-5wt%Sb-35wt%Sn alloy are studied using new numerical treatments of solid particle motion and of transport phenomena occurring during the solidification of ternary metal systems. At this composition, the solidification which occurs while the local liquid composition is in the (Pb)-(SbSn) binary eutectic trough has a significant effect on these phenomena. The effects of this solidification path on fluid flow and macrosegregation are compared to the more familiar binary alloy patterns and the effect of solid particle transport is evaluated. The final predictions of macrosegregation are compared to measured composition profiles. IntroductionThe macroscopic maldistribution of alloy constituents during solidification, commonly called macrosegregation, is a defect which occurs in real metal processing systems. This nonuniformity of species distribution, especially when it forms a high composition gradient or a poor distribution of secondary phases, can lead to areas of high stress concentration, which contribute to cracking during extrusion or forging of wrought alloys or when an as-cast piece is severely loaded in service [1, 2]. Macrosegregation studies in binary systems have become quite common since the introduction of single-domain numerical models which feature one set of conservation equations and boundary conditions for an entire, fixed computational domain containing solid, liquid and multiphase regions. A complete review up to 1995 has been presented by Prescott and Incropera [3]. However, most commercial alloys generally have more than two species in amounts significant enough to affect the convective flows which lead to macrosegregation and other defects. The formation of secondary solid phases, including eutectic and peritectic reactions, also may occur in commercial metal alloys and should be treated using appropriate thermodynamic models."

For many years, underground workings in the Bou Azzer mine have been challenged by geotechnical problems related to the serpentinite instability. The stage of evaluation of the compression potential is crucial to develop an appropriate drilling method and the choice of non-standard support. This research work presents a retro-analysis of serpentinite behavior in underground excavations at different depths, using a multi-approach method, based on several empirical and semi-empirical and theoretical-analytical methods, calibrated by the observational method. The analysis performed in this work reveals that underground excavations in Bouazzer East and Ait Hmane area would encounter compression problems that were recognized as the most serious from a depth of 300 m because of the effects of lithology and tectonics. Therefore, the Aghbar region has a slightly negligible compression potential. The compressive failure mechanism in this mine, depending on the mechanical strength, is started at induced stress of 9 MPa.

El presente trabajo refiere los resultados de las pruebas sobre el empleo de las membranas filtrantes en la colección y análisis de muestras de polvo. De los resulados, se encontró que las muestras de polvo colectadas con membranas filtrantes para el estudio de su potencialidad silicógena, deben ser disueltas en acetona u otro solvente orgánico, para evitar los errores por defecto a que da lugar la transparencia del cuarzo y otros minerales con índices de refracción próximos al 1. 5 cuando se emplea el método directo. Asimismo, el método de la disolución en acetona se corresponde con los resultados del método Impinger, eliminando el problema creado por la excesiva acumulación de las partículas de polvo en las membranas filtrantes,considerándose como el más adecuado para espacios polvorientos.

In recent years, the environmental issues related to the landfill shortage received considerable importance. Many polymeric solid wastes have high resistivity to chemical and biological degradation, and options are sought by which these wastes can be recycled and reused, or reduced in volume. The present study investigated the biodegradation of polyethylene by Aspergillus niger, and biodesulfurization of rubber by pure and mixed cultures of Thiobacillus thiooxidans and Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The fungus, A. niger, was found to metabolize portions of polyethylene. Quantitative calorimetric measurements revealed that the amorphocity of the sample decreased during biodegradation. Removal of sulfur from synthetic rubber samples containing 2 to 15% sulfur, was studied in shake flask experiments and the associated oxygen consumption was studied in Warburg respirometers. The mixed bacterial cultures were more effective in the desulfurization of rubber samples than the pure cultures of T. thiooxidans and T. ferrooxidans. The data obtained in these studies may have far reaching consequence for the development of new effective processes regarding the remediation and management of discarded polymeric packaging wastes and car tire rubber materials.

An analysis was conducted to determine the effects of blasting on slope stability and downstream comminution processes. To investigate these effects, the extent of blast-induced rock damage and the magnitude of induced stress were examined. This analysis showed that damage may extend up to 500 m (1 MPa, tensile strength) into the rock mass, a distance that is sufficient to have an impact on the pitscale slope over the long term. In addition, the damage zone was calculated using the assumption that compressive waves are the primary agent in microfracturing during blast fragmentation. The calculated damage zone — up to 2.2 m (43 MPa, rock mass compressive strength) — indicates that microfracturing can occur throughout 20-50% of the entire rock mass in the blasting area, depending on the blast geometry, burden and spacing. Finally, an economic analysis was conducted by comparing two assumed blasts in a copper mine. The change in energy required for crushing and grinding was demonstrated using Bond’s law after increasing the blast energy from 180 kcal/t to 350 kcal/t. A total cost saving of 13.3% ($9.4M) was achieved with the increase. However, the benefits of blast-induced microfracturing must be balanced against the potential impacts to slope stability to ensure safe conditions, a top priority in mining operations.

This paper will detail the work that has been done in 1990 and 1991 at the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC) on the development of the U.S. Department of Energy&apos;s (DOE) patented Micro-Mag Process. This process entails the use of a micronized-magnetite (minus-10 microns) and water mixture for cleaning fine coal (minus-600 microns) in a cyclone, along with the production and recovery of the magnetite. Emphasis will be on the results from micronized-magnetite recovery testing using both conventional wet-drum and high-gradient magnetic separators in which several key operating conditions were varied including feed percent solids, magnetite-to-coal ratio, magnetite grade, and feed rate. Also presented will be selected results from testing done on a 76-mm diameter cyclone at a relative density of 1.50 showing the effects of operating pressure, magnetite grade, and medium-to-coal ratio on separation efficiency. In addition, two methods for producing micronized magnetite, along with the corresponding size distributions, will also be discussed.
