A gaseous chlorination process for hydrometallurgical treatment of a chalcopyrite concentrate was investigated. The overall process is visualized to consist of low temperature chlorination-selective oxidation, followed by aqueous chloride leaching and SX-EW for producing electrolytic copper elemental sulfur and ferric oxide. In this article, the chlorination phase of the processes is described. Initially, the chlorination behavior of chalcopyrite-concentrate micro-pellets was investigated using a small batch-type fluidized bed reactor. The optimum conditions thereby established was used in continuous chlorination tests. The chlorinated products thus prepared were used in the selective oxidation phase of the investigation.

An infrared external reflection spectroscopy (ERS) technique has been developed to study the structure of the adsorbed layer of ethyl xanthate formed on copper and natural chalcocite (Cu2S) electrodes. The infrared technique provides information concerning the identity and the orientation of the adsorbed species at monolayer and submonolayer coverages. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies have also been conducted to monitor changes at the surface. The results show that the first oxidation peak on the voltammograms for copper and the first and second oxidation peaks on the voltammograms for chalcocite electrodes are not characteristic of a chemisorbed xanthate species, which is contrary to what has been reported by other investigators previously. As evidenced by the XPS spectra, there was an increase in sulfur relative to copper on the copper and chalcocite surfaces over the potential region where these oxidation processes occur. The spectroscopic results (ERS, XPS) indicate that the second and third (on copper) and the third and fourth (on chalcocite) oxidation processes recorded on the voltammograms are due to cuprous ethyl xanthate adsorption. The orientation of the adsorbed molecules of xanthate was observed to change with increasing surface coverage. Therefore, it has been concluded that xanthate can modify the copper and chalcocite surface in two different ways. At lower potentials, xanthate is a source of sulfur for the formation of a sulfur-rich surface. At higher potentials, an adsorption layer of cuprous ethyl xanthate is formed. Contact angle measurements show that both of these processes of xanthate surface modification lead to an increase in the hydrophobicity of the substrates.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a wide variety of columbium and tantalum alloys and to determine their suitability for use at elevated temperatures . Sixty - nine columbium and tantalum alloys were investigated . For this study , columbium was alloyed with two or more of the following : nium, tungsten , vanadium , titanium, and zirconium . Tantalum was alloyed with vanadium or hafnium, or hafnium and carbon . The fabricability was determined by an arbitrary procedure . Hardness measurements , elevated - temperature tensile properties , and oxidation- resistance studies were made . Of the alloys studied , Cb - 15 Hf - 5W, Cb - 15Hf - 5W- 10Ti , Cb - 15Hf - 10W- 10Ti , Cb - 10V - 5W, Ta - 30V , and Ta - 20 to 33Hf exhibited excellent high - temperature properties . These alloys were not only easy to fabricate , but they also had good oxidation resistance and excellent high- temperature strength .

"1 INTRODUCTIONThe use of nondestructive testing (NDT) methods to evaluate the integrity of Augered Cast-in-Place (ACIP) and Drilled Displacement (DD) piles has been a subject of significant debate among engineers, contractors and NDT practitioners. This guideline document will illustrate the importance of reviewing all available information in conjunction with the NDT records. ACIP and DD piles have unique properties that must be considered when using a specific NDT method. Any evaluation of the integrity of an ACIP or DD pile must also include a thorough review of the detailed pile installation records and the site specific soil conditions. Long or theoretical descriptions of the methods have not been included in this publication. More detailed information about these NDT methods including their theoretical and historical backgrounds can be found in DFI’s Manual for Non Destructive Testing and Evaluation of Drilled Shafts (2004). Additional information can also be found in the more comprehensive textbook Nondestructive Testing of Deep Foundations by Hertlein and Davis (2006).1.1 PurposeThe intent of this guideline is to provide practical guidance for the proper interpretation of NDT results on ACIP and DD piles. Short descriptions of the main integrity methods available are provided along with several examples of how to use all of the information available to make sound engineering judgments about the results. This publication is a state-of-the-practice guideline to promote accurate engineering evaluations.For engineers inexperienced with NDT, these guidelines provide sufficient background information on NDT methods to help understand the limitations of the testing, assess the results presented to them, and formulate appropriate questions. This is particularly important for engineers charged with the responsibility to determine from those results what, if any, consequences there may be on the performance of the structure under construction."

Many factors about the HIC (hydrogen-induced cracking) resistance of pipelines are discussed in this paper. The main factors that influence the ability of HIC are environmental and material factors. The chemical compositions, non-metal inclusions and microstructure are discussed in detail, while a group of tests on HIC resistance are done according to varying C, S, Mn and P contents in pipeline steels, different experiment time and different strength to the coupon. It is concluded that decreasing the amount of C and S can obtain good HIC resistance; the test time has an effect on the different microstructure of X70; microstructure is the most sensitive factor for the initiation processes of HIC.

The markets and applications of Wyoming bentonite deposits are primarily determined by the functional properties of a bentonite ore which results from the unique mineralogy and chemistry of each deposit. Commercial bentonite products contain sodium montmorillonite as the major mineral component, with minor concentrations of accessory minerals such as quartz, opal (silica hydrate), mica, feldspar, gypsum and zeolites. The chemical composition of the sodium montmorillonite influences the functional properties of the bentonite in significant ways. The type and concentration of various accessory minerals also influence the acceptability of the bentonite in each market.

Investigations have been conducted at Chino Mines Company into the effect that SAG mill recycle material (critical size) exerts on SAG mill throughput and specific energy requirements. Tests were conducted on the laboratory, pilot, and plant scales, to evaluate the merits of alternative treatment options. Removing critical size material from the SAG mill circuit has been shown to improve new feed rates by 34% with a reduction in specific energy (kWh/ton) of 33%. Test results obtained to date are presented.

In 2009 the Gold Quarry open pit mine, located 11 km northwest of Carlin, Nevada, USA, experienced multiple large-scale slope instabilities of the upper east highwall that reduced gold ore extraction for nearly 18 months. The slope instabilities occurred within a weak, consolidated sedimentary sequence that exhibits strength characteristics that are transitional between soil and rock. Instability initiated as mining exposed the lower clay-rich sub-units of the Carlin Formation (Fm.). This deformation created preferential flow paths that allowed groundwater from the upper sandy sub-units to infiltrate low permeability clay-rich sub-units, thereby enhancing deformation of the slope toe which in turn destabilized the upper portion of the highwall. The outcome was a 160 m high slope instability that had a lateral run-out of 850 m. The effort to return the pit to ore production required both the geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations and the preliminary remediation mining activity to be concurrent. This approach required the development of detailed safety procedures and a requirement to modify the remediation design as new results were obtained. An initial challenge was to mitigate a near vertical, 90 m headscarp with blast induced, localized slope failures. Back-analyses applying numerical modeling indicated that the failure surface did not coincide with initial interpretations based on field observations; drilling results eventually confirmed this alternative failure geometry. The final remediation design incorporated shallower slope geometries and an approximately 3 Mt buttress along the base of the Carlin Formation and bedrock contact to reinforce the lower clay-rich sub-units. The outcome is a stable highwall within the Carlin Fm. following nearly ten years of repeated slope instability, and an example of the necessity to conduct appropriate geotechnical and hydrogeological studies during the early stages of a new layback evaluation or new open pit development.

The island of Jamaica consists predominantly of Carbonate rocks which vary in chemical & physical characteristics. Currently these rocks are used for construction and road aggregate, landfill and as a raw material in the manufacture of cement. Over the past fifteen years the Geological Survey of Jamaica with assistance from a number of international aid agencies and the private sector have identified deposits of high calcium/high brightness limestones which have the potential to be utilized as a high quality filler and a number of other commercial applications. Geologically, these limestones are formed within the Eocene Swanswick Formation, the Oligocene Walderston-Browns Town Formation and to a lesser extent the Miocene Montpelier and Newport Formations.

Fine coal cleaning by froth flotation has become common practice in the U.S. with more than 80,000 tons treated in this way per day. In spite of this large tonnage, developments in the automatic control of coal flotation circuits have lagged significantly behind those for mineral systems. One reason such developments have been limited is that instruments have not been available for the on-line measurement of carbon or ash and another critical variables in coal slurries. A second reason is that the influence of the operating variables on coal flotation has not been completely understood. During the last few years some of the required instrumentation has been developed and an improved knowledge of the flotation process itself has occurred through mathematical modeling; as a result certain control strategies for coal flotation are beginning to emerge. This paper attempts to evaluate several control strategies using a detailed flotation dynamic simulator, DYNAFLOAT. After constructing a process matrix for the system of interest, promising alternatives for linking manipulated and controlled variables have been analyzed. In order to develop combined grade and recovery control strategies, the authors found it necessary to construct a grade/recovery map with the aid of the simulator to drive the system to known final, feasible grade/recovery operating conditions. Finally, an advanced strategy which uses an on-line model to identify disturbances and take control actions is proposed.

Distribution of temperature within the lithosphere can be significantly affected by the movement of ground water. Stallman (1960) presented the basic equation for the simultaneous transfer of heat and fluid in a porous medium and first used earth temperatures to determine aquifer permeability. Subsequently, studies of rock and soil temperatures were used to determine the flow of water through clay layers separating aquifers (Bredehoeft and Papadopulos, 1965; and Sorey, 1971), and to locate shallow aquifers (Cartwright, 1968; Birman, 1969). Cartwright (1968) showed that shallow aquifers maintain a nearly constant temperature throughout the year and that heat is exchanged between the aquifer and land surface. These temperature data also suggest that shallow aquifers hydrologically connected to surface-water systems have significantly greater effect on temperature distribution than aquifers in the deep artesian basins. Water wells developed in the shallow glacial and dolomite aquifers to depths of over 122 meters (400 feet) in northern and central Illinois produce water at temperatures very close to the mean annual air temperature. An analysis of the character of the rocks and soils suggests that the tem¬perature gradient should, and does, vary according to changes in thermal conductivity due to changes in lithology. This is because, under conditions of steady and uniform flow of heat from the earth's interior to the surface, a greater temperature gradient is required in poorly conductive rocks than in highly conductive rocks to transmit the same quantity of heat. In the cyanide process, gold and silver are dissolved from crushed ore as double alkali-metal cyanides, from which they may be precipitated by such positive metals as sodium (amalgam), aluminum, or zinc, or by electrolysis. Two extreme conditions may be noted. Some works, especially slime plants practising decantation, use a relatively large volume of solution—possibly 4 or 5 tons per ton of ore—nearly all of which may require precipitation, so that the solutions handled are of much lower value per ton than the ore. On the other hand, in some leaching plants it is possible to extract with very little solution, and to percolate some of this more than once through the charge before precipitation, so that the solution to be precipitated may be much less than half the weight of ore, and proportionally richer. Solution intended for further use need not have all its precious metal removed, but any that has to be thrown away should be impoverished as far as is economically possible. In spite of certain advantages possessed by other precipitants, zinc in some form has been almost universally used.. In some of the first attempts to utilize cyanides as gold solvents, a "piece or plate of zinc" was suggested as a precipitant, but extension of surface was early recognized as a desideratum. . Macarthur and the Forrests adopted a "metallurgical filter" of zinc shaving, turned from disks or rolled sheets. They had previously experimented on other forms of zinc, ax! Mscarthur records having tried zinc dust, which had of course been long known as a general reducing agent. It had also been known and used as a precipitant of precious metal from plating and photographic solutions, and comminuted zinc had been patented for recovering copper, etc., from ore leaches. Other inventors proposed the virtual making of zinc powder by the attrition of balls of zinc, and by similar means, during the passage of a stream of gold-bearing solution. Proton microprobe and electron microprobe analysis are being used in combination for in situ determination of the trace element contents of oxide, sulphide and silicate minerals in a sample of the Merensky Reef. Initial results indicate that chromites contain only Ni, Zn, Ga, Zr ar d Nb. Platinum-group elements, if present, are at concentrations less than 2 to 6ppm. Ru, Rh and Pd are the only platinum group elements to be consistently detected in the sulphides. PentLindite is the most important host for these elements with the concentration of these elements being dependant upon the mineral association in which it occurs

Records show that systematic water flooding was begun as early as 1935 in Greenwood County and in 1937 in Butler County. Water flooding on some earlier projects in Greenwood County were described in a Bureau of Mines Report of Investigation.2/ This report presents a discussion of 4 projects -2 in Butler County, 1 in Greenwood County, and 1 in Butler and Greenwood Counties. The location of these projects is shown in figure 1. The projects have been in operation 6 to 12 years and have recovered about 6.6 million barrels of additional oil from the injection of 84.7 million barrels of water. Three of the projects take advantage of the elevation of the nearby hilly terrain, and water from the treating ponds flows by gravity through the filters into the clear-water tanks. By utilizing gravity flow, fewer pumps and less electrical energy is required, resulting in more economical operation.

The Rex mine is one of several zinc deposits in Ozark and Howell Counties, Mo. It is the second of these deposits investigated by the Bureau of Mines in an effort to demonstrate reserves of sulfide ore underlying the shallow carbonate ores from which the district's major production has come. The initial investigation was made during 1945-46 on the Alice mine, Ozark County, Mo.21 The investigation reported herein was conducted during 1947. The Rex open pit is about 250 feet long, 100 feet wide, and about 25 feet deep (average). Three caved shafts are evident in the bottom of the pit, but the extent of the workings from these shafts is not known. The Bureau of Mines drilled five churn-drill holes in and around the Rex pit to test the grade and the vertical and lateral extent of the deposit. Two of the holes indicate notable zinc mineralization ranging from less than 1 to more than 10 percent metallic zinc, but largely in the oxidized condition.

The interest in using halogens for extracting precious metals from ores has increased due to changes In ore characteristics, environmental concerns and regulations. The rediscovery of halogen leaching capability has been the topic of these and other writers1-30. Much work has been done on the performance of bromine, chlorine and iodine5-29. Of these, bromine and chlorine look most promising. Iodine is quite expensive and sometimes forms an Insoluble film on a precious metal surface22,23. Little experimental work has been published on the relative performance of bromine versus chlorine. The Pourbaix diagrams for the halide leach system (see Fig. 1-4) Indicates a significant stability advantage for bromine In forming complex ions with gold. This should result In greater extraction of gold under similar leach conditions and Is evaluated In this work. The regeneration of halogen from a spent leech solution is a critical requirement for an environmentally acceptable halogen leach process. Bromide can be oxidized In-situ to bromine ~ adding chlorine or ozone2,31. Bromide like chloride can be oxidized In an electrochemical cell to produce halogen on demand 13,15,17. Bromine clearly offers a number of possible regeneration pathways. This work strives to compare the relative ability of chlorine and bromine to extract gold from partially and fully oxidized ores. A commercially pressure oxidized sample was evaluated under a number of experimental conditions. The autoclave feed ore from the same mill was also evaluated after complete oxidation In a laboratory autoclave.

The Henderson mine site is located at Red Mountain on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains, approximately 50 miles west of Denver, Colorado. The mill site is on the west slope of the Rockies and mine and mill will be connected by an underground railroad. All designs were for a 30,000 ton per day molybdenite processing plant with provisions for future expansion up to 50,000 ton per day if required. This plan did not just happen, but slowly evolved over the course of about three and one-half years. Many plants cannot afford such a delay, but the Henderson project will take about 10 years from the time it was first discovered until production starts, and these 3 !1 years were well spent in determining the best possible plant site and flowsheet. This paper describes some of the problems and the decisions made in arriving at the final location and flowsheet. The paper does not go into the specific details of how protection of the environment went hand-in-hand with all other project considerations. This particular aspect of the planning has been well-reported on other occasions and considerable information on it is readily available.
