"A major problem of short-fiber composites is that the interfaces between the fiber and matrix become a limiting factor in improving mechanical properties such as strength. For a short fiber, a strong interface is desired to effectively transfer load from matrix to fiber, thus reducing the ineffective fiber length. However, a strong interface will make it difficult to relieve fiber stress concentration in front of an approaching crack. Stress concentrations result in fiber breakage. We report in this paper an innovative approach to overcome this problem: reinforcement morphology design. Short-fibers with enlarged ends are processed and used to reinforce a polyester matrix. The initial results show that the bone-shaped short-fibers produce a composite with significantly higher strength than can be attained with conventional short, straight fibers.IntroductionThese interfaces between the fiber and the matrix in short-fiber composites play a critical role and, in many cases, become a limiting factor in improving such mechanical properties as strength and toughness of the composites (1-4). A stronger interface can reduce the ineffective length at both ends of the fiber and, therefore, can increase the effective length that carries load (5-9). However, with a strong interface it is difficult to relieve fiber stress concentration -in front of an approaching crack; and such stress concentration can result in fiber breakage (10, 11). This effect is particularly severe for ceramic matrix composites, because of their low matrix toughness and lack of plasticity. Even for a composite with a highly ductile matrix, such as plastics, too strong an interface may still cause successive adjacent fiber breakage and subsequently reduce composite toughness (1, 11). On the other hand, a weak interface significantly decreases the fiber load-carrying length due to ineffective load transfer and complete fiber interfacial debonding and pullout during loading. A compromise in the interfacial bond strength will also compromise the load-carrying potential of short fibers."

Air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) flotation is a new, promising technology, and, since its conception, numerous applications have been successfully tested. Nevertheless, research and development efforts have continued to improve the technology with respect to operating conditions and design considerations. Results, from experimental studies on bubble generation in the ASH system are presented in this paper. Bubble size distributions generated during ASH operation were determined using a high-speed photographic technique. The influence of many factors, including surfactant concentration, water flow rate, and porous-tube pore size have been studied. Test results indicate that these process variables have a profound effect on the bubble size distribution. With an increase in surfactant concentration or water flow rate (shear field), the bubble size distributions become narrower and shift toward smaller average bubble diameters. However, the influence of pore size is more complicated. Depending on the experimental conditions, the average bubble size was found to range from about 100 to 300 µm in diameter.

The Pan American Mine, in southeastern Nevada, is about 26 miles west southwest of Pioche, Nevada, and about 266 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah. The mine is located in the Comet Mining District, and since the ore occurrence is generally the same in the Comet and well known adjacent Pioche Mining Districts, the history of the two shall be considered the same. The Pioche District began about 1869 with the production of high grade gold and silver from fissure veins in the Cambrian Prospect Mountain quartzite. Peak production was reached in 1872 and then declined with sporadic production until 1924, when Combined Metals Reduction Co. shipped its first, complex sulphide ores mined from the CM bed at Pioche. Extensive ore bodies in this CM bed attracted interest in the same bed in the Comet District. Small pockets of high grade silver-lead were mined from fissures cutting the CM and other limestone beds above. Exploration in the CM beds at this time proved a large area of mineralization too low grade to be considered ore.

A brief literature review on metal separations by ion exchange and solvent extraction of their thiocyanate complexes which are practiced in analytical chemistry as well as in industries was performed. Owing to the poor stability of free thiocyanic acid in acidic aqueous and organic media, technical and environmental problems which cause high thiocyanate consumptions often arise during the practice of the separation processes. This prompted the conducting of a second and more thorough literature review on the chemistry of thiocyanic acid. The objectives of this undertaking are to compile and interpret literature data on the physical properties and chemical reactions of thiocyanic acid, thus providing a clearer understanding of the causes of these problems and giving options as to how to minimize them. The best answer found for carrying out the separation processes is to keep the temperature, thiocyanic acid concentration and total acidity as low as practical.

Pilot plant test work in 1942 and 1943 showed that by a combination of desliming, fine-size classification, and Sullivan deck concentration it is possible to recover heavy minerals such as cassiterite at least as fine as 10 microns in size. This appreciable improvement in gravity concentration practice has been substantiated by several full-sized plants.

A list of permissible mine equipment approved by the Bureau of Mines before January 1, 1940, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circu- lar 71103. Information Circular 71584, published as a supplement thereto, listed equipment approved during the calendar year 1940. The present list contains the information given in those two circulars, as well as approvals issued during the calendar year 1941. It embraces electrically operated air compressors, coal drills, conveyors and loading machines, electrical equipment for mine fans, mining machines and trucks, mine pumps, rock- dust distributors, room hoists, storage-battery gathering and haulage locomotives, storage-battery power trucks and shuttle cars, mine telephones, junction and distribution boxes, electric cap lamps, flame safety lamps, electric hand and trip lamps, electric flood lamps, flashlights, methane detectors, and single- and multiple-shot blasting units. The equipment listed is not approved by the Bureau of Mines until found by inspection and test to comply with minimum standards of safety as outlined in "schedules" prepared upon the basis of many years of ex- perience in dealing with safety problems confronting the coal-mining in- dustry. The use of such equipment in mines that are known to be gassy,. as well as in those that may become so, is earnestly recommended in the interests of safety. This circular is published so that the industry may be kept informed as to the many types of machines, devices, and lamps that are available for reducing explosion and other hazards incidental to coal mining.

Experimental studies on high carbon steelmaking through LD Converter - Vacuum Arc Degassing - Bottom Pouring route to produce low oxygen steels were carried out. The results indicated that it is possible to produce steel with a total oxygen content of less than 15 ppm. Thermodynamic and mass balance calculations are made on low-carbon steels that are treated by a complex deoxidation practice based on primary deoxidation of aluminum, manganese and silicon additions; followed by secondary deoxidation of vacuum degassing with simultaneous additions of aluminum. The results showed that primary deoxidation is mainly due to aluminum and the effect of carbon under reduced pressures on deoxidation of molten steel that is already killed by aluminum is negligible. The effect of process parameters on total oxygen content of steel, like carbon content, slag composition and inert gas purging, are discussed.

The flotation chemicals are important in mineral processing, and new progress is made in this area day by day. For sanidine purification, some commercial collectors, which can be harmful to the environment, are used. In that respect, the poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers, which are non-toxic for the environment, are good candidates for flotation applications. In this study, the second-generation PAMAM dendrimer was used as a collector to remove magnetite from sanidine by microflotation method, and obtained results were compared with commercial collectors. The results showed that the PAMAM dendrimer is an efficient and selective collector for magnetite. PAMAM adsorption mechanism was determined by zeta potential and FTIR spectra. According to the microflotation results, 87.76% of magnetite recovered at pH 8 by using PAMAM as a collector. It was found that the flotation recovery with the PAMAM dendrimers is similar to the Aero 704 between pH 2 and 6 but less between pH 6 and 9 and more between pH 9 and 12. All experiments were carried out five times and the standard deviation of all results was evaluated with p = 0.05 confidence interval. The second-generation PAMAM dendrimers can be an alternative flotation chemical to the commercial ones concerning usability at a wide pH range, recovery potential, and environmentally benign.

Cobalt-base hardfacing alloys used for wear resistance consist almost entirely of metals largely imported into the United States. As part of an overall research program to help alleviate this foreign dependency, the Bureau of Mines has been investigating an iron-base alloy system as a potential replacement for cobalt-base alloys for some uses. To ascertain the melting ranges, thermal analyses were made of cast heats of alloys containing, in weight percent, 59-61 Fe, 16-19 Cr, 8-9 Ni, 1 Mn, 1 W, 1 Mo, 0.5 Cb, 0.6 Si, 0.3 C, and 0-12 stoichiometric TiB2. Powder alloys within this range of composition, prepared by mechanical alloying, were sized and applied to mild steel test coupons by nontrans-ferred-arc plasma spraying. The resulting thin coatings were >95 pet dense, with bond strengths of 35 MPa and hardness of 400 to 840 DPH. Abrasive and adhesive wear test data were compared to those of a plasma-sprayed cobalt-base alloy. A range of boride contents resulting in most promising properties was determined for further research.

THE primary object of the work described in the following pages was to simplify the equipment in the separating circuit of the heavy-media process by substituting a spiral classifier for the separatory cone. Mechanical considerations were the leading attraction and the best that was hoped for on metallurgical performance was that the new vessel would give results equal to those obtained by conventional equipment. Tests have demonstrated in commercial operation on iron ore that the mechanical advantages of the spiral separator are about as predicted; also, the metallurgical performance is superior to the cone on the ores treated. Treatment of iron ore involves the separation of two products: a concentrate that sinks and a float product that contains true float material plus a controlled division of interfering middling. The middling material is heavier than the average specific gravity of the separating medium. Recent work with the spiral separator on Tri-State zinc ore showed that the middling material had to be recovered as concentrate because this fraction contained the bulk of the-zinc in the ore. It has been demonstrated that it is possible to make three products with the new separator on an ore such as this: a float tailing, a float middling, and a high grade heavy sink product. It appears from this last work that the new separator has definite mechanica1 and metallurgical advantages over any type of separating cone for treating feed that contains large amounts of material of a specific gravity close to that of the separating medium. However, either type of separator should perform equally well, metallurgically, on feed that is free of middlings. Each series of experiments with the spiral separator as required additional work to fully develop the possibilities of the machine. For this reason the paper is divided into chronological parts. History of Development A drag-type classifier was first proposed as a substitute for the cone separator by Butler Brothers technicians during the initial tests with galena medium at Crosby, Minn., in 1937. The desire for finding a substitute for the cone arose from trouble with interfering middlings and certain operating disadvantages of the cone. The possibility of using a spiral classifier was also suggested at this time by Emmett Butler and C. J. Abrams. However, inability to satisfactorily recover fine galena, which was used as a medium, terminated all development work at Crosby. During the winter of 1937--1938 investigation started on magnetic medium with concurrent s development of the inverted or closed- top cone, which was found necessary to eliminate iron-ore middlings with the float product. THE memorable features of American history have been making fast during the last century, and notably so since 1860; and they are by no means confined to political or to any one branch of scientific development. Of all the industrial arts, none show a greater change or a mightier progress than the Bessemer manufacture. And this year, while we are celebrating the first centennial of our national life, we can also celebrate the first decennial of American Bessemer practice. While not forgetting or undervaluing what has been done in other countries, I have thought that a brief history of the introduction and development of the Pneumatic or Bessemer process in America would be of interest. In 1863 the Kelly Pneumatic Process Company was formed and an arrangement entered into with William Kelly, who had taken out letters-patent of the United States, Nos. 16,444 ; 17,628, re¬issued as 505; 18,910, dated January 10th, 1857 ; June 23d, 1857; November 3d, 1857; and December 22d, 1857, respectively. This association was composed of the Cambria Iron Company, E. B. Ward, Park Brothers & Co., Lyon, Shorb & Co., Z. S. Durfee, and, later, Chouteau, Harrison & Valle joined the combination. Not satisfied with possessing the control of the Kelly patent, they sent Mr. Z. S. Durfee to England, to secure for this country Mushet's patent on recarburization, No. 17,389, dated May 26th, 1857, the same having been taken out in England on September 22d, 1856. In this Mr. Durfee was successful. Previous to the application of William Kelly for a patent, Henry Bessemer, of England, had taken out patents dated February 12th, 1856, and August 25th, 1856, in this country. Kelly claimed priority in the discovery of the principles of the process, and the Patent-office allowed his claim by granting him his patents. In the autumn of 1862 Mr. Alexander L. Holley, while in England, was impressed with the importance of Mr. Bessemer's inven¬tion, and so fully foresaw its future, that, upon his return to the United States, he induced Messrs. John A. Beneficiation of coal is a water intensive process, and the water is recovered in downstream operations in the high rate thickener (HRT) and vacuum belt filtration (VBF). Clean coal particles entering the HRT have an inherent tendency to enter the overflow because they are extremely fine and hydrophobic. Hence, flocculants (polymers) are used to floc the ultrafine particles so that they settle and enter the underflow. Ultrafine coal particles (−37 μ), which are highly hydrophobic, if present in the stream, will not be efficiently captured by using flocculants alone. This is observed in the normal plant operation at one of the beneficiation plants in the Jharia region, Jharkhand, India. Approximately 6–7% of the feed to the HRT enters the over flow (supernatant water). Hence, this amount of clean coal particles is not recovered and account for production losses. A comprehensive settling and dewatering test work was conducted with clean coal slurry using several commercially available reagents. Studies were also done on different combinations of reagents, including coagulants and surfactants along with flocculants, to improve the settling behavior of the coal particles. The reagents were assessed based on their performance with respect to settling rates, overflow water clarity, and compaction of the underflow solids. Emphasis was given to the ability of the reagents in compacting thickener underflow to higher densities so that maximum water could be recovered from the thickener. Pretreatment of highly hydrophobic coal slurry with a combination of coagulant and surfactant followed by flocculation showed very good settling characteristics with clear overflow.

Deformation mechanisms in room-dry and water-saturated specimens of Charcoal Granodiorite, shortened at 10-4s-1, at effective pressures (Pe) to 100 MPa and temperatures to partial melting (?1050°C) are documented with a view toward providing criteria to recognize and characterize the deformation for geological and engineering applications. Above 800°C strength decreases dramatically at effective pressures ? 50 MPa and water-weakening reduces strength an additional 30 to 40% at Pe = 100 MPa. Strains at failure are only 0.1 to 2.2 percent with macroscopic ductility (within this range) increasing as the effective pressures are increased and in wet versus dry tests. Shattering (multiple faulting) gives way to faulting along a single zone to failure without macroscopic faulting as ductility increases. Microscopically, cataclasis (extension microfracturing and thermal cracking with rigid-body motions) predominates at all conditions. Dislocation gliding contributes little to the strain. Precursive extension microfractures coalesce to produce the throughgoing faults with gouge zones exhibiting possible Riedel shears. Incipient melting, particularly in wet tests, produces a distinctive texture along feldspar grain boundaries that suggests a grain-boundary-softening effect contributes to the weakening. In addition, it is demonstrated that the presence of water does not lead to more microfractures, but to a reduction in the stresses required to initiate and propagate them.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the factors that cause agglomeration of lignite by freezing during winter shipment and sought methods to avoid it. Tests showed that lignite may be freezeproofed by removal of the relatively small quantity of moisture involved in forming the frost crystals which cement particles together, or by controlling the crystal characteristics. Adding dried lignite fines proved to be an effective and superior freezeproofing method. Commercial adoption of this method has been successful.

Detrital minerals of mantle origin have been found in the Green River Basin of Southwestern Wyoming (Figure 1). Pyrope, pyrope-almandine, and chrome-bearing clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene occur on the antmounds of Pogonomyrmex Occidentalis. These antmounds are a common sight throughout the western U.S., and were used by early paleontologists as fossil mammal collection sites. The mound is composed of two types of material; (1) soil excavated during the digging of the nest below the surface (maximum depth 3 meters) and (2) larger grains collected from the surface and placed on the mound, probably to prevent erosion. The selection of grains to armor the mound seems to be based largely on the mean diameter of the grain, with other factors such as weight, sphericity, roundness and composition in decreasing order of importance (Wheeler and Wheeler, 1963). The minerals of this study happen to fall within that mean diameter range. The garnets are found on the mounds as 3-6 mm diameter subrounded to subangular grains. The pyroxenes are also 3-6 mm in diameter and are most commonly subangular laths. The minerals themselves show evidence of abrasion, such as frosted surfaces and rounded edges. Orange peel texture is present on some of the grains, which suggests that kelyphitic rims were once present, but have been removed. Also, no similar minerals were found in sieved soil auger samples to depths of 2 to 6 meters taken near the antmounds. These observations imply a distal rather than proximal source for the minerals. Lamproitic rocks of upper mantle origin are found bordering the "Green River Basin. The best known are the Leucite Hills, a series of ultrapotassic volcanics found on the north flank of the Rock Springs Uplift (Carmichael, 1967). Minor occurrences of mica peridotite and ultrapotassic volcanics are also found on the western end of the Uinta Mountains in Utah (Best, et al, 1968). None of these rocks are known to contain minerals like those on the antmounds. The garnets are comprised of purple chrome pyrope, red chrome pyrope-almandine, and pink to orange low chrome pyrope/pyrope-almandine. Oxide statistics for these groups are summarized in Table 1. These three groups are distinct when their Cr203 values are plotted against magnesium number (Figure 2). The chrome pyropes are highest in Cr203 (1.28-2.66%) and have high, restricted Mg number values (0.781-0.826). The chrome pyrope almandines have similarly high Cr203 (1.29-2.62%) but a lower Mg number range. The low chrome pyrope/pyrope-almandines have the lowest Cr203 content (0.09-0.73) and the widest Mg number range (0.534-0.836). Using the classification scheme of Dawson and Stephens (1975) the chrome pyropes are most similar to garnets derived from kimberlite and from garnet lherzolite, websterite, and harzburgite xenoliths in kimberlite. The chrome pyrope-almandines and the low chrome pyrope/ pyrope almandines are similar to garnets derived from eclogite nodules (Figure 3).

The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum in Leadville, CO seized the opportunity to show off during its 10th anniversary induction banquet on Sept. 6. "We wanted to make people more aware of the mining hall of fame and museum," said Carl Miller, its executive director. The annual event honors inductees into the Mining Hall of Fame. This year, the inductees included Paul Wheeler Allen, Joseph Rosenblatt, Arthur Fay Taggart, Joseph Toy, Joseph Wharton and John Benjamin Zadra (ME, August, pp. 60-63). Allen, of Pasadena, CA and Rosenblatt, of Salt Lake City, are both living. Only Allen was able to attend. This year's induction banquet was the first held in Leadville, North America's highest incorporated city, at 3,094 m (10,152 ft) above sea level. The banquet gave attendees an opportunity to see the museum in its century-old 6,500-m2 (70,000-sq ft) Victorian schoolhouse. Many of the 350 guests came in 1890s dress to the black-tie affair. The evening included a cocktail reception and an open house along with a catered, prime rib dinner. During the open house, attendees had the opportunity to tour the museum's 12 rooms of exhibits and displays. Among items of interest, it was noted that a framed directory of inductees now enhances the entrance to the hall of fame. The directory is organized by the inductees' names and the location of their plaques, allowing visitors to quickly find hall of fame members. Noted mining historian and author Duane Smith delivered the keynote address at the banquet. After the induction of the six honorees, attendees danced to the big-band era music of the Leadville 17-piece band BandAge. Karl Elers was the master ceremonies for the evening's program. He is a member of the hall of fame's board of directors and is chairman of Battle Mountain Gold Co. Allen was honored by the presence of 26 former colleagues and associates. He told the audience that he originally thought the museum should have been located in Denver. "But I have been proven wrong," he said. For many years, Allen was the operational executive of Cyprus Mines Corp. and a key participant in the company's growth. Allen received a replica of his mining hall of fame plaque from Thomas Falkie, chairman of the hall of fame's board of governors and president of Berwind Natural Resources Co.

THE method of stope surveying as practised at the Mount Lyell Company's mines has been evolved out of the exigencies created by special conditions. It presents some novel features, and has proved effective for all requirements. All stope measurement work is brought under one complete system, to which office methods are standardized. Before proceeding to deal with the subject a brief description of the physical characteristics of the ore-bodies of each mine and the method of stoping will serve to show, cause ,for departure from ordinary survey practice.NORTH LYELL MINEThe ore-bodies of this mine occur on or near the conglomerate schist contact, and, being probably the result of replacements of both rocks, they rarely present any definite walls. It is usual for the payable material to merge into the respective countryrocks, and the limit of the occurrence is defined rather by assay value than by any distinct natural boundaries. The general configuration of these ore-bodies, therefore, is highly erratic both in horizontal and vertical section, so that, in order to obtain an accurate record of any occurrence, the measurement of the actual contour at short vertical intervals is essential.Stoping is carried out on a modification of the "rill." system, perhaps more properly described as "arched back" or "dome" stoping. Mullock rises are placed in as convenient positions as the erratic configuration of each ore-body will allow, and aroundthese rises the back is kept well arched, both longitudinally and transversely. A study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to evaluate natural gas as an automotive fuel and to provide guidelines for optimum engine adjustments for low exhaust emissions. The study was conducted using a single-cylinder engine, a multicylinder engine, and a total of eight vehicles. Results from single-cylinder engine tests showed that the light-load, lean-limit misfire region for natural gas begins at an air-fuel ratio between 150 and 160 pct of stoichiometric. Changes in ignition timing significantly influenced emissions of nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons, but had little effect on carbon monoxide emission. Low emissions can be achieved with current-design engines by adjustment of engine parameters, but only with heavy penalty to engine performance. Emissions from vehicles fueled with natural gas are virtually unaffected by ambient temperature change within the range 20° to 100° F. The organic emissions from engines fueled with natural gas were estimated to be 22 to 25 pct as reactive as the emissions produced using gasoline. Levels of exhaust emissions from vehicles fueled with natural gas were unchanged over 10,000 miles of normal driving.

Rare earth compounds, such as samarium-cobalt compounds and neodymium-icon compounds, are being used more often for the manufacture of permanent magnets, because these materials permit the production of permanent magnets with higher magnetic energy potential than the conventional ferrite magnets. Especially, the recent rapid developments in the field of electronics and electro-technology have demanded an increased production of rare earth magnets. Unlike ferrite, which is typically produced by a wet process, rare earths can be ground and classified either in a wet or dry process. In the past, batch ball mills, through-pass ball mills in circuit with air classifiers, and conventional jet mills were primarily employed for the dry processing. These methods, however, have suffered from the problems, for example, wear and contamination, low product quality In particle size distribution, difficult to adopt inert-gas operation, and high specific energy consumption. In this report, dry processing of rare earth powders will be presented, especially ultrafine grinding with fluidized bed jet mill.
