Introduction This papers describes some of the latest improvements that have been incorporated or planned by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. to reduce operating costs and improve pellet quality. The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. operates and manages mining, beneficiation, and pelletizing operations in Michigan, Canada, and western Australia. This paper deals with the grate-kiln pelletizing operations at Republic, Humboldt, Tilden, Empire, and Pioneer in Michigan, and the Adams and Sherman in Ontario, Canada. Table I characterizes each operation in regard to location, ore type, pellet capacity and date that pellets were first produced. All of the operations with the exception of Pioneer and Tilden, utilize downdraft-two-pass grate cycles of drying followed by preheating. Pioneer utilizes an all-downdraft, three-pass grate cycle which consists of three drying zones followed by the preheat zone. The Pioneer and Tilden cycles have been described previously (Lindroos and Koski, 1966; Villar and Dawe, 1975; Koski, 1977). Tilden utilizes a three-pass grate cycle with a stage of updraft drying, followed by two downdraft drying stages. Recuperation systems which supply hot gases to a drying zone from second stage cooling were designed and fur¬nished for Tilden I. Tilden II will be identical. Empire IV will also be furnished with a recuperation system. The Adams grate¬kiln system was retrofitted with a recuperation system. This paper will summarize some of the efforts that are in effect or planned for grate-kiln pelletizing systems to: (1) reduce operating and maintenance costs, (2) reduce energy requirements, (3) improve product quality, and (4) meet environmental standards.

Conventional wisdom in the mineral processing industry leads one to believe that pressure oxidation of refractory carbonaceous (preg-robbing) ores is not a practical approach to process development. Initial acid pressure oxidation testing on carbonaceous sulfide ores at the Twin Creeks Mine supported this conventional wisdom. After testing other refractory process options, including air and oxygen enriched roasting, Santa Fe Pacific Gold decided to take a second look at pressure oxidation, using conditions outside the normal range of conventional practice. A combination of very fine grinding and high operating temperature and pressure resulted in significant increases in gold extraction. This paper details the effect of operating parameters developed for Twin Creeks on gold recovery, sulfur oxidation, carbon oxidation/passivation and preg-robb through the laboratory and pilot plant investigations.

The object of this paper as to show that the structural composition of an alloy may be found by the planimetric measurement of the total area occupied by each of the constituents on a few representative photomicrographs of this alloy. When the area is determined the volume and the proportional weight of the constituent may be calculated. This method has been used for the determination of the structural composition of binary eutectics and other binary alloys with known constituents; also the composition of unknown constituents in binary alloys. The accuracy of the method is. high enough to justify its application to metallographic problems instead of the chemical analysis. THIS work has for its purpose the establishment of a new method for determining the structural composition of alloys. The area occupied by a constituent on a few representative photomicrographs of the alloy is measured, by a planimeter, especially designed for metallographic work, and the volume and proportional weight of the constituent calculated. Experiments have shown that 'the results are accurate enough to justify the application of the method to many problems in metallographic research instead of chemical analysis. The advantage of the method is the possibility, of determining the amount of the constituents with-out separating them from the alloy; their composition may also be determined if the ultimate chemical analysis of the alloy is known. By a system of parallel lines drawn short equal distances apart all figures may be divided into trapezoids. As the area of a trapezoid is equal to its median multiplied by its altitude, the relation between the total areas of the black and the white figures comprised within each strip is equal to the relation between the sums of medians for these figures respectively.

THE lack of Aryan roots for the names of metals commonly known among the Aryan settlers of Asia Minor, as well as the later colonizers of Europe, indicates that these races were generally ignorant of the use of metals until they came into contact with Semitic peoples. Practically all mining-terms in current use among the earliest Greeks resemble very strongly their distinctly Semitic equivalents, which can be traced all the way in a broad belt beginning in Lower Mesopotamia, and extending westwardly to the Syrian shores of the Mediterranean. The Greek word " "metallon," for instance, used indiscriminately to designate mine or ore, probably came from the earlier Semitic equivalent, " matal." Again, the Greek words " chrysos " (gold) and " chalkos " (copper) seem to be descended from the Semitic forms " throats " and a chalak." It is a natural inference that primitive mining-methods were evolved by the dwellers in the mineralized areas of Asia Minor, from whom later Greek, Roman, and even North European miners obtained their first notions of the reduction of metallic ores, by virtue of a general westward migration of mining and metallurgy. Some traces of its passage through Turkish territory will be noted in this paper. While European Turkey can boast of one ancient gold-field, the Asiatic dominions of the Sultan may lay claim to at least two well-defined and widely-separated gold-producing districts. The behaviour of galena, chalcopyrite and tetrahedrite during floration of a fine-grained base metal ore from New Brunswick was investigated by image analysis study of the mill concentrates and tailings. The minerals were analyzed to determine the grades and recoveries as related to free and unliberated mineral grains and their size distributions. The results show that only 37 wt % of the galena was liberated but 88 wt % of the free galena was recovered, indicating good mill performance for the lead. The lead recovery was 65 wt %, with the main loss due to unliberated galena. Most of the unliberated galena lost to mill tailings is so fine-grained that galena liberation and Pb recovery would not improve significantly by re-grinding. Chalcopyrite liberation was 56 wt % but only 75 wt % of the free chalcopyrite was recovered. Copper recovery was 45 wt %, with the chalco-pyrite loss in the mill tailings being both as large free grains, and as small and large unliberated grains. It was calculated that copper recoveries could be improved about 8 to 10 wt % by changing the concentrator operations and by regrinding. Concentrator operations hive already been modified and copper recoveries have improved about 5 wt %. About 29 wt % of the silver was lost to tailings mainly as both free and unliberated, large and very small, Silver-bearing tetrahedrite grains. It was calculated that about 25 wt % of the silver in the tailings might be recovered by improved milling conditions and by regrinding.

1. Reserves have been estimated for three coal beds in Bledsoe County, Tenn.: Morgan Springs, Lantana, and Sewanee. The Richland and Nelson beds occur in Bledsoe County also, but there was not enough information on them for making an estimate of reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves for all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 43 million tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 22 million tons represents coal 28 inches and more thick. Areas in the beds were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics were insufficient for making an estimate conforming with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves deter-mined by this investigation.

Four chloride and seven fixed-nitrogen processes for recovering manganese from domestic resources are described. The chloride processes are divided into two classes (leaching and chloridization) depending upon the major operation responsible for converting the manganese minerals to the chloride from which manganese oxide products are obtained. The fixed nitrogen processes, all of which yield high-grade manganese oxide products, are essentially either leaching or roasting processes. The 11 processes include HC1 leach, HC1 chloridization, HC1 chloride volatilization, CaC12 chloride volatilization, NO2 leach, HNO3-NO2 leach, NH3-CO2-H2O system leach, (NH4)2SO4 leach, (NH4)2SO4 roast, and ammonium salt roast.

According to reports in August, Botswana RST's copper- nickel-cobalt smelter at Selebi-Pikwe produced 7 percent above the rated capacity of about 3,500 metric tons of matte per month. This record production occurred after 2 years of plant production difficulties and was brought about by a new management team. A shutdown for furnace maintenance had been planned for this year, but was postponed because of the improvements in production and operations. However, the mining operation continued to face problems relating to higher costs and some outstanding claims. COPPER: Effective December 1, ASARCO, Inc. and Phelps Dodge Corp. reduced their domestic copper prices by 54 per pound. Within a period of 3 days, a11 other producers (Kennecott Copper Corp., Newmont Mining Corp., Cities Service Co. , Copper Range Co. , Duval Corp., and Inspiration Consolidated Copper Go. ) had either lowered or discounted their market postings by 5¢ to 65.625¢ per pound on electrolytic wirebar and 65$ on cathode plate. Between November 29 and December 3, New York merchants decreased wirebar quotations by 1.8¢-2¢ to within a range of 57.8¢-58¢ per pound. New York Commodity Exchange (COMEX) spot-contracted copper in the week was priced at 57. 1¢ on Monday, 56.7¢ on Wednesday and Thursday, and 57.4¢ on Friday, resulting in a 5-day average of 56.9¢, London Metal Exchange (LME) cash (prompt) wirebar averaged 56.3¢ last week, opening Monday at 56.6¢, falling from Tuesday?s high of 57.2¢ to Wednesday?s low of 55.6¢ and closing Friday at 56.1¢. Foreign producers, guided by LME market transactions, lowered wirebar quotes to 56¢ per pound. Copper stocks as of December 3 totaled 187,702 short tons at COMEX warehouses and 654,573 tons at LME depositories, compared to 97,413 and 537,481 tons, respectively, for the corresponding 1975 period.

As part of its overall program of coal-carbonization research, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals from various fields of this country. Few of the coals included in this survey are used for the manufacture of metallurgical coke, although some well-known coking coals necessarily are tested to provide comparative data, particularly on blending properties. The overall objectives of the study were given in detail in a previous report.3/ The inherent suitability of coal for metallurgical purposes, as distinguished from economic considerations, depends primarily on (1) the available reserves, (2) chemical composition, (3) preparation characteristics, and (4) carbonization behavior. These items are considered in selecting coal for carbonization tests.

The theory of sampling has progressed slowly over the last century. The concepts of correct sampling were known to mining engineers such as D W Brunton in the 19th century. It was recognised early in the 20th century that the Poisson distribution of particles carrying the target analyte was the key to the uncertainties between samples of a given mass. However, no efforts were made until the 1980s to determine the entire sampling distribution as a function of sample mass. The variance of sampling was made clear by Gy and others, but none attempted to determine the entire sample assay density function until J H Venter in South Africa applied the method of characteristic functions to the problem.Venter applied the method to a specific case of very low analyte concentrations in samples of very fine particle size where his assumption of constant sample mass was justified. When his general methodology is applied to the more general problem, it can be shown that the assumption of constant sample mass is no longer justified and leads to some anomalous results for sampling variance. Venter’s method can be expanded to allow for a statistically variable sample mass and to take into account the size distribution of particles that carry no analyte.This paper presents the basis of Venter’s work and shows how the approach can be easily modified to yield results for the variance that are consistent, for example, with the work of Gy. It is also demonstrated that the entire sampling distribution can be determined without undue computational burden when sufficient information on the material heterogeneity has been collected.CITATION:Lyman, G J, 2014. Deformation and recrystallization textures of the a solid solutions of Cu-P, Cu-As, and Cu-Sb alloys are examined as a function of composition. It is found that the deformation texture of copper is unckanged up to a composition of 0.43, 0.41, and 0.24 at. pct of phosphorus, arsenic, and antimony, respectzvely, and then the transition to the 70 : 30 brass type of deformation texture proceeds linearly as the logarithm of the solute content. Recrystallization textures consist of strong, new components that do not all bear the usual<111> rotational relation to the deformation components. The dependence of the deformation texture transitions and the recrystallization orientations upon composition and solute-element type is discussed. A systematic evolution of individual recrystallization components in the annealing texture of copper was portrayed as a function of germanium or tin content in a previous study.&apos; Similar patterns of tex-tural change have been observed with copper-zinc alloys,2 and in less detailed studies of other systems.3,4 In fact, most of the literature dealing with preferred orientations in copper alloys indicates that the influence of solute elements upon textures in copper is of one general type. As the alloy content of copper is increased, the deformation texture changes from the copper type to the 70:30 brass type, and the annealing texture undergoes a comparable change from the (001) [ loo] orientation of unalloyed copper to the {113} <211> type of 70:30 brass, with the notable exception of copper alloyed with Periodic Subgroup V-B elements.4-8 In almost every case it is possible to describe the reorientations after annealing as 30 to 40 deg rotations about <1ll> poles of the deformation components. Since there is apparently not much difference in the final textures of the copper binary systems already investigated, only a limited variety of preferred orientations has served as the basis for current theories of the origin of annealing textures. In order to test the validity of the proposed theories, and the possibility that the <111> rotations are not unique, it would be most desirable to study the reorientation relationships of additional, and heretofore unanalyzed, recrystallization components if such components exist. Examination of the literature reveals a good deal of uncertainty concerning preferred orientations in copper alloyed with elements in Subgroup V-B of the Periodic Table. Phosphorus is known to inhibit the cube texture in copper when present in amounts as low as 0.01 wt pct,8 but the recrystallized matrix that occurs instead of the cube orientation was reported as either random or weakly textured, with orientations not observed in Cu-Zn, Cu-Ge, or Cu-Sn alloys.4-9 A Cu-0.75 at. pct As alloy apparently contained, along with the (001)[100] and (113) <211> type of recrystallization components, {110} <112> and (110) <001> components, whereas an almost random distribution of orientations was found in alloys of higher arsenic content.4 A {110} <001> component also appeared in rolledand annealed Cu-Sb alloys, but otherwise the recrystallization textures of Cu-Sb alloys seem to con-

The effect of changes of atmospheric pressure on methane emissions from extensive worked-out areas of coal mines in several Midwestern States has lone caused concern to State and Federal mining departments, as well as to the operating companies involved. Common mining and ventilation methods employed in mines in these States have resulted in large sealed and unsealed worked-out areas in which considerable quantities of methane are emitted alone both intake-and return-air courses. The common practice is to watch barometric changes very closely and take special precautionary measurer during periods of low barometric pressure. Although the hazard is recognized, mining officials have different opinions concerning the effect of barometric pressure variations on the emission of mine gases. These opinions are based upon scattered personal observations, as no records exist of actual studies to establish such effects.

The thermogravimetric method was selected for investigating the evaporation of Sb2S3 in the pressure range of 50–300 Pa and in the temperature range of 823–1123 K, the gas phase diffusion was the rate-determining step for Sb2S3. The volatilization rate was related to the temperature and pressure, that the logarithm of volatilization rate yielded a line with the reciprocal of temperature and pressure. The volatilization rate for Sb 2S3 was between 0–0.023 g/C1 cm−2/C1 s. The apparent activation energy was between 65.8 and 60.6 kJ/mol.

Stresses induced by block-caving mining were estimated from in-place measurements of strain or deformation in rock and concrete around mine openings. The four types of gages used for measurements in the Climax Molybdenum mine during 1959-61 were Whittemore gage, Carlson strain meter,2 Valore strain cell, and Climax extensometer. Gage performance in the laboratory was evaluated by stressing instrumented rock and concrete specimens in a universal testing machine and by comparing measurements taken by the gages and a standard gage. Gage performance in the mine was evaluated by comparing measurements taken during an 18-month test. The Whittemore gage, Carlson strain meter, and the Climax extensometer proved suitable for the investigation; the Valore strain cell, effective in the laboratory tests, gave erratic measurements in the mine.

The flow of information, and consequently the decision-making along the chain of mining from exploration to beneficiation, typically occurs in a discontinuous fashion over long timespans. In addition, due to the uncertain nature of the knowledge about deposits and the inherent spatial distribution of material characteristics, actual production performance in terms of produced ore grades and quantity and extraction process efficiency often deviate from expectations. Reconciliation exercises to adjust mineral reserve models and planning assumptions are performed with timely lags of weeks, months or even years.With the development of modern information and communication technology over the last decade, a flood of data about different aspects of the production process is available in a real-time manner. For example, sensor technology enables online characterisation of geochemical, mineralogical and physical material characteristics on conveyor belts or at working faces. The ability to utilise this additional information and feed it back into reserve block models and planning assumptions opens up new opportunities to continuously control the decisions made in production planning to increase resource recovery and process efficiency. This leads to a change in paradigm from a discontinuous method to near real-time reserve reconciliation and model updating, which calls for suitable modelling and optimisation methodologies to quantify prior knowledge in the reserve model, process and integrate information from different sensor sources, back propagate the gain in information into reserve models and efficiently optimise operational decisions in real-time.This paper introduces the concept of an integrated closed-loop framework for real-time reserve management, incorporating sensor-based material characterisation, geostatistical modelling under uncertainty, modern data assimilation methods for sequential model updating and mining system simulation and optimisation. Studies of the f-elements under pressure provide important insights into their solid state chemistry and physics. From such studies, of the elements and their alloys, it has been established that the normally localized f- electrons of several of these elements can become, involved in bonding under pressure. The electronic behavior of f-element compounds under pressure tend to be more difficult to interpret, due to the variety and the nature of electronic orbitals that are present. The 4f-elements and some 60% of the 5f-elements have been studied under The systematic comparisons that have been established for these materials are discussed.

The performance of the versatile McNally Wedag horizontal vibratory centrifuge for dewatering ultra fine 0.5 x 0.15 mm (28 x 100 mesh) material has proven to be success¬ful and the results presented herein will examine its capabilities in terms of capacity, solids capture, product moisture, effluent solids, and size analysis. Centrifugal dewatering of fine refuse has proven t to be another application for which this unit has performed exceptionally well.
