In order to comprehend the help and information that may be expected from electrical prospecting, it is necessary to have at least a general knowledge of the methods and principles involved in preparing and interpreting results obtained in the field. Electrical prospecting is rather complicated, both in theory and practice, and in order to make a brief description clear to the practical mining man it has been necessary to idealize and generalize the problems, at the risk of having such simplification criticized by the theoretical man. This simplification must not be misinterpreted as showing a lack of theoretical knowledge. For its operation, electrical prospecting mainly depends on the fact that most metallic ores conduct an electric current much more readily than barren rocks. If an electric current flows through a block of ground within which a body of chalcopyrite is enclosed in country rock of schist, the current will find less resistance to its passage through the chalcopyrite than through the schist, even though the passage through the latter be much shorter. This is because the longer path through the chalcopyrite offers less resistance, owing to the superior electrical conductivity of the chalcopyrite (Fig. 1). The work covered in this report is a continuation of an earlier feasibility study by the Federal Bureau of Mines and points out improvements in the skull-melting method for casting reactive metals such as titanium, zirconium, and hafnium. Machined graphite molds with laminated sections can be reused many times. Large tube sections can be produced by spin casting. Graphite powder is the best expendable mold material, but binders for this use must be compounded carefully. The effects of current and furnace atmosphere on the dependent variables of the casting technique are shown. Because of developments in casting technology for titanium which eliminate the basic problems of melting and pouring the metal, opportunities for improvement in the method have increased. The mold material and gate and riser configurations require particular attention. The limits of application of the casting method have yet to be defined. New knowledge in anyone of these areas could result in marked improvements and simplifications in casting methods.

BERYLLIUM has certain properties such as low density, high hardness, good corrosion resistance, low thermal expansion and fairly good electrical conductivity, which would indicate that it, is worthy of consideration as an ingredient of light alloys. It was not until recently, however, that beryllium could be produced with sufficient ease to encourage research along this line. The production of beryllium by electrolysis from a fluoride bath has now developed to the stage where it could be used commercially if there were sufficient demand for the element. Claims made in certain newspapers and technical articles in regard to the strength and corrosion resistance of the aluminum-beryllium alloys are not justified by experimental results. Moreover, beryllium is an expensive metal ($200 a pound at the time this work was done) and, on account of the nature of its ore and the consequent difficulty of its extraction, it will in all probability continue to be a relatively expensive metal, although the cost would undoubtedly be a great deal less than $200 a pound if the metal were produced on a large scale. It seemed, therefore, that low-beryllium alloys offered the greater commercial possibilities except for very special purposes. It was partly for this reason that in the present work emphasis has been placed on beryllium alloys of low beryllium content.

The St. Joe Minerals Corporation Lead Smelter and Refinery have been in continuous operation at Herculaneum, Missouri since 1892 as the Herculaneum Lead Smelting Division. Over the years, the plant has undergone many changes to increase production, improve the technology, reduce the cost of operations, and produce the highest grade of primary lead. The latest alterations were begun in 1950 and completed in 1970 and have resulted in the Herculaneum Smelter capacity being increased to in excess of 200,000 tons per year (180,000 metric tons). This increase has made the Herculaneum Smelter the largest in the United States, and second largest in the world. This paper will describe the Herculaneum Smelter equipment, processes, and material balances. Particular emphasis will be given to the McDowell-Wellman 10' x 100' (3 x 30 meter) up-draft sinter machine and ancillaries; to the new Heavy Smelting Department (blast furnaces and drossing section); to the new Lead Refinery and its automatic casting equipment and to the gas handling system including the 340 tons per day (305 metric) Sulfuric Acid Plant utilizing a -four pass converter. The description will include photographs, flow sheets, tonnages and assays where applicable.

Al ores arriving at the works which contain more than 3% sulphur, together with all sands and other fine residues, are delivered to the roasting department. Those that are in a coarse condition are first sent to the crushing plant, consisting of 15 in. x 9 in. jaw crushers and two No. 5 Krupp mills. The ore is here crushed through a quarter mesh screen. Any pyritic concentrates high in sulphur are given a preliminary roasting, to bring the sulphur contents down to about 12 % and the roasted material is delivered to the H. H. charge-making bins. Here the various ores, sands, residues, roasted pyrites, together with about 12 % of limestone, are made up into I-ton charges in hopper trucks with bottom discharge. The trucks are elevated by hydraulic lifts to a tramway running over the roasting furnaces, and the contents are dropped into hoppers over each furnace, from whence the mixture is fed into the centre of each furnace by means of a Challenge ore-feeder.

These studies are designed to provide basic thermodynamic information of high accuracy facilitating the theoretical study of flame and combustion phenomena. This report is the third of a series3/ presenting results of the study for particular fuel-oxidant systems. The equilibrium composition of the products of combustion and the adiabatic flame temperatures of specified oxyacetylene systems have been computed.

NONFERROUS alloys upon which desirable properties can be conferred by heat treatment are becoming of increasing industrial importance. The alloys of copper with a constituent which has a solubility varying with temperature are materials of this character. Some of the constituents which are effective in producing a change in the mechanical properties of these alloys upon heat treatment are, according to Corson,1 nickel and silicon, iron and silicon, cobalt and silicon, and chromium and silicon. In addition to these elements, Gregg2 states that the combination of beryllium and silicon is effective in producing age-hardening characteristics in copper. The effect of these elements, however, as dispersion-hardening constituents in the copper alpha solid solutions does not seem to have been studied in any considerable detail. This paper deals with the heat treatment and properties of three alpha brasses containing 3 per cent. of nickel plus silicon in the proportion necessary to form the compound nickel silicide, Ni2Si. Some information of a preliminary nature in regard to the hardening by heat treatment of phosphor bronze containing the same percentages of nickel and silicon is included. The method of hardening the alloys, which is effective in increasing the tensile strength and proportional limit, is similar to that used in, the case of duralumin type aluminum alloys. It consists of a quench from a temperature at which the hardening constituent is in solid solution, followed by an aging at a lower temperature to precipitate the dissolved constituent in a dispersed condition. This results in an increased resistance of the alloy to deformation with an attendant improvement in the tensile properties.

Ice frozen from a dilute chemical solution is mechanically weaker than ice frozen from pure water. This phenomenon is the basis of a practical method for reducing the strength of a mass of frozen coal. If a chemical additive is applied to moist coal, prior to its shipment during freezing weather, the resulting frozen coal can be more easily broken than in the absence of the chemical additive. This greatly expedites the unloading and handling of coal during winter. There has been considerable research into the nature and mechanical strength of ice frozen from various solutions. The literature relating to this process has been reviewed as has the literature relating to the chemical treatment of coal and mineral particulates. Some important articles are discussed and speculations are made about the nature of the ice-weakening process. A laboratory evaluation of the effects of chemical additives on the mechanical strength of ice and frozen coal has been made. An apparatus designed for this purpose is described, and some results obtained with it are discussed.

These' limitations have led to the development of a totally new concept of screening, the Rotating Probability Screen. In order to illustrate the practical benefits to be gained by the extraction of fine materials ahead of subse quent processes particularly in the coal industry, the experiences gained in Ro-Pro installations in America, Australia, Europe and Britain are drawn upon.

THE solid nonmetallic inclusions present to some extent in all commercial steels have been variously designated. In early references they were usually called slag inclusions, and this terminology is still retained to some extent. On the premise that all nonmetallic matter produced in a metallurgical process is slag, this can be justified. We have come to think of slag, however, in a more restricted sense, and calling these particles slag inclusions is further objectionable because it fosters the erroneous concept that they are actually incorporated portions of furnace slag. Rarely is this true. The term sonims (coined from solid nonmetallic impurities) was proposed many years ago but never came into common use. In general, the term non-metallic inclusions seems to be satisfactory and adequate. NATURE AND CONS1lTUTION OF NONMETALLIC INCLUSIONS From the standpoint of origin, inclusions fall naturally into two classes: (1) those occurring as a result of reactions taking place in the body of molten or solidifying metal and (2) those resulting from mechanical incorporation of refractories or other materials with which molten steel comes in contact. The former are by far the more numerous and have been called indigenous, natural, or native inclusions. The latter are by their very nature sporadic in occurrence and have been called exogenous, accidental, adventitious, or foreign inclusions. They are often referred to as the "slag-stringer" type, though here also the material is not likely to be furnace slag. Substances Found in Inclusions. Nonmetallic inclusions are composed principally of oxides and sulfides but carbides and nitrides sometimes play an important role. In the case of indigenous inclusions the reactions by which these particles are precipitated from molten or solidifying steel may be caused by: (1) oxidation such as may occur during refining or during tapping and teeming, (2) deoxidation by added alloys, (3) change

Results from current NERDDC funded research into the geotechnology of highwall trench mining methods have clear implications for mine planners in the areas of blast design, trench shape, location of the surcharge spoil and remnant coal pillar design.Adoption of successful smooth wall blasting techniques not only removes safety hazards from the trench face, but limits development of bedding partings at the seam contacts that interrupt the smooth transition of stress across the coal seam.

Cu-As feedstocks are among the most problematic copper sources that have been avoided over the past years. The high arsenic content of such ores/concentrates combined with their refractory nature have directed the metallurgical industry towards developing efficient technologies for the treatment of high-arsenic copper ores/concentrates. As the most important member of Cu-As-S mineral system, enargite (Cu3AsS4) is frequently encountered in some of the important copper deposits. Several hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processes have been examined for the treatment of enargite concentrates, but currently, no commercial operation exists. In an effort to develop an original processing option, an acid bake-leach process has been identified and applied to an enargite concentrate containing ~67% enargite, ~27% pyrite (FeS2), ~3% chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), ~6% sphalerite (ZnS) and <1% galena (PbS). Sulfuric acid baking of this concentrate resulted in the transformation of the concentrate to S8, As2O3, HFe(SO4)2?4H2O, PbSO4 and Cu0.47Fe0.53SO4?H2O, all of which (except elemental sulfur and PbSO4) dissolved during the water leaching step. More than 87% Cu and 64% As were leached when the concentrate was baked at 200°C over 7 h with a sulfuric acid to concentrate weight ratio of 1.6. Less than 1% As was lost to the gas phase. Upon water leaching, copper and arsenic were released to the solution at a concentration ratio of about 3:1. While enargite is very reactive during the sulfuric acid baking reaction, other minerals present in the concentrate such as pyrite, galena, and sphalerite may compete to consume sulfuric acid and be converted into their corresponding sulfates at different levels. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate phase transformations during the acid bake-leach process for the treatment of an enargite concentrate, and to study the effect of sulfuric acid dosage on the extraction of Cu, Fe, and As. In this regard, the concentrate, baked concentrate, and the leach residues are characterized and a conceptual process flowsheet is described for the acid bake-leach process for the treatment of enargite concentrates.

Carbon number distributions were obtained for tar acid fractions from five low-temperature tars by low-ionizing voltage mass spectrometry. Quantitative data for phenols representing seven structural compound types were examined by statistical analysis. It was shown that for the phenols discussed, the data could be represented by regression equations expressing phenolic concentration as a function of the reciprocal of the carbon number and the carbon-to-hydrogen ratio of the parent coal. The total concentration of each structural type present was found to depend on the molecular weight and boiling point of the initial member of the group. Carbon distribution data for the tar acid fractions studied support the view that low-temperature tars contain the same chemical compounds but in different proportions.

MINERALS used primarily for personal adornment and decorative purposes are called precious stones. To be so prized, the stones must possess beauty of color, must not be too common, and must be hard enough to withstand ordinary wear. If transparent, they must have brilliancy and fire. Almost one hundred minerals have been used as precious stones, the noble gems being the diamond, emerald, ruby, and sapphire; pearls are frequently included by courtesy. These gem stones, however, are sometimes equaled in beauty by fine opals, aquamarines, ourmalines, spinels, chrysoberyls (both cat&apos;s-eye and alexandrite), and spodumenes (hiddenite and kunzite). The Greeks, Romans, and medieval Europeans grouped together gem stones according to color and degree of transparency, and only as the niceties of mineralogy began to be known, about a century ago, was it realized how many different minerals have the beauty required of gem stones. Pliny, for example, did not distinguish between rubies and the red varieties of spinel and garnet, although he conjectured that the beryl and emerald were one mineral. GENERAL SURVEY Early man treasured bright colored berries, attractive shells, white teeth of wild animals and brightly colored pebbles, and used them as personal ornaments. In the eastern hemisphere, the earliest stones used were members of the quartz family (100,000 to 75,000 B.C.); then obsidian and amber (50,000 to 25,000 B.C.); the jade minerals, fluorspar and jet (22,000 to 7000 B.C.); turquoise (7000 to 3400 B.C.); lapis lazuli and garnet (prior to 3500 B.C.) ; emerald (2000 to 1800 B.C.) ; sapphire, ruby and diamond (800 to 500 B.C.). Indeed, gem mining is the oldest form of mining, and before any metals were known primitive man recognized about 18 gems and decorative stones. At first he sought them in stream gravels and residual deposits but by 3400 B.C. the turquoise mines of the Sinai Peninsula were operated. ADEQUATE treatment of the difficulties surrounding the valuation of mineral lands requires that agreement be first reached defining value as understood for the purpose of appraisal. To define value as the price of a product is not sufficient, and does not assist us in using the factors that cause variations in values and in relative values. The real value of any product depends primarily upon its relation to the necessities, comforts and pleasures of mankind. As the necessities, comforts and pleasures of the civilized races differ from those of more primitive man, the value of products varies with the degree of civilization and the environment of the consumer. Coal has no value to the savages of warm climates, and arrow-head flint none to the residents of New York. It has long been recognized that what has been termed ? intrinsic value " must be limited to materials that are essential to existence-air, water, food. But "intrinsic value" cannot be measured in monetary terms. The intrinsic value of a bushel of wheat is due to the fact that it will support the life of an individual for a certain definite time, but this fact does not enable us to measure or to express that value in monetary terms. It has often been proposed to adopt as a measure of the value of any product the quantity of labor necessary to produce it, but this method is of limited application, and will not apply to what may be termed "intrinsic values." For many reasons it might be well, while assenting to the fact that any material may he intrinsically valuable, to abandon the use of the term " intrinsic value." One of these reasons is the tendency to confuse the idea of intrinsic value with a value that is conferred by economic conditions, that is purely artificial and that may be permanent or evanescent; Intrinsic value must from its nature be permanent and unchangeable.

INTRODUCTION The mines of western central Mexico historically contributed a profusion of gold and silver for the treasury of Spain and later provided sources for financing the Mexican War for Independence and the Mexican Revolution. The western coastal and barranca (cliff) tribes were hunters and extremely hostile, and the Spaniards were not able to penetrate many of the rich districts of their rugged homeland until the mid-1700&apos;s. This was more than 200 years after Cortez began the Inquisition by defeating the Aztecs and their allies in a decisive battle in the great city of Tenochtitlan (present day Mexico City). The Spaniards had a voracious appetite for silver and gold, and it was inevitable that they would finally subdue the natives and commence mining activities. Described in this paper are some of the precious metal mining activities in the southern half of the State of Sinaloa and the western half of the State of Durango (Figure l), and specifically those mining activities in the area controlled by the company with which the author was associated for 14 years, Minas de San Luis, S. Small batches of fluorspar flotation concentrates were made into nodules and pellets on a laboratory scale. Several of these were rated acceptable by laboratory evaluation methods. The most satisfactory pellets were produced by mixing fluorspar with about 12.5 percent of water, by weight, and 4 percent of organic binders. These binders) for the most part) originated from petroleum and wood-pulp industries. They were generally difficult to handle and were not easily incorporated with the fluorspars tested. Most of them seemed to have an aversion for damp fluorspar and had to be forcibly mixed with the fluorspar; which was then formed into pellets by pressure. Substitution of fuel oil in varying amounts in the binders enhanced the mixing and penetrating qualities of these binders but at the same tire tended to make the pellets more porous. Tall oils performed the same function to a lesser degree and usually decreased the water absorbency of the finished pellets. Heat-treating temperatures to set up these binders were moderate -about 5000 F. for 30 to 50 minutes was usually enough for both drying and heat treating. Nodules made with 1-1/2 to 2 percent of bentonite as a binder were easily mixed and formed. They required a high degree of heat (about 1,500° F.) to develop their strength and were quite water-absorbent when finished. Two fluorspars were examined for weight and fluorite loss after heat treatment at similar temperatures. Both showed a definite wej.ght and analytical loss of fluorite. Bentonite was used also as a binder to successfully nodulize finely ground oxides of iron, manganese, and nickel.
