Newton's method of solving a nonlinear equation is employed to develop a least-squares acoustic emission source location method in which the spatial residuals of the location equations are minimized. These residuals, related to the distances from the least-squares source location perpendicular to the surfaces described by the location equations, permit location error to be estimated to first order along the spatial axes. The solutions obtained by this method are the best spatial solutions to the location equations in the least-squares sense. Also presented is a procedure by which the geometrical control of a transducer array can be evaluated using the rate of change of source location with fractional velocity change.

Results of investigations over approximately the last 10 years by the Bureau of Mines and others on technology for recovering cell-grade alumina from domestic nonbauxitic resources such as clay, anorthosite, alunite, dawsonitic oil shale, coal ash, and coal shale are reviewed. It is concluded that, although many innovative techniques have evolved from this effort and have been shown to be technically feasible, energy and economic considerations will prevent any of the processes from competing with the Bayer process under normal conditions. Based on the Bureau's experience, some variation of clay-HCI leaching, HC1 gas sparging crystallization has the greatest potential as an alternative to the Bayer-bauxite process.

Henry Walker Eltin (HWE) are the mining contractors for Gloucester Coal at Stratford mine, which is in an environmentally sensitive area in the Avon Valley, NSW, Australia. Normal blasting at Stratford is done in a æstand upÆ or æbox cutÆ mode to suit the truck and shovel operations. Recently an opportunity of doing a throw blast became available when part of a ramp had to be blasted to accommodate changes to the pit design while not damaging the remainder of the ramp. The objective was to maximise throw into the void in order to minimise excavation costs by reducing the amount of overburden to be moved by the excavation fleet. It was necessary that the best result be achieved while staying within the vibration and airblast limits at a neighbouring property and nearby township. Both objectives were achieved through the application of OricaÆs knowledge of blast design, modelling and i-konTM electronic detonators. The i-kon system was used because of its known benefits in cast blasting and environmental control. The i-kon system provides the blaster with much greater accuracy, control and the flexibility to tailor blast designs. It has been found previously to enhance blast throw and provide cleaner high walls (Brent, 2002). The blast was a success, producing a muckpile with a high degree of looseness and consistent fragmentation, with an average throw to final spoil position of 37.5 per cent. This was achieved without any environmental exceedance. In addition, high speed filming showed that the coal edge had remained largely in place, indicating minimal coal loss. The results exceeded the expectations of HWE Stratford and the overall cost savings to HWE Stratford from this blast were recognised to be substantial. Further throw blasting opportunities at Stratford have been followed using the i-kon system to maximise benefits.

John D. Price (Colorado Fuel and Iron Corp., Pueblo, Colo)—The paper on the coal fields of the Oaxaca district as prepared by engineers Toron and Cortes-Obregon of the staff of the Bank of Mexico bears witness to the thorough and careful way in which the men associated with this organization perform their work. There is little to be added to their paper in way of discussion other than to confirm and amplify some of their statements. Since the only extensive and well-developed field of coking coal lies in the northeastern section of the country adjacent to Sabinas in the state of Coahuila, it follows that blast furnace plants would be located in that same region. Two such plants are now operating at Monterrey and Monclova, using coke produced at the Sabinas district mines. But the nearer of these two plants is 600 miles from Mexico City and even farther from the center of population. Transportation of products from these mills to the market area is therefore expensive, both because of the distance and the difficulty of the terrain over which it must be carried. The development of an integrated steel industry closer to the center of population has therefore long been a goal toward which the Mexican technicians have been striving. While the presence of coal of some grade has been reported in many of the states, and many ideas have been advanced regarding its possible uses in iron and steel production, deposits of anthracite in Sonora and the various coals of the Oaxaca district as reported on in this paper are the only ones that have been explored in a serious manner. The coking coal from the Mix-tepec zone appears to offer promise of producing a coke which could be used in a standard blast furnace. Several problems are indicated, however: 1—The ash in the coal is high as mined, but indications are that it can be washed to an ash content of 15 pct with a recovery of 70 pct of washed coal. 2—Such washing would increase the volatile content from 17.4 pct to about 20 pct, and in a byproduct oven this should give a coke yield of close to 80 pct with an ash content of coke under 20 pct. 3—A free swelling index of 5 appears low for a good coking coal, and below that of the coals from the Sabinas district, which show between 6 and 9. But washing of the coal should result in an improvement in this regard; in the United States coals from Utah with an index even lower than 5 have made a usable coke. 4—A coal with volatile as low as 17.4 in raw coal and 20 in washed coal would come close to being classed as a low-volatile rather than medium-volatile coal, and low-volatile coals are notorious for their high expansion properties. Several plants in the United States are making coke from straight medium-volatile coal of 26 to 28 volatile content, and one at Rosita,, Mexico, from coal of 25 volatile. But no plants to my knowledge are using coal as low as 20 volatile. Since the Rosita coal appears to be a borderline coal from the angle of its expansion properties the coking of one of the straight lower volatile must be approached with caution. 5—There are few coals possessing any degree of coking properties which cannot be used in coke production by careful attention to its preparation and blending. The fact that coals of other types are available in this same region make improvement through blending very possible. 6—There are other workable methods of reducing iron ore other than the conventional coke-blast-furnace method. These will not be discussed here but it is known that their use has been considered. The technicians of not only Mexico but also of the other Latin American countries are keenly aware of their natural resources and their national needs. This paper emphasizes the fact that the Mexican technicians are working on their problem and attempting to speed the day of self-sufficiency for their country. Salvatore Cortes-Obregon (author's reply)—I wish to thank Mr. Price for his kind remarks. The Mixtepec coal as shown in Table II has 30 pct ash and a free swelling index of 5, but when the same coal is washed to 15 pct ash it has a free swelling index of 8 to 9 and the volatiles increased from 17.4 to 20.7 pct. A satisfactory coke has been produced from blends made in the Mexican laboratory using at least 40 pct of the Mixtepec coking coals with the other Oaxaca non-coking coals. Koppers in Germany report good coke obtained from the Oaxaca coal with a blend of 80 pct Mixtepec coal. Consideration is being given the possibility of using methods other than the conventional blast furnace for the reduction of iron ore near the Oaxaca area; electric furnaces appear promising. The non-coking coals could be used to produce cheap electric energy and the coking coals to make metallurgical coke.

To improve the pumping capacity and engineering efficiency of fresh thickened tailings slurry, a high charge density superplasticizer was developed to improve the rheological properties of tailings slurry. The effects of superplasticizer content, the concentration and fineness of tailings, the proportion and type of cementitious materials, temperature, and hydration time on the rheological properties of unclassified tailings slurry and backfill materials were studied. The variation characteristics of the slurry yield stress, plastic viscosity, and thixotropy with different factors were measured by a Brookfield R/S-SST plus rheometer. The experimental results of fresh thickened tailings illustrated that the higher the concentration of the slurry and the finer the tailings, the worse the rheological properties of the slurry. The results of cemented paste backfill materials indicated that the rheological parameters increased as binder content and time increased. The rheological parameters decreased as the temperature increased. The addition of a superplasticizer reduced the rheological parameters and improved the rheological behavior of the fresh thickened tailings and cemented paste backfill materials, which was beneficial to the slurry’s pipeline transportation. This paper can provide technical guidance for slurry transportation in the backfill system and provide a reference for designing the superplasticizer used in tailings.

The rest potentials of molybdenite electrodes are measured as a function of pH in absence and presence of flotation reagents. The chemicals used include sodium ethyl xanthate, kerosene, dextrin,sodium hydrosulfide, hydrated sodium molybdate, sodium sulfate, and hydrated sodium thiosulfate. The effect of dissolved oxygen is also noted. The obtained data are correlated with the results of micro-flotation tests obtained under similar chemical conditions.

Ion exchange using resins is one of the few processes capable of reducing ionic contaminants in effluents to very low levels. Continuous fluidized-bed ion exchange is an advantageous technique for processing dirty effluents and thin slurries. It also reduces resin inventory and equipment cost compared to fixed packed beds. A simple continuous fluidized-bed unit has been investigated for treating effluents and its performance is described. Breakthrough curves were first obtained from static fluidized fixed beds; these data were then used to determine the required operating conditions for a periodic-flow, countercurrent fluidized-bed ion exchange system. A waste stream, containing about 56 ppm copper, was treated in the continuous system using an extraction fluidized bed depth of 203 cm and a flow rate of 1.22 cm3/ cm2s (900 gph / sq.ft) to yield an effluent containing less than 0.02 ppm copper. A generalized design method is proposed for similar chemical systems.

"INTRODUCTION Limestone (which consists essentially of calcium carbonate) and dolomite (calcium magnesium carbonate) occur widely in the United States. Their presence is of vast economic importance, because they are used much more extensively than any other form of rock. In 1945, limestone (which, broadly, includes dolomite) was quarried in every State except Delaware, New Hampshire, North Dakota, and Rhode Island, and also in Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Total production (including that used in cement and lime manufacture) exceeded 151,700,000 tons, or 79 percent of the quantity of all kinds of stone sold or used during that year.Important well-known uses of limestone are as concrete aggregate, road material, railroad ballast, for liming the land, for cement manufacture, as riprap for shore protection, harbor work, and spillways at dams, and as building stone.. None of these uses, however, are considered herein. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the industrial and chemical uses that are less widely known and yet are of tremendous importance in a great variety of processing industries. Important examples are dolomite as a refractory furnace lining and limestone as a fluxing agent in blast furnaces, and as a raw material employed in sugar, paper, glass, and alkali manufacture.PRIOR REPORTIn May 1941, the Bureau issued a report 4/ that described these uses in some detail. As new and important developments have taken place during the ensuing years, a revision and representation of the salient features of these uses seem desirable. Asphalt filler and mineral wool uses included in the earlier report are omitted from this paper because they are identified more closely with the highway and building industries, respectively, than with the industrial applications."

The interface morphology of the Mg-32 wt pct A1 eutectic has been studied in terms of the freezing rate, the temperature gradient, and the impurity content. For the impure eutectic it has been found that for a given temperature gradient a fast freezing rate favors the formation of a cellular intwface with sub-grain strucfure. This cellular interface can be changed to a planar interface of the same substructure either by decreasing the freezing rate or by increasing the temperature gradient. For the eutectic of highest purity, as purified by zme-refining, no cellular interface was found for any growth condition and only a planar interface with subgrain structure was observed. Furthermore, a layer of liquid adhering to the interface during de-cantation freezes with shapes and sizes of the phase particles different from those in the main eutectic solid. WHEN a molten metal or a binary eutectic liquid with zero freezing range is solidified unidirec-tionally, a cellular interface is usually formed-3 This interface is schematically represented by Fig. 1. The profile of the solid-liquid interface has a corrugated shape, as shown in Fig. l(a), while the decanted interface consists of cells, as shown in Fig. l(b). The cell boundary in a frozen eutectic is distinguishable from the cell interior by changes in particle shapes, as shown in Fig. 4. The formation of a cellular interface, according to Weart and ack,' is attributed to a layer of constitutionally supercooled" liquid generated at the advancing interface by the simultaneous rejection of an impurity by the two phases of the eutectic mixture, which then permits freezing over an appreciable temperature range. This concept has been further elaborated by Tiller, who predicts that even in the absence of an impurity the rejection of solute ahead of each lamella of the eutectic may promote the formation of a cellular interface. The measurement of raceway temperature in the blast furnace is a critical issue, which is very significant for judgment of, prediction and diagnosis of the racewa yburning state. This paper deals with mathematical models by Monte Carlo method to approximately simulate the radiation heat transfer in the race-way and establish matrix equations using CCD cameras, which are solved to obtain the three-dimensional temperature field. Due to the existence of fluctuation error, CCD camera measurement error and others,this is analyzed and random error is added in the measurement data to demonstrate the effectiveness and stability of the reconstructed temperature field. The results show that the reconstructed three-dimensional temperature field of the raceway is very close to the exact temperature.

Around 35 Mt of industrial clays were produced in 1994 under the broad classifications kaolin (25 Mt), bentonite (8 Mt) and attapulgite/sepiolite (2 Mt). A brief review of world sources and markets is given as background to Australia's small production (0.5 Mt) but developing interest in industrial clays. Clay markets have changed significantly over the past 30 years resulting initially in consolidation and expanded production from traditional high-grade clay sources but also creating opportunities for development of new discoveries. Decline in the use of clay-based refractories has come at a time of strong growth in demand for refined kaolin for the paper industry. Traditional markets for bentonite as oil drilling muds, iron ore pelletising and foundry bond sands are mature and in overall decline. Today, bentonite has a significant share of the growth market in pet litter which a few years ago was dominated by attapulgite/sepiolite clays. Both bentonite and attapulgite/sepiolite have good prospects for increased demand in environmental markets both in containment of hazardous wastes and sorption of toxic substances. In common with all industrial minerals, markets for clay minerals will demand continuous improvement in product quality and consistency. Development of new and improved products will be increasingly the responsibility of the raw material supplier. In order to remain competitive, this will require a substantial commitment to quality assurance and research and development. Increase in market share will come for those producers able to translate developments in their products to cost savings or increased competitiveness for the industries that they Supply.

"El propósito del siguiente estudio es mostrar el análisis comparativo de los reactivos de flotación de las distintas nacionalidades (americana, alemán, japonés)-en tanto herramienta de conocimiento y difusión- para el manejo de plantas metalúrgicas del país. Los factores a considerar en dicho estudio fueron: igualdad en factor molienda, densidad de pulpa, pH en el circuito, tiempo de flotación y prueba de paladas. Los reactivos utlizados son Xantato(Z-3), Xantato,(Z-4), Xantato(Z-5),Aeroflat 15, Aeroflat 25 y aceite de pino,respectivamente. Concluyendo que de cada reactivo estudiado, se compara su calidad como promotor y factor precio. Así para el XANTATO Z-3, el Xantato americano y alemán son de calidad semejante, con la variante que el alemán es un 22% más económico en su precio de compra. En cuanto al xantato japonés es de menor fuerza que los anteriores, siendo su precio más o menos igual al alemán. En el XANTATO Z-4, el xantato americano es de mejor calidad que los otros dos, aunque estos son también un 22% más económicos. Para el XANTATO Z-5, no hay casi diferencia entre el xantato alemán y el americano en cuanto a su calidad como promotor. El precio del xantato alemán es un 30% menor que el americano. En cuanto al xantato japonés es de menor fuerza que los anteriores, siendo su precio mayor que el xantato alemán. En el AEROFLOAT 15, es evidente que el aerofloat americano es mejor en calidad como promotor que los otros dos y su precio es casi similar al alemán. El japonés es inferior en calidad y su precio es similar a los otros. De otro lado, en el AEROFLOAT 25, el Aerofloat alemán da mejores resultados para esta flotación de cobre oxidado, donde su precio es similar al norteamericano. El japonés es inferior en calidad y su precio es también similar a los otros. Finalmente en el Aceite de pino, es indiscutible que el americano sea de mejor calidad que el alemán y japonés, sin diferencias destacables."

"This research determines shear strength and stiffness properties of bedding planes and joints in the roof strata rocks within 7.5 to 9 m (25-30 ft.) overlying the Illinois #6 coal seam (within the pressure arch zone). A shear test loading device was designed into a 1.334 kN (150 t) Forney Compression Loading Machine to perform direct shear tests in accordance with ASTM D5607-08 “Standard Test Method for Performing Laboratory Direct Shear Strength Tests of Rock Specimens under Constant Normal Force”. The data were used to determine peak and residual friction angles and the dilation angle. A total of 49 bedding plane samples were tested, out of which 46 (36 intact and 10 relatively weak and loose) samples passed QA/QC procedures in accordance to ASTM D5607. Samples from eight (8) different bedding planes- shale/limestone (SL), shale/sandstone (SSs), shale/bone (SB), laminated sandstone (LS), shale/shale (SS), bone/bone (BB), bone/limestone (BL), and limestone/limestone (LL) were tested. The number of samples tested for each bedding plane were: SL- 11, SSs- 8, SB- 5, BB- 4, LS- 6, SS- 9, BL- 1, and LL- 2. Peak and residual shear strength values at 2.75 MPa normal stress range 1.06 – 6.26 MPa and 0.82 MPa to 0.82 – 4.14 MPa, respectively. The average normal and shear stiffness values are about 11.98 GPa/m and 3.11 GPa/m. Dilation angles are low (<10?) and negative in some cases. Angle of sliding friction values range from 9? to 42?. Joint Roughness Coefficient (JRC) values were less than 10.INTRODUCTIONRock mass may be defined as the total in situ rock medium containing bedding planes, faults, joints, folds and other structural features. Therefore, it is discontinuous and may have heterogeneous and anisotropic engineering properties. Upon creation of an excavation in a rock mass, bedding planes and joints are the most likely points of failure initiation. The failure typically occurs either in tensile or shear mode. Upon failure initiation stresses are transferred to the neighboring rock mass and the failure progresses until stability is achieved through equilibrium of stresses and strength. An example of this mechanism is development of the pressure arch. This study determined the shear strength and stiffness properties in shear and compression of bedding planes and joints in the immediate roof strata rocks within 7.5-9 m ( 25-30 ft.) overlying the Illinois No. 6 coal seam (within the pressure arch zone). Since such data are currently not available for Illinois Coal Basin mines, researchers and engineers have been using estimated values for design purposes. The immediate roof lithology in the proposed mining area consists of shale 0.62 m; Bone 0.09 m (0.3 ft.); Limestone, 0.10 m (0.33 ft.); Shale 2.37 m (7.9 ft.); and sandstone 0.55 m (1.83 ft.). The bedding plane samples were provided by a mine in south-eastern Illinois operating at a depth of about 180 m (600 ft.)."

PRIOR to World War II, approximately 500 tons per day, or one-third of the ore being shipped to the Golden Cycle Mill at Colorado Springs, Colo., from the Cripple Creek district, was being treated in the flotation plant. The remaining 1000 tons, along with the flotation concentrates, received the usual roasting and cyanide treatment. Since it was not possible to make a disposable tailing on the general run of Cripple Creek ores by flotation alone, it was necessary to treat the flotation tailings by cyanidation, along with the roasted ore. By this treatment, an overall economical tailing could be made. The gold ores from the Cripple Creek district are the highly siliceous sulphotellurides with approximately 3 pct total sulphides. In the lower grade ores most of the values are found in very finely disseminated pyrite. In some of the higher grade ores the tellurides, calaverite and sylvanite, can be recognized. After several years of floating Cripple Creek gold ores, having a very low mineral content, it was concluded that this type of ore required a Type of flotation machine that would give a rather violent aeration and agitation. This action produced a fairly deep froth column which contained not only the free mineral, principally pyrite, but also most of the middling product; this was most essential in producing a low grade tailing by flotation alone that could be discarded to waste. After investigating most of the current types of flotation machines, it was decided to convert to the Fagergren type. During World War II, the flotation plant was modified to handle lead and zinc ores. The treatment of these ores was carried on until April 1946. At this time the flotation plant was again reconverted to handle the Cripple Creek ores. SELECTING ORES FOR FLOTATION During the period of reconversion a considerable amount of experimental work was carried on in the laboratory to determine if a disposable tailing could be made by flotation alone, on certain selected ores from the Cripple Creek district. It was found that most of the dump ores and a few of the low grade mine ores could be treated by this method with very satisfactory results. After the preliminary test work in the laboratory, it was decided to carry on further work on a plant-size scale to see if similar results could be obtained. On April 15, 1946, a part of the plant was put into operation as a pilot plant. The various ores that had been found suitable for treatment by this method in the laboratory, were run through the pilot plant at the rate of 200 tons per day for a period of several months. Results were so encouraging that it was decided to put the plant in full-scale operation. Since that time plant capacity has been increased from 500 to 1000 tons per day. The current interest in sulfur recovery from coal measures is indicated by a recent report prepared for the Public Health Service (1) It was noted that the concentration of pyrites to a product containing 42-48 percent sulfur should be relatively easy with present equipment. It was also pointed out that a utility potential exists for the high-grade iron concentrate which results as a by-product of the consumption of pyrites in the acid-making process. However, economics, marketing characteristics, location, transportation, pyrite levels and coal characteristics all strongly influence the feasibility of fostering industrial development of such processes. The extent of pyrite recovery and product quality is intimately related to pyrite particle size and its degree of liberation, a consideration usually given greater emphasis in metal ore preparation than in processing coals. Consequently, fine crushing to nearly 20 mesh probably will be essential for maximum practical processing. It appears that any process separating pyrites from a coal must involve a reprocessing of the normal preparation plant refuse, although some yields can be attained from certain existing operations as products from, a shaking table or a jig. Further, the existence of millions of tons of coal refuse cannot be ignored as a mined source of raw materials. The recovery of saleable products from such wastes, although untried on a large scale under current conditions, not only offers a realistic source of sulfur but also would achieve a secondary refuse with the minimal contents of substances which incite and propagate the burning of organic and inorganic combustibles. These silicate materials, thus beneficiated, also offer some potential for economic utilization. Some significant tonnages of pyrites have been produced from coal measures in the past, but the experience was, in general, not consistent with current coal preparation practice. The processes involved did not include cyclones and heavy media; nor were they carries out under the sociological environment concerned with pollution as exists today.

THE crystallographic mechanism for the austenite-to-martensite transformation has been deduced from the results of the following new experimental determinations: (I) the accurate evaluation of the lattice relationship between austenite and individual crystals of martensite-and thus the relationship between the martensite lattice and the martensite plate, and (2) the measurement and analysis of the change in positions that a volume of austenite undergoes when it transforms into a crystal of martensite. For the latter study, a new tool was developed, the stereographic analysis of shear. Lattice relationship.-Thirty-five separate 50-gram melts of an alloy containing about 22 per cent nickel and 0.8 per cent carbon were prepared in a high-vacuum furnace. This alloy is all-austenite at room temperature; grain size was about I cm. Specimens of the alloy were cooled to about -70°C. to form a few martensite crystals, and suitable specimens were ground and polished on a surface parallel to a single martensite plate, exposing the martensite crystal for an area of I mm. or more. Four martensite cystals from four different ingots were prepared in this manner; the largest crystal of this group is illustrated in Fig. I. Back-reflection Lane patterns were obtained from martensite [ ] crystals (and the matrix austenite) both before and after tempering. The locations of the basal-plane pole of martensite was checked by means of oscillating crystal X-ray patterns. All four crystals studied yielded the same solution (±0.5°), and these relationships are expressed in gnomonic projection in Fig. 3.* The narrow dark-etching bands often visible in martensite "needles" were found to be parallel to {112} and thus are undoubtedly twin bands in the martensite crystal.

Part Two of this report is based upon six working memoranda prepared during the first half of 1972 at an early stage in our work for the Bureau of Mines. This work presents preliminary performance estimates of baseband voice and narrowband through-the-earth electromagnetic communications systems of principal interest to the Bureau for operational/ emergency mine communications applications. The calculations were prepared to obtain early indications of the feasibility and governing parameters of such communications systems. They are based on limited, but pertinent, coal mine electromagnetic noise data acquired to-date by Bureau of Mines contractors; on theoretical signal-attenuation characteristics for two transmitter antenna types of present interest to the Bureau and on semi-empirical models which describe the intelligibility of voice communications as a function of the frequency variations of the signal-to-noise ratio across the voiceband. This work examines the cases of baseband voice and narrowband communications for uplink and downlink transmissions, for frequencies up to 3kHz. Downlink transmissions are via a horizontal wire antenna, and uplink transmissions via a vertical-axis loop antenna, for typical mine depths of 300, 600, and 1000 feet. Representative coal-mine overburden conductivities of 10-2 mhos/meter (moderate and common) and 10-1 mhos/ meter (high) were used; the former figure for both voice and narrowband calculations and the latter for narrowband calculations only. Examples of high, moderate, and low, surface and subsurface, harmonic and broadband-impulsive noise conditions were taken from NBS and Westinghouse (WGL) mine noise data, together with examples of high- and low-levels of ELF atmospheric noise taken from M.I.T. Lincoln Laboratory data. The effects of simple voice spectrum shaping techniques on the intelligibility of through-the-earth voice communications are examined, and indexes of intelligibility more broadly based than signal-to-noise ratio are discussed. Finally, a means of overcoming the affects of 60 Hz noise and its harmonics which are the largest contributors to typical audio frequency in-mine noise, is suggested. These feasibility calculations are not intended to serve as definitive and complete treatments, but as a starting point: to establish first-order estimates of the magnitude and variability of transmitter power requirements under different noise, overburden conductivity, and mine depth conditions; to identify relationships, conditions, or frequencies that are likely to limit or enhance system performance; to reveal items requiring further investigation and data still required; and to suggest practical methods for optimizing system performance. These objectives were met by the calculations. Simple experiments to support these calculations can and should be carried out; together with more detailed investigations of specific modulation, coding, noise-suppression, voice-compression and signal-conditioning techniques, aimed at producing through-the-earth operational/emergency mine-communication systems that are not only effective, but practical and economically sound.

The Federal Bureau of Mines, as part of a program to insure future raw material needs for the iron and steel industry, undertook research to beneficiate the oxidized taconites from the western Mesabi range in Minnesota. The data presented were obtained by applying the Bureau-developed selective-flocculation/cationic-flotation process to the second of three oxidized taconite samples. These three samples are representative of an estimated 10 billion tons of ore analyzing 30 to 40 pct iron. The experimental work was performed in a 900-lb/hr pilot plant. Treating the ore sample (36.1 pct Fe) with the Bureau&apos;s process produced commercially acceptable concentrates averaging 63.5 pct Fe and 4.3 pct SiO2, with an average iron recovery of 84.6 pct.
