The capacity calculation of complex transportation systems involving variable activity times such as encountered in the mining industry are often worked out by means of simulation, which reconstructs waiting times and cycle times. The queuing theory, which mathematically calculates waiting times, has been used mainly to describe the, phenomena. This is due partly to the difficulties encountered in modelling complex systems and partly to the difficulty of reconciling the required time distribution laws with the real phenomena by means of the queuing theory. It is, however, obvious that formulas for capacity calculations would be preferable to simulation procedures because of their higher calculation speed, shorter and more flexible programs and shorter programming work. The calculation procedure presented in this paper is composed of some rather simple models, which are based on the queuing theory, and on some probabilistic and some deterministic considerations. The models are supported by observations, and to some extent by simulations. It has been attempted to find all the components of the cycle time and to include them in a comprehensive model. It is the intention to demonstrate that even quite complex mine transportation systems can be treated by means of the queuing theory with the advantages mentionned above and, without sacrificing the precision of the estimates. The speed of calculation of a wide range of parameter combinations is such that the procedure can be used extensively by a project engineer in the search for optimal modifications of the entire transportation system.

"There is a considerable need for standardized respirable dusts with consistent, reproducible characteristics which simulate those of actual mine dust. The availability of such materials should be a significant factor in promoting coordinated research into dust characterization and mine monitoring, dust control, and the biomedical aspects of dust toxicology. The use of an opposed-jet, fluid-energy grinding system in closed circuit with a cross-flow, centrifugal air classifier for preparing bulk quantities of respirable-size dust has been investigated, and appropriate, standardized procedures have been established. By stage-crushing, screening, and fine-grinding with a Donaldson Acucut classifier/mini-grinder system, it is possible to produce bulk quantities of respirable dust at relatively high rates. Using minor modifications to the system, broader or narrower size distributions can be prepared within the respirable range. The system has been shown to reach steady-state with respect to product size distribution very rapidly. However, preferential grinding/classification effects appear to lead to a slow build-up of mineral matter in the circulating load with a corresponding slow change in product composition with time. In those applications where the dust composition is required to match that of the feed coal, it may be necessary to allow considerable time for a true steady-state to be established.Standard respirable dust samples have been prepared from coals representing the western (high volitile A bituminous), central (medium volatile bituminous) and eastern (anthracite) mining areas of Pennsylvania. Quartz and kaolin clay samples, representing important mineral constituents of coal dust have also been prepared. Extensive characterization studies have been performed on the samples to evaluate chemical and mineralogical composition and the distributions of particle size and specific gravity. Detailed information on the original coals is available from the Penn State Coal Data Base. The standard coal dust samples appear to simulate actual mine dust very well with respect to particle size and shape, but generally have somewhat lower ash content. Samples of these standard dusts have been made available to research groups concerned with respirable dust in mines."

The rapidly growing demand for titanium pigments has aroused new interest in actual and potential sources of supply of titanium- bearing ores , which only a comparatively few years ago were almost unmarketable . This paper , which supplements a general circular entitled " Titanium" ( Information Circular 6365 ) , represents a summary of current trade literature and Government reports , together with some hitherto unpublished material that has accumulated in the files of the Bureau of Mines . The purpose of this pamphlet is simply to indicate the commercial possibilities of the deposits , and the discussion is confined almost entirely to the three commercial ores , ilmenite , rutile , and magnetite ( titaniferous iron ore ) .

The solubilities of nitrogen in liquid iron and liquid Fe-Ni, Fe-Mo, Fe-V, and Fe-Mo-V alloys were measured by the Sieverts method. Measurements were made at 1600° to 1800°C on binary alloys up to 20 pet Ni, 10 pet V, 10 pet Mo; and on ternary alloys containing 0 to 3 pet V with 0 to 5 pet Mo. The results on liquid iron confirm that Sieverts' law is obeyed in the range 50 to 750 mm pressure. The measured solubilities and their temperature coefficients are in general agreement with other modern authors. The logarithms of the activity coefficients of nitrogen in the binaries are approximately linear functions of the pet of alloying element. A method suggested by Wagner, Chipman, and others for predicting gas solubilities in complex alloys from solubility data on binaries was applied to the Fe-Mo-V alloys. Reasonably good agreement was obtained between calculated and experimental solubilities. NITROGEN'S solubility in liquid iron has been studied by a number of investigators. It is reasonably well established that the solubility of nitrogen follows Sieverts' law at least up to 1 atm partial pressure and that the solubility increases gradually with temperature. The solubility of nitrogen in Fe-X binary liquid systems has been investigated in only a few cases. Only the systems Fe-Cr,3-5, 7 Fe-V,3 Fe-Mn,3, 5 Fe-Ni,3, 5 Fe-Si,B, H Fe-C, L, H and Fe-P4 appear to have received any study. The only work on liquid Fe-V was done by Brick and Creevy.3 This was limited to 13.5 pet and 26.5 pet V, but no exact temperatures were recorded. No work whatsoever appears to have been done on liquid Fe-Mo alloys and even work on Fe-Ni alloys is rather scant. The work on liquid ternary systems is still more limited, and the only publication available appears to be that of Wentrup and Reif,7 who studied the Fe-Cr-Mn and Fe-Cr-Ni alloys. Rassbach, Saunders, and Harbrecht17 have reported work on the solubility of nitrogen in stainless steel but this was not a systematic study of any particular system. Commercial alloys usually contain several alloying elements. Thus, it often becomes important to be able to predict the nitrogen solubility in systems containing two or more added elements without the necessity of making measurements. Wagner,14 Chipman," Darken and Gurry," and Morris and Buehl 14 have suggested means by which this may be accomplished, and Langenberg14 has recently applied one of these methods to nitrogen solubility in complex liquid alloys. This paper reports the results of nitrogen solubility determinations on Fe-Ni, Fe-Mo, Fe-V, and Fe-Mo-V alloys and compares calculated and experimental solubilities in the ternary alloy. Attempted measurements on Fe-Cr alloys were not successful by the experimental method employed. Experimental Method The general method of solubility measurement was that of Sieverts.' The apparatus and procedure were essentially the same as used by Liang, Bever, and Floe."' The equipment consisted of a small vacuum furnace heated by a 6 kw induction unit, gas measuring apparatus, and a gas purification train. The crucibles used were Norton Alundum with alumina sand around them for insulation. The crucibles were charged with 100 to 200 g of material, about 180 g or nearly filling the crucible being found most satisfactory. Hot volumes were determined with argon and ranged from 95 to 130 cu cm (stp). Temperature measurements were made with a Leeds and Northrup optical pyrometer which was calibrated periodically against the melting point of iron in the same apparatus."-'* Good quality nitrogen, hydrogen, and argon gases were further purified and dried in standard purification trains. This study by the Bureau of Mines documents the leadtime required for preliminary and detailed exploration, development of the mine, and construction of beneficiation and support facilities for selected copper deposits in Arizona. The time for major exploration ranged from 1 to 15 years, time for open pit development (or construction) was 1 to 4 years, and time for under- ground development was 4 to 8 years; one underground mine presently being developed may require 12 years to achieve production. Construction of the beneficiation plants required 8 months to just over 2 years. The data are supported by historical facts for each deposit during the leadtime stages from location of claims through exploration, construction, expansion, and leaching. The sequence of development and factors contributing to differences in the time spans are discussed. Histories are detailed for the Miami, Castle Dome, Copper Cities, San Manuel-Kalamazoo, and Twin Buttes properties; briefly summarized are the Pinto Valley, Miami East, Esperanza-Sierrita, Pima, and Mineral Park Properties. Each mining operation had its own pattern of development, and together they present a source of planning information for the development of other properties.

The simultaneous sulfation by sulhr dioxide and oxygen of CaO and MgO in calcined CMA (calcium magnesium acetate) were investigated. he experiments were carried out in the temperature range from 700 to 830 "C and at the SO2 concentrations of 0.3 to 1 mol %. The oxygen concentration was kept at 5 %. Each sample was calcined completely before the temperature was lowered to the sulfation temperature. According to the ranges of partial pressure of sulhr dioxide and temperature, there exist three regions for the sulfation reaction: region I in which neither oxide is sulfated, region I1 in which only CaO is sulfated, and region 111 in which both oxides are sulfated. It was shown that the MgO in calcined CMA is sulfated at a rate comparable to that of CaO by forming a mixed sulfate phase. Thus, unlike MgO contained in other desulhrization materials, the MgO content in calcined CMA can be fully utilized for flue gas desulhrization.

As part of the initial investigation and validation of a new boundary-clement formulation for stress modeling in coal mines. the underground stresses and displacements at two multiple-seam coal mines with unique stress problems are modeled and predicted. The new program, LAMODEL, calculates stresses and displacements at the seam level and at requested locations in the overburden or at the surface. Both linear elastic and non-linear seam materials can he used: and surface effects, multiple seams, and multiple mining steps can be simulated. In order to most efficiently use LAMODEL for accurate stress prediction, the program is first calibrated to the site-specific geo-mechanics based on previously observed stress conditions at the mine. For this calibration process. a previously mined area is "stress mapped" by quantifying the observed pillar and strata behavior using a numerical rating system. Then, the site-specific mechanical properties in the model are adjusted to provide the best correlation between the predicted stresses and the observed underground stress rating. Once calibrated, the model is then used to predict future stress problems abead of mining. At the two case study mines, the calibrated models showed good correlation with the observed stresses, and also accurately predicted upcoming high stress areas for preventive action by the mines.

Electrochemical measurements associated with the electrowinning of lead metal from concentrated brine (NaCI) - lead chloride (PbCI,) electrolytes at temperatures in the range 328 to 353°K (55 - 80°C) were conducted. The electrodeposition of lead metal onto a lead rotating-disk electrode may be described by the electrodic reaction: {PbCl 4 2 + 2e- = Pb° + 4Cl-} The deposition-overpotential requirements are low (approximately 41mV per decade of current density - Am+), with a corresponding high exchange current (approximately 0.018 A.cm2). The diffusion coefficient of the electroactive PbC142- species in a 3.5 NaCl electrolyte at 353°K was insensitive to the total PbCI, concentration (0.01 to 0.1M), and its value was found to be (1.21*0.1)~10-5 cm2Is with a temperature-sensitivity coefficient (E,/R) of approximately 1.98x103K-1 (328OK(T<353OK).

Since mid-July, most domestic producers have been marketing 99.5 percent unalloyed aluminum ingot at 53-57 cents per pound. Dealers in the United States have recently quoted ingot at 52.3-52.8 cents. On October 2, London Metal Exchange will trade aluminum, selling contracts on a cash and a 3-month basis. New York dealers were quoting August ingot at 52.3 52.8 cents. The Bonneville Power Administration announced that, effective December 20. 1978, electric power rates charged primary aluminum producers in the Pacific Northwest would be increased The increase (equivalent to about 4 cents per pound of aluminum produced) will raise the average rate to about 8.7 mills per kw-hr compared to 3.2 mills per kw-hr.

THE year 1935 is noteworthy for the superior legislative measures passed by several states. Sincere efforts have been made to establish equity between the various producing tracts in oil and gas fields. Outstanding legislative measures include the New Mexico law, known as Senate Bill No. 79, approved on Feb. 23; the Oklahoma law on April 22; the Texas law on April 30; and the Kansas law, which became effective July 1. Primarily designed to prevent waste, but more or less the direct out- growth of the current excess of potential oil and gas production, these statutes fall in the class of "Proration Laws."

The ability of various fungal species isolated from gold mines to uptake gold and base metals such as zinc, copper, iron and lead from gold-process cyanide effluents was investigated. Under identical treatment conditions, different strains showed wide variations in their ability to take up gold and other base metals. Aspergillus terreus exhibited as high as a 60% gold uptake. Almost complete removal of zinc was possible with various fungi and with the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Studies at various metal concentrations showed a higher gold uptake from dilute solutions, and studies with Aspergillus niger showed that gold uptake by living cells increased gradually as the contact time increased. Metal uptake capacities between living and nonliving cells were also compared. A waste biomass (ABM- I), obtained from a fermentation industry, wasalso identified as having a high gold uptake capacity. At 5% (W/v) solids, ABM-I could efficiently remove up to 83% of the gold contained in an effluent solution within 24 hrs.
