The partial reduction of zinc ferrite to zinc oxide and iron (II, III) oxide can enhance the leaching rate of zinc. Zinc ferrite has often been found as a major component of zinc residues and electric arc furnace dust. The Waelz process is an existing process for zinc ferrite processing, which requires a temperature of more than about 1200 °C to produce Waelz oxide containing ZnO. Since zinc residues have been deemed as a potential way for the extraction of zinc and other critical metals, it is important to analyze the reaction kinetics in the temperature range of interest. This manuscript discusses the chemical kinetics of zinc ferrite reduction by hydrogen gas. Several researchers studied the reduction of zinc ferrite with CO; however, unlike CO, the use of H2 gas as a reductant allows partial reduction of zinc ferrite even at low-temperature range (400–600 °C). Thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) experiments were performed in the temperature range of 300–700 °C with 10% and 30% H2, and the data obtained was analyzed using the isoconversional method of kinetic analyses. The standard models used for isoconversional kinetic analysis were chosen from literature and experimental data were fitted to determine the controlling mechanism and calculation of kinetic parameters of reduction of zinc ferrite. The rate of reaction was found to be increasing with an increase in temperature and partial pressure of H2 gas. The reaction could be divided into three stages, where reaction interface contraction was found to be the controlling mechanism at the initial stage of reaction. As the reaction proceeds, product layer thickness increases, and thus, diffusion was found to be the controlling mechanism. Roasting products obtained from TGA experiments were also characterized using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to verify critical morphological details.

Chemical and mineralogical characterization of Malaysian monazite, a phosphate mineral, bearing rare earth elements separated from the tin tailings originated from Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia, was performed in this paper. The study aims to collect detailed information on the chemical composition, crystal phases, and microstructure of the mineral monazite concentrate that would aid to optimize the subsequent hydrometallurgical processes for high-efficient separation of thorium and other associated rare earth elements. A systematic characterization study of the concentrate was conducted using techniques such as optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). These techniques analyzed the morphological details on the surface, elemental analysis, and mineral association assessment and identified the surface functionalization groups. The bulk composition and the mineral phases in which the elements are present were studied by wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WD-XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies respectively. The XRF analysis confirmed the presence of Ce, La, Nd, Pr, and Y (rare earth oxides: REO’s ~ 60 wt.%) while thorium dioxide (ThO2) accounted for 7 wt.% of the total composition. Traces of Ca, K, Al, Fe, Ti, and Mn were also confirmed by SEM elemental mapping. The XRD results confirmed that the concentrate was primarily composed of monazite (Ce, La, Nd, Th (PO4)) along with minor impurity phases of quartz. Automated mineralogical analysis was used as a confirmatory tool to corroborate the preliminary evidences. Based on the particle size distribution analysis supported by SEM, the majority of monazite grains were found to be present in the size range of 170–210 μm. Strong bands of PO4 and SiO4 were observed in the IR spectra corresponding to the phospho-silicate matrix of the REE mineral.

Cadmium is toxic to plant, animals and humans. The council directive of the European Communities No 8315 13lEEC has fixed an upper limit of 200 ppb for the release of cadmium in industrial effluents. The conventional method of neutralization/prccipitation ( NIP ) is inefficient to reach this limit. The objective of this study is to test the efficiency of the trees modified bark to remove cadmium cations from industrial effluents after the conventional treatment by NIP. Laboratory scale tests with synthetic solutions show that the cadmium removal depends upon pH and initial concentration. About 99.9 %, 99 % and 96 % of the metal are removed from synthetic solutions containing 10, 100 and 1000 ppm respectively. Pilot plant trials ( 1 m3 ) with an industrial effluent bearing about 500 ppb of cadmium lead to the almost complete elimination of the cadmium ( final concentration is lower than the analytical detection limits < 20 ppb ).

"The start of mining operations often raises serious financial problems. In marginal cases promoters frequently demand financial aid from governments.In the past, the financial assistance has taken the form of gifts, procurement contracts, etc., but aid in such form has been severely criticized. A new formula has been developed to provide a more equitable distribution of the revenues accruing to the government and to private capital.The benefits to these two parties have been evaluated in an hypothetical case and compared in terms of internal rates of return on their investment, their shares of the undiscounted cash flows and their primary profits.The method based on the non-zero sum game theory provides a means for suggesting the lowest feasible annual production and the optimal sum contributed by the government in the form of outright gift, equity capital and convertible bonds. Other financial hypotheses can also be optimized by the computerized analysis."

In 1986 and 1987, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 73,010 acres of the 76,480-acre Lower Owyhee Canyon Wilderness Study Area (OR-003-110) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is in Malheur County, OR, about 8 miles north of Rome. There are approximately 7.7 million tons of subeconomic zeolite (heulandite and/or clinoptilolite) resources with ammonia ion exchange capacities as high as 1.75 milliequivalents per gram in the Chalk Basin-Lambert Rocks area. The bed is 25 ft thick with less than 100 feet of overburden. This resource probably will not be mined in the foreseeable future.

Pillar design is the first line of defense against rock falls—the greatest single safety hazard faced by underground coal miners in the United States and abroad. To help advance the state of the art in this fundamental mining science, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health organized the Second International Workshop on Coal Pillar Mechanics and Design. The workshop was held in Vail, CO, on June 6,1999, in association with the 37th U.S. Rock Mechanics Symposium. The proceedings include 15 papers from leading ground control specialists in the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the Republic of South Africa. The papers address the entire range of issues associated with coal pillars and have a decidedly practical flavor. Topics include numerical modeling, empirical design formulas based on case histories, field measurements, and post failure mechanics.

A 5;6 MVA pyrometallurgical demonstration-scale pilot plant was commissioned at Mintek, South Africa, in 1994, using lead blast-furnace slag and coke as raw materials. The plant included a.d.c. power. supply, two plasma-arc furnaces&apos; and an ISP lead-splash condenser. Slags containing typically 12 per cent zinc oxide and 3 per cent lead oxide are produced as a waste during the smelting of lead in a blast furnace. These slags are a potential: resource for the recovery of lead and zinc. During 1994, about 600 t of lead blast-furnace, slag was proceced through the pilot plant using the Enviroplas process. Zinc and lead oxides were reduced to their respective metals, volatilized, and collected in an. ISP lead splash condenser. Prime Western grade zinc and slags disposable in accordance with current US legislation, were produced. Zinc condensation efficiencies of about 80 per cent were achieved.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines performed batch equilibrium contact experiments to examine the ability of activated coconut-shell carbon to adsorb various metal cyanide complexes. Tests were also conducted to determine the effect these cyanide complex impurities might have on the adsorption of gold by the activated carbon. Metal cyanide species included in the investigation were antimony, arsenic, cadmium, calcium, cobalt, gold, iron, mercury, nickel, silver, thallium, and zinc. Tests were made over a pH range of 6.4 to 12.5. The carbon exhibited a preference for gold adsorption over other metals present in solution. In the absence of gold, the metal cyanide complexes were adsorbed; adsorption generally decreased with increasing pH. However, calcium and thallium adsorptions increased with increasing pH, while arsenic and iron were not adsorbed at any pH.

In recent years rapid advances have been made in the technology used for hydrology and erosion modelling of rural catchments. These advances have been driven by the growing availability of digital terrain maps that can be used to automatically define catchment properties that previously had to be manually extracted from contour maps. In addition, these models have, in principle at least, more powerful predictive capability. The author is involved in a number of projects to migrate and further develop these models for application to mine rehabilitation assessment. Current technologies for hydrology and erosion assessment (eg CREAMS, ANSWERS) are reviewed, underlying principles highlighted and deficiencies in the context of mine rehabilitation design assessment addressed. The advantages and disadvantages of the new digital terrain map tools (eg WEPP, SIBERIA) are discussed. Current work integrating these new models with existing rehabilitation design tools (eg ACIRL&apos;s ARGUS computer package) highlights the advantages of an integrated approach using digital terrain maps; cheaper, faster, lower impact and more flexible rehabilitation design. The use of novel visualisation tools to aid the design process is discussed. The paper is illustrated by applications to mine sites in Queensland and the Northern Territory.

The presence of hard roof poses a significant threat to the safety of underground coal mining. In this study, a mechanical model is established for underground stopes to analyze the overburden structure with the advancing of the mining face. It is indicated that the load-bearing arch structure (LBAS) is formed above the stope for roofs with regular hardness, whereas the reversed-basin bearing structure (RBBS) is formed for hard roofs. Compared with the LBAS, the RBBS can induce an additional pressure at the foot of the bearing structure, and this effect becomes less as the distance between the hard roof and stope increases. The ultra-deep borehole hydro-fracturing technique (UHT) is proposed to weaken the hard roof for pressure release, and the associated equipment and procedures are also presented. The UHT is based on horizontal drilling along the axial direction of the roadway in the roof, and then the receding segmented hydraulic fracturing technique is used to achieve the purpose of fracturing (weakening) of the surrounding rocks. Field tests are carried out in 3022 roadway of Daliangwan coal mine in Yulin to assess the developed technique, equipment, and fracturing procedures. To evaluate the fracturing effect, deep borehole stress-meters are installed at different depths of the fractured and un-fractured zones of the roadway, along with hydraulic support pressure sensors placed at the mining face. The results show that compared with the un-fractured zone, the pressure on the wall and pillar sides is lower than that in the fractured zone, and the associated weighting duration and weighting area ratio of the fractured are reduced by 53.23% and 33.59%, respectively. This indicates that the presented UHT can provide a new solution for the prevention and control of mining disasters induced by hard roof failures in underground coal mining.

In early 1985, Bougainville Copper Limited commissioned an automatic truck despatch system to control its fleet of 44 trucks and 9 shovels. Productivity gains in the past have been the result of increasing equipment size then improving availabilities. The emphasis now is on improving the use of that availability and in particular for trucks, in reducing non-productive truck movement. A batch allocation computer based truck control system had been in operation since 1978, so to achieve the desired improvements it was necessary to move to an automatic dynamic control system. A description of the system installed is given, together with a review of how the project was engineered, the problems encountered and the results achieved to Date.

Fire is always a serious-menace, whether in a residential or in an industrial region; in wartime it is particularly damaging in an industrial plant. The mining industry is especially vulnerable, as its plants are generally more or less isolated front centers of population and do not have access to modern fire-fighting equipment; moreover, owing to the transitory rapture of most mines, their surface structures; are often relatively flimsy and flammable.. Trained firemen seldom are available at or near mining plants to teach the fundamentals of fire-fighting to local fire brigades, with the result that efficiency in combating actual fires is lacking. Often the attitude "it can&apos;t happen here" is held by the management of a mining property, unless the plant has suffered a serious fire; even then lapse of time is very likely to induce forgetfulness as to the possible hazards. The necessity for producing metals for the prosecution of this war has increased management&apos;s responsibility. Whereas heretofore the loss of a plant or mill by fire meant merely monetary less to the stockholder of the company, now the national interest is affected, in that the nation suffers from loss of production of minerals indispensable for war purposes.

Surveying is to tunneling, as a steering wheel is to a car—somewhat essential if you want to end up in the right place. The principles of tunnel surveying have remained unchanged since the first tunnels were constructed: To mathematically connect the selected start and end points of a tunnel and physically translate that alignment onto the ground. The alternative is just dead-reckoning and leaves the probably less than satisfying end results to chance. Today’s laser-guided tunnels often have to thread the needle through a maze of soil types, utilities, structural features and other underground considerations. Surveying makes it possible.

Calculating machines permit the use of the more rapid cotangent and semigraphic solutions of plane triangulation. The results of these methods are as accurate as those of other methods. Simple adjustment of the net, and ease of calculation encourage more complete field work. Errors in field work or in computation are easily localized.

"Exposure to respirable contaminants in mine atmospheres has long posed a serious hazard to miners. The control of these hazards, some of which can have sudden and catastrophic effects and some others, slow and long enduring consequences, has been a major concern for labor, management and government alike. This concern has manifested itself in four primary mechanisms of control -- (1) regulatory control through minimum standard setting by the passage of mine health and safety laws, (2) engineering control through design and operation of 'mines according to the best recommended practices, (3) medical control through periodic physical examinations, wearing personal protection devices, etc., and (4) legal and social control through workmen's compensation laws for occupation related health deterioration:-The respirable contaminants in mine atmo¬spheres are toxic and explosive gases, toxic and explosive dusts, diesel exhaust particu¬lates, radon progeny, etc. Perhaps the most important of all these and the most widely occurring in mine atmospheres is respirable dust, an inevitable product of fragmentation, a unit operation fundamental to all mining operations. In fact; the-most serious health hazard for workers in the mining and minerals processing industries is still the exposure to respirable dust, and solutions to the problem of respirable dust disease remain to be found.The 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act and its provisions for the respirable dust standards in underground coal mines are briefly reviewed. An overview of the research accomplishments in meeting the standards is presented. The current state of knowledge on the effectiveness of the standards and the new and emerging problems are discussed. A brief summary of the research programs of the Generic Technology Center on Respirable Dust is presented.In general, underground mines are becoming increasingly safe. The importance of increasing the world&apos;s mineral production to help solve our food and energy problems has been widely discussed. Improved surface mining methods will be needed to meet these needs. This paper reviews the modern horizontal drilling and blasting methods which can increase the productivity and lower the costs of I surface mining. A substantial decrease in the number of blast holes required, total footage of blast hole required and amount of explosive used has been realized by many mining companies using this method. Applications of this method are presently in large coal surface mines. However, similar gains are possible and probable in open pit mining of copper and iron.

Fiji is a developing nation that relies on economic opportunities and recently experienced increased interest in mining and mineral exploration that could potentially benefit the country. In order to understand the lack of, or failure of, past rehabilitation activity, this study applied risk-based approaches to identify the significance of activities or actions applicable to rehabilitation of post-mined land in Fiji. This involved the use of qualitative, semi-quantitative and quantitative risk methodologies, which allow assessment and evaluation of mechanisms of mining administration and practices, as well as rehabilitation methods and approaches that have been applied successfully to post-mined land in other countries with similar environmental and climatic conditions and social and regulatory environments to Fiji. The semi-quantitative risk-based technique followed an earlier approach applied for mine closure by Laurence (2006) and provided a systematic way to assess and evaluate rehabilitation issues that were identified on-site by assessors, who were able to estimate through expert judgement the likelihood and consequences based on conditions, situations observed and circumstances on-site. It demonstrated that experienced professionals could reproducibly score likelihood and consequence of selected items relevant to mine site rehabilitation, despite the wide-ranging issues identified during post mined land rehabilitation. The quantitative risk-based approach was adopted as a method to determine environmental bonds for mining projects using the assessment of consequences and likelihood results from the semi-quantitative approach, then incorporating unit cost of materials or activities for local conditions required to fully rehabilitate each issue at net present value. Application to both an abandoned mine site and a newly opened mine site in Fiji showed that this approach could provide a risk-based estimate for rehabilitation cost and demonstrated potential applicable in the Fijian context.CITATION:Soro, A T, Mulligan, D R, McIlveen, G, Franks, D M, Robinson, J J and Noller, B N, ?2014. "Noranda&apos;s Heath Steele Mine is located 35 miles north of Newcastle in northern New Brunswick. Blasthole open stoping with partial delayed filling is the major mining method in use. The selection of stope and pillar dimensions to ensure mine stability was originally subjective. This paper describes the progress made in attempting to rationalize design.One major feature is the fracture pattern. The main orebody now being mined, the B zone, has undergone five periods of folding and each period of folding developed a family of fracture planes which are axial planar to that particular fold pattern.The other major features considered are the calculated increase in stress due to mining and depth and its relationship to measured strain. Experience has shown that ground problems affecting production have usually originated in rib pillars. Field observations of ground deterioration and multi-wire extensometer measurements of strain are tabulated together chronologically for each pillar.A factor representing stress and a common plane of weakness are identified. Graphical analysis is used to determine the effect of the plane of weakness on a typical stress/strain curve and provides a base for the design of pillars."

In 1951 the Federal Bureau of Mines became interested in the reports of copper-nickel mineralization in northern Minnesota. Several outcrops on the north side of the Duluth gabbro in the Kawishiwi River area were sampled by the Federal Bureau of Mines and George M. Schwartz of the Minnesota Geological Survey. Because these samples showed appreciable amounts of copper and nickel, a 100-pound sample of an un-altered outcrop was obtained for metallurgical testing. Results from this preliminary work were all favorable; therefore, in the fall of 1953 the Bureau of Mines diamond-drilled three holes near the outcrop of the con-tact between the Duluth gabbro and the Algoma granite. A total of 686 feet of NX size hole was drilled, and 100 percent of the core was recovered. Each hole intersected the contact, and the strike and dip for that locality were established. The core was split, and half was used for analyses and further metallurgical tests; the remainder was retained for permanent record in the Bureau of Mines core-storage warehouse.
