In many practical combustion systems ignition may occur through contact with hot burned gases . Such a process plays a vital role in flame stabilization on bluff bodies . It is also of importance in the ignition of firedamp by the hot spent gases of explosives used in mines . Also , in the communication of flames through narrow channels , a problem of practical importance in flameproofing electrical equipment , the propagation of the flame is essentially a reignition process in which hot burned gases are the agent of ignition . In the actual ignition problem a great variety of conditions may be visualized . Ignition may occur where pockets of hot gases are surrounded by cold explosive mixtures or where pockets of cold mixture may be surrounded by hot gases . Alternately , a flowing stream of combustible mixture may be initially in contact with another stream of hot combustion products , or a jet of hot gases may flow into a cold quiescent mixture ; the jet may be laminar or turbulent , continuous or discontinuous . The hot gas may also consist of the oxidant ( air for instance ) and the cold combustible pure fuel . This study by the Bureau of Mines is concerned only with ignition produced by a continuous jet of gas ( hot ) flowing into a practically quiescent cold mix- The investigation of ignition by bursts of hot gases or by turbulent jets is outside the scope of this report , and work performed on this phase of the problem has been published elsewhere

SIROFRAG is a computer-based imaging system that quantifies the post-blast rock fragment size distribution in a muckpile in a mine environment. Improvements in blast performance and blast modelling are being hampered by a lack of a quick and objective method to evaluate the major result of the blast: the fragment size distribution. This is usually done by hand digitising muckpile photographs: a labour intensive and tedious process. SIROFRAG is being developed to quickly, cheaply and objectively provide this information. SIROFRAG is based on active stereo image analysis. It uses a light stripe to illuminate a muckpile and a pair of video cameras to determine the 3D nature of the scanned objects. The imaging system is based on a novel prototype scanning projector that allows images to he captured in full daylight. The Microsoft Windows based software controls the projector and interprets the captured images to provide a size distribution of exposed rock fragments.

A wide range of drill holes and process streams are sampled for resource estimation, grade control and contractual purposes in the minerals industry. However, despite the availability of training courses, conferences and both national and international standards on correct sampling practices, it is still surprising how often little attention is given to ensuring that representative samples are collected for analysis. The reason for this is that the responsibility for sampling is often entrusted to personnel who do not appreciate the significance and importance of sampling, with cost being the main driving force rather than whether the sample is representative of the material from which it was extracted. This seriously undermines the precision and accuracy of the analyses subsequently generated and can render the analysis process a total waste of time and money and expose mining companies to serious, potential, financial losses. Company management needs to reverse this situation and ensure that sampling is given the attention it deserves to generate representative samples for analysis.

"Zarafshan/Newmont is a 50/25/25 joint venture between Newmont Gold and the State Committee for Geology and Mineral Resources, and Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Combinat, two entities of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The Zarafshan/Newmont joint venture consists of a heap leaching operation which will process 220 million metric tonnes of existing low-grade oxide ore stockpiles (averaging 0.036 oz Au/t) from the Muruntau mine. Net recovery over the 17-year life of the project is expected to be 4.8 million ounces of gold.The plant construction started in October 1993 and operations commenced on May 25, 1995. The crushing plant consists of four stages of crushing and screening to produce a 95% passing 3.35 mm product, followed by heap leaching and gold recovery by the Merrill-Crowe process. The dore metal is refined at the Muruntau refinery. All gold produced by the joint venture is sold on the world market. IntroductionThe Muruntau mine and nearby town of Zarafshan are located in the center of the Kyzylkum desert, 250 miles west of Tashkent, capital of Uzbekistan. Following a mining conference in Moscow in 1990, a Newmont geologist was among the first team of westerners to visit the Muruntau Mine, the second largest gold producer in the former Soviet Union. At Muruntau, they found 220 million tonnes of low grade gold ore that had been stockpiled during the previous 25 years. In February, 1992, six months after Uzbekistan's independence, Newmont signed a 50/50 joint venture agreement with the Uzbek government to use heap leach technology to process the ore. The feasibility study was completed in November of 1992. Plant construction started in October, 1993 and operations commenced on May 25, 1995.Newmont Metallurgical Services performed metallurgical studies to obtain heap leach process design criteria parameters. The initial metallurgical study on 20 grab samples is the subject of this paper."

During colonial times, Brazil was famous for the richness of her alluvial gold deposits. Paul Ferrand has estimated that the gold produced during the period from 1700 to 1820 was the equivalent of some 64 million pounds sterling. Since that time, most of the more prolific alluvial deposits have been exhausted. A few gold mines are still functioning, notably the Morro Velho mine, which is one of the deepest mines in the world. Today, the gold production of Brazil is insignificant when compared with world figures, but there are still many gold-bearing regions and it is probable that in at least some of them profitable returns would result from an exploitation program taking advantage of all the most modern innovations in gold mining and ore treatment on a large scale. In order to demonstrate the value of some of these abandoned prospects and stir up interest in increasing the national gold production, the government has stimulated research. Experimental plants have been and are being established in various places, and tests on large quantities of ores are being carried out on a semicommercial basis. The Geological Survey of the State of Minas Geraes is very active in this line and the Federal Institution is also showing an increased interest in the matter. One of the lesser known gold-bearing regions of Brazil is in the vicinity of Lavras, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. Gold was first reported from this region in the early part of the nineteenth century. In 1811, D. João VI sent an experienced prospector from Minas Geraes to investigate the validity of the reports. According to the reports of Baron Eschwege, he succeeded in extracting some 30,000 Oitavos (about 105 kg.) during the first few years, but the production costs exceeded the value of the gold obtained.

Mathematical modelling was carried out to determine the probable convergence and vertical stress patterns around a retreating longwall panel in an underground coal mine in New South Wales. An 'Electrical Resistance Analogue' and a program called 'THREED' based on the displacement discontinuity method were used for the modelling. Parts of the obtained results are presented here and compared with some measurements of convergence at the site. The modelled and measured data agree better qualitatively, than quantitatively.

An error has been noticed in one of the figures in the 1974 Jackling Lecture "The Henderson Ore Body-Elements of Discovery, Reflections" by Stewart R. The horizontal and vertical scales should be equal, i.e., the horizontal distance shown as 1000 ft should be 2000 ft.

SEVERAL years ago Zener and Hollomon1 suggested that the flow stress of metals might be related to the temperature and strain rate in accord with the functional equation: s=s(eeh/rt) [1] at the same state. The Zener-Hollomon relation also contains the significant tacit implication that the energy for activation, AH, is substantially independent of the state of the material. The utility of this method for correlating creep data with tensile data was illustrated in a preliminary reportL on the effect of alloying additions on the secondary creep rates of binary a solid solutions in aluminum as shown for Al-Mg alloys in Fig. 1. Not only do the secondary creep and ultimate tensile properties for each alloy correlate well on this plot but in addition the activation energy, AH = 17,900 R cal per mol. is identical for the various compositions. Similar types of curves correlating the secondary creep rates at 422°K (300°F) with ultimate tensile data were also obtained for a series of dilute a solid solutions of copper, germanium, zinc, and silver in aluminum. In all cases the activation energy for creep, AH, was found to be equal to about 17,900 R cal per mol independent of the type of alloying element or its concentration. The coincidence of the activation energies for these alloys is probably due to the fact that the activation energies for creep are rather insensitive to small composition changes. Alloying additions, as shown in Fig. 1, however, increased the stress necessary to obtain equivalent values of ee?H/RT. Thus the stress level in curves of the type represented by Fig. 1 gives the relative creep strengths of the various alloys. Inasmuch as these correlations between creep and tensile data were obtained for creep tests at 422°K, it appeared advisable to ascertain the range of secondary creep rates and temperatures over which correlations between creep and tensile data could be made on the basis of the Zener-Hollomon relationship. If, for example, the activation energy changes with different ranges of creep temperatures, the utility of the proposed analysis would be severely weakened. But if AH is constant not only for all dilute alloys, but also over wide ranges of temperature and secondary creep rates, confidence will be developed not only in the broad utility of the Zener- Table I. In order to appropriately reduce the scope of creep tests in this investigation only the typical alloys shown in Table I were investigated. All creep specimens were machined such that their tensile axes were in the rolling direction of the 0.070 in. sheet stock. The gage section was 2 in. long and 0.500 in. wide with a reduced section of 3.50 in. A limitation to present theoretical roof reinforcement design methods is the inability to derive accurate and quantitative information about the roof rock condition and the action of reinforcement at various excavation stages. To obtain the information required to assess roof rock stability, detailed monitoring of the in-situ behaviour of reinforcement and roof strata is required. Reliable instru- mentation and techniques have been developed for use in underground coal mines to identify the geometry and magnitude of displacements occurring in roof rock and the forces generated in reinforcement. The use of such instrumentation allows an accurate assessment of the in-situ capability of reinforcement and the mode of reinforcing action developed. In-situ monitoring can supply data required for the practical design of reinforce- ment and assess the potential stability of current designs. The use of such data together with mine wide appraisal of rock and stressfield considerations, can allow roof reinforcement to be designed on the basis of a predicted roof Response.

During the period January 1, 1977 through July 31, 1977, 5 percent (264,000 tons) of U.S. capacity was closed due to power curtailments in the Pacific Northwest because of the shortage of water. During July, one plant in Tennessee cut production by 50,000 tons annually due to a power reduction by the Tennessee Valley Authority. Full capacity production was resumed at a West Virginia smelter during September. If demand for aluminum is strong it seems likely that aluminum supply during the remainder of 1977 and in 1978 will be tight. The price was increased 3¢ per pound to 51¢ per pound effective March 28, 1977, and by an additional 2¢ per pound to 53¢ per pound, effective July 5, 1977. New projects and expansion of existing facilities are planned by Australian aluminum companies over the next 2 to 3 years. The companies listed have committed themselves to spending approximately A$801 million: Alcoa of Australia Ltd. -New alumina plant at Wagerup, south of Perth. Darling Ranges bauxite is located near the proposed project. A$650 million. Coma 1 co Industries Pty. Ltd. -Increase bauxite mining capacity and upgrade or replace other facilities at its Weipa mines on Cape York Peninsula region of Northern Queensland. A$81 million. Alcan Australia Ltd. -Expansion program that will increase capacity of the Kurri Kurri aluminum smelter north of Sydney about 50 percent, and improvement of other facilities at the plant. A$70 million.

This report presents the results of laboratory mineral evaluations conducted by the federal Bureau of Mines under the joint sponsorship of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) and the Bureau a! Ships, U. S. Department of the Navy. The major purpose of this investigation was to examine and evaluate zirconium minerals representing sizeable deposits in an effort to locate com¬mercial sources of high-hafnium ores. Although determination of the hafnium content was the principal objective, each of the zirconium minerals also was analyzed for combined zirconium-hafnium oxide, silica, uranium, thorium, yttrium, and cerium. The general laboratory procedure involved microscopic examination of the test samples, concentration of the hafnium-bearing zirconium mineral by standard laboratory techniques, and analysis of the derived concentrate by quantitative microscopic, chemical, and X-ray spectrographic methods. Of the several hundred samples tested under this program, 147 are discussed in this report, including 94 from domestic occurrences and 53 from widespread foreign sources.

"The hot deformation behaviour of Nb-Ti microalloyed high-strength steel was investigated. Hot compression tests were conducted in the temperature range 900 to 1100°C under strain rates of 0.1, 1, and 5 s-1. Dynamic recrystallization (DRX) occurs as the main flow softening mechanism at high temperature and low strain rate. The hot deformation activation energy was calculated to be about 404 699 J/mol. The constitutive equation was developed to describe the relationship between peak stress, strain rate, and deformation temperature. The characteristics of DRX at different deformation conditions were extracted from the stressstrain curves using the work hardening parameter. The Cingara-McQueen equation was developed to predict the flow curves up to the peak strain. The processing maps were obtained on the basis of a dynamic materials model. The results predict an instability region in the temperature range 1010 to 1100°C when the strain rate exceeds 0.78 s-1. IntroductionThe 700 MPa grade HSLA steel is widely used in engineering machinery, automotive beams, carriages, and axle tubes, etc. (Pan et al., 2017 ). Generally, such grades contain a moderately high amount of Mn (approx. 1.4% and above), and microalloying elements like Nb, Ti, V, and Mo to impart the desired strength and toughness through solid-solution strengthening, precipitation hardening, and grain refinement dislocation strengthening (Chen and Yu, 2012; Opiela, 2014). However, the production costs can be greatly reduced by replacing part of the Nb, V, or Mo with inexpensive Ti and adopting the compact strip production CSP process (Opiela, 2014; Chen et al., 2015). Furthermore, the microalloying technology coupled with new-generation thermomechanical control processing (NG-TMCP) has proved efficient for achieving the proper balance between strength, toughness, ductility, and formability by means of a suitable combination of chemical composition and thermomechanical treatment parameters (Shukla et al., 2012; Wu, Zhou, and Liu, 2017).In hot forming processes, the complex microstructural evolutions are often induced by multiplicative hot deformation mechanisms, such as work hardening (WH), dynamic recovery (DRV), and dynamic recrystallization (DRX) (Zhang et al., 2014; Liang et al., 2015). Dynamic softening behaviour during hot processing has generated considerable interest because component properties are influenced significantly by its corresponding microstructural evolution (Wu et al., 2010). During deformation in the DRX process, deformed grains are replaced with substructures and newly formed fine and uniformly distributed grains. This occurs only when a critical strain for the onset of DRX is reached, and at the same time, the minimum rate of energy dissipating is reached (Ferdowsi et al., 2014). DRV occurs at a high strain rate and low temperature, reducing the stored energy greatly and making DRX difficult (Liang et al., 2015). The microstructural changes during DRX are sensitive to the processing parameters, such as strain rate, deformation temperature, and strain (Zhang et al., 2014; Ferdowsi et al., 2014). Therefore, in order to optimize the hot processing parameters, it is important to understand the behaviour of hot deformation visà- vis control of microstructural evolution."

The determination of aqueous cyanide is accomplished by either detection in the sample as collected or by removal of the cyanide of the collected sample, followed by detection. The direct determination of the cyanide content of a solution can only be used in the simplest of systems, since many interferences can result in errors. Thus the most widely used method for total cyanide determination involve the reflux distillation of the sample using heat, acid and vacuum or air flow. The basic theory underlying this analytical approach is that by reducing the pH, the quality of molecular hydrogen cyanide will be in- creased and can be removed from the solution by elevating the temperature. The hydrogen cyanide is then collected in a caustic solution and analyzed. The general approach of removing the cyanide from the sample by distillation represented a major advance in this area of analytical chemistry. It enabled the determination of cyanide in many additional types of samples. When it became apparent that the tightly bonded cyanide complexes were not being detected by this approach, many methods fox complex ion destruction were proposed. These methods usually involved low pH adjustment with oxidizing mineral acids, coupled with the catalytic decomposition of the tightly hound complexes. All off the complexes except the strongest could he broken by these methods. The catalytic reflux distillation step has been found to have some negative aspects, since many materials that can be distilled with hydrogen cyanide will interfere with the color development step and result in a false positive reading.

Scarcity of truck tyres, increasing cost and decreasing availability of labour, increases in fuel costs and project budget blowouts have changed the paradigm behind mining equipment selections. The cycle of commodity changes have occurred in parallel with the increasing maturity of continuous mining machinery, mobile in-pit crushing systems and very large scale conveyor belt systems. This paper will consider the merits of operating continuous materials handling systems, mobile in pit crushing systems, relocatable crushing systems, relocatable conveyor systems and automated waste handling systems in place of the more conventional approach of truck haulage.

Bureau of Mines research has shown that very low-sulfur pressure vessel steels with improved mechanical properties can be prepared by two melting processes. Four pressure vessel steels having sulfur contents ranging from 0.0008 to 0.0040 wt-pct, were produced by the electric-arc furnace or by the electroslag processes. Calcium carbide was used as a desulfurizer in the electricarc furnace. Fluxes containing at least 40 wt-pct CaO provided sufficient desulfurization during electroslag remelting. Element recoveries were higher for electroslag remelting than for metal melted in the electric-arc furnace. Bar rolled from electroslag-remelted ingots generally possessed higher tensile strengths and ductility than bar rolled from it t melted in the electric-arc furnace. Charpy V-Notch upper shelf energies were also improved as a result of electroslag remelting. The primary failure mode during impact testing was was microvoid coalescence. Sulfide inclusions were minimal, especially in the electroslag-remelted material.

Experimental modifications have been made by the Bureau of Mines on standard pneumatic rock drills to reduce the noise of the air exhaust, drill steel resonance noise, and noise radiated by the drill body. A close-fitting case and muffler around the drill body, consisting of a metallic honeycomb skeleton filled with viscoelastic absorber on the inside and a durable outer shell, provide both exhaust and drill body noise muffling and absorption. Drill steel resonance noise is reduced by a constrained-layer treatment consisting of a tubular metal cover bonded to the ouside of the rod by a viscoelastic filler. Damping alloy components have been developed to reduce metallic resonance noise. Combined, these modifications have reduced the drilling noise level in granite from 115 dbA to 97 dbA. Data are presented on the individual and combined effects of these modifications on drilling noise and performance.

The major coalfields of Australia are almost unique in the occurrence in some areas of CO partly or almost completely replacing CH4,t1e normal seam gas from metamorphism of coal due to time and depth of burial. This CO2 situation has some benefits but mostly it introduces particular safety problems result- ing from the high density of CO2 relative to air, magnifying problems of gas dilution in ventilation, and the greater affinity which coal has for CO2 than for CH4 increasing proneness to gas-dynamic phenomena. The occurrence of most CO2 seam gas can be directly related to igneous intrusion and to its associated pneumatolytic injections. Whilst intrusions locally increase the rank of coal by their contact metamorphic effect, normal coal metamorphism due to time and depth of burial continues after intrusion and injection together with the ongoing metamorph- ic production of CH . This new CH slowly displaces any CO to leave some present-day intruded coals with seam gas with reduced CO2 or even without any significant CO2 associat- ions. The seam gas maps of the Bowen and Sydney Basins and more detailed maps of specific areas exemplify these situations. Mining progress, plus more searching studies of igneous-coal relationships provide improved understanding of the factors involved.

For years past I have traveled in quest of promising mining-properties, over almost impassable mountain-trails to remote places in the mining-regions, usually many miles from an assay-o5ce. If, upon examination, the fornlation and the ore-deposit appeared favorable, a quick determination of the value of my samples was necessary, in order that I might take intelligent action with reference to the acquisition of the property. A journey with my samples to civilized regions often meant weeks of delay, and perhaps loss of opportunity. How many, under similar circumstances, have returned with their assay-results from such a journey, only to find that some audacious speculator had optioned" the property! True, a first payment could have been made and the chances taken on the results; but experience has taught that rich-looking ore is not of necessity valuable. Personally, I would not hazard a ten-dollar bill on any property without first determining by assay the value of the ore. The occurrence of metallic minerals in Australia to the time of the proclamation of South Australia as a Colony in 1836 was unknown. It is, therefore, perhaps, surprising that British settlers arriving in the Coromandel included among their number a German scientist Johannes Menge who had been appointed by the South Australian Company to the post of Mine and Quarry Agent and Geologist on 1 July 1836. His instructions were to `explore the natural productions of the Colony above and below ground and to superintend the working of quarries of stone and slate, the boring for water, metal, lead, coal and other mines at a salary of ú150 per annum for one year and for as much longer as the Company require your services not however exceeding five years'. In the event, he was to have little influence on those matter.

La presente investigación señala la etapa de creación de las organizaciones de seguridad y de SOGESA, funcionamiento, orientación inicial y el programa mínimo de ejecución inmediata y progresiva. El programa de seguridad se inició en 1980. La técnica impuesta para este programa surge de un compendio de la experiencia desarrollado en programas anteriores. La aplicación se dio en la industria metalúrgica de Cerro de Pasco, y luego en la industria azucarera con la Grace Co. de la hacienda Cartavio, no lográndose definir el programa por completo. En este sentido, se perfila el planeamiento de un programa mínimo a través de un estudio a corto plazo de la situación real en SOGESA y se precisa el lugar que ocupa la seguridad e higiene industrial dentro de una organización. Asimismo se describe las necesidades mínimas del equipo de seguridad y protección, como la difusión de la creación de un conciencia de seguridad en cada trabajador a través de charlas, exhibiciones y reuniones con jefes de servicio y supervisores. También se desarrollan otros elementos estructurales de seguridad como las inspecciones, brigadas de voluntarios de seguridad, estadísticas, campaña contra incendios e higiene industrial para la comunidad, respectivamente.
